EDITOR’S NOTES Dear Readers: With the holidays over and the new year beginning it’s always a time for reflection and growth. Change that normally frightens many of us much of the time seems appealing when it’s repackaged with a bow as a New Year’s resolution. I’m looking forward to the new year armed with a few nuggets of wisdom I’ve finally picked up. For one thing I’m going to stop judging how I am doing against other’s successes. The only person I have to worry about is me. I don’t have to care what others are doing or hold myself up against their achievements. All I need to do is concern myself with my own achievements, my own goals and my own behavior. Once I realized this it was as though a giant load of bricks fell off of my back. I feel lighter and much better for it. The other thing I’ve finally realized is that its ok to stop pushing myself all the time. It’s ok to take time out to enjoy doing something fun instead of sweeping my porch or re-calking the bathroom. Those things won’t matter in the years to come but the fun, the memories I make with those I love will. We talk about balance a lot as a society and I feel I’m finally realizing just what that means for me. Isn’t it time you did the same? With that in mind this issue of E N V Y has some great articles about getting away and wonderful resort Sims. Allow yourself time to explore them and enjoy! Be good to yourself and make 2017 the year you discover just how wonderful you are!

REASONS TO PLAN

A GETAWAY IN SECOND LIFE By Arianna Jasmine 10 - E N V Y MAGAZINE

VOL. 3.9

If you are unable to get away in your real life due to time or budget constraints think about planning a getaway in Second Life. It’s the new year and the perfect time to do it. How does one get the advantages of a real life getaway from a Second Life getaway? First plan where you would like to go. Second life has an abundance of places to choose from including mountain cabins, snowy ski villas, private yachts, campgrounds, beach resorts and so much more. Next decide when you wish to take your getaway and how long will stay. We all know in Second Life you can hop from place to place across the grid and spend time at all of the above within an hour but if you wish to reap some of the benefits of this faux getaway choose a time span and one place. For example if you work during the week and spend a chunk of time online only on the weekends then plan for a weekend or if you spend weeknights for an hour online each night plan for a few week nights Whatever works for your schedule is what is best. Whatever you do though once your vacation schedule is set don’t deviate, don’t skip the time at your destination and don’t hop around the grid. Hit the no disturb on your preferences. For example for the next three instances that you sign onto SL if you have decided those hours will be spent at your vacation destination, spend them there. Now here’s the best part of your SL vacation, you can actually feel refreshed and renewed if you do it right! Follow the steps below to ensure you get every advantage of your planned SL getaway: 1. Disconnect from everything but your computer. That means allow yourself permission from the time you arrive at your destination to unplug phones, shut and lock doors, dim lighting and push thoughts of work, kids, family etc out of your mind. Absolutely no checking FaceBook, Email or any other social media during your scheduled vacation time. 2. Set the scene in real life. That means making sure you are comfortably dressed and in a relaxing position. Light candles if it soothes you or use aromatherapy. If you wish play your favorite music, something that suits the mood whether your at the beach, roller skating or enjoying floating in that magnificent pool at the spa resort you’ve chosen. 3. Use what you have and where you are. For example if you are having a ski weekend, hit the slopes dressed and ready, try all the trails, use the snowmobile, take photos of your fun, invite friends to come along if you like, then after plant your avi by the fire to enjoy a good book while you do the same in real life. Looking up from time to time to take in the scene of a flickering fire and snowy window. If it’s the beach you crave relax with your book on the sand while listening to the sounds of the waves which SL so considerably supplies us with. 4. Plan on taking in an SL gallery or museum that you haven’t been to as of yet. Make reservations and treat yourself to that nifty restaurant you’ve wanted to try. There are eateries to fit every budget on SL. Discovering new things and making memories are what vacations are all about. Take plenty of photos and start an album especially for that trip on Flickr. When your getaway time is over if you’ve done it right you should feel relaxed, surprisingly light and as though you’ve had some time “away”. SL basically helps us with visualizing ourselves in happy, fun and relaxing situations. Visualizing has been used for years to help people with anxiety and stress so why not take advantage of it? It does beat airport security, dealing with gas prices and hearing….”Are we there yet?” VOL 3.9

MERAKI A LABOR OF LOVE 12 - E N V Y MAGAZINE

VOL. 3.9

Once you land at the isles of Meraki Golf Resort & Spa, you are immediately enveloped by its spirit. The lush greenery, crystal blue waters and wildlife sing their welcome. Walking along cobblestone paths, you are transported back to a simple time, a slower pace, that persuades you to relax.

Gazing out across the hillside I say, “ I love your Sim, it’s such a lovely, peaceful space you have created. What exactly inspired you to build a Golf Resort & Spa?” With another angelic laugh, I met with Anna Stone of Meraki Designs, and Ana responds, “ When we met and started daJose Squeegee, of Avatair Airlines, among the ting we realized that we can't just sit around dobeauty of all their combined efforts. “This was such a large undertaking, merging so many ideas as you both have successfully done,” I state with seriousness. “ What were some of the unexpected hurdles you faced with bringing all your ventures, Avatair, Merak, together with Meraki Golf & Resort?” Jose answers as he looks out over the hillside, “There were a lot of hurdles but each one of them helped us become stronger and closer. Shortly after Ana and I met, Lago de Prata regions shut down. All of a sudden most family members found themselves homeless living in a diaspora around Second Life. Ana was rarely online since she was dedicated to design school and work in real life. Kristina Taov, Avatair co-founder and I decided to keep Avatair running and we opened a small seafood restaurant and hostel at Grand Manan Island in Sailors Cove Estate. We called it “Motel” (now La Gamba Negra) because it is located by the docks so people can sail in their boats or fly in one of our seaplanes for dinner and stay a night in the lounge. It was small but it worked great and people loved the rustic cozy atmosphere. We were flying Avatair guests like this for a couple of months. Then Luciano Lionheart, a friend and talented singer, moved his venue to Second Norway. He and the awesome Mialinn Telling invited us to work in a new airline and travel agency called Visit Second Norway (VSN). Ana came back to Second Life shortly after finishing her studies and wanted to create mesh. She joined VSN and re-decorated Bella Bistro Restaurant and Hotel Bryggen along with Mialinn Telling and Kera Gelbert. That’s when we really started to spend more time together until we just wanted to do everything together. Ana started creating mesh for her brand Merak and we needed to find a place big enough to fit Merak Main Store and a resort. We found two nice regions at Tuarua Fiji, a beautiful Estate connected to the Mainland and Blake Sea. We called it Meraki, because it reflected exactly what you described at the beginning of this conversation: “Putting your heart and soul into something.” “What do you hope people take away from their experience at Meraki?” I ask. Jose, draping an arm over Ana’s shoulder responds, “A whole travel experience worthy to remember. We want people to feel inspired, with love and positive 14 - E N V Y MAGAZINE

emotions.” A smile slowly spreads across my face as I catch a glimpse of Jose poking his tongue out at Ana, “ With today being the start of a brand new year, of course I must ask...What do you feel was your greatest accomplishment of 2016?” Ana states, “I feel that developing my brand and starting the resort are my greatest accomplishments, which inspired me to also finish my postgraduate studies in RL as well!” She turns to face Jose and adds with a giggle, "For Jose, I think his greatest accomplishment is being with me.” With a broad smile as he pulls her close, Jose nods in agreement, “She is right.”

I laugh with both of them and add, “What is it that you hope to accomplish in 2017?” With a serious tone, Jose quickly replies, “We want to become better human beings. The world and our galaxy are undergoing a major historic transition in order to avoid extinction. That involves becoming human beings again and stop evolving into mere egoist machines. We will do anything to support the human species and every other species that inhabit this wonderful planet.” In closing I ask, “Is there anything else you would like to add?” Warmly Ana concludes, “I would just like to thank you for the opportunity to share our work with everyone and hope to inspire the rest of the residents to keep exploring, because SL has a lot to offer!” Jose adds, “ Thanks so much for inviting us to hang out with you today. I wish you and all ENVY Magazine readers a wonderful New Year!” Meraki Isle is a beautiful, serene, special place, definitely worth taking the time to visit. One could explore it for days and still not discover all its little treasures. I encourage everyone to drop by for a visit, speak to Jose and Ana to book a stay! By Sin Revenge

MODEL’S WORKSHOP CHALLENGE WINNER

VENUM AMES 54 - E N V Y MAGAZINE

VOL. 3.9

For this issue E N V Y had an opportunity to interview Venum Ames, winner of the Model’s Workshop November 2016 Styling Challenge . The challenge was to choose your favorite literary character and bring them to life. Venum faced a great deal of competition but took the win with her recreation of “Belle” from Beauty and the Beast.

AJ: What’s been your favorite moment in SL so far and what are some of your goals for the future? Venum: Meeting two wonderful friends that I have was the best that has happened so far. Goals? Hmm...I just want to continue styling for any occasion, it is as simple as that. No big dreams about MVW and such, for now that is.

AJ: How did you get your start Venum, which modeling school did you attend? AJ: What is your favorite type of styling to do and why? Venum: SCALA Modeling Academy, I won various challenges during school. I’ve been in Venum: I don’t have any favorite styles. SL for 10 years but I didn’t contemplate being a Anything goes. model until 2011 when I styled a store’s gift and I had parked my avi there. The Vogue Fashion AJ: I can certainly understand that, it’s diffistore manager “discovered” me and asked me cult to limit yourself to one favorite. What else do to model for the store. I’ve not won any big you enjoy doing in SL besides modeling awards yet but I did win the MW Mod Styling Venum? Challenge and now the Literary Character Styling Challenge, that’s two out of two. Venum: Shopping for stylings and runway shows. (laughing). AJ: What made you decide to get involved in styling and modeling in the first place? AJ: What do you find the modeling community in SL to be like? Venum: I liked the challenges. I find it a creative outlet to search and try to find what’s best Venum: A little distant so to speak…..um I for my avatar for that style plus the pleasure is think it’s hard to communicate sincerely, beamazing and my endorphins get sky high by do- cause of the competitive spirit being so high ing it! I guess that’s what I was doing as a little maybe? Plus sometimes it can be unfair begirl, dressing my dolls up and down. cause people’s egos can be hurt easily and a second chance is out of the question! AJ: I used to love dressing my dolls up all the time too. What was the inspiration for the AJ: What’s in store for the future of Venum “Favorite Literary Character” outfit? Ames? Venum: I was inspired to style and bring to SL, Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I had watched the show on TV for the first time just a short time ago. I watched the French version( La Belle et la Bete) by Christophe Gans, with Vincent Cassel and Lea Seydoux. I was deeply touched by the beauty of the scenes and the romance in the air, it was a fairy tale. I chose to style Belle simply and romantically. I chose vibrant colors for the gown to contrast her skin and added some details like the vial necklace, the roses and a lion head ring to emphasize the fairy tale’s symbols. It was rather easy and fun to put together. VOL 3.9

Venum: SL God knows…… AJ: Venum thank you so much for taking the time to speak with E N V Y today. It’s been a pleasure getting to know you. Venum: Thanks so much!
