y seven-year-old nephew, (about to be eight), is in the second grade. As often as I can I ask him, "What was the favorite part of your day at school today?" Sometimes he tells me it was playing with his friends at recess. Sometimes it's painting in art class. This past week, however, when I asked him what his favorite part of the day was, he said, "Meeting Joseph and Amber." "Why did you get to meet them?" I asked. "They came to my class to talk to us about why they were in wheelchairs," he said, matter-of-factly. I asked him what he learned. He told me Joseph had been in an accident when he was a teenager, and Amber was born with a muscle disease. "So you got to ask them questions?" I asked. "Yeah, they were really nice and they are just like everybody else, except they are in a wheelchair," he said. My nephew is an open-minded kid, and it warms my heart that his school continues to support his curiosity and knowledge with diversity and inclusion. My follow-up question for him is always, "And what was your least favorite thing at school today?" His answer is almost always, "Nothing! It was a great day!" I aspire to be more like him. Interested in a Government Career? Here’s Advice from Federal Employees
A
By Kiki Marlam
lthough the federal government has more than two million employees, more people are needed to address our most pressing challenges. National crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and talent gaps in emerging fields have led agencies to consider initiating rapid hiring surges.
Why should someone work in government? For many reasons. Earlier this year, we surveyed federal employees about their work experiences to honor Public Service Recognition Week . Some 130 public servants at 45 federal agencies responded, offering insights into the benefits of working in public service and advice for a government career.
Many employees described the satisfaction that comes with making a difference.
Some respondents offered advice on landing a federal job.
Brandon S., an intelligence specialist at the Defense Department, advised prospective candidates to use internships and volunteer opportunities to gain experience. He recommended networking at hiring events, researching the agency’s mission and history, and customizing resumes to match the exact skills outlined in a job description. Tammy L. V. K., executive director at the Federal Aviation Administration, encouraged applicants to contact current federal employees. “There are a number of paths that someone can take to obtain a position and advance their careers in the federal government; you just need to ask.”
Some respondents shared advice on how to succeed in a government career.
Steve C., with 26 years of service across four agencies, said employees aren’t always recognized for “If you have professional pride, and their work by the public or within the a true desire to help others and conworkforce, but should “take a great tribute in a meaningful and selfless deal of satisfaction from knowing that way, public service is where you you have done the right thing, and belong,” said Robin W., a federal Some employees described pluses that what you do truly matters in the employee of 31 years working at the long run.” Department of Commerce. such as good work-life balance, Professionalism is important, acFor Linda S., a senior analyst ample opportunities for cording to several respondents. Why do federal employees join public service? Federal employees cite many reasons for joining public service, including economic opportunity, the chance to do work they’re passionate about and job security. For many federal employees, however, one motivation stands above the rest: the desire to give back. That was the theme that arose from a survey we sent in May, which received responses from 130 public servants at 45 federal agencies serving at all levels of government. For Gary R., his upbringing inspired him to serve. His parents fled Germany after World War II to find new opportunities, and he wanted to give back to the country that gave them a fresh start. He served in the military but then headed to the private sector. However, federal service called to him once again, and he is now a curriculum manager at the Department of Homeland Security. Elizabeth J. grew up with English as her second language but because she didn’t have access to ESL classes, she spent much of her time sitting silently at her classroom desk. “I said if I ever got the chance to change this that I would,” Elizabeth wrote. She’s now in a position to do so. As an employee of the Department of Education, in the Office of English Language Acquisition, Elizabeth works to make learning easier for ESL students across the country. The military is often a pathway to a lifetime of public service, which was the case for Sharon M. at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. She served in the military for six years and then in the Naval Reserves, while also running her own business.
November 2021
After 9/11, her sense of patriotism and desire to help soldiers in harm’s way led her to return to full-time public service. “I serve because I want to make a difference, and I want to help the soldiers and sailors in harm’s way,” Sharon wrote. “I understand their situation; I was there.” Other federal employees joined public service after working in the private sector because of the federal government’s mission. Kirtida P. from the Food and Drug Administration had a high-paying corporate job where she saw unsafe products being sold to hospitals and used by staff. She left to work for the federal government, making it her mission to protect the public from dangerous health products. Kyle B. began work at the General Services Administration to support America’s 244-year-old legacy, which has made him feel like he is part of something greater than himself. “A private company is only accountable to its shareholders and gets to pick its customers via what type of product or service it sells,” he wrote. “Public service does not get that luxury. Everyone is its customer. But this is why public service is so important to me; it matters.” To share your own experience of working in federal government, including why you decided to join public service, take the survey. You can also read more about stories from federal employees in a blog post highlighting responses from the 2021 #IServeBecause survey. The Four Fastest-Growing Jobs for Women in 2021 by Allwomenstalk.com
he imminence of automation leads to growing fears in many industries. Even though it is estimated that currently there are around 3.5 million truckers in the United States, self-driving cars are not a thing of the future but of the present. The change won’t happen overnight, but the trucking industry is only one of many job sectors that could dramatically shrink in the next couple of years. People are increasingly more careful when it comes to choosing their career paths. It might turn out that the years of studying are for nothing, as the job won’t exist in a decade or two. That’s why we have prepared a list of the four fastestgrowing jobs for women in 2020, which we think you’ll find
interesting, especially if you aren’t sure what path you should choose.
DRIVER The companies offering food delivery services have been experiencing a period of steady growth even before the COVID-19 pandemic, though this unexpected crisis only helped them attain even bigger prominence. People are afraid to visit brick-and-mortar stores or go to the restaurants, so as not to get infected with the coronavirus. On top of that, as a consequence of the lockdown, millions of Americans have lost jobs, making the work in one of the biggest food delivery companies, such as DoorDash, GrubHub, or Uber Eats a popular choice among those seeking employment. Alternatively, if

you consider yourself a people’s person, you could also take ridesharing companies into consideration. In such a case, we recommend checking what the Uber Black requirements are.
COURIERS To a large degree, the job of a courier is similar to our previous pick. You have to have excellent driving skills, and ideally, a great sense of direction as well, though let’s not forget that everyone uses GPS these days. What is the reason behind the growing popularity of the job of a courier? Sure, we could say that due to the COVID-19 pandemic the percentage of customers who do shopping online increased, and we wouldn’t be mistaken. However, even without the current crisis at hand, the number of male and female couriers would increase, as our society assigns great value to the convenience. It doesn’t matter if you need to buy a hammer, a pair of jeans, or perhaps a cute picture of zombie Napoleon. You can find all of those items online, meaning that you won’t have to leave your home to get them. If you love driving, we are sure that you’ll enjoy delivering the packages to people!

CONSTRUCTION-RELATED JOBS You might be surprised that positions related to construction are among the fastest-growing jobs in 2021, but mind you: it doesn’t mean that a significant number of women work at construction sites; it’s just that their percentage is rapidly increasing. The fastest growth can be observed in managerial positions - in 2015, there were 49,400 women working as construction managers, whereas in 2019, this number rose to 99,400. When it comes to construction laborers, the increase wasn’t as dramatic, but nonetheless, from 2015 to 2019, the number of women working in this position increased by 50%. If we take into account the changing perception of what women’s and men’s jobs are, we shouldn’t expect this trend to stop anytime soon. Sure, you might get a little dirty, but at least you won’t be sitting in front of the computer screen for 8 hours each day!
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTISTS
We’ve been hearing a lot about reducing waste, as our current way of living is simply unsustainable. We have reached a point where garbage is sent from one country to another. Before the ban that came into effect in 2018, China was receiving 4,000 shipping containers full of garbage daily. Now that it is no longer a possibility, the countries that have previously taken an easy route out have to find a different way to deal with the millions of tons of garbage being produced each year. Our Earth is big, but we can’t continue producing so much garbage. Thankfully, more and more people study environmental sciences, hoping to reduce the harmful impact that we have on our planet. From 2015 to 2019, the number of women working as environmental scientists has increased by 55%. We wholeheartedly hope that the interest in this field of study will help us deal with at least some of the problems plaguing our Mother Earth. The job market is currently undergoing colossal changes, with some of the previously popular work positions disappearing due to the developments in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. It is no wonder then that people who are seeking employment, especially those without much job experience, are full of doubts. That’s why we have compiled a list of the four fastestgrowing jobs. However, we recommend taking into consideration the potential consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, which are difficult to grasp yet fully. Article provided by AllWomensTalk.com

It’s Cool To Be A Manufacturing Engineering Major Again
T
he number of individuals earning degrees in engineering has increased steadily over the past decade, and those numbers will only continue to grow. In particular, one subdiscipline of engineering is looking ever more appealing to students: manufacturing engineering.
What Is Manufacturing Engineering?
in the U.S. (possibly due to the sheer number of schools that offer this degree), bachelor’s degrees awarded in manufacturing engineering and related fields have been steadily growing in the recent past, increasing from 3,503 diplomas in 2007 to 5,649 diplomas in 2016. For those who have already graduated from college, earning a master’s degree at a program such as North Carolina State’s Integrated Manufacturing Systems Engineering Institute (IMSEI) is also an increasingly popular option. In fact, master’s degrees in manufacturing engineering and related fields are not that far behind bachelor’s degrees, increasing from 2,565 diplomas in 2007 to 4,102 diplomas in 2016.
Manufacturing engineering is a branch of engineering that focuses on improving the production of an item, whether that’s through making product design changes or creating more effective manufacturing processes. Job duties of manufacturing engineers can include developing solutions to production issues, performing cost-benefit analyses, or operating computWhy Students Want to Become er-aided design software to design and produce products and systems. clearly have a strong interest in a manufacturing engineering career. Here are some reasons why students think it’s a good idea to be a manufacturing engineering major again: Getting a manufacturing engineering degree offers many opportunities to conduct lab research and academic projects while at school. For example, at The Ohio State University, the Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME), part of the Ohio Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) and the MEP National NetworkTM, provides oppor-

Many students are drawn to engineering in the first place because of their love of making products and machines, and they hope to continue doing this in a professional capacity after graduating. Manufacturing engineers stay laser-focused on creating the best, most efficient product possible, which a lot of students find very appealing. At the end of the day, they’ll be able to point to a tangible, concrete item they helped to improve. Besides raising the worldwide standard of living, a career in manufacturing engineering can also raise students’ personal standard of living by setting them up for a solid career. While the Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn’t break out manufacturing engineers separately, employment of engineers overall is expected to increase by 8% by 2026, one percent higher than the average. Not only that, the median annual pay for all engineers is $92,220 (more than twice the average median pay across all occupations), and employees in certain sectors — such as computer and electronic product manufacturing — can make even more.
The career outlook is bright for engineers overall, and manufacturing engineers often get to work on products that touch and improve the lives of people all over the world. Whether it’s a bachelor’s or a master’s, getting a degree in manufacturing engineering will set students on the path for a successful career in one of the economy’s most important industries. Valuing Diversity and Building Trust
Building Cross-Cultural Trust with Subordinates, Peers and Customers
Do
by Tracy Brown
people trust you? As a leader are you trusted by your peers, subordinates, customers, suppliers and superiors? Most of us find it easy to build trust-filled relationships with people who are similar to us or with people we feel comfortable with. Of course it’s easier to build rapport if we share the same values, cultural norms or language. If we understand the same jokes, went to the same school or watch the same TV shows we have something in common. However, in the multicultural workforce that exists today we work with (or provide services to) people with whom we have very little in common. We tend to avoid people we don’t know. We tend to ignore people whose ideas and communication styles are different from our own. We tend to get defensive if someone expresses a different view or presents a different approach to solving a problem. We generally limit our time with these different people so we can seek out relationships with others we feel more comfortable with.

This can be dangerous for leaders. If you are not comfortable with a subordinate it will affect the way you coach, mentor or guide that person. If you are unaware of the cultural norms of a customer you may offend or misunderstand him. Valuing diversity -- and finding ways to utilize diversity as a strategic advantage -- are both critical competencies for leaders in the U.S.A. in the 21st century.
Diversity and Trust
The challenge of building cross-cultural trust requires much more than understanding personality types or dominant communication style. In order to build trust there are specific behaviors that must be demonstrated. In order to build trust there are certain agreements that must be negotiated. In order to build trust there are unavoidable conversations that must be shared. Building trust is not an intellectual exercise. It is an interactive dance. The Reina Trust and Betrayal Model™ is a helpful tool for understanding the complex elements which add up to trust.
Capacity for Trust
Our capacity for trust is affected by everything we have been exposed to in our lives. Capacity for trust refers to each person’s natural tendencies (and their readiness) to trust self and to trust others. Capacity for trust can be measured on four scales that help us look at our behavioral and thought patterns relative to trusting self and trusting others. For example, some people need lots of detailed information and prefer sequential problem-solving steps. Others may prefer few details and love group brainstorming as a problemsolving approach. And in addition to individual style, different

cultures demonstrate trust in different ways. In the U.S. business environment we generally expect people to maintain direct eye contact when we are talking with them. But in many African American and Hispanic/Latino families, children are taught to look down in deference to parents and other authority figures. Direct eye contact is viewed as disrespectful. When we value diversity we begin to see there is more than one set of behaviors and decisions that can lead to trust-filled relationships. Effective leaders are able to identify individual employee or customer styles and create a work environment that supports high levels of productivity and trust. Transactional Trust. Another part of the Reina Trust & Betrayal Model™ focuses on the three types of trust that are evident in human interaction. When you trust someone (or when you don’t trust someone) you can usually point to one or more specific interactions you’ve had related to their competence, their communication or their character. Competence Trust. Trusting a coworker’s competence is critical. We need to believe the coworker has the skills needed to complete the job. Unfortunately, many leaders confuse competence with comfort. Sometimes employees are judged more harshly simply because their boss or coworkers are uncomfortable about one or more characteristics the employee represents. For example, if an employee speaks with an accent, sometimes he might be perceived as not having the skills or education required, even though he is performing the job daily. Your subordinates depend on your ability and willingness to recognize their skills and talents, or to help them develop the skills needed to be viewed as competent.

Character Trust. Trust in a co-worker’s character is also important. Have you ever worked with someone who made promises they didn’t keep? After that employee missed several deadlines or failed to come through with a key contact you stopped depending on them. Trust was broken and perhaps you felt betrayed. But sometimes there are cultural factors influencing the relationship. This is where understanding and valuing diversity becomes really important for leaders in the workplace. When you find yourself judging someone you don’t know very well based on what you consider to be group characteristics, you are part of the problem. A common example is the supervisor who is interviewing applicants to fill a position but finds herself avoiding young female candidates because of a belief that they are likely to leave in a few months or a few years to start a family. Challenge yourself to recognize when you are allowing your stereotypes about people who represent a certain group affect your judgment. Communication Trust. Communication trust is so much a part of our daily interaction with others we often don’t think about it! Just about everyone we talk to, listen to, or read email from is evaluated on whether we believe them, like them or trust them. Much work has been done in the workplace around communication styles; still most of us tend to gravitate toward those who have a communication style complementary to our own. We avoid those whose communication style is less comfortable for us. If you are going to be an exemplary leader you must develop Continued on page 24

the ability to generate trust on many levels. You must not only model character, communication and contractual trust, but you must also develop the ability within your subordinate staff for them to be able work effectively with a broad range of coworkers and customers.
Betrayal
A third part of the Reina model delves into the feeling of betrayal that occurs when trust has been broken and provides seven steps for healing from betrayal. Now, every one of us has experienced betrayal of some kind. Most often when I say “betrayal of trust” people quickly recall a sad or painful experience they had in a relationship with a lover or family member. But if you think about it, there are many betrayals of trust in the workplace. Many times these betrayals are unintentional! An employee thinks she is doing the right thing but it doesn’t meet your expectations or needs. You feel betrayed that the employee didn’t accomplish the goal. The employee might feel betrayed and thinking you were not clear in expressing the desired outcome or that you provided insufficient direction. Another example of unintentional betrayal might occur in a company that must cut costs and announces a plan to reduce staff by 5 percent. That feels like a betrayal to the workforce, even though it can’t be avoided.
Cross Cultural Breakdown in Trust
When there is a breakdown in trust we feel uncomfortable, angry or confused. When that breakdown occurs between people from different cultural groups it is even harder to heal. Adding to the challenge, people bring their experiences away from work with them when they report for duty each day. This is unavoidable. Imagine if you were an employee who uses a wheelchair. Your morning routine is quite different than most other employees. Your travel between home and work requires different adjustments. When you go shopping people make assumptions about your intelligence, your abilities and your needs which are often incorrect. You arrive at work expecting to be valued for your education, your skills, your ideas and the contribution you make to the department’s success. And if you are lucky, you get that. But you also get people who think they are being friendly or funny as they joke about the great, close-up parking space reserved just for you. And you also get passed over for promotion because people simply don’t “see” you (or anyone who needs a wheelchair to get around) as a high-potential, fasttrack employee in line for the next promotion. Leaders who understand that diversity can be a strategic advantage are careful to evaluate their assumptions and perceptions about each employee. They work hard to separate their stereotypes about groups from their understanding of each individual.
Leadership Skills for the 21st Century
If you want to be a great leader in the 21st century you need more than technical skills and intellectual knowledge. You must also have the relationship skills that will help you to be effective in a multicultural environment. Are you comfortable leading a team full of people who represent more cultural elements than you can name or count? Are you able to communicate effectively with people who have different patterns for dealing with conflict, generating

ideas, showing respect or expressing humor? Have you exposed yourself to heroes and achievers from cultures other than your own? There are men and women in every ethnic group, every age group, every religious group and every educational level who have accomplished great things. Your skill in building trust might not be measured by a written test. Instead it will be measured daily by your behavior and annually by the productivity of your team or department.
Tips for Building Trust
First, look at yourself. There’s no escape from your own behavior. Trust is a two-way street. So, do you establish clear boundaries and keep your agreements? Are you consistent in the way you interact with others? Do you focus on mutual success? You can create a trusting environment within your department or organization by proactively managing expectations. This requires you and others involved being explicit about what the desired outcomes are and the behavior expected while working toward those goals. In a multicultural environment this can sometimes be a challenge. So it is very important that you demonstrate interest and respect for different approaches and styles. If you as the leader are comfortable interacting with people from different cultural groups, the people working with you will develop that same comfort. And remember: when we talk about different cultural groups we are not limited to race and ethnicity! One of the biggest challenges for leaders in the 21st century is working effectively with people from different age groups. Religion has also |become a more prominent challenge as scheduling, dress codes and food service are affected by the need to respond to religious norms of our workers and customers. And people with disabilities have become more visible and more active. These factors, and other dimensions of diversity, require us to be willing to make cultural adjustments. Building trust with a multicultural customer base requires you to begin with an honest desire to understand the needs and expectations of your customers. Whether you are providing a service or manufacturing a product you must find ways to learn the customer’s point of view. This may include focus groups, periodic surveys, or something as simple as asking each customer for feedback at each encounter. As a leader your success is often judged by the competence of the people you are working with. So encouraging subordinate staff and peers to be at their best is important. You can jumpstart excellent performance by letting people know you recognize their talents on a regular basis. Don’t take anyone’s skills or talents for granted! Let other people make as many decisions as possible -- especially those decisions that affect their daily productivity. This sends a message that you trust them and they will in turn show more respect and trust in you.
You Must Be the Example
Whether you are working with one other person to accomplish a specific project, or with dozens of people as part of an organization, your responsibility as a leader is to be a guide on the path to success. You can achieve certain goals without developing trust; but why would you want to? As a leader you are a major influence on whether or not your multicultural team works together in trust-filled ways. And you are a critical link in insuring your team can provide excellent service to your multicultural customers. Article provided by www.DiversityTrends.com

If you have been paying attention to the news recently, you already know that there are a lot of changes occurring in the healthcare industry. If you’re looking for a job that offers tremendous growth potential and the ability to make a difference in people’s lives, a job in Healthcare might be right for you.
What Does a Career in Healthcare Look Like?
If you are looking for a dynamic and growing career field, healthcare may be the right choice for you. According to recent statistics, employment in the healthcare is projected to grow 19 percent from 2014 to 2024. This is much faster than the average for all occupations, and is projected to add about 2.3 million new jobs. In fact, healthcare occupations will add more jobs than any other group of occupations, according to the BLS. This growth is partially because of a large aging population, but also because federal health insurance reform should increase the number of individuals who have access to health insurance.

Things To Know Before Starting A Nursing Career
B
efore you invest time and money into a nursing degree program, it’s critical to understand what a nursing career might entail. Here’s what you need to know about what it’s like to work in the nursing industry.
1. Nursing is the largest healthcare profession in the U.S.
According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), there are more than 3.8 million registered nurses (RNs) nationwide. These RNs comprise one of the largest segments of the overall American workforce and are the primary providers of patient care in hospitals and long-term care facilities. There are also more than 290,000 licensed nurse practitioners (NPs) in the U.S.
2. The industry is struggling to keep up with the rising demand for nurses
Even prior to the recent pandemic, the demand and job growth for nurses has been steadily rising. The Bureau of Labor Statistics

(BLS) projects an increase between now and 2028 for many common nursing occupations, including nursing assistants and orderlies (9%), RNs (12%), and nurse anesthetists, midwives, and practitioners (26%). The BLS cites multiple reasons for this growing demand, including increased emphasis on preventive care, rising rates of chronic conditions like diabetes and obesity, and greater need for healthcare among the aging baby boomer population. However, there is also a corresponding shortage of qualified nurses as many RNs currently in the field are nearing retirement age. AACN reports that while nursing degree program enrollment is up, the increase is not sufficient to meet the projected demand.

pediatric nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse educators, nurse managers, and travel nurses, for example. Each specialty has its own education and certification requirements, with some requiring master’s or doctorate-level degrees.
5. The majority of nurses are women, but more men are joining the field
Nursing is often thought of as a traditionally female-dominated profession. It’s true that nearly 90% of RNs and NPs are women, according to 2019 BLS data — but a rising number of men are pursuing nursing careers. This rewarding career field appeals to a wide range of caring, empathetic individuals, regardless of gender, so if you’re a man who’s interested in nursing, don’t let outdated career stereotypes deter you.
6. You don’t need an advanced degree to become a registered nurse (but it helps)
The minimum required education to become a registered nurse is an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN). Most ADN students complete their degree program and clinicals in about two years, at which point they can take the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) and find their first nursing job. However, a four-year bachelor program (BSN) or even a master’s degree (MSN) can put you at a distinct career advantage. A survey by AACN found that 82.1% of nursing employers have a “strong preference” for BSN candidates, and 43.2% of hospitals and other healthcare settings require a bachelor’s degree for nursing jobs. Celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month It’s here! National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) kicked off on October 1 st. How are you celebrating?
H
eld every October, NDEAM is a fitting time to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities. The 2021 NDEAM theme is America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion. NDEAM is led by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), but its true spirit lies in the many observances held at the grassroots level across the nation every year. The Campaign for Disability Employment (CDE) encourages organizations of all sizes and in all industries to participate in NDEAM. For ideas on supporting NDEAM, visit www.dol.gov/ndeam. Suggestions range from simple, such as putting up a poster, to comprehensive, such as implementing a disability education program. How ever you choose to take part, you’ll be playing an important role in fostering a more inclusive workforce, one where every person is recognized for his or her abilities—every day of every month.
Here’s wishing you a happy and active NDEAM 2021!

The workplace is an important part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The ideas below are just a few ways employers and their employees can participate, during October and all year long. For additional inspiration, check out Beyond NDEAM: Year-Round Employer Strategies for Advancing Disability Inclusion.
Review policies NDEAM is an opportune time to review your company's policies to ensure they convey a commitment to an inclusive workplace culture. For assistance in doing so, see Inclusion@Work (in particular the first section, "Lead the Way: Inclusive Business Culture").
Establish an employee resource group NDEAM is a perfect time to launch a disability Employee Resource Group (ERG). Sometimes referred to as Employee Networks or Affinity Groups, ERGs offer employees an opportunity to connect and receive support from others with similar backgrounds or interests. For more information, see A Toolkit for Establishing and Maintaining Successful Employee Resource Groups [PDF]. If your company already has a disability ERG, consider using NDEAM to remind employees about it through displays, information tables or other communication channels.
Create a display NDEAM is a great time to freshen up bulletin boards in break areas or other locations that employees frequent by posting positive messages about your company's commitment to
Holy Redeemer’s holistic approach to healing is unique among healthcare providers. Caring for the total person goes beyond the act of delivering excellent medical care. It involves meeting the emotional,

a disability-inclusive workforce. Start by putting up this year's NDEAM poster, available in English and Spanish. Additional display materials include the "What Can YOU Do?" poster series.
Train supervisors
Supervisors are the individuals closest to an organization's workforce. As part of NDEAM, consider conducting training to ensure they understand their role in fostering an inclusive workplace culture. Such training may include a review of relevant policies, including the process for providing reasonable accommodations. One easy way to provide such training is to make use of available "turn-key" training modules and available materials, such as the Building an Inclusive Workforce [PDF] tabletop desk guide.
Educate employees
It is critical that companies committed to disability inclusion effectively and regularly reinforce that commitment to employees. NDEAM offers an opportunity to do this through disability training or informal educational events such as brown-bag lunch discussions. Several ready-touse resources can assist in facilitating such activities, such as disability etiquette materials and the "I Can" public service announcement and accompanying workplace discussion guide. Another option is to contact local disability organizations to see if they offer workplace training programs. Information provided by www.whatcanyoudocampaign.org and www.dol.gov
