Asanother year comes to a close and a new one begins, I'm compelled to think about all we have (collectively) endured in the past couple of years, and it seems we have been waiting to be renewed by the passing of time. If what they say, "time heals all wounds," it's time for proof!
Yes, we are in a recession and the prices of everything have risen, but we are a resilient lot, aren't we? Have we not proven in the past that we can weather the storm regardless of how hard the wind blows? The stock market crash of 1929 comes to mind, as does WWII, the Vietnam war and the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Kennedy all in the same year. 9/11. Of course we will never forget the suffering we endured, but are we not stronger because we made it through? We know we can come out the other side stronger and more intent in tackling the next obstacle that life throws at us.
This past week my family and I celebrated my mother's 80th birthday. If that's not a time for reflection, I'm not sure what is. It was a grand event with my mother's love and joy of life radiating throughout the room filled with a few handfuls of her closest friends and family. She has certainly sustained a setback or two in life over the course of her eight decades on the planet, but she is showing none of the hardship, only strength. She is stronger because of the adversities she has endured...a good reminder for us all.

Artificial Intelligence , or AI, has already received a lot of buzz in the past decade, but it continues to be one of the new technology trends because of its notable effects on how we live, work and play are only in the early stages. AI is already known for its superiority in image and speech recognition, navigation apps, smartphone personal assistants, ride-sharing apps and so much more. Other than that AI will be used further to analyze interactions to determine underlying connections and insights, to help predict demand for services like hospitals enabling authorities to make better decisions about resource utilization, and to detect the changing patterns of customer behaviour by analyzing data in near real-time, driving revenues and enhancing personalized experiences.

Considering a Career in Engineering?
by Sam WoolfeEngineering is the application of mathematical and scientific principles to the invention, design, improvement, maintenance, and understanding of manmade structures, machines, materials, devices, systems, and processes. There are different types of engineering, including civil engineering , electrical engineering , mechanical engineering , chemical engineering , and computer engineering . Pursuing a career in engineering carries a number of advantages, but three of the main benefits are the transferable skills you gain, the high demand for engineers, and attractive compensation.

sought after in all sorts of industries. In fact, engineering boasts a panoply of transferable skills which means that – if you ever wanted to switch careers or industries – your engineering experience would prove very useful.
Other skills you would gain as an engineer include project planning, analytical thinking, logical thinking, attention to detail, communication, teamwork, numeracy, and computer literacy. In an application or interview for a job, you could bring up a complex engineering problem and cite the skills that enabled you to devise an effective solution and deliver high-quality results. Even if the job has nothing whatsoever to do with the type of engineering you specialised in, an employer will still be impressed by your ability to learn and utilise skills that are relevant to their business.

huge developments in technology, science, and computing, engineers will be in high demand over the coming decades, and they currently have one of the lowest unemployment rates in any of the major sectors. Some of the most in demand engineering jobs include software engineering jobs, aerospace engineering jobs, civil engineering jobs, environmental engineering jobs, and biomedical engineering jobs. You also don’t necessarily have to study a particular type of engineering in order to pursue a career in, say, mechanical engineering; nor do you even need to study engineering in
general in order to become an engineer. The 10 most popular degrees for people who work in engineering are Computer Science, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Economics, Business Administration, Information Science Studies, Civil Engineering, and Chemistry.
High Salary
Engineering is an extremely lucrative career path. In the US, a newly graduated electrical engineer can expect to earn over $57,000 a year, while mid-career salaries are nearly $90,000. The starting salary for a hardware computer engineer is nearly $64,000 per annum, while a mid-career salary is over $100,000. A graduate with a degree aerospace engineering can expect to earn over $65,000 in their first job, which will then rise to over $103,000 in the middle of their career. A chemical engineer has perhaps the highest starting salary, at $94,000 a year. Statistics show year after year that engineers have the highest average starting salary. Plus, if you really excel in your career path, then the financial rewards will be huge. A computer hardware engineer in the top 10% of earners, for example, can make over $170,000 a year.
If employability and financial security are major concerns for you, then a career in engineering is worth serious consideration. However, the benefits of engineering extend far beyond salary. Engineers make a real difference to the world by designing, maintaining, and improving so many things that we all depend on and benefit from in our day-to-day lives. A career in engineering can be meaningful and fulfilling for this very reason.

Addressing the Burdens of American Nurses
According to a new survey, American nurses are overwhelmed by job demands, a long-brewing situation only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. While the majority of nurses continue to be dedicated to the care of patients, many are considering leaving the profession at a time when staff shortages are part of the problem. But there’s hope, according to industry experts, who say that understanding these challenges can lead to meaningful and necessary reforms.
The 2022 national survey, “The Future of Nursing: A Profession in Crisis,” of nurses and student nurses, was conducted by Cross Country, a market-leading techenabled workforce solutions platform
and advisory firm, in partnership with Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing.
Nevertheless, ongoing challenges have created undue burdens for nurses, with pay rates/compensation (86%), staff shortages (53%), stress (39%) and burnout (35%) cited as top career dissatisfiers.
This frustration has put the industry in crisis: 28% of nurses indicated their desire to leave the profession has increased dramatically since the
We’re growing, and have great opportunities for forward-thinking, dedicated, compassionate individuals like you.
Overall, the study revealed that nurses remain passionate about patient care, with 66% citing helping people through meaningful work as a main driver for staying in the field.
Strategies to transform the nursing profession include an ongoing examination of pay rates and retention practices.
pandemic, while those who said their desire to stay has dropped from 24% in 2021 to 4% in 2022. This translates to a real potential loss of talent in hospitals, physicians’ offices, longterm care facilities and other healthcare settings. Of those surveyed, 23% plan to look for a new career in 1-2 years and 13% plan to retire in 1-5 years.
“We had hoped that as the pandemic eased, nurses would have better balance, mental health and working conditions, but we are not there and as a result, nurses are leaving the profession in droves,” says John A. Martins, president and chief executive officer, Cross Country Healthcare. “The time to fix these mounting problems is now.”
To that end, Cross Country is deploying several strategies to transform the nursing profession. These include an ongoing examination of pay rates and retention practices; identifying new pathways for education, licensing, and talent development; focusing on flexibility and growth opportunities; and investments toward innovation to strengthen the nursing workforce.
The company continues to invest heavily in technology and digital transformation to support these strategies. Among these initiatives is a new website dedicated to nursing candidates. Found at crosscountry.com, the site aims to help health care professionals find and engage with potential job opportunities more effectively.
Identifying new pathways for nursing education is also a critical stepping stone towards reforming the profession and addressing healthcare provider shortages. That’s why the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing offers accredited programs at all levels to prepare and train students, including various tracks for a BSN, Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), PhD and
DNP focused on Caring Science. Also offered are a BSN-DNP program with a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner concentration and post-graduate dermatology and telehealth certificate courses, as well as other concentrations that intersect innovation and technology.
“Nursing is the greatest profession in the world. The experience you will get is priceless,” said one of the survey respondents. “Make sure you’re getting into nursing for the right reasons because I love coming to work and look forward to caring for patients every day. No two patients are alike, so every day in nursing is like a new experience and adventure. And you make the difference.”

organizations are looking for ways to improve diversity and inclusion in their workplaces. However, identifying diversity and inclusion best practices in healthcare can pose a challenge. The following strategies can guide healthcare organizations when developing effective strategies to recruit and retain diverse staff.
Areas to Address
Efforts to improve diversity and inclusion in a healthcare setting should focus on the following areas:
Diversity
Organizations should work to understand the backgrounds of associates and the patients they serve. These background factors include the following:
• Culture
• Gender
• Religious beliefs
• Sexual orientation
• Socioeconomic status
Healthcare organizations are looking for ways to improve diversity and inclusion in their workplaces.
In addition to diversity and inclusion training and discussions for current staff, healthcare organizations should strive to hire and retain a workforce representing the patient populations they serve.

Equity
Efforts cannot end with creating a workforce comprised of people from different backgrounds. Equity involves making sure healthcare associates have the right tools to effectively do their jobs while ensuring patients have what they need to benefit from the best treatment practices.
Examples of Diversity and Inclusion Best Practices in Healthcare
Bolstering diversity and inclusion efforts gives healthcare organizations the chance to help patients receiving care and associates providing that care. Diversity and inclusion best practices in healthcare include the following:
Establish a diversity and inclusion team with ambassadors: Dedicated diversity and inclusion ambassadors can bring cultural awareness and perspectives to the forefront. They can challenge ingrained ways of providing services that can leave some patients feeling uncomfortable.
Be a part of Our Firelands Family
Health isn’t just physical.
Mental health is crucial for overall well-being. Firelands provides inpatient and outpatient mental health, alcohol and drug treatment to northern Ohioans with these conditions. We offer a competitive salary, retention bonus, an excellent benefit package and many other incentives!
Inclusion means giving associates and patients from all backgrounds a voice in providing and receiving high-quality care.
Make diversity and inclusion issues an everyday conversation: Diversity and inclusion issues cannot exist as a one-time training module but can instead be part of daily operations. Organizations can ensure regular communication by creating daily team huddles that offer a safe space.
Encourage training and development: Don’t overlook formal training. Training and development programs can educate staff about recognizing unconscious biases to challenge assumptions.
Create development opportunities for women and minorities: Women and minorities receive fewer assignments that can spur career growth. However, healthcare organizations cannot develop programs and think they’ve done enough. Organizations must also effectively communicate the availability of programs and champion associates who participate.

... Judiciary Interpreter and Translator
Janis Palma is interviewed by Patricia TateWhat is a judiciary interpreter and translator?
Judiciary interpreters and translators facilitate communication in legal settings. Many people think interpreting and translating are the same, but there’s a difference. Translation converts the written word—such as articles, books, instructions, and documents—from one language to another. Interpretation converts spoken messages —attorney-client interviews, doctor-patient consultations, speeches, and so forth—from one language to another.
With interpreting and translating, you want to specialize so you become an expert in the terminology and concepts of your chosen field. Those who choose the legal field are sometimes also called court interpreters or legal translators, but judiciary encompasses all the work we do inside and outside of court.
Describe what you do.
What I do most often is interpret for people in our justice system who do not speak or understand English. My function enables communication between them and the attorneys representing them, the judge, and anyone else who needs to communicate with them, like probation officers. If there’s a document that needs to be translated, I do that too.
For example, if someone is giving testimony in court, then I will interpret out loud: taking turns with the person asking the questions, generally interpreting from English into Spanish; and with the person answering, generally interpreting from Spanish into English. If there’s a letter sent to the judge in Spanish, I translate that letter into English so the judge can read it.
Do interpreters and translators work alone or as part of a team?
Translators usually work alone, but interpreters work in teams for extended proceedings, such as trials. We help each other with any difficulties that may arise, like sound issues, or perhaps one of us needs the other one to look up a term. Working as a team also means we take turns interpreting to minimize mental fatigue.

What’s a typical workday like?
I hardly have what I’d call a typical workday. I may go to court for a trial, or I may go for a series of short hearings. I work in federal court most of the time and travel to other districts outside of the city where I live, so my workday is not in the same location all the time.
for, say, a short hearing?
If I’m working on a trial, I’ll report to the courtroom about 15 minutes before the judge has summoned everyone to be there, check to make sure the interpreting equipment is working, gather whatever case-related documents the case manager has for me and my partner, and settle down to study as much as I can before the judge comes out.
If I’m working a series of short hearings, I follow the same pattern except that in most courts, I’ll get a calendar instead of case documents. If it’s expected to be a brief calendar, I’ll cover it by myself. If it’s expected to be lengthy, I’ll likely have a partner working with me. Calendars can
include any of the stages of a criminal case other than a trial, including arraignment, bail hearing, or sentencing.
Do you have any other duties outside of court?
Sometimes we interpret for a probation officer conducting an interview in order to prepare a report for the judge, or between an attorney and his or her client. Other proceedings outside of court include depositions (testimony for civil or criminal cases), which are usually taken in a law office but can be taken just about anywhere: someone’s living room, a dairy farm, a shrimp boat. It all depends on the type of case and where the witnesses are.
How did you get started in your career?
I happened upon it by pure serendipity. I answered an ad by an agency looking for someone with a degree in a foreign language. I had a degree in Spanish, majoring in literature. I was chosen by the agency, trained, and eventually sent by them to take the federal certification exam, which was brand new when I took it in 1981. It has been my passion ever since.

If you want to be an interpreter or translator, focus on critical thinking, learn to be analytical, and become familiar with the theory of translation and some basic concepts in linguistics. All of those will help you understand the reason why things are done this or that way. Be inquisitive, and never think you’ve learned all you need to learn.

Women Business Owners are Optimistic About the Future
Even as they ride out inflationary pressures, supply chain disruptions and economic uncertainty, women owners and executives of small and mid-size majority-women-owned business es have an optimistic outlook about the nearterm future of their businesses, according to a recent survey.
The PNC Bank survey found that women busi ness owner (WBO) expectations for their own companies remain strong, with 41% feeling highly optimistic -- up from 29% in the fall of 2020 but down from 67% in the fall of 2021 -- while the share of those feeling pessimistic has held constant at just 1%.
The survey also indicated that more than eight in 10 women business owners are very confident about their future success and nearly half say it comes from their own hard work and drive. Similarly, 79% of WBOs are very satisfied with their role as a business owner or leader compared to 67% of men business owners (MBOs).
“We are seeing a new pattern of self-empowerment among women business owners that is very encouraging,” said Beth Marcello, director of PNC Women’s Business Development.
“Their own hard work to survive the pandemic is the source of their confidence and optimism today.”
The survey suggests that women have a take charge, can-do attitude. When it was difficult to find employees, 49% of WBOs versus one-third of MBOs say that they or their managers stepped in to cover open staff hours themselves. Additionally, they’re focused on growth: 81% surveyed are Woman Business Enterprise-certified, 73% market their certification, and 88% say that certification has been a helpful business development tool.
“For the first time, we have evidence of increased financial confidence among women business owners. They are two times more likely than men to say they’re considering a new loan or line of credit to support business growth,” said Marcello. “They are monitoring their cash position and have a cash reserve, but they’re investing excess cash rather than stockpiling it; they are continuing to leverage the increased efficiency of the digital financial tools they migrated to during the pandemic; and they are confidently increasing pricing as the economy allows for it.”

Meeting the Challenges
While WBOs have concerns about inflation, profitability and the supply chain, they believe they’re prepared for these challenges. Although similar portions of WBOs and MBOs experienced supply chain issues in the past year, 79% of WBOs believe they have the right amount of inventory they need to succeed.
WBOs also intend to maintain or expand on policies they initiated during the pandemic, including allowing flexible work arrangements (48%), increasing compensation (38%) and implementing employee health or safety enhancements (33%). WBOs are more likely than MBOs to adopt Corporate Social Responsibility policies or practices, including gender pay equity (34% vs. 9%) and diversity and inclusion (29% vs. 14%). These disparities could be an indication of why fewer WBOs (30%) than MBOs (43%) are finding it harder to hire new staff compared to six months ago.
Identifying and addressing challenges faced by women financial decision makers is a component of PNC’s Project 257: Accelerating Women’s Financial Equality, an initiative to help close the 257-year economic gender gap. While the pandemic created new economic challenges, many with lasting effects, women business owners largely overcame these obstacles, taking away lessons that have inspired their optimism and confidence today.

The Importance of Inclusion in the Workplace: How to Create a More Inclusive Workforce
By Dr. KristieIntoday’s business world, the most successful companies embrace diversity and inclusion. By creating a workplace that is inclusive of all types of people, businesses can tap into a wider pool of talent and ideas. Creating an inclusive workplace is not only the right thing to do but also makes good business sense. Respected and valued employees are more likely to be productive and engaged. Additionally, businesses that are supportive of diversity and inclusion are more attractive to top talent.
Check your biases at the door and ensure everyone is equally represented on projects and in meetings, regardless of their race, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, or belief system.
There are many benefits to creating an inclusive workplace, and it starts with a commitment to diversity and inclusion. If your business has not yet made this commitment, now is the time to do so. Creating an inclusive workplace isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s also good for business. Here are five ways to make your workplace more inclusive.
Create a Culture of Inclusion
Check your biases at the door and ensure everyone is equally represented on projects and in meetings, regardless of their race, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, or belief system.
Foster an inclusive environment by using inclusive language. This includes terms like “we” and “us” instead of “they” or “them,” as well as phrases like “people with disabilities” instead of “disabled people.” In job descriptions and postings, avoid gender-specific pronouns (e.g., he/him/his) when referring to employees.
Instead, use inclusive pronouns (e.g., they/their). In interviews, ask yourself if the questions you are asking would be offensive if asked about any other group in society (for example: “Do you want children?”).
Hold Yourself Accountable
Do you know how you come across to others? Have you ever stopped to think about why someone might not want to work
with you or for you? Reflect on how you interact with employees and other people. Identify where your biases lie, so you can root them out before they show up in workplace interactions with colleagues or clients. Understanding how you come across to others is not always easy. It can be helpful to ask for feedback from your team or colleagues. This can help you identify areas where you need to improve.
Encourage Employees to Speak Up
Encourage your employees to speak up if they feel mistreated. If someone says something, thank them for sharing their perspective and ask what you can do to be more inclusive. Then, learn from it. Are there ways in which your company could better support employees who feel discriminated against?
Celebrate Differences and Similarities
Whether you’re a manager or employee, big differences can be a source of inspiration--but so can little ones. Celebrating the differences between people in your workplace will show them that their personal characteristics are accepted and appreciated, not something to be ashamed of. You could also celebrate similarities with coworkers to build camaraderie and trust with other employees, who might feel more comfortable working side by side with those with similar values or interests.
Provide Training About Avoiding Biases
To ensure that all your employees receive bias training, offer it in a variety of formats. For example, if your company is located in a city where many people are still learning English, provide training in more than one language. If some employees have mobility issues or other disabilities that make them unable to travel to a physical location for training, consider providing classroom-style instruction via video chat or another technological option.
To be effective, the training must be interactive and engaging. Those who participate in the program should feel they

have learned something new after participating. And those who complete the program should apply what they’ve learned later when interacting with coworkers.
The focus of this type of program should not only be on avoiding bias. It should also emphasize how individuals can better themselves through self-reflection and evaluation (i.e., looking at their own experiences from different perspectives).
Why Inclusion Matters
Inclusion is about valuing the unique contributions of each person. This means everyone can contribute their ideas, opinions, and skills. It also helps teams work together more smoothly because people can communicate openly and honestly. Teams can reach agreements more easily when there’s an environment of trust, mutual respect, and openness among team members.
Inclusion makes team members feel valued. A team member who feels included will be more willing to give their all toward accomplishing the team’s goals because they feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves. It’s a group effort rather than simply working against others for personal gain (or survival).
Conclusion
Inclusion will help your team work better together and make team members feel valued. It’s essential for a company to have an inclusive workforce, not just because it’s the right thing to do but also because it improves productivity and profitability. There’s a solid business case for creating a diverse workforce, but if you still need convincing, think about how much more enjoyable your job will be if everyone gets along well! That’s a reward in itself.

Why
Should Step Up
Game During the Holiday Season
While the holiday season is full of fun, festivities and meaningful time spent with family and friends, it’s often accompanied by work and school deadlines, tedious todo lists and shopping stress. Here are a few reasons to step up your self-care routine during this busy period so you can usher in the new year, happily and healthily:
Catch Some Zs
The holidays come on the heels of the end of Daylight Saving Time, and your
body may still be adjusting to the time change. Plus, with all the commitments of the season, you may be more likely to be pulling early mornings and late nights. These factors combined could be leaving you feeling drowsy during the day. Even more concerning, lack of sleep over time can contribute to a number of chronic health issues. Set yourself up for greater alertness and better health this winter by carving out time for sufficient, high-quality sleep. Having trouble nodding off? Check out sleep aid apps that offer soundtracks, guided meditation and breathing exercises.
Gain Smile Confidence
According to a 2020 Cigna Dental Report, smile satisfaction is one of
the top three drivers of self confidence among U.S. adults. So while practicing good oral care and maintaining a solid beauty and self-care routine is always important, it’s especially so during a time of year when you may be eating extra sweets and smiling more for the camera.
The good news is that you can give yourself the gift of a healthy, beautiful smile you can feel confident about, starting at an affordable price with the new Oral-B iO4 + iO5 electric toothbrush series. Multiple brushing modes offer a personalized clean, and when you brush for 2 minutes, which is what the American Dental Association recommends, the brush lights up to celebrate the accomplishment. What’s more, the iO Series 5 provides you with real-time tracking and coaching via the Oral-B app, helping you commit to better oral care throughout the holidays and beyond.
The many innovative features of an Oral-B iO toothbrush, which include a pressure sensor that helps guide optimal brushing to protect gums and teeth, will help ensure you get a purifying, clean feel like you just left the dentist. In fact, 96% of Oral-B iO users feel more confident about their oral health when using an iO brush. To learn more, visit oralb.com.
Reduce Stress
The holidays are supposed to be fun, and yet, stress often creeps its way into the festivities. To be more present for all the joyful moments the season has to offer, keep your stress levels in check by prioritizing a bit of “me time” each day. Whether you use that time to take a brisk walk around the neighborhood, check out that fitness class you’ve been wanting to try or to curl up with a good book, you’ll be giving your mind and spirit the mental refresh that it needs.
During the season of giving, don’t neglect your own needs. For greater health and happiness, give your beauty and selfcare routine a tune-up over the holidays.

Why Diversity in Law Enforcement is Important
Diversity in law enforcement is a concept entangled with political interpretations and sensationalist media, but just because a question or concept is difficult does not mean it isn’t worth exploring.
Today, we’ll be looking at diversity in law enforcement and why it is so vital to the proper prevention of crime and keeping people safe.
Better Communication
Communication is vital for effective law enforcement and crime prevention. Law enforcement officers are there to serve the community and their jobs are made that much harder if that cannot communicate effectively.
Addressing this can be as simple as teaching officers some of the major non-English languages spoken in the U.S, such as Spanish or Chinese. However, one of the benefits of having diversity in the force and of diversity training is that
officers are able to communicate with cultural nuance.
As an example, some cultures have different attitudes to personal space. In a tense situation, understanding the difference between aggression and a different attitude to personal space can be hugely important.
Earning the Public’s Trust
Just as with proper communication, earning the trust of the public is paramount to effective law enforcement.
An understanding of the nuance of other cultures, the perception that law enforcement officers share, or at least understand some of the same experiences as those from other cultures, and the understanding that other cultures and races are welcome in law enforcement are paramount to building public trust.

Changing Negative Perceptions
For some communities, the attitudes towards law enforcement can be overwhelmingly negative. They are often seen as outsiders or as a threat, rather than serving the community at large.
Part of this negative perception can be changed through further diversifying law enforcement because having representatives of a certain community or culture within law enforcement helps to prevent communities from identifying them as outsiders.
Additionally, having members of a wider range of communities within law enforcement normalizes the behaviors and attitudes of those communities with the wider law enforcement spectrum, allowing officers from across the U.S to reach a greater understanding of the people they protect.
Diversity in law enforcement is just one of the important issues that you’ll study as part of your time in our Criminal Justice program at Northwest Career College.
