've always subscribed to the "pendulum theory" to help me navigate how things work in the world. I believe there is an inherent fluidity in the way all kinds of things ebb and flow to keep things balanced.
I adopted this belief fairly early in my life; I may have been about 12 years old. I was a child full of despair, and wanted my environment to be anything than what it was. Then one day, without me having a hand in it at all, it changed for the better. I learned at that time, if you wait long enough, everything changes, and that change is really the only thing we can count on.
We have a choice in how we view what’s happening around us. We can choose to view any situation as one that’s continuously worsening and will continue to do so, or we can choose to recognize that all situations are temporary…and ultimately the pendulum will swing in the other direction...that change is something we can count on.
When you feel yourself experiencing stress over the way lievolving, pause. Remind yourself that life is a pendulum and that it will reverse its current motion and move toward more favorable results.

Why We Celebrate Black History Month
by Kay Boatner
Every February, people in the United States celebrate the achievements and history of African Americans as part of Black History Month. This article tells you how it started, what it honors, and why it's important to celebrate.
How It Started
In1915, in response to the lack of information on the accomplishments of Black people available to the public, historian Carter G. Woodson co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. In 1926, the group declared the second week of February as “Negro History Week” to recognize the contributions of African Americans to U.S. history. Few people studied Black history and it wasn’t included in textbooks prior to the creation of Negro History Week.
This week was chosen because it includes the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist (someone who wanted to end the practice of enslaving people), and former U.S. president Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln led the United States during the Civil War, which was primarily fought over the enslavement of Black people in the country. Many schools and leaders began recognizing the week after its creation.
The week-long event officially became Black History Month in 1976 when U.S. president Gerald Ford extended the recognition to “honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Black History Month has been celebrated in the United States every February since.
What It Honors
Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.
Among the notable figures often spotlighted during Black History Month are Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , who fought for equal rights for Blacks during the 1950s and ’60s; Thurgood Marshall African-American justice appointed to the United States Supreme Court in 1967; Mae Jemison , who became the first female African-American astronaut to travel to space in 1992; and Barack Obama , who was elected the first-ever African-American president of the United States in 2008.
Why is it important for companies to celebrate Black History Month?
In recent years, attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) has grown at companies across industries and geographies.
An estimated $15.4 billion is to be spent on DE&I-related initiatives by 2026 (almost double the $7.5 billion spent in 2020), according to the Global Parity Alliance , an action-oriented cross-industry group committed to advancing DEI globally, within organizations and across the corporate ecosystem.
Juneteenth at work while committing to driving measurable change for the future.
It offers lessons in empathy, compassion, and cultural understanding. It brings more humanity into the workplace. There is still much work to be done to build toward a more diverse and inclusive company culture. And there is no better reminder than exploring the past, present, and future of the Black experience. So let’s look at how your teams can recognize and celebrate Black History this month and all year round.
5 WAYS TO HONOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH AT WORK
From supporting Black-owned businesses to honoring Black leaders in history and today, there are many ways to celebrate this month at work. Here, we go over 15 of them.
1.Support Employee Resource oups
But progress has been slow – even slower in recent years due to the pandemic. In the past five years, only one in three companies has made progress in executive-team diversity, while shrinking job opportunities disproportionately have affected minorities.
Black History Month is not only about recognizing past achievements, it is also about actively working to continue dismantling barriers Black people are facing, both in and out of the workplace.
What
does Black History Month teach us about building more human workplaces?
Black History Month offers the opportunity to educate and learn about Black history and Black culture, to acknowledge and widely celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black Americans, and to focus on the issues and disparities that persist in the workplace today, just as when you celebrate
As DE&I becomes more prevalent across organizations, so too are Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). ERGs are voluntary, employee-led groups that work to foster a diverse, inclusive workplace aligned with an organization’s values. The groups exist to provide support and help members in personal or career development as well as to create a safe space where employees can share experiences and build connections. Allies may also be invited to join ERGs to support their colleagues. Whether you’re new to your organization or an existing team member, look for opportunities to get involved in ERG activities. Getting involved may mean participating in events or volunteer opportunities, asking questions and keeping an open mind, telling leaders and other colleagues about the value of ERG work – or simply showing up to listen and learn more. Listening is often one of the best ways of showing support – and this is true during Black History Month as well as all of the heritage months throughout the year.
2. Encourage lear ning about Black History Month
Inspire your teams to learn more about Black historical figures by highlighting stories and resources somewhere where employees will see them. There’s a trove of material out there, including:
• NYT’s “Black History, Continued”
• National Archives on Black History
• Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture’s Searchable Museum
If your organization has a DE&I ERG, this can be a safe space for people to discuss what’s been shared from different perspectives.
And, if employees have students at home, ask how they’re

being taught about this month in school. Educators may use resources like these apps and websites highlighted by Common Sense Education, the History Channel’s Black History Study Guides , lesson plans from the “Black History, Continued” series, or other teacher resources for the month. This could also be great fodder for discussion in a parent-focused ERG.
It’s also a chance to see what your local area or region is doing to celebrate and honor Black History Month, and how your immediate surroundings have been impacted and influenced by Black excellence. Take a team field trip and use the time to forge closer bonds by learning together.
3.Bring in guest speakers
Black History Month is rich with inspirational accounts of countless historical figures who have left their indelible mark on the walls of history, such as:
• Carter G. Woodson
• Langston Hughes
• Sojourner Truth
• Jackie Robinson
Bringing in an informed speaker is one of the best ways to educate your workforce on Black history, Black experiences, and Black achievements. They are essential educators during this period – and throughout the year – as they teach organizations how to embrace and celebrate diversity and inclusion.
4. Use employee recognition as a driver of DE&I
If your workplace has an employee recognition platform , you can use that as a vehicle to drive larger organizational goals around DE&I initiatives or any activities that support Black
History Month.
In today’s workplace, having an employee recognition platform at work is imperative for nurturing feelings of inclusion and belonging among all employees, and especially people of color.
In fact, after one year in a recognition program, Asian, Black, and Hispanic employee turnover dropped 20% and turnover among women dropped 17%, according to Workhuman recognition data across 712,000 employees.
5. Create a safe space for employees to ask questions
With ERGs becoming a mainstay in the corporate world –especially at companies that value DE&I – it paves the way for open and honest discussions across the organization.
It’s important to allow employees to voice concerns and raise issues anonymously, and ERGs often provide a safe space for employees to do so. It’s equally important for employees’ psychological safety , however, for an organization’s leadership team to demonstrate trust and accountability when responding to these concerns.
Ask Me Anything (or AMA) style formats, typically conducted virtually, allow the audience to ask questions on a wide variety of topics. They can be effective in a workplace setting, as they allow for open and honest dialogue about topics that may not have been broached in the past.

What the End of DEI Programs Means for Technology Workers
by Leslie Stevens-Huffman
Ahandful of prominent tech companies, including Meta and Amazon, recently announced plans to scale back or set aside some or all of their diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
Setting aside the society-level debate over DEI at the moment, how will this program pullback impact tech workers and job seekers? What do you need to know to navigate the changes effectively?
While the situation is still in flux, we asked three experts to share their assessments as well as some tips for overcoming any negative consequences and potentially taking advantage of any positive changes as companies roll back their formal DEI efforts.
Diversity Has Moved from Checkbox to Strategic Advantage
One of the positive outcomes of DEI is that many companies now recognize the positive impact of diverse teams on creativity and innovation. Through first-hand experience, they have learned that diverse teams are more likely to consider different ideas and perspectives, ultimately leading to more innovative products, services and approaches, explained Rhonda Moret, founder and CEO of ElevatedDiversity. In fact, companies in the top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity are 39 percent more likely to outperform those in the bottom quartile.
Companies that have reaped these benefits will most likely continue seeking diversity in hiring and when assembling teams, according to Joelle Emerson, co-founder & CEO of Paradigm, a culture and inclusion platform: “I see this moment as less than a retreat on DEI and more of an evolution.”
• More than seven times more likely to feel respected at work
• Twice as likely to find purpose in their work
Given the benefits, top perfor ming companies are unlikely to abandon their core values or erase the progress they’ve made.
Use the change to your advantage by seeking out organizations with strong cultures. If you’re in a workplace that’s moving away from the acronym DEI, understand what they’re doing instead. Is your company still prioritizing inclusion? Or investing in processes that level the playing field in areas like hiring, performance management and promotions? If so, your company may still be aligned with the values of DEI… but just calling it by a different name.
Many organizations are reaffirming their commitments to inclusion, belonging and fairness, even if they shift how they talk about it or the acronyms they use.
Many organizations are reaffirming their commitments to inclusion, belonging and fairness, even if they shift how they talk about it or the acronyms they use. Research from Emerson’s firm confirms that employees who work in diverse cultures are:
• Nearly 10 times more likely to be engaged
Renewed Emphasis on Merit-Based Hiring and Promotions
While merit has always been a consideration in hiring and advancement decisions, many organizations will be placing a stronger emphasis on selecting candidates solely based on their qualifications and skills, without considering factors like race, gender or other protected characteristics.
In the past few years, many companies had already moved toward skills-based hiring by removing college-degree requirements from some of their job postings, in an effort to expand

the talent pool. Mandating a diverse slate approach also required recruiters and managers to identify and consider qualified candidates from underrepresented groups.
Positions that have gone unfilled for significant periods may become top priorities for recruiters, opening the door to any and all candidates who meet the qualifications. Take advantage of the level playing field by reconnecting with hiring managers and emphasizing your experience and the value you offer to an employer.
Cultures Have Shifted
Slow progress is still progress. Over the last few years, many companies have become more inclusive by initiating diversity training and anti-bias hiring strategies. They have made strides in diversifying their workforces and fostering a culture that values and respects people from different backgrounds, genders and ethnicities. And yes, companies that are more diverse tend to hire more diverse people. In fact, corporate boards in the U.S. are more diverse than ever, signaling a permanent cultural shift that is likely to endure.
It's important to note that the laws haven’t changed. For instance, Title VII forbids discrimination in employment based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin, with some limited exceptions.
However, even if your company rolls back its DEI policies, you are likely to still have some ability to influence your work environment.
Culture is built on a team-by-team basis, noted Karen JawMadson, principal of Co.-Design of Work Experience. It doesn’t necessarily require a budget—just commitment, engagement, persistent follow-through and resilience. Even without formal DEI infrastructure, leaders and employees can positively influence their immediate environments through allyship, meaningful relationships and personal development.
Anti-Bias Laws are Still in Effect
Some experts see a potential downside to the end of corporate DEI programs. It’s possible that some tech workers, particularly those in marginalized groups, will experience challenges with hiring, promotions and recognition, cautioned Jaw-Madson.
However, it's important to note that the laws haven’t changed. For instance, Title VII forbids discrimination in employment based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin, with some limited exceptions.
Workers can still file discrimination complaints with the EEOC, local labor boards or pursue lawsuits against employers. “For those negatively impacted, I urge you to double down on your growth,” Jaw-Madson noted.

Reasons Why Engineering Might be the Right Career Field for You
Engineers do things that others only imagine. In fact, if it can be envisioned, an engineer can work to make it possible. If a modern-day bridge exists, a civil engineer made it possible. Structural engineers and architectural engineers work together to construct a building that will withstand galeforce winds and earthquakes. Biomedical engineers design prosthetic limbs and artificial organs.
Engineering is, in fact, a broad term that may be applied to various technological and scientific fields including medicine, architecture, and environmentalism. Engineering is typically divided into five main branches:
• Mechanical engineering
• Electrical engineering
• Civil engineering
• Chemical engineering
• Industrial engineering
Although these are considered the “traditional” branches of engineering, there are many other types of engineers,
many more engineering subfields, and interdisciplinary engineering fields.
In fact, there are more than 50 types of engineering careers from which to choose and lots of great reasons why you’ll love having a career as an engineer, including:
Have a Successful Career but Still Have Time to Enjoy Life
Engineers make a good salary (even starting salaries) and find lots of job satisfaction in their careers. But, perhaps, one of its greatest advantages is that you’ll have time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Engineering jobs typically allow you to find a good balance between your work and personal life.

As an engineer, you can let your imagination run wild as you improvise and confront new situations. Engineering is, in fact, the ideal field for independent thinkers.
Engineers work to design and build new things and/or work to make existing items or situations better, often coming up
with solutions that are innovative and new. A team of engineers, which could include mechanical engineers, software engineers, and electrical engineers, for instance, can work together to design and build a medical diagnostic machine that will save lives. Engineers are problem solvers. Many engineers go on to create new inventions and receive patents for their ideas.
Highly Respected
Engineers are highly respected individuals. They work hard to make the world around them a better place to live for themselves and for others, and they do things that others only dream about.
Work with Other Great Engineers
You’ll get the opportunity to work with other creative individuals whose ways of thought will challenge you to see things in a whole new and exciting way. You’ll stretch your talents in ways you may never have thought possible because of the people you work with.
age annual salary of someone with a bioengineering degree is $98,340. The top ten percent, however, can expect to make around $149,000 annually. Even starting salaries are exciting for new graduates. Mechanical engineers, for instance, have an average annual starting salary of $ 63,527
What You Do Matters
As an engineer, God can use you to make a difference. The positive effect engineers have on their communities and the world around them is easily witnessed. Buildings withstand whatever nature has to throw at them, babies in neonatal intensive care units thrive, water systems bring life-saving water to remote areas of the world, and cell phones do so much more than allow us to talk to someone anywhere in the world. Engineers bring creativity to life.
In fact, engineering takes teamwork. As an engineer, you’ll have the opportunity to interact with lots of people both inside and outside your chosen field. You’ll be surrounded by people who will challenge you, people who will cause you to stretch and grow, and people who will inspire you.
Opportunities to Solve Problems
A career in engineering gives you the opportunity to solve problems and design things that really matter, things that make the world a better place in which to live. As an engineer, you can use your God-given talents to find solutions that no one else has thought of; it’s an opportunity to make your mark on the world.
Never Be Bored
Imagine a job where your natural abilities enable you to create things that have only previously existed in your mind — a job where thoughts come to life. That’s what an engineering career can do for you. There’s never a reason to be bored when you’re an engineer.
Competitive Salary
Engineers earn a very competitive salary. For example, according to the United States Department of Labor , the aver-

Engineering and fieldwork often go hand-in-hand. An engineer’s creation may wind up far from their home. They may design a bridge that is to be built in Paris, develop safe-drinking water systems that will be used in Africa or develop a farming technique that helps feed the poor all over the world. The engineer’s presence could be needed during the initial install or build, or the engineer may need to be onsite to figure out and fix a problem.
Have an Exciting Career
An engineering degree can provide you with a career that has lots of freedom and excitement. Employers value employees who’ve taken the time to pursue an engineering degree. They know the engineer is well-educated and has been taught problem-solving and analytical skills, valuable tools that will benefit the company.
Change the World
As an engineer, you’ll have the opportunity to make a difference and change the world in ways that only you can imagine. Imagine being involved in the creation of artificial organs and other lifesaving medical equipment, pollution controls to preserve the environment, or low-cost building materials to assist in the fight against global poverty. Engineers make a difference in the world around them, saving lives, preventing disease, reducing poverty, and protecting the world we live in.
