Nadine rebrands and writes for the superstars Carol Service on the Walls Derry singer Nadine Coyle is bouncing back from her flop solo album by writing songs for superstars Celine Dion and Aretha Franklin. The Girls Aloud star’s first solo single, Insatiable, failed to make an impact in the U.K. charts last year (Nov10), and her album of the same name didn’t fare any better - limping in at number 47. The singer has stayed out of the spotlight following the album’s poor performance, and she is now concentrating on writing new tracks for some of the world’s most famous stars. She told The Sun: “I’m working on a Celine Dion project
- her comeback. Her people contacted my people and now I’m doing that. “And I wrote another song for my album with a great producer and he contacted me saying Aretha Franklin wanted to try my song. It’s amazing to me that songwriting is an actual job.” Despite recently dismissing Cheryl and the Girl’s Aloud gang as ‘work colleagues’, Nadine insisted she was ‘proud’ of the group’s success and wrote: ‘9 years of Girls Aloud today. @NicolaRoberts @CherylCole Sarah Kimberley. I am so proud of us, Loads of love.’
The second annual Carol Service on the Walls is taking place on December 19 at 7pm on the walls opposite First Derry Presbyterian Church. Following the success of last year’s event, where approximately 300 people braved the cold and icy conditions to attend the Carol Service, organizers have decided to make this an annual event. The Carol Service is being organized by Rev David Latimer and Fr Canny with support from Derry City Council Community Relations Officers. It is open to everyone in the city to come along to sing Carols and get into the festive spirit. The event will give people the opportunity to take time out from the shopping and organising to reflect on the essence of Christmas and its religious and spiritual significance. Most people get caught up in the hysteria and buying of gifts and actually forget that Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Christ, the carol service will give people the opportunity to reconnect with Christmas. For further information about the event please contact Rev David Latimer at First Derry Presbyterian Church.

Guildhall on the Move Historic building will be shut for start of City of Culture As Derry gears up for the dual celebrations of City of Culture and the 400th anniversary of the city’s historic walls in 2013, the building at the heart of the city’s life is set to undergo dramatic internal renovations alongside the external makeover which is nearing completion. External works have seen restoration of the stonework, roofs, windows and stained glass of the iconic building, as well as the famous Guildhall Clock. Throughout the on-going external works life within the historic building continued uninterrupted. Council staff and elected members worked through any disruptions to ensure the wonderful building was open to the public and services were delivered as usual and for as long as possible. Now, staff and elected members are busy making preparations for some of the biggest internal renovations and rearrangement of services in the lifetime of the building. To facilitate works and internal changes to services, both the Guildhall and Harbour Museum will now close to the public expected to re-open early 2013. Interim service arrangements are in place to ensure minimal disruption to the public.
Colin Sharp, Superintendent of the Guildhall (pictured with Mayor Devenny) officially closed the gates to the public with services relocated until further notice. The Mayoral Office will be relocated to Derry City Council Offices, Monthly Council Meetings will now take place at the Great Hall at Magee University and Committee Meetings will take place at Derry City Council Offices. The District Registrar’s Office for Births, Death, Marriages & Civil Partnerships will move to 14 Magazine Street keeping the same contact numbers: 028 71 268439, fax 028 71 377964 and email registrarsoffice@derrycity.gov.uk. Council goes gold for children’s cancer The Derry City Council Civic Offices building on the Strand Road has turned Gold for this month in support of childhood cancer charities and to assist Council employee Emma McLaughlin raise funds ahead of a charity trek in Peru next year. Emma, who works as a website assistant at the Civic Offices, is preparing for a charity trek to the Inca Trail next May where she will endure a gruelling trek in below zero temperatures and high altitude to raise money for the NI Cancer Fund for Children. The Derry girl is hoping that by lighting the Council building gold during the month of December it will help raise awareness of her charity and encourage people to support children’s cancer charities. The Council has supported other cancer charity initiatives in the past by turning the building yellow as part of the Light the UK Yellow campaign in aid of Marie Curie, blue to create awareness of Diabetes and pink back in October of this year, to support breast
cancer awareness. The Mayor, Alderman Maurice Devenney pledging his support said it was important that organisatons such as Council were taking the lead in creating awareness and offering support. He extended his best wishes to Emma as she prepares for the charity trek and encouraged local people to support her as she fundraises across the city. “The Council is pleased to be able to assist Emma in creating awareness of the excellent work being carried out by children’s cancer charities across Northern Ireland. As a parent myself, I can only imagine how devastating it must be to have your child diagnosed with cancer. Thankfully there is support and help out there for families who need it,” he said. Emma said she was delighted to have the Council on board and supporting her fundraising efforts. “It’s great to have the support of my work colleagues as I prepare for my trip to Peru next year. I am preparing for a 14 week intensive training programme in the New Year
that will build up my fitness levels and get my body in tune for the extreme conditions I will be trekking in. The support I have received to date has been great and would appeal to everyone to continue to dig deep over the festive period and
next year to help me raise my target of £4,000.” Derry City Council most certainly looks it weight in Gold in December.
Emma McLaughlin helps put gold plastic covering over the traditional lighting of the Derry City Council Offices. Money raised by her colleagues will help her fundraising effort in Peru next year. The Council Offices will remain bathed in gold for the duration of December.
Public vigilance on theft urged Councillor Thomas Conway, Chairman for the Derry District Policing Partnership has asked members of the public to be vigilant in relation to recent metal thefts and to report any suspicious activity to the police. His comments follow a recent spate of cable and metal thefts in the city and district where thieves have targeted businesses, schools and homes. Commenting on the thefts, Councillor Conway said: “These criminals appear to be quite brazen with a number of thefts taking place during daytime and there is a suspicion that the thieves are posing as legitimate workers. I would urge the public to be vigilante and report any suspicious activity immediately to
the PSNI. I would also appeal local businesses dealing in scrap metal to ensure that they are aware of the source of the metal before purchasing it and to keep a register of all transactions relating to these purchases. These metal thefts are not victimless crimes with schools, businesses and householders having to redirect much needed resources into repairs and replacement.” The recession is believed to have given rise to a growing spate of scrap metal thefts. The scrap metal trade can be lucrative and items are normally sold for cash payment. Councillor Conway appealed for the public to be aware of the money involved.

Spitfire Family return to Derry The family of a former American WWII fighter pilot have made an emotional return to Derry to mark the opening of an exhibition featuring the aircraft he ditched in a Donegal bog in 1941. The two daughters of Roland ‘Bud’ Wolfe and 12 other family members travelled from across America on a personal pilgrimage to visit the former fighter base - now the City of Derry Airport - where their father was temporarily based in 1941. While here, they unveiled a plaque in the terminal to commemorate 133 (Eagle) RAF squadron which was composed entirely of US volunteer pilots, including their father. They also viewed a display case containing the tail wheel and other exhibits from their father’s Spitfire which was excavated this summer from a mountain bog near Gleneely in County Donegal. The licensed excavation of this aircraft, as part of a forthcoming BBC (NI) series entitled ‘Dig WW2’, attracted a lot of media attention. The fascinating history of Flying Officer Wolfe’s subsequent internment in the Curragh and immediate escape and the war time donation of this aircraft to the RAF by British MP and successful Canadian retail mogul Mr Garfield Weston has made headlines around the world. The story went global with the recent firing, by the Irish Defence Force, of one of the Browning machine guns recovered from the crash site. In just 24 hours, over 1,100,000 people read about this historic event on the BBC website. Speaking at the unveiling Bud’s daughters, Barbara Kucharczyk and Betty Wolfe said they were delighted to come to Derry and visit their father’s former RAF fighter base. The Airport management toured the party around the airfield pointing out the former WW2 runways and buildings their father would have seen during his time there in 1941. He parachuted from his stricken aircraft on 30th November 1941 when it developed engine trouble while on a convoy patrol. The family also met and talked with local Eglinton resident Mr Brian McGlinchey, whose brother Nat corresponded with Bud Wolfe for many years after the war. Nat’s support for 133 Eagle squadron saw him accorded honorary membership of the squadron shortly before his death and this lifelong devotion was also remembered on the plaque. The plaque was funded by Mr Galen Weston son of Mr Garfield Weston, who was delighted to hear of the recovery of one of his father’s donated Spitfires. “The 30th November was the 70th anniversary of the crash and it was very poignant for
the family members to visit the remote crash site in Donegal,” said local aviation historian Jonny McNee who traced the daughters earlier in the year to seek their approval for the project. Mr McNee paid tribute to everyone at the Airport who assisted to arrange this day which was clearly an emotional one for the family. “The staff and management have provided a genuine warm welcome to the family of a former flier. The unveiling of the plaque shows their commitment to remember the history and origins of the City of Derry Airport.”

Reason to be cheerful!
A nation on its economic kneecaps rose to its feet and jumped high into the air as the Republic of Ireland football team qualified for its first major international tournament in 10 whole years. Sadly, for some, the only ambition is to burn things. Take the burning of the poppy wreaths, grabbed from the War Memorial and ceremonially torched at Free Derry Wall by members of the local intelligentsia. What is really going through their minds? These are guys who couldn’t tell you one jot about their own history, never mind provide any cogent argument that would attempt to explain their actions. It’s not the actions of dispossessed youth either – it’s the actions of ill brought up thugs who can see nothing important other than wrack and ruin. It is hoped that the initiative will help further develop the city’s reputation as a hub for musical creativity. The Children’s Music Promise will be the largest project rolled out during 2013 and will include the chance for children to showcase their work. Garbhan Downey, director of marketing and communications, said the project had already attracted international attention. He said: “We are already getting a lot of interest as a model of excellence on how to teach children music and it is being looked at by everybody. “It could change the way music is taught in the curriculum.” Now maybe we will have a whole new crop of Dana’s, Undertones, Nadine’s, Joe Lockes, Peter Cunnah’s – the list goes on.

Newly installed and diminutive Irish President made the city his first port of call in the North of Ireland. Michael D Higgin’s visit a few weeks back came hot on the heels of a special visit by his predecessor Mary McAleese – so Derry has been spoiled of late as far as presidential visits are concerned. He was in the city to attend the All-island School Choir of the Year awards at the City’s Millennium Forum. “I am delighted to join you here tonight and to have had the privilege of enjoying such beautiful choral performances. Hans Christian Anderson said that where words fail, music speaks,” Mr Higgins said. The president paid tribute to all the 46 choirs who entered the annual contest run by charity Co-operation Ireland and RTE. “It has been inspiring to witness the final performances but every participating choir in this competition has shown the wonderful talent and teamwork that enabled each and every one of them to represent their school to the very, very best of their ability. “Surely a people that can sing together in harmony is a wonderful and great omen for the future,” he said.

Derry’s big screen switch on Derry is now well and truly ‘Switched On’ with the Stormont Culture Minister, Carál Ní Chuilín officially launching the Derry Live ‘Big Screen’ site. In good time for both the London Olympics and the Derry City of Culture 2013 celebrations, it is situated in Waterloo place in Londonderry and it is designed to animate this area and to contribute to a shared sense of space. Speaking as it was switched on, the NI Executive Minister said: “This is the second live site and will allow us to come together in celebration to enjoy cultural and sporting events. “I am sure that this live site will have as much success as the Belfast Live Site and bring people together to enjoy events via the big screen,” she said. “When the [Olympic] Games begin next July, this site will provide the opportunity for all to watch and support our local sporting stars as they compete in the London 2012 Games,” the Sinn Fein Minister added. She also underlined her support for the partnership between Derry City Council, the BBC and local cultural organisations that have all worked together to regenerate the city centre. “It supports much of the work undertaken by the Council, by ILEX and DSD and by the Tourist Board which aims to create attractive places where people want to be,” she contin-
ued. “I would also like to acknowledge CultureNI, particularly the 30 trainees in the Creative Industries, who have helped to develop content for the site which tells the stories of some of our sporting heroes and showcases some of the world class cultural projects taking place here to celebrate the London 2012 Games.”

Armed robbery
Three men armed with a knife, a hammer and a gun have robbed a store in the city, police have said. The incident took place at the shop in the Great James Street area of the city at 8:45pm on Tuesday. The thieves, who had partially-covered faces, made off with a sum of cash and a mobile phone following the robbery. A store worker was left badly shaken by the ordeal, but was physically uninjured.

When Santa came to town
Derry gets into the festive spirit like nowhere else! Children and adults alike crowded into Guildhall Square for the City’s Christmas light switch on 2011. Thousands flooded into the square as the one and only Fr Christmas descended from above on a fireman’s ladder. The main man himself was ably helped by Shrek and stars from the Panto “Cinderella”. The Switch On, which is one of the highlights of the city’s events calendar, is a hugely successful occasion attracting thousands of families keen to get into the Christmas period and enjoy some festive time in the city. The celebrations featured musical entertainment from the Chevys while BBC’s Mark Patterson hosted the evening. Mayor Alderman Maurice Devenney, said it was a huge family occasion for everyone. “The Big Switch On is a fantastic event. It’s a great opportunity for families to come into the city centre, meet Santa and soak up the great festive atmosphere and have some fun. As Mayor of the city it provides me with a unique opportunity to engage with the public and welcome the season of goodwill to the city.” Event organizer with Derry City Council, Gerry McColgan said the event was one of the highlights of the city’s social calendar and a great family friendly occasion. “Every year the Switch On attracts huge crowds and it’s a really great event. The Guildhall Square comes alive with festive cheer and when Santa arrives the atmosphere is amazing. We have a full line up of musical entertainment organised for the evening for all the family. The Switch On marks the start of a range of festive events for visitors and residents in the city in the run up to Christmas,” he said. Each year the event attracts several thousand children and their parents to Guildhall Square.
The man himself makes his dramatic entrance to Guildhall Square while the fun and frolics continued with the ugly sisters and one rather scared looking Prince Charming.

City set for Carol Festival at St Columb’s This year’s Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at St Columb’s Cathedral will take place on Sunday December 18 with all proceeds going to the Mayor’s chosen charities, the Foyle Branch of the MS Society and Parkinson’s UK. The service is usually held on the Sunday before Christmas and is a tradition which began in England stretching back over 100 years. The Nine Lessons trace the history of salvation from the Creation of the world throughout the Old Testament to the Incarnation itself and culminates in the Christmas Gospel of St John Chapter 1. The Very Rev Dr William Morton, Dean of Derry is encouraging people from across the city to join the celebration: “The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a very traditional part of Christmas in the Anglican Church. You might be more familiar with the service than you realise as it’s the same format as BBC2’s Kings College Cambridge service which is broadcast every Christmas Eve. The carols may vary but are chosen to link with readings and we are very fortunate to have the Cathedral’s choir of Boys and Gentlemen rendering several choral items.. It is a very special celebration and we really hope that people from across the city will join us in celebration” Those attending the service in St Columb’s Cathedral will be treated to classics such as internationally renowned “Once in Royal David’s City”. The hymn has special connections to the cathedral and the city as it was written by Cecil Frances Alexander who married William Alexander who was to become Bishop of Derry and Raphoe from 1867-1896. They lived in the Bishops Palace opposite the Courthouse and she penned many classic verses including “All Things Bright and Beautiful” and “There is a Green Hill far Away”. She wrote the poem, which was later set to music, as a way to help teach her godchildren the Christian faith. We have several factors to thank for her poems
becoming internationally recognised and celebrated as hymns. Cecil Frances moved in quite literary circles and her involvement with the Oxford Movement at a time of great change in the accessibility of print meant that her writing was published. The mid eighteen hundreds was also a time of prolific hymn writing and all these factors combined lead to her words becoming legendary down through history and across the world. St Columb’s Cathedral is understandably proud of Cecil Frances Alexander and her connection to the City, an original copy of her book of “Hymns for Little Children” published in 1848 is housed in the Cathedral. Mayor Alderman Maurice Devenney says: “It is magnificent to hear Cecil Frances Alexander’s words ring out in the Cathedral, it makes the Nine Lessons & Carols service even more special. It is a wonderful service, capturing the spirit of the Christmas season and bringing people from throughout the city together. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Dean Morton, Cathedral Staff and Choirs for their work throughout the year and in particular for arranging this wonderful service and supporting the hard work and dedication of the Foyle Branch of the MS Society and Parkinson’s UK.” The Nine Lessons and Carols service begins at 7.30pm on Sunday 18th December and is a free event, however donations are most welcome and all proceeds will go directly to the Mayor’s Charities. A preview of the Cathedral Choir can be heard on www.stcolumbscathedralchoir.com; a copy of their CD “All Things Bright & Beautiful – The Hymns of Cecil Frances Alexander”, would make a wonderful Christmas gift and is available at the Cathedral. NI minister wants 1,000 new Irish language speakers by 2015
Cool Fuel
With Sam Conley
Unfortunately when it comes to weight loss there really is no quick fix. The miracle shakes and wonder pills do not provide the sustainable weight loss so many crave - likewise, the fad diets serve no purpose save to LOWER our metabolic rate even further which is entirely counter-productive. So what is the answer? The problem is further complicated because “onesize” does not fit all - we each have different requirements, problems and needs to be addressed. This is where many of the “commercial” diets fail to meet the needs of individuals in terms of achieving a sustainable weight loss. So, a tailor-made nutrition plan which takes into account your own daily routine, likes and dislikes, allergies and intolerances, exercise and training needs makes perfect sense. A large proportion of my clients simply are
The North’s Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín was in Derry for the North West launch of the Líofa project, which it’s intended will create over 1,000 new Irish language speakers within the four years.Ms Ní Chuilín says her aim is that at least 1,000 people, including herself, should have gained the Fainne by 2015.Speaking ahead of her visit this evening, the minister says she’s expecting considerable success in Derry, particularly with the Donegal Gaeltacht next door.Ms Ni Chuilín says there’s been significant interest already. not eating enough, meal-skipping in an attempt to shed weight which I know from experience simply does not work – the opposite in fact as the body actually stores fat to protect itself against a period of starvation. Dehydration is another massive problem – most people think that they do consume enough water each day – FACT the majority do not! Water is the catalyst for so many reactions within the body and effective weight loss / management will not be possible without it. Drinking cold water itself actually raises our metabolic rate – and it’s free! When a client sees what they eat each day written down in a food diary many are shocked – we have become so reliant on processed, refined and convenience food in our daily diets that the obesity problem is rapidly growing out of control. When I go on to explain how nutritionally inadequate these diets are the true reality hits home! As the old saying goes “you are what you eat” – most of us simply need some re-education and guidance. Book an initial consultation today – it could be an hour that changes the rest of your life ! Statistics for the Before and After pictures which I have sent a short time ago. Cormac and I were colleagues in Brendan Kearney’s office a number of years ago. He left in 2001 to establish his own practice McKeone and Co and asked me to join him a few months ago. I had always wondered what it would be like to run my own practice and decided to rise to the challenge. EXPERT WARNS ARCTIC WINTERS ON THE WAY A polar bear on the banks of The Foyle may seem far fetched but Derry is being warned to brace itself for another tough winter. James Madden, long range forecaster for Exacta Weather says the city should prepare itself for a winter similar to the that of the past 2 years because of changes to a number of key variables that dictate our weather. He says this winter is likely to rival perhaps surpass, the winter of 2010/11 when temperatures reached a 30 year low and ice formed on the Foyle.
“I expect the 2011-2012 winter to follow a similar pattern in terms of how November and December was in 2010 for the vast majority of this winter” he say’s. “it will be exceptionally cold and snowy with well below average temperatures.” Mr Madden says a number of factors including low solar activity, alterations to the Gulf Stream and the influence of La Nina (the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean near the equator) and the impact of volcanic ash are coming together and culminating in a harsh winter prediction. He says its vital people start preparing now to minimise high energy bills.

A model example It was in 2008 that then 16-year-old St Mary’s College student Kayleigh O’Reilly first hit the headlines locally. Back then she beat off thousands of hopefuls to become one of six finalists in the 2008 Sugar/Rimmel London Model Competition - an annual event, which scours the UK to find the teen face of ‘Sugar’ magazine. Kayleigh didn’t win, but she impressed, really impressed. Judges Annabel Brog, Editor of Sugar, and Ellis, director of modelling agency, Independent, said they chose Kayleigh for her striking natural good looks. Ellis said: “Kayleigh is a true Irish beauty with her fair freckled skin, auburn hair and well proportioned features. Kayleigh is a pretty girl and has a keen hunger for the fashion business. The mental attitude of a model is as important as the physical attributes - they go hand in hand to make a successful model.” Kayleigh’s journey in the fashion industry had begun in earnest and there were even greater things to come for the Creggan beauty. The name Kayleigh O’Reilly was set to go international with her participation in the 2009 Miss Earth contest in the Phillipines. She made it into the last 16 – a first for a UK model. With a down-to-earth attitude and a natural charm, Kayleigh has never looked back.

When did you first realise that the modelling industry could provide you with a career? I first realised this when I used to watch my bigger cousin do the bridal shows, then my chance came when I was spotted in Manchester by a model scout and was then entered into the Sugar Rimmel London search for a model competition and made it to the final 6 from 11,000 girls.

I would collect my portfolio and cards and then make my way around Dublin with a map on foot to go to the castings I have for that day. I wear skinny jeans and a white vest top, fresh hair and make up. You go in and they ask you to catwalk maybe a few poses and they usually take pictures then get back to your agent if you are successful. If so you go to your location get hair and make up and do what you are there for whether it’s catwalk or a shoot or even video shoot. You are simply a mannequin and you do your job and then leave with new photos and most of the times new friends and new memories.
When you were a child what did you dream of being? When I was a child I always dreamt of being an actress or a model. My mum would still say to this day that I would strut my stuff when I was younger around the living room in her heels and dresses. When did you first get on a catwalk and how did you feel? My very first catwalk was seven years ago when I was 13 years old in the City Hotel and I will never forget how nervous I was. Why do you think that modelling has taken off locally? I believe the modelling took off locally because their was a good market for it in Derry City and then I went on to Belfast and started doing Belfast fashion week and things seemed to have been getting better as I went along. Who has been your biggest influence to date? It would definitely have to be my mummy. She has been the one that has completely supported me and gave me every opportunity and just been my backbone throughout. She never once pressured me, she just constantly believed in me and made me feel like I was worth it and I could accomplish my dreams. How would you sum up the industry? The modelling industry in one word to me would have to be “Bold”. It’s straight forward, cut throat and very competitive. It’s as if you are in the fast lane on the motorway there is no way you can go but forward if you are determined. But besides making it sound awful there are good points. It makes you grow individually as a person in confidence and goals. You realise the more you go at
Could you tell us about your success at Miss Earth? Miss Earth is definitely one of my most treasured memories. I still to this day have to take a few seconds and pinch myself when I remember some of the days and things I have experienced. It was definitely hard work - it was constant, no sleep, no play time – it’s work, work, and work. People think that being a beauty queen must be the easiest job smiling and posing. But there is so much that’s unseen. When I was there, I travelled to at least 20 different countries and many more individual towns. So you can imagine we were constantly on the go with barely any sleep. But the sights and people we then met and seeing how we made their days made it so worth while. While I was away I was nothing other than myself - I was fun upbeat and just so thankful for the experience I was given, so I made the most of it and made so many friends and I believe that’s why I did have a good success in the pageant. Coming 7th is the best that England, Scotland, Ireland or Wales has ever done in the lifetime of Miss Earth. I was completely overwhelmed and I am still thankful.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced in the modelling business? My biggest challenge to date would have to be working with Compton. Because my mum and dad have jobs, I
Quick fire questions: Favourite TV programme? The secret Circle – It’s new about witches and its exciting stuff! Sneaky food treat? Doritos and Chilli dip. Favourite book? Angels in my hair Favourite place to visit? The West coast of Ireland Favourite way to relax? In a nice hot bubble bath with candles.
LIFE & STYLE have had to hike down there myself and just run about and find everywhere I needed to go myself and learning that I can do things independently. It was very intimidating at the start but once you get the hang of it and have the determination, I believe you just do it. The Top Model competition is the biggest of its kind in the North West. What advice would you give models thinking of entering? The advice I give to myself and would give to the girls is simply ‘believe in yourself’. If you say you can’t do it then you won’t. Be open-minded, go for it and give it your all. They do say that we have the most beautiful women in the world and I believe it and I think if you are thinking about it, why not give it a go? The worst thing that could happen is you having an experience at it, and that’s not even bad. So go for it! In your view what are the most important characteristics to make a success of modelling? You would have to be hard working, thick-skinned, determined and up for new experiences and new places. What is your favourite label and what is the most expensive piece of fashion you own? My favourite label to look at would have to be Cavallie – I’m saying look at because I could ever afford it but maybe one day! To be totally honest I don’t have anything expensive, I’m not a rich girl. I’m a high street type of girl, but I definitely love making my own outfits and just replica everything that’s on the catwalks from local stores and even some charity shops. What are your hopes for the future? My hopes for the future would be to keep going on with my love for modelling and maybe compete in Miss World or Miss Universe and help make a wee difference and do my City proud!
Top Tips for aspiring models • Be Confident! • Have a fresh face and hair - Less is better! • Practice makes perfect- In front of your mirror and cat walking in heels in your hallway, all pays off. • Watch T.V programmes eg: “Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model” or online photos and copy and give a go at everything they are doing. Try everything and anything. If it’s what you really want go for it! You have to be thick skinned and don’t take knocks personally - they just weren’t meant for you.

Finding the right skirt for you... There are a whole lot of different skirt lengths out there, which can make the whole process of finding one rather trying. Not only that, but skirts are made out of different materials, have different cuts, and different embellishments that makes buying process even more confusing. How do you know which ones will look good on you? Finding the Right Length The first thing that you should focus on when you go skirt shopping is the length of the skirt. A good general rule to keep in mind is that if you are over the age of 35 (or younger, in some cases), a mini skirt is no longer a fashionable option for you. The shorter the skirt does not mean the sexier the skirt; you can find a sexy skirt at a more suitable length, such as a well cut knee length skirt that hugs your hips and comes to a nice taper right above your knees. TOP TIP: The more basic the skirt, the better, especially the older you are. Stay away from any sort of low waist skirts, ruffles and pleats. These will only make you seem immature and will ruin any classic or modern look you were going for. Skirt Cuts and Fabrics The most flattering cut of skirt for any body type is the good old a-line skirt. The a-line works for almost anyone as it will help define the waist area, hide any trace of a tummy, conceal the hips and thighs you may want to hide, and it will balance almost any body shape. Try to stay away from any sort of sarong style skirts as they can make your tummy look more pooch-like than it is, and definitely keep your hands off any mini or micro-mini skirts if they are no longer age appropriate or flattering to your body type. Choose the Right Size There are some skirts out there that are made to cling and hug to every part of your body, but these skirts will probably not be the most flattering to you. You want to wear a skirt that will not bunch as you sit, stand and move throughout your day. You also don’t want a skirt that will become tight and confining. Find the right size skirt that will nicely hug you around the hip area but will allow you the freedom of movement. Can I Wear a Denim Skirt? Who doesn’t love a great pair of jeans? While some may argue that denim skirts are no longer fashionable, we tend to disagree! A dark wash of denim can easily become sophisticated and sexy if paired up with a pair of heels and a button down jacket. Throw on a scarf, and you definitely have the business casual look going on. You can wear denim skirts out to diner, on a date, or you can choose a lighter wash of denim and pair it with a trendy t-shirt or a sweater and boots for a more laid back look.

The hottest trends in denim It doesn’t matter who you are, how old you are, what gender or what race you may be: we all love our jeans. Jeans are undoubtedly the most popular article of clothing on the planet, and for a good reason. Jeans can be worn with almost anything, can suit almost any occasion, and once you find that right pair for your body they quickly become your very best friend. Most of us wear out our jeans until they have holes, and even then we have a hard time letting go! If you want to be right in with the jean trend this year, here are some of the types of jeans you absolutely must get your hands on: The Boot Cut The boot cut is a classic, but it is absolutely essential for everyone to have a pair. The boot cut jean can be casual, and the boot cut jean can be elegant. Boot cut jeans have evolved over time from a jean that had a very excessive flair to one these days that have less of a flair and more of a slight bell bottom shape. Above the knee the boot cut jean is tight to your legs and your buttocks, giving your lower body great shape. Given that it is such a versatile jean, a dark denim boot cut jean is definitely a “must have” for your wardrobe. Vintage Jeans
Everything vintage is making a big comeback this season. Vintage jeans, when paired up with a great pair of vintage-inspired boots, will make a big fashion statement that everyone will absolutely love. Embellished Jeans Any jeans that have any sort of unique embellishments are definitely “in” this season. The extra embellishments add that extra “wow” factor to any outfit that you may wear. Just be careful to follow the cleaning directions for the jeans so that none of the embellishments accidentally come off in the wash! Ripped Jeans Jeans that already come with rips, tears and hole are a bit hit this season among men and women. This type of jean is particularly appealing for women as it gives the public little “peek-a-boo” holes to what is beneath those funky jeans. TOP TIP: Experiment with a worn out pair of jeans you have at home and create your own ripped denim look! You can use scissors and an Exacto knife to create this look, though be careful and take care to not cut yourself! Dyed Jeans Another big trend this year are dyed jeans, or jeans that have a wash to them. Acid wash

jeans are definitely in again. The acid wash gives your jeans those white highlights, which adds interest and diversity to any pair of jeans you may wear. These jeans are great in that they also look brand new, no matter how many times they have been through the wash.
Some dyed jeans are also dyed with a yellow “khaki” color to help give a new pair of jeans that old, vintage appearance. Stone washing, also known as sand washing, is also still very popular. This type of wash gives jeans a light color on the thighs and buttocks.

Flatter that figure! Girl’s Aloud stars have dismissed rumours that the band is to reform next year without Derry songstress Nadine Coyle. The long-awaited Girls Aloud reunion looks to be on after band member Nicola tweeted a picture of herself with Cheryl Cole, Sarah Harding and Kimberley Walsh in front of a mirror, with the caption: ‘Girls night in.. x.’ Cole later re-tweeted the snap and wrote: ‘Love my girlies.’ The girls’ reunion has been pencilled in for next year, which marks their ten-year anniversary, Nicola told Star magazine that while she is enjoying life as a solo artist, Girls Aloud will reform and they are not ignoring Irish bandmate Nadine. “All the stuff about us not speaking to Nadine is b*******” she said. Nicola’s comments come after
Kimberley said the girls were gearing up for a return in 2012. She said: “We definitely do want to do something. We will definitely re-group. “I don’t think that will be the end, though. I don’t think we will ever break-up. Girls last forever.” Nadine has always played down rumours of a rift between herself and the rest of the girls and confirmed to internet radio show host Dean Kelly last week that she is still in contact with the band. She said: “We always discuss doing a ten-year reunion thing. So that’s going to be next year.” “We’re definitely going to do something. But it’s a whole huge production. Girls Aloud is not just us five, there’s like us five plus a ridiculous team of 50 who travel with us, it’s amazing.” Nadine is currently living in New York where she bases her solo career.

A man has died following a Customs and Excise raid in Derry, police have said. Officers from HM Revenue and Customs, along with the PSNI, carried out a search at a business premises in the Waterside area and seized cigarettes, 3kg of tobacco and a vehicle. Shortly after the raid, the PSNI
We can’t all be blessed with a perfect figure. However, we can wear clothes that emphasize our good points and disguise our so called bad points. Two woman with identical bodies can look dramatically different in both size and shape simply because of the clothes they’re wearing. But how can you make the most of your body? Check out these rules to make your figure look fabulous... 1. Use light and dark colours to make your body appear more in proportion. For example a woman with big hips and a small bust should wear slimming dark trousers or skirt and size creating light colours up top. This two pronged attack can make a huge difference to how you body looks. 2. Use horizontal and vertical stripes to widen and lengthen. For example if you’re overweight, never wear clothes with stripes going across. This will make you seem even bigger than you are. Instead try to wear clothes with stripes going down. This will make you seem taller and as a result less dumpy. 3. Use bright colours or patterns to draw attention away from problem areas. For example if you have a bum the size of a small country, wear a colourful or patterned top. This will help keep eyes away from your oversized natural cushion. 4. Stay away from tapered legged trousers. Unless you have great thighs and buttocks, trousers that come in at the bottom will make you seem much fatter than you are. Trousers which are wide at the bottom will make your legs seem thinner and longer, hence the popularity of flared bottomed jeans. 6. Use scarves and pashmenas to hide, cover and emphasize. For example a scarf around you neck will draw attention to your upper body. wereThis called toideal a sudden death can be if you’re particularly heavy lower down. at the shop on the Strabane Old 7. A group of traders have come together to promote and support each other and celebrate their individuality, creative and entrepreneurial flair. The group launched their initiative on December 1, by welcoming the Christmas season and offering a unique retail experience in the Cathedral Quarter on Pump Street, Derry. Among the creative traders is Minette Shoes, the brainchild of renowned designer Anita Flavin. Anita is available to talk at seminars, workshops, colleges, lunches or any other events to share her unlimited knowledge of business, fashion experiences and all round advice of the last twenty years. For further information please email: missminette@hotmail.com. Anita’s first taste of celebrity life style was living in Hollywood despite working behind the cameras, this did not stop Anita being at the forefront of major movie productions at that time including Jurassic Park, True Lies, Bat Man and Blown Away amongst others. After settling in Aspen, Colorado, Pump Street is commonly known amongst locals as Pamper Street so no better place to promote and celebrate women and fashion. The traders are linking in with Derry City Council City of Culture, and filmed the event and using the footage to promote up-coming initiatives within the city in the build up to the up-coming celebrations. The man in the big red suit was in attendance, adding a bit of colour to the initiative. Among the businesses involved are Syenna, Gordon Gallery and the Bedlam Weekend Market. But there’s much more dotted around the Cathedral Quarter, so get up there and explore in the run up to Christmas.

Depression Depression is one of the most common mood disorders affecting roughly 20% of the population at some point during their lives. The many different types of depression include: major depression, dysthymia, and bipolar disorder. Contrary to what many believe, people living with depression cannot simply “snap out of it” and recover. Without the proper treatment, symptoms can persist for months, even years. Symptoms of depression include: • Depressed mood • Weight loss or gain • Loss of all interest and pleasure • Fatigue • Sleep disturbances • Activity disturbances - agitation or slowing • Irritability • Guilt • Poor concentration or indecisiveness • Abnormal thoughts of death or suicide
It is important to note that in order for a person to be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms can not be the result of another physical or mood condition, or due to medication, alcohol, street drugs, or normal bereavement. The symptoms must also persist for at least two weeks.
Causes of Depression It is well-known that when someone is experiencing depression, there are chemical imbalances in the brain at work. Irregular levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin, for example, are believed to be involved in bipolar disorders. There are a number of reasons why someone might develop depression, or the chemical changes that lead to depression. Factors such as heredity, stress, low self-esteem, medical illnesses and hormonal changes can each lead to, or aggravate, a depressive illness. Situational factors like serious loss or financial difficulties can also trigger depressive episodes. It is most likely, however, that genetic, psychological and environmental factors combine to produce depression.
Anxiety Another common mood disorder is anxiety. Everybody understands what it is like to feel anxious. Preparing for a job interview, meeting new people and speaking in public are just a few events that might lead someone to experience “butterflies” in the stomach. Anxiety can be a positive reaction and help prepare individuals for situations that are uncertain.
But there are many instances when anxiety is not warranted and this normally positive emotion interferes with daily activities. Millions of people across North America suffer from anxiety disorders such as panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessivecompulsive disorder, phobias and generalized anxiety disorder. Some of the symptoms of anxiety include: • • • •

Approach Many patients are suffering from a combination of anxiety and depression. This condition can be considered to be related to disruption of circadian rhythm, the cyclic variation of physiological rhythm occurring in an approximately 24 hour period. In a healthy ideal state, our bodies are dominated by the sympathetic branch (responsible for activity and alertness etc.) of autonomic nervous system in the day and dominated by the parasympathetic branch (responsible for internal organic function and rest) in the night. In some people, this normal day/ night rhythmic alteration of the autonomic nervous system is disrupted. They are tired, depressed, and have difficulty focusing in the daytime due to a lack of sympathetic activation upon waking. On the other hand, in the night time, they feel anxious, alert, and energized due to the failure of their sympathetic system to shut down and a lack of parasympathetic activation.

RECIPE
Hearty fish pie
Fish pie is usually popular with children, who may not otherwise be keen on fish. In this version, leek and watercress are added to boost the vitamin value . Ready in 1 hour 10 mins
Ingredients Serves: 6 750ml (1¼ pints) plus 3 tbsp semi-skimmed milk 500g (1 lb 2 oz) smoked haddock fillets 1 bay leaf 1 large leek, halved lengthways and sliced 550g (1¼ lb) potatoes, peeled and cut into .5cm (¼ in) thick slices 3 tbsp cornflour 85g (3 oz) watercress, thick stalks removed 50g (1 3/4 oz) mature Cheddar cheese, coarsely grated salt and pepper chopped parsley to garnish
Preparation method Prep: 40 mins | Cook: 30 mins 1. Pour the 750 ml (1¼ pints) milk into a wide frying pan. Add the haddock and bay leaf. Bring to a gentle simmer, then cover and cook for about 5 minutes or until the haddock is just cooked. 2. Lift out the fish with a draining spoon and leave to cool slightly, then peel off the skin and break the flesh into large flakes. Set aside. Strain the milk and reserve 600 ml (1 pint), as well as the bay leaf. 3. Put the leek in the frying pan and add the reserved milk and bay leaf. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until the leek is tender. 4. Meanwhile, cook the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling water for about 8 minutes or until they are just tender but not breaking up. Drain. Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F, gas mark 5). 5. Remove the bay leaf from the leeks and discard. Mix the cornflour with the remaining 3 tbsp cold milk to make a smooth paste. Add to the leek mixture and cook gently, stirring, until slightly thickened. 6. Take the pan from the heat and stir in the watercress, which will wilt. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the flaked haddock, folding it in gently. Transfer the mixture to a 2 litre (3½ pint) pie dish. 7. Arrange the potato slices on top of the fish mixture, overlapping them slightly. Sprinkle with the cheese, and season to taste. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until the fish filling is bubbling and the potatoes are turning golden. 8. Sprinkle the top of the pie with parsley and allow to stand for about 5 minutes before serving.
Rosemary and lamb roasties Potatoes are roasted until crispy and brown with real meat flavour. These roasties are to be made with the fat and juices that come from roasting a joint . Ready in 1 hour Ingredients Serves: 4 4 large potatoes, peeled and quartered 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary Salt to taste Cooled dripping from a joint of roast lamb Preparation method Prep: 15 mins | Cook: 45 mins 1. Preheat oven to 220 C / Gas mark 7. 2. Place the potatoes in a large pot on the hob and fill with enough water to cover. Bring to the boil and cook for about 10 minutes, just cooking partially. 3. Place the potatoes into a large plastic tub with a lid and pour in the lamb dripping. Season with rosemary and salt. Close the lid and shake to coat the potatoes. Pour them out onto a roasting tin. 4. Roast for 45 minutes in the preheated oven, or until dark brown and crispy.
FOOD & DRINK
You may well know what you’re going to drink with the turkey by now but here are some ideas for what to match with your Christmas starters, paired with recipes from some of Britain’s favourite chefs and cookery writers.
and seafood can be a tricky one for wine. My solution - always good with crab would be a dry or off-dry German riesling.
Hazelnut butter-grilled scallops with salad Scallops have a sweet, nutty flavour of their own so I love James Martin’s idea of accentuating that with hazelnut butter, a combination that would be fabulous with an two to four year old Chassagne Montrachet or other good white burgundy or subtly oaked chardonnay
Beef Carpaccio salad Sometimes you really fancy a change from the usual Christmas repertoire and Arthur Potts Dawson, chef at Acorn, has the perfect solution - a fresh-tasting carpaccio of beef salad. Raw beef is surprisingly good with champagne or similar sparkling wines so that would be my preferred pairing.
Rabbit and rosemary terrine with chutney If I have time this Christmas I’ll definitely make this delicious-sounding terrine from French charcutier Stephane Reynaud though I’ll probably serve a bought in - and slightly more wine-friendly - chutney. The suggested pairing is Gewurztraminer but I love good Beaujolais with charcuterie like this. A Morgon would be perfect.
Oysters A French classic for Christmas and the Reveillon (New Year) feast. You can’t go wrong with a young Chablis though Muscadet and Picpoul de Pinet would be thrifty credit crunch alternatives.
Chestnut and sweet onion soup with trompette mushrooms There are some powerful ingredients in Roasted pumpkin and thyme soup with this rich soup which comes from Anthony gruyere Demetre’s new book, Today’s Special Butternut squash is generally a good match garlic, rosemary, chestnuts and trompette for oak-aged chardonnay and this delectable mushrooms but the key so far as the pairing soup from Rick Stein should be no excepis concerned is the substantial amount of tion. With the added cream and gruyere madeira that’s been added which would I’d make it a more classic European style overwhelm any accompanying white wine. Chardonnay rather than an exuberantly I’d drink a dry madeira or (slightly easier fruity one. to obtain) a nutty sherry like a palo cortado with it too A salad of pear, Stilton and pomegranate This delicious-sounding recipe from Nigel Chevre and quince paste crostini Slater is exactly the sort of fresh-tasting You could pair goats’ cheese’s classic starter I feel like over the Christmas period. partner Sauvignon Blanc with this unusual Despite the blue cheese I wouldn’t be going starter from chef James Martin but given for a sweet wine. A glass of rosé champagne the quince paste I think I’d go for a less or sparkling wine would be lovely and pick aromatic white such as an Albarino or an up on the pomegranate. Italian Vermentino
Crab, avocado and grapefruit cocktail A fresh tasting starter from Gary Rhodes that would be a great way to kick off the Christmas meal. The combination of fruit
Smoked salmon A slightly less successful match with champagne than people think, particularly if the smoke is strong. Try a crisp dry German riesling or an Australian Verdelho for a change.
Burgundy brilliance Winemaking in France dates back to pre-Roman times, also it was the romans who disiminated the culture of the wine and the practice of winemaking throughout the country. Wine is the product of the juice of fresly picked grapes, after natural or cultured yeasts have converted the grape sugars into alcohol during the fermentation process. The yeasts, or less, are normally filtered out before bottling. The range, quality and reputation of the fine wines of Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhône, and Champagne in particular have made them rôle models the world over.France’s everyday wines can be highly enjoyable too, with plenty of good value wines now emerging from the southern regions. Each of ten principal wine producing regions has its own identity, based on grape varieties and terroir. Appelation contrôlée laws guarantee a wine’s origins and style. Burgundy wine (French: Bourgogne or Vin de Bourgogne) is wine made in the Burgundy region in eastern France,[1] in the valleys and slopes west of the Saône River, a tributary of the Rhône. The most famous wines produced here - those commonly referred to as “Burgundies” - are red wines made from Pinot Noir grapes or white wines made fromChardonnay grapes. Red and white wines are also made from other grape varieties, such as Gamay and Aligotérespectively. Small amounts of rosé and sparkling wine are also produced in the region. Chardonnay-dominated Chablisand Gamay-dominated Beaujolais are formally part of the Burgundy wine region, but wines from those subregions are usually referred to by their own names rather than as “Burgundy wines”. Burgundy has a higher number of appellations d’origine contrôlée (AOCs) than any other French region, and is often seen as the most terroir-conscious of the French wine regions. Food pairing Pinot Noir can be among the most amazing wines you’ll ever taste, and it can be flat-out anticlimactic. It inspires more rhapsodies—and disappointments— among wine lovers than any other grape. When it’s good, it’s ethereally aromatic, with flavors ranging from ripe red berries to sweet black cherries, and tannins that are firm but never obtrusive. (When bad, unfortunately, it’s acidic, raspy and bland.) The greatest Pinot Noirs come from France’s Burgundy region, age-worthy wines that are usually quite expensive. More affordable and typically more fruit-forward Pinots can be found from California and Oregon as well as New Zealand, Chile and Australia. Pinot Noir pairs well with a wide range of foods— fruitier versions make a great match with salmon or other fatty fish, roasted chicken.

There were times I was watching and actually forgot this was done before. Aided by X-Men producer, Brett Ratner, Bousman creates a coherent story compounded with the themes of guilt, love and betrayal. For once in his blood-drenched career, he doesn’t focus on shaping the story with intestines and brains which made Saws 2, 3 and 4 suffer. Successful realism is even created in one situation where you have a blind, deaf guy desperately trying to make it upstairs. Shaky hand-held camera and irritating, deafening noises put you in the film the emotion director should be dissecting from their audience. Nigel enjoying hiswhich 50th is Birthday withevery his wife Margerat But, and yes sadly, there’s always some form of fault which makes the film drift away into forgotten territory. You may have noticed the lack of depth in the plot and how does Bousman redeem himself? He seems to fill the 90 minute timeslot with stupid sub-plots and pointless, irrelevant scenes which make you physically sick. Instead of generating heart-pounding drama, he reverts back to his sadistic film-making ways and surprisingly turns the film into another Saw. This is evident in mother turning her victims against each other, with friendship being thrown out the window. A fight for survival ensues and we feel as if we’ve seen this before. Oh yeah we have, in every Saw film. From this point forward, every drama-filled situation feels like a bloody Saw trap. What is with film-makers these days? Any Good? A real possibility at the start, tumbling severely downhill in the middle and an average but predictable ending, this remake does itself adequate justice. Patrick Flueger’s portrayal of the demented villain, Ike saves the film from complete damnation. It’s heartbreaking that he signed on for the foot-breaking Footloose remake because his role here reminds me of a young Ray Liotta. God, did I just mention another remake? I give up. Rating: 5/10

Honda set to unveil unmatched economy
Toyota in winter tyre move Japanese car giant Toyota is the latest manufacturer to launch its own winter tyre programme in the UK. Winter tyres operate safely in temperatures below seven degrees Celsius, and on roads which are cold and wet or covered in ice and snow. Toyota dealerships in the UK will now sell and install winter tyres for models across virtually its entire range, as well as most models from its luxury brand, Lexus. Some older models from Toyota are also eligible for the winter tyres including the previous generation Yaris supermini and Prius hybrid. Local Toyota dealerships can also arrange to store the standard tyres that are being replaced at their centres until they are ready to be refitted when temperatures improve. Toyota dealerships will also offer customers a detailed ‘winter check’ for £9.95. As part of the package, qualified technicians will run 37 visual checks as well as more detailed inspections on the car’s battery, coolant and brake fluids. These components can be replaced if the technicians suggest it’s necessary, although this will come at an additional cost, depending on the model being serviced. All of this, Toyota says, will help prepare the customer’s cars for the toughest weather conditions which can occur through the winter months.
Page 71 Honda predicts its upcoming 2012 Civic hatchback will have the cheapest running costs in the compact C-segment when the car hits UK dealerships next year. This is based on announcements this week showing the Civic’s high residual values and an improved insurance group rating compared to previous generation models. The new Honda Civic, first revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in September, will have a starting price of £16,495 for the entry level SE model. The engine range includes a 1.4 litre i-VTEC petrol engine with 99bhp, plus a 1.8 litre version with 140bhp. The car will also be sold with a 2.2 litre i-DTEC diesel with 148bhp, while the petrol units come with manual transmission only, the diesel option can be equipped with an automatic for an extra £1,385. A report by the car residual value provider CAP has estimated the new Honda Civic residual values are based on a three year/60,000 mile profile. It indicates that with either the 2.2 litre diesel or the 1.4 litre petrol it will achieve a trade value of 38 per cent of their original cost new price. This equates to a price of £8,050 and £6,175 respectively. Another improvement for the new Honda Civic is it will be cheaper to insure then before. The standard 1.4 i-VTEC SE model has a rating of 8E, which marks a drop of four insurance groups compared to the previous Civic’s starting version. The range-topping 2.2 i-DTEC EX GT model meanwhile fits in the insurance group 20E band, which also represents a drop of four insurance groups compared to the top-of-the-range Civic. The Managing Director of Honda UK, Dave Hodgetts, said: ‘These excellent residual value predictions and insurance ratings combined with lower CO2 emissions and improved fuel consumption make the Civic a very competitive proposition for both private and corporate customers’. The new Honda Civic is available for order now and will arrive in UK showrooms in January 2012.

Is hydrogen now a possibility? Hydrogen has long been touted as a viable alternative to petrol, diesel and electric vehicles (EVs) – even before they have really taken off. In its own way it’s the nuclear fusion of car propulsion; apparently only a matter of years away from revolutionising the industry. Just a few years ago we had the BMW 7 Series Hydrogen zooming around streets, dripping only water from its exhaust like a leaky tap. And the Honda FCX Clarity is forever at motor shows, in danger of becoming a Tomorrow’s World curio like the nuclear-powered Ford Nucleon or any biofuel model from recent history. Hydrogen’s USP is that – theoretically – it produces water vapour as its only by-product; assuming you can find a way to produce it in large quantities through a method that is itself economically and environmentally viable. The potential results are something of a holy grail in the power industry: cheap energy derives from water and producing… water. No oil, no carbon, no NOx or SOx or particulates. No reliance on foreign oil from unstable climes; no energy from coal-, gas- or nuclearfuelled power stations. Of course, realising that potential is proving to be rather difficult, but recent developments have suggested that there may be clean, economical methods for creating hydrogen not previously available – just at a time when Honda has opened a hydrogen refuelling station. In Swindon. With that in mind it’s time to ask, once again, whether hydrogen-powered cars are a real possibility.

Sixteen-year-old County Londonderry sprinter Sally Brown has capped a fantastic year with her being named as SportsAid’s 2011 One-to-Watch Award winner at the charity’s annual SportsBall in London. The award is presented to the UK’s best young sportsman or sportswoman based on their achievements and commitment over the current year. Previous winners have included Olympic diver Tom Daley and the current European junior athlete of the year Jodie Williams. Although still only 16, Sally has already lifted medals at some of her sport’s highest profile senior events this year. At the IPC World Championships in New Zealand, she won a bronze medal in the 200m (T46) and went one better at the same distance when finishing second at the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester. She gained another silver medal at the IWAS World Junior Championships in Dubai in April in the 100m before striking gold in the 200m. “I’m really honoured and can’t believe that I’ve been picked for this award. There’s so much talent in the UK and to be chosen as the One-to-Watch is amazing,” said Sally who beat 2,000 other top young athletes to get the award. “This is a great start to the season for me as I’m just getting back into training now, focusing on my technique and getting ready for the year ahead and winning this gives me a lot of confidence for that.
