Stop press… Hold the front Page! Exciting plans are under way at Bob Mullan Motors Campsie There are very few dealers that know the car business better than Bobby Mullan of Bob Mullan Motors Campsie. Bobby has been at the helm of this family run car dealership for over 35 years. The name Bob Mullan Motors has always been synonymous with quality, affordability and excellent after care. Even in the downturn of the market in recent years with a recession lasting a lot longer than first anticipated by most, business has been steady at
these Campsie premises. “We have always placed great importance in customer care and it has certainly paid dividends when business became tougher due to the downturn in market conditions. “I am so grateful to say that I have always had a very loyal customer base and I find it so rewarding when the extended families of my customers become my new customers. “It is great testimony to customer satisfaction, when new customers come on the recommendation of our exist-
ing customers. “My promise to customers has always been the same. You will not buy cheaper anywhere else. Whatever car you want, whatever make or model if we haven’t got it in stock, we will source it for you in 3 day and nobody will beat us in price. That is guaranteed.” Although business in the car trade has been steady throughout the years, ever the entrepreneur Bobby identified an opportunity to provide convenient and affordable car parking given
the proximity of The City of Derry Airport and launched bobs easypark which proved to be very successful. Bobby also opened a Homes and Interiors outlet with an extensive range of the finest bedroom, living room and occasional furniture and matching soft furnishings of opulent design. However, due to future plans for the car dealership. Bobby is closing this down with a massive sale starting now. “I am making a complete clearout of all stock. Everything must go.
“This is a sale not to be missed as prices will be dramatically cut for quick sale”, commented Bobby. “I need the space to make room for the plans we have to develop the car business. I want to give the customer what the customer wants - the car of their choice at the best possible price around.” Check out the latest offers at www. bobmullanmotors.com. But remember if you don’t see what you are looking for talk to Bobby or one of the team and you will have it in 3 days!!
Taillte Tank Girls pay tribute to Bob Mullan Motors Renowned for his generosity to charitable causes, Bob Mullan of Bob Mullan Motors has come to the rescue of 3 very adventurous ladies taking part in a rally to Mongolia. Well known car dealer, Bob Mullan, donated a Nissan Micra to the three lucky ladies of Taillte Tank Girls. The three intrepid adventures, Limavady woman Elaine Taylor, Co. Meath electrical engineer Aoife Raleigh and Co. Down youth and community worker Roisin Mohan; have been fundraising “like mad”, for their chosen charities, according to Elaine. Thanking Bob Mullan for the generous donation, Elaine said that the girls would not have been able to take part in the rally without the help
of Bob. “We can’t thank Bob and everybody at Bob Mullan Motors enough for the car,” Elaine said. “the car’s fantastic and we can’t wait to going now.” The Taillte Tank Girls are the only all female team from Ireland competing. In what is set to be a gruelling long distance rally of 10,000 miles, across 18 countries, the Micra donated by Bob Mullan, will have its work cut for it as the girls will travel from Britain to Ulan Batar in Mongolia. The course will see the Taillte Tank Girls travel over a third of the Earth’s surface, over some of the most hostile terrain known to man. Elaine and the rest of team will have to cross deserts and mountains and all, astound-
ingly, unaided! The Nissan Micra, donated by Bob Mullan, is the perfect vehicle for the challenging time ahead for the team. As the rules state the Micra’s engine is less than 2ltrs and is also younger than a 2004 model. The girls will have totally advised their own route and will be taking in the scenery of countries from Ireland and Britain, all the way to Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan until they reach their destination of Mongolia. The Taillte Tank Girls are appealing for sponsors and donations to help in the rally. Anyone looking to offer their help and support to the Taillte Tank Girls should email taillte. tank.girls@gmail.com.

Best weekend ever! By RORY MOONEY

What a weekend! That was the general consensus of Derry following three days and nights of top class music in Ebrington Square. Despite a false start over tickets and months of eager anticipation, BBC Radio One’s Big Weekend was a spectacular success. American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars brought the curtain down on Sunday night with an astounding set of hits, followed by an amazing fireworks display. Chorus after chorus was sang back to
Slimming World on Page 23
Mars by the hyped-up crowd as the US singer performed a medley of hits including Grenade, Locked Out Of Heaven and Just The Way You Are. Thanking the crowd, Mars said: "Northern Ireland, thank you so much. Until we meet again, I love you all, good night." Around 40,000 people attended the three-day event in Derry's Ebrington Square. Other artists who performed on the Main Stage on Sunday included Paramore, Olly Murs and 30 Seconds To Mars. In a surprise collaboration Irish band, The Script brought Labrinth on stage to duet on Hall of Fame and his single Earthquake. Girl band and former X Factor winners, Little Mix also performed on the Main Stage on Sunday.

Major peace conference held in Derry A major peace conference has been held in Derry. The conference was held to look at ways other countries can learn from the peace process in Northern Ireland. The three-day event was organised by Rotary International and the University of Ulster's INCORE Institute. Hundreds of delegates attended the event, including politicians, business leaders, policy makers, academics and peace activists. Speakers at the prestigious conference included, Juan José Ibarretxe Markuartu, former president of the Basque country autonomous community, Roelf Meyer, chief negotiator for the National Party government in South Africa during the transition from apartheid, and Chouchou Namegabe Dubuisson from Democratic Republic of Congo. Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, journalist Fergal Keane, former PUP leader Dawn Purvis and
the Human Rights Commission's Alan McBride also attended. INCORE director, professor Brandon Hamber, said the conference was a unique opportunity for delegates to learn from other peace-building initiatives. "Since the ending of the Cold War, there has been a proliferation of conflicts based on ethnic, religious, political and social issues," he said. "This is an ideal forum to look at creative approaches to the prevention and management of such conflicts.” Professor Hamber said that Derry as a city shaped by periods of conflict, reconciliation and now regeneration as the idle place to host the conference. Proposals to help move forward the Colombian peace process were formally presented to the Deputy Head of Mission of the Colombian Embassy in London at the conference. ‘Derry Proposals for Colombian Peace’, were designed to document
identifies 18 key points structured around the five themes that form part of the Colombian negotiation agenda: land reform and rural development; drug production and trafficking in Colombia, an end to hostilities, victims’ rights and political participation. The FARC, Colombia's largest guerrilla group, are currently involved in negotiations with the government in Havana, the Cuban capital. The current round of talks, which got underway in Norway last October before moving to the Caribbean, is the fourth attempt to reach a negotiated settlement of what is the longest-running conflict in Latin America. Professor Brandon Hamber explained that they examined how lessons learned from 15 years of post-agreement politics in Northern Ireland could contribute to the Colombian peace efforts. “While every peace process requires

A weekend that promised so much, delivered in a massive way. With even the most begrudging Derry people admitting that One Big Weekend was a tremendous success. Over 40,000 people flocked to the banks of the River Foyle to Ebrington Square to watch 40 acts grace the Radio One stage. The feeling of excitement was palpable all weekend as the magnitude of what was to come quickly dawned on the throngs of people who descended on Ebrington as the sun shone down on Friday. Back in 2004, when Radio One brought their One Big Weekend to Derry for the first time, has paled in comparison to last weekend. Derry has the honour of being the first city that has held the event twice. Also, it was the time One Big Weekend has been held over three days instead of two. From early on the Friday, Ebrington Square was a hive of activity, from young revellers, enjoying their first taste of a massive concert to the constant flow of people going to and from the bar, the atmosphere was electric. Radio One DJ Nick Grimshaw described the weekend as the “Jewel in the Crown” in Derry’s year as capital of
culture. Speaking backstage on Friday, the breakfast show host, ‘Grimmy’, said that One Big Weekend was really exciting for the Radio One team as well as for the public. “It’s really fun and exciting,” Grimshaw said. “It’s the first time we’ve ever done a three day event. “People are fully raving and it’s great to see.” Grimmy was full of praise for the Venue and the Ebrington site as a whole. “The Venue’s fantastic,” explained Grimshaw. “It’s great that it’s right in the heart of the city, normally we have One Big Weekend in some field somewhere outside of the city, so I love the fact all you have to do is walk over the bridge and you’re here.” Among the acts that had Derry bouncing was rapper Dizzie Rascal who brought on stage as a special guest, pop megastar Robbie Williams. However the former Take That member and Dizzie were blown out of the water by DJ Calvin Harris who literally lit up the former military barracks with a lightshow to end all lightshows. Friday proved a tough act to follow as the sun was replaced by a massive down pour of rain. Despite the rain which failed to dampen

Sunday’s line-up was filled by the heavy hitters of the music world. Among the acts performing on the Main Stage included Paramore, Olly Murs and 30 Seconds To Mars. In a surprise collaboration Irish band, The Script brought Labrinth on stage to duet on Hall of Fame and his single
Earthquake. Girl band and former X Factor winners, Little Mix also performed on the Main Stage on Sunday. Macklemore drew one of the most energetic crowds of the day on the ‘In New Music We Trust’ stage, in the Venue. The US rapper performed number one single Thrift Shop and finished with Can't Hold Us, which ended with the crowd holding him up by his feet. However the night was stolen by US singer-songwriter Bruno Mars who took the stage and knocked his set out of the park. The US crooner had the Derry crowd in the palm of his hands as he performed a medley of hits followed by firework display of epic proportions. Peter Ferguson (20) from Belfast said it was the first he has made the trip to Derry for a concert and that it won’t be his last. “I’ve seen the pictures and watched the news about Derry being the Capital of Culture,” Peter said “but I never expected this at all. “The place is clearly buzzing, everybody’s enjoying themselves and I’ll be definitely back again.” Social networking sites were awash with positivity about Derry, with the
majority of Facebook comments and tweets from people who sadly did not have ticket, saying how great the city looked and how much they wished they were there. Derry City Council hailed the BBC Radio One’s Big Weekend as an outstanding success for the city. Mayor Cllr Kevin Campbell said he was extremely proud of the city for successfully hosting the BBC’s flagship music event and having worldwide music such as Bruno Mars, Biffo Clyro and Calvin Harris perform in Ebrington Square. “It’s been an outstanding weekend for the city. There was such a sense of excitement and expectation and the feedback received has been so positive. The BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend provided us with a superb platform from which to showcase our city. “Through hosting a successful event will boost the city’s reputation as a location for events and I am confident this will encourage new audiences to come to the city and enjoy the many other events scheduled for City of Culture 2013 including the Return of Colmcille, Music City and the Fleadh.” The PSNI also hailed the event as a success as only 14 arrests were made, with only two for drug-related offences.

Derry to go for European Youth Capital 2018 Derry is set to compete for the coveted title of European Youth Capital 2018. Sinn Féin Northlands Councillor Eric McGinley has welcomed Derry City Council's decision to apply for the title. Cllr. McGinley said: "Following Council's unsuccessful bid for the European Youth Capital (EYC) title to coincide with this year's City of Culture discussions took place within the Council's Children & Young People's Steering Group around a future application. “Whilst there had been an initial view to apply for the 2016 title it is now recommended that this bid is delayed until 2018. “With the establishment of the new Foyle Youth Council and the desire to implement UNICEF's Child Rights Partners Programme it is believed that the immediate period should be used to fully develop and mainstream the children and young people's agenda within the city and district. “The period ahead is full of potential and we should all work together to ensure the city receives the accolade of EYC in 2018." The EYC is the title awarded to a European city for the period of one year, during which it will be given the chance to showcase, through a multi-faceted programme, its youth-related cultural, social, political and economic life and development. The EYC initiative encourages the implementation of new ideas and innovative projects, with regard to active participation of young people in society, and seeks to present a role model for the further development of youth policies in other European municipalities. Current holder of the title is Slovenian city, Maribor.
Undertones to perform at the Return of Colmcille Legendary punk band the Undertones have confirmed that they will be performing at the Return of Colmcille festival. Undertones bassist Michael Bradley and Olympic Opening ceremony 2012 writer, Frank Cottrell Boyce have announced that the band will perform on June 8. Joining hundreds of other local people who have signed up for what’s set to be the centre piece of the City of Culture year, The Undertones will be part of two major events on the day. The Undertones are playing a live set on Saturday afternoon when at the Gasyard plays host to the Here Comes the Summer stage as part of Welcome to ColmVille. Later that evening they will be taking centre stage in the punks section of the People’s Procession from 9pm. “We want the city to be-
Foyle disability art exhibition An exhibition of artwork by people who suffer physical and or sensory disabilities has gone on show. Users of the Foyle Disability Resource Centre FDRC have their artwork currently on display in the Richmond Centre. The exhibition of their work is a first of its kind by the FDRC and is the first time there has been an art exhibition by people with

The exhibition was made possible due to the strong partnership between the Western Health and Social Care Trust, the FDRC and their staff, The North West Regional College, and the Richmond Centre. come ColmVille for the day, letting the people find the quirky and unfamiliar stories of Derry at different venues. “It’s fantastic that the Undertones can be part of that at the Gasyard. “At that venue, it’ll be a juke box of Derry music, all under the watchful eye of Born Slippy – the greyhound who gave his name to an Underworld hit,” Frank Cottrell Boyce said. The internationally renowned band, will feature in the People’s Procession accompanied by punks on subbuteo stands, a nod to The Undertones lyric ‘because he took a flick and I didn’t know’ from My Perfect Cousin. Along with an armada of floats and hundreds of local residents in extravagant costume, the procession will weave through the city along Foyle Embankment, Strand Road and Queens Quay. Through a series of events
played out in chapters, The Return of Colmcille welcomes the mysterious saint back to the very city he founded, to his people, and the remarkable tales that he missed whilst he was away. Michael Bradley said of the Undertone involvement, “The idea of us playing at the back of a lorry in a big procession is great. I would have been annoyed if I wasn’t asked to take part. It’ll bring back memories of the bands waving at the crowds during the civic week parades. “There’s a real excitement as people sign up to take part of the procession and rest of the show. There is still time and anybody can get involved.” Audiences can expect storytelling on a grand scale, music, art, comedy, procession, performance and fireworks for this once in a lifetime weekend. With a cast and crew of over 800 people, the culmination of performances
will be an unforgettable showdown on the River Foyle where a monstrous foe lies in wait. A full programme of events and a map of the city and activity taking place on the Friday and Saturday will be distributed in the run up to the events. However after a spate of suicides right across the city in 2010 seen the figure rise to 25 people who committed suicide. Decision to appoint paramilitary liaison defended A community centre that received significant funding has defended the decision to employ workers to liaise with paramilitaries who issue threats to young people. In recent years, employees of the Rosemount Resource Centre have been actively engaged with republican paramilitaries and young people who have been threatened, with expulsion and violence, to mediate a peaceful outcome. However, Tommy McCourt, manager of Rosemount Resource Centre, rejected the suggestion that the new role primarily deals with paramilitaries. Speaking on BBC Radio Foyle Mr McCourt said: “A threat-making agency to a young kid of 14 or 15 could be a school teacher in his school, it could be his friends down the street, it could be his local community, it could be all sorts of people. “We’re referring to all of those, anyone who will threaten a young person, that’s who we’re talking about. That includes paramilitaries, but it also includes statutory agencies. The people that sell them the drugs are threats.” Mr McCourt said the programme had been running for almost two years and had already helped over 300 people. “The kids that are involved in this type of behaviour, their lives are under threat, by their own actions. “If we can engage with those kids and persuade them they shouldn’t
be involved in this type of activity, that there’s alternatives, then everybody benefits. “There are people out there we have no control over, who will also take the law into their own hands. What we try to do is prevent that from happening, we’re stepping in before they’re hurt.” It was recently revealed that the Rosemount Resource Centre was seeking to employ a programme co-ordinator and a community support worker. Funding for the two roles was secured
from the International Fund for Ireland (IFI). The successful candidate for the £22,199-a-year co-ordinator position will “engage with threat-making agencies on client’s behalf to seek alleviation of immediate threat and agree alternative paths to improvement”. Essential knowledge listed for the position includes “knowledge of paramilitary punishment activities, the history and social implications”. The job involves “the coordination and
management of a support, development and intervention project in the Derry City area aimed at young people and their families who are experiencing intimidation or threat or who are at risk of crime/ punishment. The programme will include mediation, community engagement, diversionary activities and support/training leading to personal development and employment opportunities”. The community support worker “will be required to work with and on be-
half of young people whose risk-taking activities have brought them to the attention of outside agencies (both legal and non-legal) and may have put them in danger of punishment”. In April, members of the Rosemount Resource Centre helped mediate a dispute between rival republican groupings in the city. Two Sinn Fein members’ lives, allegedly by dissident republicans, were threatened following a brawl in a city centre pub.

World’s biggest comic on show in city A local Derry artist has produced the world’s biggest comic book. The comic book itself is a massive 42 feet long and five and a half feet high and has been produced by Derry artist Joe Campbell as his contribution to the City of Culture year. Joe’s mammoth book, ‘Distant Fields’ which has been on display at Shantallow Library since last Thursday to Friday, May 31. Joe is a recipient of a City of Culture individual artists’ awards and Distant Fields is his first offering under that scheme. The exhibition is part of this year’s Earhart Festival in Shantallow. “It’s a difficult work to describe and you really have to see it,” explained Joe. “I took a twelve-page short story and enlarged each page up to about six or seven times the actual height of a standard comic book page. “Each of the pages is freestanding and when laid endto-end they form a 42ft long art installation. “The idea is you walk slowly along the line of pages reading the story as you go.” The basic idea was to represent what people see as a ‘comic book’. By turning his graphic comic art into a large format public installation, Joe has created something else that invites the viewer to engage with the work in a different way. You have to stand back or physically move to read the story. The piece is an object that
Worlds Largest Comic at the Shantallow Library. Joe Campbell (comic artist). Photo - Neil Mellon physically occupies the room as opposed to something you can read in your hand. The piece is so large it makes you stop and stand and think and hopefully – smile. The actual story is set in Derry and uses the city (and the artist as the main character) as a backdrop. It tells the story of two brothers from the city lost on the Somme in July 1916.
Distant Fields is also a ghost story, in the best tradition of Irish ghost stories. “I think people like scary tales. It may come from having to find ways to pass the long winter northern nights or having to be constantly huddled around a fireside. “I’m not sure, but I know most people enjoy being a bit scared now and again,” said Joe.
“I also wanted the city to feature in a comic book. I’ve nearly always set my stories in Derry right back as far as the late eighties. “It runs counter to the usual comic book setting of New York or some imagined American setting and it seems to work just as well and the city’s just sitting there a ready-made model for backgrounds.”
The story also touches on the city’s past and its history and on the ripples that still emulate from historical episodes such as the First World War and the four Sinclair brothers who lost their lives fighting on the Western Front despite coming from a Nationalist background. “Over a thousand men from Derry lost their lives during the Great War.

“Such histories still mean a lot to many people from the city and from all cultures and traditions. The piece attempts to include those histories into a short graphic story that visualises that time, the uniforms, the city and its past and hopefully will spark an interest in those particular events.” Joe has also recently exhibited at the Browse International Cartoon and Comic Art Exhibition alongside the likes of Ralph Steadman and his current work is featuring at comic conventions such as The London Super Con; the Dundee Comics Expo; New York MOCCA and The Copenhagen Comics Con. Joe is also a guest this year at the 2D Comic Festival staged at the Verbal Arts Centre in the city. Joe is an artist who has lived and worked in Derry all his life. He is a graduate of the Open University and is currently working as a comic book artist with a number of graphic novel publications to his credit including The Amelia Earhart Story written by Felicity McCall, published by Uproar Comics. His most recent graphic novel, Missing: Have You Seen the Invisible Man? has just been published by Accent UK and has received strong reviews in both the UK and the US.

Companies offered practical procurement training Local businesses are being encouraged to make the most of tendering opportunities by signing up for a new programme offering guidance on the public sector procurement process. The programme, which takes place in June, is free of charge, and is part of the Business Opportunities Programme being rolled out by Derry City Council, part funded by Invest NI and the European Regional Development Fund under the Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for Northern Ireland. The workshops will be delivered by leading experts in the procurement field who will instruct small businesses in a number of key areas including accessing procurement opportunities, cross-border tendering and export opportunities, public sector support, and the general challenges faced by small business. Invest Northern Ireland’s NW regional manager, Des Gartland, urged all small enterprises to consider the workshops. “While these are undoubtedly very challenging economic times, there are opportunities out there,” he said. “We want to equip local companies with the expertise they need
to compete on a level playing field, to be able to positively pitch their products and services in a highly competitive business environment. This is a fantastic opportunity for all small companies interested in boosting business performance.” Having successfully completed the workshop, training candidates will then be able to avail of oneto-one mentoring, geared towards addressing their specific business concerns. Led by Colin Borland, Joanne Gillen (both Bid Management Services) and Darren Richardson (Clarity Consulting), all procurement experts with significant industry and sector experience, the training has the potential to open new doors for many local companies, as Colin explained: “We find that many small businesses are deterred from applying for procurement opportunities, or are unsuccessful in their tenders, simply because they are unsure how to approach the actual process of drafting a bid. They have the confidence in their own services, but they lose out when it comes to sourcing the right tendering opportunities out there and outlining their company’s assets strategically on paper.
“We will be taking them through all aspects of the process, even working on live tendering opportunities where possible.” The mentoring will be specifically tailored to meet the needs of each participant, ensuring effective strategies targeting individual business objectives. The programme will also look at the opportunities presented by the development of strategic partnerships with other companies in bidding for new contracts and achieving business growth. The programme will be delivered via twoday workshops, one running on the 19th and 26th June and the other on the 20th and 27th June. Demand is expected to be high and with a limit of 15 participants in each session, interested companies should apply early for places.
Waterside theatre cash boost The firm tasked with regenerating Derry, Ilex, has helped the Waterside Theatre with a permanent, illuminated sign and demountable drop-down banner for the UK City of Culture 2013. Funding of £8,021 was awarded by Ilex through the Department for Social Development’s UK City of Culture Capital Infrastructure Fund.
Iain Barr, General Manager of the Waterside Theatre said: “The Waterside Theatre is playing a key role in the City of Culture celebrations, hosting many productions and events throughout the year. “The signage provides a legacy for the City of Culture, promoting the arts in the region and ensuring increased accessibility to the arts product for all”.
Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland added, “I am pleased that my Department has been able to provide financial support for this worthwhile project. “As one of the venues for the UK City of Culture 2013 this investment will help to market the Waterside Theatre as an events space not only throughout 2013 but for many years to come”.
For more information about the workshops and to register go to www.derrycity.gov.uk/BusinessOpportunities/ProcurementProgramme, or e-mail businessopportunities@derrycity.gov. uk, or follow us on www.facebook.com/DccBusinessOpportunities.

Still no new Ilex chief The body set-up to regenerate Derry, Ilex, has again failed to fill one of its top positions. A public recruitment competition for a chief executive did not find any suitable candidates, according to the Office of First and Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM). It is the latest problem OFMDFM has had in relation to filling senior posts at the rengeration company. Last year, Ilex faced a similar problem when it advertised for a new chairman, following Roy McNulty’s resignation in February 2012. At the time Mr McNulty’s resignation, OFMDFM said that they hoped to have filled his post by summer 2012. In answer to a question posed by Sinn Fein MLA Phil Flanagan, Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness said that other ways to fill the vacancy were now being explored. “Ilex is presuing the interchange programme to fill the vacancy and the competition is still on going.” The First and Deputy First Minister’s also said that temporary arrange-
ments have been made to fulfil the commitments of both roles. “Interim arrangements are in place and remain so until the Chair and Chief Executive positions are filled.” The post of chief executive was vacated by Aideen McGinley, who left for the BBC Trust last October. Ms McGinley had been seconded from the civil service. In 2012, the Public Accounts Committee criticised Ilex for spending £400,000 without proper approvals. The Public Appointments Commissioner, John Keanie, has previously been critical over the length of time taken to replace Sir Roy McNulty. Established in 2003 Ilex was established to promote the economic and social regeneration of Derry. Since its founding, Ilex has helped deliver the Peace Bridge and has also redeveloped two former military bases, Ebrington and Fort George. Ilex was also part of Derry’s successful bid to be City of Culture.
Donegal man charged with 1982 bombing A Donegal man has been charged with the murder of four British soldiers in the 1982 IRA bombing in Hyde Park, the Crown Prosecution Service has said. John Anthony Downey, 61, has been charged with the murders of Roy John Bright, Dennis Richard Anthony Daly, Simon Andrew Tipper and Geoffrey Vernon Young. The four members of the Royal Household Cavalry were travelling to Buckingham Palace when they were killed. Mr Downey has also been
charged with intending to cause an explosion likely to endanger life and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday, May 29). The bomb that Mr Downey is charged with planting was the first of two that caused carnage in London. In total, 11 people died and 50 people were injured by the bombs, which exploded less than two hours apart. In the first incident, a nail bomb in a blue Austin car was detonated as members of the Household Cavalry made their
way from their barracks in Knightsbridge to the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. Four men and seven horses were killed and a number of police officers and civilians were injured. A second explosion in a Regent’s Park bandstand killed seven Royal Green Jackets bandsmen. Sue Hemming, head of special crime and counter-terrorism at the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “The Metropolitan Police Service has been investigating
the explosion near Hyde Park in London which occurred on 20 July 1982. “We have reviewed the evidence gathered and authorised them to charge John Anthony Downey, 61, of County Donegal, Ireland. “It is alleged that Downey is responsible for the improvised explosive device contained in a car parked in South Carriage Drive, SW1, London, which resulted in the deaths of four members of the Royal Household Cavalry, Blues and Royals, as they travelled on their daily
route from their barracks to Buckingham Palace.” Security was stepped up in the capital after the bombings, which both the British and Irish prime ministers at the time condemned as “callous and cowardly crimes” and “inhuman acts”. In 1987 Northern Ireland electrician Gilbert “Danny” McNamee was charged with making the Hyde Park bomb and jailed for 25 years. He served 12 years before being freed under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.
In 1998 his conviction was quashed at the High Court, after a high-profile campaign by celebrities including Eddie Izzard. Sinn Fein MLA Gerry Kelly has hit out at Mr Downey’s detention and claimed his arrest was political policing. “John Downey is a member of Sinn Féin and a long-time supporter of the Peace Process. The decision to arrest and charge him in relation to IRA activities in the early 1980s is vindictive, unnecessary and unhelpful. It will cause anger within the Republican community.”
Creggan housing development
Traffic calming welcomed
Makeover for Ballyarnet Country Park
Residents who are set to move into a new social housing development in Derry will have to pay a “basic rent charge”. Social Development Minister, Nelson McCausland responding to a question from Foyle MLA Meave McLaughlin, said that residents in the new Ballymagowan site, found at the back of Creggan, will have to pay a service charge to help defray the cost of maintaining the area. Ms McLaughlin asked the Minister to, “outline the rationale used for the implementation of service charges on the new 180 unit social housing development at Ballymagowan”. The Minister said that based on advice from the developers of the site, Apex Housing As-
Sinn Féin Councillor Tony Hassan has welcomed news from the DRD Road service that consideration is being given to introduce traffic calming measures at Danesfort Crescent in this current financial year. Tony Hassan said: “Over the last number of months residents of Danesfort Crescent have raised some concerns with me about the safety of pedestrians and motorists in the area. “I have been in contact with DRD Road Service on their behalf over these issues and at the time road service said that they would look to see if the area met the criteria for street calming. “Now road service are saying that the area has met the criteria and will put in place a scheme for traffic calming in this financial year. “They have also said that a full consultation will take place with residents and that public notices will be placed in the local newspapers.”
Ballyarnet Country Park has been transformed due to a financial windfall that has created new events spaces. The park, which was the location of choice for the Earhart Festival which took place last weekend, was officially opened by Ilex and Derry City Council. Ilex – the company tasked with regenerating Derry contributed £233,000 to the project through the Department for Social Development’s City of Culture Capital Infrastructure Fund. Derry City Council also awarded £100,000 to complete works and was responsible for the man-
sociation, the charge will help defray the cost of maintaining an urban park, which will consist of a parkland, playing pitches, children’s play area and allotments. “Apex Housing Association has advised me that the planning permission received for the development of the Ballymagowan site included the provision of an urban park,” the Minister said. “The service charge being set by Apex is to help defray the cost of maintaining this area. The basic rent charge allows for the Association’s housing management and maintenance costs but not the maintenance of extensive open space areas.”
agement of the project. The rich cultural and historic park now includes a range of vibrant outdoor public spaces and is better equipped to play host to community events in line with the City of Culture programme this year and in the future. Ilex’s Cultural Broker Caoimhin Corrigan said: “These fantastic new public spaces will be ideal locations for cultural and community festivals giving people greater opportunities to engage and participate in local events such as the upcoming Earhart Festival, enhancing the environment for those attending
and artists. “The legacy of this project will live well beyond 2013, and is another example of Ilex regenerating the city through the delivery of sustainable cultural projects.” Mayor, Councillor Kevin Campbell added: “Derry City Council is delighted that this Parks Development project has now been completed which will bring new opportunities to Ballyarnett Country Park, providing the residents of the Derry City Council area with a revitalised community space for everyone to enjoy in this City of Culture year and beyond.”

The perfect solution for missing teeth In my experience, patients with missing teeth complain of difficulty chewing and eating, discomfort with their dentures and lack of confidence due to unsightly gaps. Many patients are unaware of the simple solution a dental implant can provide. A dental implant will look and feel like your natural teeth, whether replacing just one, a few or all your teeth, dental implants will restore your smile, improve your confidence and ultimately function just like natural teeth improving your overall quality of life. The effects of a missing tooth A patient with missing teeth (or just one tooth) will often suffer from a lack of confidence, shying
away from photographs and avoiding smiling. The patient is initially concerned about the gap in their mouth but over a period of time their jaw bone will shrink back and can make the patient look older than they actually are. Eating is also a huge obstacle, many patients will avoid eating out as they are embarrassed about their bridge or denture and eating certain foods is impossible. I recently restored a patient’s smile by securing their denture using dental implants, afterwards they said, “I wish I had done it 30 years ago, my life is completely different.” What are Dental Implants? A dental implant is an artificial root
that is gently placed into the jaw to act as an anchor to support one or more crowns or a denture. What are the benefits of a Dental Implant? • A permanent simple solution • Looks and works just like natural teeth • Eat anything you choose • No need to modify/reshape adjacent healthy teeth • No more denture adhesives • Increased confidence and an improved quality of life Can it replace a full denture? Implants can also be used as anchors to improve the stability and retention of loose dentures. Patients find great improvements dur-

Picturing Derry photo exhibition The first major photographic exhibition of Derry’s City of Culture year is opening at the iconic City Factory venue today (May 29). Picturing Derry, which is part of City of Culture’s flagship BT Portrait of a City project brings together, for the first time, some of the most iconic images of the Troubles in city in one exhibition. Legendary French photojournalist Gilles Caron’s previously unseen major body of work during the Battle of the Bogside in August 1969 forms a major part of the exhibition. It also includes the work of other visiting photographers from around the world as well as images by local news photographers. The project is curated by Declan Sheehan of the City of Culture’s BT Portrait of a City team. “This is one of the most anticipated photographic exhibitions ever to have been held in this city.” he said. “The photographs of Gilles Caron, in particular, many of which have never been publicly seen, present a unique take on what was happening in the Bogside in that tumultuous time. “Bringing together the work of these local and international photographers, artists and communities in one exhibition for the first time gives a fascinating insight into the events that made headlines around the world at that time, but also the daily life that was going on for the people here.” The exhibition consists of four main constituent parts: The work of the photographers of the city including Willie Carson, Larry Doherty,
News Briefs 30 new jobs created
Thirty jobs are being created with the opening of another pound shop in Derry. The local retail jobs are being created with the establishment of Poundworld’s first store in the city. It officially opens on Friday, May 31. The store is situated within the Richmond Shopping Centre. Chris Edwards Junior, trading director at Poundworld, said: “We’re really delighted to be opening our store in Derry, creating 30 new jobs for the area.”

Pilot court scheme
A pilot programme has been introduced at Derry Magistrates Court. The scheme deals with domestic violence cases which are being contested. DUP MLA Maurice Morrow raised the issue with Justice Minister David Forde. The Minister said that the programme is being independently evaluated by the University of Ulster, whose result will inform the Minister’s decision if the scheme is to be rolled out across the North.
Upgrade Northside PO
A Derry post office is set to be upgraded. The post office in Northside Shopping Centre is to be one of the Post Office’s new main style branches. The new-look post office is expected to open on Tuesday, June 18. Customers have been advised that the office will close for seven days from the June, 11 for refurbishment. Eamon Melaugh and Barney McMonagle, brings their unique local knowledge to cast a light on some previously unseen elements of life in the city. Photojournalists from around the world covered the conflict and the work of Gilles Caron and Clive Limpkin became iconic images, known around the world. Documentary photographers such as and Homer Sykes from the UK
and Brian J Gill from the USA fitted the Derry’s conflict into their studies of working class lives and youth gangs. Camerawork Darkrooms, a photography training collective established in the Bogside at the height of the Troubles with international curator Trisha Ziff, used photography as a means to express community identity. Over the same period, the official British Army photog-
rapher captured surveillance images of the community as conflict zone. One gallery room tells the stories of these opposing perspectives. Artists from the city and further afield, including Willie Doherty, Sean Hillen and Victor Sloan made the conflict in Derry their subject, establishing international reputations and bringing unique insight into the image of the city in conflict.
These photographs have been brought together to form the most substantial exhibition of a period of almost 30 years, covering many different aspects of life in the city from 1969 up to the late 1980s. The City Factory, the last major shirt factory to close in Derry~Londonderry, has been renovated to host a number of City of Culture events during 2013.
Drug warning
A dangerous new tranquiliser is being used as a recreational drug in Derry, a local MLA has warned. Sinn Fein’s Maeve McLaughlin says the drug - known as D10 - has a range of side effects and is “especially addictive.” “Apparently these drugs can leave you extremely depressed and may be especially addictive,” “People who use mephedrone along with this batch of D10s may substantially increase risks to their health and they should be aware of this.

Conservation volunteers win silver at Garden Show Ireland The Conservation Volunteers in partnership with Derry City Council won the silver medal in the team challenge event at the Garden Show Ireland, held in Hillsborough Castle. The concept of the garden was to give a flavour of the feel good factor in the city during the City of Culture year. The music notes on the fence are the first few notes of Danny Boy, the music tree and notes are made from oak from Gransha Wood and the piano key path represents the music flowing from the River Foyle. The stone used marks the 400th anniversary of the city’s walls. This is the third year in a row the team have won an award having won the gold medal in the previous two years. Ivan Black, Conservation Project Development Officer credits the gardens success to the hard work and dedication of the team. “We are delighted with this recent award which recognises the commitment and the horticultural talents of our team.” The Conservation Volunteers are currently working in conjunction with Derry City Council through the “Pride in Our City Campaign”
Members of Derry City Council’s Community Relations team who were awarded in the recent ‘Ulster Placement Employer of the Year’ Awards, coming first in the ‘New Partner’ Category at the event in the University of Ulster. Sit back and relax on the Red Sofa By DERMOT O’KANE
Derry is a city bursting at the seams with musical talent! With events such as One Big Weekend and Fleadh Cheoil nahEireann just around the corner, taking all the headlines, it is easy to forget some of the vibrant local talent the city has to offer. However one man is giving the chance for local musicians to showcase their talents in front of a audience with the help of the Sandwich Company in the Diamond. The Red Sofa will see artists perform every Sunday in the Sandwich Co. The man behind the initiative, John Ross has said he wanted to give a platform for local musicians: “It is a unique opportunity to showcase local talent,” John said. “The idea behind it was to bring a crowd in for a nice Sunday brunch with some music on. “We want to get people in and provide a cleaner music presentation on
a Sunday.” Still only in its infancy, the Red Sofa has already proven a hit with the public. “The feedback has been positive so far. “On the first week we had Conor McAteer and we had Betty Harrigan last week with a good turnout at both.” The Red Sofa is the brainchild of John, who also works to promote concerts in the Playhouse. John said it was an opportunity for everyone to do something different on a Sunday: “It provides something different to the usual live music experience in pubs. “People can come in on a Sunday, relax have some lunch and a cup of tea or coffee whilst enjoying some of the fantastic music from this city.” John started The Jamhouse in February 2012 and has seen the project go from strength to strength to the point of organising the North by North West Music Festival, which took place last weekend. John said that the goal remains to give great artists a platform to express their talent to as large an audience as possible and he was delighted with the success so far: “It’s been brilliant – I couldn’t ask for anymore.” “I came home from Australia and being very into music I wanted to do

I decided to develop the music side of the Playhouse and started up The Jammhouse by myself.” For artists to get involved the only condition is that they must have a CD. The artist’s CD is then played and available to buy in the Sandwich Co. all week until a new act takes over the next Sunday. The CDs are kept and available to buy in a specially installed display case.
Over 50 music videos have been produced and numbers attending the gigs continue to grow. John said that the young Derry music sensation SOAK was on the Jammhouse red sofa from the beginning and bands such as Little Bear and Paddy Nash have all been given a stage by the Jammhouse. The Jammhouse YouTube channel showcases local artists who perform Sofa Ses-
sions on the ‘Red Sofa’ in the Playhouse and has nearly 15,000 channel views to date. Many young Derry musicians have received their first exposure from The Jammhouse Sofa Sessions and monthly gig in the Playhouse. The Jammhouse Facebook page contains up to date information about the Sunday brunch and runs competitions to win a free Sunday Brunch for two.

Spice up your specs! Former Spice Girl and stage sensation Melanie C is inviting wannabe specs wearing superstars in Derry/Londonderry to compete for the Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2013 title and a holiday to St Lucia. Melanie has teamed up with Specsavers and anti-bullying charity Kidscape to bring specs wearers into focus at the Oscars of the glasses world. Melanie says: “I’ve had to wear glasses or contacts since my teens and there’s never been more choice for all ages. “Loving your glasses has never been cooler, all you need is a bit of confidence to make a real statement wherever you are.
“Personally, I love the geek chic look with heavy set darker frames. There’s so much pressure out there to look good whatever your age and let’s face it we all know someone that wears glasses. “These awards are to recognise specs as a fashion statement as well as a visual aid. “My favourite celebrity glasses wearers have to be Tinie Tempah and Alan Carr, you never see them photographed or on TV without them! “They’re great examples of how your specs can form a part of your identity. “I hope that we can find loads more specs wearers that make their specs a part of their identity too.”

What to do if someone dies without making a will? If someone dies without making a will we say that they have died "intestate". Depending on the value or size of the deceased person's estate it may be advisable to instruct a solicitor to assist in the administration of the estate and division of assets. The law determines who should get what in this situation by setting out very clearly the rules governing the distribution of the deceased's estate. If the estate is worth less than £10,000 or if the assets-such as the family home are jointly owned and therefore pass automatically to the other ownerthere may be no need to obtain a Grant of Letters of Administration. If however the value of the estate exceeds £10,000 then you usually have to seek a "Grant" in order to administer the estate.

City makes its mark on the culinary map This month the focus is on the food industry, and what we hope will be a great boost for local restaurants next month, with the launch of an exciting new restaurant guide aimed at establishing the city's place as a culinary capital as well as a cultural one. There's no doubt that the hospitality sector in particular has been feeling the full impact of the recession, as tightening household budgets naturally result in less money being spent on eating out. our growing status as an exciting and influential food destination. Locally the industry has taken a hit and we have seen the closure of a number of well known establishments in recent years. But there is the chance this year to make the most of a unique opportunity to reach new audiences and boost trade thanks to our City of Culture status, and local restaurants and producers are forging links to ensure they make the most of this influx of new business. The North West of Ireland enjoys the best of local ingredients with a wealth of natural produce on its doorstep, from locally bred Irish lamb from the Sperrins, to freshly caught seafood straight off the boat at Greencastle. While this has always been well known locally, we feel it's time to really start celebrating our local food and spread the word fur-
ther that Derry is a destination that deserves its place on the culinary map. This new guide will give local restaurants the chance to showcase not only their signature dishes, but also their message their passion for good food and their dedication to the local food industry. The book will provide the ultimate reference guide for visitors keen to see what the city has to offer, and reaffirming that Derry is a city proud of its food heritage - from a slice of fresh wheaten still warm from the oven, to sophisticated fusion dishes incorporating the best local ingredients. Luckily there are dedicated food heroes out there, championing local produce and committed to maintaining food integrity in the North West. These individuals need our support so they can continue to maintain the stan-

Super slimmers’ weight-loss success is in the bag! Slimmers in Derry are dropping pounds (lbs) and bagging up all the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to raise money for a good cause in The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw. Members of Slimming World groups have spring-cleaned their closets and are donating the clothes that no longer fit their new slimline figures to their local Cancer Research UK shop in Ferryquay Street. Janice Tracey who manages the local team of consultants says members were delighted to get behind the cause and jumped at the chance to recycle their old tops, dresses, trousers, skirts and more. The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw is a nationwide fundraising drive that sees Slimming World members donating clothes to Cancer Research UK, Slimming World’s charity partner for 2013. Each bag of clothes collected could raise up to £25. Janice said: “Members in our groups have lost 43,826lbs (3130 stone and 6lbs) since January this year and they’re feeling fantastic! “Lots of people have dropped down clothes sizes and their wardrobes are full of clothes that are too big and baggy now and they’re happy to give them away because they know that they’re never going to need them again!
“Our Food Optimising plan isn’t a diet that members follow for a little while and then ‘come off’ when they’ve reached their target weight. “At group each week we support members to make healthy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat that they can keep up for life so they really do slim for good.” Members have found it really liberating to get rid of all their old clothes and are not worried about ever needing them again – there’s no going back! It’s not just a more healthy diet that they love; it’s the fact that they are much more active now too. Ray who manages the Cancer Research UK shop in Derry, said: “We welcome clothes in all shapes, sizes and styles and were
thrilled to receive such a huge donation of clothing from the local Slimming World groups. “It’s amazing to think that they’ve lost so much weight that they’ve all got so many clothes to clear out from their wardrobes and we’re delighted that they’ve chosen to use their success to raise money for Cancer Research UK. “The money their old clothes raise will make a huge difference to people fighting cancer.” Anyone who’d like to slim down like these generous Slimming World members is welcome at any group – we now offer groups 6 days a week and have included 2 new venues (Gasyard and Templemore Sports Complex) and a Fabulous Friday morning group. To find out more, visit www.slimmingworld.com or call Janice on 07933124779.

Giving you real Derry views without real Derry news.
I hope you can help me. I’m a 42 year old man who has been living with the same woman now for many years. We have a nice house, decent jobs, a good car and live a comfortable life. I suppose I can’t fault her, she would do anything for me, but lately I’ve started thinking that we need some time apart. Even that I should move out altogether. One of the girls at work has been flirting with me, sometimes texting me - and it’s really turned my head. I’ve found myself making excuses for coming home late, just so I can go for drinks and spend some time with her. I’m starting to really fall for her. I got caught texting her over breakfast yesterday and got the third degree as you can imagine. Thankfully I managed to talk my way out of it. Anyway, I am starting to feel guilty now and really freaking out about how I’ll break the news at home. Is there any way to tell a woman you want to make a clean break without causing her to flip out or hurt her feelings??! She is my Ma after all. Regards, Doherty McLaughlin Holy Mary! Men like you sicken me. That’s your poor mammy’s house and you should’ve moved out of there years ago, instead of sponging off her and taking advantage of her good nature. You should be ashamed of yourself. It’s no wonder most Derry women think all men are useless. You remind me of my loser of an ex-husband. He was always going on about how much he loved his mammy. If it wasn’t for the fact he was still paying the mortgage on my house that he bought, or giving me child support money every week, I probably wouldn’t even let him take the wains. I let him though, cos that’s what good mothers do - every single weekend. Now sort yourself out and stop taking advantage of your Mammy just cos she loves her wains. Hope this helps. Majella.
Candy to blame for dramatic weight loss Childhood obesity levels the world-over are reported to be dropping drastically, as mothers everywhere neglect their children in favour of playing mobile puzzle game, Candy Crush Saga. “Ummm hmmmm” agreed concerned mother of 3, Teresa Appfordat, when we asked her whether she thought the kids eating out of the kitchen bin behind her needed a proper meal. “Sorry, be with you in just one second…” she added. “I haven’t eaten takeaway now in 2 months!!” said a slimline Jake McKeever, aged 6. “Actually, I haven’t really eaten anything…” he mused. “...unless you count that weird blue stuff that was under the sink!” “Mum, what was that?” he shouted repeatedly with no reply. Worldwide grocery sales have slumped for the first time in a decade, as the cost of purchasing of extra lives, additional moves and unlocking new zones on the Candy map has taken priority on household budgeting. “I used to get called ‘Porky’ at school” said 8 year old Tammy O’Rourke. “But thanks to the new ‘zero squared’ meals a day diet plan my mum has me on, I’m no longer getting bullied!” she beamed. “Although my mum did elbow me in the face last night for licking her iPad” she added wistfully. “Them wee sweets just looked so lovely though!!”
Employers are now warning female job hunters that competence in online puzzle games should not be added to your CV or Résumé. “But I’m on level 227 for god sake!!!” moaned
irate genius Stacy Summers on her unsuccessful application to become an attorney at a distinguished local law firm. “It’s a disgrace after everything I’ve achieved in my life.” she con-
tinued. “I’m going to email the fair employment people and make a complaint!...” “…Right after I finish this level I’m stuck at!” she added before returning to her phone for several hours.

What is Reiki? Reiki is a system of healing that originated in Japan and was developed by Dr Usui in the early 20th century. Reiki is a type of spiritual practise used as complementary therapy to treat physical, mental and emotional illnesses. A Reiki practioner aims to change and balance the energy fi elds in and around the body, this treats on a physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual level. Reiki is a Japenese word that translates as Universal Light Energy. The easiest way to understand its meaning is to split the word. ‘Rei’ means God or light or the
whole of creation. Every cell, every blade of grass, stone or tree......All that is. Ki’ translates as life energy, the vital energy that sustains life. Most forms of Martial Arts such as Tai Chi acknowledges the presence of this energy and focuses on channeling ki throughout the body to increase health, balance and well-being. This energy has a consciousness of its own based on the highest good for all. Many cultures have known since ancient times that an unseen energy fl ows through all living

She completed her First Level Usui Reiki (Reiki 1) and hence, Sinead's journey began. In Sinead's own words,
"I believe everything is Divinely timed and the connection I found to the Universal Light of Life Energy of 'Reiki' has supported me in leaving the past in the past, especially various traumatic events that she's encountered over the last 6 years, and to confidently surrender completely to the flow of life. When I need help, I ask and trust that a higher power will immediately offer assistance". Sinead's workshops are what she calls, "Angel lead" and she believes that Angels not only oversee ALL of her work but she receives daily guidance and direction as to structure, timing & individual client health needs and ways to help treat them. Sinead never ceases to be amazed by the evident power of Reiki. In Sinead's own words, "This Divine Energy has ALL the answers to life's quesions and ALL the solutions to life's problems. A

Café Del Mondo head chef Stephen Forbes serves up a treat for the readers of The Herald with some truly excellent cuisine. Put the ribs and mustard seeds, fennel seeds, bay leaves, cloves, shallots, salt and pepper into a large pot and cover with water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 4 hours. This tenderises the meat so that it will fall off the bone with ease. Remove the pork ribs from the water and allow to cool. Simply mix all the ingredients together for the honey and chilli glaze and pour over the ribs after they have cooled down. All is left to do now is BBQ the ribs until golden brown on both sides. Serve with a nice summer salad and some BBQ jacket potatoes.
What you’ll need: Serves 6
3 racks of pork ribs 1 tablespoon of mustard seeds 1 tablespoon of fennel seeds 2 bay leaves 2 cloves 2 shallots (halved) Sea salt & fresh ground pepper For the honey and chilli glaze: 500 ml of honey 6 fresh red chillies (deseeded and chopped fine) 4 garlic cloves (chopped fine) 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard 4 tablespoons of brown sugar Juice of one lime 1 tablespoon of cider vinegar
Book Review Latest instalment of Dan Brown’s blockbuster series - Inferno Dan Brown’s globe-trotting symbologist, known for his tweed jacket, Mickey Mouse watch and penchant for getting into international incidents, is back for a matter of life, death and Dante. Inferno throws Robert Langdon into the fire for an Italian adventure inspired by Dante Alighieri’s, The Divine Comedy. The heroic effort is a better one than Brown’s last novel, The Lost Symbol, and comes close to the mega-popular The Da Vinci Code in terms of entertaining tension. The new novel is probably the closest Brown will ever get to his version of The Hangover: Langdon wakes up in a Florence hospital with a bad case of retrograde amnesia after a gunshot head wound and a strange object connect-
ed to Dante’s Inferno. The cops, a private security firm and an assassin all are targeting him, so, with the help of a secretive female doctor, Langdon goes on the run to figure out the missing two days of his life. After three books — and two Tom Hanks movies — readers know Langdon, his smarts and his personality well, and Brown takes the opportunity to focus on building up the hero’s supporting cast, which is the strongest yet in the series. Dante himself even gets some face time. If you do not know much about Dante, Brown has you covered, giving a rundown of im-
portant aspects of the Italian poet and his works. Brown has a definite formula in place for putting Langdon through his paces, but watching him go through hell is about as close as a book can come to a summertime cinematic blockbuster.

Safe Computing We all enjoy the benefits technology can bring to our business and our dependency is growing with the spread of social networking and personal banking. But can we truly say that we are fully aware of the risks of this new dependency? Ask yourself would you walk away from your house or car and leave the door open? If not then why would you leave your systems wide open for someone to enter? As more owners put their business information online there is an ever increasing threat from hack-
ers to access our company websites and systems infrastructure. Most SME’s attitude is” why would hackers consider my small business when there are more lucrative larger organisations out there to target”. Well the reality is that the larger organisations have the resources and expertise to safeguard their systems and minimise their risk. SME’s are therefore the low hanging fruit, ripe for picking. In a recent survey of 583 U.S. companies conducted by Ponemon Research, 90% of the respondents said their organisations' computers had been breached at least once by hackers over the past 12 months. In the UK, statist i c s
are not as readily available. UK companies have concerns over releasing data on cyber-attacks, fearing that such information would damage their credibility if it were made public. At the very least businesses should attend to the following: Password Particular care should be taken when establishing passwords for your computer. Passwords should be: • at least seven characters long • a combination of letters, numbers and symbols • dissimilar to any word found in a dictionary • memorised if possible or locked away or stored in a safe area Antivirus and Firewalls As a minimum security requirement you should run both an antivirus and a firewall on your computer. They provide different but very necessary functions. Antivirus software detects and removes viruses and
firewall prevents malware and other Internet hacker attacks from reaching your computer in the first place. Working together they provide you with the best possible protection. Websites Implement procedures to backup core data on your website. Time and energy is spent creating the perfect picture, with owners taking days pondering over the detail in the development of their websites. The last thing they need is for tragedy to strike with data disappearing in an instant. Cyber-attacks are not the only concern. Robust backup procedures are vital and should be top of your list. There is also a need to safeguard data and you should be checking your requirement for Data Protection registration. Carry out a risk assessment now and apply safeguards as appropriate for your business. If you have any issues give us a call and we can signpost you to assistance.

Living with eczema Eczema is one of the most prevalent skin problems we see around us today and for many people it is “How do I live with eczema?” rather than “How can I cure eczema?” The boundary between a diagnosis of “dry skin” and “eczema” is blurred and many of the strategies used by eczema sufferers can be very helpful for those of us who are plagued by dry, itchy skin and discomfort. Eczema requiring medical intervention is a condition all on its own but many more people than in the past complain of some degree of eczema/dry skin. So many bathrooms now sport the large size bottles of some whole body moisturizer or another even though some of these may not be helping the problem. Whether the increase in these complaints is due to the dry, centrally heated and/ or air conditioned environments we live in now, to the higher standards of personal hygiene we require than in the past, with more frequent bathing or to the use of stronger skin cleansers such as the detergents found in shower gels and liquid washes no one can say for sure, but I feel that it is probably linked to all three to some
extent. First and foremost, check what is in your skin care products. Many people have absolutely no idea what they are using and that includes people who really need to keep an eye on their skincare regime. SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) SLES, (sodium laureth sulfate) artificial fragrances and colours are all potent causes of skin reactions so look carefully at the back of your bottles. It can be surprising what ingredients different ranges contain. Not so Simple after all? For example I was doing a review of the Simple brand of skincare products recently and was astonished to find that while, as they claim, they don’t contain fragrances or colours, and they contain absolutely everything else, from SLS to parabens. Their Kind to Skin Nourishing Body Wash shower product has 31 ingredients, including both SLS and SLES and propylparaben as a preservative. Although most people will not have any negative reaction to these artificial ingredients, if you
have dry or sensitive skin these detergents are a potential trigger for dryness or allergy which you need to be aware of. Only you will find what suits your skin and you really need to take a bit of time actually checking the products before you use them just to be sure. The improvement after you have made even a simple change can be dramatic. Seek advice from the experts The National Eczema society is a fund of information for those living with eczema and I strongly recommend anyone who wants to improve their approach to their eczema to look at their website and think about getting their handbooks. They do very good booklets for parents of children with atopic eczema, teens and adults with eczema and cover every aspect of those changes you can make which will help you live your life more enjoyably and comfortably, from information on how to find out what triggers your eczema to managing your eczema day by day. My own family cannot use anything with these artificial additives and have to stick to only the plant
based cleansers and moisturisers that we have created at Marble Hill to but we only found this out after many years of trial and error and this is why I developed my own brand of truly natural products... Many dermatologists recommend using products which contain fewer ingredients, reducing the chance of a bad reaction but, as the Eczema Society says, you have to find the emollients (moisturisers) that suit your lifestyle. Eliminating obvious triggers is a good start but only you can find the right combination. For example, many new mothers who have had no previous problems with their skin find that their hands are sore, dry and cracked once they start caring for their baby simply as a result of frequent washing with liquid hand washes and it is a simple matter to swap these drying cleansers for something less severe, natural bar soap for example, which cleanses just as well but is less inclined to strip oils from their skin. Even though there are really no cures, for eczema, there are ways to help live with it.

The Mousetrap – Diamond Anniversary Tour The world’s longest running stage production, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, is set to thrill local audiences when it performs at the Millennium Forum from Monday, June 17 to Saturday, June 22, as part of its Diamond Anniversary Tour. The first ever tour of the record-breaking production opened on September 11, 2012 in Canterbury and is currently on tour through 2013 due to unprecedented demand.
This classic murder mystery play is now in its 60th year in London’s West End. On November 18, 2012 to celebrate this milestone, a star-studded gala performance took place at St. Martin’s Theatre. Agatha Christie’s grandson, Mathew Prichard welcomed the audience for this diamond jubilee celebratory evening, which was also the 25,000th performance. All of the proceeds from the night were donated to
Mousetrap Theatre Projects, the leading theatre education charity seed-funded by the play. The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around
every corner. The cast for the second leg of the tour includes: Steven France (Eastenders, The Bill) as Christopher Wren, Karl Howman (Brush Strokes) as Mr Paravicini, Bruno Langley (Coronation Street, Doctor Who) as Giles Ralston, Graham Seed (Yes, Prime Minister UK Tour, BBC Radio 4’s The Archers) as Major Metcalf and Jemma Walker (Family Affairs, Eastenders) as Mollie Ralston. Elizabeth Power (Eastenders) as Mrs Boyle
and Clare Wilkie (Eastenders) will play Miss Casewell. Bob Saul will reprise his West End role as Sgt Trotter. Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap performs at the Millennium Forum from Monday 17th to Sat 22nd June. Tickets are now available from the Box Office. Telephone 71 264455 or visit www.millenniumforum.co.uk for bookings. Opening Night Offer: All seats £19.50!

Kickboxing a positive influence for Derry stars By DERMOT O’KANE
Derry kick boxers Aaron McCarron and Jay McVeigh won their first K1 bouts in The Glassworks on Saturday, May 21. Both men believe in the positive influence the sport can have and have their sights set on further success. For Aaron McCarron it was his first kickboxing fight in seven years and he was victorious after one minute. The former double European kickboxing champion said enjoyed the return to competition: “I was away in the States and in Dublin but came back home about a year ago. I always wanted to get back into it so I took the bull by the horns and just got straight into it. “K1 is different from what I had done before. It is similar to kickboxing but it has knee strikes, leg kicks and so the blocking needs to be lower as strikes are allowed below the waist line. “The training was tough as I had to get used to fighting again and the fight was actually the easiest part. “ Jay, who has been kickboxing for five years, having got involved through a cousin, has competed in ten fights prior to his debut at K1. The Derry man said he was well prepared for the ‘more aggressive’ K1 bout. “I enjoyed the fight and I’m not looking back now. I’m only looking towards the future – onwards and upwards.” Jay said interest in the sport was growing every day and that it was doing great things with kids to get them off the street corners and doing something positive. Through kickboxing he said it is possible to learn a lot of respect for other people and form friendships: “In the last fight it was blow for blow for
three two minute rounds. Then afterwards we shook hands and now are friends on Facebook. He was my enemy for six minutes and then friends for life.” Jay said that for someone who has never done kickboxing before doesn’t have to fight. He said “The training alone will give positive thinking and get someone in the right place mentally.” Aaron agreed that kickboxing was positive and reflected on how it had helped him: “I was no angel growing up but kickboxing has always been the most positive thing in my life. It has kept me on the straight and narrow. I definitely do believe it has been and is a positive influence on my life. “In our club the majority of the people are not fighters. There is a great social side; it can keep you fit and give a feel good factor” Both men are members of PT Kickboxing Gym in Carrigans run by three time world champion Paddy Toland. Jay said his coach was ‘brilliant’ and ‘a great fella with a great mentality.’ Aaron trains twice a day with Paddy Toland and is also able to do his own stuff such as sprints and hill work in his own time. Jay and Aaron will have their eyes on the World Kickboxing Tournament taking place in the Venue this November. It will be the biggest ever kickboxing and K1 event to be held in Ireland. And the former two time European cham-

pion, is hoping to compete for a title at the event: “I am hoping for a chance to go for a title there. I want to keep pushing and climb the ladder with the goal of turning professional. It’s all down to my coach Paddy. He makes the decisions and picks the fights. “I have never come out of the ring disliking my opponent. In my last fight we warmed up in the same room, came down the stairs together and talked after. “There is a real sportsmanship from it. I would say to anyone to come along and try it.”

Derry continue to drop points at home Derry City once again dropped valuable points at the Brandywell on Friday night. Derry missed a host of gilt-edged chances as they were held to a draw by Tommy Dunne’s Cork City. Following their poor display against UCD, derry would have been looking to reinforce the Brandywell’s reputation as a fortress against the Leesiders, however the men from the Rebel County had other ideas. Daryl Horgan's stunning effort seven minutes from time looked to have won it for Cork, only for on fire Derry striker, Rory Patterson to equalise two minutes later. Derry missed a chance to go second in the table as northwest rivals and champions Sligo Rovers were held to nil-nil draw in Limerick, as St Patrick's climbed to summit of the league. A dour first half from both sides was littered with sloppy errors and absolutely no creativity. The first half was largely uneventful with both teams having five players in the midfield were cancelling each other out until Derry City manager Declan Devine changed things up at half-time when the game came alive. The City boss replaced left-back Dermot McCaffrey with youngster Michael Duffy during the break. Barry McNamee slotted in at leftback whilst Duffy went straight over to the left side of midfield, which was a masterstroke as the promising youngster posed a threat from the start of the second half. The Candystripes started the second half with much more purpose and, after some neat passing; Patrick McEleney unleashed a thun-
derbolt of a shot from 25 yards which flew narrowly wide. Declan Devine's men had a wonderful opportunity when, Rory Patterson, who was clean through on goal was denied by a wonderful Mark McNulty save. Minutes later Duffy crossed for Patrick McEleney, missed a sitter who headed wide from close range. Turning from provider, Duffy fluffed a chance from five yards after the Cork City goalkeeper had parried Patterson's free-kick into the youngster's path. After an intense spell of pressure, Cork broke at the other end and Horgan curled a left-footed effort over the helpless Derry keeper, Gerard Doherty. Cork’s lead was short-lived however as Rory Patterson seized upon poor defending by John Dunleavy. The Cork defender attempted to pass the ball back to goalkeeper Mark McNulty but Patterson reacted brilliantly to toe poke the ball into the net to set up a frantic finale, but Cork held on. Declan Devine’s troops will be looking to bounce back to winning ways this weekend as Derry defend their FAI Cup crown as the Candystripes travel to Cork to face Blarney United this Saturday afternoon in the second round of the FAI Cup.
