McGuinness warned of threats Threats against Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness from dissident republicans have continued, it has been claimed. The Deputy First Minister’s party colleague and Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has claimed that police notified Mr McGuinness over the weekend of continuing threats to his safety. Mr McCartney also claimed that dissident republicans have been ‘stoking’ up rising tensions between rival republican factions in the city recently. “Over the weekend Martin McGuinness was informed by the PSNI that anti-peace process elements in the city are attempting to ‘stoke up young

people to attack and take him out’,” Mr McCartney said. “It is claimed that they have been keeping watch on him and his movements. This threat is consistent with the recent paint bomb attack and the verbal attack on Martin’s wife Bernie outside the family home recently.” Mr McCartney continued: “It is deeply concerning that this particular threat is linked to manipulation of young people. Sinn Féin is very sure of what we are about and the direction that we want to take our young people. “We will not be deflected by those who wish to remain in the past. “I am also sure that it is the path

and dissident republicans in the city in recent weeks. Two weeks ago, these heightened tensions exploded into violence as rival republicans were engaged in a bar room brawl on the same day as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher died. Two members of Sinn Féin claimed that police informed them that there was a threat against them and that they were the victims of a vicious assault by a group of dissident republicans. These claims were refuted by the 32 County Sovereignty Movement (32CSM). In a statement a spokesperson for the 32CSM claimed that no threat against the pair existed.

shared by republicans across the island who are genuinely committed to building a new, agreed united Ireland.” Mr McCartney said that republicans will not be silenced by threats from dissidents. “Obviously any indication of threat has to be taken seriously. While Martin McGuinness and other republican leaders have previously received many threats that have not become public there are times when in political leadership staying silent is not an option. But republicans will not be silenced by threats like this.” The latest threat on the Deputy First Minister’s life comes off the back of heightened tensions between mainstream

Annual Earhart festival – best of local talent The annual Amelia Earhart festival is set to be the biggest and best festival ever, according to one of the festival’s organisers. With this year’s Earhart festival only weeks away, plans are beginning to gather pace, as over 40 events and an estimated 800 performers are set to dazzle the Greater Shantallow community. Greater Shantallow Community Arts and Earhart festival organiser, Olly Green told the

Herald that this year’s festival will focus almost exclusively on the city’s local talent. “This year’s festival will be ran and performed almost entirely by the local community,” Olly explained. “It’s going to be the biggest and best festival we’ve ever had.” Even with the focus on local talent, the Earhart festival has one eye on the rest of the world as the theme of this year’s festival, is ‘Speaking to the World’, as Olly explains.

“The Speaking to the World carnival parade will be a major event for us,” Olly said. “It’ll be the first major event for

Community Relations week in the city and we’re hoping to bring over 800 participants to take part in a multi-cultural

carnival parade from the heart of Shantallow to the newly refurbished Ballyarnett Country Park. “There will be amusements for kids, Teenage Kicks on stage and everything from the Teddy’s Bear picnic to helicopter rides, for a great family day out.” The week long cultural extravaganza will embrace every aspect of culture and the arts, with a distinctly Derry feel. “It’s all local acts that will be performing this year to give

them the opportunity to shine. “We’re extending an invitation to every community and cultural group in the city to take part. “With the theme Speaking to World it can be any form of cultural expression.” Highlights of the weeklong festival include a Zumba-thon, Tea Dance, Foyle Golf Open, and the Amelia Earhart lecture. The festivals runs from May 1926.

All-Ireland Scór Sinsir finals Police appeals

‘A Big Weekend’ GAA-style gets underway this Saturday, April 27 with the cultural showpiece that is the All-Ireland finals of Scór Sinsir. Having hosted the junior finals back in February, and following the huge media attention around GAA Annual Congress, the Oakleaf County once again becomes the focal point of the GAA at a national level. With curtain call of 3pm, marginally short of twenty-four hours before the ball is thrown up in front of an anticipated sixty thousand people for the Allianz National Football League finals at Croke Park, it’s another busy weekend for the GAA in general, and for the host county. Derry GAA County Chairperson John Keenan commented: “Events are certainly coming thick and fast at the moment,” Mr Keenan said. “Our local club season has just gotten underway with thousands of adults and children participating in

Credit: Margaret McLaughlin Gaelic games throughout the county; we’ve had GAA congress and the national finals of Scór na nÓg. “Both events will live long in the memory of those who were there and I’m sure Saturday’s senior finals will be right

up there again. “The junior finals set the bar for the year unbelievably high in terms of events surrounding our own 125th anniversary and a special year for the City, but it’s a challenge we look forward to.

“The volunteer effort involved on the organisation side has been inspirational, and a real tribute to the ethos of the GAA and our clubs. “We will have some of the finest musical, theatrical and dance talent on show in Derry this weekend and it is well worth a look for anyone unfamiliar with Scór as the cultural side of the GAA.” With up to three-thousand spectators anticipated, the finals are sure to be another economic boost to the City’s leisure and hospitality industry – a point not lost on John: “On behalf of all in the GAA locally, I’d like to welcome all our visitors to Derry this weekend. “There’s a great vibrancy and excitement around the City and County at this time and we’re anticipating another bumper weekend. “It’s a great opportunity for the local area to showcase its attractions, culture and hospitality.”

Shots heard in Culmore Police in Derry are making enquiries following a report of shots being heard in the area of Culmore Point around 10pm on Thursday April, 18. Anyone who was out shooting in the area or has any information is asked to contact police at Strand Road on 0845 600 8000. PSNI appeals Police in Foyle are asking the public for assistance in relation to the following incidents. A large panel window was smashed at a DVD shop in Clooney Terrace around 9.20pm on April 20. A number of youths who had been standing outside the shop for a time then ran off. Two laptops and jewellery were among items stolen during a burglary in the

the

Woodvale Road area of Eglinton sometime between 5.30pm and 7.45pm on April 21. One of the laptops is a very old model (Lenovo) and contains photographs that are of particular sentimental value to the owner. The householder is extremely anxious to have the laptop returned. Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact police on 0845 600 8000 or a member of your local Neighbourhood Team directly – details can be found on the PSNI website. Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Tragedy avoided as Derry building collapses By RORY MOONEY

Tradgey was narrowly avoided in Derry last week following the collapse of a building with deep historical significance in the heart of the city's Fountain area. The top two storeys of the building at Kennedy Place, which was for many decades the headquarters of the Ulster Unionist Party in the city simply collapsed into the street at around 1pm on Friday afternoon. The building, which from the 1920's until the late 1940's also served as a Jewish synagogue, had been in a severely dilapidated state for many years. Serious injury or worse was narrowly avoided. No one was injured as the result of the collapse of the building; however a car parked directly beneath the falling debris was completely submerged destroyed. Residents however reported that the vehicle's owner had been in the car just a few minutes before the building collapsed. A postman at work in the area when the building collapsed was able to tell the emergency services attending the scene that the car was empty. The collapsed structure is also placed just yards from a local nursery facility, Foyle Day Care and staff there as well as PSNI officers moved

swiftly to make sure that children attending the school were moved out quickly. The PSNI and members of the Fire and Rescue Service (FSR) also advised residents in the remainder of Kennedy Place to leave there homes as fears emerged that portions of the remaining structure appeared to be bulging outwards prompting fears of a further collapse. FSR search team members then moved into the scene and began to shift rubble from around the crushed vehicle in order to verify that no one was trapped inside. A SDLP representative who works nearby attended the scene shortly after the incident took place. Councillor John Boyle said: “In many ways local people were very fortunate that this collapse did not happen at a busier time of day. “Needless to say the potential for a catastrophe was always there and had it happened at school time or at the beginning or end of the working day, we may well have been dealing with fatalities and injuries. “The Foyle Day-care Nursery is only yards away from the scene and it is horrifying to think of the consequences for infants and parents at drop off and pick up times. “It is only by the grace of God that everyone in the vicinity of this col-

Monsignor Martin ordained in Armagh By RORY MOONEY

Monsignor Eamon Martin has been ordained as coadjutor Archbishop of Armagh to Cardinal Sean Brady, the Primate of All Ireland. Monsignor Martin, 52, was inaugurated in Armagh on Sunday. He was appointed as coadjutor Bishop in January. Cardinal Brady will stay as Archbishop until at least 2015 when he is expected to retire. Monsignor Martin will succeed him as the leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland. He is expected to face formidable challenges in the future, including dealing with the legacy of the sexual abuse of children by members of the clergy. Monsignor Martin already has considerable experience of the challenge ahead, having served as a director of the Na-

tional Board for Safeguarding Children - the watchdog body set up by the Irish church in response to the clerical abuse scandal. Before his most recent appointment, Monsignor Martin had served as administrator of the Diocese of Derry since November 2011, following the retirement of the Bishop of Derry, Seamus Hegarty on

health grounds. The new coadjutor Archbishop was born in Derry in 1961 to a family of 12 children. He served as an altar boy at St Patrick’s Chapel in Pennyburn, close to their home. Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness and the Justice Minister David Ford, were among those in attendance.

Man arrested after fatal road crash near Derry A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal road accident near Derry. David Richie, 69, from the Tullyally area of the city, died in a head-on collision on the Glenshane Road near Burntollet Bridge at 20:45 on Wednesday, April 17.

A man and a woman were treated in hospital after the accident between his car and a Vauxhall Astra. Two men, aged 22 and 26, were arrested after the crash and released on bail. Police said anyone who saw a black Vauxhall Astra and

a silver Vauxhall Astra on the Glenshane Road before the collision should contact Strand Road police station on 0845 600 8000 or speak anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

ham Warke was nearby when the building collapsed and initially thought the sound was being caused by construction work going on in the area before running to the scene and said that urgent action was now re-

quired to resolve the issue of dereliction in the district in order to avert tragedy. Other residents in the area said the recent spate of high winds had been responsible for the ultimate demise of the building and said they now

feared other premises in a similar condition in the area could suffer the same fate. Search dogs had been brought into the area to make final checks on whether or not anyone was trapped in the debris.

‘Ordinary decent artists’ – Open Door 77 By RORY MOONEY

A group of Derry artists have banded together to enhance the arts scene in the city. Open Door 77 are providing a chance for aspiring artists the opportunity to develop and showcase their work, as Derry is being widely publicised as the City of Culture. A collective of artists, Open Door 77 have been going little over a year now, however as founding members Colm Mulhern and Stephen Boyle explained the genesis of the group was back in 2007. “Myself and Stephen were living away,” Colm said “We both studied art and we came back looking for studio space and the conversation started then. “But really the City of Culture bid was something viable that we could latch onto. “Another member Rory joined the group and we thought how many more people are in the same boat as us, so we decided to expand it and open up a group with the notion of a grassroots collective. “We decided that there should be a voice for ordinary people who paint in their kitchen or a community group and give them a chance to show their work.”

As the group expanded, ideas began to surface of starting educational workshops with a focus on working from the bottom up with a grassroots ethos. “Initially we thought if we could take over a factory floor, it could be a place for people to come and interact much like the Nerve Centre was when it first started,” Stephen said. “It could be a place where people could meet, work and collaborate with each other and that’s when we thought of starting up educational programmes – of professional artists coming in to talk to school kids. “That’s what we’re trying to create – a grassroots artistic scene in the city. “Everybody that we’ve spoken to has agreed with us, that there is a need for what we are trying to do. “The idea is to help and let artist’s work and offer advice to steer artists in a certain direction.” With their reputation growing, Open Door 77 have already been hard at work as they were commissioned with painting the artwork in

the newly opened Sandwich Company. The momentum keeps on rolling as Open Door will have number of exhibitions in the pipeline. In May Open Door artists will be exhibiting their work on an individual basis In London Street and then as a collective as they hold their debut exhibition in the summer in the Playhouse. Hoping to build on a grassroots movement, the long term objective of Open Door is to setup a viable and sustainable base to allow artists to work. “We want to have somewhere where artists can go and be creative because creativity creates creativity. “However at the minute there’s a lot funding needed mainly due to red tape and the cost of overheads so it’ll be a slower burner than we first hoped, hopefully the more established we become we’ll be able to build on what we’ve so far.” Stephen said. Already gaining international Open Door have said that numerous professional artists living across the world have expressed an interest in what the

collective have been doing. “Living all over the place,” Colm said. “We’ve made contacts with loads of different artists across the world, they may not be heavy hitters in art but they’re making a living from art and they’ve all expressed an interest in what we’re doing and hopefully some of them will come to Derry and be a small part in what we are trying achieve.”

‘A century of peace’ – Dalai Lama In a hugely historic crossing of Derry’s Peace Bridge, the Dalai Lama delivered a ringing endorsement of the peace process during last week’s visit to the city. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet visited the city to lead children in a symbolic walk across a peace bridge, delivering a message of hope and support for the peace process. Undaunted by the sharp downpours of rain, the exiled Tibetan leader wowed the public and press alike with much chuckling and laughter in a combination of spirituality and humour which charmed those around him. Dressed in his characteristic red robes the Dalai Lama said: “The last century was the century of violence. This must be the century of peace. My generation’s century is now gone, but the future is still in your hands.”

He insisted: “You have the main responsibility, the opportunity.” He also declared: “There is no other alternative to the peace process. There is no other choice - you have to work and live together, so we should not act like animals.” He was invited to Derry by Richard Moore who, blinded by a plastic bullet at the age of ten, is now director of the charity Children in Crossfire. The Dalai Lama described Mr Moore as “my hero,” saying he had reacted to the tragedy of losing his sight by keeping his mind peaceful and calm. Touchingly, he held Mr Moore’s hand as he described their relationship and spoke of the need for peace and reconciliation and of building a happier and more compassionate world. Mr Moore replied: “We hope that by bringing together the spirit of His Holiness, the chil-

dren and the culture of compassion from our organisation that we can create a real legacy of peace.” Mr Moore thanked the Dalai Lama for coming to Derry during the city’s year as Culture capital of the UK. The Tibetan spiritual leader met Church of Ireland Bishop Ken Good and Msgr Eamon Martin, who is set to become the next leader of the Catholic church in Ireland, as they walked along the bridge accompanied by 300 school children from both sides of the community waving a variety of brightly coloured flags as they sang Peace Is Flowing Like A River. Irish folk musician Christy Moore was among the performers at a conference on compassion, in which the Dalai Lama spoke to a packed audience, in the Venue in Ebrington Square.

Local choir perform for Dalai Lama A Derry based choir was amongst the stars who performed in the Venue, for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, last week. Encóre Contemporary Choir were left beaming with delight after performing for His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the Culture of Compassion event held today (April 18th) in the Venue in Ebrington. The conference, organised by Derry based charity Children in Crossfire, was a huge success with acts such as Christy Moore performing along with

a host of local talent. Encóre’s Musical Director, Emmet Doherty, said: “This is without doubt the most exciting and unique event we have performed at to date. “Not only were we sharing the stage with some of Ireland’s finest talent but we also sang for His Holiness The Dalai Lama - a rare honour indeed. “With a crowd of around 2500 people and the event being streamed live via the internet, it was also the largest audience we have ever performed in front of, which was in itself

an incredible experience for us as a choir.” The choir gave a rousing rendition of the Labi Siffre classic ‘Something Inside So Strong’. Emmet added: “The event, which was based around the theme of compassion was truly moving and inspiring, it was an experience that I will never forget. “I know I speak for the whole choir when I say that it was both a joy and a privilege to have performed at an event of this calibre.”

Mayor highlights importance of digital economy An event to showcase the local digital and creative sector was held at the Tower Hotel last week. The Mayor, Cllr Kevin Campbell joined a host of speakers to ensure the community and voluntary sector in Derry and the wider region benefited from opportunities in the digital and creative technology sector. The Mayor, in his address, while acknowledging the important role of foreign direct investment companies such as Seagate Technologies, Allstate and Fujitsu, etc, said the development of the local economy is much more dependent on the growth of local indigenous businesses and organisations. “As the City of Culture year progresses, it is becoming clearer that one of the biggest winners is the digital and creative technologies sector, who continue to progress in fields such as digital film making, sound recording, digital publishing and broadcasting to name but a few. It is also clear that a strong community and voluntary sector contributes significantly to the local economy. Unfortunately, apart from in a few cases the community and voluntary sector and the creative digital sector have not joined up for mutual benefit,” he said. He acknowledged the important role played by Derry City

Council in the development of the digital economy and the ICT sector. He said: “The role and value of Derry’s digital economy is very significant. The sector brings more than £35 million in to the local economy, employs hundreds of people, and it hosts many of our most innovative entrepreneurs. The sector is expected to double in size over the next 5 years so we are very excited about what the future holds. Derry City Council and our partners have been working to ensure that the necessary funding and resources are in place to ensure the City fully maximises the Creative and Digital Economy opportunity.” The Mayor said that Council would continue to work with its partners to ensure that the necessary funding and resources are in place to ensure the city fully maximizes the opportunities that exist for this industry to thrive. “We are currently working with Invest NI to secure funding to actively stimulate and aggressively accelerate the digital and creative economy in Derry aiming to create 100 new jobs in the sector over the next 30 months. We have secured funding from the Department for Culture Media and Sports to make Derry a Super-Connected City with super-fast broadband available to businesses, business parks

Petition to save UU nurseries SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey has presented a petition to the Speaker of the Assembly on behalf of staff and students at the University of Ulster’s Magee and Jordanstown Campus’, stating their opposition to the closure of onsite nursery facilities. Presenting the petition to the Speaker, Mr Ramsey said; “Parents are very worried that the nursery provision provide a vital social investment for the future, and clearly job losses will have an impact. “I have met and am in continuous contact with parents and staff who are

concerned at the possible closure of the crèche facilities at the University of Ulster at Magee, and at Jordanstown. “Parents value their services and closure would cause considerable inconvenience and hardship. The Foyle MLA also said that it would be a “retrograde step” for Magee to downgrade its existing day-care facilities ahead of the campus’ proposed expansion. “In particular, it occurs to me that with the increasing emphasis placed on early year’s intervention and the need for stronger childcare provision

alongside the anticipated expansion of the Magee campus, it would be a retrograde step for the University to downgrade or privatise its Day Nursery. “I am requesting that senior management at the University of Ulster would look again at these proposals and I am urging that the University to seek alternatives as it does not lend itself to key elements of the programme for the government Widening Participation, especially single mothers who will be further disadvantaged in terms of trying to study Third Level Education.”

Derry and the City of London even closer. “A key part of the city’s offering during 2013 and its year as City of Culture was a series of creative and digital events taking place across the city including the 2D festival and the Culture

Tech Festival,” he concluded. Among the speakers at the event were Mark Nagurski, Culture Tech; Marty Melarkey, Culture Company; Niall McGurk / Caoimhin Corrigan, Ebrington Creative Hub / Ilex; Brian O’Neill, Enterprise NW;

Culture Jam Weekend A unique event saw 11 artists working with 120 young people at the Beech Hill Hotel as part of the Culture Connecting Communities Programme. The ‘Culture Jam Weekend’ enabled young people from communities across the city to come together for the mini arts festival which delivered a range of innovative and creative workshops in drama, animation, street art and music. A range of the city’s finest young musicians kept everyone entertained during breaks and a final gig at the end resulted in the performance and exhibition of a range of excit-

ing and original artwork, musical compositions and performances. Speaking about the event, Festivals Officer Helena Hasson said; “The weekend offered young people from communities across our city the opportunity to experience a creative environment working with an art form of their choice and enjoying performances from Musicians, DJs and Rap Artists their own age. “The aim of Culture Connecting Communities is to challenge perceptions about our cultural heritage and unite people by creating a cultural identity that we can all feel connected to in some way.

One Big Weekend tickets snapped up in under an hour Tickets for the eagerly awaited BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Derry were snapped up in under an hour on Wednesday morning. However a bidding war has broken out on online auction site eBay for tickets. Within minutes of the event selling out, pairs of tickets were already listed on eBay. Pairs of tickets have already attracted bids of more than £150. However, Radio 1 has promised to put a stop to the re-sale of secondary sale of tickets. Radio 1 said that it “reserves the right to cancel” any tickets sold on by people who got passes to the event in Derry. In a statement, a spokesperson for Radio 1 said: “Tickets for BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend Derry~Londonderry are free and we work with those running major auction websites and sales outlets to have posts offering tickets for sale or trade removed. “Those offering tickets for sale are breaking the Terms & Conditions they agreed to during the booking process and we reserve the right to cancel them.” Social networking site Facebook was awash with comments of people expressing their delight of hav-

ing bagged tickets. Twelve and a half thousand tickets were available for each day. The event will take place at Ebrington over the Spring bank holiday weekend in May. While the full line-up is yet to be announced Olly Murs and Two Door Cinema Club are among the acts already confirmed. Ben Cooper, Controller BBC Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra said: “It’s great to see the enthusiasm and excitement in the city for BBC Radio 1’s biggest event of the year. “We will be bringing some of the biggest DJs and artists in the world and demand has been huge, so I’m sorry if you didn’t get a ticket. You will though be able to catch all the action on Radio 1, BBC Three, on mobile and our website.” The event is being staged with the co-operation and support of Derry City Council. As with previous Big Weekends, local residents were given preference for tickets: 45% of the available tickets were reserved for those living within the Derry City Council area; 45% were reserved for those resident in the rest of Northern Ireland; with the remaining 10% for other audiences across the UK and those in the Republic of Ireland.

Police crackdown on illegal gaming machines

Charity event for Foyle Search & Rescue and Great Ormond St On Friday, April 26 the team at Brewers Fayre/Premier Inn at Crescent Link, Derry/Londonderry, will be holding a spectacular charity evening to raise vital funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity and Foyle Search & Rescue. From 7pm the Brewers Fayre team and their willing volunteers will be welcoming guests and inviting them to join them in a fun-packed evening raising money for a very deserving cause. There will be fun and games to suit every taste, from a full race card at “A night at the races”, to raffles and auctions. Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity needs to raise over £50 million each year to make sure the hospital remains the world-class pioneering institution it is today.

Support from fundraising events like this helps them to buy vital equipment, fund pioneering research and most importantly rebuild and refurbish some of their hospital site. Foyle Search & Rescue was established as a charity in July 1993 and has adopted the role of protecting human life in and around the River Foyle in Derry / Londonderry, one of the most dangerous and fastest flowing rivers in Europe, infamous for its high level of mortality. Foyle Search & Rescue has grown to be a source of comfort to many who look to them not only to search for those who are missing, but more importantly to prevent people entering and dying in the river. Craig Turnbull, Deputy General Manager of Brewers Fayre, said, “These

are two amazing charities who need constant support to maintain the amazing standards they have, and to continue the level of work they do. We really hope the people of this great city will get behind our event

Police in Derry have seized £25,000 and 60 gaming machines during a crackdown on illegal gaming in the city. One man was also arrested during Operation Blackjack, carried out in the city last week. Operation Blackjack visited 15 premises across Derry. Around 60 police officers took part in the day long operation and they were joined by a member of the Gaming Commission from London. “Following concerns raised to us by the public in relation to illegal gaming, local neighbourhood officers in Foyle carried out a number of searches as part of efforts to disrupt the illegal gaming industry here in the city,” Area Commander Chief Inspector Jon Burrows said. “On top of the seizure at the residential property we inspected 15 premises right across the city to ensure there were no illegal gaming machines being used.” The man was arrested and the cash and machines seized during a search of a residential property in the city, police said. Chief Inspector Burrows continued: “I am glad to say that on the whole the majority of premises were operating within the law however any machines discovered were immediately seized by police. As part of this one man was cautioned in relation to having an illegal gaming machine on his premises. “This is not a victimless crime. There are real issues here around addiction and exposing younger people to the culture of gambling. Part of our regular city centre patrols are checks of arcades and similar premises to ensure no one under the age of 18 is allowed entry. “While this particular operation has proved very successful regular inspections will continue to ensure that all premises are operating legally.” PSNI Neighbourhood officers were assisted in this operation by colleagues from Crime Team, Dog Handling Unit, G District Licensing Officer and advice and guidance was provided throughout the operation by the Gambling Commission.

85% of residents satisfied with city

By RORY MOONEY

A new survey has revealed that 85% of residents in Derry are satisfied with the city. The highest level of satisfaction among residents was in deprived areas where 91% of people were found to be “very satisfied” or “fairly satisfied” with the city compared with 84 per cent generally. The results of the Citi-Scope survey, which reveals the attitudes of people in neighbourhoods across the city to issues including healthcare, education, employment, and physical security, have been published by Ilex, the urban regeneration company for Derry. The research also found that relations between Protestants and Catholics in the city are better than they were when the last such survey was carried out in 2009. Over six in ten people said relationships between communities had improved over the past five years compared to just fewer than four in ten people four years ago. There was strong support for cross community festivals as a means of enhancing community relations with respondents (71 per cent) viewing the City of Culture as “an event that will enhance community relations”.

However three quarters of residents asked Ilex, about the number of jobs in the city said there was a need to improve employment opportunities. According to the results of a new survey conducted by the firm, which also found a high degree of recognition there was a need to improve activities for young people (64 per cent), housing (59 per cent), and cross community relations (52 per cent). It also underlined that access to affordable childcare and public transport were barriers for many people seeking suitable employment or training. Results also show that rural dwellers were more satisfied with their immediate living environment and were almost five times more likely to express an interest in starting their own business. Ilex’s Director of Strategy and Regeneration Gerard McCleave, said: “These survey results, alongside the Peace Bridge survey, which examined lifestyle patterns, support the view that the significant investment in public realm space including Ebrington, Peace Bridge and Queen’s Quay, is contributing to increasing numbers of residents utilizing new city spaces.

Different Class I N T E R N AT I O N A L M E N S W E A R

“Research also reveals that almost half of the people living in the city would prefer to live in a mixed religion neighbourhood and one out of every two have indicated that they would prefer to work in a mixed religion workplace. “It also highlights that access to affordable childcare and public transport are major obstacles for people looking to get suitable employment and training. “Interestingly, the responses from those surveyed in rural areas differed quite significantly from their urban counterparts with rural dwellers stating that they were more satisfied with their immediate living environment, resulting in a strong sense of belonging. “They were also more optimistic about the future and were more interested in studying a part time course and/or starting their own business. “However, access to services including transport and education still remain constraints to regeneration in these areas. “These surveys play an integral role in examining the impact of the One Plan on all areas of life within the Derry City Council area and are important in helping us to plan the provision of services for the future.”

Lough Foyle not fully protected A part of Lough Foyle is not a fully protected wetland due to an on-going border dispute, it was been claimed. Environment Minister Alex Attwood revealed that the Lough is not a fully internationally recognised Ramsar wetland site because; “part of Lough Foyle which falls within the jurisdiction of the Republic of Ireland” has not been registered by the Irish government. Ramsar refers to the setting of an international convention on the importance of wetlands as waterfowl habitats that was held in Iran in 1971. Mr Attwood says he has written to his Dublin counterpart Phil Hogan “to ascertain his view on the matter.” The ongoing border dispute between the Republic and the UK over who owns the Lough has led to difficulties in the past. The Irish government says the Lough Foyle foreshore belongs to the Republic of Ireland under its State Property Act (1954). Minister Attwood claims not

the entire Lough is a protected waterway due to its shared jurisdiction. “The UK Government signed the Ramsar Convention in 1973 and ratified it in 1976. Each Contracting Party to the Convention is required to designate wetlands in accordance with criteria agreed by these parties for inclusion in a list of ‘Wetlands of International Importance,’” he explained. “Lough Foyle, situated on the north coast of Northern Ireland, is a large shallow sea Lough which contains extensive intertidal areas of mudflats and sandflats.

“It is an internationally important coastal site for wintering waders and wildfowl. Because of its international importance Lough Foyle was designated as a Ramsar Site in February 1999,” he added. Mr Attwood said the Ramsar site includes the whole of Lough Foyle Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) and the intertidal area of Magilligan ASSI in Lough Foyle. He said the protected boundary conforms exactly to the Lough Foyle Special Protection Area. However, part of the waterway is still not protected.

Are you having a family celebration? It’s great to come together with family and friends when we have cause to celebrate. Throughout the year there are many events such as birthdays, anniversaries, religious and seasonal celebrations when families have the opportunity to get together for a good party. If children are going to be there it is important to consider if it is appropriate to have alcohol present or not. Research shows that parents are the most important influence on young children’s attitudes towards alcohol (aged 5 to 12).* Therefore it is crucial that we show them a good positive example where alcohol is concerned and ensure they are not negatively affected by our drinking choices.

Remember: Children See – Children Do If the celebration is about the child (such as a childs’ birthday or religious event), it is more appropriate to consider an alcohol free celebration and something that focuses on the child. Consider going to a local play/adventure park or having fun games at home. If the celebration is mainly for adults but children will be present, think about what your child will See if adults are drinking alcohol.

. Think about what time of the day you are going to introduce alcohol. People are more likely to get drunk if they start drinking early.

. If you feel you would like a drink, have it later in the evening and consider leaving your child with a childminder/ responsible sober adult.

. set an example by drinking sensibly and not getting drunk (the recommended daily amount of units 2-3 units for women & 3-4 units for men.)

. Use measures for pouring spirits and wine if at home. . Have fun entertainment for the children such as face painting, magicians, clowns & bouncy castles.

. Provide entertainment for adults such as music or karaoke. . Provide food throughout the event including snacks. . If you feel people are getting drunk in front of your child it is best to take your child home/away from the party.

Have you had an accident at work? If so you may be entitled to seek compensation from your employer. if you can show that your employer was negligent and as a consequence of their negligence you suffered an injury or loss and damage of some kind then it may be possible for you to claim against them. In order to do so however it is important to be able to demonstrate that it was reasonably foreseeable to your employer that given the state of your working conditions or environment that it was likely someone might have an accident. Your employer has a duty of care towards you as an employee regardless of how many hours you work or whether you are full time part time, temporary or permanent. Danielle McNally is a Business Officer in Derry City Council’s Business Opportunities Programme, offering local businesses essential advice and support throughout 2013.

Making the culture calendar work for business We’ve now passed the 100 day mark in our City of Culture journey, and while the city’s cultural celebrations are in full swing, local businesses are working hard behind the scenes to make the most of the opportunities that are opening up thanks to the culture brand. During Enterprise Week here at Derry City Council we saw the high level of interest expressed by local companies keen to use 2013 as a springboard for local business. In response to the feedback we received, moves are currently being made to build on the links that have been forged over the past few months, and equip local companies with the knowledge they need to make the most of

up and coming events. With major outdoor events such as Radio 1’s One Big Weekend (May 24-26), Music City (June 21), the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann (August 11-18)and the Return of Colmcille (June 7-8), being staged over the coming months, increasing tourist numbers will inevitably have a positive impact on local businesses who make the most of the opportunities presented by each occasion. A special day-long programme run by the Business Opportunities Programme will take place on May 1, aimed at supporting local companies, and as it’s open to all businesses I would encourage everyone to attend. On the day we

will be providing useful information about the logistics of each coming cultural event, from access routes and business hotspots, to opening times, geared towards assisting businesses in devising strategies for the coming months. A number of leading figures involved in event management and service delivery, from Fleadh Cheoil and Culture Company will address local businesses and give details of their specific events. These sessions will be followed by an afternoon of capability workshops in marketing and social media. This is a unique opportunity for anyone hoping to boost business throughout

North West Independent Hospital GP Evening North West Independent Hospital is one of the longest established private hospitals delivering high quality healthcare since 1989. With advanced surgical and medical facilities our highly qualified staff are committed to providing excellence across a wide range of specialities. North West Independent Hospital has been holding a series of GP evenings in Roe Park Resort, Limavady. Invitations to attend went to local GPs and those in a forty mile radius of Limavady. One of our Consultants, Dr Iris

Menninger MRCOG CCT Consultant Obstetrician spoke at length on Ovarian Cancer. In January of this year there was a huge campaign on the television highlighting the fact that GPs were finding it difficult to distinguish between the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Ovarian Cancer. In her talk Dr Menninger explained the different methods to detect the onset of Ovarian Cancer and the avenues open to GPs to have their patients seen and the symptoms checked quickly and efficiently.

Dr Menninger held a question and answering time afterwards and all GPs agreed that it was a very informative and helpful talk on a subject which is so very important to the wellbeing of their patients. Mrs Elizabeth Dallas, Hospital Director, thanked Dr Menninger for coming along and taking the time to speak to everyone on this very important issue and thanked all the GPs for attending. Our next GP evening will be held in May and invitations will go out to GPs shortly inviting them to attend.

Iconic local Hotel awarded Four Star status

Main Bar @ Da Vinci’s

Iconic and renowned local hotel Da Vinci’s on Derry’s Culmore Road has this week been awarded four star status by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board under its new quality grading scheme. Da Vinci’s Hotel continues to be a market leader in the hospitality sector after almost 13 years and it comes as no surprise that NITB has revised the Hotel’s star rating from 3 stars to 4 stars in recognition of the progress made in the last eighteen months. Over the past year and a half the management of Da Vinci’s Hotel has worked closely with the Northern Ireland Tourist Board to ensure capital expenditure allocated by owner Garvan O’Doherty would meet the high standards and criteria set by the Tourist Board to achieve four star recognition. The 65 bedroom hotel embarked on a significant project which seen major renovations undertaken in the property’s bedroom block, hotel lobby, Style Bar, Main Bar and Grillroom Res-

taurant with additional ongoing work to be rolled out during this highly anticipated year of City of Culture. Responding to news of the award, General Manager, Andy O’Doherty commented, ‘The management and team at Da Vinci’s Hotel are thrilled with the announcement that we have been awarded 4 star status. This was our goal and this achievement is testament to the hard work of our team and the investment by the owner in the property. It is the perfect time to be presented this classification upgrade as we get underway in our year as City of Culture and we are well placed to capitalize on the demand for quality, four-star accommodation.’ Under the new grading system from NITB it’s not just about the standards of the fixtures and fittings customer service plays a pivotal role and it was in this area that Da Vinci’s felt it already had a cutting edge. With a well documented

reputation as first class leaders in customer service the Hotel committed to further enhancing their customer service standards by ensuring all staff completed the World Host Program. Da Vinci’s Hotel was the first hotel in Derry to complete the World Host Program managed by NITB and funded by Department of Employment and Learning. Denise McLaughlin, Food & Beverage Manager at Da Vinci’s Hotel qualified as a World Host Facilitator, she explains ‘At Da Vinci’s Hotel we have an ethos to ensure that our service consistently exceeds our customer expectations and we continually strive to improve and ensure we are the best in our field. This programme is a great stepping stone for 2013 when the eyes of the world will be on Derry and here at Da Vinci’s we are preparing our staff to be world class.’ Commenting further on customer care and service, Andy O’Doherty added, ‘We are proud that once

again the service standards in the hotel were recognized after recently winning a major award with Wyndham Hotels for quality assurance and customer service. Our customers are our business and our staff our greatest assets and in the report our staff provided service which was deemed to be 5 star and deservedly so. This result will give them even more confidence to prepare and deal with the influx of new customers to our city and our hotel during 2013. The passion and professionalism of our management team and staff will ensure that this outstanding hotel is a credit to both its owner and to the city.’ For further information about Da Vinci’s Hotel or queries regarding packages, room hire and/or Food and Beverage please contact the hotel on T. JAZZ FESTIVAL

Page 46

Jazz festival gig guide With the annual City of Derry Jazz and Big Band festival only weeks away The City Herald, takes a look at some of the acts that are set to take to the stage. Jammed packed with festival favourites along with some of the biggest stars and newest names on the jazz scene, this year’s festival is set to be the biggest festival to date to celebrate the city’s hosting of its inaugural UK City of Culture status. Headliners include Soul Rebels, who have been described by Rolling Stones Magazine as ‘Utterly uninhibited hip-hop hybrid, not to be

missed’. If jazz music is the heart of New Orleans, then the Soul Rebels’ music is the blood that pumps through the city’s veins. They embrace the rich jazz traditions of their homeland but add life-affirming vocals and hip shaking grooves aplenty. Couple those elements to funk, ska and hip-hop, with harmony vocals and more catchy horn lines and solos than you can shake a stick at, and you have a good time party band like no other with an infectious energy that’s impossible to resist.

P

The Neil Cowley Trio play The Nerve Centre

The Neil Cowley Trio is not your typical jazz trio. A dazzling composer, pianist Cowley creates deeply engaging, and dynamic music that journeys between poetic and poignant, pomp and splendour to powerful riproaring riffs. Their music fizzes with the energy of rock and surges with the dynamics of the dance floor. Embracing experiences in other genres – the highs of the dance music, the grooves of funk, and the elegiac nature of orchestral music, bringing to life characters through melody, harmony, vast dynamic ranges and drama. It is instrumental music that references Debussy and Steve Reich and Arcade Fire, and is powerful enough to break down standard perceptions of genre. Also performing over the Bank Holiday weekend are The Overtones. The all male vocal group will bring their blend of classic 50’s harmonies with a modern pop twist to the Millennium Forum. The Overtones have been taking the album charts by storm since they unleashed their vocal harmony talents on the world in 2010. The fantastic five-piece have already notched up a number of

The Overtones visit The Millennium Forum during the festival chart hits, and are a regular feature on our TV screens – well with those looks they’d be wasted on radio! The handsome quintet have come a long way since their painting and decorating days, where they were spotted by a talent scout singing during their tea break, before launching them on the path to stardom.

Since then their unique harmonisations of old and modern day hits have landed the lads a five album deal with Warner, and made them a bit of a household name. The group’s sound can be traced right back to the vocal harmony groups of the 30’s and 40’s, through the stars of the doo-wop explosion of the late 50’s and 60’s, right through to classic modern day pop music.

Successful Networking… ...make it work for your business. Networking is about building your profile locally and developing new relationships. A lot of business owners thrive in this environment and enjoy the experience however there are many that dread the prospect and refuse to participate. With current market conditions it is vital that you consider networking as part of your marketing strategy. Using local networks and business groups is a great way to get yourself and your business known in the local community. Building relationships with potential customers, contacts and sources of referral for your business is important for your continued success. Planning, preparation and practice are all important so don’t just jump in. You need to think this through and prepare a networking strategy. Some useful points to consider for your strategy; • Purpose -ask yourself why are you going and set event goals? • Cost -consider event cost; is the time and effort worthwhile? • Success -determine what networking success looks like to you? • Pitch -develop your story, sell the benefit not the business • Practice -don’t wing it or become complacent

• Outcome -have realistic expectations • Connect -make sure to follow up on your connections & promises • Measure -analyse results and revise strategy, if necessary Networking is about people; not selling and you must be prepared to give in order to receive. Remember relationships take longer than one meeting to develop and these need to be worked at. Make sure to greet each new contact with a willingness to learn more about them, a keenness to assist, and an understanding to stay in touch. First impressions count so make yours a good one. Dress appropriately for the event and make an impact with a good handshake, eye contact and a genuine smile. Acknowledge their name and engage them with a question about themselves rather than telling them all about you. You may want to ask some of these useful questions: • What do you like best about what you do? • What got you started in that direction? • What do you love/enjoy most about what you do? • What do you see as the coming

trends in your business? • How would you describe the ideal client/customer/prospect for your business? • Do you belong to any other network groups? Have plenty of business cards with you and make notes about your connections on their cards as a reminder. With the right preparation and focus, networking can be the most valuable tool for your business.

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis Even the stars get Dandruff

For many people the first time we saw Jane Seymour was not as Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, but using her flowing tresses to sell us Head and Shoulders to treat dandruff, which has been described as “The Most Commonly Exploited Skin Disease” by a group of researchers in a paper published in 2000. It may not have launched her career but it certainly got her noticed, as dandruff is a problem that many people have experienced at some stage in their life. In fact at any one time up to 20% of the population may be suffering from the symptoms of dandruff. Marked by itching and flaking of the scalp dandruff is usually diagnosed by the sufferers themselves and treated at home. The root cause of dandruff is not known but we do know that it is not about the hair, it is about the scalp, and skin cells growing and dying off too fast and then leaving the scalp as flakes of dead skin. It can run in families and the severity of the flaking and frequency of bouts vary from person to person. Stress can

be a factor and many people may have found the recent cold, dry weather has triggered a bout of dandruff or made it worse. If you have dandruff, don’t let it get you down - lots of other people have it too and there are lots of ways to tackle it.

Simple approaches

Surprisingly, simply brushing your hair regularly can be a good way to begin coping with dandruff. Because an oily scalp is related to skin flaking away as dandruff, brushing the hair with steady firm strokes carrying the oil down the shaft of the hair away from the skin can help. Anti-dandruff shampoos are used successfully by many people and there are many to choose from. Coal tar, sulphur, selenium, salicylic acid, ketoconazole and tea tree oil are some of the active ingredients commonly found in anti-dandruff shampoos and it can be helpful to swap one for another if it seems to be becoming less effective against flaking as they all act in different ways, some being anti-fungal, others affecting rate of cell turnover and so on.

Is it Dandruff at all?

Of course, flaking, itchy skin on the scalp is not always dandruff and if you are not finding that your condition is improving or if it does not seem like ordinary dandruff in the first place there are other conditions which cause itchy, flaking scalp. Probably the most common of these in numerical terms is seborrhoeic dermatitis (also known as seborrhoeic eczema or seborrhoea) which is similar in that it usually affects the scalp, causing itching, redness and flaking on the scalp but it can also involve the face, down the sides of the nose, in the eyebrows, eyelids, in and around the ears and the groin and upper back and chest in men. The severity of seborrhoeic dermatitis is often related to stress and because it affects more than the scalp can be very damaging to selfesteem while, because it is so itchy, it can make the sufferer irritable and tense. Globally up to 10% of the world’s population are thought to suffer from some degree of seborrhoeic dermatitis which is believed to be an inflammatory response to yeasts, particularly a yeast (or

fungus) which lives on us all, called Malassezia which occurs naturally on the skin but is present in larger quantities on oily areas, related to the sebaceous glands which produce the sebum secretions. For this reason many preparations used for seborrhoeic dermatitis involve anti-fungal agents such as ketoconazole and often the other preparations I have already mentioned, although areas can become so involved they require specialist attention and sometimes steroids. The sole product we produce which contains any essential oils is the Health Scrub Bar which many people have found very helpful for relieving the symptoms of seborrhoeic dermatitis. We put this down to the very small concentration of naturally antifungal tea tree oil since it does not contain any chemical pharmaceutical ingredients.

Not Seborrhoeic dermatitis?

Other conditions which may cause flaking of the scalp include psoriasis, eczema, and ringworm, which is also a fungal condition. Occasionally dandruff can be related to re-

actions to drugs so if you have resistant dandruff and you are taking medication it might be something to check out.

Something to think about

In babies cradle cap is a form of seborrhoeic dermatitis caused by yeasts and interestingly, in Africa, Shea butter is used to treat and prevent fungal/yeast infections, from Athlete’s foot to sweat rashes. I don’t know if it’s a coincidence but pure Shea butter is increasingly being recommended as an all natural treatment for cradle cap, softening and loosening the scaly deposits and allowing them to be gently washed away. For the time being the online comments we read on the mums web forums relate to the ability of the shea butter to simply soften the crust but who knows? We don’t have the research yet to show whether Shea Butter can eliminate fungal conditions by providing a physical barrier to their oxygen supply (as has been suggested to me by a leading cosmetic chemist) but it would be a great boost for all the women in Africa who rely on Shea butter to provide them with a Fair-trade income if we could find out!

Café Del Mondo head chef Stephen Forbes serves up a treat for the readers of The Herald with some truly excellent cuisine. Spring lamb is the best lamb to eat but is quite pricey this year because a lot of lambs didn’t make it through the bad weather but its well worth the extra few pound. I love Salsa Verde with lamb, the fresh herbs and garlic just works on so many levels. For the salsa verde simply blend together all the ingredients with a food processor and season to taste. If you don’t have a food processor you can chop everything by hand and mix together. After you make the salsa verde it’s always good to taste it and see if it needs any tweaking. Next to the lamb chops…. Season your lamb and rub them with oil, then with a hot frying pan sear the lambs chops on both sides until you have a nice golden brown colour on them. Put the chops under the grilled for a few extra minutes to heat them through. I prefer my lamb chops cook medium and it doesn’t take much time under the grill to achieve this but if you like lamb done a bit more then grill them a little longer. After removing from the grill allow a few minutes resting time and the cover with the salsa verde and enjoy!

Book Review

The Orphan Master’s Son – By Adam Johnson An epic novel and a thrilling literary discovery, The Orphan Master’s Sonfollows a young man’s journey through the icy waters, dark tunnels, and eerie spy

chambers of the world’s most mysterious dictatorship, North Korea. Pak Jun Do is the haunted son of a lost mother—a singer “stolen” to Pyongyang—and an influential father who runs Long Tomorrows, a work camp for orphans. There the boy is given his first taste of power, picking which orphans eat first and which will be lent out for manual labour. Recognized for his loyalty

Adam Johnson

and keen instincts, Jun Do comes to the attention of superiors in the state, rises in the ranks, and starts on a road from which there will be no return. Considering himself “a humble citizen of the greatest nation in the world,” Jun Do becomes a professional kidnapper who must navigate the shifting rules, arbitrary violence, and baffling demands of his Korean overlords in order to stay alive. Driven to the absolute limit of what any human being could endure, he boldly takes on the treacherous role of rival to Kim Jong Il in an attempt to save the woman he loves, Sun Moon, a legendary actress “so pure, she didn’t know what starving people looked like.” Part breathless thriller, part story of innocence lost, part story

of romantic love, The Orphan Master’s Son is also a riveting portrait of a world heretofore hidden from view: a North Korea rife with hunger, corruption, and casual cruelty but also camaraderie, stolen moments of beauty, and love. This very long, very dark, and highly imaginative work by Adam Johnson forces upon the reader a series of distasteful sensations, only a few of which are horror, fury, hatred, injustice, and revenge. But by the end, one also experiences hope, compassion, sincerity, integrity, and love. Thoughts surface, submerge, roil in the mind during the days spent reading this huge novel, leaving one as drained and unsettled after a session with it as if one had “eaten bitterness.” A towering literary achievement, The Orphan Master’s Son ushers Adam Johnson into the small group of today’s greatest writers.

The ‘slimming season’ arrives A local slimming expert has revealed that summer is officially “the best motivation for losing weight”, after a survey* found that most people consider it to be their most successful slimming season. Janice Tracey, Consultant and Area Manager for Slimming World, says that a National Slimming Survey shows that summer is the best time to slim for more than one in three people – three times as many as for spring and 10 times as many as for autumn and winter*. Now Janice is urging local people who are worried about their weight to embrace the slimming season by joining one of the many Slimming World groups all over the city and county. “We’ve got such an exciting summer planned and we can’t wait to get started,” says Janice, who also runs groups every Monday at 3.30, 5.30 and 7.30 at Da Vinci’s and every Tuesday at

9.30am in Da Vinci’s. “We’ll have competitions, and challenges galore in all our groups, and, we’ll be doing everything we can this slimming season to get fit for the summer and have fun along the way. “Our survey shows that nearly half of women and one in five men dread the idea of wearing a swimming costume on the beach**, but losing a bit of weight is a great confidence booster. “Not only is summer a time to enjoy ourselves and it’s the best season to lose weight too. The combination of great value fresh summer produce and warmer weather (yes it is coming) that gets you outside and active means that, with the right support, successful weight loss is easier than at other times of the year.” “When it comes to losing weight it’s all about making a commitment and getting support from people who really understand

how you feel, who can share practical ideas and information, and keep you motivated to succeed. That’s what Slimming World’s group support is all about. And the best news is that you don’t ever need to go hungry and nothing’s off the menu either. With 12 weeks to go until the end of June and the school holidays, anyone who commits to one of our 12-week summer countdown packages, pays for 10 weeks and will get 2 free weeks (saving £10) and will be giving themselves a much better chance of success having made that 100% commitment – so you save ££s and lose lbs”. We welcome anyone who’d like to find out more to come along to a group and see why, with Slimming World, losing weight doesn’t have to mean losing out.” To find out more about any group in the area contact Janice 0n 07933124779 or check out www.slimmingworld.com.

Audi A3 Sportback

Sporty, versatile and functional - Audi presented the new A3 Sportback. The compact five-door model with the spacious luggage compartment is groundbreakingly light thanks to ultra lightweight technology. The engines are powerful and highly efficient. The infotainment with the intuitive connect technology and the driver assistance systems available in the new Audi A3 Sportback set new standards in the premium compact segment. The overall design language concentrates on the essentials, with each individual design element making a confident aesthetic statement. A lightweight car is a prerequisite for sportiness and efficiency. ultra lightweight technology from Audi reduces the weight of the new Audi A3 Sportback by as much as 90 kilograms (198.42 lb) compared with the previous version. Equipped with the 1.4 TFSI engine, the five-door model has a curb weight (without

driver) of just 1,205 kilograms (2,656.57 lb). Hot-shaped steels are used in the occupant cell of the new A3 Sportback to reduce the weight. The complete occupant cell is 37 kilograms (81.57 lb) lighter overall than in the previous model. Significant weight reductions were also achieved in the interior and with the engines. Audi, worldwide pioneer in lightweight construction, has reversed the weight spiral and once again set a new record. The front end is low; the roof arch spans a dome that extends beyond the subtle roof spoiler to the muscular tail end. The design with the three side windows is taut, with every detail precise and expressive. The large wheel wells underscore the sporty aspirations of the new Audi A3 Sportback. The distinctive, Stone Gray single-frame grille with the angled upper corners is the distinguishing element at the front of the vehicle. Its horizontal slats and the Audi rings are highlight-

ed three-dimensionally. The flat headlights are works of art and give the new Audi A3 Sportback a determined gaze. Full LED headlights will be offered at a later time. The interior of the new A3 Sportback is elegant, airy and cleanly designed. It carries over the dynamics of the exterior. The instrument panel with its curving front is slim and low. Together with the center console oriented toward the driver, it appears to float slightly. Large, round air nozzles in jet design, the elegant user interface panel for the climate control system and sculpturally styled trim set the tone - with their polish they bring the quality of the full-size class into the new Audi A3 Sportback. The seats and steering wheels are new developments, and the car's user controls are clear and intuitive - as they are in every Audi. The compact five-door model offers a generous luggage capacity of between 380 and 1,220 liters (13.42 and 43.08 cu ft).

North West Saturday Morning League The league titles in all three divisions of the Rathmor Motors Pre MOT Centre North West Saturday Morning League went right down to the wire this season but there is still plenty of action to come as all the cup competitions have to be sorted yet.

Premier division In the Premier Division Phoenix Swifts and Westbank United were neck and neck going in to the last game of the season and both sides needed to win to force a play off for the title but Westbank United slipped up badly as they could only manage a draw against Clifton Villa while Phoenix Swifts had to beat Rosemount which the duly did and that result handed the title to Phoenix Swifts who have already collected the Champions League title this season along with the Gilfillan Cup and on Saturday last the beat Westbank United in the semi finals of the Blue Riband Cup setting up a final showdown with Creggan Swifts as they attempt to make it a clean sweep of major trophies this season and although other clubs in the past have managed to do this they never had the Champions League back in the day so Phoenix Swifts are on the verge on making history in The SML. At the other end of the spectrum Clooney and Drumahoe have been relegated to the Championship.

In the Championship Benbradagh Colts were without doubt the most consistent side in this division and they deservedly lifted the title in this division and Strabane Athletic will join them in the Premier Division next season as they finished well clear in second place. Tamnaherin Celtic who made a very good start to the season finished the season with enough games in hand to catch the leaders but they folded in the run in and that ended their chances. At the bottom of the table Foyle Athletic finished bottom of the pile having not won a game all season and they will be joined in the First Division next season by Gransha Institute.

First division In the First Division Collon Celtic won the title with a game to spare and they will be joined in the Championship next season by Tristar who managed to get promoted as they beat Art Deco in a play off for promotion and both sides will need to strengthen next season if they are to have an impact in the Championship. At the bottom of the table Culmore finished second from bottom but they finished eight points clear of the bottom side Collegians and word on the grapevine is that they may not be competing in The SML next season.

Cup competitions The Blue Riband Cup final will see Phoenix Swifts and Creggan Swifts go head to head in the final as Phoenix Swifts managed to beat Westbank United 3-1 in their semi final and Creggan had to do it the hard way as they had to come from behind twice in the semi final against Brandywell Celtic to book their slot in the cup final. The Supplementary Cup saw the quarter finals played on Wednesday night last and Foyle Athletic, Art Deco, Newton Heath, Culmore, Gransha Institute, Tamnaherin Celtic, Olympic FC and Oxford United all played to try and make it through to the semi final stages and those games will be played on

Saturday 27th April all with a 10.30 kick off. The O’Bryan Cup also gets underway on Saturday but with the draw for that competition depending on how some teams fare in the quarter finals of the supplementary Cup there is just too many permutations to get in to. Any club wishing to be considered to take part next season in The SML should have their applications in with the League Secretary very quickly if they wish to be considered. Any clubs that wish to amend any of the rules of the association or who wish to make a proposal should have this done before Monday 29th April by means of recorded delivery to the League Secretary . The address for the the League Secretary can be found in your handbook.

Forthcoming Fixtures; Wednesday 24th April 2013; Supplementary Cup quarter finals; (G) Foyle Athletic v Art Deco; (H) Newton Heath v Culmore; (I) Gransha Institute v Tamnaherin Celtic (Riverside Stadium); (J) Olympic FC v Oxford United;

Saturday 27th April 2013; Supplementary Cup Semi Finals; (K) Winners of (I) v Winners of (H); (L) Winners of (G) v Winners of (J);

City Colts CITY COLTS – 1

A hard fought victory has kept City Colts season alive as they march into a Matt Morrison cup final. With difficult weather conditions, Colts managed to squeeze past a determined BBOB side. In a scrappy opening to the match neither side looked threatening with both teams battling it out in midfield. However BBOB slowly began to gain the upper with Colts soaking up a lot of pressure, giving BBOB an early corner which was headed over. BBOB continued to expose Colts’ weakness at set plays

BBOB – 0

and crosses throughout the rest of the first half. The pressure on Colts’ defence was intensifying as BBOB’s stranglehold of the first half was increasing, using the wind to their advantage. Chance after chance for BBOB came and went begging from numerous crosses and corners, how the ball wasn’t put in the back of the net is anyone’s guess. A great save from Colts keeper Brian Clyde to deny BBOB to tip over a left volley on the edge of the Colts box was BBOB’s best chance of the first half.

Soaking up a lot of pressure, Colts caught BBOB sleeping at the back to break the deadlock with a fine counter-attack, which saw Pete Breslin’s terrific effort lob the stranded BBOB keeper to make it 1-0 midway through the first half. Taking the lead seen City Colts move up a gear were they looked threatening every time they went forward but their defence frailties were still on display as BBOB kept up the pressure. All of BBOB’s possession and pressure amounted to nothing as Colts went in at half time with a slender 1-0 advan-

march on By RORY MOONEY tage. Second half As the weather conditions worsened so too did the match. With no real clear cut chances to speak of in the first 15 minutes of the half, until BBOB almost equalised from a free kick on the left flank with a glancing header flying agonisingly wide past Colts’ far post. As the second half progressed neither side looked like they were going score. With the minutes counting down into the final third of the match, both sides woke up and produced a spirited finish.

Colts substitute’s Eoghan Moore and Kevin McGowan both missed golden one on one chances with the BBOB keeper to put the game beyond BBOB. Tensions began to boil over with some hard and nasty tackles as BBOB pressed for that elusive equaliser. However all of BBOB’s pressure came to no avail as City Colts defended well to close out a tough match for both teams. Colt’s will face a tough test in the final as the face Ballykelly, following their 6-0 demolition of Magherafelt Reds, last Thursday.
