Northwest groups enjoy grants windfall By RORY MOONEY
A project supporting adults recovering from mental illness in the Derry is sharing in a grants windfall from the Big Lottery Fund’s ‘Awards for All’ programme. Action Mental Health is one of four groups in the North West awarded funding totalling over £33,000 from the programme as part of a grants roll-out of £647,422 to 83 groups across Northern Ireland. The organisation has been awarded a grant of £9,915 to improve the training and job opportunities they offer local people recovering for mental illness by refurbishing the IT centre in their New Horizons suite in the city and buying equipment. “We provide practical training, personal development courses and social opportunities for adults who are recovering from mental illness,” said Service Manager Michael Harkin. “The service is currently used by 145 people in Derry City and County Londonderry. As part of our programme of support, we offer people training to enhance their quality of life, boost their confidence and self worth and enable the process of getting back into education or finding employment. “Our IT suite, based in our New Horizons Centre in Springtown Industrial Estate, is a state-of-the-art facility for people who want to learn more about IT and business administration, keep in touch with friends and family, learn new skills and get back into the world of work.” Newbuildings Senior Citizens’ Group
has also been awarded £9,240 to run a range of courses, talks and trips for its members, many of whom are isolated older people. Fiona Nelson, Older People’s Project Co-ordinator, explained that the group works in partnership with Clooney Hall, and together they give older people the opportunity to attend a luncheon club twice a week. “Many of these older people live in isolated rural areas, and often their visit to the club is their only outing in a week,” she said. “We provide a hot meal at a low cost, and the funding will allow us to run workshops on things like healthy eating and mental health awareness and activities like armchair aerobics and computer training. We are also planning a 12 week gardening summer scheme for older people. “Without the services we offer older people would not be able to access these activities. They often live a very sedentary lifestyle and this group encourages them to become more active by getting them involved in all sorts of activities.” The Glen Area Parent & Toddler Group is set to receive £10,000. The group will use the grant to buy new baby and toddler play equipment and will also run a range of events and activities. Bonds Street Community Association was also awarded £4,056, for works to improve the opportunities of local people, will use the grant to run events and outings for local residents in the Bonds Street area.

Ballymagroarty bomb hoax condemned By RORY MOONEY
A hoax bomb left in the Ballymagroarty area of the city on Saturday night, has been condemned. Residents were forced out of their homes close to where the hoax bomb was left on the Aileach Road. Police evacuated residents in the immediate area when the alarm was raised at 10pm on Saturday night. A controlled explosion was carried out on a gas canister before police declaring the alert a hoax. Residents were able to return to their homes around 5.30 am, Sunday morning. SDLP Councillor John Boyle condemned those responsible for leaving the elaborate hoax. Councillor Boyle said: "Once again we have witnessed individuals disrupting lives and heaping misery on the people of Ballymagroarty. There can be no justification for such activity and I ask those responsible to explain or at least think about what the rational was behind their behaviour. “This was a particularly sinister looking device and it simply succeeded in driving local people out of their homes on a cold and blustery night. Those responsible must surely have considered that the potential effect of their actions would be to inconvenience and frighten the local community. If they hadn't thought about that simple possibility then they are beyond mindless and as such it must be assumed that they revel in wrecking other people’s lives."

St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival events unveiled Details of the 2013 St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival have been unveiled. The St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival has become one of the largest festival’s in the City’s event calendar bringing thousands of people to the city centre to view the spectacular colour and vibrancy of the community Carnival parade. Speaking at the launch, Mayor Councillor Kevin Campbell said, “Since its inception, the St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival has grown from a one day civic event into an extended festival focusing on cultural identity and shared celebration. Collaboration with artists and cultural organisations has developed quality programming, which has been mirrored by the volume of people who come out to experience the celebrations year on year.” This year’s Carnival parade is set to bring together a mixture of new and seasoned community group performances, carnival groups, tradition and contemporary dance groups and pipe bands along the 2km route. The programme includes street theatre, music, crafts, drama, dancing, storytelling, discussion and debate so there is something for everyone to enjoy over the weekend’s celebrations. Also incorporated within the pro-
gramme are details of events taking place throughout the city to celebrate Irish Language Week 2013 and in particular Lá na Gaeilge (Irish Language Day) which is a celebration of Irish language and culture to mark the end of Irish Language Week 2013. Events will include an outdoor céilí, traditional Irish music sessions, performances by children from the local Gaelscoileanna, an Irish language information point and arts & crafts activities for families. This year’s Carnival Parade will commence on its usual route leaving Derry City Council Car Park at 2pm travelling towards the city where displays from Celtic and Greek mythology will blend with the rhythms and colours of Africa, India and South America to create a high octane and colourful pulsating start to the Carnival. Then the City’s life long association with water will be celebrated with its display of Underwater Magic featuring mermaids, sea creatures and other aquatic surprises. As the carnival progresses participants travel back in time to the 70’s and the Undertones Punk Rock the Boat section which will then blend seamlessly to the Sky Journey where the weathermakers, exotic birds and flying machines will swoop and soar to complete the
parade in a spectacular finale. Visitors and locals can browse the Walled City Market in Guildhall Square on the 16th & 17th and experience the ultimate specialty retailing experience right in the heart of the city featuring a mouth watering array of foods plus a delightful display of arts, crafts, unique gifts and much more. Over the weekend street theatre will be present throughout and creating an energetic buzz around the city centre and Ebrington Barracks. A kid’s carnival, iconic photographic Portrait of the City film material looped live from the Live Screen at Waterloo place and entertainment trail will also be incorporated in the programme which includes as always the events of Seachtain na Gaeilge (Irish Language Week). The programme is now available at venues across the city and online through the official website www.derrycity.gov.uk/ stpatricksday.

Figures reveal burglary stats Shocking figures have revealed that half of all break-ins in Derry are due to unlocked doors and windows. Figures released by the PSNI have shown that in up to half of all reported domestic burglaries, the burglar has gained access to a property through open, unlocked windows or doors. To combat the rise of the burglaries police in Foyle have launched an antiburglary campaign aimed at reminding people to close, check and lock all doors and windows. Foyle Area Commander, Chief Inspector Jon Burrows explained: “On a daily basis, police officers respond to calls for help from people who have been burgled, so we are very much aware of the effect these incidents can cause. “We are particularly concerned that in nearly half of all reported domestic burglaries, entry has been gained by open or insecure windows and doors. Householders have an important responsibility to follow the simple safety advice highlighted in the advertisements – by closing, locking and checking all windows and doors before leaving your home, or going to bed at night.” “By taking these simple steps, they will create a huge deterrent to an opportunistic thief. By working together with the public, we will make life difficult for burglars and create a safer Northern Ireland for everyone. Poster advertisements will appear in key locations across Northern Ireland, supported by advertisements in buses and a series of radio advertisements.

Spider Kelly’s boxing trophy up for sale
Tralee Roses’ to visit Derry
By RORY MOONEY
Contestants in this year’s Rose of Tralee are set to the visit Derry this summer. The annual ‘Rose Tour’ will be sending all of this year’s Roses’ to the city in August to coincide with the All Ireland Fleadh. At last week’s meeting of Derry City Council’s Development Committee it was revealed, that the organisers of the Rose of Tralee asked Derry City Council for £2,000 to cover the cost of the visit to the city. The proposal received unanimous backing from councillors in approving the request. SDLP Councillor Brenda Stevenson and Chair of the Development Committee backed the re-
A prestige’s trophy awarded to one of Derry’s greatest boxing heroes could be finding its way back to the city after more than 60 years. The Lord Lonsdale trophy was awarded to Jimmy ‘Spider’ Kelly in 1938 is set to be auctioned next week in England. However it was revealed at last week’s council’s Development Committee that moves were under to purchase the trophy, which is being auctioned by Bonhams of London for the guide price of between £2,000 and £3,000. Jimmy Kelly was awarded the tro-
phy following his victory over Penny Caplan to win the British Empire featherweight title. The trophy has since been in private ownership for the past 60 years. At the meeting, councillors were told that Derry City Council’s Museum Service will be making a bid for the trophy. Welcoming the move, SDLP councillor John Boyle said that his party would “obviously” be very supportive of the move and hoped that council would be successful in securing “this very valuable piece of sporting history for the city”. Cllr Boyle also heaped praise on both Jimmy Kelly and his son Billy, also known as ‘Spider’, describing both boxers as “trailblazers” and the “forebearers of the likes of Charlie Nash and John Duddy”. Sinn Fein’s Eric McGinley also gave his backing for the move by council. Meanwhile, Councillors also gave their backing to seek Department of Social Development (DSD) funding, for the erection of a plinth at the top of Waterloo Street, to commemorate the Kelly’s’ successes in both winning the British Empire crown.

quest, saying that the Rose Tour would boost tourism in the city. “The amount requested is a drop in the ocean in terms of the exposure the city will get out of the visit.” Cllr Stevenson’s party colleague, Cllr Martin Reilly also welcomed the Tour coming to Derry, saying that it was a, “fantastic opportunity for the city”. Sinn Fein’s Barney O’Hagan said that the cost of the visit was “minimal” in terms of exposure that the city will receive. DUP Cllr, Drew Thompson also welcomed and backed the ‘Rose Tour’. Concerns over Magee childcare facilities closure Concerns over the closure of nursery day-care provisions in Magee have been raised. SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has expressed his concern that the day-care nursery provision in Magee campus which is facing closure has not been subject to in-depth efficiency studies into its future, and has urged the University to seek alternative routes to modernising the service and addressing financial issues. Mr Ramsey said: “I have been contacted by a number of constituents, some staff at Magee in particular who have been told that the day-care provision is to be closed, and I am obviously concerned that this is the result of financial pressures. Job losses at Magee at a time when public representatives are pushing for the expansion of student places and the University's plans for physical expansion do not, in my opinion, add up.” Mr Ramsey confirmed that he has sought a meeting a meeting with Magee Provost Deirdre Heenan over the closure of the day-care provision. “I am informed by sources that childcare needs to be
Police to Clamp Down on Illegal Gaming Machines

Police in Derry have said that they will be clamping down on businesses that facilitate illegal gaming on their premises. The warning follows a number of complaints from members of the public regarding gaming machines in the City. Gaming machines are not permitted in fast food outlets, video hire shops, shops and taxi offices. They are permitted in registered clubs, pubs, amusement arcades and bingo clubs. Area Commander Chief Inspector Jon Burrows said: "Excuses won't be accepted. Local retailers should be fully aware of the legislation surrounding gaming machines. If not, they should make it their business to know. "A number of planned operations are expected to take place over the next few months and officers will actively be inspecting premises. I suggest that retailers use this time to get their business in order otherwise they could face prosecution."
modernised to adapt to the changing profile of who needs childcare, and at what times. That is something I believe merits further scrutiny by the authorities in the University, and to that end I have sought a meeting with the Provost to discuss this, and I have been in contact with key staff to seek details about the financial situation of the day-care facility in order to ascertain where I can be of assistance in saving jobs and continuing the service. The SDLP MLA also said that with the proposed expansion of the Magee campus childcare provision was an essential component of attracting students to Derry. “When we are successful in having extra students allocated to Magee, and when the physical expansion takes place through the Northland Road, surely childcare provision will be a key tenet for prospective students who have children, in choosing Magee.” A University of Ulster spokesperson said that crèches at the Magee and Jordanstown campuses are to close from July 31. The spokesperson continued
to say that two factors have been crucial in the making of this decision, in that the facilities have been running at a deficit of over £100,000 per year and that the university could not financially sustain the provision. "Students are minority users of the crèches. Of the 25,000 registered students at the University, just 23 use these crèches. This is not a sustainable position,” The spokesperson explained. "We understand that for users and staff this will not be a popular decision, and regret that there will be some inconvenience in that, existing users will have to make alternative childcare arrangements. "However, it will be almost six months before the crèches close at the end of the academic year, and eight months until students begun the new academic year in late September 2013. Our Student Support staff are available to help students at Magee and Jordanstown find alternative childcare providers, and to that end we are compiling a register of suitable alternative providers.”

Gas heating installation Sinn Féin Councillor for the Greater Shantallow area, Tony Hassan, has welcomed news from the Housing Executive that homes in Carnhill, Brookdale and Bloomfield park will be getting Gas Central Heating installed in the next few weeks. Cllr Hassan said: “Housing Executive tenants who have soiled fuel or Economy 7 heating will receive new gas central heating, this is a good news story for the people who live in this area and who been
waiting for new heating for a long time. “The Housing Executive in Derry told me this week that work is to start in a few weeks time and that this year will see a end to Economy 7 heating in all House Executive homes in the Collon district area. “As local councillor for this area I welcome this news and would ask the Housing Executive in the Derry City Council area to do away with Economy 7 Heating in all areas of the city this financial year.”

Nurture funding for two Derry schools Two Derry primary schools have received funding for specialist nurture units to help pupils with emotional difficulties. Holy Family Primary School, Ballymagroarty and St Brigid’s Primary School, Carnhill, together with eight other schools across the North will benefit from a £1.1 million funding boost for the specialist units, announced by Education Minister, John O’Dowd, last week. The new nurture units will cater for small groups of children in the school environment and help address barriers to learning arising from social, emotional or behavioural difficulties. Mr O’Dowd said: “Nurture units can play a key role in tackling underachievement early in a child’s life by providing targeted support to where it is most needed.” The announcement was welcomed by Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Maeve
McLaughlin who said it will help children in disadvantaged areas. “I am delighted that Holy Family and St. Brigid’s Primary Schools have been included in today’s announcement,” Ms McLaughlin said. “I have been engaging with the minister for some time on the crucial role that nurture units can play and recently invited him to Derry to see the benefits first-hand. “Today’s announcement is a firm commitment to the principle of nurture and early intervention for children in greatest need. It is also in addition to the funding for 20 new nurture units announced by the First and Deputy First Ministers in October. “Nurture units play a key role in tackling underachievement early in a child’s life by providing targeted support and I would like to congratulate the Minister for the leadership he has shown on this issue,” she said.

In 2011 the results of an independent survey carried out showed the Foyle Cup generates almost 10,000 bed nights in the course of the tournament. “The report also indicated that for the duration of the 2011 Foyle Cup it generated a return of between £6.74 (primary host economy) and

Lotto windfall for local community group A Derry community organisation will be able to carry out energy saving improvements to its venue and save money during the recession thanks to a grants windfall from the Big Lottery Fund. Eglinton Community Ltd has been awarded a grant of £40,233 from the Big Lottery Fund’s ‘Energy Efficient Venues’ programme. The programme, which is now closed for applications, offers Lottery cash to local groups to carry out improvements to their community venues so they make savings on their heating and lighting costs and cut down on their spending. Although the building on Main Street is just over ten years old, manager Debbie Caulfield said checks they carried out showed heating, insulation and lighting all needed a overhaul to make the hall more energy efficient.
Plentiful Free Parking
“We are putting in a much more efficient heating and ventilation system,” said Debbie. “We also plan to use sky tunnels to bring natural light into the corridors that are very dark, which means we don’t have to have the lights on in these areas all the time. “We will change to energy efficient lighting and will be reducing the number of lights we have from 15 to nine.” Plans also include a heat recovery ventilation system, control valves on heating and radiators, installation of a new boiler and new external doors which will include disability access. “The centre is used by a wide range of people and community groups,” said Debbie. “We run activities for senior citizens, disability services, yoga, dancing, spin classes, boxing and youth and children’s activities.
“This work will save us money and will make the building warmer and more comfortable for everyone who uses it. They money we save on our energy bills will go straight back into developing and improving our services and activities for local people.” Frank Hewitt, the Big Lottery Fund’s NI Chair said: “The Energy Efficient Venues programme supports community organisations to carry out energy efficiency improvements to their venues that help them make savings during this difficult period of recession, and have a positive effect on the environment. “This has been a very popular programme and we have awarded grants to a range of organisations across Northern Ireland. Organisations should be aware that the programme is now closed for applications.”

Tributes pour in Specsavers, Derry/Londonderry, for PSNI officer celebrates 18 years in business By RORY MOONEY
Tributes have poured in following the tragic death of Constable Philippa Reynolds. Constable Reynolds was tragically killed when a stolen Land Cruiser colluded with an unmarked police car in which Constable Reynolds was a back seat passenger, last week. Leading the tributes were the First and Deputy First Minister’s, Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness, who described the news of the crash as “devastating”. Foyle District Commander, Chief Superintendent Stephen Cargin described Constable Reynolds as a beautiful and bubbly enthusiastic officer, “who was in the prime of her life”. Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership (DPCSP) Chairman Councillor Thomas Conway offered his condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Constable Phillippa Reynolds. Speaking on the tragic loss Cllr Conway stated: "As Chair of the DPCSP I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Constable Reynolds. This was a devastating loss of life of a young officer who was on a rou-
tine patrol in the city.” SDLP MP Mark Durkan has expressed his shock and sadness at the death of Constable Reynolds: "My sympathies go out to her family and friends at this very difficult time, as they struggle to come to terms with this tragic news. My thoughts are also with the wider police family, not least those who were on duty alongside her, who have lost both a friend and a colleague." Sinn Fein MLA and vice-chair of the Justice Committee Raymond McCartney offered condolences to the Reynolds family and urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the PSNI. Tributes were also paid to the Constable Reynolds in the Assembly. Meanwhile, two men have appeared in court charged with the death of the 27 year old policewomen. The two men, Shane Christopher Frane, 25, and Conor Tyrone Clarence, 23, both of the Simon Community hostel on Bonds Hill, Derry, were remanded in custody and face a total of 14 charges.

City maintenance what you need to know about it Explain the background to the set up of the business and the motivation for set up?
When couples separate in the context of family breakdown very often the parent who remains with the children is left financially worse off and if the other parent leaves the family home and refuses to help to maintain the children of the family the parent with care of the children is entitled to seek child maintenance from the absentee parent. Even if the parents have never actually lived together if you have a child with someone you are entitled to seek child maintenance from them to help support their child. There is no need to necessarily go through the government agency in relation to working out child maintenance and it is possible for families to come to their own private arrangement in relation to it. This course of action has

Railway line set to open ahead of schedule It was been announced that the upgraded Derry to Coleraine railway line is expected to be finished ahead of schedule. The announcement was made by Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy. The upgraded line project cost around £30 million and will enable rail services to resume between Coleraine and Derry. Danny Kennedy said: “The railway line was due to open in April but I was keen for the line to be open in time for the Easter holidays and, in particular, to provide transport for all
those people attending the key events at the UK City of Culture in Londonderry. “This phase of the project will allow nine return journeys per day on the line and secures the long-term future of the route. I also understand that following a consultation with local stakeholders Translink will be ensuring travellers can arrive in Londonderry before 9am when services are restored. “Translink have advised me that the scheme is making excellent progress and that they are hopeful that it will now
be open to the general public on March 24. This is excellent news and I want to congratulate Translink and their contractors McLaughlin and Harvey and McCann BAM for their efforts.” The first phase of the project involved the relaying of the end sections of the line, re-railing and renewing the centre section, completing essential bridge works and track safety improvements. The second phase which will involve re-signalling works and a new passing loop is planned for 2015.
Apprentice star set for city ‘Enterprise Week’ Karen Brady, the first woman to run a top flight soccer team in England and the current Vice Chair West Ham United board, will visit Derry next month during the city’s first ever Enterprise Week. Ms Brady will be a keynote speaker at the City Hotel on the opening day of a week long programme of events being run by Derry City Council, targeting local companies keen to boost performance over the coming year. In more recent times, Ms Brady has found stardom as one of Alan Sugar’s trusted advisors through her appearance on the hit BBC reality show, ‘The Apprentice’. Mayor Kevin Campbell: “I am delighted to welcome her to the city during what is such an exciting year for Derry, and I have no doubt that she will be an inspiration to anyone either starting a new venture or hoping to regenerate their business. “In turn we hope that Karen will take away the positive message that Derry is a city that is well and truly open for business throughout 2013.” Business Officer with Derry City Council Danielle McNally, said seats for the event were already filling up. “We are
extremely excited to be holding the city’s first ever Enterprise Week, and from the interest we have received so far, it is clear that local businesses are extremely keen to maximise their potential throughout 2013. We have already been inundated by businesses interested in the Business Opportunities Programme, and Enterprise Week presents another chance for local companies to sign up for some of the skills development workshops and mentoring programmes lined up for the rest of the year.” Invest Northern Ireland’s North West Regional manager, Des Gartland said: “The networks created through Enterprise Week will present an invaluable opportunity for local companies and entrepreneurs hoping to lay foundations for new enterprises, and stimulate sustainable economic growth throughout 2013.” Enterprise Week will run from Monday March 4-8, with a full schedule of talks, workshops, and mentoring sessions aimed at local businesses seeking advice on how to boost business prospects. It is the highlight of the Business Opportunities Programme currently being rolled out by Derry City Council,
Both phases will cost around £50million. This announcement comes at the same time as the Trans European Transport Network (TEN-T) has confirmed that it will be providing EU funding of 1.6M euro towards the project. Turning to the EU funding boost, the Minister said: “I welcome this significant investment from the European Commission, through its Trans European Network Programme, to support the redevelopment of this important link between our two main cities.”

Concerns have been raised whether work will be able to continue at building site in the Glenabbey area of the city following a recent fire. Sinn Féin Councillor Tony Hassan, has said that he hopes that a fire at a builders warehouse at Glenabbey does not delay the construction of 111 new houses in the Skeoge development which is due to start in next month. Councillor Hassan said: “I believe the warehouse at which the fire occurred on Saturday (February 9) night is used by the builders constructing new homes at Skeoge. “The next phase of 111 news houses is due to start in March. I hope this fire in no way delays the new social houses being built.” Councillor Hassan also praised the quick reactions of the fire brigade, who were called out to extinguishing the fire. “The actions of the local Fire Service need to be commended for extinguishing the blaze so quickly.”

With just three weeks to go until the city's first Enterprise Week event, local businesses are already signing up to hear some of the leading industry figures - including top UK business woman Karren Brady - as they reveal the secrets to their success. The jam-packed programme of events was announced this week, featuring an exciting and inspiring line-up of keynote speakers, workshops and networking opportunities to be held over five days, from March 4-8, at venues throughout the city. The event is the highlight of the Business Opportunities Programme run by Derry City Council, and part funded by Invest Northern Ireland and the European Regional Development Fund under the Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for Northern Ireland. Heading the impressive lineup of business gurus on hand to lend their expertise will be Sir Alan Sugar's right hand woman, and West Ham FC Vice Chair, Karen Brady. Just as wellknown for her motivational speaking as her influence in the Apprentice boardroom, Karren will take to the podium to open the week's events, giving a fascinating insight into her rise to the top echelons of
the business world. Also no stranger to the TV cameras is Haydn Insley, popstar turned entrepreneur, who will reveal how he helped establish the UK's first FabLab, supporting small companies and innovators as they source the technology they need to progress from idea to prototype. Locally, a whole plethora of successful leaders from the local business arena will be offering advice on franchising, digital marketing, networking, funding and a whole lot more throughout the week. Monday will feature a series of talks by both established business figures and budding entrepreneurs, who will detail their current ventures for anyone wondering how they should embark on a career in business. The afternoon will see a number of workshops focusing on franchising and social enterprise. On Tuesday the focus shifts to social media, and how it can be effectively used to boost your business, with talks from local experts including Ryan Sharkey, the man behind Facebook phenomenon Joe Derry. Learn how to make friends and influence people at the networking workshops, or visit the social media clinic

Major line-up for technology and music festival PSNI appeals Details of a weeklong technology, media and music festival in Derry have been announced.
Derry’s CultureTECH Festival has announced the first details of its week-long programme of technology, media and music events, which is expected to attract in excess of 30,000 people this September. One of the major home-grown attractions in the City of Culture programme, the festival celebrates the growing digital sector across Northern Ireland with over 100 events throughout the historic city centre. The events announced include; a major industry conference and partner events, delivered in association with the Belfast Media Festival, DANI Awards, Glasgowbury, the University of Ulster, W5 and Teen Tech, amongst others. Festival organiser, Mark Nagurski, said: “CultureTECH was great fun in 2012, but this year’s festival is going to be enormous. We’ve already got nearly 100 sessions pencilled into the programme including some incredible events being hosted by a brilliant line-up of partners. “We’re particularly excited about hosting the Belfast Media Festival’s first trip to the city, bringing Teen Tech to Northern Ireland for the first time and a massive Coder Dojo event with over 500 kids learning to write software code.” Outside of the major events within the programme, the focus shifts to showcasing local talent through
an Open Call for Northern Irish companies, digital artists, filmmakers and musicians. Mark Nagurski explained: “2013 is a unique opportunity for Derry-Londonderry and the rest of Northern Ireland to put our talent on show and while we are absolutely delighted to have so many great events in the programme already, it is the home-grown talent that will turn CultureTECH into something special. “Over the next two months we’re inviting anyone who would like to be part of the festival to submit
their ideas for events – from music gigs to arts exhibitions. We’re committed to making as many of these ideas as we can happen, and if the response is half as good as it’s been in the months since last year’s event, I’m certain we’ll have some really exciting ideas to work with.” Sinead McLaughlin, CEO of the Londonderry Chamber of Commerce said: ‘We are thrilled that CultureTECH will be bigger and better in the City of Culture year. The Chamber took a leading role in developing and staging CultureTECH
last year and we remain fully committed to it. CultureTECH is of enormous importance to the city, both symbolically and practically. It is a festival that brings together cultural enjoyment with entrepreneurial activity. Some of the cultural and technical entrepreneurs who are engaged in CultureTECH will be, we hope, the city’s business leaders of tomorrow.” Registration and ticket information is available now at www. culturetech.co along with further information about the festival and Open Call submission forms.
The Buddhist spiritual leader will be the guest of honour at local charity, Children in Crossfire's event called 'Culture of Compassion' at the Vital Venue in Ebrington. The Dalai Lama, who is a frequent visitor to Derry, last visited the city in 2007
when he attended anniversary celebrations as patron of the Derry charity. Richard Moore, Director of Children in Crossfire, said: "We are thrilled to welcome His Holiness back to Derry. He came to the city six years ago as part of our 10th Anniversary celebrations and has been a dedicated patron of the charity since that time. "We are delighted that people from across North-
ern Ireland and beyond will have an opportunity to see and hear him speak during this City of Culture year," he said. "We know that His Holiness is looking forward to returning to Northern Ireland and we hope to make this visit very special." Tickets for the ‘Culture of Compassion’ are on sale from the Millennium Forum box office.

Police are appealing for information following a number of thefts of animal feeders from across the District over recent months. Police have received reports of the sheep feeders stolen from fields in the Dungiven Road, Feeny and Strabane areas. The feeders are particularly important to the farming community in the approach to lambing season and Police are urging anyone who witnesses suspicious activity or suspicious vehicles to report it to police immediately. Anyone with information should contact their local police on 0845 600 8000 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Police in Derry have thanked the public for their support and assistance with the investigation into the armed robbery that occurred at the Peace Bridge in the City on the evening of Tuesday, February 5. Detective Chief Inspector Garry Eaton praised both the efforts of his officers and the swift actions of members of the public. "I would like to thank everyone who helped us with this investigation which was invaluable to achieving a speedy, quality response and allowing us to make arrests and place suspects before the courts. "This type of crime is rare in our city and I can assure you, we will not tolerate criminals who put the lives of local people in danger or inflict fear in our community." Detective Chief Inspector Eaton said.
Dalai Lama to visit City of Culture venue The Dalai Lama will visit Derry in April as part of the UK City of Culture celebrations.

The couple were not at home at the time of the burglary. Sometime between 3.30pm and 8pm, a house was broken into and ransacked. Extensive damage was caused to the interior of the property. A significant amount of jewellery was stolen, many items of sentimental value. Some of the pieces of jewellery stolen were: A gold and diamond pendant and chain with a distinctive red dot; 9ct diamond cut cross and chain; gold broach with rubies; gold three bar gate bracelet; gold rope link chain; gold stud earrings in a rope/knot design; gold belcher link chain; triangle celtic 'trinity' pendant; scapular pendant and fob engraved with letter 'M' above on double chain; triangle celtic 'trinity' earrings; silver wave design hoop earrings; ladies lorus wrist watch. MP praises young enterprise’s at annual Foyle trade fair SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has praised the initiative and drive of local students after attending the Young Enterprise Annual Foyle Trade Fair in the Foyleside Shopping Centre. Mr Durkan, who met enterprising pupils from throughout Northern Ireland, including his former school in Derry - St Columb’s College - who were selling red roses for Valentine’s Day, said: “This is a great opportunity to give local students the chance to learn about enterprise and commerce. They get a real-life insight into the world and practice of business and clearly enjoy the experience. “It is great to see the students inspired and equipped with new business skills that will enhance their self-confidence and instil important qualities like initiative and drive. The different companies and diversity of products provide encouraging signs of innovation and collaboration. “The students have had the opportunity to put what they have learned in the classroom into practice by creating, promoting and selling a product of their choice. In doing so, this has helped develop their skills and capabilities for enterprise and business.” Mr Durkan said that employers were looking for more than academic grades and that the trade fair was helpful for students to show other skills. “Employers today feel that academic success alone is not enough and they are increasingly looking to students who can demonstrate other skills like team-working, leadership and communication skills. “I am a strong supporter of Young Enterprise which is doing so much to encourage a culture of enterprise in our local students. The enthusiasm of these young business people is the best endorsement of Young Enterprise’s work.”

Access to Services, Grants and Benefits in Rural Areas Project The aim of the MARA project is to improve the health and wellbeing of people living in rural areas by making them aware of, or helping them access, local services, grants or benefits. The first phase of MARA was undertaken in 2010 and brought many benefits to people living in rural areas of Northern Ireland. In some cases, householders increased their income by over £60 a week and others received energy efficiency grants, access to transport and/or access to a wide range of services they were
entitled to. This project will be undertaken in following areas of rural Derry City Council: Hollymount1, Banagher, Claudy1, Enagh2 (Derry), Eglinton1 & Eglinton2 The project is led by the Public Health Agency (PHA), an agency of the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS), which was set up to improve the health and social wellbeing of people in Northern Ireland. The project is funded by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD)
and the PHA. A trained Community Representative can call to households to speak to people and provide help with: Energy Efficiency Grants. Access to Community Transport and a Translink Smart Pass. An Occupational Therapy Assessment. A Home Safety Check. Benefit Entitlements Check. Information and access to a range of local services in your area. They can also ask a family member/friend to be present during the visit if you wish.
Public Appointments Workshop
Interested in a Public Appointment but never dared to apply? Saw them in the paper and thought ‘not for me’? Public Appointments should be representative of the diversity in our society; however women, young people, people from ethnic minority backgrounds and people with a disability continue to be underrepresented. This training event is for anyone who wants to learn more about the role of Public Bodies, how to apply for a Public Appointment and the benefits of getting involved. Eileen Mullan (Strictly Boardroom) and Helen Henderson (Board member of the NI Fisheries and Harbours Authority and past participant of training) will facilitate this practical, interactive and fun workshop. Date: Thursday 28th February Time: 9.45am - 1pm. Venue: Apex Housing Association, Butcher Street, Derry/Londonderry. Vale Centre Craft Fair The Vale Centre in Greysteel will host their next Craft and Gift Fair on Sunday March 3 from 2pm to 5pm. A great event not to be missed!! Come along and see crafters displaying their goods and gifts as they build up a craft Mecca for their customers. Refreshments will be available from Lucille’s kitchen. There will also be music from Drive 105 DJ Raymond O Hara. For the kids there will be balloon modelling, face painting and come along to see Mickey and Minnie Mouse.
According to the most recent Census 2011 the number of people in an informal caring role in Northern Ireland has risen by 16%, but this is thought to be an under estimate. To support these Carers, the Western Trust is running two events in March 2013 to raise awareness and identify hidden carers. The events will offer carers the opportunity to avail of a range of health checks, a taster complimentary therapy and information which will help support them in their caring role. Cathy Magowan, Carers Coordinator for the Western Trust is encouraging everyone who has a caring role to come along to one of the up and coming events saying: “Many people across Northern Ireland provide a caring role for a loved one but don’t recognise themselves as a Carer. Often they see themselves as a mother, father, son, daughter, wife, husband, brother or sister whose role it is to help and support a family member. “A Carer is someone who provides regular and substantial care for a family member, friend or neighbour who is disabled, ill or old and frail. A Carer carries out this role in an unpaid capacity. I would encourage anyone who is Carer to come along and feel supported in their role - these events really do make a difference!” Event is being held on Friday, March 8, 10.30am - 1pm in St Columb’s Park House. For more information contact Carmel Corrigan, Carers Development Worker, Shantallow Health Centre, Racecourse Road, Londonderry BT48 8NL. Greater Shantallow Community Arts “Helping our Young People to make the Right decisions” Greater Shantallow Community Arts are delighted to offer a unique opportunity for schools, youth clubs, community and statutory organisations that work with and care for our young people from right across our city the chance to engage in The Choices Project. The Choices project is an innovative arts led approach to providing young people with the experience, knowledge and understanding of the key issues and the dangers facing them within our communities. The aim is to forearm them with the ability and rationale to make better life choices and to outline the impact and consequences’ of making the wrong choices. We also highlight what that can mean for themselves, their families and the community they live in. The Choices project will help young people to make better choices by utilising a programme of direct issue-based discussions, dialogues and conversations and will take the form of workshops and will feature the use of specifically designed short films and documentaries made by local young people on the issues of suicide, self harm, drug and alcohol abuse as well as dealing with the issues of internet predators and online dan-
gers. The films address these issues in an open and frank way. After viewing the films the issues are explored through the use of an internationally recognised developmental technique of, Positive Action Theatre. Positive Action Theatre which engages participants in dialogue on key issues whilst encouraging and exploring alternative responses to the scenarios portrayed in each film.

Dark Winter – by David Mark Book Review
Dark Winter is David Mark’s debut novel, and very impressive it is. Mark has been a journalist for fifteen years; seven of them spent as crime reporter for The Yorkshire Post, in its Hull office. The word is that it’s taken Mark years to convince a publisher that a crime novel set in Hull, as opposed to London, New York will sell and that publishers, Quercus finally took him on is their credit, as this first novel is strong and compulsively readable. The Dark Winter is set in a bleak wintery Hull, just before Christmas. Mark describes Hull colourfully as, ‘’A city on its arse, fighting recession and deprivation.” The book’s protagonist is DS McAvoy, a gentle giant of a man, deeply devoted to his little family. He is a man of honour and principle, trying to keep his head down in a police department full of resentment, rivalry and lies. It falls
to McAvoy to investigate a serial killer who begins to murder a number of unlikely victims – all of them linked only by the fact that they are all sole survivors of different tragic events from their pasts. These include the only man saved from the wreck of a sinking trawler, a girl who miraculously escaped a massacre in Sierra Leone, and a man who survived a domestic house fire that killed his wife and children. Some of these survivors of horrors past, destined to be murdered by a man in a black balaclava with “wet blue eyes”, seem to be totally innocent. Their dreadful experiences somehow seem to rebound on them, inexplicably. What have they done to deserve such horrors? And why is the man in the balaclava killing them now? DS McAvoy has to find the reason - and the link between these apparently random slayings.
Tightly plotted, The Dark Winter has the perfect hero in McAvoy – a man who is well aware of human frailty, who deeply loves his wife and son, and who would never put convenience before principle. A crime story in the best traditions of American police dramas – yet set in Hull, of all places - the motive for the killings is twisted and complex. It rests on the idea that justice is finite. For every person that miraculously escapes from what seems like an unavoidable, violent death, there will be a reckoning. Yet can it be possible to somehow ‘reverse’ a miracle; a salvation; and replace it with another? Is the deranged killer trying to alter the fabric of reality, playing God to serve his own ends? This conundrum is at the heart of The Dark Winter - a truly original and absorbing debut crime novel. To Hull and back? I hope so! DS McAvoy should be with us for many years and books to come.

Mother’s Day top present tips
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, the City Herald looks at the some of the best presents and ideas to get for your mother. No.10: Flowers
If sending these along to your mom wasn't the first idea that popped into your head, we'd recommend seeing a neurologist. That said, women have an uncanny ability to discern the quality of flowers, so don't think she won't know you opted for the cheapest bouquet you could find. By taking the high road and shelling out for massive bunch of flowers, she'll know you've done something special and show her pleasure by placing them prominently in her home for everyone to see.
No.9: Candles
Loved by women for their flattering, soothing light and mind-clearing aromas, you can never go wrong adding to your mom's candle stockpile. If you opt for this approach, make sure your selection is made from vegetable soy wax like that used in these Pacifica Perfume candles, because they burn better right to the very end.
No.8: Gift Card
In the case of moms who spend the majority of time shopping for others, receiving a gift
card to their favourite shop can often break down their selflessness for a change by giving them the treat to shop for themselves. Don't assume, however, that you can pass this relatively easy gift off without putting some thought into some attractive packaging and a well-written card.
No.7: Gift Basket
Packed with her favourite gourmet foods, and useful tools to make cooking them a real pleasure, a customized gift basket is a very classy gift. However, if you’re really looking to earn good-son brownie points, you should be the one to prepare this gift's goodies for her as an added way to show you care.
No.6: Home Spa Treatment
While celebrating all of her accomplishments as a mother, many women find themselves reflecting on all the time that has passed to get here. By giving the gift of home spa products like this pomegranate salt glow scrub, she can treat herself to a relaxing day at home while marvelling at all she
has accomplished. More importantly, though, her day of home pampering will also give her skin a more youthful appearance akin to the days when she focused on herself and not her kids.
No.5: Home Decor
Men may brush these tokens off as pointless knickknacks, but unique home decor accessories such as a throw are the kinds of gifts that detail-oriented moms love, because they help distinguish and freshen up the sanctuary that is her home.
No.4: Sweet Treats
Unless she's in the extreme minority, your mom will always appreciate sweet treats. Chocolate, of course, is certainly a safe bet, but if you're really looking to impress, sending an edible arrangement of her favourite fruit dipped in chocolate takes this gifting concept from the minor leagues to the pros. Made to be as beautiful as they are tasty, they're also great for sharing when the family gets together.
No.3: Plants
The process of caring for a liv-
ing thing is an instinct that typically stays with moms long after they've kicked you out. To cater to this instinct, give her beautiful greenery she can also tend to. Apart from adding colour and a wonderful fragrance to her home, raising plants doesn’t result in dirty dishes and unmade beds, the way raising you did.
No.2: Perfume
Some mother’s wear perfume every day, while others save it for special occasions. Regardless of what bucket your mom falls into, giving her a bottle of her own favourite fragrance will save her from making a trip to the shop and keep her smelling like she prefers. If you’re an inattentive son and don't know what she likes, giving her a bottle of the classic Chanel No. 5 might just save your bacon.

No.1: Massage and Spa Treatment
1
Mother's Day gifts are all about making mothers feel good, and nothing fulfils that goal more directly than giving your mother a massage and spa treatment. After a lifetime of making you feel good when you needed it the most, treating her to a day of relaxation is one small way of paying her back.

City of Culture Events
2013
With the City of Culture celebrations in full swing, the City Herald takes a look at some of the exciting events that will be taking place in the city over the next few weeks. Celebration of Scouting Each year Scouting Ireland observes Founders Day, the birthday of Robert Baden-Powell the founder of Scouting. In 2013, as part of their Founders Day celebrations local scouting groups are hosting a weekend of events in Derry~Londonderry for members of the scouting movement to mark their cultural identity, history, beliefs and demonstrate the skills and art of scouting. Some 2,500 young people aged 16-18 from a range of backgrounds and other associated organisations will come together in a scouting celebration. This will also allow members of the public to become more aware of the ethos behind scouting and observe the scouting method through participation and observation of planned activities such as guest lectures, scouting skills displays and parades. Date: February 22 – 24. Where: Guildhall / St Columb’s Park.

Tommy Tiernan: Stray Sod “Brilliant & life-affirming, Tommy Tiernan actually makes you proud to be Irish.” The Irish Independent claimed. “He has the vocabulary of a poet, the soul of a maverick & the passion of an evangelist.” ‘Stray Sod’ is also the title of Celtic comedy warrior Tommy Tiernan’s latest show. Uplifting, joyous, inspirational and with the light touch of an eejit, Tommy is a man who leaves nothing in the dressing room.
To be at a Tommy Tiernan show is to be part of a movement, where the only authority is yourself, and by the time this supremely gifted and selfless comic almost literally self immolates with exertion at the end of his show, having given you his all, you know you have been in the hands of a comic genius. This latest show doesn’t have all the answers but one thing for sure is that no one will have to leave the gig with their jacket on back-to-front. Date: Wednesday February 27 - Saturday March 2. Time: 8:00pm Venue: Millennium Forum. Guinness World Record Attempt Ebrington Square will reverberate under the weight of 4,000 Annies dancing their way into the Guinness Book of Records. Organised by the Foyle School of Speech and Drama in association with the Foyle Hospice, it will be the largest co-ordinated song and dance routine ever, and if it lasts longer than three minutes and 14 seconds goes

Cathair Chultúir Hofesh Shechter – Political Mother “Effortlessly hip, endlessly energetic, exhilarating, sexy and loud enough to burst your eardrums” Daily Telegraph. Political Mother: Derry~Londonderry Uncut is Shechter’s big-picture vision of oppression, survival, resistance and existence. It’s a massive slab of heavy rock riffs, booming drums, fast-cut cinematic lighting and committed, inspired dancing. Images of mass hysteria and mindless obedience are interspersed with brief moments of tenderness and humanity. Hofesh Shechter is recognised as one of the UK’s most exciting contemporary artists and now he brings his world-wide suc-
cess to Derry~Londonderry in a unique re-imagining. Political Mother: Derry~Londonderry Uncut draws upon the city’s rich musical culture, featuring a live band including 20 young local musicians performing alongside international musicians and dancers of his world renowned ensemble, Hofesh Shechter Company. Inspired by Political Mother: Derry~Londonderry Uncut, the Company will also create five new choreographies in collaboration with specially selected local dance groups. Living with Eczema 2013 Eczema is one of the most prevalent skin problems we see around us today and for many people it is “How do I live with eczema?” rather than “How can I cure eczema?” The boundary between a diagnosis of “dry skin” and “eczema” is blurred and many of the strategies used by eczema sufferers can be very helpful for those of us who are plagued by dry, itchy skin and discomfort. Eczema requiring medical intervention is a condition all on its own but many more people than in the past complain of some degree of eczema/dry skin. So many bathrooms now sport the large size bottles of some whole body moisturizer or another even though some of these may not be helping the problem. Whether the increase in these complaints is due to the dry, centrally heated and/or air conditioned environments we live in now, to the higher standards of personal hygiene we re-
quire than in the past, with more frequent bathing or to the use of stronger skin cleansers such as the detergents found in shower gels and liquid washes no one can say for sure, but I feel that it is probably linked to all three to some extent. First and foremost, check what is in your skin care products. Many people have absolutely no idea what they are using and that includes people who really need to keep an eye on their skincare regime. SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) SLES, (sodium laureth sulfate) artificial fragrances and colours are all potent causes of skin reactions so look carefully at the back of your bottles. It can be surprising what ingredients different ranges contain.
cently and was astonished to find that while, as they claim, they don’t contain fragrances or colours, and they contain absolutely everything else, from SLS to parabens. Their Kind to Skin Nourishing Body Wash shower product has 31 ingredients, including both SLS and SLES and propylparaben as a preservative. Although most people will not have any negative reaction to these artificial ingredients, if you have dry or sensitive skin these detergents are a potential trigger for dryness or allergy which you need to be aware of. Only you will find what suits your skin and you really need to take a bit of time actually checking the products before you use them just to be sure. The improvement after you have made even a simple change can be dramatic.
Not so Simple after all? For example I was doing a review of the Simple brand of skincare products re-

tion for those living with eczema and I strongly recommend anyone who wants to improve their approach to their eczema to look at their website and think about getting their handbooks. They do very good booklets for parents of children with atopic eczema, teens and adults with eczema and cover every aspect of those changes you can make which will help you live your life more enjoyably and comfortably, from information on how to find out what triggers your eczema to managing your eczema day by day. My own family cannot use anything with these artificial additives and have to stick to only the plant based cleansers and moisturisers that we have created at Marble Hill to but we only found this out after many years of trial and error and this is why I developed my own brand of truly natural products... Many dermatologists recommend using products
which contain fewer ingredients, reducing the chance of a bad reaction but, as the Eczema Society says, you have to find the emollients (moisturisers) that suit your lifestyle. Eliminating obvious triggers is a good start but only you can find the right combination. For example, many new mothers who have had no previous problems with their skin find that their hands are sore, dry and cracked once they start caring for their baby simply as a result of frequent washing with liquid hand washes and it is a simple matter to swap these drying cleansers for something less severe, natural bar soap for example, which cleanses just as well but is less inclined to strip oils from their skin. Even though there are really no cures, for eczema, there are ways to help live with it.

Other voices heroes By RORY MOONEY
Derry rock band Little Bear have taken the music world by storm since stealing the show at the Glassworks during the recording of Other Voices. One of Derry’s best kept musical secrets, Little Bear have been wowing the Derry music scene since they formed over a year ago. Consisting of; Steven McCool (bass and vocals), Mark O’Doherty (drums), Ryan Griffiths (guitar) and Conor Mason (piano), Little Bear have had a meteoric rise in the last year, from being a cult Derry band to Other Voices headliners. Lead singer and bass player Steven McCool said that it has been one of the busiest years of his life with consistent performing and writing new material; however the Ballymagroarty man admitted he wouldn’t have had it any other way. “We’ve been really busy travelling up and down from Dublin all year,” Steven explained. “It’s been really mad for us because we’ve been working so hard to make a success of the band, so it’s nice to know that all that hard work hasn’t been for nothing and that it’s starting to pay off for us.” Attracting a huge cult following over the past year, Little Bear’s gig in St.

When we’re under the weather and feeling rotten, Healthy eating can often be the last thing on our mind. Colds and flu in particular can lead to comfortfooditus (symptoms which can include filling up on stodge-filled snacks!) Sticking with your weight loss campaign and, if you a Slimming World member, continuing to Food Optimise throughout your illness can bring amazing benefits. Free Foods are naturally packed with nutritious vitamins to help you fight the symptoms of a nasty bug, plus you’ll have the fantastic feeling of remaining in control of your weight loss (enough to make anyone feel better!) It can be easy to sabotage our own slimming campaign when we’ve got a stinking cold because let’s face it – it’s a time when we feel downright sorry for ourselves (and rightly so!) Feeling down can affect our decisions about food and make us choose snacks that give us instant gratification (ie ‘sugar hits’) rather than foods that are better in the long term. With Free Foods and Healthy Extras there’s a perfect happy medium. Food Optimising encourages you to fill up on piles of delicious, comforting and nutritious food. You’ll be sticking to the old adage of ‘feed-
ing a cold’ to make you feel better in no time! Fresh fruit will fill you up and it’ll help fight your flu with all the vitamin C contained within. Citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits are a great choice – chop with lots of grapes, melon and strawberries for a nutritious fruit salad to pick on while you’re tucked up in bed. Carbohydrates such as pasta, rice and potatoes (All free foods on Slimming World’s Extra Easy Plan) provide a perfect comfort to us when we’re ill. Fill up on lots of gorgeous meals such as cheese and potato pie (mashed potato with your Healthy Extra cheese) with baked beans. Mmmm! Fresh ginger is a natural antioxidant and pain reliever so is particularly good for coughs and sore throats. Add sliced ginger to your stir fries or make a ginger tea using grated ginger soaked in boiling water. Filling up on fluids such as water and sugar-free fruit squash will keep you hydrated and help flush out the toxins from your bug. The strong flavour of peppermint tea helps clear your airways, plus you can’t beat the good old cold remedy of hot water, honey (1 level tsp is 1 Syn) and lemon. If you fancy turning it into a hot toddy 25ml whisky is 2½ Syns!
Soup certainly helps comfort us when we have a cold and often goes down well when we can’t face tucking into a meal. Hearty lentil and vegetable soup is a delicious chunky soup that’s full of natural decongestants such as onion and garlic. Eating all those pungent veggies will help you keep your cold to yourself too (no one will want to get too close!) You’ve probably experienced a runny nose when eating a very hot curry or chilli – that’s because the spicy foods act as decongestants. Fill up on those dishes with that spicy kick such as chilli con carne or even chicken vindaloo. Cough medicine, throat lozenges, honey and lemon sachet drinks and other medication can help us feel better at this time and there’s no reason why you can’t take them whilst Food Optimising. If you do decide to count the Syns during your flu bug, two cough/throat lozenges are 1½ Syns and two level teaspoons of cough syrup is 1½ Syns. Don’t be hard on yourself at this time. The most important thing is that you feel better as soon as possible. Eating Free Foods and Healthy Extras will certainly help this process and get your immune system back to tip top shape once again!

Augustine’s on the historic City walls during the Other Voices Music Trail, was to prove to be a launch pad for what was to come next. “The St Augustine’s gig was brilliant for us,” admitted Steven. “I couldn’t believe the amount of people that turned up for it. I had to ring people to get up there as soon as they could because of the amount of people that said they were going. It was great for us that so many people did come and see us. “Philip King, the executive producer of Other Voices was there, with a few others from the Other Voices team and he saw us play but at the time we didn’t think anything of it. “We just played the gig and went to the bar after.” Steven joked. Following their success gig in St. Augustine’s, Steven admits that the band decided to retire to the bar for a well deserved drink and to soak up some of the other acts that were playing on the Other Voices bill, when they got the word that they were to replace Two Door Cinema Club. “We we’re sat in the Gweedore having a few pints when my phone rang. It was a southern number and we got really excited. Myself and Ryan ran into the toilets so we could hear and
thankfully it was Other Voices asking us if we’d step in for Two Door Cinema Club and me and Ryan just started high fiving each other. We couldn’t believe it.” Despite being in Little Bear for just over a year Steven, Mark and Ryan are no strangers to each other having been in previous bands together over the past seven years. With Conor Mason, an acclaimed solo artist in his own right, added to the line-up, Steven admits that despite being in a band with top class musicians and friends, the Other Voices gig could have been more daunting than what it already was, with such acts as Neil Hannon, Beth Orton and Marina and the Diamonds all performing on the bill. “Me, Mark and Ryan have been playing in bands with each other for years now and Conor has really added a dynamic to the sound of the band, he really filled the sound out. “We know each other so well, so it’s easier having people that you’re comfortable playing with up there along with you. I know what they’re going to do before they do it at times.” Performing in Derry’s newest musical hub, the Glassworks, it was a venue the band wanted to play for a long
time. The former church provided an especially ample setting for Little Bear’s form of haunting rock. “It was really surreal walking out onto the stage to play,” Steven said. “We were stood at the side of the stage watching Aiden Gillen calling out our name and I realised that I had about a second to pull myself together and get on with it. “I managed to get it together and the reaction we got was unreal. The people of Derry/Londonderry were brilliant. It was crazy to think that most of the people there were to see us, especially with the likes of Beth Orton on stage. “Bronagh Gallagher and a few of the crew were even crying watching us.” The sky is the limit now for Little Bear as they prepare to release their debut single on April 15. Usually set in Dingle Co, Kerry, Other Voices moved north as the City of Culture celebrations, in what would proved to be an aspired decision for Little Bear as Philip King, Other Voices executive producer, watched the band perform in their packed out St. Augustine’s performance. “I saw Little Bear play in St. Augustine’s on the walls of Derry, there were

queues outside to see them. There, without doubt, is a band of the future.” Philip King said. In cultural terms, Other Voices undoubtedly raised the profile of Derry’s musical talent, like Little Bear, SOAK and multi-talented singer-songwriter Kevin Brown. However in economic terms the Other Voices weekend proved a major success with local businesses, who reported a large spike in takings. Billy Campbell, owner of Mason’s Bar
and the lease-holder of The Glassworks said: “The weekend couldn’t have worked out better for us. Our normal trade doubled over the three days. “I’ve been in touch with a number of bars around the town and they were all packed as well – they are astounded at the level of trade. It’s been great to have The Glassworks associated with something like Other Voices and now we aim to have it as a venue for many more events to come in the future.”

Beechwood’s finest beauty salon!
Louise Mc Guinness Proprietor The latest addition to the local Beauty sector, namely "Beauty By Louise & Co" has opened in Beechwood Avenue, Derry. Headed by Louise Mc Guinness, the Beauty Salon offers a diverse range of services including: Hairdressing, Beauty, Make Up artistry, Spray Tan & Chiropody. Louise has 10 years experience under her belt, having begun her career on a part-time basis whilst studying to gain her qualifications. Louise specialises in the field of Beauty and Lash Extensions for which she also undertook an Advanced Masterclass. She is the first Beautician locally to qualify as an HD Brow Technician for which she had to travel to London. After being an employee and gaining extensive experience for a number of years, this ambitious young lady decided almost 3 years ago to
become self employed and rented a Beauty Room at the Healthy Living Centre in Creggan. Louise quickly built up her own clientele and a professional reputation. Business grew to such an extent that she had to increase her daily working hours to meet the demand. The natural progression of this was to open up her own premises and expand. "The opportunity to open my own business presented itself when these premises became available at Beechwood Avenue," commented Louise. "The building was lying vacant but thanks to the vision of my architectural consultant, Liam Nelis and the skill of the contractor JJ Joinery & Construction, an amazing transformation resulted. Together they carried out a first class job and I am absolutely delighted with the finished product."

Café Del Mondo head chef Stephen Forbes serves up a treat for the readers of The Herald with some truly excellent cuisine. This dish doesn’t require a lot of time to make; having cooked new potatoes in my fridge is always half the battle. Sea trout is delicious but the dish will work well with rainbow trout or even a bit of salmon.
What you’ll need: 2 decent portions of sea trout fillets 10 new potatoes (already boiled, cooled and sliced) A good handful of garden peas 50g butter Olive oil Sea salt & black pepper 1 lemon Cook the rice according to packet instructions, I would recommend having your hollandaise made before the cooking of the sea trout. Season the trout and set aside, put 2 nonstick frying pans onto the heat and when it’s nice and hot add some olive oil. Place the two trout fillets skin side down into one of the frying pans. You want to get the skin on the trout nice and crispy so keep an eye on it. Flip the trout over when the skin becomes golden brown and crispy and then add the half the butter and lemon juice. In the separate frying pan simultaneously add olive oil and add your sliced potatoes, fry the potatoes on both sides then add your garden peas, add the rest add the butter and lemon juice and season to taste.
For the hollandaise: 500ml white wine vinegar 1 tbsp peppercorns Bunch lavender 3 large free-range egg yolks 200ml melted and skimmed unsalted butter Squeeze lemon juice Boil the vinegar together with peppercorns and lavender, reduce by half. Strain and reserve. Boil a large pan of water, then reduce to a simmer. Using a large balloon whisk, beat together the yolks and 2 tsp of the reduced wine vinegar in a heatproof bowl that fits snugly over the pan. Beat vigorously until the mixture forms a foam, but make sure that it doesn’t get too hot. To prevent the sauce from overheating, take it on and off the heat while you whisk, scraping around the sides with a plastic spatula. The aim is to achieve a golden, airy foam which forms ribbons when the whisk is lifted. Whisk in a small ladle of the warmed butter, a little at a time, then return the bowl over a gentle heat to cook a little more. Remove from the heat again and whisk in another ladle of butter. Repeat until all the butter is incorporated and you have a texture as thick as mayonnaise. Finally, whisk in lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste plus a little warm water from the pan if the mixture is too thick.

David Meade Appearing At The Waterfoot Hotel March 2nd David Meade's skills have been described as "jaw-dropping" by the Daily Mirror and "mind-boggling" by the BBC. Fast on the heels of his successful BBC show David returns to Derry-Londonderry where he was educated at Magee University to perform at The Waterfoot Hotel on Saturday 2nd March. This will be a night with a difference which includes a five course meal and music with the Hitmen Band after David’s amazing show for just £35 per person. David has a very quick fire and friendly delivery which is often amusing on its own, but while he's raising a smile or getting a giggle, David's brain is quickly working to gather as much of the information as possible from the signs and signals that your body is giving away. Which means that David is able to read your mind and correctly find out your pin number or a secret password, a picture you might be thinking of, or just about anything he wants. And while one part of you will think "how on earth...?" the other part of you will laughing too hard to notice how spooky David's skills are. Trad Talent Search for Fleadh 2013
Organisers of this year’s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Derry are on the lookout for the next big star of the traditional / folk scene. Bands, duos and singers from the UK and Ireland are being asked to enter a one off trad talent search (An Ré Nua – The New Era) that will earn them a spot performing at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, sharing a bill with masters of the trade like Flook, Beoga, Cara Dillon, Tim Edey & Brendan Power, and Dervish. Eibhlín Ní Dhochartaigh, chairperson of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann said: ‘I’m really excited about this new project. It’s the
perfect way to gear the city up for the feast of great music we will have in August, but it also gives young musicians a fantastic platform for furthering a career in music.’ The winners from each of the three categories will record their music for a new compilation album called An Ré Nua 2013, showcasing the high standard of contemporary trad/folk music from young musicians. They will will also receive a mastercopy of their music as an EP. Odhrán Ó Maoláin, the project co-ordinator, says the opportunity is too good to refuse: ‘The
eyes of the cultural sector are on Derry this year, making it the ideal location for the An Ré Nua project. Acts that take part should expect maximum exposure to the folk music industry and loads of media interest.’ The competition is open to participants in the UK and Ireland and there is no age limit. New emerging musical acts are advised not to miss out on this exciting new project which could be the perfect launch pad for a career in the music industry. Mini Hatchback – Eats asphalt for breakfast!
More power, less fuel consumption, tonnes of mile-wide smiles. The original MINI hatchback that everyone knows and loves is bursting with get-upand-go and full to the brim with the latest smart technology.
Limitless fun, uncompromising design: the MINI One has a black grille with a chrome surround, with equally distinctive black side scuttles with integrated orange indicators. Along with the bodycoloured roof and the black matt exterior mirror covers, this ensures an unmistakable appearance.
Bringing up the rear: the innovative LED rear lights. Safety Various sensors recognise dangers before they actually arise, allowing you to react in good time. In tricky situations, you are supported by the intelligent suspension and braking systems. Optimum braking behaviour in any situation is ensured by four disc brakes, an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) as

Now in its 33rd year, the annual Derry District Sports Awards honoured the cream of Derry’s sporting crop, on Friday night. Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill, who was guest of honour at the event, encouraged the sporting stars of the future to take responsibility for their own carers and he even poked fun at the

North West Saturday Morning League As we approach the business end of the season in the Rathmor Motors Pre MOT Centre North West Saturday Morning League things are starting to heat up in the race for the title. In the Premier Division Westbank United lead the way and results last weekend certainly went in their favour as they now sit five points clear at the top of the table with only five league games left to play. Clifton Villa are currently in second place but they did themselves no favours last week as they threw away 3-1 lead to draw 4-4 with Du Pont. Brandywell Celtic sit tin third p[lace but they also saw their title chances diminish at the weekend as they were beaten 2-1 by Rosemount. Phoenix Swifts are in fourth place but they have a game in hand over the leaders but even if they were to win that game in hand they would still be five points of the pace. Creggan Swifts, Du Pont and Foyle Harps fill next three places and they should be playing Premiership football next season but Rosemount and Clooney could be joining Drumahoe in the Championship next season unless they can improve their position. In the Championship Benbradagh Colts lead the way and they are odds on to collect the title here as Strabane Athletic who are in second place have five points to find with just four league games remaining. Tamnaherin Celtic are in third place and they can pip Strabane to the promotion spot as they have three games in hand over Strabane but they were hammered last week by Newton Heath and noting is a certainty in this division. In the First Division the title race is red hot as anyone of four teams are in with chance of winning the title and the race here could go right to the wire with Tristar, Art Deco and Collon Celtic among the favorites to lift the title. A quick loo at the games that are scheuduled for this weekend.
Blue Riband Cup Greysteel Celtic v Clooney (Lisnagelvin No 3) First Division side Greysteel will have their work cut out for them here as they take on Premier Division side Clooney and although Clooney have been finding life difficult in the top flight this season they may have to much experience for Greysteel and for that reason alone they should be able to make through to the next round of this competition.
to be involved in the closing stages of the league programme and they should really win here to keep their chances alive. Drumahoe v Clifton Villa (YMCA) Drumahoe are sitting at the foot of the table not having taken one single point from their ten outings so far and they will have their work cut out for them here as they take on a Villa side that still has an outside chance of winning the title. Drumahoe held Westbank in the first half of their game last week but they eventually went down 8-1 and the score could be something similar here. Rosemount v Westbank United (Prehen No 1) Rosemount have been playing out of their skin in recent games and they should have at least taken a point in their game with Villa but they showed great character last week in coming from a goal down to beat Brandywell Celtic. There are at least three clubs that would be delighted if they were to get a result here but they will have their work cut out for them as they take on the league leaders Westbank United. A win here for Westbank could very much hand them the title on a plate but they really need to win here to stop the chasing pack in their tracks. Du Pont v Creggan Swifts (Du Pont) Du Pont came from 3-1 down last week to lead Villa 4-3 before conceding late in the game to allow Villa to snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat and they will have to work just as hard here again in the morning if they are to beat one of the most improving sides in the Premiership. Creggan Swifts have been performing well in recent games and it will take a good side to stop them in their tracks and if they can get back to action playing the way they have been they should have the measure of Du Pont in this game.
Championship
Premier Division
Strabane Athletic v Sion Swifts (Strabane) Strbane Athletic became the first side to beat Benbradagh in the league last week and they need to put in the same performance here in the morning if they wish to keep the pressure on the league leaders. Sion also had a good win last week but that was against Foyle Athletic and they will not find this game as easy. Sion will no doubt give it their best shot but it is likely they will fall well short in this game.
Foyle Harps v Phoenix Swifts (St Columbs No 3) Foyle Harps look to be safe for this season and they should be playing their football in the Premiership next season but although they may not be involved in the title race they may have a big say in where the title goes. Phoenix swifts are five points behind the leaders with a game in hand and they need to win this game if they are
Newton Heath v Foyle Athletic (Prehen No 6) Newton Heath had an excellent wion last week out in Lettershandoney as they beat Tamnaherin 4-1 on their own patch and they face the bottom club here in this game and should come away with the desired result. Foyle have struggled all season and that struggle may continue here as Newton Heath should win this game with ease.
Olympic FC v Benbradagh Colts (Showground’s) Olympic FC returned to action last week after a lengthy lay off and they were beaten by Gransha Institute but they showed in their second half performance that they are a capable side and they could be winning games again soon. They face a tough test here this weekend as they take on the league leaders who were beaten for the first time in the league this season last week and they will be expected to return to winning ways here. A win for Olympic would see them move clear of the drop zone but a defeat could leave them in some trouble as the season draws to a close.
First Division Culmore v Art Deco (Culmore) Culmore had a credible draw last week against Oakleaf but they will find things a little more difficult this week as they face an Art Deco side that are still well in the title race. Culmore are a young side that will run at their opponents all day but they lack that little bit of experience and Art Deco should have enough craft to exploit that and for that reason alone they should be able to stay in the hunt in the title race. Collon Celtic v Tristar (Templemore Central) Three points separate these two sides at the top of the table wit Tristar sitting top of the table at present and a defeat here for Collon Celtic would see any chance they had of winning the title quickly disappear. This should be an excellent game with Tristar being a young side that love to attack and although they have some experience in their side they may not be as experienced as Collon Celtic. This should be a cracking contest and one that could go either way but Tristar are playing some great football at present and they may just about edge it here. HML v Collegians (Leafair) HML are having their best season ever and they are well in the hunt here as they sit only three points behind the leaders with a game in hand and they take on a Collegians side that have conceded 64 goals in twelve league games this season and that statistic alone would not give them much of a chance coming in to this game. Collegians will try and make it difficult for HML but they face an uphill battle here. Oxford United v Oakleaf Celtic (Thornhill) Oxford United managed to get their biggest win of the season in their last game as they beat Collegians 7-2 but they face another tough test here as they face a Oakleaf side that have some experience in their side and with Oxford fielding a young side at present that may cause them some difficulties. Both these sides are more than capable of winning here but Oxford on the back of a very good win last week may just have the edge here.

Derry draw Drogheda in Setanta showdown

Upcoming sporting events Ulster GAA Historical Symposium
By RORY MOONEY
Derry City have drawn Drogheda United to set up a home tie showdown in the quarter finals of the Setanta Cup. The Candystripes will be hoping to improve on last season’s Setanta Cup campaign having narrowly been beating in last year’s final to north Belfast side, Crusaders. Mick Cooke’s men will be going into the quarter final at the Brandywell brimming with confidence following their 8-2 aggregate demolition of Portadown. However, the Candystripes will be confident after the signing of striker, Mark Griffin following a long running transfer saga to sign the former Dundalk man. City’s pre-season preparations seem to be back on track after a successful training camp in Monaghan over the weekend. Declan Devine’s men host a Northern Ireland amateur team, made up of current Irish Leauge Championship players, in the Brandywell tomorrow (Wednesday) night, followed by a trip to Ballybofey to face fierce Northwest rivals, Finn Harps this Sunday. With their pre-season under way the Brandywell men face local rivals Institute next Tuesday night at the Riverside Stadium, before their crucial Setanta Cup showdown with Drogheda United on March 4. International call-ups Meanwhile, Derry young guns, Barry McNamee, Michael Duffy and Conor Tourish have all been called up to Republic of Ireland duty. The highly rated McNamee will link up with Noel King’s Under-21 squad which will play an Ireland Amateur squad at the AUL Complex in Dublin this Saturday. Under-21 boss King said that it was opportunity for League of Ireland players to push themselves into contention for places

in the squad. “If we can produce as many players for the U21 squad from this group I will be extremely pleased. There is no better way to judge players then when you are working with them directly. “The opportunities are always there for Airtricity League players to push their way into the U21 squad and I’m looking forward to this game.” King said. Paddy Slevin and Conor Tourish have been called into Paul Doolan’s Undeer-18 squad to face Wales in an international challenge next week. Two other Derry youngsters, Conor Barr and Ryan Harkin, will be in action for the Northern Ireland Under-18 schools’ squad in Dungannon to face Scotland.

Over a two day period, the historical symposium of the Ulster GAA will examine the importance and relevance of the GAA in today’s society while linking its past and core values back to historical events across the Associations 127 years of existence. The main elements of the first half day of the event will include a “talk-show” style event with leading GAA figures. The second day will see a range of academics and other high profile speakers presenting papers and workshops on the GAA’s historical and cultural significance to Ireland and beyond.
Derry select vs Austria – Boxing
Brooke Park Leisure Centre will serve up a treat of quality local boxing when a Derry select side will square off against an Austrian team on the weekend of March 9-10. With a mixed membership of over 60 young people, St Mary’s Amateur Boxing Club based at St Mary’s Youth Centre in Creggan has had many years of success, producing Ulster and All Ireland Champions. Several members are Irish internationals. This special event will feature a selection of the best Derry fighters against an Austrian select. Admission to the event is £5.
