Valentine’s at Derry’s Trafalgar Square
A love chapel, a light show, live music and theatre will be among the attractions at Ebrington barracks this Valentine’s night. The five-acre main square which is larger is Trafalgar Square in London and Donegall Square in Belfast is also being touted as one of the main attractions for next year’s city of culture celebrations. “We have taken this former parade ground and turned it into a public square. We have built a public space which is designated to be as multi-functional as possible,” said a spokesman for the event. “It will be the largest public space in the Derry with excellent links to the cityside. It has been purposely designed to allow for concerts and large-scale performances.” On June 21 this year the area will host the cultural Olympiad, linked to the Olympics in London, and actor Jude Law will be among stars helping the celebrations along. There are several buildings on site which date back to the 1800s and a light show will be projected onto them throughout the evening. Organisers say there is capacity for up to 15,000 people at the square and rumor has it that Snow Patrol will be making an appearance later in the year.

NEWS Calling all Derry schools for Action Cancer
Leading charity Action Cancer and independent retail group Centra are calling on nurseries, playgroups, schools and colleges in Derry to enter their tenth annual Health Action Awards. Action Cancer’s Health Promotion Manager Emily Magrath challenged Derry schools and colleges to gain recognition for their health promotion projects by taking part in the unique awards scheme; “The Health Action awards are now a central element of our schools programme, which has delivered health promotion sessions to almost 420,000 young people, encouraging them to develop a healthier lifestyle. As 40 per cent of cancers can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle it’s vital that we involve as many children as possible from nursery age upwards. “Every year we are impressed to see excellent examples of cancer prevention, healthy eating and exercise projects in playgroups, nurseries, primary and secondary schools and colleges across the country. With Centra’s support we will again acknowledge the best of these projects and would encourage all schools to consider entering the awards this year.” Past winners have been rewarded for introducing healthy breakfast and lunch options, promoting increased fruit and water consumption, extra-curricular exercise programmes and cancer awareness initiatives. There are Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards for nursery, primary and secondary educational establishments. Schools and colleges wishing to enter the awards can get an entry form from Action Cancer by contacting the charity on 028 9080 3344 or online at www.actioncancer.
org A prize of £200, to be spent on school equipment, will be awarded to the highest scoring pre-school or nursery, as well as each of the top scoring primary schools, secondary schools or colleges in each of the five Education and Library Boards. An overall cash prize of £400 will go to the school that demonstrates the best improvement on the previous year. The awards form part of Action Cancer’s Health Action programme for schools, which has been supported by Centra since 2003. Centra retailers across Northern Ireland promote Health Action roadshows to local schools and fundraise for Action Cancer. To date more than £700,000 has been donated to the programme. Nikki McDowell from Centra added; “Health Action is the only programme of its kind in Northern Ireland; developed for local schools by Action Cancer and Centra to help young people stay healthy, so they can reduce their risk of ill-health in later life. Centra is extremely proud to support Action Cancer in this important work.” Completed Health Action Award forms must be returned to Action Cancer by Friday April 27 and successful schools will be notified at the end of the academic year. The Health Action programme is part of Action Cancer’s preventative work, which aims to save lives by reducing future incidences of cancer and increasing early detection. Action Cancer works to save lives and support people affected by cancer in Northern Ireland through health promotion, breast screening (40-49 and 70+), men’s MOT health checks, research and support services.

Derry girl Aoife Grant is making big waves in the modelling world Culmore Road girl Aoife Grant is certainly making waves after she has had success followed by more success since winning the Face of Ireland competition last year. Gorgeous Aoife has since represented Ireland at a number of world beauty pageants such as Miss America Dream, UK and Europe held in November, the Miss Swimsuit World Finals held in Mexico in December, and the Tropic Beauty World Finals held in the MGM Las Vegas in January. And the year ahead is even busier for Aoife as she is modelling at the Monaco Gran Prix, Cannes Film festival and representing Ireland at the Miss Global International in Jamaica in September. But despite having the body of Elle McPherson, Aoife insists that she was a shy teenager who was more into sport that makeup and fashion. “I’ve only just learned about this whole hair and makeup thing. I was always into sport at school,” said the University of Ulster graduate. Aoife has a degree in Sports Science and also works as a consultant for a slimming product company as well as everything else. “I travel the world to pageants but I wasn’t into the party scene at all. I didn’t party for my 18th birthday because I had a European tournament for the Northern Irish netball team.” Aoife’s boyfriend isn’t short in the looks department either as Neil Anderson is the current Mr Northern Ireland. Roma McCluskey ,Kevin McCarthy and Conor Kiely from Lumen Christi who are Oxbridge bound this October. This year three students from Lumen Christi are Oxbridge bound after they were successful in the fiercely competitive interviews and entrance exams. Kevin McCarthy, Roma McCluskey and Conor Kiely will begin their studies in October 2012. Kevin, who has been given an offer to read Natural Sciences at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge while Roma McCluskey, will study medicine at Downing College, Cambridge. Conor Kiely, who received an offer from St. Edmund Hall at Oxford University, to read English, said that he felt fortunate to have been offered a place. “I feel very lucky to have been given the opportu-
nity to study at Oxford. I felt very privileged to be invited for an interview with so many brilliant and dedicated applicants. To receive an offer is an even bigger privilege and it is an experience that I’ll want to make the most of.” The trio expressed their gratitude for the assistance and support they received from the teachers during the application process as well as for all the help and teaching they were given throughout their time at the college. The college’s principal, Mr Patrick O Doherty, said the pupils’ success was “a wonderful achievement and fully deserved. Kevin, Roma and Conor can be justly proud of themselves – the college certainly is.”
Hospital to Strabane bus needed There have been calls for the introduction of a direct bus service between Strabane and Derry’s Altnagelvin Hospital. Sinn Féin West Tyrone MLA Michaela Boyle says such a service would cut down on the lengthy journey people from Strabane are currently forced to undertake when attending or visiting Altnagelvin. “It is a logistical and time consuming ordeal for the many people who have to travel by bus from Strabane to Altnagelvin hospital on a daily or frequent basis- with passengers having firstly to go to the Foyle Street Depot in Derry and then having
to wait to get the connecting service to Altnagelvin and the same on the return journey,” she says. Ms Boyle met with senior Translink officials last Friday to discuss the introduction of a direct route. “I am heartened that the senior Translink officials did not dismiss the request and have undertaken to examine the potential of establishing a direct service from the town to the hospital,” she says. The MLA says there is a feeling in the town that “the critical mass of passengers exists to make a direct service from the town to Altnagelvin viable.”

One of Derry’s best loved charity shops will be reopening following its recent makeover. There will be a giveaway for the first 50 customers to visit the new-look Red Cross shop. The shop will be formally opened by Julia Stevenson, Red Cross stalwart and former Centre Organiser of the Derry Red Cross branch. Mrs Stevenson, who is from Dungiven, founded the very first Red Cross shop in the town, on a site which sat where the Foyleside Shopping Centre is now located. The present shop on the Diamond opened in September 1990 and has been one of the Red Cross’ best performing shops across the UK over the past 20 years.
Cashless parking to hit Derry
Cashless parking has proved such a success in Belfast where it was tried out last year; it’ll now be rolled out to Derry in the coming months. Omagh, Lisburn and Newry will also be trying out paying for their parking with cards and not cash. The feedback has been “excellent” according to the Department for Transport and means that parking can be extended without having to run back to the car and top up a ticket. The system works by making a very short phone call at the start and end of a parking session. Payment is taken on either a credit or debit card at the end of the month and customers can register for the service either online or over the phone. When registered, one phone call to starts parking and another stops it. Because you are only charged for the time you actually use – the scheme should save you money, even taking the 15p administration fee into account. Plus traffic attendants will know that you have paid for your ticket by entering your vehicle registration into the live database on their handheld devices. Nearly forty thousand calls have been recorded since the schemes introduction last February.
Raising a child costs more than £200k
The average cost of raising a child to the age of 21, that’s assuming the go to university, has rising to around £218,000 a report by a leading insurance firm states. Education, childcare and food account for the biggest costs so far says Liverpool based LV= in its ‘Cost of a Child’ study. The report warns that parents can also expect a hike in the near future and says that the overall bill has risen by 55 per cent since the study was first done in 2003. Back then it cost £140,000 to raise a child to adulthood. The latest figure also shows a 3.3 per cent rise since last year when the cost totalled around £213,000. The failure of consumer savings to make dividends coupled with the increased cost of living and the bleak employment outlook for many means that many families will be facing financial crisis in the coming decade.

NEWS PEOPLE living in the Park Avenue area are being asked to have their say on proposals for a new one-way traffic system in the area. Sinn Féin councillor Maeve McLaughlin has called on resident to participate in the process as DRD Roads Service consuls on proposals. Residents have been complaining for many years that the bottle neck of traffic which forms at the junction of Academy Road and Park Avenue meaning that traffic cannot pass in either direction. “Traffic congestion along Park Avenue has had an impact on the quality of life of local residents and businesses for many years. Because of the geography of the area it’s clear that finding a solution that could help alleviate the problems there with traffic congestion is not going to be
easy,” said Ms McLaughlin. The councillor said her party carried out a survey in the area to assess residents’ views on the traffic situation. “We did a door-to-door in the streets along Park Avenue and got a petition signed calling but as yet nothing has been resolved. “I have been lobbying with local residents for some time to try and find solutions to the traffic problems in Park Avenue. Roads Service have now put forward proposals for a one-way system in the area. These are draft proposals and are of course subject to public consultation,” she said. “A copy of the proposals can be viewed in Glenview Community Centre, Cedar Street and I would encourage residents to have their say. And do not hesitate to get in contact me if I can be of any further assistance,” she said.

A record £379 million has been paid out to UK consumers in just one month as people continue to make the most of the ruling on payment protection insurance (PPI). The sum which relates to November last year is a huge increase on the £268 million paid out in October of 2011. This had previously been the highest figure since the payouts began about a year ago.
Around 16 firms across the UK are vying for their share of the bounty and are trying to persuade consumers to reclaim what may have been mis sold PPI. Originally PPI was meant to be taken in case of long term illness while employed but mis selling of the financial aid became widespread and a court ruling dictated that financial institutions must oay it back.

Good news afoot for Derry shoppers? It’s just possible that it may not be all doom and gloom for Derry shoppers and shop owners too as the rumour that Swedish retailing giant H&M may be coming to town gathers pace. If the rumour is true it will go a long way to offsetting negative news about closures at Foyleside which despite losing tenants in recent months, with the closure of Evans and La Senza, actually enjoyed a record Christmas with more than 350,000 customers stepping over the threshold. H&M has become a firm favourite with fashionistas and budget shop-
pers alike and its popularity has meant designers such as Stella McCartney, Viktor & Rolf, Roberto Cavalli and more recently- Donatella Versace herself, have produced all collections with high street price tags. Versace’s recent collection saw bargain hunters queued out over night to bag a designer gem. Kylie and Madonna have also endorsed the brand which has spread like wild fire across Europe in the last 10 years. Officially H&M has said that it plans to open 275 stores worldwide in the coming year.

You are now entering Free Derry Most famous for its 1960s Tin Tin statue with a slot for pennies, Derry City Independent Hostel has opted to depend solely on the kindness of strangers in the coming weeks. Backpackers will now be able to stay for free at the Hostel until Easter week and the offer will resume for the winter season. “There’s no catch,” says Kylie Barsdell, owner of Derry City Independent Hostel on Great James Street. “Backpackers can stay from two to four nights free until Easter week and then through the winter season right up until St Patrick’s Day next year,” he says. Instead of paying the usual rates for accommodation, the hostel owner says payment will be left to the discretion of backpackers. “We will give everyone the chance to can ‘tip’ us what they think the hostel was worth to them as a contribution to running costs. But if they decide that they cannot make any contribution, that’s up to them. It will be free. ” “Hostel occupancy rates in Ireland have almost halved in the last four years and many have closed down or gone part time,” Kyle says. “We saw that we had a lot of free beds in the winter months and decided that we might as well be filling the beds if we are open, in a bid to get more people to come to Derry.” The move has also been tried by a restaurant in Melbourne where diners eat for free and leave what they thought the meal was worth.
Tea at Waterfoot for NSPCC Back packers can enjoy free accommodation until easter week.
STAFF and customers at the Waterfoot Hotel will be putting their feet up and getting out the tea and biscuits when they take a well-earned tea-break and ‘Stop for Tea’ in aid of NSPCC Foyle on Wednesday February 29. They are asking everyone to get involved and make this year’s ‘leap’ day count by joining friends, family or work colleagues in a cuppa wherever you choose, while raising money to support NSPCC services in Foyle. Everyone who registers to take part will be entered into a draw for an overnight stay for two, courtesy of the Waterfoot Hotel. The Stop for Tea campaign aims to get people to organise their own tea break/coffee morning at home or at work by inviting their friends and/or work colleagues to join them for some refreshments and treats whilst at the same time raising money to support the NSPCC’s drive to end cruelty to children in Foyle. All you need to do is pour the tea, coffee – or whatever! - have fun and raise lots of money to help give children and young people a safer future. Helen Stewart from the Waterfoot Hotel said: “We’re delighted to be able to support the NSPCC’s local services by hosting our own Stop for Tea event, and of course donating a fabulous night’s stay in the beautiful Ambassador Suite, with dinner and breakfast included. “Make your tea-break the high point of your day, and do something great for local children in the process. Debt stays stagnant as credit cards decline Families in Northern Ireland will typically have almost £8,000 in personal debt from loans, overdrafts and credit cards and that’s despite three years of paying them down, says a report just published by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC). And the flexible friend, the over used credit card, is suffering a mid –life crisis as debit cards replace them as the most used payment method for the first time in years. Credit card use could fall into permanent decline, with the rise of digital technology and payday lenders changing how people access credit, the report states. Each household paid off an average of around £355 of their unsecured debt in 2011, but UK households remain “among the most indebted in the world” despite three successive years of net repayments, the report said. UK consumers will continue to pay down their debts, owing around £7,500 by 2013. But it highlighted “worrying” signs in spending habits, particularly among the 25 to 34 age group, where a quarter have used credit to fund essential purchases in the last year. Average incomes have fallen by nearly 3.5 per cent in real terms over the past year, squeezing budgets even further as consumers have faced soaring bills. Simon Westcott, director in PwC’s financial services practice, said: “UK consumers are among the most indebted in the world, with the average UK household still saddled with nearly £8,000 of unsecured debt. “Although the UK Government’s austerity drive appears to be hitting home, with households paying off an average of £355 worth of their debt in 2011, three years of austerity by UK consumers has only made a small dent in the total levels of borrowing. In addition to this, our credit confidence survey has shown that there is a growing reluctance to borrow in the future and a marked deterioration in confidence about meeting repayments, particularly among 18 to 24-year-olds.” Bank of England figures showed last week that consumers cut their debts at the fastest rate in two decades during December, amid signs they dipped into savings to pay for Christmas. Credit card borrowing was also flat for the third month in a row, despite the festive season. The PwC report said that credit card borrowing fell by 5 per cent last year, leaving the average balance at around £1,000, with tightening credit conditions compounding the issue. Meanwhile, debit cards grew by 10 per cent in 2011, to become used more frequently than cash in payments for the first time.

Calling all Miss NI hopefuls Greysteel girl, Jade Roberts is hoping that her model looks will bag her a place in the final of the 2012 Miss Northern Ireland contest the race begins to find a worthy title winner. Jade will be one of a host of girls hoping to make it to the gala final of the competition which has just been launched. The Europa Hotel will again play host to the event which will take place on May 14 after contestants have been whittled down to just 24 as heats take place across Northern Ireland. Colin McEvoy, Head of Open + Direct main sponsor of the event said: “We have supported the Miss Northern Ireland contest for several years now so we are absolutely delighted to be the main sponsor of this year’s event. “We wish all the girls who are taking part the best of luck and we are looking forward to crowning a new winner who will represent Northern Ireland in the Miss World Contest.” Alison explained the heats and entry opportunities for girls hoping to take this year’s coveted title: “I’m delighted to be starting our twentysixth year of the contest and each
year it seems to get more and more popular. Our official search will start with a heat in Café Vaudeville in Belfast on Thursday, March 1 and will continue on a whirlwind tour throughout March and April - stopping off in Bank in Newry, Spice Restaurant in Antrim, Da Vinci’s Hotel in Derry city, Walsh’s Hotel in Maghera, the Coach in Banbridge, Sense in Cookstown, Sally’s in Omagh, McAleer’s in Dungannon, Drumbo Park in Lisburn, where last year’s winner Finola qualified, Horatio Todd’s in East Belfast, before finally coming to a close in Betty Blacks in Bangor on April 29, 2012.” The winner of the competition will also win an all-expenses paid trip to Miss World in China, a car from Downey’s, taxed and insured for a year by Open + Direct, as well as a wardrobe of designer dresses for Miss World from Beverly Hills and a front cover photo shoot with IN! In partnership with the Royal National Institute for the Blind, Boots Opticians are offering everyone a £10 eye check voucher after research has shown that half of people in Northern Ireland don’t get their eyes checked regularly. ‘The Great Big Eye Check’ was launched this week and aims to get people through the doors so that early signs of eye sight trouble can be detected and treated. RNIB estimate that 100 people in the UK start to lose their eyesight every day because the early signs of disease go undetected. LEGAL MATTERS Explain the background to the set up of the business and the motivation for set up?
your business than a client who feels that you have done your best for them in the circumstances of their particular case.
Cormac and I were colleagues in Brendan Kearney’s office a number of years ago. He left in 2001 to establish his own practice McKeone and Co and asked me to join him a few months ago. I had always wondered what it would be like to run my own practice and decided to rise to the challenge. Having worked for someone else for so many years the flexibility and autonomy that being my own boss would afford me appealed to me.
What are the main challenges for your business and how do you overcome them?
In this issue Carmel tackles the subject of Divorce
What are the grounds upon which I can get a divorce? Plastic bag tax welcomed The new tax on plastic bags will create 10 new jobs in Derry as well as giving the environment a break from discarded shopping bag waste. Environment Minister Alex Attwood this week announced the tax , which will start at five pence per bag, will be introduced in April 2013, on single use of plastic carrier bags. The bag tax will increase to ten pence in April 2014. And as the administration of the scheme will be based in Derry. Up to 100 jobs could be created. It is understood the ten civil service posts will be based in the city to implement and oversee the introduction and management of the tax. Mr Attwood says that move reflects his commitment to job dispersal in the draft Programme for Government. Derry’s MP, the SDLP’s Mark Durkan, says a
St Columba’s trail unveiled A brand new tourist trail celebrating the life of St Columba has just been launched. The St Columba Trail takes a fresh look at the life and traditions of St Columb.and draws together the fascinating story of St Colmcille’s life and legacy. St Columba or St Colmcille is credited with taking Christianity to many parts of Ireland and Scotland. Writer and politician, Dr Ian Adamson, launched the new cultural and tourist trail which will link Ireland and Scotland at the Linen Hall library in Belfast. The trail stretches from Gleann Cholm Cille in south west Donegal to the Western Isles of Scotland. There are nine interlinked routes, including three in Donegal, one in Derry City, and another between Coleraine and Limavady. The trail can be seen at www.colmcille.org, and can also be viewed on a screen at the Linen Hall Library until March 9. “Today shows the potential for creative collaboration between Ireland and Scotland”, said Seán Ó Coinn, Deputy Chief Executive of Foras na Gaeilge. “St Colmcille is a very important figure in the history of Ireland and Scotland. Both the trail and the exhibition celebrate our heritage in a creative and innovative way. We’re proud of what they have to offer and we believe that visitors will use the trail to explore the language and heritage of Ireland and Scotland for many years to come.” The monasteries of St Columba shaped the history of Ireland and Scotland and produced works of art such as the Book of Kells and the earliest Celtic crosses and the first annals or historical records. For centuries, pilgrims have visited the numerous landmarks linked to St Columba which range from his Donegal birthplace to Iona in Argyll where he founded his monastery in 563. It is hoped that this online resource will inspire modern day pilgrimages to these areas.
Alex Altwood similar tax in the south has proved to be a “very successful measure.” “As well as the environmental and behavioural effects there is the added benefit for Derry of the administrative jobs associated with the levy,” he says. “Administration of the levy has been an issue that generated significant debate during consultation the legislation last year and it is also to be welcomed that up to ten jobs will be created to carry out this role.” More information is available online at www. rethinkwasteni.org/carrierbaglevy
Give Patsy a peerage says Bridgestone guide IT’S no great surprise that the excellence which is seen and felt in every aspect of Derry’s Beech Hill Hotel has been recognised in the prestigious Brigestone Guide. The Bridgestone which details the 100 best places to eat and stay in Ireland said that the country house hotel displays “the very essence of what it looks for in its listings. “Everyone working for the hotel is always trying to do their best to make sure everything is done right,” says the review. The Beech Hill’s owner, Patsy O’Kane, is described as “one of the greatest hoteliers” and a “mistress of that art and practices that art every day in her work for this beautiful early 18th century house.” The Beech Hill is described as “a palace of hospitality” and the authors finish their tribute with the words “give this woman a peerage”. Mrs. O’Kane said: “It’s a great honour to be written about like this in such an important guide book and it can do us nothing but good. The guide is read by people who really are intending to travel to Ireland and people who are looking for the best accommodation and the best food. There is no doubt that what the Bridgestone guide says will bring more overseas tourists to us this year.”

Talking Trash
To smack or not to smack
A Labour MP has said that his party was wrong to tighten up the law on parents smacking their children which was done at the height of Tony’s power back in 2004. Apparently his constituents have been coming up to him and saying that parents’ failure to beat their little darlings too pulp was the direct cause of the Tottenham riots in the summer of 2011. There are two bizarre things about this; firstly did we need a law to tell us that there is a difference between a sharp one on the behind and child abuse? Any sensible parent knows that when tempers are frayed it’s time to take a step back and do a “time out” for you both. But in a dangerous situation there’s nothing quite like a little smack to stop your toddler in their tracks. Secondly why do the parents always get the blame when things go wrong? Weren’t the riots a demonstration of hopelessness, frustration and a failure on the part of successive governments to offer something to young people other than useless university degrees? Admittedly that’s a little complex. Forget itblame the parents.
Banker shares our pain
One of the Chief Executives of RBS has turned down his million pound share bonus because he does believe in David Cameron’s so-called moral capitalism after all. What a guy. He must really feel that we ARE all in this together or…. he caved into the pressure he was under after every national news bulletin for five days in a row wheeled him out as an example of how David Cameron has failed to curb the bankers’ bonuses. Unsurprisingly, it was then he decided that taking it might be a little greedy considering he already gets £1 million salary. We aren’t all in this together, never have been and never will be. Well that’s something Cameron might say if he was given an injection of truth serum . Now that would be a headline.
Loose Women need to tighten up If there’s one programme on TV that’s set the cause of women being taken seriously on the box back at least 20 years, we need look no further than that lunch time “treat” of Loose Women. The revolving panel of shrews that at one time included the wonderful Janice Street Porter (why she agreed I don’t know) is a warning to us all on letting the face of Iceland Pound Buys represent the fairer sex. And sadly it’s not enough for them to pollute the air waves for an hour a day, they’ve all become pretty adept at squeezing their far reaching TV tentacles into every Strictly Come Dancing in the Jungle, Locked up in a House with 10 other D listers show, they can manage to get on. Walking car crash and ‘Loose Women’ stalwart, Denise Welch had no sooner won Celebrity Big Brother than she made her way onto the front of Sunday tabloids everywhere as the aging lover of the now obligatory toy boy every would-be cougar should have. Ever since Demi bagged Ashton, we have watched as ladies of a certain age everywhere have striven to get one as they once did a hostess trolley in the beginning of the age of the lower middle class dinner party. We’ve already seen Denise falling out of clubs in outfits that scream mutton dressed as… well you know the saying and we’ll now undoubtedly have to suffer her “exclusive” in whatever red top that will pay her the most. Then sit riveted as she reveals what sent her “spiralling” into the arms of someone half her age.
The Estate
When the ads started appearing for BBC documentary The Estate, they didn’t quite tell us what to expect or how sad and depressing and on a few rare occasions how uplifting it would be. The Doherty family are surely proof for all the right wing nay-sayers out there, that families living in places like Ballysally aren’t all dole scroungers who want to drink vodka and get benefits for the rest of their lives.
We’ve already endured the autobiography of the one off of Coronation Street, spilling her guts about how hard her life has been. “I married the wrong man and suffered from depression for years,” we heard her cry . Join the club love. Another one is having panic attacks and had to pull out of the show at the last minute which made for some earth shattering news. Roll over the world being on the verge of economic collapse, another 40 something is having a bit of a meltdown. The one who was married to Chris Evans but doesn’t like to be defined by it (even though she quite clearly is) has been in every women’s weekly shouting about how her toy boy and monthly sun holidays don’t allow her to have time for kids. “I like them but couldn’t eat a whole one” gets funnier each time you hear it. The panel have become caricatures of themselves and every tacky headline makes it worse. It’s partly because we are used to being fed this so- called celebrity trash and partly because we are all so lazy now that our attention doesn’t demand anything more than a theme tune and some bawdy cackling from a panel of middle-aged women. Here’s a thought- put a panel of female news readers on for the afternoon and ask them to discuss the euro zone crisis and watch the ratings plummet. You couldn’t play online bingo and concentrate on the reasons why Greece must be taken out of the equation. As a small compromise the panel they have could at least button – both their 20 something outfits and their lips. We live in hope…
The want to be hard working and do the very best for their children in what are often the most difficult of circumstances. And let’s not forget how difficult these circumstances really are- little money, little hope of a job or of getting on the ladder to a better life. I’m not quite sure the Beeb got the tone right with this one but it’s compulsive viewing all the same.

Welcome for cancer screening extension
NEWS
AN extension of the current bowel cancer screening programme has been welcomed by Foyle MP Mark Durkan this week as all health trusts shift up a gear to help save lives. Bowel Cancer is currently Northern Ireland’s second biggest killer. The former SDLP party leader pledged his support for the charity- Beating Bowel Cancer at Westminster when he attended the charity’s annual ‘Be Loud, Be Clear, parliamentary reception. Statistics confirm that, in Northern Ireland, more people are diagnosed with bowel cancer and more people die from the disease than in England. “One in eighteen people are diagnosed with bowel cancer and these local figures show that people in Derry and throughout the North must take bowel cancer seriously,” said the MP. “It is important to note that, if diagnosed early, more than 90% of bowel cancer patients could be successfully treated compared with less than 7 per cent of patients diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer. “I hope that, by supporting Beating Bowel Cancer’s campaign, I can encourage people to BE LOUD about bowel cancer and BE CLEAR about the symptoms of this deadly disease.” Dr Janet Little, assistant director of service development screening at the Public Health Agency, said early detection improves survival rates dramatically. Call for increase in rural policing RESIDENTS of and political representatives for rural areas of Derry have called on police provide more on the ground policing. A six-week public consultation period over the future of three police estates in the G District command area-including Eglinton PSNI station which has already been operating on a reduced opening hours time scale for a considerable period of time has just begun. The entire consultation period will cease on Monday, March 12 with residents and other interested groups required to express their stated preferences by then. A letter written by PSNI District Commander, Chief Superintendent Stephen Martin, outlines police thinking on the issue and opens by stating: “You will be aware that we are carrying out a major review of police buildings across the PSNI. This includes our own ‘G’ District which covers the Foyle, Strabane, Limavady and Magh-
erafelt areas. “As part of that review I have had to look very closely at all of the stations within my District to ensure we are using our buildings in a way that provides the best possible personal, professional and protective policing service to everyone. The stations currently under review are Eglinton, Castlederg and Dungiven.” However, DUP Alderman for the Rural Ward, Gary Middleton said the “centralisation” of policing resources is a cause for ‘deep worry’ for people in the affected districts, especially in light of a recent rash of apparently highly organised thefts at businesses and homes in country areas. Chief Superintendent Martin’s letter further states: “Eglinton police station is currently used as a base for waterside Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team and our latest reports show that approximately 180 people visited the station in person in 2011.
“While no decisions have been made, it is inevitable that there will be some closure recommendations. My command team and I are committed to listening to people in the communities we serve. I assure you that a decision to recommend the closure of a station is not taken lightly. I can understand that some may take comfort in having a police station nearby, however modern policing is about people, not buildings. “I want to have a constructive debate with the people of Eglinton and the surrounding area about the way forward.” But, Alderman Gary Middleton told the Sentinel: “It is crucially important for the PSNI to show how such closures will actually improve the quality of policing in local communities such as Eglinton through re-directing accrued from station closures into on-the-ground, highly visible policing. It is also vital that the decisions taken with regard to stations actually improve service
delivery and policing performance throughout the Province.” Ulster Unionist Party representative for the area Alderman Mary Hamilton said: “I still believe strong policing is required in all those areas. “For example if those stations are closed and something happens in Claudy and Eglinton by the time the police get there the criminals are back home and in bed. “The crime figures may be down, but I believe that this is because people are not reporting crimes. But, the police do not have the manpower to cover. And, this is not the fault of the PSNI, but the powers that be who are cutting resources-there should be more people on the ground.” Those wishing to express their views on Eglinton police station are asked to contact Chief Inspector Garry Eaton either by phoning or writing to Strand Road PSNI station or alternatively by emailing garry. eaton at psni.pnn.police.uk.

Trainee chef Joanne McCallion is one step closer to working with internationally renowned chef Raymond Blanc as she has just won the regional heat in a competition for a work placement at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Great Milton, Oxford. Two students from the six FE colleges in Northern Ireland will get to work there. The Derry girl, who is a trainee chef at the North West Institute wowed judges with her sea food and steak menu, seen as ambitious by the judges; but she pulled it off nonetheless. Judges, Brian McDermott, the Community Chef, and Walter Tsang, Head Chef and owner of Yoko Noodle Restaurant in Coleraine, were impressed by Joanne’s “complex and ambitious” three-course menu. In just over two hours Joanne produced a Trio
of Seafoodstarter, followed by Smoked Fillet of Beef and wilted spinach, wild mushroom and sweet potato cannelloni and a pancetta jus. A study of the landscape an geological history of Tory Island has been included in a re working of the ground breaking and best selling tome; ‘Altas a Study of Rural Irish Landscape’ published by Cork University Press. A major update of the bestselling work, which when it first appeared in 1997, was instantly hailed as a pioneering volume in increasing appreciation of the Irish landscape. The sumptuous quality of its design, the excellence of its cartography, and the clarity of its prose ensured that it became an award-winning volume, widely praised internationally as one of the finest books ever to appear on a national landscape. This expanded and revamped second edition advances to another level because more than one-third of the content is entirely new. The hard-hitting and contemporary modern
section covers the Celtic Tiger period, as well as looking at what needs to be done to face the future in challenging economic times. Local interest will be piqued by the section on Tory Island which is one of five new regional case studies. Tory is generally considered as one of the last unspoiled places in Ireland and the book charts the archaeological history of the Island and considers its place in a modern Ireland. The Atlas combines superb illustrations and cutting-edge cartography with a warmly written text accessible to a general reader. But the hundreds of maps, diagrams, photographs and paintings present leading-edge scholarly information in an enjoyable way, suitable for any reader, home, school or college. Eglinton fashion evening in aid of Marie Curie care
NEWS
What a treat was in store for those who attended the Evening of Vintage Fashion, hosted by Pauline and Alan Hunter at their home, Longfield Farm, Eglinton in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. Family members and friends contributed a huge array of privately owned authentic pieces of both vintage and antique clothing and accessories, ranging from Victorian mourning attire right through to psychedelic ‘70s flares to be modelled and displayed. Pauline called upon friend Sharon Black, who is a keen collector of all vintage, to assist her in collating the background knowledge which formed the basis of this very informal, yet informative, fund raising evening. The sole purpose of both evenings was to raise funds for a Marie Curie cycle challenge from Malin Head to Mizen Head in May 2012. The evening commenced with a sherry reception, followed by an introductory talk by Fiona Wallace, Chairperson of the newly formed Marie Curie local action group, who spoke of the invaluable contribution this organisation makes. This was a very successful event which, to date, has raised £2415.00. Pauline and Alan would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank all those who supported the event and made contributions.

WHAT’S ON
The celebrated virtuoso partnership of Máire Ní Chathasaigh, “the greatest Celtic harper of our age” and Irish Traditional Musician of the Year, and England’s premier flatpicking guitarist, Chris Newman, has toured in twentytwo countries worldwide. Their performances are an enticing cocktail of dynamic Irish dance-music, soulful airs, evocative songs and their own striking compositions, spiked with shots of hot jazz, bluegrass and baroque and served up with exhilarating versatility and inventiveness and “subversive wit”. This evening’s concert will showcase material from their two recently released solo albums, The Crystal Veil, Máire’s exploration of the spine-tinglingly beautiful Irish ‘slow air’ tradition, and Chris’ Still Getting Away with It, a celebration of his 40 successful years as one of the most revered and influential English acoustic guitarists of his generation. Also featured will be music from their last duo CD FireWire, voted “Best Celtic Instrumental Album” in the Just Plain Folks Music Awards in Nashville, Tennessee - the largest music awards of any kind anywhere.

Danny Bayne stars as ‘Danny’ with Carina Gillespie as his sweetheart ‘Sandy’, as the couple follow in the footsteps of John Travolta and Olivia Newton John who famously played the roles in the hit 1978 movie. The cast also includes: Ricky Rojas (‘Kenickie’), Kate Somerset How (‘Rizzo’), Derek Andrews (‘Roger’), Laura Wilson (‘Jan’), Richard Vincent (‘Doody’), Lauren Stroud (‘Frenchy’), Josh Dever (‘Sonny’), Lois Urwin (‘Marty’), Darren John (‘Eugene’), Sammy Kelly

This production originally opened in the West End in 1993 (co-produced with Robert Stigwood) where it enjoyed a fantastic run of 6 years. The last international tour of Grease was a phenomenal success, playing to sell-out audiences and smashing records at many venues. Since 1993 the show has been seen by audiences totalling over 12 million people in the UK alone. Last year, a second production played internationally in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Auckland and Hong Kong. Grease continues to maintain its everlasting popularity, proving its enduring appeal with audiences of every generation worldwide. Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, directed by David Gilmore (Daisy Pulls It Off, Happy Days, Song & Dance, Footloose) and choreographed by Arlene Phillips (Starlight Express, Saturday Night Fever, Flashdance The Musical & BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing), Grease is produced in the West End and on tour by Paul Nicholas and David Ian and is presented by arrangement with Robert Stigwood.

FOOD & WINE
FOOD
Those of you who have ordered Oz Clarke’s ‘250 Wines for 2012’ may want to look away now but supermarkets are and have been for quite some time offering some of the best wines around. Last year Tesco received glowing plaudits from wine critics who praised it ‘Finest’ range and Sainsburys ‘Taste the Difference’ wines also topped the critics’ polls. Let’s be honest buying wine from supermarkets is the way that most of us do it these days an in response to that the big stores have upped their game giving us matches for everything from strawberries to sushi. We drink more wine in Ireland now that we do beers and that’s also thanks to the supermarket push on vino. And not many countries enjoy the range that we have despite the heavy tax on our favourite tipples. Did you know that most wine is now bought by women during the weekly supermarket shop and so price is clearly important. Indeed, so cut-throat is the competition that one could drink nothing but discounted wine all year long. But there is more to life than that and, although the smallest boutique producers all too often don’t get a look in, if you shop around there are some fascinating and enjoyable wines to be found.
Restaurant review: The Waterfoot First off... this meal really was a treat. The good reports really don’t compare to experiencing this restaurant first-hand because it was all wonderful from start to finish. As we walked through the double doors, we were met with a warm and welcoming interior, providing the ideal environment to relax and enjoy yourself in style. It encapsulates the sleek elegance of the art-deco era, complimented by the mellow tones of classical jazz in the background and a projection of old classic black and white movies on the walls. We were greeted immediately with such warm and affectionate smiles and gently ushered to our seats, our coats were taken from us to allow for a more comfortable seating. The standard of service throughout was exemplary, the obvious careful selection of staff are a credit to the hotel. The restaurant boasts a mouth-watering ‘A La Carte’ menu which is both fresh and creative, catering for all palates, and making the best use of locally sourced seasonal produce. This is complimented by an extensive wine list, designed to suit all tastes. And for the most special of evenings there’s a luxurious wine bar within the restaurant, featuring a comprehensive cocktail menu. We began our meal with rustic home baked breads along with a selection of olives, sundried tomatoes, oils and dips, which really got the taste buds excited. For main course we opted for the 8oz fillet steak, honestly the best I’ve tasted in a long while. Cooked to perfection, it melted in the mouth. The spiced chicken escalope with creamy chorizo sauce was absolutely delicious. Both dishes were
accompanied by fresh Mediterranean vegetables and baby boiled potatoes. We ended our meal on a sweet note... Trying the sticky toffee pudding and the white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake, both out of this world! With generous portion sizes, impeccable service and very reasonable prices, complimented by a beautiful intimate ambiance, this experience will definitely go down as one to be remembered. A three-star restaurant with five-star food…

Shoe heaven at Minette Anita Flavin’s shop on Pump Street has been open for less than a year but already has a dedicated following among those who know quality and style at affordable prices. This month Minette is launching its first wedding range and a first glance at the shoes would suggest that you’re looking at a pair of Jimmy Choos or Louboutins and there’s a good reason for that- while the shoes undoubtedly have her personal stamp, Anita works with the same Italian factory once used by both design houses. Handmade and in leather from top to toe, the real surprise is the price as the wedding range starts from just £145. After a successful career with Office London and as a supplier to the likes of Harrods and Selfridges Anita decided that cutting out the middle man was the way to offer clients designer shoes they could afford. “I source the leather in Italy and give my designs to the factory and work closely with them until I get what I’m after,” said Anita. “It’s not enough though to have a unique product; that has to be combined with excellent customer care and you must work with the customer to give them what they want. You can’t just open a shop and set up a website and expect people to come in, it has to be the whole package. “Obviously a hand made leather shoe is going to be more comfortable than a mass produced one but the wedding range is definitely designed with comfort in mind because if a bride isn’t comfortable on her Anita Flavin, Owner of Minette Shoes wedding day, it’ll show and that would be awful. “With this range I’ll be working closely with brides to give them exactly what they want. For example they might like the style of a shoe but not the finish and so what I can do is to change that around for them to suit. “Brides to be can bring in their dresses and we will match up the shoe to heel height and of course style. “A huge thing is that I only make eight pairs of each style and that includes the full range of sizes and so I can guarantee that no one will have the same pair and I would say that any of the bridal shoes could easily be worn again. “We’re just in the middle of a sale so that we can clear out for the Spring/Summer collection that will be arriving in the next few weeks. “We cater for every day, formals, bridal wear. I always say that we don’t discriminate,” laughed Anita. The Neet brand, which was the first one that I launched is also available in the shop and of course online. “Our sale is seriously good. Some of the shoes we have on offer are just £35 or two pairs for £60 and that’s for handmade leather shoes! That’s unbelievable you have to admit.” www.facebook.com/pages/Minette-shoespump-street-derry/. www.minetteshoes. com/.

Wedding Tips
It’s meant to be the happiest day of your life. But for many brides, the prospect of being the centre of attention with endless photographs adds to the stress levels. The real secret of looking beautiful on your big day is to relax and keep it simple you want to look like yourself, only better. Here we bring you the best hair, make-up and well-being tips to make you look and feel fabulous.
And be sure to apply your make-up in daylight. Artificially lit bathrooms or salons will give you the wrong impression of how your make-up will look.
Don’t get stressed Nobody wants to wake up to a spot on the day of a big event, especially your wedding day. Most people tend to have greasy skin around the time of their wedding due to stress and anxiety. Try using peppermint tea as a toner, after you have cleansed your skin. Do NOT look too orange Using fresh mint leaves- add boiling Nothing looks worse on brides than water and leave for five minutes. a really false-looking orange tan. When the tea has cooled down, use “Go easy on fake tans - you will some on a cotton wool pad or a only stand out for the wrong reasons small sponge. unless everyone else in the photoApply a few times to your face and graphs has been on holiday,” says dry with a tissue – this is a simple Barbara Daly, make-up guru, who thing, but can help. If you have dry did Princess Diana’s wedding day skin, use chamomile instead of pepmake-up. permint. ”Go for a light, healthy look by sweeping a non-orangey bronzer Do keep it natural over cheeks, bridge of nose, centre To ensure beautiful bridal hair, of forehead and tip of chin.” make sure you pre-plan. Don’t wash Try Make-up by Barbara Daly your hair an hour before your hairCheek-to-Cheek Bronzer, £6.95; dresser arrives, wash it as soon as Tesco. you get up so it settles down and if
you are wearing your hair up, then wash it the night before. Have regular conditioning treatments for a couple of months beforehand so your hair is in top condition on the day. Do keep it in place One of the most common mistakes that brides make with their hair on the big day is mistakenly believing that the hair comb, which usually comes attached to the veil, will hold in place all day - it won’t! To secure firmly, remove the comb and sew a series of small ‘loops’ onto the veil. Secure the veil to the crown by threading hair grips through the loops; twist back and pin to secure. If you have chosen to wear a hairpiece for the day, no matter how well you think you have matched it to your hair colour, take it along to your hair stylist for a consultation. It’s really important to ensure that the hairpiece blends seamlessly with your natural colour - in a variety of different lights - or else it will be very obvious in flash photography. Don’t do dead ends Have your hair cut at least a week
before the big day to prevent split ends and so it can settle down. If your hair is coloured, go and have a glosser put on just before the big day for shine. On the day, entrust one of your bridal entourage with a small can of shine spray to refresh every now and then and take you through the day and night. Practice makes perfect On your wedding day you should look like yourself at your most beautiful. Always have a practice before the big day and take photographs so you can get an idea of how it will look in the pictures. On the day itself you should use a primer, it is essential for make-up that will last the whole day. Also, it’s best to get a foundation that is custom blended for you, in photographs you will need slightly more coverage, so there can be no room for mistakes. And use powder – it might seem like more make-up than you are used to, but a light dusting of loose powder will set your make-up and give you a glow.

The big day celeb style There’s no doubt that the big day is all about expressing your personal style and naturally some of us are blessed with a little more of that than others…. While it can be a good idea to look to celebrities for inspiration much like us mere mortals some of them have more style than others too. Grace Kelly is still the most iconic bridal image some 40 years after she walked up the aisle- despite Ms Middleton’s well made attempt to steal her crown (pardon the pun) last Spring. It’s probably best to avoid taking tips from the stars of My Big Fat Gypsy wedding but if you really feel more is more then go for it- it’s your day. But be warned a 20 stone wedding dress can leave scars (and not just physical ones)....
Heidi Klum and Seal may be no more but this £2 million yellow diamond was made to last.
Spoiled heiress Kim Kardashian got a £2 million sparkler – we can dream.
A frock for her and a tux for herEllen and Portia do it in style.
Lily’s in the Pink- this beautiful vintage dress is an inspiration for second hand lovers everywhere.
The original and the best- the first tabloid bride- Grace Kelly.
The most famous of them all- Diana’s sapphire reputed to be worth more than £20 million.
My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding might not be the best place to look for inspiration.

Navigating middle age can be painful Moving on to middle age from the success of teen comedy Jun, director Jason Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody are back together to bring us the wonderful ‘Young Adult’ starring the normally goddess-like Charlize Theron sporting a Hello Kitty T-Shirt and looking decidely dischevelled. The film is a study (and warning on) a refusal to let go and grow up and works well as a variation of a coming home road movie. Charlize Theron plays the depressed, and possibly alcoholic Mavis Gary who’s a ghostwriter on a once popular series of high school novels that’s about to be axed. Divorced and down the highly unlikeable Mavis sets off for her home town to reclaim her first love and it matters little to her that he’s married with a baby. So off trots Mavis to Mercury, Minnesota, where once she was prom queen. Mavis is determined to win back her handsome high-school boyfriend, Buddy (sweet-natured Patrick Wilson), and save him from a life of small-town mediocrity. At first it’s funny and superior as Mavis mocks her Hicksville roots and prepares herself to win buddy back. But the laughs soon turn sour before Diablo Cody shows us sad and the tragic as Mavis is revealed to us (but
not herself) as a deluded adult who has yet to grow up. Theron is excellent as she shares her midlife crisis how much misunderstood the world around her. But the star of the film is stand-up comedian Patton Oswalt as the pudgy former classmate she’d ignored who becomes her new confidant. As a teenager he briefly achieved a sort of fame as the victim of a hate crime when he was permanently crippled by bullies who attacked him in the belief that he was gay. When he proved to be straight, his case was considered less interesting, and he settled for a life as an eccentric, friendless stoic. The film’s moral is that you can go home again, but you’d be wise not to. Young Adult Production year: 2011 Cert (UK): 15 Runtime: 93 mins Directors: Jason Reitman, Jason Retiman Cast: Charlize Theron, Collette Wolfe, Elizabeth Reaser, JK Simmons, Jill Eikenberry, Mary Beth Hurt, Patrick Wilson, Patton Oswalt

The Top 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2012 Movieland 2011 has gone and we have said hello to 2012 which looks set to be a bright year if you love cinema. The Oscars haven’t named their favorites yet- but we can... There are some great movies to look forward to in 2012 – sequels, re-releases, film adaptations, and even a Pixar movie. Judd Apatow and Taratino both have new releases, so here is a list of what are some of the most anticipated movies of 2012. 10. The Comedy: This Is 40 Judd Apatow’s last directorial effort was the 2009 dramady Funny People. The film showed us a new side of Apatow, whose previous films Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin had been mainly comedies. Although This Is 40 is a spinoff from Knocked Up, the film will follow in the footsteps of Funny People in terms of tone (don’t worry, it’ll still be a comedy). Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl won’t be reprising their characters, instead the film will focus on Paul Rudd‘s and Leslie Mann‘s characters. 9. Titanic 3D One of the highest grossing films of all time is returning to the big just in time for the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sailing. While some may scoff at a re-release some movies are meant for the big screen and Titanic is definitely one of them. 8. Brave This will be the studio’s first fairy tale and tells the story of a royal Scottish family and its Princess Merida who is determined to follow her own path as a warrior.
Django Unchained will follow a slaveturned bounty hunter (Jamie Fox) who sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). This will be the first time we see DiCaprio play the actual villain. If anything, Django Unchained is going to shed some light on one of our country’s most disgraceful moments, and we can count on Tarantino to make this history lesson very entertaining. 5. Snow White and the Huntsman When the first photos of Kristen Stewart as Snow White were released, we were shocked to see her dressed in armor instead of the iconic blue and yellow dress. The photos showed that Rupert Sanders‘ version of the timeless fairytale would definitely be twisted and dark. The trailer confirmed our suspicions, and made Snow White and the Huntsman our favorite of the two Snow White films being released in 2012. 4. The Amazing Spider-Man Just a few years after Spider-Man 3, there whole superhero franchise got a reboot. In 2012, we’ll see Spider-Man take another form in the shape of British actor Andrew Garfield, who won audiences over with his cute stunt during this year’s Comic Con. Marc Webb‘s version, The Amazing SpiderMan will not include Mary Jane Watson; instead, it will highlight Spider-Man’s first real love, Gwen Stacy, who will be played by Emma Stone. Despite how fans of the comics may feel about this new take, there’s no denying that it’s a film we really, really want to see.
7. The Great Gatsby Why a remake I hear you cry? Who can beat Redford as Gatsby? It’s a classic tale that has been made into a movie plenty of times, so why is this one so special? Well, aside from its stellar cast, there’s whole generations who haven’t seen this story brought to life. The last Gatsby to hit theaters was in 1974 with Mia Farrow and Robert Redford, and the film wasn’t a total critical success (despite its two great leads).
3. The Avengers The Avengers is a crossover movie that will bring together our favorite superheroes including Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye. This is a comic fan’s dream. We’re going to be seeing all of these superheroes on-screen, at the same time, fighting the forces of evil. More important, we’re going to see these characters interact with each other, which based off the trailer, we can garner that it’ll be very entertaining to watch. We’re excited.
6. Django Unchained Quentin Tarantino is following his 2009 Nazi drama Inglorious Basterds with Django Unchained, a film that will touch upon another sensitive subject – slavery. Tarantino is known for his violent and bloody films, and this topic is exactly that.
2. The Hunger Games With Harry Potter over and just one more Twilight film to go, many are wondering if The Hunger Games will be the next big franchise. Like the two before it, The Hunger Games is being adapted from young adult novels. This film is set in the future

This will be the last time we see Christopher Nolan at the helm (of the Batman franchise) and Christian Bale as the famed cape crusader.
1. The Dark Knight Rises Christopher Nolan‘s super-sequel The Dark Knight Rises is probably the most anticipated movie of 2012. The film even won the award for Most Anticipated Movie at the 6th annual Scream Awards. Every time new footage or photos are revealed, fans and bloggers alike jump with eagerness. When The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters this Summer, it will be the end of an era.

Comedy this season comes from CONAL GALLEN in January; while also in the same month, FATHER TED & CO promises a unique and interactive comedy dining experience, which brings the audience face to face with this trio of famous priests and manically devoted housekeeper! Page 63 MILLENNIUM FORUM’S FIRST TOURING PRODUCTION The Millennium Forum will embark on its first touring production next month when acclaimed actor/director, Adrian Dunbar, directs a brand new production of Frank McGuinness’ CARTHAGINIANS. The play will open at the Forum on Wednesday 22nd February and run until Saturday 25th before touring extensively throughout Ireland. Frank McGuinness’ CARTHAGINIANS has often been acknowledged as one of the few enduring plays to have emerged from ‘The Troubles’. An elegy for Bloody Sunday in Derry, it is the survival of tragedy, of intense grief which becomes the unspoken subject through the personal journeys of three women and three men who camp out in a graveyard awaiting the rise of the dead. Dido is the outsider who brings daily pram loads of supplies including a script of his own attempt at a Troubles Play, The Burning Balaclava, the comic centrepiece which is surrounded by jokes, quizzes and encounters which pass the time of waiting. Individual resurrections signal a community, like Carthage, rising from its ashes. This production commemorates the 40th anniversary of Bloody Sunday and, appropriately within the theme of Carthaginians celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Millennium Forum. Hauntingly coherent beauty and of sadness and of a deep defiant joy. The Financial times Brilliantly effective and affective. The Guardian A completeness which engages our absolute attention. The Independent CARTHAGINIANS opens at the Millennium Forum on Wed 22nd Feb and runs until Sat 25th Feb. Tickets are now available from the Box Office. Telephone 71 264455 or visit www.millenniumforum. co.uk for bookings. ‘Carthaginians’ is proudly sponsored by the Tower Hotel, Derry.

Tyre Safety Ever wonder when to replace your worn car tyres? The performance of your car tyres is critical to the safety, performance and efficiency of your vehicle. Most tyres are designed to provide similar performance throughout their lives. However, at some point they start to lose performance in terms of their traction and braking ability. Here are a few tips that should help you decide if it is time to start shopping for a new set of tyres and avoid spending more than you need to. Understand that the primary function of tread on a tyre is to divert water from beneath the tyre to improve traction and avoid hydroplaning on wet roads. Tyres become unsafe when they’re worn, and once the tread is down to 1/16th of an inch (1.6mm), the tire is no longer safe. Know the legal requirements. Worn tyres should be replaced as a matter of common sense to assure safety, but in some jurisdictions, there are also legal requirements to replace worn tyres. In the UK, the mini-
mum depth of the tread on tyres is 1.6 millimeters, across the central ¾ of the tread around the whole tyre. Make note of any irregular tread wear. This could indicate a wheel misalignment, the need for a tyre rotation, or both. Uneven tread wear is a sign that you need to take your car in for servicing. If uneven tyre wear is extreme or if tyres wear out much faster than expected, have a competent tyre workshop check your suspension and correct as necessary before replacing tyres. Improper alignment or worn suspension parts can dramatically shorten a tyre’s life. Replace the tyres at least every 6 years. If you’re not sure, the minimum replacement time that is recommended is six years regardless of use, with 10 years being the maximum service life for tyres. Check your owner’s manual for specific recommendations related to your car. And always err on the side of caution if you suspect your vehicle has tyres that are over six years of age.

Stylish saloons are market leaders The saloon car has evolved from the days when it was seen as the choice of the surburban dad. Here is the pick of some of the best cars around- smart enough not to say mum and dad but with plenty of room for the family. To stand out in the crowd they need to hit high standards in comfort, performance, and practicality, as well as come reasonably priced, to get the average consumer’s attention.
rather bland route in terms of styling, rejecting the dynamic design of the Vauxhall Insignia and the Citroen C5, favouring a more simplistic approach.
FORD MONDEO Starting price - £16,695 The Mondeo has been one of the most popular family saloons in the UK for a few decades now and it’s not hard to see why. Ford has established a solid reputation for building reliable and capable cars and part of that is based on the success of the Mondeo saloon. Boasting a large body and class-leading family size interior, the Mondeo has a boot size of 535 litres, easily surpassing rivals like the VW Passat (461 litres), the Honda Accord (460 litres) and Citroen C5 (439 litres). The Mondeo is also well built with high quality materials and offers plenty of decent specifications. The 1.6-litre TDCi Econetic range, offer a high economical performance as well with a recorded fuel economy of 65.6mpg and CO2 emission of 114g/km.
Honda Accord Starting price - £21,705 The Accord is a saloon veteran, having been around in one form or another since the eighties, in more recent times the saloon’s appearance has hardly changed but the interior and engines have been repeatedly upgraded to keep it fresh. This has culminated in the choice of three engines including a smooth, 2.0 litre i-VTEC petrol with 156bhp and a more punchy 2.4 litre version with 201bhp. Today the Accord is one of the more expensive options – with its starting price sitting above all the other saloons featured in our top ten, except the BMW 3 Series. However for those looking at a family saloon it is a decent option because of its reliability. In 2011 the Japanese automaker was named the most reliable manufacturer in the latest What Car and Warranty Direct reliability study for the sixth year running. Honda therefore carries a very good reputation in this regard, which helps in both resale and residual values. Well built and reliable, the Honda Accord is one of the most comfortable options around for a family saloon.
VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT Starting price - £19,290 Another saloon which has built a good reputation over the years is Volkswagen’s stalwart, the Passat, which has changed little over the years. Like the Mondeo, the Passat goes down a
Skoda Superb (2008-) Starting price - £17,675 Giving your car a name like ‘Superb’ sets high expectations, but Skoda has produced a saloon good enough to spare it derision. Boasting neat design and executive quality build, the Superb is packed full of standard
equipment and has some nifty features like a boot/hatch arrangement in the rear, which can be opened up at the touch of a single button, while the whole tailgate can also be raised separately – making it a rare example of the lesser-spotted ‘hatchoon’. The Superb is also longer than a lot of other saloons on the market, which could explain why it’s a firm favourite of private taxi drivers in the UK.
Vauxhall Insignia Starting price - £17,970 The successor to the competent but dull Vauxhall Vectra, the Insignia arrived aiming to carry over the strengths of its predecessor and add some more verve and sophistication while it was at it. That’s resulted in one of the best looking saloons on the market. It favours a sleek profile and raked design which looks far more dynamic than some of the boxier equivalents on the market, like the Toyota Avensis or Seat Exeo. Not only is the styling vastly improved, but the Vauxhall Insignia also uses high quality materials inside, which probably accounts for its increase in price when compared to the Vectra. Citroen C5 Starting price - £19,895 The large and smart C5 saloon is one of the most stylish family saloons on the market, pushing the Insignia hard for the title. Beyond that the Citroen brings more important reasons for ownership as well. The engine range includes highly rated HDi diesel units peaking with the most powerful, a 3.0 litre V6 with an automatic gearbox and 240bhp to boot.
At the opposite end of the scale, the C5 in VTR+ Nav trim can be fitted with a frugal 1.6 e-HDi 110bhp engine, offering a fuel economy of 61mpg while CO2 emissions stand at 120g/km. Its entry-level models come with plenty of equipment as standard, including electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, automatic air conditioning and a trip computer. Uniquely for saloons, the C5 has two suspension options including ‘top-specification’ for manual models and a ‘hydropneumatic’ for automatic models, to give passengers a more comfortable ride. Questions may be asked about the reliability or practicality of the Citroen, but the C5 can drive just as well as established names like the Mondeo or Passat - and do so with extra style and comfort. Peugeot 508 Starting price - £18,450 Peugeot saloons, like the 407, have been met with a mixed reception from motoring journalists and customers alike – with complaints received regarding their practicality and the quality of their interior and ride. However the French automaker’s latest offering, the 508 saloon, has been well received and reflects Peugeot’s recent improvements following the launch of the RCZ Coupe and 3008. Gone are issues concerning the interior with the 508 offering plenty of reliable equipment including cruise control with a speed limiter, Bluetooth and dual-zone climate control. Reviewers have also complemented the build quality in the interior which makes for a very comfortable ride, even on long journeys.

The home side did level things on 26 minutes when midfielder Declan McKeever created himself some space 25 yards from goal and his left footed drive, just bounced in front of keeper Buchanan, on it’s way into the net. Right on the stroke of half-time Stephen Hughes had a super chance to give his side the lead again, but his right footed shot sneaked just past Gallagher’s right hand post. Early in the second half a fantastic goalline clearance by Graham Crown kept the scores level when Mark Hughes’ well hit drive, which had Gallagher beaten, was somehow blocked on the line by the centre-back and Graeme Taylor was on hand to clear the loose ball.
