Five years old

Spring. The sun shines in all its fullness. The green meadows glow with the reflection of the drops of dew. Everything is calm and happiness. You can hear the birds chirping in the distance. But within Marco a storm of emotions, agony, loneliness and uncertainty has unleashed. He had never experienced these feelings. Crouched and hidden behind a bush, Marco feels guilty and thinks that he could have avoided it. - “Where are you? Don’t worry, Mom is not going to scold you. It’s normal you wet the bed sometimes. Go into the house for breakfast and go to school.” Manuel Atencia Mateo 1st prize Nivel Básico

The Small Pity The family said that the yellow and small canary was for you. When you visited your aunt and uncle, you dedicated me some time, you were `whistling` and you were playing with me. You thought that I was very alone. Your relatives were serious. They were about ninety. So you inherited me when they died. You thought that I’d die quickly because I was in a different place now and I was old too. That didn´t happen. You put me near a large window, close to flowers. There I like listening to other birds. Now Pepi lives happily with me!.

The young ant and the small crumb Three o’clock and once again, the little ant was sitting in front of my window. “Look at it! Impassive and without making movements. It looks as if it was waiting for the bus but I guess there isn’t a bus stop in the windowsill of my room! It’s been possible to see it at the same time and place every day since last weekend. One day, I decided to open the window and the clever ant came into my room. Skilfully, it picked up a small crumb, which I had not seen. This was the last time I saw it.

A RAY OF HOPE The day when the ground shook under his feet nobody seemed to be watching in the sky. Had the Father forgotten his children from that island? Suddenly, light turned into darkness. Only dust and rubble everywhere. How long has he stayed there? Who could hear his cries for help? Since that darkness came he tried to remember his Mummy’s smell and sweet kisses to put his fears away. He was sure Daddy and Mummy were looking for him and the end of that nightmare was about to start. A sudden ray of light and some voices made him smile again.

In my favourite landscape, driving along the infinite line of the highway. My life is the unfinished blues that is blaring in my car, a foolish and monotonous trip to nowhere. But suddenly, behind me, a silhouette moving forward at devilish speed. It’s getting closer and closer. An impressive Jaguar “Firebird”! And right now, overtaking me, it’s casting the burning image of a fascinating blonde in my wing mirror! Wow! The blues, boom boom boom boom, is the beat of my heart dazzled by so much beauty. A trail, fading away in the golden light of dust, my only aim.

SECOND CHANCE The room number one hundred and two of the Fátima Hospital is quiet. It’s shrouded in thin orange light filtered through the curtains. As always, there are fresh flowers on the table. As always, he’s sitting beside her bed, glad to be in her company once again. As always since one month, when the accident happened. “Darling, it’s time to go”, he tells her, touching her hair and kissing her cheek. She doesn’t reply. She never replies. She is down too deep. When he’s leaving the room, a hunch makes him turn to look at her. He believes in miracles.

Teras Manor I came to Teras Manor because of my thesis on E. Teras, the famous writer beheaded in his house a stormy night ninety years ago. I had read up on him and his fantastic, according to innumerable experts, library. As I entered the room, I sat on a lonely chair and started a book randomly chosen. Already it was dusk. It was raining heavily, with thunder and lightning. Curiously, the story was about the reconstruction of Teras’s death. I was immediately gripped so I could even hear his groans, a squeaking door, short steps approaching, something metallic near my neck…
