CROW’S NEST by Graham Nystrom Station Manager

W

elcome to fall! This is always a busy season for the station. We hold our annual Member Meeting and Breakfast along with Board of Directors elections. We do a pledge drive. I draft the operating budget for the Board of Directors to approve for the next fiscal year. It’s a busy time, even when not in the midst of a pandemic, wide-scale unrest over social justice issues, and a volatile election season. (Speaking of election season, tune in for our election coverage spelled out on page 3 of this issue of the Current.) In typical years, I think about things like the push to get teachers and students ready for backto-school time. I think about the weather in September and October (my favorite time of year) and then the coming winter months that will soon follow. I ask if I’m prepared for the cold? Am I prepared for inclement weather and power outages? This year is different. While the same tasks occupy my to-do list, this Fall feels different. There is a heaviness in the air, not just from wildfire smoke. There is tension in the air from small business owners doing their best to stay in business while customers do less-than-their-best to treat said business owners well. This Fall is challenging. I won’t sugar coat it. But what I will do is make an attempt to focus on what is going well and what I have control over. One thing I am making an effort to control is

my routines. I know that I am the most effective, happy and stable when I am working on projects or efforts that have personal significance and help me feel like I’m achieving my life’s purpose. This could be working on music, taking a walk in nature, helping friends with a project, or doing something exciting for KMUN. My personal energy gets out of balance if I’m not working on or toward something meaningful. When there is a void there, it often reveals itself by making me less patient and more critical. If I made a list of all the things I want to do and be, I don’t think a pandemic, a fire or a tense political environment could technically stop me from doing them. But what can stop me is losing sight of what is important to me, what gives my life meaning and what fills my heart with love and gratitude. This feels more like a journal entry than a newsletter article, but I hope it reminds you to dig deep for what you know to be true about yourself. If my routines help me, what helps you? This is not a rhetorical question. Send me an email (graham@coastradio.org) and tell me what you rely on these days to maintain your center, your balance and your passion for all the things that matter most to you in your life. Signing off in Carol Newman style by saying, “Cherish each day with love and gratitude.”

This goes into a pending file and is processed by staff who then okays it for the website. You will receive an email when this happens. Because our studios are closed, we are unable to provide on-air announcements. Please submit your event for the KMUN website listing as we are directing listeners there throughout the day.

used to quote (with a knowing sigh) karr’s line: “plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose” (the more things change, the more they stay the same) but clearly that ship sailed in 2020! To quote DJ Faberge: “The more things change, the more things *beep*ing CHANGE!”

“The more things change, the more things *beep*ing CHANGE.“

The word PIVOT has been used a lot lately. We had to quickly pivot and adapt our Spring Pledge Drive to sudden quarantine, and then pivot again for the fall drive (re-pivot?). We had to pivot when none of our programmers could come into the station and do their shows live, when the staff had to start working from home. When demonstrations were giving us hope (great turnout! young people!) and apprehension (bullies screaming at peaceful protesters). When the Post Office was threatened with dissolution. When HWY 101 was closed in parts and Bay City was evacuating. All of this needed to be broadcasted, our listeners updated and informed, and reminded that you are not alone. Here we are in October - pivoted and isolated, adapting and punch-drunk. Here are some of our pivoting tools - each one of them is available to us because of member support: home recording equipment - available to all programmers, Joanne and Kathleen broadcast the news live from home thanks to new equipment, Susan and my home offices are fully rigged with computers, webcams (for

the zooming), monitors, printers - whatever we need to do our jobs. Graham, Emily and Nevada have done incredible work at the station in preparation for the anticipated return of staff and volunteers (a second bathroom, increased ventilation, sanitation protocols) AND incredible new programming like Indigefi, Locus Focus, The Register and B’s House. Major pivoting - pretty much daily. Many days it feels like I’m in a three-legged race, but there’s no one actually tied to my leg, I lurch forward and stumble backward. Just trying to function. Some days the reminder that I’m not alone helps, other days not. Sometimes I get that I’m actually quite lucky and blessed, sometimes not. It’s the rollercoaster we’re all on. My co-workers and our fabulous volunteers help. My friends, family, community help. The river/bay/ocean help. Kittens help. Music helps. Our members help. Donations frequently include wonderful cards and notes - notes of encouragement, humor and gratitude. That’s when I really feel replenished during my work day. I share those notes with the KMUN staff and my kittens, and we all feel better for a moment. A voice from the darkness, saying - I’m listening, I hear you, thank you.

FROM THE NEWS DEPARTMENT by Joanne Rideout News Director

Musings from home, on the edge of the continental shelf

I have a small desk by a window in our house, with a couple of wooden foldable tables on either side to hold the gear and materials it takes to do the Wednesday through Friday Morning Edition and All Things Considered broadcasts, and the Ship Report. And for my partner, Jerry Middaugh, to do his music shows (Wednesday Folk, Sonidos Latinos and Shady Grove).

s i write this, it’s been close to seven months since we went into COVID-19 lockdown, when life took a big turn in different ways for all of us. Since then, I’ve been working at home for KMUN. I’m in the age group that would have a rough ride or flat out get killed by the virus, so I’ve been careful about contact with others, both for my own and my partner’s sake.

Here’s part of what it takes to make that happen: a rather expensive device called a “Tieline ViA.” It’s a piece of gear that in the broadcast industry is broadly referred to as a “codec.” Terry Gross uses something like this to do her segments for Fresh Air, for which, if I understand correctly, she too is never in the same room with the people she is interviewing. So this approach to radio is not new – just new to us at KMUN. The ViA hooks up to an ethernet cable, that connects to a modem, and that’s how the signal gets to and from the radio station when I’m broadcasting. I have a mic, a set of headphones and voila! I can be on the air by pressing a button and touch screen, and turning a few knobs.

I’ve gotten quite used to working at home, and to be honest, I’m one of those people who likes it. I can concentrate on my work without interruption, and sometimes can work any hours of the day or night that suit me to get things done. I’m very focused on what I do, so getting distracted is not much of an issue for me.

This ViA device will have a good long life at KMUN even after the pandemic is over. It’s ideal for remote broadcasting of events and other things outside the station studios. Many thanks to our innovative and amazing general manager, Graham Nystrom, for finding this device and the grant funds to purchase it.

But working at home is different from being at a workplace. I miss the one-on-one interactions with my lovely and excellent co-workers, and a Zoom meeting is no replacement for that contact, although it is nice to see their faces on my tablet during meetings. Still, I’m grateful for all the high technology that allows me that contact and also

allows me to broadcast live from home, and to record other content for later use. I’m grateful that I can continue working, and at something I love.

Many, many thanks, from my heart to yours, for being part of the solution. In a world where certain needed qualities seem in short supply these days, together we can be a beacon to the world that better Learning how to do all this relatively seamlessly has been a bumpy ride times will return, and a reminder that the qualities we love so much at times, which you know if you were listening in the early days of our about one another remain alive and well. transition at KMUN in March. If you are a regular listener and/or a member/supporter of the station through all this transition and disruption, we thank you so much for your support. Our staff and volunteers are committed to bringing you, as much as we can, the same wonderful radio we have always done here at KMUN. And it’s no secret that we need you to make that happen. You are part of the team that makes community radio successful and, indeed, possible. We aren’t exaggerating when we say we couldn’t do this without you. We have an ongoing, mostly silent, pledge drive going on, that is slowly raising the money we need to keep the station going. If you’re able to help, your donation would help us reach that goal. t was march 16th that I have showed up for my last day of work at the Tillicum House, home of KMUN studios. Three days earlier, the staff made a tough decision to pause the pledge drive, as Covid-19 issues were coming to a head. Everyone was sent home.

I gathered important folders, flyers and tools from my work area in the development room at the top of the stairs, said goodbye to my breathtaking view of the Columbia River and downtown Astoria. As I put boxes in my car and headed south to my home in Seaside, I mused how long I would be gone and how I was going to set up a work area at home. I was thinking it would be a month, two max. I set up my laptop and used my phone’s data as a hotspot. Late in 2019, I had gotten tired of paying $75+ a month to a large corporation for 2 hours of use a day and devised a plan for 2020 (ha ha, in hindsight, that is so amusing!) My plan was to turn off NetFlix, disconnect the Internet and read. Parts of that plan worked and other parts didn’t. I finished my 110th book of the year over the weekend. “Subirdia” is a fascinating book on birds in neighborhoods.

My plan for 2020 was to turn off NetFlix, disconnect the Internet and read.

After quickly using most of my data plan on Zoom meetings, (my plan has 35GB and an hour Zoom session takes about 3GB!) I had to bow to fate. I am once again paying for Internet services, but now I use it for 8-12 hours a day working, connecting with friends and family and taking the occasional class. In addition, it’s been a remarkable venue for taking birding classes and hearing lectures I did not have access to before.

Bringing your vision to life with quality craftsmanship

Thanks to the Radio For Good, a campaign to upgrade equipment at the station, there was a decent computer not being used. So, I have a decent size screen and I also have a remote phone that rings at the station number. It works through the Internet, so now I really am getting my money’s worth with that account. It’s not perfect. I miss the collaboration and contact with co-workers and programmers. I have a love/hate relationship with Zoom. And in the blessings column, I love my home; it’s always been my sanctuary. I love my job at KMUN. And I am healthy, as I hope you are too. Be safe and well, Susan

PROGRAMMING NOTES by Emily Geddes Programming Director

dear listeners, the last six months have been a bit of a blur. There’s somehow still one small cherry blossom petal stuck to the outside of my office window, reminding me every day that it’s been a whole six months since we started this new world order, but also that it’s only been six months, and yet so much has changed. Some of the changes I’m excited about here on our very own airwaves:

FALL 2020 THE CURRENT

Is it winter yet? depends on whom you ask. It’s fall on the coast, or is it? Soon it will be winter, but when? According to the calendar, autumn doesn’t start until late in September. Winter begins just before Christmas.

by Joanne Rideout

But long before those dates each year, we feel the crisp edge in the morning air that tells us a change of season is underway. For those of us navigating the transition from summer to fall (and fall to winter) on the coast, it can be a tempestuous time of year in terms of weather. We see the forecast seesaw back and forth: cool, hot, sunny, rainy, stormy. From the look of it, it’s hard to tell exactly what season we’re in. At this time of year, I like to talk about the two different kinds of seasons we experience here and everywhere on Earth: meteorological and astronomical. One has to do with weather, and the other with the stars.

its axis, as it goes around the sun. That tilt means that during some parts of the year, the top (or bottom) half of the earth is pointed either toward or away from the sun. That orientation gives us the different seasons, generally colder in winter (when our part of the earth is pointed away from our star, the Sun) and warmer in summer, when we’re closer to the sun. The exception is around the equator, where the temperature remains relatively stable. This tilted rotation of the earth around the sun, also means that when it’s autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s spring in the Southern Hemisphere. So while we are hunkering down for stormy fall and winter weather, our neighbors in Australia are welcoming spring and then summer. Astronomical seasons center around events called the autumnal and vernal equinoxes (when night and day are equal in length) and the winter and summer solstices (When either night or day are the longest of the year). During the equinoxes the Equator (the line that divides the Southern and Northern Hemispheres) is the closest it gets to the sun. During that time, everywhere on Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole will get the same amount of sunlight. Those times happen around September 21st and March 21st , depending on the year.

Meteorological seasons are for weather folk, scientists who monitor and predict the weather. For them, fall, for instance, starts long before the calendar says it’s so. In the Northern Hemisphere, where we live here in Oregon and Washington, meteorological autumn begins September 1st. Similarly for other Northern Hemisphere seasons, winter begins December 1st, spring on March 1st and summer June 1st. That divides the year into four quarters of mostly equal length. In many parts of the world ,this seems logical in terms of the weather, and how it feels.

The winter solstice (Dec. 21) is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, while the summer solstice here (Jun. 21) is the longest day of the year.

For astronomers, the start of seasons has to do with our planet Earth, and how she moves through space. The Earth rotates on an angle on

This stormy time of year (when it’s often just us locals here enduring the sideways rain) is, for some, the most cherished part of life on the coast.

So, there’s a short summary of the different kinds of seasons we have and why they happen. Here in the Pacific Northwest, meteorological fall and winter kind of slide into one another without much fanfare, usually accompanied by the wind and rain that define us as a temperate coastal region.
