Programs of ASM While the seasonal Sunday market is our centerpiece program, we have created other activities and events that also fulfill our mission. Past projects have included Winter Pop-Up markets, Commercial Fishermen’s Festival, Dog Day Afternoon fashion show fundraiser for Clatsop Animal Assistance, and the Rubber Boot Stomp raising awareness and funds for The Harbor.
Young Entrepreneur’s Club and Market Biz Kidz This is a collaborative project with Clatsop County 4-H to encourage young people to become entrepreneurs. We provide an annual workshops and online training where kids learn the basics of making, promoting and selling a product. During the season we provide tents, tables and other gear. The Market Biz Kidz vend together in one location. We also offer grants to those who vend five or more times and turn in a completed business plan and grant application.
Cruise Ship Markets
Mission
Astoria Sunday Market provides vendors at the Port of Astoria creating a festive welcoming for the Cruise Ships. The Clatsop Cruise Ship Hosts – a non-profit educational organization that provides more than 150 volunteers to welcome Cruise guests to our city – take the lead in this effort and work closely with the Market and the Port of Astoria.
The Astoria Sunday Market is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization formed to revitalize historic downtown Astoria and to improve the economic viability and vitality of farmers, artists, artisans and other small business operators in the Pacific Northwest. The Market is dedicated to creating a vibrant educational marketplace for the community benefit.

Thank you Guys & Dolls Beauty Salon!
In 2014 our vendors were gathered for an annual meeting where they sat in groups at tables. They were challenged with putting together a group painting or collage that depicted their ideas for “the color of fresh” at the Market. Six of those images were chosen for our poster and postcards promoting our season in 2019. There are seven different postcards in circulation – some are depicted in this guide – can you find all seven? AstoriaSundayMarket.com • 3

Makers & Growers Astoria Sunday Market is a Growers/Makers market. We take pride in our vendors who make or grow their products. When you shop at the market you are meeting the people who are directly involved with making what they are selling. Our vendors occasionally have agents who substitute for them if away (full-time vendors can use an agent up to three times), but even the agents are carefully selected who know the products well or have worked with the creator. We do our best to cultivate a wide selection of products, produce and artists to make the market an interesting and ever-changing place to explore.

Art of the Market Astoria Sunday Market uses original art from a regional artist for promotional materials. Here are examples from past markets.
ENCHANTMENT AT THE ONGO BONGO KLUB is typical of the humorous approach Americana Artist Bill W. Dodge takes to the world of felines.
Bill W. Dodge is Back!
2017 by Bill W. Dodge
Nationally known Americana artist Bill W. Dodge, who turned 85 this past February, has given up! No, not retiring - he's tried that before - actually 3 times - he's given up retiring Bill returns to the Sunday Market with the declaration he'll be there every Sunday of the season, not just the one Sunday a month schedule he has kept more recently. Additionally, he's expanding the distribution of his line of fine art signed and numbered Giclee numbered prints. In April he announced a new art association with Luminari Arts in downtown Astoria who will be responsible for marketing his original paintings as well as the fine art giclee prints. The Columbia River Maritime Museum will continue to exclusively represent all of the artist's Astoria/Columbia River scenes as they have done for the past decade (he has been at the Sunday Market almost since its inception, ranking him among the current longest original vendors.) For any "All My Children” TV soap opera fans, Bill will exhibit the last known copy of a print appearing in Cliff and Nina's TV soap opera apartment for four years (he provided art to the series for a 4 year period)

Bar-K Buckaroos July 21 The Bar-K Buckaroos play traditional western swing dance music in the style of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. The band is made up of north coast musicians, featuring Brad Griswold on Rhythm guitar, Dave Quinton on bass, Richard Thomasian on lead guitar, Tom Peake on drums and John Orr on pedal steel. Collectively these musicians have played in such notable north coast bands as The Floating Glass Balls, The Bond Street Blues Band, The Swingcats, Acoustica, and Ma'Barley. Together they bring their love of Bluegrass, Country, Jazz, Blues and Reggae to form a great evening of western swing and 20's-40's era swing music.
Brownsmead Flats July 7 & September 1 The Brownsmead Flats play acoustic music that may be best described as “Crabgrass” which they liken to a folk/bluegrass style with a maritime flavor. The band has a strong focus on vocal harmonies and many of their songs are composed by members of the group and reflect on living in the Pacific Northwest. A variety of instruments are played by the quintet. Dan Sutherland is featured on the hammered dulcimer, fiddle, and mandolin. Ray Raihala picks the banjo, guitar and mandolin. Ned Heavenrich plays harmonica and guitar. John Fenton keeps the band together rhythmically with the bass, and Larry Moore rounds out the group with his expertise on mandolin and occasional flashes of fancy foot work. The Brownsmead Flats create a festive atmosphere where audiences are encouraged to participate by singing along, doing hand motions, and participating in dances taught by the band. The versatility of the group allows them to generate music for audiences of all ages. Their tight harmonies and enjoyment of making music together translate into an event guaranteed to fill audiences with song and mirth. www.brownsmeadflats.com
Ron Burghard of CM Riders
Floating Glass Balls May 12
July 28 & September 15
The Floating Glass Balls is a lively string band that jumped the fence, ran off to unlikely places and brought music back for their coastal friends. This is a happy mix of Appalachia and Bayou Tech by way of Jamaica, Amsterdam and Astoria. They call it Beachgrass.
Ron has lived throughout the Western US (WA, MT, NM, CA, ID and Oregon for 35 years). He currently lives along the Nehalem River with his dog Cricket and horses Maria and Ruby. Although he has moved around a lot, he has maintained a place in Seaside for over 35 years, keeping his connection to Clatsop County. Thus, his music tends to reflect the West with emphasis on Western Folk and Classic Country Music.
Greg Parke The North Coast's very own 'Desdemona Jazz' features a world-class front-line of saxophone and guitar performing an array of styles ranging from traditional to complex, inspired by the major jazz composers from the '40s through '70s.

Portland based "Castletown" has a sound best described as "AmeriCeltic," blending the heart and soul of traditional Irish reels with modern folk, blues, jazz and country influences with singer/songwriter Heidi Beth Sadler on violin and vocals and singer/songwriter Robert Richter on guitar and vocals. They are known for their engaging and high energy live performances. Castletown’s new CD is titled “Traditions” and features 15 songs.
Dave Quinton & Brad Griswold Duo August 18 Play folk, country, bluegrass and swing on guitar, banjo and mandolin.
Bringing his popular mix of soulful ballads and feettapping dance music to the Market again this season! He features his own original tunes. www.gregparke.com

Rob Larkin & The Wayward Ones bring a fresh, edgy twist to vintage bluesy rock, flavored with funky soul and sweet Americana. Deeply influenced by the soulful vibe of 70s music, the band’s music is a mix of earthy grooves, sweet harmonies, and catchy hooks. Bill W. Dodge Americana Art 503-861-8137 bwdartst@gmail.com It was expected Bill W. Dodge would end up as an artist of some kind by virtue of his birthplace on February 21, l934: a motion picture sound stage in the Charlie Chaplin Film Studio at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and La Brea Avenue, Hollywood, California. Dodge's father, George, was a member of Chaplin's lighting crew. As the artist explains: "Mom went to pick up dad from work and, as I tell friends, dad was late and I was early." Bill is a talented and highly regarded artist making Astoria his home for over two decades.

Astoria Sunday Market is a dog-gone friendly place. We are also a bustling and lively affair so not all dogs will be wagging their tails during their stay. If you have a nervous dog or one that is not well socialized please consider leaving him (or her) at home. Here are a few Doggie Doo-do’s and Don’ts to help make your visit more enjoyable for yourself, your pup, the vendors and all the other good folks visiting the Market.
1. Short Leash Please keep your dog on a short leash and do not use retractable leashes. The Market is a crowded place and it is easy for other visitors to trip over leashes (or your dog).
4. Inquisitive Noses 2. No Doo-Doo Allowed Please be sure your dog has been thoroughly walked in an appropriate area before coming to the Market. If your dog has taken care of his business at home he or she is less likely to need a relief at the Market. If Mother Nature does call, please PLEASE clean up after your dog. We have doggie-emergency cleaning kits at the Cargo Trailer by the Food Court and by the Portable Office parked at Duane and 12th.
3. No “tinkling” on vendor products or tents! (One would think this doesn’t need to
BAYBREEZE-BOARDING.COM B AYBREEZE-B
be spelled out but alas…) Please curb your dog. Some of our vendors charge dog-owners a cleaning fee of $50 or more and the Market supports them in this endeavor.
Dogs follow their noses, especially around food. We request that dogs and their noses be kept away from our food vendor booths. We suggest having a partner sit with the dog at one of the tables while you find your favorite snack or meal.
5. Not Everyone is Nuts About Mutts Please remember that not everyone loves dogs the way you do and some people may even be afraid of dogs – especially the large breeds. No matter how sweet and adorable you know your pooch to be, please be respectful of others.
We strive to maintain a fun and pleasant environment for everyone and with your cooperation we can continue being dog-gone friendly! AstoriaSundayMarket.com • 15
