Crossroads Information
Director’s Report
After a whirlwind of events these past two years, it seems a bit odd to go back to the “usual” routine, including Fall Events, Oktoberfest, and an ever-changing Gallery.
This summer has been a momentous one for Crossroads and for my family! On June 17th, Kerry and I welcomed our first grandchild, Cooper Jay Savage, born in Colorado to our son, Blain, and his wife, Whitney. What a joy he is to our lives, and we have been back and forth to soak up every moment of sweet baby time that we can.
So, in between baby visits, we are moving forward into the new normal of Crossroads and our partnership with the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive, as well as the new Lone Pine Mercantile Gift Shop. This includes our expanding role in writing grants to support our collective work.
I am blessed to have a wonderful set of employees who allow me to focus on the larger issues of our work and know that the day-to-day details of Education, the Gallery, Membership, and the Pottery Studio are being managed by fantastic people.
Enjoy the beautiful Fall days coming to Baker County!
Ginger Savage Executive Director
Crossroads & Dementia Friendly
Crossroads is thrilled to partner with Dementia Friendly Baker County this September to host a series of meaningful events aimed at celebrating and raising awareness for individuals living with dementia and other memory challenges, as well as their dedicated caretakers. Our mission is to connect with as many people as possible and provide a supportive and engaging environment.
Throughout the month, we’ll be offering a variety of creative activities designed specifically to engage and benefit those with memory challenges. Participants can look forward to creating beautiful flower mandalas, decorating masks, and engaging in general painting activities. These creative outlets are not only
therapeutic but also offer a way for participants to express themselves and connect with others.
The artwork produced during these activities will be proudly showcased at the Family Life Center in the Nazarene Church on October 19th. This event will provide a wonderful opportunity for participants to display their creations and share their experiences with the community.
We invite everyone to join us in this celebration of creativity and awareness. Your participation and support will help illuminate the challenges faced by those with dementia and their caretakers, fostering a greater sense of community and understanding. Stay tuned for more details!
The mission of the Crossroads Carnegie Art Center, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit founded in 1963, is to create opportunities for the entire community to be engaged, inspired, and transformed by the arts through participation in classes, workshops, exhibits, mentorships, and partnerships – A welcoming place where people meet and the arts speak.
Announcements from Crossroads
Last-Minute Learners
Since the beginning of the year, Crossroads has made and introduced various changes to our Education Department. One of these is the strict adherence to the minimum number of students that must be enrolled in a class for it to be taught, ensuring that our instructors are compensated fairly. To correspond with this, Crossroads is introducing a new initiative, something we like to call “Last-Minute Learners.”
Crossroads is creating a list of dedicated individuals who are willing to be contacted on short notice to fill the last spot(s) needed to meet our class minimums. By stepping in when needed, these “Last-Minute Learners” will play a pivotal role in ensuring that no class is canceled unnecessarily. This not only supports our instructors but also guarantees that our community members don’t miss out on valuable learning opportunities.
Participating in the Class Hero program is a chance to deeply engage with and support our community at Crossroads. It ensures that all scheduled classes proceed, benefiting everyone involved—from instructors who can share their knowledge to students eager to learn. If you’re interested in becoming a Last-Minute Learner, please reach out to us here at Crossroads!
Thank You Volunteers
Volunteers are the foundation of Crossroads Carnegie Art Center, often acting as the unseen pillars that uphold our favorite art center! With their dedication and passion, they keep the wheels of creativity in motion—whether through facilitating exhibitions, spearheading fundraising efforts, or inspiring art appreciation among our visitors.
These amazing members are key to preserving all the art traditions we have at Crossroads, and they’re always ready to welcome new creative ideas and projects. By donating their time, they allow us to use our resources to bring you new and exciting exhibits and classes.
Our volunteers foster greater community engagement with the arts, and their commitment ensures that art remains an accessible, vibrant, and essential part of our community. We are deeply grateful for their contributions, which not only enrich our programs but also enhance our community. Through their continued dedication, volunteers at Crossroads help guarantee that art continues to thrive and inspire, making it an integral and enduring part of our community life.
If you’re interested in volunteering at your favorite local non-profit, feel free to stop by!

Intro to Polymer Clay
Come get a crash course introduction to the versatile medium of polymer clay! Known best by the brand names Fimo and Sculpey, this oven baked clay is easy for beginners and yet it is used by serious professional sculptors, too. Artists use this clay to create art dolls, wildlife figures, home décor, jewelry, and even for techniques resembling painting and quilling. We can’t possibly do it all in one 2-hour class, but we’ll sample some of the most popular techniques and go over the most frequently asked questions. Students will leave with a small sculpture and a budding addiction to this colorful medium.

Try Something New!
Learn to Draw
Have you always wished you could draw? Have you hit the stage where loving art is turning into frustration at not being able to make something “look right”? Drawing is a foundational skill for nearly all visual art disciplines and one of the most effective tools for communicating that exists. The good news is that drawing isn’t an inborn talent! It’s a skill based on observation and techniques that just about everyone can learn. If you can see, hold a pencil, and sit reasonably still for an hour, you have all the prerequisite skills needed for this class. Your often mentioned or lamented abilities, or lack thereof, regarding stick figures and straight lines will not be tested, so what are you waiting for? Sign up!
Supplies: Sketchpad (the inexpensive ones from Bi-Mart are perfectly fine), pencils, eraser. A regular #2 pencil and a white eraser are fine to start.
Students may wish to purchase a variety of drawing pencils of different hardnesses, or to experiment with ink pens after a few classes, but neither are necessary.

Making Millefiori Canes in Polymer Clay
If you love patterns, you’ll love exploring millefiori canes! The technique in polymer clay is essentially the same that is used by glass artists to make beads and objects with repeating patterns. Once you know how to construct a basic cane, you can use the technique to create everything! From simple checkerboards to realistic faces, though the latter is going to take a lot more practice than we’ll have in this 2-hour class. And what do you do with these canes? Create jewelry, magnets, beads and more from individual slices, or use the slices to create patterned sheets that can become things like clothing and fabric for future sculptures.

In this class we’ll build a tiny table with simple side chairs, create a small bank of cabinets, and install a kitchen sink. A Successful Summer!
Towards Home: The Art of Gary Ernest Smith –A Massive Success
We thank Gary, his wife Judy, and their whole family for such a wonderful experience. There were more successes than one can count, but I will highlight just a few!
The comments about the Towards Home Banners on Main Street have been overwhelmingly positive and we so appreciate Baker City Downtown’s investments to make this and the flowers possible! Thank you to the volunteers who are watering every single day!
We thank everyone from the Grand Opening to the Agricultural Dinner, to Gary’s Mural Talks, to those of you who came by Crossroads to meet and chat with Gary during the exhibit. What a joy it has been see so many people inspired by Gary and his life’s work.
Thank you to DDRC Marketing and all the efforts they put into sharing the story of the show, including our social media successes, the cover of Western
Art Collector Magazine, and the surprising success of the Towards Home Table Tents we put up at local restaurants. According to our guest book, guests have been coming to Baker City from all over the US!
Thank you to all the school groups, tour groups, clubs and organizations that came and celebrated Gary’s story and his work!
Now we get the honor and pleasure of representing Gary as one of his galleries. The impact of our marketing will continue for months and years ahead. The legacy of our Inspiration Series, a series of inspiring videos from those in our community, will motivate and inspire another generation of community members and our young people.
Again, thank you all. Crossroads could not be more grateful for the support you have shown us.
The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is open! The beautiful Grand Opening event on May 24th was a success after years of being closed for renovations, and Crossroads is thrilled to be the Friends Organization for the Interpretive Center.
The Lone Pine Mercantile has opened to rave reviews and is thriving! We are continuing to learn and grow as we get more feedback from tourists and our community. Caroline Chalmers, our gift shop manager, has curated an excellent selection of items suitable for
everyone! She has been fantastic, and every day, she is adapting and fine-tuning the Gift Shop for our guests. We thank Ellie Lamb, our Part-Time employee, for her steadfast work helping bring the shop to life.
We are so pleased to support so many local and regional artists, crafters, small businesses, and wonderful Oregon brands in the gift shop and keep our dollars local.
The Interpretive is open seven days a week all summer long! Stop by, visit the center, and check out the Lone Pine Mercantile!

October: Spanning Time, Paintings in Wax
Will Roundy and Leah Svendsen, longtime friends of 42 years, are bringing us a delightful encaustic exhibition in October. Both born and raised in Wallowa Valley, they have spanned Kindergarten through High School in Joesph through struggles and joys. Twelve years ago, they went to Whitefish, Montana, to learn encaustic painting from Shawn Moore. In the show, Roundy explores time through seasonal color pairings in his ethereal abstract pieces. Svendsen comments on time concepts, mostly the present moment, through representative works. Currently, Roundy operates Beecrowbee, a bath and beauty products store, where he has shown his art for the last 20 years. Directly across the street, Svendsen has operated a gallery, home décor, and furniture shop, showing her own artwork, as well as 20 different local artists. Friendship is a powerful bond, and we are fortunate to have two artists exhibit together and share in a rare medium that is sure to impress.
November: People & Places, Children of the World
Gina Cole and Bonnie Preacher are Boise-based artists who bring the human figure to the canvas in provocative ways that instigate an emotional reaction and cause the onlooker to pause. Cole’s work is focused on impoverished children living and working in the slums of Bangladesh and brings to light the struggles of their lives. Faces are her forte, and she draws on her own experience growing up in Bangkok to reveal the inner world of her subjects. Preacher draws from her travels and the human figures she paints could be a tender moment in time to a more heightened emotional experience, always depicting the vast range of humanity from around the world. Preacher writes, “In my paintings, I strive to achieve an accurate likeness, but even more important to me is to paint a feeling.” This exhibit will surely strike a nerve somewhere in your body as we celebrate the human form and tune in to the emotion akin to us all.
December: Christmas at Crossroads!
Calling all artists to submit to the December open show “Christmas at Crossroads”! We participate in the season by bringing together artists and artisans to present a unique gift-shopping opportunity for the public. The items can be holiday-themed or not, but must be for sale. We will also have our holiday card contest winner’s card packs available. Those of you interested in entering the contest can receive the criteria and entry form in September. The artwork will be judged, and a winner chosen at the end of October with printed cards available for purchase at November’s First Friday. We love to decorate the gallery and generate the holiday spirit with original artwork in a variety of mediums and support local artists. It is a winwin when you can find a unique gift for a loved one and support the community. Give the gift of art to family or friends, as it is always a special moment when your gift is one of a kind.

Gallery
What a year so far! And with so many exciting exhibits coming up, 2024 is a standout year for Crossroads. A variety of mediums will be represented in the coming summer and autumn, including an encaustic show in October. We love to exhibit a wide breadth of work and support the local art community while also exposing Baker to new and different work with traveling shows like RJ Kern’s exhibit “The Unchosen Ones,” which will strike a chord with locals as its 4H theme hits home. It will be a great show for the whole family. In November, we will exhibit a figurative show with two painters who focus on the human form and dive into emotional experiences we can relate to and empathize with. Our favorite, the September Open Regional, is an excellent opportunity for local artists to display, sell their artwork, and win a total of over $2500 in cash prizes! Enjoy music and art on First Fridays here at Crossroads, make it a routine, and don’t miss a show!
