Clatsop County’s high schools all boast track and field athletes worth watching this season. Warrenton and Astoria have potential state qualifiers and champions in distance running, while Seaside and Knappa have strong sprinters and jumpers.
For the Fishermen, Quin Gohr returns in the 400-meter race, and Orrick Evans will be running the 100 and 200.
The Fishermen girls are looking to reload their state qualifying 4x100 meter relay team and junior sprinter Sophie Saarheim is expected to run well in the 100, 200- and 400-meter races.
In the distance events, William Laman is the standout for the Fishermen and is looking to build off his record-setting cross-country season in the 1,500 and 3,000 meter races.
In the field events, Adrian Balli and Thomas Burpee will be names to watch in the shot put, discus and javelin.
For the girls, Roberta Chavez will look to build off her impressive freshman campaign in the javelin and discus, while Eva Espelien, Madeline Williams and Maevri Bergerson will be three of the jumpers to watch.
For Seaside, the standouts are Ryder Jackson and Maddie Menke. Jackson is coming off a second place finish in the 100-meter dash at the state meet last season. His 11.06 was second only to Jason Padgett, of North Bend. Jackson also set a personal best of 22.49 in the 200-meter dash last season, while finishing sixth at state. He will also be a feature on the Seagulls 4x100 team this upcoming season.
Menke is coming off a state-qualifying berth in the 3,000 meters and a breakout year in the long jump and high jump. She will be joined in the jumps by Ella Clyde, Clover Bellew and Bailey Jones.
On the track, Seaside sprinters Lillian Morris, Mya Feeney, April Angeles, Ariana Rojas Mora and Lili Miller will look to build off their times from last season and compete for spots on the 4x100 relay team.
The boys distance runners will be led by Henry Rollins and Kyle Weichal.
The standout for Warrenton this season will be school record holder Jayden Warner.
After breaking his own school record multiple times during the cross-country season, the junior will look to continue his momentum on the track. He enters as one of the favorites to win a state title in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters.
The Warrenton girls boast a strong group of sprinters in Brenna Qualm, Frances Taggart and Kimber Parris. Payten Buckelew leads the Warriors in the distance races.
The Loggers usually bring a strong contingent of distance runners to the track, and this year is no exception.
Wyatt Jacobson, Josh Peterson, Oskar Peitsch, Rowdy Justus, Soren Brown and Orrin Jacobson all return from the state qualifying cross-country team. Jacobson is hoping to finally bring home a league title to Knappa, as he finished second in both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters last year in Eugene.
Jasper Teague will lead the Loggers’ jumping contingent, while Parker Stevens returns after winning the 2A state championship in the shot put last season, although he may be feeling the effects of a knee injury during basketball season.
The girls will be led by Kendall Jackson, Emma Jackson, Aemlia Graham and others on the track. Annabelle McDorman and Nadia Gremer return to lead the Loggers in the field events. McDorman is coming off qualifying for state in both the shot put and discus.

With just one player graduated from last season’s state championship roster, the Warrenton Warriors baseball team is set up for an encore.
Baseball
Fresh off the school’s first state title in 30 years, Warrenton returns a strong senior class led by the McGrorty twins. Tyson will serve as the catcher, while Talon will pitch and play shortstop. They are joined by fellow seniors Ryder Sturgell, Brayden Greenawald, Kaison Smith, Odin Wilson, Blake Tingstrom and Wyatt Bond.
The Warriors also return younger players who contributed down the stretch last year. Ryan Palmer and RJ Thornton lead the sophomore contingent, while Zephan Pierce will lead the juniors.
The Warriors will have stiff competition from Banks, Valley Catholic and Horizon Christian in what likely is the most difficult league in all of 3A.
The 2A state runners-up will enter this season looking to replace much of their pitching staff from last year.
Strong senior pitchers helped the Loggers to a 24-5 record last season, but Jaxon Dietrichs, Treven Moreland and Kutter Ball have been lost to graduation. Younger players such as sophomore Oliver Stevens will lead the pitching staff, which includes senior Lukas Masters, junior Blake Miller and Jude Miller, who can help on the mound if he’s not playing shortstop.
In addition to replacing some of their pitching, the Loggers need to find a replacement to Ash Baldwin behind the plate. The catching duties will most likely be split by Karson Casper and Ethan Olson.
After going a perfect 21-0 in league last season, the Loggers once again return as the favorites in the 2A-Northwest League.
The Fishermen will once enter Cowapa League play chasing Scappoose and St. Helens.
After finishing 10-15 and 4-8 in the debut season for coach Andrew Higgins-Feyen, Astoria hopes that it can continue improving behind junior pitching duo Joey Gramlich and Dallas Norris.
Gramlich and Norris will do much of the heavy lifting on the mound this season after the graduations of Merrick Benesch, Colton Gustafson and Patrick Anderson. The Fishermen will turn to Archer Hawkins to replace Teague Palmberg behind the plate. And after the graduations of Garrett Hillard and Patrick Anderson, the Fishermen will need to replace two of their three outfielders from last season.
The Seagulls might be the team to watch in the Cowapa League this season.
After fielding a team with 11 freshmen and two sophomores during head coach Brett Wolfe’s first season, Seaside looks to be well-positioned to compete as the team lost just one senior.
Hayden Halsen established himself as the Seagulls’ top pitcher at the end of last season and will be joined by other promising hurlers. The Seagulls had 14 players listed as pitchers on their roster last season, which will give Wolfe and his staff lots to work with.
Despite finishing last in the Cowapa League at 3-9 last season, the Seagulls should be in the mix with St. Helens, Astoria and Tillamook scrambling for the second-place spot behind defending state champions Scappoose.
The Astoria softball program is coming off one of the program’s best recent seasons.
After surviving a three-way battle with Scappoose and St. Helens to win the Cowapa League, the Fishermen came up just short in their semifinal game against Henley High School. Though the Fishermen have two big positions to replace, they still seem well-positioned to make another run at a league title.
The Fishermen still have a potent top of the lineup with Kya Lindell, Hailey Svensen and Nayomi Holmstedt, so the team should score lots of runs.
But the team will be without first baseman and cleanup hitter Shelby Bruney, as she is still recovering from a knee injury suffered in the summer. The Fishermen also will need to replace catcher Fionna Duryea, as she was the lone senior on the team last season. With pitcher Maddie Wilkin returning for her senior season, the Fishermen are set up to match St. Helens, Scappoose and other top 4A teams on the mound.
The Knappa girls softball team is set up to make a run at a 2A playoff bid this season.
After just missing the state tournament last season, the Loggers return every girl from the 2024 squad. Senior Taylor Pass and Sophomore Ayla Burnett will be handling the pitching this season, while junior Kiya Roe returns as catcher.
Mylie Lempea will lead the outfield, while Jocelyn Tarabochia and Lily Simpson will control the infield at shortstop and first base respectively.
The Seaside softball team is continuing its rebuild under second-year coach Chris Corder.
Last season the Seagulls went just 1-11 in Cowapa League play, but the team will have two veterans, Carly Corder and Lydia Klumper, returning to the mound.
The goal for Seaside this season is continued improvement and closing the gap on the top teams in the Cowapa League.
Warrenton softball enters the 2025 season with a lot of new pieces.
After the graduation of Emma Smith, Anjolena Wakefield, Jaz Short and Kaylie Poe the Warriors were hoping to have younger players on the roster fill those roles, but injuries and transfers have taken a toll.
With London O’Brien and Lucy Smith moving away and injuries to Kiki Olson and a couple other players, the Warriors enter the season with questions at both the pitching mound and other positions. The Warriors do return catcher Natalie Pike, Emma Stevens and Sadie Smith and they’ll be called upon to lead the team. After finishing fourth last season, the Warriors will look to close the gap with Valley Catholic, Banks and Rainier High School.
The Columbia River Bar Pilots would like to show their support for all the local high school sports.
Seaside boys’ golf enters the 2025 season with high expectations.
After qualifying for state last season and finishing in sixth place, the Seagulls return four out of their five scorers. The team will be led by seniors Alex Arden, Logan Norman and Madden Wunderlich, while junior Xanh Quang looks to build on his strong sophomore season.
Junior Landon Nofield will be one of the golfers looking to step into the vacated spot that was occupied by Diego Sanchez. Nofield was on the varsity roster last season, but wasn’t among the top five scorers.
The Fishermen return all five starters from last season’s eight-place team at the district tournament. Astoria will be led by seniors Ian MacHone and Jake O’Connor. Benjamin Murdock returns for his junior season after clocking the lowest score at the district meet last season for the Fishermen. Junior Sawyer Rochon and Sophomore Ty Cereghino round out the five-man team.
The Warrenton boys return four out of the five scorers from last year, including the Warriors low scorer, Calvin Olson.
Olson finished 16th at the 3A District 1 Tournament last year and helped Warrenton finish sixth out of nine eligible teams. He will be joined on the team by seniors Tyler Simonsen and Jacob Lewis and sophomore Jackson Bellone.
Story by Paul Matli
The Seagulls enter 2025 with a full squad of returners from last season.
Makenna White, Kylie Kernanen, Reagan Hartnett and Lolly Rahl all return. They are joined by fifth- and sixth-place golfers Hayley Archibald and Angela Wang.
White was the low scorer for the Seagulls last season and looks to be that once again. Hartnett will be looking to build off a strong freshman campaign in which she finished ninth at the Cowapa League championships.
The Fishermen will be searching for a new batch of scorers to replace the six seniors lost to graduation.
The six seniors — Aspen Braaten, Marlee Both, Maya Portillo, Darby McCleary, Mia Rochon and Jacklyn Dietrich — were part of the eighth-place team at districts last season.
With all of them gone, a group of fresh faces will have to step up for Astoria this season.
The Warriors return low scorer Jezalynn Sturgell and two others from last season’s 10thplace team at districts.
Savannah Bigelow and Kaidynce Daniels will join Sturgell on the tee and greens this season.
Warrenton will look for a replacement for senior Amanda Nairn, who was the Warriors’ fourth scorer at districts last season.
