Wildhorse
Resort & Casino
Now fully open with additions and expansion including an iconic Western store in Pendleton and Family FunPlex near casino Story by John Tillman
• Photos by Ben Lonergan
Wildhorse Resort & Casino is back to normal operation, bigger and better than ever, 5 miles east of Pendleton, off Exit 216 on Interstate 84. Recently, the resort has further emphasized entertainment for all ages with the opening of its new Family FunPlex. Wildhorse also acquired a second golf course south of Pendleton and a downtown shopping-dining complex off its main campus, both historic. Events, music and comedy have returned to its venues, as well. Wildhorse Resort was closed for several months early in the pandemic. Upon reopening with masks required and at lower capacity, it weathered the perfect economic and health storm better than stand-alone restaurants, hotels or airlines. “We’re a casino,” Wildhorse spokesperson Mary LibertyTraughber said. “At times there were lines waiting to get in.” The resort has a lot to offer besides slot machines and table games. It expanded during the pandemic, with the FunPlex addition in 2020. This bright, airy space features a food court, 24-lane bowling alley and new game arcade. Quaking Aspens Lanes includes eight boutique lanes adjoining two rooms for private parties.

Pizza and bowling have proved a popular combination, with the sights and sounds of arcade games enhancing the exciting atmosphere. Shortly before the pandemic, Wildhorse made two big acquisitions away from its Interstate 84 location on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, owner and operator of Wildhorse, in 2019 bought at auction the famous Hamley & Co. complex in downtown Pendleton. It consists of a saddle shop, Western store, cafe, steakhouse, saloon and event space. The Hamley family founded its saddlery and store in 1905. Wildhorse also in 2019 acquired the Golf Course at Birch Creek, 7 miles south of Pendleton. It’s the oldest course in Umatilla County, founded in 1928 as the Pendleton Country Club, remaining private until 2014. Located at 69772 S. Highway 395, Birch Creek winds through the par 72, 6394-yard course offering 18 holes
of golf, practice facilities, fitness center, swimming pool, a full bar and restaurant, with a newly remodeled banquet room. Under the tribes’ management, its fairways and greens are better maintained. Retired Army colonel and Pendleton resident Tim Kelly and his wife Barbara now consider Birch Creek “one of the nicest courses in the country, since it has been fixed up.” “I didn’t golf much before marrying her, but we’ve played all over California, Oregon and other states. We live part of the year at Lake Tahoe. We’re not good enough for the Wildhorse course,” Kelly said. The casino itself has been upgraded with new, taller and glitzier slot machines. “We still have old ones, too,” LibertyTraughber pointed out. “If we replaced them all, some of our long-time guests would be unhappy.” Wildhorse has set up eight Tesla electric car charging stations, of up to 150 kilowatts, as well.
8 • Discover Eastern Oregon 2022 • EastOregonian.com
The resort has been a boon to Umatilla County, providing work to local people of all ethnicities. “We’re still hiring,” Liberty-Traughber said. “I encourage everyone to apply.” She administers the Wildhorse Foundation, which before the pandemic granted charities $1 million per year. The community also supports the resort’s operations This year, Wildhorse will rely on volunteers to help run its tournament on the 21-event Epson LPGA Qualifying Tour, Sept. 2-4, held right before Pendleton Round-Up week. A pro-am event on Thursday, Sept. 1, will precede the $200,000-purse Wildhorse Ladies Classic. The expected 2,000 international attendees will need accommodation in or near the city. Wildhorse had hoped to build a second hotel tower in 2020 as well as opening the FunPlex, but construction costs were too high to fund both projects in a pandemic year. Future expansion will also include enlarging administrative space.
Origins, 1994-95 Wildhorse Resort & Casino grew from humble beginnings in 1994 to become the hospitality and leisure dynamo of Eastern Oregon.

Present operations
Wildhorse is the leading destination in its region, annually welcoming 750,000 guests from far afield, before the pandemic. In addition to its rows of slot machines, the casino offers poker, roulette, blackjack, craps, Spanish 21, bingo and keno. Even before the mask mandate was lifted the next day, a surprising number of guests graced the casino floor at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Mar. 10. Wildhorse Golf Course features the Clubhouse Bar and Grill. The recentlyacquired Golf Course at Birch Creek includes The Grill restaurant and bar. Inside the resort is the Wildhorse Sports Bar, a new food court, Traditions Buffet and Plateau Fine Dining and more. The Hamley & Co. complex in downtown Pendleton includes the cafe and steakhouse restaurant. The steakhouse was one of six in Pendleton to receive Small Business Administration grants under the 2021 Restaurant Revitalization Fund, a coronavirus relief program. With hundreds of other Pendleton area businesses, Wildhorse Resort also got a Paycheck Protection Program loan. The resort sparked an economic boom for the reservation. Wildhorse is largely responsible for increasing the tribes’ operating budget from less than $10 million in 1992 to $326 million in 2021. Not just Wildhorse, but other reservation enterprises and agencies have also greatly benefited Umatilla County in general. “If COVID stays under control,” Mary Liberty-Traughber concluded, “we’ll be in great shape.” Wildhorse Resort & Casino will continue growing in the future, generating income, fun and good will in Northeastern Oregon.
In 1988, Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, allowing American Indian tribes to supplement their revenue with gambling establishments. The traditional cultures of the Cayuse, Walla Walla and Umatilla peoples include games of skill and chance, so the Tribes deemed building a casino a natural fit. The business started as a row of temporary modular buildings in a wheat field, with 78 employees and only 100 slot machines. The permanent facility opened in March 1995. Now, 27 years later, Wildhorse employs almost 1,000 people and offers 1,200 slots, an 18-hole golf course and a 10-story hotel.
Recreation

in Umatilla and Morrow counties
Communities in Eastern Oregon strive to provide numerous recreation opportunities, including public aquatic centers and parks. One of the area’s brightest gems is Hermiston’s Funland Playground. This is the third version of the park, originally built in 1996. The first playground burned down in 2001 and its replacement burned down in May 2019 in a suspected case of arson. Due to Funland’s history with fires, the new structure was built with fire-resistant materials and features surveillance cameras and other systems to further deter vandalism. The Funland Playground features a variety of play structures, including three main zones: the Wild West, Adventure and Farmland. In addition to original playground structures, the playground features a soft, rubbery play surface that has been designed to complement the various areas of play. And you will find structures at this parl unique to the region, such as giant slices of watermelons — a symbol of Hermiston’s agricultural economy — for children to play on.

Dining Out in Hermiston Hermiston’s food scene in the last five to 10 years has exploded and continues to grow, just like its population. A town that once offered standard fare you could find most anywhere has added Thai and Japanese to the menu. And the most recent dining option is one of its most exciting. The Hermiston Food Pod is operating at 240 S.W. Third St. The pod is the city's response to the residents, who wanted an area for food trucks. The soft opening in January began with just a couple of trucks, but now it’s in full swing, with nine vendors as of mid-April. And locals wasted no time digging to the varieties there, including Filipino food, American offerings, breakfast burritos and boba tea. $ — Entrees below $12 $$ — Entrees from $13-$20

Bars, breweries and wineries in Umatilla and Morrow counties Just as dining experiences have been on the rise in Eastern Oregon, places to get a brew or cocktail abound. Some establishment have only opened in the past few months, such as the The Vault Tavern in Pilot Rock, which, as you may have gusses, showcases a big antique vault. And others are as iconic as they come, such as the Rainbow Cafe in downtown Pendleton, home to eclectic neon decor and one of the few remaining cash-only operations around (don’t worry if you forget that, there is a cash machine inside).
