Dear KMUN As supporters of KMUN for the past twenty years or more, we were thrilled to receive Graham Nystrom’s message letting us know that we can now receive a strong signal at 89.3. We have been able to remove unsightly antennae, unstring wires from the window shades, and put to use radios that have told the time in the LED display panel but produced little more than static. We can now wake up to Exploring Music followed by Morning Classics and listen to Morning Edition with breakfast. Weekends are made special with my favorite World of Bach and one of Rex’s favorites Celtic Aire. We extend our gratitude to all those who volunteer at KMUN and to others who join us in supporting an essential community resource. -Diane Amos north side Cannon Beach

The Tillicum Foundation is tax-exempt and all gifts, grants, and contributions to it are tax deductible to the extent of the law. KMUN broadcasts 5000 watts of power at 91.9MHz from its main transmitter on Megler Mountain, 250 watts from a translator located in Cannon Beach, and 10 watts at 104.3 from a translator in Wheeler and 91.3 from a translator serving Astoira’s south slope. KTCB broadcasts 400 watts of power at 89.5 MHz from Cape Meares, serving Tillamook County. Tillicum Foundation also operates a second program service. That’s the beauty of recurring gifts; they keep coming and we keep being grateful for them. So, a big Thank You to everyone in our community, especially our 2,000 members, and an extra cherry on top for our Monthly and Annual Sustainers.

Development Director Susan Peterson and Board Member Todd Lippold have been out picking up trash on Highways 26 and 101. Combining a passion for KMUN and having a healthy environment, the small but enthusiastic crew have been out with their safety vests and yellow bags, cleaning up along the first two miles of Hwy 26 and for two miles north of the Del Ray Beach turnoff on Hwy 101. That is where you will see the signs denoting the happy adoption!

In preparing for the interviews, we refreshed our understanding about the meaning of a ‘liberal education.’ The word ‘liberal’ originates in the Latin word, ‘liberalis’ which references ‘freedom’ (originally ‘free man’), and the word ‘ars’ which refers to an art, craft or skill. Therefore, we are interviewing community educators who are grounded in the art or skill of creating, understanding, and maintaining our shared human freedoms. Educators are key to healthy communities and social wealth.

We thought interviewing during COVID would be more difficult than it’s been. We do take sanitation and social distancing seriously, which means that I sanitize all the equipment before and immediately after each interview. I also sanitize the table we sit around. The recorder sits in the middle of the table, and the microphone cords are long enough to keep us at safe distances from each other. Overall, ensuring safety should not be a challenge, but these simple precautions have led to the greatest success, which is the willingness of others to be interviewed during these crazy days. The interviews have been inspirational! We have many talented educators in our community. Sharing this wealth of information has been another delightful success!” Margaret Frimoth & Sara Meyer

the confusing and deadly nature of Pacific Northwest coastal summers OME THINGS BEAR REPEATING, not

because they’re so brilliant, but because they’re so sadly true, and not enough people are listening. And while I like to talk with you in these articles about interesting aspects of life at sea, today I want to draw your attention to something important and critical about this beautiful place where we live and visit. Our Pacific Northwest summers with their glorious blue skies and sometimes downright hot weather, have a dangerous downside that visitors to our area, especially, tend to forget: hot weather and cold water make a deadly combination.

Already this spring, we’ve seen two young people lose their lives in the surf, one off the Long Beach Peninsula, and one off Cannon Beach. Kids who, on a warm day, decided to go into the cold ocean to wade, body surf or swim, and were lost to their families and friends forever.

Every year we lose people in the water here for reasons that are utterly and maddenly preventable. We warn people to be careful of this and that, but it doesn’t seem to take. So I’ll say it again as clearly as I can: most people should NOT go swimming here. Here’s why you should not swim in our ocean waters here in the Pacific Northwest:

The water’s too cold. The ocean water temp off Clatsop Spit is a chilly 59 degrees F. as I write this. If you end up in that water over your head, you will quickly lose the ability to maneuver. Also, rip currents are everywhere in the surf. If you’re suddenly caught in one, it will pull you out to sea like an express train. It will be hard to get back on your own. If someone sees you in trouble, they’ll call for help, but time is not your friend in the cold water.

So what can you safely do here? You can wade up to your ankles in the water. That’s it. Under those circumstances, you will probably be able to save yourself if a strong undertow grabs your feet. It’s a simple thing, but it will save your life. My message again, as clearly as I can say it: DON’T GO SWIMMING HERE. You may see people in the water anyway. Don’t envy them – they’re playing chicken with the ocean, a very bad bet and the ocean usually wins. If you see people surfing, take a close look: they’ll be wearing wetsuits, and are likely experienced and strong swimmers who know these waters well. The beach is a wonderful place to be, and the waters are tempting. Don’t be fooled. It’s simply too dangerous. And the price is too high. For the sake of those who love you, stay on the beach. We want you to stick around to enjoy our beautiful beaches for many summers to come.
