CROW’S NEST by Graham Nystrom Station Manager

Cannon Beach Translator News It sure is exciting to be the one to put the finishing Cannon Beach Translator on and off for touches on a project that required so much time, several years now, I am absolutely thrilled attention, effort and funding. I’ve said it before, to report words have evolved into concrete action! and I will say it again, that we are standing on the shoulders of giants who built this station, It’s time to find KMUN on the dial in Cannon and put the pieces in motion to deliver this Beach and Arch Cape on 89.3FM. “...we are standing on the shoulders of giants who built this station...”

Dear KMUN As supporters of KMUN for the past twenty years or more, we were thrilled to receive Graham Nystrom’s message letting us know that we can now receive a strong signal at 89.3. We have been able to remove unsightly antennae, unstring wires from the window shades, and put to use radios that have told the time in the LED display panel but produced little more than static. We can now wake up to Exploring Music followed by Morning Classics and listen to Morning Edition with breakfast. Weekends are made special with my favorite World of Bach and one of Rex’s favorites Celtic Aire. We extend our gratitude to all those who volunteer at KMUN and to others who join us in supporting an essential community resource. -Diane Amos north side Cannon Beach

FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CORNER by Janet Fryberger Membership Director

The Cream of the Crop EMBERS ARE THE LIFEBLOOD of

Coast Community Radio. Truly! This radio station is nothing without its community aka our listenership, our volunteers, our staff and board, and especially our members.

“Knowing we can depend on that support really helps us plan our budgets.”

But that’s enough math! Knowing we can depend on that support really helps us plan our budgets. It is something tangible that we can work with and that brings peace of mind. That’s the beauty of recurring gifts; they keep coming and we keep being grateful for them. So, a big Thank You to everyone in our community, especially our 2,000 members, and an extra cherry on top for our Monthly and Annual Sustainers.

And Sustainers are the cream of that crop, the icing on that cake, and the knees on those bees! I’d like to say thank you to all our Sustainers, monthly and annual, past, present and future. Sustainer gifts fund major change here because we Information about KMUN Sustainerships can be can predict and budget for a significant part of our found at kmun.org or write me at membership@ kmun.org income. And that makes a huge difference. From June 1, 2020 to June 1, 2021, 398 monthly Sustainers donated 3,800 gifts totaling $53,900. And our 21 annual Sustainers donated $4,110. That’s $58,010 that we needed and received last year and can count on again this year – if not more! Twenty-five percent of our Sustainers also gave additional gifts to Radio for Good and during pledge drives.

Your contribution today helps KMUN offer what only local public radio can successfully achieve THE VOICES OF THE COMMUNITY FOR THE COMMUNITY. YOUR SUPPORT MAKES IT ALL POSSIBLE. COAST COMMUNITY RADIO

KMUN Adopts Local Highways MUN LISTENER LEVI LIPPOLD,

Development Director Susan Peterson and Board Member Todd Lippold have been out picking up trash on Highways 26 and 101. Combining a passion for KMUN and having a healthy environment, the small but enthusiastic crew have been out with their safety vests and yellow bags, cleaning up along the first two miles of Hwy 26 and for two miles north of the Del Ray Beach turnoff on Hwy 101. That is where you will see the signs denoting the happy adoption!

Pictured KMUN ’s Development Director Susan Peterson and a truck full of trash after a couple hours along Hwy 101.

Todd’s view is: “It’s fun, good exercise and exciting to take a little ownership of a couple stretches of highways that we can put the station’s name on and maintain for our community. Maybe, when people see the signs or us out there cleaning, it will make a positive impression about keeping our environment natural, clean and beautiful.”

is newly remodeled and open! Wednesday - Saturday 10 am - 4 pm

Feel free to tune into KMUN 91.9FM as you cruise on cleaner, happier highways.

PROGRAMMING NOTES by Emma Geddes Programming Director

New Summer Programming on KCPB! UE TO A 2020 distributor change,

the price for On Point (previously on KCPB) was set to become prohibitive at the start of July of this year. In searching for a quality replacement that also fit within our rural, independent station’s budget, we were able to work with WNYC Studios, who already bring

you RADIOLAB on both KMUN and KCPB, to acquire their full radio catalogue – some of which you may already be familiar with. This has allowed us to open up the time slot to some wonderful variety, and we’re thrilled to bring the following shows to you, starting July 1st, in the 12-1pm hour on KCPB:

MONDAYS: FREAKONOMICS RADIO

“This has allowed us to open up the time slot to some wonderful variety...”

SUMMER 2021 THE CURRENT

Discover the hidden side of everything with Stephen J. Dubner, co-author of the Freakonomics books. Each week, Freakonomics Radio tells you things you always thought you knew (but didn’t) and things you never thought you wanted to know (but do) — from the economics of sleep to how to become great at just about anything. Dubner speaks with Nobel laureates and provocateurs, intellectuals and entrepreneurs, and various other underachievers. TUESDAYS: NEW YORKER RADIO HOUR The New Yorker’s editor, David Remnick, presents a weekly mix of indepth interviews, profiles, and short bursts of humor. This show will keep you entertained and informed with delightful variety and high caliber production. WEDNESDAYS: ON THE MEDIA WNYC’s weekly investigation into how the media shapes our worldview. While maintaining the civility and fairness that are the hallmarks of public radio, OTM tackles sticky issues with a frankness and transparency that has built trust with over one million weekly radio and podcast listeners.

THURSDAYS: ON BEING WITH KRISTA TIPPETT Pursuing deep thinking and moral imagination, social courage and joy, to renew inner life, outer life, and life together. The On Being Project is a nonprofit media and public life initiative. FRIDAYS: SCIENCE FRIDAY (LIVE!) Covering the outer reaches of space to the tiniest microbes in our bodies, Science Friday is the source for entertaining and educational stories about science, technology, and other cool stuff. You can listen live to KCPB in Astoria at 90.9 FM, or online from anywhere in the world at KMUN .org/KCPB!

Around Our Schools NE OF OUR NEWEST local public affairs programs, Around Our Schools – engineered by longtime KMUN volunteer Margaret Frimoth, and hosted by Clatsop Community College Board Member Sara Meyer – brings you all the latest in our local education network. Find out more from Sara and Margaret below, in their own words.

What made you want to start Around Our Schools? What need do you see it filling in the community? There is such good and needed sharing of what happens in our schools and unless you are closely involved you rarely know what is going on. Around Our Schools is an effort to inform the greater public of programs, finances, and the people that provide the educational resources. CONTINUED ON PAGE 16...

Thank you, Reverend Tim! KMUN wants to send a heartfelt thank you and bon voyage to our long time Backbeat and Classic Rock & Roll captain, Reverend Tim. Tim has volunteered with KMUN for more than a decade, bringing you his very particular flavor of offbeat music selections and the best of the classics. We are going to miss hearing his dulcet tones on the airwaves, but are so excited for his next venture in central Oregon! Around Our Schools CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13...

In preparing for the interviews, we refreshed our understanding about the meaning of a ‘liberal education.’ The word ‘liberal’ originates in the Latin word, ‘liberalis’ which references ‘freedom’ (originally ‘free man’), and the word ‘ars’ which refers to an art, craft or skill. Therefore, we are interviewing community educators who are grounded in the art or skill of creating, understanding, and maintaining our shared human freedoms. Educators are key to healthy communities and social wealth.

We thought interviewing during COVID would be more difficult than it’s been. We do take sanitation and social distancing seriously, which means that I sanitize all the equipment before and immediately after each interview. I also sanitize the table we sit around. The recorder sits in the middle of the table, and the microphone cords are long enough to keep us at safe distances from each other. Overall, ensuring safety should not be a challenge, but these simple precautions have led to the greatest success, which is the willingness of others to be interviewed during these crazy days. The interviews have been inspirational! We have many talented educators in our community. Sharing this wealth of information has been another delightful success!” Margaret Frimoth & Sara Meyer

Hot and Cold:

the confusing and deadly nature of Pacific Northwest coastal summers OME THINGS BEAR REPEATING, not

by Joanne Rideout

because they’re so brilliant, but because they’re so sadly true, and not enough people are listening. And while I like to talk with you in these articles about interesting aspects of life at sea, today I want to draw your attention to something important and critical about this beautiful place where we live and visit. Our Pacific Northwest summers with their glorious blue skies and sometimes downright hot weather, have a dangerous downside that visitors to our area, especially, tend to forget: hot weather and cold water make a deadly combination.

“[We] tend to forget: hot weather and cold water make a deadly combination.”

Already this spring, we’ve seen two young people lose their lives in the surf, one off the Long Beach Peninsula, and one off Cannon Beach. Kids who, on a warm day, decided to go into the cold ocean to wade, body surf or swim, and were lost to their families and friends forever.

Every year we lose people in the water here for reasons that are utterly and maddenly preventable. We warn people to be careful of this and that, but it doesn’t seem to take. So I’ll say it again as clearly as I can: most people should NOT go swimming here. Here’s why you should not swim in our ocean waters here in the Pacific Northwest:

SUMMER 2021 THE CURRENT

The water’s too cold. The ocean water temp off Clatsop Spit is a chilly 59 degrees F. as I write this. If you end up in that water over your head, you will quickly lose the ability to maneuver. Also, rip currents are everywhere in the surf. If you’re suddenly caught in one, it will pull you out to sea like an express train. It will be hard to get back on your own. If someone sees you in trouble, they’ll call for help, but time is not your friend in the cold water.

So what can you safely do here? You can wade up to your ankles in the water. That’s it. Under those circumstances, you will probably be able to save yourself if a strong undertow grabs your feet. It’s a simple thing, but it will save your life. My message again, as clearly as I can say it: DON’T GO SWIMMING HERE. You may see people in the water anyway. Don’t envy them – they’re playing chicken with the ocean, a very bad bet and the ocean usually wins. If you see people surfing, take a close look: they’ll be wearing wetsuits, and are likely experienced and strong swimmers who know these waters well. The beach is a wonderful place to be, and the waters are tempting. Don’t be fooled. It’s simply too dangerous. And the price is too high. For the sake of those who love you, stay on the beach. We want you to stick around to enjoy our beautiful beaches for many summers to come.

Hi KMUN , Many thanks from the Uniontown Association for your broadcast, on Memorial Day of the 2021 Memorial Day service. While we were not able to hold a service at the Memorial Park this year, it was wonderful that KMUN made it possible for the community to still ‘attend’ the service. We are deeply appreciative. I believe I heard that the broadcast might be available on your website. If so, where would I find that? Best regards, Scott McMullen
