The Tillicum Foundation stands firmly against racism in all its forms. KMUN is your local source for high quality and thoughtfully curated programming, from our news and public affairs to music and entertainment. It is our duty to provide this in a way that is conscious of implicit bias, systemic racism, and societal inequities. In our programming, we will: - Evaluate new programming decisions based on our mission statement in order to amplify oppressed and underrepresented voices in our community and beyond. - Monitor our current programming offerings and practices, looking at where we can make improvements to better represent a variety of identities and viewpoints. - Seek out programming that will fill in our deficiencies. - Create equitable access to our programs and services. In our administration, we will: - Create a staff, board, and volunteer base that reflect our community. - Provide our staff, board, and volunteers with opportunities for inclusive conversation and training on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice and how these issues pertain to our personal lives as well as our work at the station.

We hope that you will join us in this effort to create a more just future.

Our region is rich in history, but that history is also fraught with oppression, inequity, and injustice. We must collectively address the effect this has on our present. The following Tribes and organizations are doing this work locally and regionally. This list is neither exhaustive nor definitive. Please consider learning more about their efforts and how you might be able to help support them. Chinook Indian Nation Clatsop-Nehalem Confederated Tribes of Oregon The Harbor

– THOM YORKE FROM THE BENDS

Three months have passed since our last issue of the Current. I wish I could say a lot has changed for the better since then, but you know the deal. There is still a pandemic, and there is still great social unrest around acknowledging and addressing institutionalized racism. We are conflicted by the nature of the challenges we face as well as how to respond to them. The station staff and volunteers continue to engage in a practice of listening and learning, followed by what we hope is a cohesive, compassionate, positive, forward-looking approach to leading discussions around these topics. The last few episodes of our live call in show “The Conversation”, which I have the honor of hosting most Fridays, have focused on these topics. Here are some questions the staff is asking itself. Where do we go from here? How do we move forward as a community of Americans to address equity, inclusion and justice? Is this about legislation, or is this about internal and person-toperson work? What are our tools and who are our allies? How do we create understanding? How do we have patience, knowing that the work will take a while? Community building has always been the station’s work, but now the rubber hits the road, and it feels more “real” somehow. I think we need to address the lack of community among Americans. We’ve been politically and ideologically divided and conquered by the corporatocracy and its self serving arm we know as “mass media” or “the news”. No federal government who prioritizes corporate interests over its citizens can create a healthy society or

SUMMER 2020 THE CURRENT

economy. Our food supply and our education system are two major casualties of this. No law can bring us together in understanding. We have to do it in our moment-to-moment interactions, both with the people we know and the people we don’t know. We also have to do it with the people we love and respect, and with the people we don’t love and respect. We can disagree, but we must not tear each other down. It’ll take time, patience and perseverance, but we can build something new and something better. Community schools and community farms seem like two great places to start. Fix the food and fix education, and then see what happens. It all starts with gathering around the table. Maybe KMUN can be that table? I dare say that in many ways it already is; in fact, that is why is was created in the first place. So please stay healthy, stay safe, stay positive and stay tuned to your Coast Community Radio station. “I want to live, breathe, I want to be part of the human race.” – Thom Yorke from The Bends

FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CORNER by Janet Fryberger Membership Director

I

don’t have to tell you how crazy the world is these days but, at least at this writing, fish gotta swim and birds gotta fly and KMUN’s gotta have a pledge drive and raise $50K! So that’s what we’ll do mid-August through mid-September. We won’t be interrupting our programming with air room pitching. We will not have a bevy of fabulous volunteers sitting by the phones, waiting for your call. We can’t! The station is closed to DJs, volunteers and visitors. Plus - the news, music and public affairs we provide are too important right now to usurp!

Less asking, more giving. Instead we’re opting for a quieter, gentler Fall Pledge Drive. In March, when our Spring Pledge Drive was so rudely interrupted by a pandemic, we switched to short air spots throughout our regular programming day and met our goal in 2 months. Air spots that let you know we need your support but they’re short and non-interruptive. That’s what we mean by quieter and gentler. We have faith that our listeners “get it.”

Listen. Care. Give. Repeat. We’re shut into our homes for who knows how long, we need deep reliable reporting, we need connection to one another. KMUN and KCPB are always here for you, and we need you now more than ever too. The station has been hit hard by losses in underwriting and anticipates further losses. Yet we expanded our news team from one part-time staff member to 1 full and 1 part-time reporter. Quite a bit of equipment was purchased in order for our DJs to record their programs at home. We need your support to continue the vital work we’re doing; providing news and public affairs, music and entertainment.

We ask quietly, you give loudly!

“I am already a monthly contributor but here’s a little more. You’ve become even more valuable to me during the “shelter in place” period. Esp. the early wake up music. Love the way you have brought us such pleasure.“ – LLYN DE DANAAN, SHELTON, WA

FROM THE NEWS DEPARTMENT by Joanne Rideout News Director

I

’ve been doing our local news broadcast from home for a few months now, getting the hang of whatever passes for the new normal these days. We’re fortunate to have the capability for live remote broadcast (many thanks to our manager, Graham) and remote access to the station’s computers. It means I can bring you local news, much like what we used to do live from the Tillicum House in Astoria. This summer you will hear another, additional voice on the air hosting morning and evening news. Kathleen Morgain, whom long time listeners will remember, will take up news hosting duties soon, also broadcasting from her home, in Washington. We’re happy to be able to offer you local reporting and hosting from both states in our listening area. There is so much constantly shifting news in these pandemic times, it’s really wonderful to have a seasoned professional like Kathleen back on our staff. She used to be the regular morning news host for the station a few years back. Now

she’s rejoined us as a reporter and host. You’ll soon hear her on Mondays and Tuesdays. Veteran reporter Jacob Lewin continues to do stories for us, and we now have partnerships with these area news publications: The Astorian, Chinook Observer, Seaside Signal, North Coast Citizen, Wahkiakum County Eagle, Tillamook Headlight Herald, Tillamook County Pioneer, North Coast Citizen, Cannon Beach Gazette and Clatskanie Chief. These news outlets have agreed to partner with us, to allow us to share their stories on the air, with attribution. It’s a great way to work together to maximize our reach and bring you stories from around the region. And we continue to be part of the Northwest News Network, long a source for great regional reporting. Whatever the coming months will bring, we’ll do our best to bring you up to date reporting on stories that matter in our region.

F

irst, i hope you and your loved ones are well. I hope you have found your way to handle not only physical well being, but emotional and mental health as well.

FROM THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM by Susan Peterson Development Director

Here are KMUN, we have all found that as well. Through remarkable leadership and knowledge, Station Manager Graham Nystrom has summoned his super powers to keep us on air with an empty studio. News Director Joanne Rideout quickly pulled together a great news team of volunteer Jacob Lewin and, now back with us part time, Kathleen Morgain. Membership Director Janet Fryberger pivoted when the well planned Spring Pledge drive ended 3 days into a 10 day drive. In the end, the quieter drive was successful through online

and mailed donations. Thank you to all who donated! New Program Director Emily Geddes was shifting into her big position on the staff and was able to grow and change quickly in the ever changing process of keeping a radio station on air 24/7. I couldn’t be more proud of the whole group of staff, volunteer, listeners and members. In the coming months of this unprecedented time in our lives, my focus will be on continued collaborations with businesses, including nonprofits and government agencies. It takes a community to have a community radio station and I feel very fortunate to live in this one. take good care, susan

An Introduction

G

reetings readers of the current & listeners of coast community radio,

I am the newest addition to the KMUN Staff, signing on as the Operations Director. With the station being closed I’ve been unable to meet the countless volunteers and wonderful individuals who make up the KMUN Community. I look forward to the times when it is safe for us to gather again in the Tillicum House and resume our live broadcasting like it previously was. In the meantime, we’re making some organizational changes and technological upgrades to the station that I’m very excited to be a part of and for you to hear. We find ourselves in a tumultuous time: caught in the midst of a Global Pandemic while The Peoples’ voices call for monumental change across the country. We are on the heels of what might be the most important Presidential Election of our generation. Radio’s role and responsibility as a critical channel of communication has never been more relevant, or important. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of your station and to help continue the legacy of quality radio on the North Coast. “The power of radio is not that it speaks to millions, but that it speaks intimately and privately to each one of those millions.” – Hallie Flanagan

PROGRAMMING NOTES by Emily Geddes Programming Director

T

“Thank you for your excellent programs. You constantly provide a wealth of useful information and entertainment and details on current local events. Where would we be without you?“

his order of operations has been my primary source of direction through the turbulent summer of 2020. As we all learn, grow, and chip away at our broken societal systems, staying humble and positive is a challenge. Avoiding the quicksand of defensiveness and ego is a solo game of tetherball, but when I look at the forward motion that is happening in the world writ large, in this second civil rights movement nestled within a pandemic, I do feel optimistic. What does this have to do with radio? It’s our job, and our mission, to amplify voices that are systematically repressed within our community. It is also our responsibility to continually assess our work, and to evolve. A small, tangible example of this is our recent decision to say goodbye to Old Time Radio, and to welcome Indigefi in its place. Though we respect our radio roots, we believe that Indigefi is able to bring our listeners something they haven’t heard before, which, in radio, is worth its weight in gold. Host Alexis Sallee (Iñupiaq/Mexican American) features

contemporary and traditional indigenous musicians, alongside high quality interviews. Catch it on KMUN every Tuesday, 3-4pm. This small pivot is admittedly a drop in the bucket. We have our work cut out for us, but this work is worth every ounce of sweat. We look forward to growing with you toward a more equitable way of being, here on our coast and beyond. The following playlist is specifically formulated to give you the motivation to keep fighting the good fight, even when it feels like you’re bashing your head against the wall. (It’s also explicit, so use it wisely, friend.) As always, take two heaping servings and call me in the morning. My top 5, all time, very best songs for doing The Work while maintaining your sanity:

ROCK & ROLL

I

’m all set. My laptop is plugged into the recording equipment, the volume levels are set, and all I have to do is pass go.

I’m in the middle of a marathon. Nine radio shows in five days. That’s my goal. It’s not particularly daunting. I program shows the same way I listen to music. I pick out that first song, which leads me to the next and the next, and before you know it, two hours have flown by. I miss the audience interaction I get when I’m at the station on a Sunday afternoon. The phone is ringing and Debby’s taking those request calls. There’s a rush that comes with trying to keep up that frantic pace. I try my best to simulate that feeling here at home. I’m sitting in my living room. For the next hour, I’ll be locked into this position. I gaze through my window at a spectacular view of the river, the sun slipping down under the Megler bridge. A frosty mug sits on the table. Rules are bent a little during this pandemic. I slip on the headset and crank up the volume in my head. After all, this is rock and roll! reverend tim

SUMMER 2020 THE CURRENT

Messing About in Boats by Joanne Rideout

W

e live in an area of the world that is so lovely on a nice day, that it truly qualifies as paradise. It’s no wonder people want to head out on the water to “mess about” in boats.

So few things to keep in mind if you’re out on the water this summer, whether it be a canoe, kayak, paddleboard, sailboat or motor boat: • THE WATER HERE IS COLD ALL YEAR ROUND.

While water can warm up a bit in sloughs and tributaries off the main stem Columbia, chances are it’s going to feel really cold if you fall in. So dress for the water temp, not the weather. Wetsuits are a good idea - you can get a shortie that covers up the main core of your body and leaves your arms and legs free. That way you’ll be protected if you end up in the water. It will buy you time if you fall in, and give you some buoyancy.

• SPEAKING OF BUOYANCY, WEAR A PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE (PDF). There are plenty of new designs that aren’t bulky and will keep

you safe. The most important thing a PFD will do is keep your head above water while you wait to be rescued, or while you swim to safety. In cold water (see above) this is essential. You don’t want to be wasting your energy trying to swim without flotation, and you’ll lose mobility fast in our cold water temps. PFDs save lives.

• THE CURRENT IS STRONG IN THE RIVER.

In most waterways here there is current, both downriver and tidal current. It can be overpowering for small craft. Don’t expect to be able to paddle against an ebb or rising current in the river. Even small boats with engines can be overpowered by a heavy ebb and sailboats can sail backwards. Get yourself a tide app or table and get to know places where the current is strong. If you get caught in it, you can lose control of your craft and possibly capsize, or get pulled out to sea, or both.

• LET SOMEONE KNOW YOUR PLANS.

The Coast Guard calls it a float plan, but it doesn’t have to be elaborate. Just tell a friend when you’re going, where you’re going, and when you expect to be back. That way if anything does happen and you can’t call for help, someone will know to check on you and, if needed, get help on its way to you.

• GET A VHF RADIO.

Don’t rely on your cell phone to call for help if you get in trouble on the water. Cell towers are aimed on land and you’ll be lucky if you can get a signal once you get offshore. The Coast Guard monitors the emergency Channel 16 on VHF, and will be able to use your signal to find you, even if you can’t tell them exactly where you are.

Thank you for broadcasting 30 minutes of poetry this morning. It was lovely. I am looking forward to tomorrow’s poetry time with Robert Michael Pyle. I am certain there are listeners in your audience who would tune in for a regular poetry show, even when it is no longer National Poetry Month. dayle olson
