We get that comment quite a bit from visitors to KMUN because there is a unique clock outside the studios that prompts interest. Finally we have a wonderful story to share.
T TOOK 40 YEARS to get the backstory out about the clock in Tillicum’s rotunda. Thanks for asking- though I’m wishing I wasn’t pushing 70-years-old & having a very foggy head due to health issues while writing this.
I had heard about a community radio station that was going to become a reality when I moved to Astoria in 1979. I had been an avid listener of Antioch University’s WYSO- Yellow Springs, Ohio, radio station during my high-school years in Dayton, Ohio.
KMUN was going to be birthed on April 17, 1983. Even though I hadn’t worked on the launch, I had been thinking of what to gift this very special birth. Who would have thought that the gift I was looking for would come from the Astoria City dump.
Back in the early 80’s Mark Herke and I would break into the dump after hours. It was scary physically, but also the thought of getting caught and being arrested was intense. But…there were free treasures there that needed rescuing. Many treasures would be hauled to the side of the road to be picked up by us in Mark’s truck that had been parked nearby.
On one of those nights the perfect gift for KMUN had been found!! An incredible vintage clock!! It had radio transmission towers on the front glass. The glass covering the neon light was missing but
with my stained glass skills I’d had since 18 while living in German Village, Ohio, I immediately envisioned a stained glass KMUN. There were empty banner images I saw that needed words. I got lettering at ABECO and started designing.
Amazingly, the clock worked when it was plugged in at home. The neon light worked. It seemed like a miracle. After the stained glass and all the lettering and slogans were fitted it was a sight to behold.
O YOU LOVE KMUN and want to support its mission of providing highquality community radio programs that enrich the life of locals and visitors? If so, the Tillicum Foundation Board may be the place for you.
The Tillicum Foundation is accepting applications for roles on the Board of Directors. Applications are due Sept. 15 and can be accessed at kmun.org/ tillicumfoundation/.
The Board is the governing body of KMUN that is responsible for fundraising, policymaking and fiscal oversight.
The Board is volunteer-run and includes nine positions, including four office roles (president, vice president, secretary and treasurer). Starting this year, Board members will serve three-year terms. Some positions will be available for oneyear or two-year terms though, to ensure that the entire Board isn’t up for re-election at the same time for future elections.
Candidates will be announced via electronic ballots that will be sent out on Oct. 3. Each KMUN member will receive their ballot via email. Paper ballots will be available at the Tillicum House. Voting will close Nov. 4 in time for KMUN’s annual general meeting. Event details are to come- stay tuned!
Board meetings are held at 5 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Attendees are welcome to attend the meeting in person at the Tillicum House or online via Zoom (visit kmun.org/ tillicumfoundation/ for log-in credentials).
Whether you are a longtime listener to KMUN, a donor or a volunteer, we hope that you consider applying to join the Board. We hope to add a group of new Board members who are dedicated and thoughtful people that come from varying backgrounds.
For more information, please visit kmun.org/ tillicumfoundation/ or email board@kmun.org.
“We hope to add a group of new Board members who are dedicated and thoughtful people that come from varying backgrounds.”
A decade later while in Seaside, Oregon, at Phillip’s Candy I saw a clock that was a sister to the KMUN clock on a back wall. No one knew anything about it. Not too many years ago the candy shop changed hands. I spoke with both the seller and the new owner. Unfortunately no one knows what happened to that clock, but it is gone.
My goal is to have a small metal plaque made with a little inscription of what its history is. I’ve tried everything I know to research the clock and have found nothing thus far. Maybe one day there will be more news, but for now, it was and will always be the most perfect gift to the best radio station in the world!!!
KMUN is happy to be including a free children’s concert in our 40th year celebrations. Join us on Saturday, July 19th, at Quatat Park in Seaside. Red Yarn is a favorite of kids, and popular with kids at heart, weaving together folksongs and puppetry for a fun, lighthearted, engaging celebration. An added bonus: Clatsop County’s very own Brownsmead Flats joins in on the festivities, performing traditional and original songs in the Crabgrass tradition. Music begins at 11am.
OVE THE NORTH OREGON Coast? Love radio? KMUN seeks an enthusiastic, selfmotivated team member to be responsible for the on-air signals, audio streams, and all information technology infrastructure at the station. If you are proficient with computer hardware and software, we can teach you the rest.
KMUN is a listener-powered, volunteer-operated community radio station serving the Lower Columbia Pacific Region with local and national news, public affairs and music. KMUN has approximately 1,200 members, 120 volunteers, 7 staff members, and reaches a potential audience of 85,000 listeners across 5 counties in rural NW Oregon and SW Washington. ID YOU MISS KMUN’S birthday party bash in April? The cupcakes? The dance party? The birthday band’s jumpsuits and side ponytails? Well never fear, there are several ways you can keep celebrating 40 years on the air with us this summer.
One party wasn’t enough so we’re throwing a block party with our neighbors in Astoria on Saturday, July 29th from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. We’ll take over the block right below KMUN’s home, the Tillicum House, located between 14th and 15th Streets on Exchange Street. The event is free and open to all ages — everyone is welcome!
There will be music, food and drink, lawn/street games and lots of fun activities brought to you by some of KMUN’s extended family of local nonprofits and arts and culture organizations. The block party is presented in collaboration with Fortune & Glory Cider and Fort George Brewery.
But that’s not all…Since the station’s beginning in 1983, we have insisted that KMUN is for kids too — and in August there will be an event especially for them.
Join us on the Seaside riverfront for a concert at Quatat Park on Saturday, August 19, featuring Clatsop County’s own Brownsmead Flats and special guest Red Yarn (aka Andy Ferguson), a Texas-born, Oregon-based family performer. Red Yarn’s shows weave together folksongs and puppetry into a raucous, inclusive celebration.
This is a free concert and everyone is invited to attend. The music starts at 11 a.m.
Keep an eye on kmun.org and the KMUN Facebook page — and, of course, tune into KMUN for more information about these events in the coming weeks.
Katie Frankowicz KMUN News Director“....we have insisted that KMUN is for kids too...”
WAS HOUSE SITTING ON the coast in the winter of 1987 and listening to KMUN. I did not know that the voice of one of the leads, in a locally produced soap opera that I listened to weekly, belonged to Jim Dott. An on air invitation to help clean out the basement of the newly gifted Tillicum house seemed like a good way to meet like-minded folks. Liam Dunne, always one to promote the station, encouraged me to “go on the air” and invited me to come to the Gunderson Building while he was hosting a folk show. I got an impromptu lesson on cuing up records that day. Within a couple of weeks I was filling in on midday slots called Open Air. I was hooked.
KMUN used to have a radio show called Saturday Buffet that aired for a couple of years. It was started by Alan Yankus. He played classical guitar music twice a month and they were looking for others to fill the remaining nights. Jim Dott took one of the nights playing classical guitar, new acoustic and New Age music. I gladly said yes to a once-a-month show and was subbing for folk shows and occasionally jazz. I had met Debbie Twombly as part of the Women’s Music Collective and joined in helping to celebrate Women’s History Month. April rolled around and I was getting ready to return to Seattle. Ancient Future came for a concert hosted by KMUN at the Maritime Museum. I was talking with Debbie and Jim joined us. Her comment was, “You two know each other from Saturday Buffet, right?” Unlike Bedtime Stories readers and Women’s music programers our group had never met. We like to say Debbie Twombly introduced us. It was just intermission and I packed up and left a few days later. Back in Seattle, I knew Debbie and other
Brownsmead folks were coming up for Memorial Day Weekend and Folklife. I met up with them at a marimba band concert. Jim was there dancing around with Zoee Fenton, a four or five-year-old, on his shoulders. Jim gave me the biggest grin. I thought, “Whoa, hello!” It was Fall before I had found a part-time job in Astoria and moved back. We seemed to cross paths a lot. Winter brought Rainy Day films to the college. Once again it was a group hanging out afterward that included Debbie Twombly talking about music. This time it was the rock band Crazy 8s from Portland performing in Seaside. It became our first date.
The thread of music and radio continued as we both hosted various shows. His involvement as a Bedtime Stories reader lasted until we became parents. I brought back new acoustic, world fusion, and New Age music for a number of years with The Calm. We were both involved with the fun of Troll Radio. Jim continues to share stories and poems for Bedtime Stories. I enjoyed my short time joining in creating home grown radio and reading stories.
Thank you KMUN for the gift of connections and community in our lives. We’ve been happily married for 33 years.
Ann Robben Dott with Jim DottA note from Ann. My three criteria for where to move as I turned 30: a place for community, a food co-op, and public radio. Thirty-five years later I must say it has worked out very well.
N MAY CHUCK AND Sara Meyer generously donated their 1931 Dodge Sedan. “We wanted to do something different. KMUN’s 40th Birthday was a good reason to donate it now. And we thought it was time for someone else to enjoy this great car.”
KMUN works with CARS (Charitable Adult Rides & Services), a 501(c)3 nonprofit providing transportation solutions for seniors. Donate any vehicle and a large portion of the proceeds will benefit KMUN. It’s free, easy and tax deductible.
All types of vehicles (running or not) are considered – including cars, trucks, trailers, boats, RVs, motorcycles, campers, off-road vehicles, planes, heavy equipment, farm machinery, and most other motorized vehicles.
It’s easy. Just go to KMUN.org/donate-a-vehicle/ They will take it away, sell it, give KMUN most of the money and give you a tax receipt for the full sale amount.
A big thank you to Chuck and Sara for their support of KMUN and for their amazing birthday present.

Architect Hound takes a short walk up to Tillicum House located at the corner of Exchange Street and 14th street to volunteer at the front desk of KMUN Radio. This charming Victorian Era cottage was built in 1892 for Thaddeus Stevens Trullinger (1867-1944); son of pioneer businessman, inventor and public servant John C Trullinger (1828-1901). The elder Trullinger is best known in Astoria for building the first electric light plant in the city in 1885. Another of Trullinger’s sons, John H Trullinger (1870-1960) was a widely recognized artist who was trained in Europe and came back to pursue a career in the Pacific Northwest. Thaddeus Stevens Trullinger; likely named after ardent New England abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens (1792-1868), went into his father’s lumber business and lived in the Trullinger House until his death in 1944. After the Trullinger family moved out in 1946, the house had a number of owners including a local doctor who had his professional office in the building into the late 1980s.
KMUN Radio first went on the air as a community supported, non-commercial radio service in 1983, broadcasting out of the Gunderson Building on Commercial Street in downtown Astoria. Thanks to a large donation by a generous listener/member, KMUN was able to purchase the Trullinger House and began broadcasting from the former residence/doctor’s office in 1987. The floorplan and layout have been
modified over the years to better serve the radio station’s needs, but the Victorian Era decorative elements are still visible in the flooring, trim and window and door openings. The exterior, with a few modifications, is mostly intact and is an excellent, well-preserved example of the late Victorian Queen Anne architectural style. Key details of this style are an asymmetrical façade, multiple dormers and gables with decorative fishscale shingles and ‘gingerbread’ in the gable ends. Multiple open porches with decorative scrollwork, and bay windows with leaded/colored glass are also indicators of the late Victorian penchant for a whimsical variety of massing and texture. Perhaps the most recognizable aspect of the Queen Anne aesthetic is the multi-colored, playful expression of the exterior painted surface.
Coast Community Radio now refers to their office and broadcast studio as Tillicum House, in reference to the Chinook Indian word ‘tillicum’; meaning ‘people’ or ‘friend’. The Architect Hound sends out a bark of approval to KMUM Radio for preserving and adaptively re-purposing this historic residential structure.
The TILLICUM FOUNDATION MISSION is to serve the Lower Columbia Pacific Region through commercial-free community radio programs and services that enrich life by illuminating the role of the arts, promoting cultural and educational growth, and bringing focus to current issues of local and regional public interest while providing a forum for diverse and underserved groups.

STORIA SEEMS TO HAVE lots of new folks in town this year, and some have discovered the Ship Report, a 10-minute show which airs on KMUN at 8:49 am weekdays. It’s a show about “All Things Maritime,” which includes the schedule of arriving and departing ships on the river, along with maritime news and information. This month I thought I’d explain a bit about the show and its origins.
As of this year, I’ve been doing The Ship Report for 20 years. The show began in 2003, not long after I moved here to the Astoria area, and was hired as a news reporter for the station. My maritime journey began when I came in for my early morning shift and soon learned that the volunteer classical morning programmer on the air before me was in a line of work I had never heard of: Columbia River Bar Pilot.
Captain Thron Riggs and I chatted often during those mornings, and he started pointing out the many ships that would pass by the station. He noticed my sincere interest, and was instrumental in introducing me to the local commercial maritime industry, a path that has led me on a wonderful journey of discovery that continues today.
With Thron’s help, I soon began inserting a little bit of info into the newscast about those ships I saw on the river, and what was on board, and a ride on one of their pilot boats led me to develop friendships with the pilot boat crews, and other pilots, who invited me to go for rides with them at sea to learn about their work. I started to understand what a huge role these largely invisible and unappreciated mariners played in our lives as
residents here. And I knew I wanted to help tell that story, which has turned out to be a manyfaceted tale.
A colleague of Thron’s, Captain Robert Johnson, also a bar pilot, also became a mentor to me in my work. Early listeners to the show will remember the interviews we did on the air, explaining to listeners many aspects of the maritime industry. Over the years I’ve been fortunate to meet more people in the industry and learn so much. It’s an ongoing path that continues to delight and amaze me.
Amid my work as an employee for KMUN in different roles over the years, the ship report has always been a volunteer gig for me. I continued doing the show around my other responsibilities at the station, which for seven years included being general manager, and later news director. Now that I’m retired, I continue to provide the show to KMUN because I love doing it. It’s a labor of love, a continuing passion, and an evolving pursuit that I cherish. I’m so glad that other people like it too.
The Ship Report is one of many different “labors of love” that people can hear on KMUN. It shows what is possible in the realm of community radio: passionate local people pursuing their interests and sharing them with others. That’s what KMUN is all about, whether it be music, news, public affairs, etc. Without this station, I doubt that the Ship Report would have ever gotten a chance to be heard. I’m grateful every day for that opportunity.
If you’d like to learn more about the Ship Report, you’ll find my website at shipreport.net. See you on the radio!

I’m Alex, the guy who’s put together The Current for the last few years (along with my partner Leah who passed the torch to me.) This is my LAST issue with KMUN and the end of a nice long (ish) run of volunteering. I also worked the front desk with my kiddo, Opal, for a bit, and put together some shows (Myths and Melodies, Thursday Night Jazz.) I will deeply miss those great late nights of spinnin’ tunes and watching the ships go by. It was a dream I never knew existed till I found KMUN (again, cuz of my partner.) Farewell! Adieu! Sayonara!
