KMUN Receives Oregon Community Foundation Covid-19 Relief Grant
Our local non-commercial radio station KMUN was awarded a Covid-19 relief grant from Oregon Community Foundation (OCF), a statewide philanthropy assigning donor funds for transforming change in Oregon. The $11,000 grant was secured in late July and it was good timing for the KMUN’s fiscal budget. KMUN, which operates independently of public radio like OPB and rigidly formatted commercial stations, works on a very tight budget. Income to the station from businesses has decreased by 50%. Maintaining the quality of programming KMUN has been known for since 1983 is not possible without partners like OCF.
supporting us with Covid relief funding during this difficult time.” has been able to keep playlists and personalities holding strong by shifting programmers from in studio broadcasting to #homegrownradio with mobile recording studios that the station was able to purchase. The station was also able to bring back long time morning news host Kathleen Morgain to cover ever changing news information in Washington State. KMUN
Station Manager Graham Nystrom observed that “A lot of organizations are in need right now. We’re honored and grateful that OCF acknowledges the vitality of our services by
In other good news, KMUN wishes to thank the Clatsop County Cultural Coalition for its generous support. CCCC is funded by the Oregon Cultural Trust to award funds
to projects that support, maintain, preserve and protect cultural programs in the following categories: visual and performing arts, heritage, and humanities. In an awards presentation ceremony December 7, 2020, Tillicum Foundation/KMUN received a $2,000 grant earmarked for the project entitled “Virtual Access to Performances of Music, Theater and Dance during Covid-19.” With this program, we hope to provide artists and venues with a source of income during the pandemic, as well as providing the public with access to current, local, live performances on the internet from the safety of their homes on KMUNtv, a YouTube station. The hope is to secure funding for 12 performances in 2021. Thank you again to CCCC for a great start!

ello friends on the radio. Here we are! It’s 2021, and I wish you a Happy New Year. Let’s hope it’s a good one. Despite a challenging year for all of us, the stations of Coast Community Radio have experienced many blessings. These blessings include our amazing staff, Board of Directors and volunteers. It also includes our community of supporters. Despite a lot of economic insecurity and struggle, we managed to hit our fundraising goals and can carry on providing our services and keeping our staff employed.
can hear Rural Race Talks with LaNicia Duke) from 9-10am. It’s a local, live call-in show where we “pass the conch” around the community and speak to issues that affect us. It’s not easy coming up with topics that engage and get folks to open up, so I always welcome your suggestions. Send topics you’re interested in discussing as a community to graham@coastradio.org.
I’m grateful for our newest Board Members, Todd Lippold and Kathleen Sayce. I look forward to working with the Board on many of our recent efforts including setting up an endowment and working on a planned giving campaign so that lovers of local community radio can leave a legacy gift and keep our station strong into the future. We’ve already heard from several friends of the station that they are leaving us a gift in their will.
Patience and reason. Kindness and tolerance. Patience and empathy. Uniting and stabilizing. Hope and repair. Cooperation and compassion. Connection and healing. Family and adventure. Arts and entertainment. Wisdom and honesty. Song and dance. Hugging and kissing. Steady and uplifting.
Radio for Good is entering its third and final year, and the success of this effort is another thing to be grateful for. Donors and foundations have made it possible to update, upgrade, replace, repair, maintain and improve every aspect of our facilities. From HVAC on Megler Mountain to keep our new transmitter cool and happy, to the new translator site in Cannon Beach, to redundant STL systems to fall back on when (not if ) severe weather hits and causes issues. Thank you to the generous donors and foundations who have made this “Radio Re-Do” possible. I send a great big thank you to everyone who donated to Radio for Good. In thinking about the year ahead, aside from my work as Station Manager and Radio for Good Project Manager, I have quite a few episodes of my radio show to prepare. If you haven’t tuned in to The Conversation on KMUN, it airs every Wednesday except for first Wednesdays (when you WINTER 2021 THE CURRENT
In last week’s episode, I posed the question, “What are two words you hope will describe the year 2021?” Here are some of the responses:
I don’t know about you, but I see a pattern. I love that KMUN is a place where people with common goals and common causes can come together and engage in The Work. Arts, culture, news, information, entertainment, storytelling and so much more happens every day on our broadcast. Causes like local equity, justice, education, politics, wildlife, habitat, environment, ecology, music, theater, arts and culture. For me, the two words that I hope characterize 2021 are equity and solutions. One of the two biggest stories of the year is social justice and the need to address institutional racism in our country. I’m a believer that there are a great many smart people in the world capable of creating and executing positive change. I hope that next year we see more and more of these people rising to positions of power from where they can make positive changes. In 2021, I want to see equity and I want to see solutions. What about you? What are your two words for 2021?

L
ooking Forward, Giving Back was the tagline for KMUN’s weeklong #GivingTuesday celebration of local non-profits.
Traditionally, #GivingTuesday is a day of asking the public for monetary support via social media. KMUN decided to give more and receive less. We “gave” air-time and social media prominence to local nonprofits for the week leading up to GT. It felt great AND we made our goal. LOOKING FORWARD
I would say that KMUN is looking forward most of all to the return of programmers and all volunteers to Tillicum House. Through dedicated volunteers and equipment purchases we’ve made creating shows and working from home viable. But we miss the air room, we miss each other, we miss having visitors at the station. And there have been significant upgrades and improvements to the station and we want to show it off! Looking forward, my hope is that our community of listeners and our community of volunteers continue to deepen and expand their engagement with the station. GIVING BACK
Our community supports us - by listening, by sending in donations, by engaging with us on social media, by displaying their KMUN merch, and a myriad of other ways. We support our community by providing the best content we possibly can ... and by listening and responding to the feedback we get. Our mission statement is regularly reviewed by staff and board, making sure we are in sync with our organizational values and commitments. Giving back on #GivingTuesday (and our Promos for Nonprofits) has been really inspiring to me, as a staff member and as a citizen. I hope to expand on this example in my personal life, donating more time, money and food to those incredible organizations that serve our communities in so many important ways – including, but not limited to, Coast Community Radio.

FROM THE NEWS DEPARTMENT by Joanne Rideout News Director
I can’t tell you how glad I am to be rid of 2020, and on to 2021, for reasons I’m sure you understand. The past year, for all of us, has been one of incredible stress and adjusting on the fly to conditions we never anticipated. That said, we’ve learned to rely on ourselves perhaps more than we thought possible and learned that we are pretty resilient. That’s been so true of KMUN’s news department, which looks very different now than it did at the beginning of last year. Miraculously, we’ve managed to keep going and even improve upon what we offer you, our listeners.
An Adventure in History WINTER 2021 THE CURRENT
In the first quarter of 2020, I was working at the Tillicum House studios, going to work every day like much of the U.S. By mid-March, KMUN had switched to a whole new dynamic of how to handle broadcasting. Now, as we head into 2021, KMUN’s news department has changed in many ways and is more flexible than it was. In 2020 our news host, Dylan Hauser Schalk, moved on to a different phase of his life and left our news department. That made room for us to invite back a person whose voice many people at KMUN remember: Kathleen Morgain. Kathleen is now once again our local news host, two days a week on Mondays and Tuesdays, while I am on the air Wednesday through Friday. We both work from home remotely, thanks to some pretty amazing new equipment and the overall wizardry of Graham Nystrom, our station manager. We have forged partnerships with area publications for news sharing, and with the help of veteran reporter Jacob Lewin, who volunteers with us, we have increased our ability to provide you with breaking local news. So despite the often grim news we deliver every day, KMUN’s news department is holding together, breaking new ground, and as committed as ever to keeping you apprised of what’s happening around our region. Here’s to a 2021 that offers a path to a better reality, and some good news for a change.

D
id we make it? Is it 2021? I am writing this on a sunny day in December 2020 and have no idea what the new year looks like. I suspect a lot of things, good and not so good, are still the same in the world which asks this question; what are we looking and hoping for in 2021? The same can be said for KMUN, and looking forward can be rather difficult. As we wait for the pandemic to be resolved, we have been busy envisioning change. If this time has been less busy, at times it seemed to hold completely still; I have felt it. French philosopher Henri Bergson came up with the idea of why time seemed so strange in the
year of a pandemic. Henri was 59 in 1918 when he presented the idea that time has two faces. The “objective time” is what we see on clocks and calendars. And “lived time” is the subjective experience of time, how it is felt, lived and acted. Henri called this la duree. I’ve been spending my time working with the grant committee. Objectively, it can be tricky to meet deadlines and new this year compete for Covid Relief grants that are often on a first come, first served basis. My competitive side is filled with what I call “extreme grant funding”. Subjectively, it has felt great! We received money from the PPP loan part of the Cares Act, important grants from United Way of Clatsop County, Oregon Community Foundation, Clatsop County Cultural Coalition and Business Oregon. It is so gratifying to receive this money for KMUN. I am so proud of the KMUN staff agreeing to give back to the community for #giving Tuesday by airing Promos for Nonprofits. We hope that the listeners learned about some of the great nonprofits providing for our communities and are able to support them with the generosity they show KMUN. Promos for Nonprofits airs weekdays at 5:48pm on KMUN. TAKE THAT 2020!

KMUN Celebrates Volunteers at Annual Meeting!
I
t’s been a year for the record books. We’ve overused words like “unprecedented, pivoting, postponed, canceled, pandemic, restrictions, quarantined, Zoom, masks, wash, your, hands.” Live performances have been on hold since March, video calls and virtual venues have kept us connected to loved ones, lectures, art, music and social groups. In an industry with built-in physical distancing, KMUN radio has survived through the year of “pivoting” with aplomb. Annual Member Meeting went virtual, held on Zoom, November 7, Board, staff, volunteers and members joined the hour-long event. KMUN
When the mail-in ballots were counted, the Board welcomed new board members Todd Lippold (Seaside) and Kathleen Sayce (Nahcotta) along with re-elected members Victoria Stoppiello (Manzanita) and Sarah Lu Heath (Astoria). Annual awards were given for outstanding volunteers from the station. Volunteer awards are always a big part, and a big secret, at the annual meeting. This year, as often is the case, there were many great candidates. The Director’s Award was awarded to Lisa Smith (Long Beach). Lisa has worn a lot of hats at the station. Starting in 2002 as station manager, Lisa put together a news department through grants and a news model that we still use today. Classical programming was done by Lisa for years, she now brightens our days with a “mostly Folk” show on Tuesday mornings. As a Board Member, Lisa organized the Grant Writing Committee and advocated for applying for ALL the grants. “I am not sure how rounds of applause work on a Zoom meeting, said Board President Jack Harris, but please join me and the Board of Directors of the Tillicum Foundation in showing our appreciation to Lisa Smith for her nearly two decades of trans formative influence on our radio station.” KMUN
The LinMarie DiCianni “We Can Do It” Award for Extraordinary Volunteerism is presented to volunteers who achieve grand heights in their service to KMUN. This year there were two recipients: Jim Dott

(Astoria) and Merianne Myers (Warrenton). Jim has been working behind the scenes with the covey of bedtime story readers, devoting many hours to scheduling and production of seamless episodes of Bedtime Stories for the 8 – 8:30pm slot, Sundays through Thursdays. Thank you, Jim! Merianne Myers has been the conduit for the whole home grown radio model. She has taken on scheduling, delivering and receiving and disinfecting the mobile recording equipment that programmers are using to record their shows for airing, a fulltime job. Thank you, M2!
We’ve had a wild year but our incredible volunteers have also made it a wonderful year.
Since March, the KMUN studios have been closed for safety precautions. That means that the 100+ programmers are not able to produce their shows live. This created a two-fold problem with dead air, the biggest no-no for a radio station, and 100+ people unable to express themselves through music, information and connection. Remote recording became the “new normal” and now nearly 70 programmers pre-record their shows from home. This group, fondly referred to as Homegrown Programmers were named Programmers of the Year for learning new skills on the fly and keeping the station

some unexpected ways through their exemplary service, and we can’t wait to see what the next year brings!
Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Jacob Lewin (Astoria) for his contribution to the news department during the pandemic and the 2020 election year. Jacob is a seasoned professional radio reporter whose voice is familiar to our listeners. They’ve heard him before on NPR, on Marketplace, and on the Northwest News Network. He does wonderful work for us, great stories, about timely, interesting topics. He’s doing high quality professional work for us as a volunteer, and is a joy to work with. “That’s why I thought he should be our volunteer of the year,” says News Director Joanne Rideout. Looking forward to 2021, I’m excited about a whole heckuva lot right now. What 2020 brought us in obstacles has forced us to create new pathways to creating Good Radio, and our capabilities have expanded tenfold. Our industrious hosts and DJs have been learning more about the intricacies of audio science and tech while recording from home, which will only expand upon their already top notch work once we’re back at the station together again. Ideas have been percolating, and new shows are coming down the pike that will help us further accomplish our mission statement, from collaborations with local students and educators, to bringing you even more algorithm-free playlists.

WINTER 2021 THE CURRENT
This past year is one we will never forget.
T by Joanne Rideout
he pandemic has taught us all a lot about ourselves and caused us to look hard at everything in our lives.
In the shipping industry, changes in what people buy have driven some sectors of the global shipping economy to near ruin, while others have prospered. One thing I noticed in 2020, is that despite the incredible upheaval in our lives on land, here on the Columbia River our ship traffic has stayed pretty consistent with what we’ve come to expect in terms of the number of ships we see and what they carry. That’s because we are a region that specializes in raw materials for things people can’t do without, even in a pandemic.
The building blocks for other things are what we trade in here in the Pacific Northwest on outgoing ships: mostly agricultural products and minerals. The Columbia is a tremendous exporter of wheat on the world stage. And no matter what, people need to eat. The raw minerals like soda ash and potash go to make things like automotive glass and fertilizer: people still need to get around and to grow crops to survive. It’s been somewhat comforting for me during all this upheaval to see that the ships continue to come and go despite what we see happening around us here on land. Shippers and pilots have put protocols in place to protect themselves and their crews from illness, but work goes on. Despite this bit of seeming normalcy, the lives of mariners have been greatly impacted by the pandemic, many of them having to stay at sea and away from their families for even longer stretches that would normally happen during a typical year. Here’s hoping 2021 yields some mercy for all of us, with new opportunities to appreciate our lives without the constant threats we have come to expect from 2020.
the year comes to an end, I’ve given it some thought and decided that it’s time to let Troll Radio go. The possibility of live music gatherings in the next few months doesn’t look promising so I guess it’s time to say so long!
Troll Radio Revue comes to an end With mixed feelings (what isn’t these days?!) we are letting Troll Radio Revue fade into the pandemic. Our last live show was last February, and since then, with the help of Jim Dott, we’ve been able to rebroadcast some recorded programs from past years. As
We broadcast live, once a month, for nearly 22 years, a good run. It was fun to work with the progression from the River Theater to the PAC to Fort George, with some special outdoor shows in the summer. So much talent has been showcased on the Troll Stages, so much dancing, laughing and general merriment. I’ll miss the music, smiling faces, happy kids and parents, and the irrational behavior of Mr. Troll. I don’t have the space here to thank everyone who made Troll Radio happen for so long, so I’ll just say a big thank you to all who supported us in those 22 years! – DEBBIE TWOMBLY

Dear KMUN, “Thank you for the Ship Report and all of the places we learn about and some good tunes you play. We love you. Here is a donation to make more radio for people.”
from Facebook, Nov 2020
A recent mailer indicated some changes were made to the Cannon Beach signal and I have to say this year the reception has been static-y and fuzzy more than Ever. And the rain makes it worse. Reception has always been fickle in Cannon Beach but something has changed over the last several months and now that I see you’ve made some changes I wonder if the awful reception is related to that. josh
Cannon Beach — Note from the station manager: Thanks for checking in Joshua. The new tower and transmitter site is still in the final stages of completion, and we hope to have the new Cannon Beach transmitter operational sometime around the first of the year (January 2021). The first steps taken on this project started waaaaaay back in 1998(!), and after all this time, the finish line is in sight. The new transmitter will be operating at 25x higher power (from 10 watts up to 250 watts), and it will be situated at a higher elevation, so your reception should improve significantly. The frequency has to change slightly, so when we power it on, it will be at 89.3 instead of 89.5. Thanks for your patience as we finish with the terrifyingly long process of fundraising, permits, applications and construction. The tower is getting delivered to the site TODAY (Dec 10). We are very excited, and hope that you can be patient just a little while longer. Keep in touch, Graham
So glad to hear Pam Trenary doing her show and we are loving what she is putting on the air. Nina Simone doing “Sinner man” live was amazing!!! Thanks so much Pam for all the music you have put on the air forever. ned and lulu

What a fabulous way to spend a quiet evening listening to bedtime stories. Thank You to the reader, Monica Rush! Hearing a story read over the air slows the pace of life, and taps into our illustrations of imaginations! Best Regards, wendy d.

I had missed Pete Serefin’s program last week, early December, and wanted to hear it, just to see what “surprise” he would offer in the program. His humorous approach to classical music programming often brings a smile to my face. My desired episode was right there, clear and complete. jane hill

I did try the new archives to check out World of Bach. It worked well on my iPad. Good interface. Totally intuitive.
Local people love it because they can listen when they CAN listen. It is also great for listeners in SD and OH due to time differences rendering actual PST air times awkward.

COAST COMMUNITY RADIO YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE IN THE COLUMBIA PACIFIC
Here at The Salmonberry our support of KMUN was one of our first priorities in giving back to a community that has given us so much support. Many mornings at the Saloon are started with a collective shout of “Ship Report! Ship Report!” Or “Albert’s on!” and “Jerry’s on!” - Tools are laid down to listen to Joanne Rideout, or Jessica & Teresa speak about the soil we collectively till and the bounty we harvest from it. And as a lifetime music booker/promoter, Chantelle is always thrilled to hear little-known underground gems played by K-Now, Jack, The Mellow & so many other great Djs and shows. Especially in these collectively trying times, KMUN and those familiar voices coming across the airwaves has given us solace. We will continue to support and enjoy KMUN into the future, especially until we can host you and thank you in person again.
