COLOR KMUN station manager to step down FTER NEARLY FIVE YEARS at the

helm, Graham Nystrom is stepping down as station manager for KMUN.

Susan Peterson, development director for KMUN, will take his place.

“I came into the position planning on giving it five years,” he said. “I’m at four and half now and I’ve accomplished the bulk of my goals — and then some.”

SPRING 2022 THE CURRENT

Nystrom, a musician and live sound and recording engineer, previously worked as technical director for Live Wire Radio and Oregon Public Broadcasting. He was hired as KMUN’s operations manager in 2015 and took over as station manager in 2017. Under his leadership, KMUN regained significant financial and operational stability. Nystrom also planned and helped fundraise for major technical improvements at the station. All of this work came at a cost, though. Nystrom says he has increasingly felt the toll of job-related stress and now wants to step back and evaluate what comes next.

The Board of Directors for the Tillicum Foundation, the governing body of KMUN, said they accepted Nystrom’s resignation with reluctance, but they respect his decision to move on. “KMUN has never been in better shape or on a more solid financial foundation than it is now,” said Larry Scott, board vice president, “and this is largely a reflection of Graham’s leadership and commitment over the past few years.” Peterson has agreed to step into the role of station manager for at least the next two years to ease the transition. Peterson has worked for KMUN since 2013. She says she is excited about the opportunity to lead the station and is honored to follow in Nystrom’s footsteps, and those of former station manager Joanne Rideout.

“He and Joanne set a high standard for steering the good ship KMUN,” Peterson said, “and I will be “I came into the position planning on giving it five looking to both of them for guidance.” years,” he said. “I’m at four and half now and I’ve As station manager, she plans to focus on the accomplished the bulk of my goals — and then station’s further development. She says she is some.” stepping in at a time when the station is, overall, in great shape. “It’s also really important to me to be able to perform my job to the best of my abilities and to “So it is the perfect time,” she said, “to change bring my best self to the role,” he added. “That is our focus into development, major gifts, bequests, something I have seen waning in the recent past. So that was a key indicator that it was time for me stocks, crypto, all kinds of non-cash donations, to move on and for the station to evolve and grow and really start connecting with our members in a way that we just haven’t had the capacity to do in and be under the leadership of someone new.” the past.” Nystrom will continue as station manager through May to make the transition as smooth as possible. Katie Frankowicz, KMUN News Director He hopes to remain involved with KMUN in the future and support station operations in an engineering role.

In the upcoming months, the Board and staff will continue to work with each other on strategic planning. This work will help both the Board and staff shape long-term goals that will benefit the station over the next few years. While KMUN has never been in better shape that it is now, there is always room for improvement. Moreover, as we have learned from the pandemic, there will be unforeseen challenges as we go forward. Some pertinent goals will include broadening KMUN’s reach; improving and expanding KMUN’s programming; bringing the station to the community; cultivating outreach and education opportunities; bolstering KMUN’s emergency response systems and processes; continuing to have transparent and sustainable revenue; fostering funding development with the Board; and creating leadership and Board development. These goals are just some examples of the different ways that the Board and staff will continue to support KMUN and the community.

COLOR BW Call it “impermanence” ELL, HERE WE ARE, with

spring coming around again, in a world that seems profoundly changed even from the spring we welcomed just last year. Change just seems to be the thing, whether we like it or not. by Joanne Rideout

“In life, most of us tend to hold on to routine for a sense of security.”

SPRING 2022 THE CURRENT

In these Ship Report articles I always try to draw from experiences or truths that exist in the maritime world to help us navigate this one. It seems we need all the help we can get right, now charting our own personal course through the world as it is. It’s pretty obvious that many of the things we thought were constants in life are changing. Worldwide and in our own lives. So this month, let’s talk about the possibility of letting go of certainty. As a step toward freedom from fear. As a step into something more flexible and perhaps more enduring.

see it now. Change is happening despite our routines. What I’ve seen on ships is that people do this too, holding to routine. It’s vital, so I’m not knocking the idea of routines. In fact, routine is the basis of life on board a ship - everyone doing their proper jobs at the proper time, in the proper place in the order of things. Together, it keeps the ship running. And the ship, in that setting, is their world. But everyone on a ship at sea has a firm underlying awareness of the uncertainty of life and how vulnerable they all are to it. Every storm, every mechanical issue, every step on a heaving metal deck in a hard hat and steel toed shoes, every task with heavy machinery all around - it’s an opportunity to remember that life can turn on a dime and we don’t necessarily know what’s next.

Buddhism calls it “impermanence.” The assurance that whatever is happening now, something different will be happening later. You can count on it, even if you don’t know what it is. In some circumstances, change may be the only thing you can be sure of.

What if we didn’t rely so much on routine to help us feel better? We still need and perhaps cherish our routines - sure, that cup of coffee or tea in the morning is important and I wouldn’t ask you to part with it. The routine roles we perform in our jobs are part of what makes everything work.

In life, most of us tend to hold on to routine for a sense of security. We keep doing the same things hoping for the same result. For awhile, this works. But not always, and not reliably. If we never saw it before, we can certainly

But what if in addition to that, to those routine comforts and roles, we found a way to accept what mariners do - that life is full of uncertainty, and that it’s best to keep your eyes and heart open so you don’t miss the

good things, in the midst of worry about the potential for bad. This is why sailors, despite their worries, and separation from family, still stand on deck and look at the stars or watch the sunset. Because despite the uncertainties of life, many good things are always happening too. They too are part of the continually changing world in which we live. A lot of that change is beautiful and worth experiencing. If we can count on anything in the world, it’s perhaps that. Let’s notice and savor those beautiful things and moments. Because change is right around the corner.

COLOR BW FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CORNER by Janet Fryberger Membership Director

Plutarch’s ship N PLUTARCH’S ANCIENT GREEK

allegory, Theseus (founder-king of Athens) sailed triumphantly back to the great city after killing the Minotaur on Crete. His ship stayed in Athens’ harbor for a thousand years, as a living trophy. It was sailed to Crete annually to reenact the victorious voyage. As time began to corrode the vessel, its components were replaced one by one — new planks, new oars, new sails — until no original part remained. Was it then, Plutarch asks, the same ship?

“Habits, beliefs, and ideas evolve beyond recognition throughout a lifetime.” 10

There is no static, solid self. Habits, beliefs, and ideas evolve beyond recognition throughout a lifetime. Almost all of our cells are replaced. Yet we remain, to ourselves, Who. We. Are.

Those of us who work or volunteer at KMUN have been compelled to adapt and recalibrate daily - most obviously during this pandemic but, honestly, it’s always been the situation here. Imagine facing the non-negotiable requirement to consistently and creatively fill every hour of every day with news, entertainment and information. Every day our “product” is re-created, adjusted, rebuilt and very few original elements remain. So, I just want to thank Plutarch for that perspective on identity, our members for their constancy, love and support, and the 100+ KMUN/KCPB volunteers for their flexibility and heart.

Rigidity is the enemy of creativity, empathy and resilience. Paradoxically, our best hope for stability is to embrace the reality of constant change. We who live in the Columbia-Pacific region are well placed to take our wisdom from the surrounding ocean and rivers – steadily shifting.

COLOR FROM THE NEWS DEPARTMENT by Katie Frankowicz

The News Ecosystem HAT IS THE MOST cliche thing

a journalist could do? Probably say something dramatic about how their commitment is to the Truth. Or the Facts.

“The news ecosystem is really healthy here...”

12

And it’s not that it’s not true, it’s just a lot for someone to say it with the glint of nobility in their eye and all, especially when they’re a small town journalist on the Oregon Coast and they’ve written a handful of stories about marauding bears and how deer use the crosswalks in Astoria. Not much Congressional malfeasance to uncover there. But, that’s why I am here. Not here in the studio, or here in front of my computer. Technically — let me commit myself to the Truth — I am here in front of one, two, three laptops and they are all, unfortunately, very important. I mean, that’s why I’m here still doing the work of gathering the news: I am committed to the elusive pursuit of truth, specifically local truth. Local news, local issues. For years, Joanne Rideout and Kathleen Morgain brought local and regional news to KMUN’s airwaves. Theirs were trusted and reliable voices and they left some big shoes to fill. I feel so lucky to get to shuffle around in those shoes now. And I feel lucky not just that I get to report news at KMUN, but that I get to report news in a region that has a healthy local news presence. Before I came to KMUN in January, you may have known me as a reporter for The Astorian.

SPRING 2022 THE CURRENT

I loved working in that newsroom of dedicated, talented journalists and editors, people who took all the hate mail and verbal abuse from the community in stride because they knew they were providing an important service to that same community. I think sometimes people think we report things because we take sick pleasure in writing about illegal stuff people do or because we revel in the issues facing our communities and don’t believe in personal privacy. I don’t know if they realize how much we think of it as service and of ourselves as public servants, telling you what your elected officials are saying even if you don’t like what they’re saying, putting a human face on people who aren’t always allowed to feel human, unpacking complicated, messy issues so you have all the information to form an educated opinion. So many towns and cities don’t have what we have in this area of the North Oregon Coast and Southwest Washington. We have a radio station and multiple newspapers that actually report what’s going on locally. Reporters here actually attend those hours-long city council and planning commission meetings. They ask people awkward questions like, “So what happened to that money?” It’s amazing and it’s something that has almost disappeared in other areas. The news ecosystem is really healthy here and I’m

COLOR A visual barrier around the satellite dish ADLY, AN ICE STORM in 2021 damaged the alders on the west side of the Tillicum House property and had to be removed. In accordance with the agreement KMUN has with the City of Astoria, we need to provide a visual barrier for the large satellite dish on that part of the property, along the driveway from 14th Street.

Twelve arborvitae trees (emerald green thuja) were lovingly planted by Steven, Jennifer, Nick, Rick, Bruce, Jack, Graham, and Nyklus on a sunny Saturday morning in early April. The job was completed in just one hour thanks to the many strong backs and a rented auger. Station manager and landscape foreman of the day Graham Nystrom states “We couldn’t have done it without the community’s help. And I think everyone enjoyed their eco-exercise.” Wish the trees a happy growing season next time you drive by the station!

YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE IN THE COLUMBIA-PACIFIC REGION

The Tillicum Foundation stands firmly against racism in all its forms. KMUN is your local source for high quality and thoughtfully curated programming, from our news and public affairs to music and entertainment. It is our duty to provide this in a way that is conscious of implicit bias, systemic racism, and societal inequities. In our programming, we will: • Evaluate new programming and decisions based on our mission statement in order to amplify oppressed and underrepresented voices in our community and beyond. • Monitor our current programming offerings and practices, looking at where we can make improvements to better represent a variety of identities and viewpoints. • Seek out programming that will fill in our deficiencies. • Create equitable access to our programs and services.

In our administration, we will: • Create a staff, Board and volunteer base that reflect our community. • Provide our staff, Board and volunteers with opportunities for inclusive conversation and training on diversity, equity, inclusion and justice and how these issues pertain to our personal lives as well as our work at the station.

We hope that you will join us in this effort to create a more just future.
