PRESS RELEASE
Coast Community Radio Receives a Grant from Oregon Community Foundation for immediate release 11/16/2018
A
STORIA, OR – Coast Community Radio (CCR), the non-profit radio station in the Columbia-Pacific region, has received a $10,000 grant from Oregon Community Foundation. Station Manager Graham Nystrom wrote the grant for money to move and upgrade a radio translator in Cannon Beach OR. Nystrom will administer the funds by purchasing translator equipment including a tower and generator. This will improve CCR's ability to fulfill our mission and build on Cannon Beach's strength in arts advocacy and engagement. The new site will expand signal strength the length of Cannon Beach and will extend to Arch Cape and into parts of Manzanita. In addition, the new equipment will give HAM operators the needed capacity to create a communications network and practice for disasters The local police and county emergency management people have fully backed the ability to retreat to this high ground and have access to a reliable FM broadcast facility during power outage emergency situations. Many citizens, even without power, would be able to receive information on battery operated, common FM receivers directly from emergency staff. The next few months will be for planning and preparation of the site
for construction including tree-cutting, excavation and concrete foundation, purchase, delivery, modification and installation of 10'x8' equipment structure. And installation of electrical, generator, switch, internet, phone and any other required utility services. Nystrom has prioritized this project with a completion date set for June 2019.

he latest incarnation of The edward james radio hour seeks to double my pleasure and hopefully the listener’s pleasure as well. Stage and Screen will draw from both Broadway and Cinema. Because I do as many as 52 shows a year, I felt that Broadway music alone would be somewhat confining. At best, only a handful of Original Cast Recordings are produced each year. And not all of those pass quality control to present to North Coast ears. Every Broadway season -- owing to the efforts of legions of highly-skilled, keenly motivated of performers, theater artists, writers and patrons -- seems to produce one or two musicals that soar above the rest. Recent inspired works include In The Heights, Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Natasha, Pierre and The Comet of 1812, Come From Away and The Band’s Visit. What distinguishes them is their musicality, inventiveness, and cultural significance. These delight my Spirit and I love to share them. Every now and then we’ll spend an hour listening to the work of influential composers like Cole Porter, Gershwin, Lloyd Webber, Sondheim, Kander and Ebb, Weill and Schwartz. Other times, we’ll listen to golden oldies from Broadway of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Or maybe we’ll go low-brow and play tunes from ‘jukebox’ musicals which build shows around the work of popular artists like ABBA, Carole King, Cher, Donna Summer and Tina Turner. I’ll put together playlists from both the Big and Little Screen. Tunes from Madmen and The Sopranos provided a diverting pastime on recent Wednesday afternoons. Future programming will include music from the films of Scorsese, Tarantino, Luhrman as well as the great film composers like John Williams, Hanz Zimmer, Elmer Bernstein, Bernard Haupmann. And I’ll sprinkle in some mainstream music from the wide world of movies just ‘cuz. Join me Wednesdays at 3 p.m. for Stage and Screen and treat your ears.

I
can't remember life without music. Maybe it never happened. There was always music playing in our home, whether it was my mother's Dean Martin and Ray Charles records or my sister's raucous rock and roll. My oldest memories involve listening to my sister's 45 RPM records on my little suitcase record player with the brutal steel needle that dug a deeper groove every time I played my favorite song. I still have those records today. They sound scratchy and noisy, in no way suitable for our unforgiving modern-day sound systems. But that's okay; the music survives, and it's still here for me to listen to and share with my friends. It was an honor for me to be chosen to fill the shoes of Jim Hill, the extraordinary host of Classic Rock & Roll for so many years. Every Sunday, when I climb into the chair at the mixing board, I do my best to live up to the expectations of the audience he knew so well. It’s a quirky group of listeners, as offbeat as so many of us that have chosen to live in this soggy paradise where the river meets the sea. On any given Sunday afternoon you’re likely to hear Frank Sinatra or Patti Page mixed in with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Because that’s what you want. Classic Rock & Roll is a request show, and that means I’m always scrambling to find that next song you have to hear. Songs are memories, and when the memory hits you, that’s when you need to hear that special song. Now, not later. Keeping up with that particular task can be challenging, but thanks to Debby, my strong right hand, we are usually able to keep up with the many requests we get each week. I am a huge rock & roll fan, and I do my best to keep the show as upbeat and fun as those early days on AM radio. I’m hoping that when you tune in at 1:00 pm on Sunday afternoon, you immediately notice the change in the radio vibe. We’re going back in a jukebox time machine to our more carefree days. And I never forget that Jim Hill is looking over my shoulder, listening and smiling.

t's fall, going on winter, on the coast, and I'm seeing reminders of how formidable our Pacific Northwest environment can be, not just in the increasingly difficult weather, but in how that weather affects people who work in our marine environment. Some of those reminders become causes for mourning.
Recently on the Ship Report, I talked with listeners about a tragic occurrence in the waters off Alaska, where a fishermen went overboard in Kotzebue Sound in the northwest part of the state. Conditions there were far from ideal, but typical: 5 foot seas, 20 knot winds, and water temperature around 43 degrees F. A crew member on a fishing boat went overboard. He was not wearing a life jacket.

The Coast Guard press release described it this way, in horrifying practical detail, as press releases often do, “He was last seen sinking below the water's surface by crew aboard his fishing vessel Juda Lee.” This incident reminds us in stark terms about what it takes to catch the fish we rejoice in eating here on the coast. The bulk of our locally caught fish is harvested by small crews on fishing boats who go out in horrific weather. Sometimes people die. This fisherman likely never had a chance once he fell over the rail. While some might make the case that he should have been wearing a life jacket, fishermen often don't, because of the risk that it might get caught on dangerous deck gear while they are working, and injure or kill them in that way. The job is fraught with potential catastrophic injury. But without flotation, it's unlikely that a person could have stayed above water for more than a few minutes in water that cold. In rough conditions like those happening that day, it would be even harder to save a person, even one who did have on a PFD (personal flotation device). In the aftermath of this tragedy, the result of a moment of awful luck, his crewmates are left with horrifying memories that will likely never leave them. A lost companion, snatched by an unforgiving sea. So the next time you sit down to a fish dinner, give thanks to the fishermen (and women) who risked their lives to bring it to you. They go where the fish are, so they can catch them. They accept the risk as part of the job. It's not a risk most of us are prepared to take.

CROW'S NEST
View From the Crow’s Nest
stop carrying their weight. This is a very good description of what we have experienced these last few weeks. I will let Brian go into more detail about what these different pieces of equipment do and why they are important to us.
what we do have is a dedicated staff, a fantastic Board of Directors, an amazing pool of over 130 volunteers, and you, the good folks who put us on the air in 1983 and have done what it takes to keep us on the air for 35 years.
what should we do?
To be transparent, this is going to require an investment by our community of listeners and members. First, we need to build an initial base of support (aka “matching funds”) from the community. Then we’ll apply to Charitable Foundations for grants. We have an excellent grant writing committee ready to help with that phase.
After several weeks of scrambling to keep us on the air, and I was finally able to come up for air myself, it by Graham Nystrom became clear that we are approaching Station Manager the end of our broadcast equipment’s life span. The situation is like when you scratch a piece of peeling paint, n the style of desi arnaz, the whole house falls down. Or if I can picture listeners and KMUN you touch one wire, three completely unrelated pieces of equipment will lovers from all around thinking, suddenly fail. (Yes, I exaggerate, but “Graham… you have some not much.) when will we do it? We start now! Raising the funds and applying for grants could take one to three years. This is a good moment to add that (with impeccable timing) the Board of Directors spent much of last year focused on promoting ways that major donors can support the station. We are expanding awareness around planned giving opportunities like gifts in wills and qualified charitable donations (QCD’s). With your generosity, we can achieve our goal of renewing KMUN’s broadcast capabilities for another 20 years. Throughout the course of this effort, we will continue building our contingency savings account and building an endowment fund which will provide an consistent, supplemental revenue source for the station. tell me somethin’ good! I am standing on the shoulders of the giants who built this station. I am honored to take part in its stewardship, and with your support, I am up to the task. t’s raining volunteers (amen)!” ...with your help, that is! If you’ll pardon the shameless lyric appropriation, I want to call to action our listeners and supporters out there in the Great Gray Wet. Coast Community Radio is by and large a volunteerdriven vehicle, and with the busy season on the way out the rain and slower pace are coming in...Perhaps there’s a little more free time in your weekly or monthly schedule. Our needs are many and our staff are few. Come by the Tillicum House and lend a hand! we rely on volunteer help to:
• Digitize the library (A seemingly Sisyphean task, but noble and necessary use of your time!) • Assist with mailings (How else to get The Current out to so many supporters on time?)
• Post Community Calendar events (The goings-on in our communities are great and many!)
• Assist staff with daily tasks (Whatever the task, you’re greasing the proverbial wheels.)
New faces and energy are a wonderful thing. If you’ve volunteered in the past, we’d love to see you and hear from you again! If you’d like to become a volunteer for Coast Community Radio, please email volunteer@coastradio.org with your questions, ideas or availability. You can always come by the Tillicum House as well at 1425 Exchange Street in Astoria.

The Missing Link
G
raham filled you in on some details of our hunt for red october and set me up nicely for my portion of this issue. If you skipped ahead, please go back and read Graham’s ‘splainin!
They say the best way to fully comprehend something is to get hands on training. If they are right, then I have learned A LOT this last October. With the guidance of our fearless leader, Graham Nystrom, I have now put my hands on almost every piece of gear in the KMUN signal chain. The truth of the matter is, we’re ready for an upgrade. We’ve been ready. As the former Operations Manager, Graham put his heart, soul, duct tape and personally donated gear into this station to get it to a technically respectable working environment. We knew that we needed the upgrade before he was hired, but as he tirelessly seeks out affordable gear to make our signal more robust and higher quality, there was an allusion that our situation could last like this forever. Gear with cool names like, “The Compellor” and “The Exciter” are added to the mix and tweaked to our hearts’ content. Those pieces of gear mean nothing if we are not on the air. The Tillcum House in downtown Astoria is where the KMUN studio magic happens, but how does that magic get to your cars and home radios? It is easy to say “magic,” but I’m sure we all know there is a bit more to it than that. While downtown Astoria is a great place for a studio, it is not the best place for a radio tower. The KMUN/KCPB tower is located just across the river in Washington on what has been coined “Megler Mountain,” near Dismal Nitch. Sitting at about 1,300 feet, this is the perfect location for a radio tower to reach our largest possible listening area. Getting from studio to tower is a very important part of the process and there is a lot that goes into it, so I have found out. Outside of the mixing console, microphones, turntables, computers, CD players, d/a converters, satellites, and dynamics processing the real link is the STL (studio/transmitter link). The STL is like a smaller, more focused
WINTER 2018 THE CURRENT
radio transmitter that sends a very specific radio frequency up to Megler. The STL requires line-of-sight from the tower at the studio up to the tower at the mountain, which is one reason you might see us doing some routine tree trimming around the house. This signal is received at the tower in real-time and put through an “exciter.” The exciter boosts the signal much like a preamp on a mixing console into something that can be transmitted at 5,000 watts and magically appear in the air for miles all around at the frequency of 91.9 fm. Another link from the station to the mountain is our internet connection. A solid internet signal allows us to monitor the gear remotely and send information back and forth. In diagnosing the issues with the KMUN signal, we found both the STL and the “Rocket Dish” that sends and receives our internet signal to the mountain to have issues. A big thanks to Bob Pensworth at Crescom Wifi for allowing us to use their internet in the meantime. If you are a regular KMUN listener, then you likely have tuned in to either no signal or a spotty signal in the last month. For that, I would like to issue my most sincere apology. While the main issue right now is with our STL; running a 24 hour broadcast means that our equipment never gets to rest. Even the most robust gear cannot be expected to work for 15 years straight without a break. Outside of getting the right gear into the right places, we are working to develop a system of redundancies and back up gear so that KMUN will not have to experience outages or glitches in the future. Especially as we near winter, we are confident that with the right updates, we can be here for you during any emergency situation. I answered the phone to many a concerned caller during October and every one was that; concerned. Thank you for being there for us during some hard times—We’ll be here for you on the air.

WINTER 2018 THE CURRENT
Happy New Year, I hope it’s your very best!
A
re you thinking about 2018 as it comes to a close and all the incredible events and joys another year has given us? This kind of reminiscing started for me in September, as the Coast Community Radio fiscal year comes to a close (mostly because I am all about the money!) It’s been a joy and my pleasure to meet so many of you at the regional Farmer’s Markets this year. Learning about your businesses is as rewarding as sharing information about this volunteer powered, listener supported radio station. Staff has certainly had a busy year with Graham at the helm, Brian taking care of the “blinky lights” Elizabeth crafting the KMUN sound, Joanne making local news available to all, Janet appreciating everyone and me trying to keep up with all of that activity! I am excited about the ground work we have been pursuing this year, thanks to Graham. As we set good business practices in place, this non-profit will be even more steady as an important

As Astoria embraces its current status as a tourist mecca, residents and visitors have a renewed sense of how much there is to love about our town. Developers, also, are looking to build here, and residents are realizing that city codes may be outdated in terms of preserving views and other concerns that are more in line with present day life in our river town. Look for more news coverage on this developing story in the coming months, as a new mayor and city council tackle

business and growing concern in the Lower Columbia Pacific region. Look at us already, KMUN employs 5 full time people who all have health care! We are the non-profit that serves every aspect of the region from citizens, businesses, schools, other non-profits and government. That is amazing! As KMUN grows in capacity, we are better able to cultivate community by creating avenues for everyone to add their voice to this community radio station. Won’t it be exciting to hear a podcast from a local person pertaining to a topic you are interested in? With listeners and members in mind, we are flying to new heights of communication, education and entertainment. Thank you for joining us on the wing! 9Pardon the references to birds, I couldn’t help myself ) Happy New Year, I hope it’s your very best!
FROM THE NEWS DEPARTMENT
In the News here is lots to report on in our news realm here on the coast. One issue I've been following for the station is the City of Astoria's effort to address waterfront development issues and how that will affect residents' quality of life.
FROM THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM
by Joanne Rideout News Director changing the rules to protect and preserve what we love most about Astoria. In the run up to this November's election, Coast Community Radio launched an ambitious news and public affairs project: We interviewed candidates in local and state races, and stakeholders who weighed in on Clatsop County ballot measures. These shows have aired under the umbrella of our public affairs show Perspectives, which in the past has been the domain of programmer and journalist Joan Herman. Joan threw her hat in the ring for Astoria City Council and therefore could not do the show during her campaign. So we had to find other means to complete a full slate of interviews. Many hands make light work in a situation like this, and as a result, many thanks go out to programmers
Lisa Smith and Steve Forrester, who stepped in to assist with candidate and ballot measure interviews. Our series concluded at the end of October. Inside our small news department, our Friday morning news host Dylan Hauser Shalk continues to hone his skills in a demanding position. We're glad he's on board. I'm grateful to have additional reporting hours available for field work, and other duties. More next time. There's always more to tell.

"Only connect." E.M. Forster, Howards End
L
ooking back on 2018, I’m struck by the disparity between big-picture and local-picture perspectives. There have been so many news stories about how divided this country (and many others) has become; how those volatile divisions are being stoked and manipulated. However, when I look around me, I see local citizens frequently being open-minded and accepting, loving, inclusive and supportive. I see people showing up for each other, the arts, political discussions, local history institutions and celebrations, their neighbors, and visitors. I see them supporting local nonprofits through connection, memberships/donations and volunteering. I believe the desire to connect is the underlying impulse coming from both sides of any non-profit and the community it serves. A Coast Community Radio member from Long Beach called a few months ago,

wanting to renew. She and her husband are elderly and she told me that he has advanced Alzheimer’s. A former Ship Captain, her husband listens to The Ship Report every morning. She said it's one of the few times where there is a look of true recognition and a sparkle in his eyes and he often exclaims "She got that right!" It's important to her to support the station through membership. It was important to me to hear her story.
