Coast Community Radio Celebrates Community, It's Our Middle Name!!
O
ver 120 members of coast community radio celebrated KMUN and each other during the Annual Meeting and Breakfast held November 2, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Fellowship Hall in Astoria. Everyone was well fed, volunteers received yearly awards and Board members were elected. KMUN Annual awards were given for outstanding volunteers from the station. Donna Quinn (Astoria) was awarded The Director’s Award. Donna hosts “Talk of Our Towns” weekly at 9:30am Wednesdays. For 15 years, Donna has created a wonderful interview style program with the movers and shakers of the region. After receiving the award and taking a deep breath, Donna gushed “I am humbled and honored by this award! How incredibly fortunate we are that Coast Community Radio exists in this singular place. Kudos to all who envisioned and breathed life into this station years ago, and all who continue to make it the powerful force for good it is today. It is a great privilege for me to be part of this one-of-a-kind radio station. Thank you! Our volunteers, programmers and members connect, reflect and shape the community we call home here in the Columbia Pacific region. I am ever so grateful for this amazing award and for Coast Community Radio/KMUN being a touchstone in my life. Onward with Good Vibrations… and some nourishing deep breaths! Kiitos! Kiitos! Kiitos!”
Reid Johnson (Seaside) was honored as Volunteer of the Year. As a front desk volunteer, Reid answers phones, greets visitors and is specially trained to create KMUN Community Calendar air spots and website listings. Ellen Frye (Astoria) was presented Programmer of the Year for her well loved show “World of Bach” every Sunday morning from 7 to 9am. And Kegan Rascoe (Astoria) was awarded Rookie of the Year for his program “Life Down Stream” second Wednesday of the month at 9:30am on KMUN 91.9 Astoria/89.5 Tillamook. Re-elected to the Board were Jack Harris (Astoria), who was also re-elected as Board President. “I was thrilled not just by the great turn-out, but also the enthusiasm and diversity of our membership. I know it inspires me and the rest of the Board when we see how our Community Radio station can bring all of these folks together,” states Harris. Also re-elected were Tom Duncan (Astoria), Jennifer Crockett (Astoria), John Stevenson (Clatskanie) and David Campiche (Ilwaco). Last year this Board focused on the developing of a grant-writing team, organizing
an endowment through planned giving and putting on events that raise money and awareness for the Station. With these goals reached and underway, Harris says, “Looking forward, the Board will focus on creating more awareness of Coast Community Radio as to grow our membership and get our News and Programming departments more resources to produce premium local content that will in turn create even more awareness. Supporting Graham and finding creative revenue sources are our primary responsibilities.” Coast Community Radio is committed to using radio as an active resource for community development and public access. We seek to involve and establish cooperative efforts among community groups including seniors, women, young people, and ethnic and cultural minorities by providing independent, non-commercial, community radio programs and services for the greater Lower Columbia Pacific Region.

appy new year! In the words
of John Lennon, “Let’s hope it’s a good one.”
annual member meeting and breakfast
On November 2nd, well over a hundred Coast Community Radio members were in attendance for our Annual Member Meeting and Breakfast. Attendees enjoyed a fine spread prepared by head chef and Tillicum Foundation Board Member, David Campiche. During the annual meeting, the election results came in, and...here comes the new Board, same as the old Board! I couldn’t be happier to spend another year working for our fantastic Board of Directors. They each bring a different slice of expertise to the table, and they all work diligently for the good of the station. If you ever see a Board Member in the wild, tell them thanks. It takes a very generous person to donate their time, energy and resources to make this station go. I also want to congratulate this year’s award winners: Donna Quinn (Director’s Award), Ellen Frye (Programmer of the Year), Kegan Rascoe (Rookie of the Year) and Reid Johnson (Volunteer of the Year). the conversation
Have you been tuning in on Friday mornings at 9:30 for “The Conversation?” It’s KMUN’s first live
WINTER 2020 THE CURRENT
call-in show where the community gets to weigh in on a variety of topics. We’ve discussed topics ranging from education, the electoral college, NW winters, waterfront development, travel, and more. I’ honored to be one of the show’s hosts, and it’s a ton of fun hearing from all the different voices that call in each week. Some of your comments have been truly profound. “The Conversation” show is one way that KMUN is “Your community voice in the Columbia Pacific.” Do you have a suggestion for a topic that affects the local community? Email me at graham@coastradio.org. 2020 and beyond
The second year of Radio for Good started on December 3 (#GivingTuesday). In case you haven’t heard, “Radio for Good” is our 3 year plan to repair, replace, improve and overhaul all of our ageing broadcast equipment. We have our work cut out for us this year as we continue to raise money, purchase and install the new gear and make facility improvements. We are thankful to the individuals and foundations that have contributed to this once-every-twenty-years campaign. That list includes the Templin Foundation, Oregon Community Foundation, Oregon Cultural Trust, Pacific Power Foundation and Martin North Hospitality. We’ll be focusing
on the air-room studios and translator sites this year. We hope to complete the Cannon Beach translator project as well as improve reception and quality for our Wheeler and South Astoria translators. The Board and staff are getting together on January 8th for a strategic planning retreat at China Beach in Ilwaco. This annual event is always a productive day where staff and Board work together to “identify what we do well and maintain it, identify what we don’t do well and fix it, and identify what we are not doing, but should, and implement it.” (-Larry Scott) The biggest change for 2020 is that the Coast Community Radio has a new Program Director, Emily Geddes. After almost 25 years of service, Elizabeth Menetrey is stepping down from her post. When she announced her retirement at the Member Meeting, she was given a double standing ovation. We are grateful for her long and dedicated service to the station, and we wish her all the best that life has to offer. As always, thanks for listening, and thanks for supporting Coast Community Radio. And as Wayne Downing always says, “I’ll see you on the radio, bye-bye!”
FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS by David Campiche Board Member
A
t kmun coast community radio, we
welcome the winter season. This is a time to give thanks for the bounty of riches we are lucky enough to enjoy from our beloved ColumbiaPacific region, whether that be the annual harvest of Dungeness crab, oysters, clams or a rainy night gathering of friends and cuisine. Here, at KMUN, we also would like to offer thanks to our volunteers (over 100 strong), the Board of Directors, and our dedicated professionals. Of course, we remain indebted to you, our loyal followers. Our music is rich with the season. But you have come to expect that, along with much more. These are trying times, and through all, KMUN brings you the best, unbiased news in the Pacific Northwest. We offer plenty of local programing, conversation, food and gardening programs, and updated listings of community events. We offer a local voice that you can trust. But most important, we bring you a familiar voice. Our programmers are your neighbors. Our director, the board and staff are your neighbors. The station has bragging rights to Joanne Rideout and her famous Columbia River Ship Report. We have Carol, Susan, Janet, Dylan and Jack. And we have you, the most generous of supporters. This year we are asking you to remember us in your wills. We have a new endowment program, sometimes called Planned Giving or Will and Gifts. This program guarantees our longevity. It will ensure the best news, music and commentary for generations to come. We are a voice in the storm. We are here on a stormy morning and every morning, come rain or shine. 365 days a year, you can enjoy our inspiring programs, beginning with classical, NPR, and expanding into folk, Terry Gross and a day filled with old favorites and new surprises. But mostly, we are here for you. Please be here for us, for KMUN.
Coast Community Radio is awarded Oregon Cultural Trust Grant
A
storia, or – coast community radio (ccr), the nonprofit radio station in the ColumbiaPacific region, has received a $19,401 grant from Oregon Cultural Trust. Station Manager Graham Nystrom wrote the grant for money toward the Radio For Good (RFG) campaign. The trust awarded CCR $19,401 toward phase two of RFG project, a three year plan to repair, replace, and update all of our broadcast equipment from microphone to transmitter. “We are incredibly grateful that the Oregon Cultural Trust sees the importance of our services, and that they acknowledged the need for our equipment to be updated and reinforced. I hope the NW Coast never sees another storm like we did in 2007, but with the help of community members and grant-making foundations like the Oregon Cultural Trust, Coast Community Radio is doing its part to be prepared. Plus, in the meantime, we’ll keep bringing you great community radio,” enthused Nystrom. Coast Community Radio is a member-supported, volunteeroperated radio station, serving a diverse listening audience along the North Oregon and SW Washington coasts, from Raymond, Washington to Pacific City, Oregon. We strive to provide locally relevant programming, news and emergency information on three stations KMUN, KTCB and KCPB.
If you have questions about our endowment programs, please call Graham at 503-325-0010.

PROGRAMMING NOTES by Emily Geddes Programming Director
O
n one of my first training days here at
the station, Janet asked me, “Are you scared to be taking over such a big job?” My answer was clear and fast, “Of course I am!” The shoes I’ve been tasked with filling are considerable, but I am so excited for the challenge. Since beginning as a programmer with the Mellow almost two years ago, the KMUNies community has fast become an integral part of my life, and I feel immensely lucky. My work life has bounced me between several different worlds, from farm production and museum work to food service and small business ownership. The position of program director combines many of the skills I’ve picked up along the way, and allows me to work for an organization that does tangible good within the community. It’s a bit of a dream come true. 2020 will be a year of learning, and of absorbing everything I can from the wealth of knowledge among our staff and volunteers. I look forward to getting to know you all as we sail forward together on the Good Ship KMUN. bonne année!

E
By Andrew Zingg ver since august, I’ve tried to bring a different
approach to my monthly gig on the Sound of Saturday Night. Every four weeks, I challenge myself and entice listeners by organizing a full two-hour show around one specific lyrical theme. The idea came to me like a fever dream. It was the last Saturday in August, the final hurrah of the season; why not design the night’s show as a tribute to the waning days of summer? I did just that: creating a playlist that spanned from the Beach Boys’ “All Summer Long” to Jonathan Richman’s “That Summer Feeling,” from La Sera’s “Summer of Love” to the Fresh & Onlys’ “Summer of Love.”
Since that fateful August night, I’ve gone on to explore such enduring themes as “Dreams’ and “Telephones.’ I’ve taken a liking to this new format because each show arrives naturally at a distinct sound. As you might imagine, the show on dreams took on a somewhat psychedelic, ethereal quality (think: The Cranberries” “Dreams’ or Cass McCombs’ “Dream-Come-True-Girl’). By contrast, the show on telephones ended up being a more romantic affair (think: The Beatles’ “Any Time At All” or La Luz’s “Call Me in the Day”). Regardless of the theme, I always mine my particular musical interests, which tend towards rock ’n’ roll, garage, punk, and power pop, both contemporary and from the 50s/60s/70s. I also try to make my sets as international as possible, so don’t be surprised if you hear something from Os Mutantes, Los Saicos, or Françoise Hardy thrown in the mix. All of this is to say that the last four months have been a lot of fun, and I am looking forward to more exciting shows on the horizon: I’ve already begun lining up playlists on topics like adolescence, transit, hearts, and rock ’n’ roll. If you find yourself tuning in, don’t hesitate to give the studio line a buzz. I always appreciate requests that build on the night’s theme. saturdays from 8 to 10pm
Food Talk Hosts Merianne Myers and Linda Perkins
K
By Linda Perkins MUN has really been a lovely
bracket around my time here in this town.
One of my first memories of moving to astoria is setting up a little corner on my kitchen counter with a radio and a very comfortable stool so I could listen to KMUN in the evening and do little putzy, kitchen things, dice vegetables, fill pasta, decorate cookies, while my husband Dale was reading. I loved the variety of the programming, everything is always so beautiful. Sometimes I would listen a little too late because some lilting, jazzy piece had kind of mesmerized me and then at the stroke of midnight programming would flip over to death metal, what a shock! Then I knew it was time to go to bed. I’d been doing a bake sale for Clatsop Animal Assistance that had become famous just for its sheer magnitude. Merianne and Pat Milliman were doing a show on KMUN called Food Talk interviewing local people involved in the food industry and one day they asked to interview me. The show airs at 9:30 on
Monday mornings so I think sometimes they had trouble finding restaurant industry people who were lucid at that hour. Well, I am a morning person and I drank my weight in coffee before I went on the air and I think they were just thrilled that I could do sentences and that my eyeballs were not visibly throbbing. Whenever expectations are extremely low I try very hard to be there to exceed them! This is my credo. Pat’s responsibilities changed and she needed to be in Portland a lot, so one day Merianne asked me if I wanted to co-host Food Talk with her. She was giving up on the interview concept and wanted to talk about home cooking and that’s what we do! I love the show because we are not pretending to be fake-perfect, we have far more failures than successes, but it’s still fun. And the show is real, we talk about what we are really doing and cooking. I am also very appreciative of our listeners, all seven of them. If you are one of our listeners I would like to thank you. 1st and 3rd mondays at 9:30am

to 0.5 percent. This will significantly reduce ship emissions, which currently are very polluting. Ships have for many years burned low quality bunker fuel, which is a residue left over from the petroleum refining process. It contains many impurities that become airborne pollution when the fuel is burned.
the 50,000 or so ships that comprise the worldwide merchant fleet. To ensure that ships comply with the new rules, IMO will impose fines on violators. They also have the technology to track a ship’s exhaust with satellites, and have the ability to tell by assessing their exhaust whether they are complying with the new rules.
It’s called IMO 2020, and it’s new set of regulations that require ships to burn less polluting fuel beginning January 1, 2020.
Shippers have known about these rules for some time and have been preparing for them. This means that the worldwide fleet is essentially divided into two segments: ships that are ready to burn the new fuel and ships that are not. Older ships that can’t readily burn the new fuel will need to outfit themselves with scrubbers, to capture pollutants and create exhaust that meets the new standards. Newer ships have been designed with the new regs in mind.
To get an idea of how polluting ships can be, it’s estimated that just one large container ship can produce the same amount of pollution as 50 million cars. Any controls that can lessen that impact will be a welcome change. IMO 2020 seems like a significant step towards clearing the world’s skies of ship air pollution.
The overall goal of IMO 2020 is the reduce the role in global pollution played by

Ship Report recently, you know that during November, I aired a detailed interview with Capt. Robert Johnson, retired Columbia River Bar Pilot and master mariner, all about an exciting new development in the shipping industry, designed to reduce ship air pollution.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is an agency of the United Nations which was formed to promote maritime safety. Rules passed by IMO affect all of the ships in the merchant fleet worldwide, and cruise ships as well. Beginning January 1, the IMO is calling for the reduction of allowable sulfur content in marine fuel from 3.5 percent

East MEETS West by Celeste Endlich
I
started volunteering at kmun a year ago at the Front
Desk when I was new to the community and looking to get involved. I loved the idea of community radio and was hooked the first day I walked into Tillicum House. Over time the idea of programming crossed my mind and I took the radio class and soon thereafter starting programming East meets West.
Spring Membership Drive March 11– 20
My interest in eastern cultures started very young listening to my mother tell me stories of her childhood travelling in Japan. My grandfather was a Japanese history and language professor at the University of Oregon and they traveled and lived in Japan for his research in the 1950’ s. In Japan, my grandmother learned to speak Japanese and how to Sumiv paint. I dove into sociology, anthropology, comparative religion, and Asian studies in college and then moved to Asia. I taught business English at a University in Northern Thailand for two years immersing myself in the community and falling in love with the music scene. On my breaks I traveled throughout Asia and enjoyed my time writing, exploring, collecting stories, and finding local music. East meets West is a program attempting to highlight the syncretism of eastern and western culture, thought, and music. With a different theme each show, I try to combine folk stories, music, poems, and history together. On the show I strive to share some of the music and stories I enjoy so much with my community here on the coast. every other sunday from 8:30 to 9pm

W
ith this new year, I am
looking back over what has been an amazing 24 years as program director at KMUN.
When I started working here there were only 2 other employees. Doug Sweet was station manager, chief engineer, “bottle washer” and just about everything else. Trudy Nudell worked part time as the office manager with an overflowing rolodex and cheerful demeanor. The only instruction I got from my predecessor was to make sure the
community calendars were done correctly. Doug was patient and I gradually found my way through the many challenges that this unique job entails. I see the program director as a kind of conductor. The orchestra, of course, is the volunteer programmerssome one hundred people- who create the shows that you enjoy. It has been my privilege and pleasure to work with them. I don’t want to play favoritesthere are so many! Some have passed on to our sorrow—their radio voices heading out into space at the speed of light. I have been helped greatly in my job by the members of the Community Advisory Board. In our meetings together we have worked on guiding the sound of KMUN, something of which I am very proud.
KMUN is a very special place. It was here that I was able to raise my daughter Alia as a “radio baby.” I taught classes with her in a sling and hers was the voice that said “Happy New Year on the air as 1999 slid into the new millennium. Dear listeners- thank you for your support and advice through the years. I will continue to volunteer at the station in between other new endeavors including helping Alia start school in Tokyo this spring. I wish you all strength, light and love in the year ahead.

FROM THE NEWS & PUBLIC AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT by Joanne Rideout News Director
I
have good news from our small news
department at Coast Community Radio: we’ve gained a cadre of terrific, experience news folk who are willing to volunteer their time to help enhance our news coverage. New to our local correspondent pool is Jacob Lewin, an Oregon journalist with decades of experience in radio. He and his wife recently moved to Astoria from Portland. He’s experienced in the kind of NPR style feature reporting that we appreciate here in our communities. Jacob has already contributed several stories to our airwaves over the past few months, including a piece about homeless issues that is part of our series, “Homeless on the Coast.” In addition to his long experience in the radio realm, he’s also fluent in Spanish. Look for more stories from Jacob in the coming months, as he explores his new home and shares his insights with us.
As always, we are making the most of what we have, to bring you reliable, factual news and information about our local communities. in Pacific Northwest radio; and Roger Rocka, former news director and anchor at KFSN-TV, in Fresno, California. Each of these folks will contribute information and content, and some can stand in as subs as needed when our news staff needs to be away. Dylan Hauser Shaulk continues in his role as news anchor on Monday and Tuesdays, and also handles some operational duties at the station. Dylan’s welcome presence on the air adds another voice to our local news hosting, and allows me the latitude to work evenings and record municipal meetings for podcasting and reporting. As always, we are making the most of what we have, to bring you reliable, factual news and information about our local communities.
We also are now having regular meetings with an impressive group of local journalists whose names you might recognize and who have agreed to continue to participate in news gathering for us. A recent meeting at Tillicum House featured (in addition to Jacob Lewin) Nancy McCarthy, former Cannon Beach Gazette managing editor who is now a Cannon Beach city councilor; Joan Herman, former Daily Astorian reporter and educator, and now Astoria city councilor; Kathleen Morgain, former Coast Community Radio news host and producer, who’s also had a long career

mun has an average of nine music-filled programs a day! That is not that different
from other radio stations. What makes KMUN unique is 75% of those programs are being played by your neighbors! There is actually a person in the studio inserting CD into the player, flipping albums on the turntable or plugging a memory stick into the computer. This is the music they selected just for you, the listener. I was talking to a member about how much she loved listening to Caribbean Moon on Friday nights from 7-9pm. It’s a show that she and her husband tune in to weekly. The surprise for her was that when the Dead Hour from 9-10pm came on she enjoyed it too, despite not being a big fan of the Grateful Dead! We threshed out that the music was so pleasing because the programmer had added his love of the music to the show. That’s one of the most meaningful ways making KMUN your community radio station and very unique in the world of broadcast.
FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CORNER by Janet Fryberger Membership Specialist
What programs are your favorite? KMUN brings you local relevant news thanks to our growing news department, public affairs shows such as A Story Told and the new exciting program Cold Coast, that give the culture and flavor of this region. And lots of music! Turn to pages 14, 15 and 16 and find your old favorites and maybe some new ones! Listen to them live or go to the website and listen as a podcast.

WHEN GIVING IS ALL WE HAVE BY ALBERTO RÍOS
few months ago, I attended
the Coast Community Radio Class and became a KMUN programmer. I’d intended to take the class solely to learn about the equipment but the next thing you know … I’m part of the Wednesday night She Bop crew! If you’re interested in programming, I urge you to fill out the volunteer application and start the ball rolling – it’s challenging and a lot of fun! Additionally, it has opened my eyes even more to the singularity of our particular enterprise – a community voice that speaks to and consists of the people who live in this area. Now that I’m on the other side of the mic, I understand more about the thought and heart that is behind what it takes WINTER 2020 THE CURRENT

to create good radio. I have a deeper appreciation especially for shows like World of Bach, Wow & Flutter, Day of the Velvet Voice, Soul Serenade, and Myth & Melodies – all deeply personal shows with tremendous breadth and emotional depth. Our locally programmed shows reflect the personality, taste, humor, preoccupations and history of unique individuals who are our friends and neighbors. What a gift! The generous donations of money and time from our members and volunteers have always amazed me – we simply live within a fabulous community out here! And now I hear the additional offerings of heart and soul that are behind every Coast Community Radio show. Are you listening?

In Memoriam of Laura Snyder Submitted by Debbie Twombley
Some of you may have been friends with Laura Snyder, a former programmer at KMUN, who has bravely fought metastatic cancer for a number of years, and lost her battle in September 2019. Laura was the owner of Lucy’s Books, a reincarnation of Barbara Hansel’s Parnassus Books... She was an awesome person, a great writer, a fun programmer on Women’s and Folk Music. A memorial was held for her in September.

Would it be possible for you to forward my request to the host of Crossroads? I would love a playlist for the show on August 31— great show. Thanks in advance and best regards, carol yaple P.S. I enjoyed listening to Carol Newman’s program earlier in the week. Her guest (I tuned in late so don’t know her name) read a beautiful translation of a prayer. I would love to get a copy of those words. They were so beautiful. Could someone put me in touch with either Carol or her guest so I can try to ask for the prayer. Thank you, catherine
