OPERATING LOANS GROW AS PRODUCTION COSTS SOAR

As the cost of inputs continues in increase, many farmers have been forced to seek additional financing from their lenders, even as interest rates rise.

WIN FALLS, Idaho — Farmers and ranchers are asking their lenders for bigger loans this year due to the surging cost of fuel, fertilizer, feed and labor. “Expenses are through the roof,” said Eric Bennett, relationships manager at Northwest Farm Credit Services. Some fertilizer is twice the price it was a year ago, and diesel that was 92 cents a gallon two years ago is now $5 a gallon, he said. “That’s a problem. Fuel’s just a killer,” he said. Hay is $260 a ton and corn silage is $60 to $65 a ton standing in the field, compared to $38 to $42 a ton last year, he said. Producers across the country are feeling the sting of inflation and supply-related shortages — due to such factors as the war in Ukraine and shipping problems — sending the price of some inputs skyward. Eric As farmers tried to keep up with spiralBennett ing operating costs farm lending in the first quarter of the year mushroomed, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Total non-real estate bank loans to farmers were up nearly 18% year over year in the first quarter to about $93.4 billion. Operating loans accounted for about 62% of that and were up more than 31% year over year to $57.8 billion. Although the number of operating loans reached an alltime low for the first quarter, the average size of those loans approached a record high, the bank reported. Fortunately, most farmers were financially healthy going into the year. “Most producers had positive earnings in the previous two years and increased their working capital, positioning them to handle a difficult year,” said Doug Robison, Idaho president of Northwest Farm Credit Services. The 2022 operating renewal season went well despite higher expenses, he said. See Costs, Page A8

Summer is grilling season. Here are some recipes for the grill from the American Lamb Board.

American lamb shoulder chops

Ingredients • ½ cup olive oil • 2 tbsp fresh oregano, finely chopped • 2 tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped • 2 tbsp fresh mint, finely chopped • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 1 lemon, zested and juiced • Pinch of red pepper flakes • Kosher salt and freshly ground, to taste • 4 thick (3/4-inch) American lamb shoulder chops Directions In a mixing bowl combine the olive oil, oregano, dill, mint, garlic, lemon zest + juice, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Take the marinade and pour into a large Ziploc bag. Add the lamb shoulder chops to the bag, seal, and then gently massage the marinade into the lamb. Place in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or overnight

By Dana for best results. Heat the grill to medium-high heat. While the grill heats bring your lamb shoulder chops to room temperature. Next, place the chops on the grill and cook for about 2 to 3 minutes per side. Once the chops have reached an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit, you will need to let them rest for a minimum of 3 minutes to finish cooking. Slice, serve, and enjoy!

Grilled lamb kabobs with sesame sauce

Ingredients Kabobs • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil • 1 medium onion, quartered • 1 clove garlic, peeled • 4 sprigs fresh parsley • 1 Tablespoon cumin • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest • 3 Tablespoons lemon juice • 1 tablespoon kosher salt • 1 1/4 pounds Ameerican lamb loin chops, cut into 1-inch cubes (or lamb leg, shoulder or stew meat) Sesame Sauce

• 1 cup Greek yogurt • 3 Tablespoons tahini • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice • Salt and Pepper (to taste) To Garnish • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds • 1 Tablespoon pomegranate seeds • 1 Tablespoon chopped fresh parsley • Warm pita, for serving • Grilled lemons Directions In a blender, combine the oil, onion, garlic, parsley, cumin, lemon zest, lemon juice and salt and puree until smooth. Transfer the marinade to a resealable plastic bag and add the lamb. Seal and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or preferably overnight. Light a grill or preheat a

grill pan. Drain the lamb, shaking off the excess marinade. Thread the lamb onto 4 long skewers. Grill over high heat, turning occasionally, until lightly charred, about 5 minutes for medium-rare meat. Sesame Sauce Add yogurt, tahini and lemon juice to a large bowl and stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. In a small skillet, toast the sesame seeds and cumin seeds until fragrant. Spread the sesame sauce on a large serving plate and drizzle with the olive oil. Sprinkle with toasted seeds, pomegranate seeds and parsley. Arrange the grilled lamb skewers on top. Serve.

Grilled lamb kebab with smokey eggplant, basil and feta dip, and romesco sauce

Ingredients Grilled lamb • 3 pounds boneless leg of American lamb • 2-3 teaspoons olive oil • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt • 1 teaspoon lemon pepper • 1 tablespoon paprika • 1 tablespoon garlic powder • 1/4 cup ﬁnely chopped dill

• 1/4 cup toasted slivered almonds • 1-2 tablespoons toasted breadcrumbs (if needed, to thicken) • Salt and pepper to taste Directions The lamb Cut the leg of lamb into roughly 3-inch cubes. If you feel like a skewered kebab and have bamboo skewers, get them out and soak them in water. Add the lamb to a large mixing bowl and add all the remaining marinade ingredients to the bowl and mix well. Allow to marinate for at least 15-20 minutes at room temperature or up to overnight in

the refrigerator. Heat the grill to 400 degrees. Place the eggplant (in prep for the dip) on the hot grill for 5 minutes before the meat. Add the meat and sear on all sides, 2-3 minutes per side, turning the eggplant along with the meat until it’s blistered and dripping juices (about 20 minutes). Use a thermometer to test for the proper temperature. While the meat grills, prepare the dipping sauces. Once the meat is grilled allow to rest 5-10 minutes before slicing.

ost purebred bull and female sales are held on the ranch because breeders want the customers to meet the family, see the cowherd and partake in a beef barbecue or pre-sale party. Many big outﬁts have invested heavily in auction facilities while others just clean out a hay barn or tractor shed. A growing number of sales are held at a local restaurant where animals are sold via video, while breeders on a tighter budget and fewer bulls, sell them at an auction market. Selling at the local sale barn is a great way to sell because they already have the facilities, the sound system, the restaurant and the clerking. One downside is that some people get their feelings hurt. Take the sale barn auctioneer, for example. He can be a world champion auctioneer, know all the buyers and may even own the auction market and still the breeder will bring in a professional purebred auctioneer who wears a sports coat and

During the sale the guy who sells every week on the stool now filled by the foreigner will continually turn down the sound system because the purebred auctioneer ALWAYS turns it up too high even when buyers are stuffing their ears with cotton. The regular guy will do everything in his power to mess up the imported prima donna from out of state. Then there are the ring men. I’m qualified to speak on this subject because for 40 years I traveled the country as a ring man who worked purebred sales if the cus-

tomer had spent enough money on advertising to justify my presence. Whenever I worked a sale at an auction market, even if I knew the regular crew and preferred their company to the ring men I traveled with, I got the feeling that my presence was as welcome as a crying baby at a wedding or funeral. I especially remember an auction at a sale barn I regularly frequented to buy and sell cattle. John (not his real name) is the best ring man I’ve ever seen. He opened and shut the hydraulic doors, rapidly moved the cattle in and out, all while catching bids from INSIDE the sale ring. John stood behind the

bull board right in front of the auctioneer who sat at an elevated position and on the very ﬁrst animal to sell that day John was catching bids that went unnoticed by the dressed up guys OUTSIDE the sale ring when the auctioneer stopped his chant to say to John, “You don’t have to do that son, we have professionals here to do that today!” I saw steam coming out of John’s ears as he dipped the end of his whip in fresh cow manure, popped his popper and “professionally” splattered cow manure all over the sports jacket and tie of Mr. Fancy Pants auctioneer who may have also swallowed a speck or two. Chalk one point up for the home team. The war was on and I knew it wasn’t going to end well. When the auctioneer sold

a bull to a local rancher John would let the ring man climb all the way up the stairs to fetch the buyer’s name and right before he’d announce it John would smirk and say, “Oh, that’s Mr. Jenkins,” or “That’s the Draggin’ S Ranch.” As previously mentioned, John also controlled the “in” and “out” gates which he started to open and close faster and faster until Mr. Fancy Pants could barely keep up. He looked as winded as a fat guy trying to run a marathon. John waited for his final “coup de grace” until the very last bull. I previously mentioned that back when this happened John still utilized a whip instead of a plastic paddle and John was so good with that whip he could hit a fly in midair. So when he shaved one sixteenth of an inch off the end of the auctioneer’s nose on the last bull he said it was an accident and apologized profusely, but I think the only thing he was sorry about was that his whip didn’t cut as deep as the auctioneer calling him “son” in front of the home crowd and implying he wasn’t a “professional”.

Continued from Page A5 The eggplant, basil & feta dip Add all the dip ingredients to the work bowl of your food processor. Allow the eggplant to sit on a plate roughly 5 minutes until you can safely handle it. Remove the blistered skin, then mix the hot eggplant in the food processor with everything else. Transfer the warm sauce to a serving bowl and drizzle with olive oil. The spicy romesco sauce: In the same food processor (no worries if it’s still got eggplant dip in it), add all the sauce ingredients. Pulse until the sauce just comes together. Transfer the sauce to a serving dish and dip the grilled lamb into it! To serve, thinly slice the meat and serve hot with dips and herbs. This goes great into a warm pita or garlic ﬂat bread!

Grilled lamb burgers with feta slaw

Ingredients Burgers • 1 lb American ground lamb • 3 cloves garlic minced • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 tbsp dried parsley • 1 1/2 tsp onion salt • 1 tsp black pepper • 4 hamburger buns • 1/2 cup pickled onions • 1 cup greens (spinach or spring mix) optional Feta Slaw • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 tsp salt • 1/2 tsp pepper • 3 cups shredded cabbage • 1/2 cup crumbled feta Roasted Tomato Aioli Courtesy American Lamb Board • 15 oz can roasted toma- Lamb burger toes drained • 1 cup mayonnaise • 2 cloves garlic • 1 tsp salt • 1/2 tsp pepper Directions Burger Patties Combine ground lamb, olive oil, garlic, parsley, black pepper, and onion salt in a large bowl Mix well with clean hands or a wooden spoon or spatula. Form into 4 equal sized patties (about 1/4 pound each). Flatten to about 3/4 inch thick and press your thumb into the center of each patty. This will prevent some of the shrinking of the patty during cooking. Grill at 400 degrees for about 4 minutes on each side, or until internal temperature is 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Toppings For the feta slaw, add lemon juice, olive oil, black pepper, and salt to a large bowl. Whisk to combine. Add shredded cabbage and crumbled feta to the dressing and toss to combine. For the tomato aioli, add drained roasted tomatoes, garlic, salt, pepper, and mayo to a blender jar. Blend until smooth. How To Build The Burger Start with a toasted bun, add greens if desired (like spinach or spring mix), drizzle some roasted tomato aioli, top with your perfectly cooked lamb burger, add feta slaw, and crown it with some pickled onions. Truly a burger made better.

“Higher input costs made it necessary to increase operating commitments for many borrowers,” Robison said. But customers remain well positioned despite the Doug challenging inflation- Robison ary environment, and he expects the number of operating loans as well as loan amounts to grow, he said. The Producer Price Index for farm products in the U.S. increased by more than 34% from April of 2021 through April of 2022, he said. “The costs for fertilizer and chemical increased at an even faster pace, with the Producer Price Index for nitrogen-based products increasing more than 49% while spot prices for many products have increased by more than 100%,” he said. Input costs for agricultural producers have significantly outpaced the inflation rate often cited in relation to the Consumer Price Index, which has been above 8%, he said. See Loans, Page A11

Loan officer Bennett has already updated quite a few operating loans since the first of the year, increasing the amount because producers underestimated the cost of fuel and fertilizer. By mid-May they had already determined it was going to take more money to grow this year’s crops, he said. “The demand for borrowing has increased because of the anticipated cost of production,” he said. The increase varies, but it’s up 10% on the low end with some loans up 40% year over year, he said.

Financial health

Producers came into the year in good shape, and Northwest Farm Credit has been able to meet their increased needs, he said. “I think, in general, credit quality was up because most people made money the last couple of years,” he said. People added working capital and paid down debt. There wasn’t a lot of debt from last year’s operating cycle, he said.

Labor is another component of the high cost structure, whether it’s crops or dairy. He knows one dairyman who’s already given milkers three raises this year. On average, those wages are $14 to $15 an hour, he said. Farmers can mitigate some of the risks with crop insurance and revenue protection programs, as well as futures and options to lock in a price floor, he said. “It would help if the expense side would come down,” he said. But oil and fuel prices aren’t likely to come down, and labor costs aren’t coming down, he said. “Farmers are seeing inflation way higher than 8%. Just the cost of doing business is much more than a year ago, two years ago or five years ago,” he said. “Demand for credit is going to climb,” he said.

Across town, D.L. Evans Bank is also seeing a significant rise in agricultural loans. “We increased our operating lines about 35% on average,” said Justin Willis, vice president commercial and agricultural loan officer. Typically, operating loans are fairly close to the previous year, he said. “This is the highest year of cost of production farmers have seen in my career (21 years),” he said. Farm diesel is $5 to $5.24 a gallon, up $1 to $1.50 since the beginning of the year. Most producers have on-farm storage for fuel and purchased their needs earlier this year in the $4.50 a gallon range, he said. “So they dodged that bullet a little bit,” he said.

Water was the biggest concern this year until rains came in April and May and brightened the outlook. But the earlier expectations of cutbacks changed cropping plans. There’s a lot less corn being grown and a lot more wheat as prices neared double-digits a bushel, he said. “We’re going to be pretty darn short on corn silage this year. Demand will stay high, supply will stay low and it will drive the price high,” he said. Feed costs — 60% to 66% of a dairy’s cost of production — are going to stay high, he said. “Dairies are making money now. The concern for dairies is breakeven is going to stay high, but will the milk price hold?” he asked. If the milk price doesn’t stay at $20 to $21 a hundredweight, dairies are going to lose money, he said. Row crop farmers are going to be OK, he said.

Fuel was definitely higher this spring than a year ago, and farmers have already absorbed the increase. But other costs are high as well, he said. “Repairs, maintenance, parts have gone up dramatically, if we can get them … even belts,” Willis said. All have at least doubled, and the price of used equipment has gone up. An older Peterbilt semitruck that would normally sell for $15,000 to $20,000 has doubled in price, he said. Another issue for farmers is interest rates. The Federal Reserve raised the prime interest rate to 4.75% in midJune to tame inflation, and it’ll probably continue to raise interest rates through the year, he said.

On the flip side, crop prices have increased substantially. The price of hay is up 30% from the beginning of the year, and there’s a lot of speculation it will top $300 a ton across the board, not just for dairy hay, he said. Grain corn prices last year were pushing $5 to $6 a bushel. Contracts were $7 to $7.50 this spring, and the price in June was $8 to $8.50. Wheat prices went from $5.50 to $6 a bushel last year to as high as $9.25 now, he said.

“On a positive note, budgeted revenue is up 40% to 45%,” Willis said. Because growers don’t contract all of their anticipated production, some of that revenue might be pushing 50% higher than last year, he said. “The budgeted expenses are up 35% but could be 40% because of rising costs,” he said. The good news is projected net profit margins have increased 2% to 5% from last year due to the high commodity prices, he said. “So even though production costs have increased in 2022, revenue is exceeding those costs and profitability is projected to increase by 2% to 5% from the previous year,” Willis said. Increased costs will increase the bank’s lines of credit for farmers, but they’re all going to get renewed, he said. “Banks love ag credit. Food is not a commodity that goes out of style. It’s a good risk for the bank. In agriculture, there’s always somewhere to take your crop to sell … people always need food,” Willis said. He is worried, however, about food costs next year and how that’s going to affect consumer spending and the economy. This year’s higher commodity prices haven’t gone into the food chain yet, but they will after harvest, he said.

USDA Agricultural Research Service LOGAN, Utah — The USDA Agricultural Research Service is leading a project dubbed “Beenome100” to produce high-quality maps of the genomes of at least 100 bee species, capturing the diversity of bees in the United States, representing each of the major bee taxonomic groups in this country. There are about 4,000 native bee species in this country from the giant, colorful Sonoran bumble bee to the 0.08-inch solitary bee Perdita minima. There also are more than 55 non-native bee species, some of which are agriculturally essential such as the European honey bee and the alfalfa leaf cutter bee. “An aim of Beenome100 is to create a ﬁrst-of-itskind library of high-quality, highly detailed genome maps that will help researchers answer the big questions like what genetic diﬀerences make some bee species more vulnerable to

climate change or whether a bee species is likely to be more susceptible to a pesticide,” explained entomologist Jay Evans with the ARS Bee Research Laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland, and co-lead of the project. Once a genome is mapped, the data becomes publicly available for scientists to work on the next step: linking functions to speciﬁc genes. The data is housed in the “i5k Workspace@NAL,” an online “toolshed” at ARS’ National Agricultural Library, which allows scientists from many organizations to work cooperatively on bioinformatics. There are many reasons why having these genomic maps covering the taxonomic diversity of bees are useful tools, added entomologist Michael Branstetter with the ARS Pollinating Insect-Biology, Management, Systematics Research Unit in Logan, Utah. When endangered bee species are present, we need to be cautious about collecting too many indi-

July 2022 viduals in our eﬀorts to survey for them, and this risk is likely growing” Branstetter said. “But with their genome documented, ﬂowers may be able to be swabbed for the DNA of bees that have visited, and this information could be used to non-destructively monitor species.” One species this is being tried out on is the Franklin’s bumble bee, which hasn’t been seen in a decade in its tiny range in southern Oregon and northern California. Its genome was mapped from

If the system works and matching bee DNA is found in a flower swab, that would be documented proof of finding a particular bee like this one without taking a specimen from the wild. In the bigger picture, the bee genomes will help provide a better understanding of how bees as a whole fit into the world and how they vary and change with their environment from the evolution of specialization between bee species and particular flowers to the impact of non-native bee species. “Take the threatened Mojave poppy bee, a

quarter-inch-long desert bee native to parts of Utah, Nevada and California, where it is a very important specialist pollinator of the endangered Las Vegas bearpoppy and the dwarf bearclaw poppy. And it belongs to a taxonomic family that hasn’t ever been sequenced for genomics,” Branstetter said. He hopes that knowing more about its genes will make the genetic basis for this specialist trait and how it evolved clearer. On this most recent collecting trip in Arizona, Branstetter was especially after an unusual type of bee to add to the Beenome

library: parasite cuckoo bees, a group of solitary bee species that reproduce by laying their eggs in other bee’s nests. Parasite cuckoo bees are supposed to be rather rare. “We found not just one or two, they were abundant. We found specimens of parasite bees from three diﬀerent genera,” he said. That may be some of the most important information to come from the Beenome100 Project, said Branstetter, “Information that will teach us more about what bees we really have in our environment and how better to conserve the bees we have.”

Another useful tool is the NRCS Cropland In-Field Soil Health Assessment Guide. It’s easy to use with a one-page worksheet for a yes-or-no checklist to assess whether the soil is meeting healthy criteria. It helps identify resource concerns, and growers don’t have to participate in conservation programs to use it, he said. Each item on the checklist includes recommended testing times, such as after rain or irrigation, with adequate moisture, before tillage, and before and during the growing season. The worksheet helps growers assess 11 indicators: • Soil cover. • Residue breakdown. • Surface crust. • Ponding and water infiltration. • Penetration resistance. • Water-stable aggregate. • Soil structure. • Soil color. • Plant roots. • Biological diversity. • Biopores. RANCHING HOLISTICALLY

BLACKFOOT, Idaho — Wendy and Mark Pratt came from ranching backgrounds. Her family homesteaded in 1870 and Mark’s family in 1904. She grew up on a ranch 10 miles away from their present operation near Blackfoot, Idaho. She and Mark married in 1990 and have 3 kids. When her kids were young she stayed home with them. “We got into low-stress handling of livestock, which was fun, and this added another dimension to what we were doing every day. Mark’s mom raises border collies, and the dogs are an integral part of the ranch,” Wendy said. “My dad was an old-fashioned naturalist and I became focused on conservation ranching when Mark and I took our ﬁrst course in holistic management 30 years ago,” Wendy said. Ranchers were battling a lot of bad press — a movement to get cattle oﬀ public lands, like “Cattle Free in ’93” and other anti-cattle propaganda, she said. See Ranch, Page B9

We can see how everything is connected and fits together. There is a social, financial and ecological element to our activities; that’s the basic tenet of holistic management,” she said. One thing that helped give her confidence in advocating for the livestock industry was when she started keeping books for the grazing association and canal companies. “I figured out how water works in the big scheme of things and how land management agencies (BLM, state land and Forest Service) work. Our grazing association is a co-op and I could see some of the challenges we face are typical across all disciplines when working with people. “Ranchers and cattle are blamed for everything from health issues (claiming beef is an unhealthy food) to animal welfare, to climate change,” Wendy said. “The public is fed a constant stream of misinformation.” “An article in the Journal of Nutrition talked about the environmental cost of eating meat. People don’t question the environmental costs of producing other foods, so why is meat singled out? Beef is a great source of nutrients, which wasn’t addressed in the article.” See Pratt, Page B10

She started writing a blog 10 years ago, called The Pastoral Muse. “Writing is therapy for me. My mom wrote a book, and both my grandmas were poets and writers. They were all historians, and I also like to write about history.” Women have always played a crucial role in ranching. “I keep the books and help with the cattle and feeding. I still feed one load to the heifers in winter; it’s my ﬁtness program,” she said. In recent years Wendy has served on several boards, including the Idaho Sage Grouse Advisory Committee, the Partners Advisory Council for the University of Idaho Rangeland Center, and the planning team for the Sage Grouse and Grazing Research project that is still ongoing. “I’ve learned how the research world works. They try to prove everything except that cattle can maintain healthy rangelands if managed correctly,” she said. “Most research, by design, has a narrow focus, which rarely addresses what we really need. These are good people with good intentions but producers need more holistic solutions” Wendy says. Wendy is also on the Idaho Ag Credit Board, and the Idaho Soil and Water Conservation Commission and is supervisor of the local Conservation District. “We need to start looking at soil as habitat for organisms and

how healthy soils are the best place to store water. This important aspect is left out of a lot of conversations,” she says. Even projects funded by Natural Resources Conservation Service and other government programs may not be best for the land. “For instance, moving from flood irrigation to sprinklers to ‘conserve’ water may not be the right thing to do ecologically. There are many benefits from flood irrigation,” she explains. Water not used by plants goes into nearby canals, streams, or the aquifer, keeping springs and streams flowing longer. Ditches provide wildlife habitat. “Our ranch has lots of trees because of ditches. This fact is often ignored when people try to conserve water by reducing or moving away from flood irrigation,” she says. We need to counter the bad press ranchers get, she says. “One bright spot is the growing number of pro-grazing groups and soil health advocates, and people interested in regenerative agriculture. But there’s also a large group touting plantbased diets and lab-cultured meat and very much against animal agriculture.” “I did a TEDx talk in Idaho Falls, on ‘Grazing to Heal the Earth,’ telling the crucial story of photosynthesis and cycling of plants by ruminants, and how important it is to store water in the soil,” she says. “We can all do our part.”

indicator to determine if it meets the assessment criteria. Sirovatka demonstrated how to test for some of those healthy soil objectives using a shovel, a penetrometer and rings to hold water. He showed growers what they should be looking for, what healthy soil looks like and what could benefit from conservation practices. “If you have resources concerns, you could employ NRCS practices to address those, help solve those problems,” he said. In another demonstration, Shawn Nield, state soil scientist with NRCS in Idaho, led growers through a soil pit comparison. The demonstration showed noticeable differences in a no-till field with residue cover and a tilled field just yards apart. He pointed out the different chemistry, acidity, soil structure and temperature, compaction, porosity and biodiversity. He also did a demonstration with a rainfall simulator on pans of soil to show that no-till and residue cover benefit soil

A passion for animals By BRIAN WALKER For the Capital Press COLVILLE, Wash. — Angie Barton was always drawn to animals while growing up in Vancouver, Wash. Her mother gave her a pony when she was 8 and a horse at 14. “I grew up with stories of my mom’s sheep ranch and homesteading,” Barton said. had a dog, two horses, two ponies, two goats, chickens and rabbits. “I was allowed to keep my animals at the old barn and eventually I began working at the main dairy as scraper and then relief feeder,” she said. “I was fascinated by the process of dairying, helped with a lot of different aspects and learned a lot.” Barton later dabbled with her own small farm, milking a Jersey heifer before moving to Colville to be closer to her mom. It’s also where she met Dennis. Angie brought plenty of company with her during the move. “I brought four horses up, including the one I had been given when I was 14, along with three sheep, my favorite chicken and my huge pet pig Pickles,” Barton said. After Angie and Dennis were married, her farm skills were immediately put to use in the hay fields. “It was helpful that I had already learned to run some equipment on the dairy I had worked for,” she said. Angie’s farming roots also deepened when she traded hay for a Jersey heifer that she milked. “I also added to my animals, acquiring Alpine goats, Icelandic sheep, and whatever other animals would come my way,” she said. “I was given a couple of llamas, then another pony, I bought some goslings, found some peafowl and began raising guinea pigs and Muscovy ducks. “The old dairy of Dennis’ grandparents became a perfect place to expand my desire to have animals. Dennis is pretty good with the fact that I have this animal collection.” The couple has 465 total acres with 130 acres of it being farmable. The farm acquired its raw milk license in 2012. “Dennis remodeled the old milkhouse per the raw milk dairy guidelines,” Angie said. “We sell, word of mouth, to whomever wants raw Jersey milk.” Angie’s twin daughters Claire and Ellie, 31, assist with milking the Jersey cows and goats. Dennis and Angie’s children Rachael, 24, and Luke, 17, pitch in wherever they can. All four live on the farm. “We continue to grow alfalfa, selling the extra and we are now up to milking five cows,” Angie said. “We milk in the same old barn that Claire and Ellie’s great grandparents milked.” The cows are milked one at a time the old-fashioned way — with a belly milker. “It works OK, but it would be nice to have a small pit parlor or some other updated system of milking to cut the time down and make it more efficient and easier,” she said. The family doesn’t rely solely on its dairy or hay income as Dennis has worked for more than 40 years as an equipment operator for a construction company. “We enjoy our sweet Jersey milk, making butter, ice cream, cheese curds, mozzarella and cottage cheese,” Angie said. “Oftentimes there is enough milk for several calves, goat kids, the pet pigs and the butcher hogs, the chickens and even the occasional odd animal like a baby llama, an orphaned guinea pig and our newest bottle baby, a yak.” As for the immediate future, Dennis and Angie plan to continue to provide milk for their family and those who hear about the farm. “I can see Dennis and I always having a cow or two even just for our own use, even after he retires,” she said.

One of the issues with assessments of possible nontarget organism damage by Bt corn has been that each study was limited in scope, environment or size. The paper’s three authors have made up for these shortfalls by systematically pulling together data from studies in 12 bibliographic databases, 17 specialized webpages, and the reference sections of 78 review articles that all met the highest standards for research quality. “We gathered together hundreds of individual studies published between 1997 to 2020 that have looked at whether growing Bt corn changed the environmental abundance of non-target animals such as arthropods, earthworms and nematodes, especially as compared to growing non-genetically modified corn accompanied by the pesticide necessary to control major pests,” explained ARS entomologist Steve Naranjo, director of the U.S. Arid Land Agricultural Research Center in Maricopa, Arizona and one of authors of the study. Naranjo and entomologists Joerg Romeis and Michael Meissle with Agroscope, ARS’ Swiss counterpart, found that this massive aggregation of data showed Bt corn had no negative effects on most invertebrate groups including ladybeetles, flower bugs, and lacewings. The researchers even examined if authorship or financial support by biotechnology companies affected the outcome of individual studies. “It might be a bit surprising but according to the analysis, when any negative effects by Bt corn on nontarget organisms were found in the data, they were attributed more often in studies with private sector support than when no backing by biotech companies was declared,” Meissle added. “But after all the number crunching was done, what we found was that, overall, Bt corn just does not have negative impacts on nontarget organisms,” said Naranjo. The quality standards for which studies would be included in the meta-analysis and which would be cut were outlined and vetted by stakeholders, scientists not involved in the meta-analysis project and even members of the journal’s review board, none of whom knew if any study’s data showed a negative impact on non-target organisms or not. The result is the largest pool of high-quality data anyone has ever analyzed for this purpose consisting of 7279 individual invertebrate records from 233 experiments in 120 articles, 75 percent of which were from peer-reviewed journals. The entire data set also has been published in BMC Research Notes. In summary, this major meta-analysis largely proved out previous individual studies. Bt corn represents a highly selective pest control technology with relatively few negative consequences for non-target invertebrates, especially when compared with the use of broad-spectrum insecticides for managing Bt-targeted pests, according to the scientists.

Farm input costs continue to rise, USDA report shows By SIERRA DAWN McCLAIN Capital Press

A USDA report released June 30 shows that farm input costs continue to rise, putting additional ﬁnancial pressure on farmers and ranchers. The study, called the Agricultural Prices report, looked at farm input costs in May 2022 compared to input costs one month prior and one year prior. USDA collected data for the May Prices Paid Index by randomly contacting more than 8,500 farms nationwide with an average response rate of 75% to 80%. The report found that farmers across America continue to face rising costs for feed, fertilizer, fuels and other inputs. In May, the price of livestock feed increased 0.8% from April and 15% from May 2021. Although concentrates fell in price, that was more than oﬀset by higher prices for complete feeds, feed grains, supplements, hay and forages. Fertilizer in May cost 6.2% more than it did the month prior, in April. Prices for potash and phos-

up 6% from April, and fuel cost 67% more this May than it did in May of 2021. USDA data shows that, compared to the month prior, May prices were higher for diesel and gasoline but lower for LP gas. Machinery in May cost 0.6% less than it did in April — one of the few areas where input costs decreased. Prices slightly declined for tractors, self-propelled machines and other machinery. However, machinery costs were

19% higher than a year ago. In a statement this week, American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall said American farmers and ranchers continue to “grapple with increased costs of growing food and ﬁber.” “While some ranchers are seeing increases in commodity prices, their gains are being eaten up by higher expenses,” said Duvall. “Many farmers and ranchers are concerned they won’t be able to break even, much less make a proﬁt.”

ulty mentor on a lab or field research project, including writing the proposal. The two-semester project is an opportunity to look inside “the hows and whys of the research,” Lewis said, and “to understand a little more about why it’s important” to organizations such as USDA, National Institutes for Health, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the military. He said the degree program aims to provide a strong background for graduate study or various jobs — from working at agencies and agriculture companies to helping to craft policy. “If there’s any place we need understanding of science, it’s in policy development,” Lewis said. He said the major is largely a result of discussions he and his wife, UI professor Shirley Luckhart, who focuses on malaria, have had over the years. They identified a need for scientists to work together toward broader understanding, including moving beyond the sometimes silolike confines of specialized research. Another need for the major, which Lewis said is unique in the Northwest, centers on an increasingly dynamic job market. “Basic fundamental training, problem solving and integration of knowledge is essential to everything,” he said.

Ranch woman makes dream a reality By HEATHER SMITH THOMAS For the Capital Press

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Marty Stingley and her husband, Russ, are ranchers near Ellensburg, Wash. She grew up in Kirkland, a suburb across the lake from Seattle, and came to Ellensburg to go to college. “I planned to become a graphic designer or an architect,” Marty said. “Between classes I had a job at a local hotel restaurant, where I met my future father-in-law. He introduced me to his son, Russ, who was born and raised on a ranch. It was his dream to continue ranching,” she said. She joined him in making that dream a reality. “We moved to our current place in 1978. It’s just 160 acres and he was converting from sheep to cattle — and had to teach this city girl about farming and ranching,” Marty said. “It was a hard time to try to get started on our own; the interest rates were high and we were trying to buy a place and equipment.” They had a neighbor with sheep who got ﬂooded out that winter. He brought his 200 ewes to the Stingleys’ corrals. “We helped lamb those ewes and that was quite an experience for me,” she said. “I had a crash course in animal husbandry.” She and Russ have four children — Ryan, Ruley and Rustin and a daughter, Katie. They now have 12 grandchildren, and another one on the way. “Our kids now have their own ranches, but we all live within 5 miles of one another and run our cows together,” Marty said. About 15 years ago they started a trucking business. Two of their boys run the trucks, hauling hay and cattle across the Northwest. “We run two companies as a family, Stingley Ranch Inc. and Stingley Ranch Trucking Inc. I handle the licensing, permitting and fuel-mileage taxes for the trucks and paperwork for employees. We have seven trucks and hire six full-time drivers.” They also acquired more

Marty and Russ Stingley. farm ground and raise hay — timothy, alfalfa and oats as a cover crop. Cattle are turned out on rangeland in early April for summer pasture. The family runs 850 Angus and Angus cross cows together and put cattle on rented crop ﬁelds in the fall after harvest. “Our grandchildren are part of our lives, and hopefully some of them will be interested in carrying on

with ranching. We didn’t come from generations of ranchers; we are trying to build our own legacy, blazing the trail for our grandchildren,” she said. In 2007, Russ was chosen as Cattleman of the Year by the local organization and Marty joined the local CattleWomen. She was the Kittitas County CattleWoman of the Year in 2016, and Washington State

CattleWoman of the Year in 2018. Two years ago, she was selected to be on the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and represents the Northwest on the national board for beef promotion. Marty also has a flock of 50 ewes. “I acquired a bum lamb that nobody claimed. It was found abandoned out in the hills, all by itself on our leased ground,” she said. “My son checked around for an owner before bringing it home. We did some trading, and that’s how my flock got started. My sheep are Columbia and Suffolk with a little Hampshire.” She is also a photographer. In 2008 she was asked to take photos for neighbors. That led to more requests and now she has a photography business. She

takes pictures for the local school and for the fair. “I also shoot pictures for the rodeo, and for weddings, portraits, etc. It deﬁnitely keeps me hopping and there is never a dull moment, but I like it that way,” Marty said. “While going through organizations promoting cattle and beef, I’ve learned how removed people are from where their food comes from. When I was growing up near Seattle, there were still dairy farms and chicken farms around us,” she said. “Those are long gone; the present generation is completely removed from farming and ranching. “My goal is to help promote agriculture and educate people about the various fallacies they hear, and explain what is good about agriculture,” she said.

awareness campaign called “Protect Our Pigs,” APHIS will support commercial pork producers, veterinarians, and pig owners with information and resources to help safeguard America’s swine population and the pork industry. African swine fever is a deadly, highly contagious viral disease that affects both domestic and wild pigs. It does not impact human health but quickly spreads between swine populations. People can also unknowingly spread the disease on their clothing, farming equipment, or by transporting uncooked pork products. African swine fever has never been detected in the U.S. but has recently been confirmed in countries as close as the Dominican Republic and Haiti. There is no treatment or effective vaccine for the disease. “African swine fever is already devastating pork industries and economies around the globe, and if detected in the U.S., it could ravage our swine population, nation’s pork industry, and farming communities,” said USDA Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Jenny Lester Moffitt.

The U.S. is one of the world’s largest pork producers and the second largest exporter of pork globally. If the disease arrives here, it is estimated it could cost the U.S. $50 billion dollars over 10 years. Commercial pork producers, veterinarians, and pig owners are among the nation’s first line of defense against African swine fever. There are more than 60,000 pork producers nationwide who employ more than half a million workers. An estimated 250,000 to 1 million potbellied pigs are kept as pets, and there are more than 1,500 swine veterinarians. APHIS is deploying a variety of outreach efforts to support these critical stakeholders. The new Protect Our Pigs website, aphis.usda.gov/ ProtectOurPigs, will house materials such as downloadable fact sheets and posters, instructional videos, shareable social media graphics, a new interactive biosecurity guide, and offer the latest disease updates. If African swine fever is detected in the U.S., APHIS will also be ready to respond immediately with actionable information and resources for pig owners and the public.

Mobile butchering business a family affair By HEATHER SMITH THOMAS For the Capital Press HOMEDALE, Idaho — Kortney Bahem and her husband, Daniel Lousignont, own and operate L&L Meats LLC, a mobile butchering business in Homedale, Idaho. Kortney grew up on a farm near Homedale and attended community college in Casper, Wyo., on a livestock judging scholarship. “I transferred to Colorado State University to finish my bachelor’s degree, and was on their judging teams for livestock and horses. I grew up with livestock and horses; they paid for my schooling,” Kortney said. She has two degrees, in animal science and equine science. “I also have a meat science minor and worked in the meat science lab at CSU,” she said. Immediately after graduation, she worked for a meat company in Colorado. “It was an office job, however, in the big city of Denver. So I moved home. I wanted to do more hands-on, on the processing,” Kortney said. “My dad had Daniel process a beef for them prior to my moving home, and told me I should talk to the new butcher because he might need some help! “When I moved back home, I met Daniel when he hired me to help in the butcher shop. The shop was

Kortney Bahem at work. started by Daniel’s father, and Daniel reopened it here in 2014,” said Kortney. “I always enjoyed butchering; my family butchered a few animals for themselves, and I helped with that as I was growing up,” she said. “I also loved to cook, and it all goes hand-in-hand. They have a fantastic meat science program at CSU. There’s a shortage of meat processors around the country, including local custom butchers, so she and her husband are busy. “All our butchering is mobile; slaughters are done at farms, then we take everything back to our shop to process,” she said. She and Daniel do all the kills and processing themselves and are booked a year ahead. “One reason we are booked so far ahead is that nearly every time we go to a customer’s place they want to schedule the same number of animals for next year,” Kortney said.

Last October, however, they took a couple of weeks to go to Sitkinak Island, Alaska, to cut meat for the Alaska Meat Co. “This will probably become an annual thing,” Kortney said. “After the new owners acquired the business, they approached us and we had several meetings with them through the spring and summer but we were too busy,” she said. “Then two of our customers had to cancel. They’d planned to sell meat and thought they’d have 25 head to butcher, between the two of them, scheduled for October, then told us they didn’t have those cattle,” Kortney said. It would have been easy to fill those spots and stay busy through October, but since the Alaska group had already asked, she said it looked like an opportunity for adventure. This remote island is off of the southern end of Kodiak Island. The meat company is

the only ranch on the island, which is grazed as a huge state lease. The partners own the cows and harvest a grassfed product from those cattle with a mobile processing unit. “The company sells whole beef and halves, cut and processed, some ground beef and quarters. Every year they put a crew together to go out there to harvest and process the meat,” Kortney said. She and Daniel enjoy helping young people learn about the meat business. “Every spring, we have half a dozen 4-H groups or FFA chapters come to our shop and we do processing demos. The last few years we’ve worked with the local FFA chapter and they put on a district FFA meat judging contest in our shop. We’ve hosted and helped with that

every spring,” Kortney said. “We hosted the District FFA meat contest again in May at our shop. One of the FFA advisors who helps put it on has had cattle on feed, and he set aside 5 for this contest. They were killed a couple days ahead and cooled out and the kids came Friday for the contest. We had a class of beef carcasses and a class of pig carcasses.” She and Daniel also raise show goats, and have about 60 Boer goats. “We got our first goats in early 2016; we show them and raise seed-stock to sell in production sales to other goat breeders. The goats have been a lot of fun. They are a lot more hands-on and fragile than cattle, but we really enjoy them.”

Hosting a party of 10 for a Fourth of July cookout cost between 11% to 17% more in 2022 than last year, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation and Wells Fargo. “The impacts to consumers are signiﬁcant,” said Roger Cryan, chief economist for the Farm Bureau. A similar survey from Wells Fargo, which analyzed popular Fourth of July food categories, showed an overall 11% cost increase. Higher food prices, however, don’t always mean higher farm proﬁts. “This is not a windfall for farmers and ranchers,” said Cryan, AFBF’s economist. Farmers generally receive a small portion of each dollar spent on food. According to USDA’s “food dollar series,” oﬀfarm costs including marketing, processing, wholesaling, distribution and retailing account for 84 cents of every food dollar spent in the U.S. About a decade ago, American farmers received 17.6 cents of every $1 consumers spent on food. By 2019, that had fallen to 14.6 cents. This June, a USDA statement said “just 14 cents of the food dollar go to producers on average.” For years, USDA’s Economic Research Service has tracked the share of retail food prices that farmers receive by comparing prices consumers paid for foods with prices farmers and ranchers received for commodities. Farm shares vary by com-

modity and ﬂuctuate year-toyear. Some commodities saw the farmers’ share shrink in 2021, according to USDA. The agency has not yet released complete 2022 data. Chips or potato salad are staples at many summer cookouts. Farmers in 2021 got 16% of the retail price of potatoes, down from the longtime average of 18%. Lemonade is another popular picnic item. Of every retail dollar spent on fresh lemons, farmers in 2021 received 18%, down from the 20% average. The farm share of each retail dollar spent on cheddar cheese was 29%, down from the 31% average. The dairy farmers’ share on a half-gallon of vanilla ice cream was 16%, 1% below average. Other commodities have seen the farmers’ share spike. In May of 2022, according to USDA, farmers received 41% of the price consumers paid at the store for beef, up from the last few years but under the six-year average of 42%. Pork producers received 26% of the retail price in May, up from the six-year average of 22%. But the food dollar is an imperfect indication of farm proﬁts, as it does not take into account farmers’ input costs. “The farmers’ share (data) is not necessarily super helpful to tell you whether farmers are making money, because it’s more important to them what the actual price is relative to their costs,” said William Hahn, agricultural economist for USDA. In 2022, farmers’ costs are high. According to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, farmers in April 2022 compared to April 2021 paid 29% more for livestock feed, 71% more for fertilizer, 16% more for chemicals, 62% more for fuel and 21% more for machinery. “Bottom line, in many cases, the higher prices farmers are being paid aren’t covering the increase in their farm expenses,” said Cryan, of the Farm Bureau.

FFA Foundation scholarship raﬄe sets record By BRAD CARLSON Capital Press

The Idaho FFA Foundation raised $130,200 at its 12th annual Scholarship Raffle June 17. “We are proud to say that this year’s program had record-breaking sales,” said Lauren DeVries, a foundation intern and former scholarship recipient. The scholarships provide financial support and allow for “meaningful connections to be made,” she said. “These FFA members are the future leaders of agriculture, and the Idaho FFA foundation is passionate about continuing to support and aid these incredible individuals.” Caldwell-area farmer Sid Freeman, who chairs the raffle, said it has been successful “and we’re always trying to make it better. We need to support agriculture education and FFA programs throughout the state as best we can because they are greatly needed for the future success of the agriculture industry in the state of Idaho.” The raffle’s offered a farm tractor as its grand prize the first nine years, followed by a compact tractor in the 10th, a nod to smaller farms and an increase in residential acreages. The grand prize the last two years was a side-by-side, ultra-terrain vehicle. “We’ve broadened our interest from the public,” Freeman said. “Tractors signify work. UTVs signify play.” FFA students this year sold 6,510 tickets, up 50.2% from 4,332 in 2021. Last year’s sales generated $86,640. The foundation for the 2020 raffle doubled the ticket price to $20. It also directed half of total sales to participating chapters and half to scholarships. This year’s raffle thus generated $65,100 each for scholarships and local chapters. Chapters use their share for expenses including event reg-

istration and travel. “A lot of people appreciate it,” Lorisa Pierson, foundation program and event manager, said of the revenue split. It enables buyers to support a local chapter as well as scholarships. The 2021-22 raffle cycle saw 48 chapters participate, more than 4,900 students overall. FFA as of April had 97 chapters, including two added recently, and about 5,600 members. DeVries said the raffle since its inception raised $641,751 from businesses and individuals. The total includes $475,660 from ticket sales, $157,555 from in-kind contributions from businesses and individuals and $128,650 in banner sponsorships from businesses. This year’s grand prize traveled about 6,000 miles to fairs, home and garden shows, sportsman shows, FFA chapter and alumni events, and sale days hosted by industry partners. Burks Tractor and Kubota donated an enclosed, graphic-wrapped trailer to haul it. Big D Ranch, south of Meridian, hosted this year’s raffle drawing. Grand prize: 2021 Can-Am Maverick side-by-side, ultra-terrain vehicle purchased from Dennis Dillon RV Marine Powersports. With custom sprayer donated by G&R Ag Products. Winner: Justin Place, Hamer. A series of online classes will oﬀer tips for emu ranchers. The course on the Zoom platform is oﬀered by the Cornell University Cooperative Extension Service in Ulster County, N.Y. Participants can ask questions, said Kymara Lonergan, a New York emu rancher and a member of the American Emu Association. Lonergan originally tried to get information about emus from USDA and cooperative extension services. “The USDA told me that emu were ‘exotic pets’ and I knew they were livestock,” she said. “I kept calling our local extension service and asking all kinds of questions, and at that time, they couldn’t answer them.” When Highly Pathogenic

to migrate again, Lonergan said. Lonergan has two emus, and delayed adding more due to concerns about the virus. She hopes to increase her flock to three breeding pairs in April 2023. Several emus were infected in the Pacific Northwest. Two were euthanized in Washington, state veterinarian Amber Itle told the Capital Press. “Emus are a susceptible species,” Itle said. “Keep them away from wild waterfowl.” One was “very sick” and “down” and the other one was exposed but not severely ill, Itle said. “In order to prevent further suffering, both birds were humanely euthanized,” she said. “Clinical signs were very sudden onset with healthy looking one day and down and extremely sick the next.” On an Oregon farm, two emus were infected, said Ryan Scholz, the state veterinarian. They were sedated and humanely euthanized, he said. “Because they are susceptible to influenza viruses, we are equally as concerned about ratites as any other species of domestic poultry,” Scholz said. “Following good biosecurity on the farm, and preventing contact between any species of domestic poultry and wild waterfowl is critical in preventing avian influenza — and several other diseases as well.” Rancher Janean Parker keeps 70 emus at 3 Feathers Emu Ranch in Chehalis, Wash., selling birds, chicks, eggs, meat and emu oil products. patterns, but “absolutely we’ve been concerned.” Parker participated as a panelist in the second “Emu Talk” episode. When she first entered the business in 2009, many fellow emu ranchers freely offered support and she wanted to continue the tradition, she said. “Emus are still such a fairly unknown agricultural endeavor,” she said. “The more we can raise them better, learn more about their physiology and get Cornell to do some research ... to the extent we can grow the body of knowledge collectively about emus, I think it helps the industry.” The first two classes covered “Emus 101” and emu chicks and eggs. Archived classes are available on the emu association website. Other experts are lined up to speak during future classes, Lonergan said. The first class drew 150 participants. The 2017 Ag Census lists 210 emu operations with sales, and more than 1,500 operations with inventory, estimating a total population of 11,535 emus in the U.S. The next sessions will cover emu respiratory systems and field research July 14 and emu products and a 12-point wellness check July 28. Lonergan is also developing “Radio Emu,” a series of informational sessions. Parker, the Washington rancher, suggests potential emu farmers talk to as many people in the industry as possible. “Emu have the needs of a livestock animal, and they live a long time,” Lonergan echoed. “It’s a really big commitment to make when you decide you want to have emu.” www.stocklandlivestock.com
