Rose Engine Lathe & Guilloché Jewelry
“Currently, Stewart Jones is one of a handful of elite Guillochéurs in the world using an original, hand-turned, rose engine preserved and used in the manner of Peter Karl Fabergé,” states jewelry researcher and valuator Leanne Parks of Greensboro, Georgia. “With a combination of modern and authentic period hand-held tools collected over a lifetime, Stewart Jones fervently preserves near-forgotten techniques of the great Master Jewelers by handfabricating jewelry in precious metals as was traditional at the early, great jewelry Houses of Frédéric Boucheron, Louis Francois Cartier, and Charles Lewis Tiffany Jones’ authentic, restored and fully functional Early to Mid-Victorian (Romantic to Grand Period) antique Swiss rose engine was manufactured circa 1860 in Le Locle, Switzerland by A. Uhlinger.
This machine is a rare find: as the twentieth century dawned, European wars and revolutions transformed many Master Jeweler workshops into factories. The few rose engines produced and used for jewelry were disassembled, destroyed or modified for industrial applications. Additionally, the skilled artisans of the day were drafted to military service and as time elapsed, their venerated artistry methods became nearly extinct.” Stewart Jones began his career as an architecture student at the University of Oregon in Eugene, switching to the metals department after five years. He’s brought his expertise in design and functionality to the process of creating jewelry that is both beautiful and wearable. Although Stewart works in all fine metals, he specializes in 18k gold and platinum.
In 1980, he won Honorable Mention for his gold and diamond belt buckle in the DeBeers Diamonds Today Awards USA. And in 1987, the Gold Information Center, New York presented him with a Certificate of Outstanding Design for a multi-layered gold pin design. The Culture Trip website recently designated Joseph, Oregon, one of The 10 Most Beautiful Towns in Oregon, and Stewart Jones one of The 8 Most Notable Artists. Stewart Jones Designs – jewelry studio & art gallery is open Friday & Saturday with other days and hours available by appointment. You are invited to stop by for demonstrations of the Swiss rose engine lathe.
Early in his career, Stewart Jones earned worldwide recognition as a first place winner for his domed, gold and diamond ring in the DeBeers Diamonds International Awards presented in Paris, France.

welcome
to wallowa county
Wallowa County isn’t a place that people just happen to stumble upon. It’s off the grid. At the end of the road. Some people come for the magnificence of Wallowa Lake or for the awesome glory of Mt. Joseph. Some come to escape while others come to discover. Its resources are abundant and its people are as engaging as they are kind. If you find that Wallowa County is your destination, whatever purpose inspires you, be sure to pause and contemplate all that this place has to offer. And come knowing two things. Come knowing that if you carry an open mind the unique and diverse spirit of Wallowa County will fulfill you. And equally important, come knowing that you are very welcome.

82 things to do
in wallowa county
T
here are plenty of one-day or weekend special events in Wallowa County during Spring, Summer, and Fall. But suppose you have gone to the car show, air show, rodeo, or other event. Then what? Here’s a list of 82 things to do in Wallowa County. None are scheduled events. You can do these anytime. Some require a drive, others are right in town. All of them are enjoyable, useful and/or educational. The number 82 is inspired by Highway 82—the state thoroughfare that connects us with the outside world. But there are many other roads less traveled to explore—Highway 3 that goes to Flora and Rattlesnake Grade; Highway 350 that leads to Imnaha and adventures beyond. Forest Service roads to trailheads. And the trails themselves. We hope you enjoy your time here, whether you are a visitor or resident, and we hope this list introduces you to some new and wondrous discoveries. Tramway at Wallowa Lake From 4200 ft to 8200 feet elevation in about 10 minutes, with awesome views of Wallowa Lake. ELLEN MORRIS BISHOP PHOTO
AT THE LAKE
1
Tramway Trip
Want to get into the High Wallowas the easy way? Take a ride up the tramway at the south end Wallowa Lake. You’ll be whisked from 4200 ft to 8200 feet elevation in about 10 minutes, with an awesome view of Wallowa Lake along the way. Once atop Mount Howard you can walk the trails, feed cute ground squirrels, and dine at the tramway’s bistro. Take a jacket though—it can be windy and chilly at 8200 feet!
2
Paraglide
For the ultimate tramway experience, consider returning to the ground by paragliding. Todd Weigand has been giving rides to aspiring new paragliders since 1996. Weigand, a seasoned expert who has paraglided from Mt. Howard across Hells Canyon, offers 10-15 minute rides that soar from the north slope of Mount Howard to a landing near Wallowa Lake Lodge. To arrange the flight of a lifetime, contact him through his website, www.flythewallowas.com
3
Horseback Ride
You can also explore the high Wallowas on horseback. Wallowa Lake Pack Station offers daily rides to Aneroid Lake and back so you don’t have to hoof it yourself. If you arrange it ahead of time, they’ll also pack you and your camping gear into the Lakes Basin and pack you back out again whenever you wish.
4
Bumper Boats
Bumper cars are fun, but bumper boats are even better on a hot summer afternoon. Joe’s Place at Wallowa Lake Village provides an opportunity for kids and their parents to have some fun or, as their website says, “go crazy.”
5
Rent a Paddle Boat, Kayak, etc.
Have a hankering to get out on the lake? No need to be a landlubber. You can rent a paddle-boat, kayak, or a paddle board at the Wallowa Lake Marina.
6

Park at the north end of the lake, where you get the Wallowa Mountains in the background. Foreground is important, so try to get the lakeshore’s waves, flowers, or rocks along the beach in the picture as well as the lake.
7
Wallowa Lake Ranger Talk
Wallowa Lake State Park offers presentations about history, wildlife, and local plants and animals free and frequently. Check out their schedule, and learn more about this incredible landscape.
8
Hike Iwetemlaykin
“Iwetemlaykin” is Nez Perce for “Place by the Lake.” This State Natural Reserve was a camping site for the Nez Perce in late summer and early fall when they harvested the plentiful runs of Sockeye salmon that returned to the lake each year. Trails lead from parking area to Pete’s Pond and beyond. If you walk quietly, you may spot a deer or other wildlife. This site is part of the Terminal Moraine, and the ridge tops are sprinkled with large glacial erratic boulders. More on page 13

Mini-Golf
The Village at Wallowa Lake is the St. Andrews or maybe Augusta National of mini-golf courses. There are three nicely astro-turfed courses: Eagle Cap Chalets, Joe’s Place, and the Alpine House, each with its own challenges.
10
Fish
Wallowa Lake has produced world-record kokanee and gigantic mackinaw (lake trout). You needn’t hook a record fish to have fun, or a good meal. Rent fishing gear and boats at the Wallowa Lake Marina. Be sure you have a current Oregon fishing license. Don’t have a boat? You can rent one at the marina at Wallowa Lake State Park, or engage a local fishing guide.
11
Go-Karts
If quiet pursuits like fishing are not your cup of tea, maybe go-carts are a better choice for your youngsters. Wallowa Lake Village has a go-kart track right next to the horse stable. (What could possibly go wrong?)
12
Try Thai Food
The Thai Food Cart, Khao Neaow. Plunked next to the go carts you’ll find a food cart that serves very good, freshly made, authentic Thai food. There’s a picnic table or two for eating. And the go-carts for entertainment.
13
Birdwatch
Wallowa Lake and the Wallowa Lake State Park are great places to bird-watch. Look for water ouzels and spotted sandpipers along the river, osprey, eagles, mergansers, and other birds along the lakefront.

14
IN & AROUND JOSEPH
Listen
Listen to the river, the wind, and the birds. Sometimes getting away from it all means getting away from it all. Find a quiet spot along the river or in the forest, and just sit and listen. Inhale and take in forest smells. Try to ID birds by their songs and sight. How many different natural sounds can you hear?
15
Swim
Both ends of Wallowa Lake offer safe swimming areas: Wallowa Lake State Park on the south and the Wallowa County Park on the north, just outside Joseph. Keep in mind that the lake water comes from mountain rivers and it tends to be cold.
16
Old Chief Joseph’s Grave
Pay your respects at Old Chief Joseph’s grave: The father of Chief Joseph, of Nez Perce War repute, was named Tuekakas, and also known as Old Joseph. He passed away in 1872, and his remains are interred at the burial site on the northwest side of the lake. There’s a parking pullout, an interpretive sign, and a short trail that leads to his grave. Traditionally, Nez Perce and other visitors leave a small gift to remind his spirit of the Wallowas, or provide comfort in his after-life.
17
Historical Marker
Stop and read the restored classical Wallowa Lake Historical Marker. Just past the Wallowa County Park at the north end of Wallowa Lake there’s a pull-out with a brand-new version of an historic marker. It provides updated information about Wallowa Lake and its moraines, and it’s worth stopping to read and ponder the landscape.
18
Tour the Bronze Statues
Downtown Joseph has 18 iconic bronze statues that represent everything from wildlife to buckaroos to western ladies and Nez Perce Indians. You can start at the Josephy Center at the south end of town and back to take them all in.
19
Tour a Bronze Foundry
Valley Bronze. The Valley Bronze Foundry on Aspen Street in Joseph offers tours daily. You’ll learn the exacting process through which world-class bronze sculptures are made. Learn more and reserve your place on a tour at the Valley Bronze Gallery at 18 South Main Street, Joseph. 541 432-7445
20
Shop Joseph’s unique stores
It’s why most people come to Joseph. You can find almost anything here. Favorites include Joseph Hardware (AKA: JoHard)—a store that has everything from refrigerators to rubberbands, along with everything you could wish for in a classical hardware store. As you stroll Main Street look for The Dog Spot for high end, fun, pet supplies, Copper Creek for books, games and treats for everyone in the family, Tempting Teal for trendy clothing, Mad Mary’s for everything eclectic and wonderful, Anton’s for highend kitchenware and awesome hats, and bee crow bee, which will lure you in with irresistible scents. Also check out the unique stores at the Josephy Center, Wallowology, and the Wallowa County Museum. More on page 16

Pedal the Rails with Rail-Rider
Yes, those are railroad tracks that run through Enterprise, Joseph, Wallowa and along the river to Minam and beyond. At the present, conventional trains don’t use them. But you can ride the rails more silently via the Joseph Branch Railriders. Founded in 2015, the Railriders are ingenious small pedal-cars (sort of overgrown recumbent bicycles) that one or two passengers pedal along the rails. Trips start at Joseph, travel 6 miles to Enterprise, and pedal back. Along the way you will see wildlife, and have an astounding view of the Wallowa Mountains. The round-trip takes about 2 hours, and you’ll be accompanied by a guide. Reservations are essential, as the trips, which run 3 times per day from May 18-October 6, are popular. jbrailriders.com (541)-786-6149. More on page 19

The Joseph Fly Shoppe, 203A North Main Street, Joseph, (541) 432-4343, josephflyshoppe.com is the go-to place for conversations and tips about fish and fishing, as well as Orvis and other great gear. Their website provides a wealth of information, too. But sharing your passion with owner Rob Lamb is always time well spent. The Sports Corral, just to the north at 401 North Main Street, Joseph, (541) 432-4363, sportscorral.com also stocks fishing gear and a wide variety of other sporting and western gear, including clothing. They are also the go-to dealer of firearms and ammo in Wallowa County.

Hike the Hurricane Creek Trail
One of the best hikes in the Wallowas is also one of the most easily accessible. Hurricane Creek Road (USFS Road 8205) dead-ends at the trailhead. Most hikers stroll the relatively easy 3 miles to Slick Rock and the waterfall that tumbles over a marble and basalt cliff, and then stroll back to the trailhead for a total 6 mile hike. You get nice views of the alpine splendor of Sacajawea and the Hurricane Divide along the way. If you follow the entire 12 mile length of the Hurricane Creek Trail, you’ll find yourself in the Lakes Basin. Be sure you have a USFS or other Federal pass for trailhead parking. You’ll have to fill out a wilderness permit at the trailhead as well.
33
Explore Oregon’s Highest Lake
Want more than just a hike? Turn off the Hurricane Creek Trail about ¼ mile from the trailhead onto the Falls Creek Trail (1807A) and challenge yourself on the ascent to Legore Lake, the highest lake in Oregon at 8,950 feet. The trail is rugged and rises 4,000 feet in its 4 miles, passing the old, very defunct Legore Mine along the way. But your reward will be extraordinary scenery and just maybe a close encounter with the Wallowa’s mountain goats or bighorn sheep once you get into the nosebleed section. The good news: Even if you don’t make it all the way to Legore Lake you’ll have great views along the way.
34
Camp at Hurricane Creek
This small, cool (in so many ways!) campground along Hurricane Creek is the polar opposite of Wallowa Lake Park. Pit toilets, no crowds, no Camp Host, no reservations, and only 8 campsites. It’s a quiet respite from the rest of the world if you are lucky enough to find an open site! Open June 15-October 31. From Joseph, drive west on Airport Road to Hurricane Creek Road. The campground is about four miles up the road at the USFS boundary.
35
Raft Hells Canyon!
Hanker for real adventure? Sign up for a raft trip through Hells Canyon and its class 4 to 5 rapids, with Winding Waters River Expeditions, 204 East Wallowa Avenue, Joseph. 541-886-5078. Windingwatersrafting.com Locally grown produce and meats grace their tables, the food and service are outstanding and the guides are experts at safely navigating even the most daunting white water.
36

Joseph is replete with massage therapists, and related professionals. Try Exhale Day Spa on the north end of town for a complete make-over, or other therapists including Bloom Massage (jospephbloommassage.com 601B N Main St. 541 3980159), and Art of Massage (9 N Main St, 541-624-2000).

Get a new ‘do

In Joseph, try Serenity Salon 541-432-1010 on Main Street. In Enterprise, great places for new do’s include Belle Salon, 117 E Main Street (541-4262323) where you can also have a manicure and/or pedicure, and Zel’s Beauty Bar, 108 W. Go Antiquing
Enterprise offers a first-class antique store: Favorite Finds on Main at 300 West Main Street. Owner Sondra Lozier will be happy to help you explore her extensive offerings to find just what you are looking for or even something you are not looking for. If you are in town on Monday or Tuesday, stop by the Soroptimists Thrift Store in the basement of the historic Odd Fellows Hall on NW 1st Street, next to the Enterprise Library. It’s an adventure, but their store includes a silent auction rack where the very best of their donated finds, which are often rare, valuable, and bona fide antiques, can be found. They also have a great selection of used books for sale. Most items (except auction items) are between $0.25 and $2.00, and proceeds go to support education and other worthy community causes. You might also search for treasures at Second Best, a thrift store where some of Grandma’s furnishings and do-dads may be up for sale, at 304 W Greenwood Street, Enterprise. (541) 426-4605.

It’s a scenic pond on the outskirts of Enterprise that offers fishing for stocked trout. There are also trails to walk if you are not into fishing. A former log-pond and a long-vanished mill, Marr Pond is now a small ecological refuge that’s easy to get to and a great place to introduce kids and adults to the fun of fishing. To get to Marr Pond,

allowa County is all about the out-of-doors. Whether your visit lasts mere hours or you are camping for days, Wallowa Lake’s beauty alone will reward you. So take a picnic, catch a fish, go for a hike, shoot scenic photos or just lay around doing nothing. Whether you seek solitude or something for your group to do, you’ll find it here!
Other Things There’s a huge diversity of other things to do outside. They include: • Cycling • Winter Skiing and Snowboarding • Horseback Riding • Photographing
Hiking Always a favorite. Of course, the most easily accessible trails bear the most traffic. Try the trails less traveled to find solitude. For a comprehensive guide purchase one of the published Hiking Guides. Fred Barstad’s Hiking Oregon’s Eagle Cap Wilderness is outstanding, and written by a local. Take a (paper) map, too.
Water Sports It’s summer. It’s hot. Water is good. Here are some suggestions: • Swim • Kayak • Fish

July 23-28, 2019
he Chief Joseph Days Rodeo ranks among Wallowa County’s premier summer events. With two parades, four days of western action, street vendors with quality art, food, and western regalia, and the Nez Perce Friendship Feast, there is something for everyone.
Always the last weekend in July, this year the July 2328 event marks the 74th year of Chief Joseph Days. A Bucking Horse Stampede
down Main Street in Joseph kicks off the rodeo at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, July 23. The horses start at the south end of town, and trot to the

rodeo grounds under the guidance of horseback buckaroos. It’s a popular event to watch, and gives you a close-up look at the power and size of today’s well-bred bucking horses. If you’d like to watch PRCA Rodeo for free, you are welcome to attend the Rodeo Slack events in the Harley Tucker Arena beginning at 2 PM on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday (starting at 2:30). Rodeo Slack is a series of runs in timed events — steer wrestling, steer roping, tiedown roping, team roping and barrel racing — that are held in the afternoon because the entries in each
event far outnumber the available spots. Both rodeo stars and newcomers participate in slack. The events are the same, with fewer spectators, a more informal, relaxed atmosphere, and the price is right. The evening PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) Rodeo begins at 7 PM Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Wednesday is family night. Thursday is “Are You Tough Enough to Wear Pink” night—a benefit for local breast cancer screening. Pink shirts, hats, and boots are everywhere. Join in and wear pink!

The evening rodeo events begin with an entry by Nez Perce riders, the Tuckerettes riding team, Chief Joseph Days Rodeo Court, and rodeo royalty from across the northwest. Competitive events begin with saddle bronc riding, and proceed through team roping, bareback riding, tiedown roping, mini-bull riding, and barrel racing before getting to the climax event: bull riding. World champion bulls and bull riders meet here to test one-another in a thrilling and dangerous event. Along with bull–riders, world class bull-fighters are there, putting their lives on the line to ensure the safety of riders. On family night you’ll be treated to mutton busting—local youngsters trying to hang onto a sheep for as long as possible. Thursday features wild cow milking, in which local buckaroos have to rope, and then milk, a very uncooperative cow. The specialty acts are at their best on Friday and Saturday night, and recently have included five-time National Finals
Page 37
Rodeo performer Madison MacDonald’s trick riding show (2018), and Whiplash the Cowboy Monkey (2017). Parades and special events are part of the celebration. Friday there’s the Kid’s Parade down Main
Street at 10 AM. Saturday, the official parade heads down Main Street, featuring Nez Perce tribal members and their horses, rodeo cowboys, local ranches, antique cars, fire departments, and almost everything else in Wallowa County. Bring a chair, because the parade can last for more than an hour. At noon on Saturday, Nez Perce tribal members host the Friendship Feast at the Encampment Pavilion just east of the Harley Tucker Arena. It’s a potluck salmon dinner. The community provides salads, veggies, and desserts. The Nez Perce
cook salmon in their traditional manner. There are Nez Perce prayers, and the meal follows tribal traditions. It’s a perfect place to learn more about the people who have lived in the Wallowa Valley since time immemorial. About 100 vendors fill side streets in Joseph on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Many are artisans who offer finely-crafted wares, from saddles and other horse gear to art and clothing. Foods run the gamut of traditional shaved ice, hot dogs, funnel cakes and fry bread, to more gourmet offerings.
There’s something for everyone at Chief Joseph Days! See you there! Wallowa.com • WALLOWA COUNTY VISITOR GUIDE 2019 • 37

ith its spectacular beauty and end-of-the-road isolation, it’s no wonder Wallowa County attracts artists and creative people of every kind. Or folks already living here are inspired to become artists, musicians or writers. Wallowa County’s thriving arts community includes an arts council, bronze foundries and galleries, musical organizations and events, a community theater group, a literary nonprofit, a cultural center and more. Joseph, and increasingly, Enterprise are home to many fine art galleries that feature the world-class work of local and regional artists. Visit our galleries, tour a foundry, or take an art or photography class! We’ve all seen and admired the bronze statuary that lines Joseph’s streets. The foundries that made them were foundational to the arts communities here. Bronze statuary made by Valley Bronze and Parks Bronze have been installed around the world, including the frames that hold the US Bill of Rights, Constitution, and Bill of Rights in the Rotunda of the national archives in Washington DC and a huge, 30-foot long, 12-foot high, seven ton memorial at the site of the Berlin Wall, in Germany. Parks Bronze recently finished a life-sized, 25-foot
long humpback whale now in Juneau, Alaska. Once you’ve visited all the galleries and done a foundry tour or two, why not try your own hand at art, too! Here are a couple of places that offer classes and trips to polish your skills or develop new ones. • Learn to blow glass and make your own glass art. o, we don’t have a Starbucks. Wallowa County doesn’t have stoplights, either. These coffee shops are locally owned. Each is unique with it’s own atmosphere. See the Wallowas by Air
Joe Spence, one of the best bush pilots in the West, offers flights over the Wallowas and/or Hells Canyon. He can even land you and your camp in some very beautiful, remote locations and return to fly you out. Contact Spence Air Services, 541-426-3288.

Hike Zumwalt Prairie Preserve
The Nature Conservancy’s Zumwalt Prairie Preserve is about 15 miles north of Enterprise on Zumwalt Road. In late May and early to mid-June, wildflowers abound. The Conservancy’s 33,000 acre preserve occupies some of the best native grassland in Oregon. There are several trails that offer access. They include the Harsin Butte Trail that leads to the top of a small, long extinct shield volcano, with an awe-inspiring view of the Wallowa and Seven Devils Mountains. The Horned Lark Trail explores grassland and a stream valley. Keep an eye out for elk, fox, coyotes, hawks, eagles, and other wildlife. Also for cows, as the preserve is grazed. No dogs are allowed on the trails, or on the preserve. (Unlike cows, they might disturb wildlife and habitat…..) You can pick up a map of the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve at The Nature Conservancy’s Enterprise office at 906 S River Street, (541) 426-3458. You can also get directions and download maps at the TNC Zumwalt Prairie Preserve website.

Visit Buckhorn Overlook
(Note: If you contemplate visiting Buckhorn, and/or Red Hill, be sure your gas tank is full when you leave Enterprise!!) To find Buckhorn, continue beyond the TNC Zumwalt Prairie Preserve, in about 25 miles you’ll enter US Forest Service public lands. The road designation changes to USFS Road 46. In another 8 miles or so you’ll see a sign for Buckhorn Overlook. Turn right down the small side road (USFS 780) and follow signs about a mile to the overlook. There’s an aging Forest Service lookout shelter, but more importantly, Buckhorn lets you look into the depths of the Imnaha River Canyon (a slightly-smaller version of Hells Canyon) and into Idaho beyond. You can see the 7 Devils, and on clear days, as far as the Sawtooths in central Idaho. It’s truly a jaw-dropping vista that reveals the incredible extent of the Columbia River basalt lava flows that covered eastern Oregon, eastern Washington and much of Idaho about 15 million years ago.
56
Visit the Fire Tower at Red Hill
From Buckhorn, continue north on USFS 46, and continue for another 20 miles. The road winds, and eventually turns more south and west. You’ll see a red cinder-cone on the left with a lookout nearby. The fire tower is no longer active, but it’s a great place to visit. To return to civilization, continue on USFS

Nez Perce Interpretive Center
Visit the Wallowa Band Nez Perce Interpretive Center. 209 E. Second Street, Wallowa. (541) 886-3101. The band of Nez Perce Indians that Chief Joseph led in their epic retreat towards freedom in Canada is the Wallowa Band . Today, these Nez Perce are exiled to a reservation in northern Washington. But their home is here in Wallowa County, and in particular, the area now occupied by the town of Wallowa. The non-profit Homeland Project works with the Wallowa Band Nez Perce to provide an interpretive center here. Interactive displays tell the story of the band’s lives in the Wallowas, and the saga of their retreat and battles in the war of 1877. Call ahead for the centers hours.
58
Hike the Homeland Project Trail
Hike the Homeland Project trail to the top of Tick Hill. As you enter the town of Wallowa, turn sharply right onto Whiskey Creek Road. In about one-half mile you’ll find the entry way to the Nez Perce Homeland. Drive along the gravel road about ¼ mile to the

base of steep basalt cliffs, park, and begin your hike along the broad trail to the northeast. It will lead you to the top of the hill with a rewarding view, and interpretive signs along the way.
59
Tamkaliks Pedestrian Bridge
Explore the Tamkaliks pedestrian bridge. At the end of South Pine St. in Wallowa, a new—but historic—bridge crosses the Wallowa River. It leads to the Homeland Project’s Tamkaliks dance arbor and the rest of the 320-acre Nez Perce Homeland site, and is part of the Homeland Interpretive Project. Along the way you’ll find interpretive signs that explain salmon, lamprey, and Nez Perce history and customs.
60
Visit Tamkaliks
Shop the Tamkaliks community-wide garage sale. The Tamkaliks gathering is a weekend of Native American dances held each year on the third weekend in July—the weekend before Chief Joseph Days. It’s free, and you’ll learn about and meet the Nez Perce of the Joseph Band. The good people of Wallowa also have all their summer garage sales that weekend, so if you are a bargain-hunter, you might find a treasure.
61
New Wallowa History Center
Visit the new Wallowa History Center.
What had been a dilapidated, decaying and deserted US Forest Service station on the west end of Wallowa has been rejuvenated, revamped, and reborn as a showcase for the history of the lower Wallowa Valley, from logging to grazing to railroading. A new interpretive center is in the works, and may be open or partly open this summer.
62
Go Antiquing
Like the Soroptimist’s store in Enterprise, Wallowa’s thrift store earns money for a good cause—mostly scholarships for local students. You can find almost anything here, including furniture, tools, and decorative items donated by local residents when cleaning out Grandma’s house.
63
Hike the Bear Creek Trail
Hike the Bear Creek Trail to Standley Guard Station. One of the easiest and most scenic hikes in the Wallowas requires an adventurous drive to reach the trailhead, but rises relatively gently—only 1200 feet— in 4.8 miles. To find the Bear Creek trailhead, turn south off Or Hwy 82 1 mile east of Minam, on Big Canyon Road (USFS 8270. In 10 miles, turn left on USFS 050 and continue 7 miles to the trailhead.
64
Try a Huckleberry Milkshake
Try a famous huckleberry milkshake. It might look like just an ordinary small red hamburger stand at the west end of
Wallowa. But to everyone who lives here, Little Bear Drive-In is Milkshake Nirvana. Huckleberry is a summer staple. You can also order a local, grass-fed beef hamburger, raised with care just down the road at Carman Ranch. The other places you can get Carman Ranch beef are highend restaurants in Portland. Little Bear also offers the three-patty King Burger, which holds a lot of us for two, and possibly three, meals.
65
Try a Green-Bean Espresso
Is that regular three-shot latte not quite enough to wake you up? Head over to the Blonde Strawberry and ask for a latte made with green (minimally-roasted) coffee beans. They pack a high-caffeine punch. But you won’t get ‘em unless you ask.
66
Hike to Maxwell Lake
Want to do a day-hike into alpine splendor, and avoid the crowds? Head for Maxwell Lake. The trailhead is ALMOST at the end of the Lostine River Road. The four-mile trail is a gentle ascent for half its distance, and a pretty steep scramble for the second half, but the small cloistered and scenic lake and the unfettered vistas of the Lostine River canyon are worth all the hard breathing. Drop-Camp in the Lakes Basin
If you make arrangements ahead of time, you can have a packer haul your camping gear into the Lakes Basin (or anywhere in the Wallowas, for that matter) and save yourself and your companions the effort of backpacking everything yourself. Packers can also give you a horseback ride in, and can pack you and your gear back out at a pre-arranged date. Local packers who provide this service from the Two Pan trailhead at the end of the Lostine River Road include Del Sol Wilderness Adventures (541) 398-2088 delsolwildernessadventures.com and Wallowa Mountain Outfitters (503) 750-2913 wallowamountainpackers.com.

Go Glamping at RimRock Inn
Want to go camping, but you’re not so happy about the tent and sleeping pad thing and sitting on a mossy log? Try “glamping” (glamorous camping) in a nice, clean, cozy teepee, complete with an actual bed, chairs, a rug and electric lights. The RimRock Inn, just shy of Flora on the North Highway (OR Hwy 3) offers accommodations in teepees and also vintage trailers, with awe-inspiring views of Joseph Canyon out the front door. They also have a great restaurant and bar, and if you prefer, a luxury room to rent in their lodge.
69
Joseph Canyon Overlook
There’s one more stunning canyon in Wallowa County: the canyon of Joseph Creek. Not as renowned as Hells Canyon or the Imnaha, Joseph Canyon is part of the Nez Perce homeland and harbors the cave where Chief Joseph was born. There’s a USFS viewpoint on OR Hwy 3 where you can marvel at this rugged, 4,500-foot deep canyon and also learn about Nez Perce history.
70
Check Out Boggans’ Oasis
Try a milkshake –or raft trip—at Boggans’ Oasis. If you drive the North Highway down Buford Grade’s winding road, you’ll find Boggan’s Oasis at the bottom. Perched on the banks of the Grande Ronde River, Boggans makes legendary milkshakes, rents rafts, sells fishing gear, and offers trailer and camping sites along the river. You’ll also find restroom facilities in the camping/launch area on the right near the river.
71
Tackle the Redmond Grade
Visit Troy and tackle the Redmond Grade. Troy, Oregon is a very small town that also has a tavern, restaurant and store, and its

very own Shiloh Inn. You can find it just after you cross the Grande Ronde River and hang an immediate left on Grande Ronde River Road. The drive to Troy is scenic and mostly paved until you get back into Oregon, at which point it changes to gravel. To return to civilization, try the Redmond Grade—the road crosses the river, winds upward, and leads to Flora. Great views along the way.
72
Flora School
Whether you arrive in Flora via the Redmond Grade (see above) or via the main road off Oregon Highway 3, the Flora School is worth looking at. It’s open on Flora School Day in late May (a fundraiser for school restoration) This giant, partly restored building in the middle of a tiny town is astonishing. The school opened in 1912 when the town bloomed, and closed in 1960, as the area’s population withered. Flora is now being pioneered by new settlers, and Flora School may live again.
THE SALT CREEK SUMMIT ROAD AND IMNAHA
73
Hike the Tenderfoot Trail
Tenderfoot Trail (USFS Trail 1819) is perhaps the easiest hike into the Wallowa’s alpine splendor. Drive the Imnaha Highway to
USFS 39, and take USFS Road 39 about 14 miles to USFS 100—a road that darts up a drainage to the right. At the end of that road, the trail starts. Its grade is easy and in about 5 miles of hiking you’ll find yourself in alpine basins surrounded by craggy peaks. Take a good trail map with you—there are many trails and old sheepherder roads that explore this eastern side of the Wallowas.
74
Camp at Imnaha River
Continue along USFS 39 and you’ll find the upper Imnaha River running through old growth ponderosa pines. There are several USFS campgrounds along the river here. All are pretty basic, but the river is lovely, the pines are magnificent, and the fish are usually biting.
75
Hike to Blue Hole
Along USFS Road 39 you’ll also find a side road, 3960 that leads to a trailhead known as Indian Crossing. From there, USFS Trail 1816 follows the Imnaha River upstream. Part of the hike is through an old, 1993 fire known as the Twin Lakes Burn. Blue Hole is two miles up the trail—a blue pool in the river, surrounded by sheer rock walls. IF you continue past Blue Hole, the trail will take you deep into the Wallowas, following the Imnaha to its headwaters at Hawkins Pass about 20 miles away. More on page 65

Visit Hells Canyon Overlook
Located about 45 miles from Enterprise just off USFS Road 39, Hells Canyon Overlook offers a glimpse of Hells Canyon from above. There are interpretive signs and wildflowers galore at the USFS site, and the view is worth the drive. To reach this spot, continue about 4 miles past Ollokot Campground and Imnaha River on USFS Road 3965 and turn left on USFS which is marked for Hells Canyon Overlook.
77
Historic Imnaha Store & Tavern
Put a dollar bill on the ceiling at the historic Imnaha Store & Tavern. Follow Highway 350 (the Imnaha Highway) 26 miles to the town of Imnaha—a gateway to more adventure. Stop at the historic Imnaha Tavern, the oldest continuously-operated business in Wallowa County. It’s said that you can purchase (frozen) rattlesnake and bear meat there You can also get a great tavern meal, and while you’re there participate in a long tradition of leaving a dollar bill on the ceiling. They’ll explain how.
78
Visit Hat Point
It’s a long and winding (and narrow and gravel) 24-mile road to Hat Point, the highest spot on the Oregon side of Hells Canyon. But it’s worth it. Lots of spectacular views along the way (Five Mile, Granny View, and others) a world-class view into the deepest canyon in North America, an active USFS lookout tower you can visit, and if you walk the canyon rim a bit, a possible encounter with big, white mountain goats.

79
Imnaha Trail (and Poison Ivy)
Drive north from Imnaha to the end of the pavement on the Imnaha River Road for a feeling of the Imnaha River Canyon. The road continues beyond the pavement, too. It’s narrow, cliff-bound in places, and can be muddy and slippery in the spring and after rains. Don’t try this in your Camry or other passenger car. Make sure you have plenty of fuel before leaving the pavement. Drive 25 miles through the Imnaha River’s deep
and majestic canyon to the trailhead. Hells Canyon and the ruins of mines at Eureka Bar are just 4.5 miles down the trail. Beware of poison ivy along the way.
80
Explore Dug Bar
For those with a yen for adventure, you can continue beyond the lower Imnaha River Trail to Dug Bar in Hells Canyon , where Chief Joseph’s band crossed the floodswollen Snake River in 1877.
