THE ROLE OF PACKAGING IN THE MARKET OF COSMETICS Philip Kotler, the famous marketing writer, a part from the already existing four “P’s”, refers to packaging as the fifth one(Product, Price, Place, Promotion&Packaging).

Packaging is considered as one of the factors that can affect consumers, since it is the first impression they get for the product when they see or touch it. It is also characterized as a “silent salesperson”. J. Peters, B. Higgins & M. Richmond in their book “Creating Value Through Packaging” mention that there are four crusial moments in consumers’ interaction with the product and packaging, and these are the “Moments of Truth”.

The Zero Moment: exists before the visit to a store or an online shop. The First Moment: occurs when the consumer finds the packaging on the self or an electronic version in an online store. The Second Moment: takes place when the consumer uses the product, while The Fourth Moment: comes after the consumer uses the product and packaging, evaluates its experience and decides to repurchase the product.

On the opposite side of the theory, which supports the opinion that packaging affects consumers’ final decision, there is the view that “you should not judge a book by its cover”! Never the less, researches abroad in the field of cosmetics, taking women as a sample (since primarily they are the target audience of these companies), have shown that packaging has an important effect to many final consumers. The colors, the printing, the texture, the shape and finally the good over all quality of each product are issues evaluated by the final customer and give the “glamour” each company wants to attribute to its products. Taking into consideration all the above aspects, many companies support packaging as one of the marketing tools in the promotion of their products. They invest time and money for the development and finally the production of the most suitable packaging.

ARGO, having years of experience in the field of packaging, has among its clientele key companies-producers in the field of cosmetics. The experience of our people helps customers choose the most appropriate packaging for their product.

From the simplest to the most complicated artwork, ARGO has the experience and the means to satisfy the demand of every company and product. Different volumes from 5ml to 250ml, in white or colored tubes, and caps in different types and colors, we offer our customers the desired final result. It is not by chance that many of the most succesfull as well as emerging companies in Greece and abroad, collaborate with ARGO for the production of their tubes.

A part from ARGO’s standard product series in bottles, our customers have the opportunity with the help of the R&D and Sales Department, to design a customized packaging solution. Major cosmetic companies, multinational and national, in Greece and abroad, trust ARGO for the development of the packaging, which fits the philosophy of their product. The high standards of the plastic tubes produced in Argo and the experience of our printing team, give us the competivive edge to provide our customers, with the result they envision when they start the development of their product.

For the supporters or not of the role of packaging in the development of a successful product, it is a common concession that every product is recognized by its packaging.

NEW flip-top cap for the APIVITA bottles APIVITA is a highly sophisticated natural cosmetics brand, developing and producing natural, effective and holistic cosmetics and well-being products and services that nurture and revitalize body, mind and soul. Since 1979 the Greek company has developed a unique philosophy, every product to combine three basic principles: Natural, Effective and Holistic. APIVITA cosmetics contain naturally derived active ingredients, extracts from plants of the Greek nature, beehive products of high nutritional value, and organic essential oils.

The company strongly believes that society, people and culture are elements belonging to the same equation along with the environment, the planet and natural resources. As part of this belief, the company strives to reduce the environmental impacts of its products. Regarding product packaging, Apivita minimizes as far as possible the materials used for packaging and promotion, while recycled or environmentally certified materials are selected for every new product. All of these elements have been taken into account for the development of the new flip top cap of Apivita’s iconic bottle. A new design has been created in collaboration with Argo, succeeding an 8% plastic reduction in weight. The material is recyclable PP while the bottle is made of recycled PET and they are both used for the different ranges of Shower gels, Shampoos, Intimate gels and Baby & Kid’s products of the brand. UN Certification at Argo

The main target for a package of dangerous goods is to prevent any leakage throughout the products life. To achieve this, packages with enhanced mechanical properties need to be used, assuring the safety of everyone involved in the products supply chain.

The “United Nations (UN) Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods is the most authoritative framework regulation regarding the packaging and transportation of dangerous goods. It classifies substances in Packing Groups based on how dangerous a substance is and provides standards of performance that a package must meet per Packing Group. The UN certification process consists of a number of performance oriented tests related to packaging integrity which are severe enough to assure its performance even in hard transportation and storage conditions.

08

A UN package that has been certified by an accredited third-party for the transportation of dangerous goods bears the relevant UN mark which indicates several characteristics of the packaging, including the material that it has been produced from, the packing group of substances that is has been tested for, the test levels that the packaging has successfully passed, the certification authority and the packaging producer. Every responsible packaging producer needs to systematically verify that the production specifications and quality characteristics of a UN marked package are always met. ARGO is continuously expanding the family of UN certified packages to meet new customer needs. Currently, it includes 1 l nominal volume bottles (HDPE, PET and CoEx) and jerricans (5l HDPE/CoEx and 10l HDPE). Furthermore, for customized products, if agreed with the costumer, Argo can proceed with a UN certification.

Without measurement there is no control

Quality Control of the vials produced in the ISO7 Cleanroom and intended for ophthalmic solutions (TE010, TE020 & TE030 series), has been substantially enhanced with the introduction of the particulate matter determination per released batch (particles diameter 10Îźm & 25Îźm). The test is performed according to USP <789> (light obscuration test). ARGO, continuously committed to product quality and safety, invested in the installation of an automated system (APSS-2000, PMS) consisting of a syringe sampler, a light obscuration spectrometer and the operating software. This calibrated system was installed in the recently upgraded QC laboratory of ARGO in the Koropi plant. The measurement takes place under a laminar flow cabinet and the test environment suitability (glassware, particle-free water) is verified before each test. The required amount of samples according to the pharmacopoeia requirements is then tested and the reports are generated according to 21 CFR part 11 rulings. Briefly speaking and as the manufacturer of the particular particle measurement system underscores, without measurement there is no control; indeed.

New portable particle counter for environmental monitoring of the production area

A central element of the quality assurance plan in the production of pharmaceutical packaging and medical devices is the environmental monitoring of the manufacturing zones. ARGO implements such consistent plans in the ISO15378 & ISO13485 certified area (B1 unit, in the Koropi plant) already for several years, but airborne particulate matter measurement was so far outsourced. A new state-of-the-art particle counter (TSI Aerotrak 9310) has been purchased by ARGO and is now used for that purpose in the classified ISO7 area as well as in the Controlled Area. The measurements and reporting are performed according to ISO14644-1 both in operation and at rest occupancy states with the responsibility of the Quality Unit. In addition, the possession of this instrument allowed for an increase in the monitoring frequency. This practice further ensures and demonstrates the compliance of the manufacturing areas with the strict cleanliness requirements associated with the intended use of these products.
