ARGO EGYPT PLASTICS in collaboration with market leaders

ARGO EGYPT PLASTICS continues growing by investing – apart from the strong local players – on the co-operation with multinational companies. Recently, two multinational companies in the field of food & dairy (DANONE EGYPT) and cosmetics (LOREAL EGYPT) have trusted the development of their branded bottles to ARGO EGYPT PLASTICS. For these new projects ARGO EGYPT has already invested in 4 new machines, thus increasing the number of machines operating in our El Obour plant and the current production capacity. The assigned bottles are in volumes ranging from 100ml up to 700ml and will be monolayer (HDPE and PP) as well as multilayer (COEX). Meanwhile, only 2 years after its establishment, ARGO EGYPT PLASTICS is recognized as one of the leading plastic packaging producers in Egypt and the MENA region with focus on the quality and innovation of its products.

Venting caps Packaging distortion is quite common problem for some product categories. The container is deformed due significant difference between the pressure inside the container and the pressure of surrounding environment: Certain active formulas create gas, which is captured in the container and caused container to bloat/swell. In other cases the product in the container consumes oxygen from headspace and this leads to paneling. In both cases changes in altitude (and therefore change in surrounding pressure) and temperature can catalyze this activity.

In ARGO, we have worked on this issue even since 80s, proposing various solutions depending on the cause. These include container reinforcement by proper polymer grades, by advanced design, by weight increase, by wall thickness control on sensitive areas or venting closures. Our new proposal refers to venting closures. First applications presented at closure models Agrochem 50 and Agrochem 50VTE. These Argo standard closures are offered with vented induction sealing liners. The liners allow via a hole on them and the bottle thread, air movement between inside of the bottle and the outside environment. As a result, the container is breathing and by this swelling or paneling of the bottle is eliminated.

Mr.Riva in the middle at Argo with Mr.Haris Panopoulos of Panchart SA, Secretary General of the Association of Hellenic Plastics Industry (right) and Mr.George Stassinopoulos, CEO of Argo SA, Vice President of Association of Hellenic Plastics Industry (left).

On January 18th ArgoNews had the opportunity to discuss with Mr.Giuseppe Riva, Regional Director –Mediterranean Region of Plastic Europe organization, by the opportunity of his visit to Argo. What is PlasticsEurope , what is the role of Plastics Industry in European economy, how the organization see the future of plastics and especially in packaging , how crisis influence the industry, can plastics contribute to sustainable development? Mr.Giuseppe Riva had the kindness to answer to the above questions: PlasticsEurope has more than 100 member companies, producing over 90% of all polymers across the 27 EU member states

plus Norway, Switzerland, Croatia and Turkey. The European plastics industry - plastics producers, converters and machinery manufacturers – are significantly contributing to the European economy (with trade exceeding the 12 billion euro). The industry directly employs some 1.6 million people and many more that work in industries relying on plastics for their business. Nowadays, in less than 100years from 1930’s first plastics derivatives of petroleum, which impelled plastics industry to mass production, we can not imagine our life without plastics. Thanks to them we have cleaner, easier, safer and more enjoyable life.

Plastics are organic, the same as wood, paper or wool. The raw materials for plastics production are natural products such as cellulose, coal, natural gas, salt and, of course, crude oil. Plastics are today’s and tomorrow’s materials of choice because they make it possible to balance modern day needs with environmental concerns. Their impressive variety of properties and ratio of cost to performance, offer better lives to people of all income groups. But meeting the needs of society is not just about ‘’today’’. Future generations also have the right to enjoy a safe environment and a good life. Meeting the needs of tomorrow is the foundation of the concept of ‘Sustainable Development’. Plastic products are already contributing to natural resources conservation and helping to protect the environment for tomorrow, in a rapidly changing world. No doubt, the world will face a numerous challenges in the coming future: greenhouse

gasses and their consequences, a rapidly growing and more mobile population, an increasingly tight supply –demand balance for fossil fuels, aging and growing in population, with ever-increasing demands for water, food, shelter, sanitation, energy, health services and economic security etc. PlasticsEurope believe that by taking a proactive, inclusive approach to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, will be best able to contribute to a sustainable world. These activities focus, in the first instance, on three key areas: energy efficiency and climate protection; resource efficiency; and consumer protection. Plastics industry is constantly driving innovation that brings benefits to society in all three parameters of sustainability. It is not an exaggeration to say that if plastics did not exist, we would probably need to invent them to tackle these issues.
