Sugar

Eating too much sugar may be the reason some people develop metabolic problems but still have a normal weight.

It’s Not Just Empty, Fattening Calories— It’s Making Us Sick By Robert Lustig

C

hildren are manifesting increased rates of adult diseases like hypertension or high triglycerides. And they are getting diseases that used to be unheard of in children, like Type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease. So why is this happening?

If calories come from sugar, they just aren’t the same.

IK A/ ISTO CK

Diabetes Is Increasing Faster Than Obesity It’s clear that the cause of rising rates of health conditions like Type 2 diabetes isn’t as simple as people just eating too many calories. Obesity is increasing globally at 1 percent per year, while diabetes is increasing globally at 4 percent per year. If diabetes were just a subset of obesity, how could you explain its more rapid increase? And certain countries are obese without being diabetic (such as Iceland, Mongolia, and Micronesia), while other countries are diabetic without being obese (India, Pakistan, and China, for instance). Twelve percent of people in China have diabetes, but the obesity rate is much lower. The United States is the fattest nation on Earth and our diabetes prevalence is 9.3 percent. While 80 percent of the obese population in the United States is metabolically ill (meaning they have conditions like diabetes,

hypertension, lipid problems, and heart disease), 20 percent is not. Conversely, 40 percent of the normal-weight population has metabolic syndrome. If normal-weight people have these conditions, how then are they related to obesity? Indeed, we now know that obesity is a marker rather than a cause for these diseases. Epidemiological studies have found a correlation between added sugar consumption and health conditions like cardiovascular disease. So could cutting excess sugar out of our diets reverse metabolic syndrome?

ABID

Everyone assumes this is the result of the obesity epidemic—too many calories in, too few out. Children and adults are getting fat, so they’re getting sick. And it is generally assumed that no one specific food causes it because “a calorie is a calorie.” I’ve been studying the role that sugar plays in contributing to chronic disease for years, and my research group at the University of Califor-

nia, San Francisco (UCSF) has just published research in the journal Obesity that challenges this assumption. If calories come from sugar, they just aren’t the same.

After 10 days without processed sugar, children’s blood sugar tolerance improved.

What Happens When You Stop Feeding Kids Added Sugar? Our group at UCSF studied 43 Latino and African-American children with obesity and metabolic syndrome over a 10-day period. We started by assessing their metabolic status—insulin and glucose levels, as well as blood fats and other markers for disease, like lactate and free fatty acids—on their home diet. See Sugar on B7

ANCIENT REMEDIES THAT WORK

Siberian Ginseng for Energy and Endurance By Conan Milner | Epoch Times Staff Adaptogen is a term used to describe herbs that help the body adapt to stress. Today, several herbs fall under this category, but the name was first given to Siberian ginseng. A Soviet scientist invented the term in 1947 while he was studying the actions of Siberian ginseng as part of a Cold War investigation to find herbs with the potential to strengthen Soviet soldiers. Scientists saw success with the army, so Siberian ginseng was also given to Russian cosmonauts and Soviet Olympic athletes to increase their stamina and endurance as well. Siberian ginseng is the name everyone knows, but today you can only find the herb under its botanical name: Eleutherococcus or eleuthero. A provision in the 2002 Farm Bill prevents product labels from using the term “ginseng” with any plants outside the Panax genus. Siberian ginseng is a close relative, but not that close. Siberian ginseng is a name that was given to this herb when it was first marketed to the West a few decades ago. It is found all over East Asia and has been used in China for at least 2,000 years. But since most of the modern research came out of Russia it picked up the Siberian moniker. The ginseng half of the name served to woo consumers with a trusted brand. Siberian ginseng has similar characteristics to Panax ginseng—a man-shaped root with a long reputation for bringing strength and vitality to the old and weak. However, Panax ginseng is one of the most revered and expensive herbs in traditional Chinese medicine, while Siberian ginseng is comparatively cheap and easy to come by. In traditional Chinese medicine, Siberian ginseng is known as “ci wu jia”—a name referring to the plant’s five-leaflet pattern and spiny stems. Ci wu jia may not enjoy the same status of true ginseng, but it’s still considered a valuable medicine. Chinese herbalists use it for symptoms associated with spleen- and kidney-yang deficiency: poor appetite, fatigue, sore back, and general weakness. The renowned Ming Dynasty physician Li Shizhen recommended Siberian ginseng to heal hernias and weak tendons, and to

slow the effects of aging. Modern studies have found more uses for this plant. In Germany, it is often used to support cancer patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. In Russia, Siberian ginseng was given to people living near the Chernobyl accident to counteract the effects of radiation poisoning. Other studies suggest that Siberian ginseng is good for preventing herpes outbreaks and yeast infections. Commission E—a German regulatory agency that evaluates botanical medicine—approves Siberian ginseng for exhaustion. The herb is often used to minimize the effects of chronic illness such as chronic fatigue syndrome or other illnesses characterized by exhaustion. Those without chronic illness use Siberian ginseng to enhance mental and physical performance, as well as immunity. Although it is sometimes included in herbal formulas to promote sleep, Siberian ginseng is actually like a slow-motion stimulant. Unlike the sharp rise and fall of energy associated with caffeine, the energy from Siberian ginseng may take weeks or months to build, but the effects are long-lasting. Siberian ginseng’s slow burn makes it useful for treating symptoms associated with weak adrenal glands and a hypothyroid. Once you’ve taken Siberian ginseng for a while, give it a rest. Due to its stimulating nature, herbalists recommend a few weeks’ break following a month or two of treat-

Look for products standardized to contain at least 0.8 percent eleutherosides. The general recommended dose is between 100 milligrams and 300 milligrams a day, but some can safely take more. The first step in the Silver Stars program is always a consultation. During the consultation, trainers assess posture, balance, gait, and how well you can do real life tasks like moving in and around various obstacles and stepping over objects, and how comfortable you are getting up from the floor and standing up from a chair. They also assess your core, overall strength, and your cardiovascular endurance. The exercises typically begin with those that enhance mobility and increase stability, and which help prepare you to safely take on more challenging exercises. Classes have between three and five students only. “Smaller class sizes allow us to keep our eyes on every client, which will help prevent injury that is often found in a larger class setting, Greenspan said. Working Your Hips and Upper Back Can Help Low Back Pain By Jason D’Amelio

f you're looking for relief from a tight and aching lower back, the solution may not be found in the lower back but in the musculature above and below it. If you suffer from lower back pain, and it's not from an injury, you could very well have issues with the mobility of your hips and thoracic spine (midback). trast to the cervical (neck) and lumbar (low back) spines, which are designed for stability. So a lack of movement in the hips or thoracic spine will lead to increased stress and excessive movement in the low back. The solution is a combination of mobility exercises for the hips and thoracic spine and stability exercises for the lumbar spine. To test for hip mobility, lie on the floor or a table with both legs straight. Pull one knee straight into your chest, not out to the side. If the other leg lifts off the floor then you have tight hip flexors. If your quadriceps (muscles on the front of your thigh) are tight then the bent leg will want to straighten out. Repeat this test with the other leg bent to assess the mobility in your other hip. Another way to test hip mobility is to lie on your back on the floor, bring one leg up, and rest your ankle on top of the quad of the other leg just above the knee. You should have less than a fist-width of space between your bent knee and the floor. If you do not, then your hips are tight on that side. How to Avoid Misdiagnosis From Ultrasounds and MRIs

GPOINTSTUDIO/ISTOCK

Taking the right steps can save you from surgery.

A major report by the Institute of Medicine earlier this year found that just about all of us will be misdiagnosed at least once in our lives. When it comes Dr. AlexanderKulick. to ultrasounds and MRIs to identify the cause of chronic pain, misinterpreted results can result in unnecessary surgeries. Dr. Alexander Kulick, an integrative physician and former ER doctor, said that before you go under the knife, it’s important to get a second opinion and to get checked for entrapped nerves. Dr. Kulick has had patients who came to him after being misdiagnosed. Some of them didn’t realize they had been misdiagnosed until surgery failed to fix their pain. One of the main reasons patients are misdiagnosed is that, especially for people over 50, it’s pretty much a guarantee that ultrasounds and MRIs will show tears, herniations, and other conditions—all of which can appear pretty serious, he said.

The normal wear and tear of aging can look problematic on ultrasounds and MRIs, when they’re really not. “If you get an ultrasound or MRI, you’re going to wish you never looked at it,” he said. “There will be disk herniation and bulges all over the place.” But these can be entirely benign and unrelated to your pain. One of the first things you can do to avoid misdiagnosis when you get the results is to ask your doctor if the location of your pain is typical for the condition indicated by the ultrasound or MRI, he said. Dr. Kulick said sometimes the test results look so bad that physicians recommend surgery even when the symptoms don’t precisely correlate. For example, he had a patient who came to him after being scheduled for surgery to fuse the L3-L4 disks of his low back. However, the pain he had was not at all consistent with these disks. Dr. Kulick took a look with musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound and found that the patient had a trapped sciatic nerve. He did two rounds of a 20-minute procedure called hydrodissection to free the nerve, and nine months later, the patient is still completely pain-free—no surgery needed. Another reason for misdiagnosis is that it can be difficult for patients to precisely describe pain to their doctors, and pain in the same spot can have different causes. For example, knee pain is frequently caused

by a tear in a knee cartilage called the meniscus. “So if you point to a spot on your knee and say, ‘I feel pain here,’ and you get an MRI and see a tear, before you know it, you’re in the operating room,” Dr. Kulick said. But very close to where you’d feel pain if your meniscus were torn, you could be feeling pain from a trapped fibular nerve, he said. So why don’t doctors routinely check for trapped nerves before surgery? Because ability to use MSK ultrasound to detect trapped nerves is a new field of study and is just now opening up the possibility of fast, reliable diagnosis. Dr. Kulick learned about MSK ultrasound in a class he took four years ago and estimates he’s spent around 2,000 hours since then learning to recognize trapped nerves. “I totally went for it because I suspected trapped nerves would be heavily misdiagnosed, and it is exciting to save a patient from surgery and frequently see patients get almost immediate relief.” Integrative Medicine and Pain Management 112 E. 61st St. New York, NY 10065 212-867-1777 DrAlexanderKulick.com

Do you work in an office where people often need to go outside for a walk or frequently step out for a cup of coffee? Or how about that afternoon lull right around 2 p.m. when you feel like you need to take a nap? The air quality of the building you work in may be contributing to your drowsiness, and researchers recently found that improved air quality can greatly enhance cognitive function and performance of workers. Thanks to commercial energy-efficiency measures that started in the 1970s to combat the rising cost of energy, many conventional offices nowadays have minimal ventilation. Airtight buildings elevate the concentration of indoor pollutants and CO2, and increase the potential for poor indoor environmental quality (IEQ), according to a study released Oct. 26. Researchers from Harvard, SUNY Upstate Medical University, and Syracuse University reported that poor ventilation decreases workers’ cognitive function and productivity. During the double blind study, conducted for six days in November 2014, researchers exposed 24 participants to various simulated building conditions as the volunteers performed normal office work. Researchers controlled for ventilation, CO2, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are largely human-made chemicals emitted as gases from many products like paints, adhesives, aerosol sprays, cleaners, and air fresheners. The researchers classified conditions as “Green” (low VOC concentration) versus “Conventional” (high VOC concentration). The latter

environment is typical of many office buildings today. They also simulated an environment with a high outdoor air ventilation rate, labeled Green+. In the Green+ environments, participants on average doubled their cognitive performance. Cognitive scores when participants worked in Green environments were 61 percent higher than when they worked in Conventional environments. Researchers tested nine cognitive functions and found the largest improvements in the areas of crisis response, strategy, and information usage. However, all nine functions tested were significantly better in the Green+ environment compared to a Conventional environment.

Tips to Improve Office Air Clean. Routinely wet-wipe all surfaces to remove dust and dirt. The more you clean, the less you breathe in. Get Plants. NASA research shows that plants help purify the air. Peace lilies, English ivy, and spider plants are good low-maintenance options. Unplug Air Fresheners. Commercial air fresheners can emit VOCs, so if you want a freshersmelling workspace, use an essential oil diffuser instead. Some essential oils may actually help improve focus and concentration. Open a Window. If you’re one of the lucky ones who has a window, open it.

However, nachos are typically the furthest thing from health food … until now. Feast your eyes on this healthy nacho recipe. The purpose of this healthy nacho recipe is to turn a fan favorite into a delicious, health-promoting snack. This means their diet had no sugar from sugarcane or high fructose corn syrup. The kids consumed foods such as fruits and other whole foods that naturally contain some sugar. These foods also have fiber, which reduces the rate of sugar absorption, so they don’t affect the body the same way that added sugar does. We took chicken teriyaki out. We put turkey hot dogs in. We took sweetened yogurt out. We put baked potato chips in. We took donuts out. We put bagels in. We gave them unhealthy processed food, just with no added sugar. The children were given a scale to take home, and if their weight was declining, we made them eat more. Then we studied them again. The children had eaten the same number of calories and had not lost any weight, and yet every aspect of their metabolic health improved. With added sugar cut out of their diet for 10 days, blood pressure, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or “bad cholesterol”), insulin sensitivity, and glucose tolerance all improved. And remember, we weren’t giving them just leafy greens and tofu—we fed the kids processed foods, just ones without sugar. Further studies are needed to see if this will also work in adults and if the benefits are shortterm or long-term. Sugar Is Like Alcohol This study demonstrates that a calorie is not a calorie, and that sugar is a primary contribu-

tor to metabolic syndrome, unrelated to calories or weight gain. By removing added sugar, we improved metabolic health. Sugar may not be the only contributor to chronic disease, but it is far and away the easiest one to avoid. Kids could improve their metabolic health—even while continuing to eat processed food—just by dumping the sugar. Can you imagine how much healthier they’d be if they ate real food? The naysayers will say, “But sugar is natural. Sugar has been with us for thousands of years. Sugar is food, and how can food be toxic?” Webster’s Dictionary defines food as “material consisting essentially of protein, carbohydrate, and fat used in the body of an organism to sustain growth, repair, and vital processes and to furnish energy.” Sugar by itself furnishes energy, and that’s about it. In that sense, sugar is like alcohol. It’s got calories, but it’s not nutrition. There’s no biochemical reaction that requires it. And at high doses, alcohol can fry your liver. Same with sugar. Fructose, the sweet molecule in sugar, contains calories that you can burn for energy, but it’s not nutrition because there’s no biochemical reaction that requires it. In excess, sugar can fry your liver just like alcohol. And this makes sense because where do you get alcohol from? Fermentation of sugar. Too much sugar causes diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease, and tooth decay. When consumed in excess, it’s a toxin. And it’s addictive—just like alcohol. That’s why children are getting the diseases of alcohol—Type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease—without alcohol. But our research suggests we could turn this around in 10 days—if we chose to. Cure Eczema, Other Atopic Allergies by Getting Rid of Waste Underneath the Skin Part 3 COURTESY OF DR. SEO HYO-SEOK

By Dr. Seo Hyo-seok Say goodbye to allergies when you restore the intelligence of the immune system by reinforcing lung function. The skin is the single largest organ in our body with a total weight that is two times that of the brain. As the first line of defense, it prevents the penetration of pathoDr. Seo Hyo-seok gens into the body, helps adjust body temperature, and is equipped with various sensors including tactile sensors, pressure sensors, pain sensors, and hot and cold sensors. And it also breathes! Close examination of the skin surface reveals that there are a very large number of pores on the skin. When the skin is spread out, its total area is on average around 194 square feet, and each square inch contains on average 65 hair follicles, 100 sebaceous (oil) glands, 650 sweat glands, more than 1,500 nerve receptors, as well as a countless number of nerves. These are not just sitting there idle, on the contrary, they ceaselessly communicate and discard waste matter. This waste matter can be categorized into two main types, namely, water soluble and fat soluble waste. Water (aqueous) waste is discarded through the sweat glands, while fatty (lipid) waste is discarded through the sebaceous glands and hair follicles. The skin collects and discards these two types separately, playing the role of an exhaust pipe that ceaselessly discards accumulated waste.

ing of the body to be 100 percent, the lung accounts for 95 percent while the skin accounts for 5 percent of the total breathing. Accordingly, the lung can be seen as the headquarters and the skin as its branch offices. Improvement of the headquarters will benefit the branch offices, therefore when the major respiratory organ, the lungs, become healthier, then the minor respiratory organ, the skin, will also become healthier and the blocked hair follicles will be opened. The result of unblocking both the sweat glands hair follicles is not only the restoration of healthy skin but also excellent health of the entire body. Breathing is not simply the process of discarding carbon dioxide and taking in oxygen, but also an COURTESY OF DR. SEO HYO-SEOK

Those who use synthetic drugs are put at greater risk of developing allergies because our bodies reject them. When The Exhaust Pipe Is Blocked What happens when one’s exhaust pipe becomes blocked? When one is stressed, the hair follicles close, and when one does not exercise or sweat, the sweat glands don’t fully discharge their waste. After a prolonged period this waste and the toxic substances will accumulate under the skin, which results in various skin diseases. Water waste and fatty waste must both be discharged from the body, not only to keep the skin clean but also to maintain the health of the body. If they accumulate under the skin, body heat cannot be released and increased temperature can become toxic. Accumulation of toxic heat will manifest as eczema while accumulation of fat will result in acne. Sedimentation of pigment will result in freckles or age spots. [Editor’s note: In Oriental medicine, heat is considered a pathogen that in excess can lead to inflammatory conditions.] How Healing the Lungs Heals the Skin Although the manifestation of skin diseases takes various forms, I believe there is only one cause— the accumulation of waste and toxic substances in the body. Since the cause is the same, the principles for treatment are also the same. We simply need to detox these substances by opening up the blocked sweat glands and hair follicles. To open up the sweat glands, you just need to take a sauna or steam bath, or exercise strenuously enough to sweat. If this is not possible, bathing of the lower body in warm water can do the trick. The key to opening blocked hair follicles lies in the lungs. If we consider the total quantity of breath-

Patients before (left) and after being treated for eczema at Pyunkang Korean Medicine Hospital. important metabolic process of discharging noxious matter from the body and taking in favorable substances. Therefore, only when the lungs are healthy, will the body be able to completely discharge waste matter. Using these principles, I have managed to fully cure more than 40,000 eczema patients—patients of all ages, genders, and countries, over the last 42 years. As a result, I am able to confidently state that, all skin diseases including eczema can be only cured when the waste matter accumulated underneath the skin is discarded. Why Steroids Don’t Help The modern medical treatment for severe eczema (atopic dermatitis) is steroids, and since sweating can temporarily inflame eczema, doctors may tell you to avoid sweating too much. But in my experience, steroids only temporarily pacify eczema and can worsen it later on and sweating, although it may seem to make it worse in the short term, will actually help heal it. When steroids are used, skin that has been badly damaged due to eczema will initially seem to heal. However, within a year the symptoms will come back. Since the initial treatment was so effective, patients

assume it will work just as well again. But this is not the case because steroids make sweat glands and hair follicles close tightly temporarily stopping waste from being discharged from the body. Since the itchiness of eczema is caused by the discharge of accumulated toxins, and steroids prevent this discharge, they will stop he itching. However, the underlying condition has not been improved. As the dose of steroids is increased, waste accumulates in enormous quantities and will eventually penetrate deeper into the body. When waste enters the bones, it kills cells necessary to form bones (osteoblasts) resulting in osteoporosis. Steroid use can also cause diabetes and high blood pressure. If a person has been using steroids and has all three of these conditions, I consider that they are addicted to steroids. Although it is possible to fully cure a normal eczema patient within six months through the herbal Pyunkang-Hwan medicine I developed, it will take patients with severe steroid addiction more than three and half years to cure their eczema completely. These patients often have very severe detox symptoms and need hospitalization to help them cope. So, I emphasize once again that steroids must not be used under any circumstances whatsoever for eczema. Those who use synthetic drugs are put at greater risk of developing allergies because our bodies reject them. When the immune system frequently rejects something, it will eventually lose its discerning ability and come to react very sensitively to the substance when it encounters it again. There is an old saying in Korean, “A child who has been burned dreads fire,” and due to repeated rejection of synthetic substances, the body will end up rejecting even the natural substance that it encounters, thinking it is also a synthetic drug. When the function of the lungs and heart improve, the discerning ability of the immune system improves markedly. This in turn will produce healthy lymphocytes that seek and clean all the toxic matter throughout the body, and nurture the ability to eradicate harmful germs and viruses that invade the body. Once the immune system is able to distinguish between self and foreign substances, it is possible to overcome not only eczema, but also other various allergic diseases with ease. Dr. Seo Hyo-seok is the director of the Pyunkang Korean Medicine Hospital, which has seven branches in South Korea, one at Stanton University in California, and one in Atlanta. Dr. Seo entered at the top of his class from Kyung Hee University in Korea and after years of research developed PyunkangHwan herbal formula, which improves immunity by strengthening lung function. It has helped cure over 155,000 patients of various conditions. Find out more at Pyunkang.com Email: Dr.Seo@wwdoctor.com
