any of your relatives probably have an answer to the question of whether you are more your mother’s or your father’s child. But the correct answer to the question is not as simple as it might seem. Genetically, you actually carry more of your mother’s genes than your father’s. That’s because of little organelles that live within

your cells, the mitochondria, which you only receive from your mother. Mitochondria are the energy-producing factories of the cell; without them, a cell would not be able to generate energy from food. Mitochondria have an interesting history, as about 1.5 billion to 2 billion years ago they were free-living organisms. The ancestor of all mitochondria was a bacterium that was engulfed by another bacterium, but for one reason or another not digested, giving rise to the eukaryotes. The eukaryotes are basically all plants, animals, and fungi, plus some rather weird organisms grouped together under Protista.

Gum Disease Wiped Out With
SAMIRA BOUAOU/EPOCH TIMES
NEW LASER TREATMENT Because the laser can treat and repair gum disease, patients spend less time in the dentist’s chair, have a shorter recovery time, and a lot less pain.

What Is LANAP? LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is a protocol that uses the PerioLase MVP-7 laser to gently remove bacteria and diseased soft tissue from the gums and regenerate bone around the tooth. The laser was originally FDA-approved for soft tissue repair. But last month, the FDA also approved LANAP for its ability to regenerate bone, which is typically cut away during conventional surgery. Dr. Chris Chondrogiannis, a periodontist who is part of the team at Madison Avenue Periodontics, said the FDA is very strict about what true regeneration is. To meet the FDA’s standards, the laser must be able to regenerate bone so that it is attached to the tooth. And that is not readily seen on an X-ray, but it can be proven microscopically. “We take sections, and you [can] show bone with a ligament attached to a tooth, and that’s true regeneration,” Dr. Chondrogiannis said. For about 40 years, the gold standard for bone regeneration has been conventional surgery using bone grafts, growth factors, and other biological materials. The risks include swelling, bleeding, and considerable post-op pain. Dr. Chondrogiannis explained that the laser can “actually recreate bone by the way it stimulates the existing blood.” Benefits of LANAP Because the laser can treat and repair gum

disease, patients spend less time in the dentist’s chair, have a shorter recovery time, and a lot less pain. Patients usually only have to follow up for two visits. “You’re pretty much controlling an entire disease in two visits,” Dr. Chondrogiannis said. It seems too good to be true, so people expect LANAP to be more expensive than conventional surgery. “In fact, it’s a lot less expensive because we don’t need to use the bio-material,” Dr. Lanzetta said, referring to bone grafts and other kinds of materials used to stimulate bone. In addition, patients with chronic diseases don’t have to stop taking their medications. For example, heart patients who take blood thinners like Coumadin, Plavix, and Xarelto would have to stop the medication while undergoing conventional surgery— to reduce the risk of increased bleeding. Or they might not be candidates for surgery in the first place. The LANAP procedure allows patients to continue taking their medications because the properties of the laser create stable blood clots, Dr. Chondrogiannis said. Also, the laser is noninvasive, so the patient is less prone to post-operative infection, Dr. Lanzetta said. You get all of these benefits with “as good, if not better results,” he added. The dentists at Madison Avenue Periodontics recommend LANAP for laser gum surgery because it’s convenient, and it improves the health of your entire smile.

If you or a loved one has chronic bad breath, it might be caused by something other than your daily cup of coffee. It could actually be a sign of periodontal disease, a gum infection that can travel to other parts of your body. Periodontal disease starts when tartar and bacteria get trapped under the gum line. In the early stages, you may notice bleeding after brushing. More serious signs include swollen or discolored gums, spontaneous bleeding, and chronic bad breath. So if you’re ignoring these signs because you think it’s normal, think again. “Untreated gum disease is constantly seeding bad bacteria into the bloodstream,” said Dr. John Lanzetta, a periodontist at Madison Avenue Periodontics who specializes in advanced dental laser surgery. He said the bacteria contribute “to blood-clot formation in vessels around the heart, leading to stroke and heart attack.” And there are other diseases, like diabetes, that become riskier if you continue to ignore your bleeding gums. “Uncontrolled periodontal disease can make it hard to manage blood sugar,” Dr. Lanzetta said, referring to a diabetic’s elevated glucose levels. Unfortunately, many people prefer to ignore their bleeding gums because of dental anxiety, fear of high cost, or thinking they’re just too busy. The team of skilled periodontists at Madison Avenue Periodontics has a solution to those worries: FDA-approved LANAP laser gum surgery, a cheaper, noninvasive surgical procedure that selectively kills disease-causing bacteria without a scalpel or sutures, and with minimal bleeding and recovery time.
Dr. Chris Chondrogiannis (L) and Dr. John Lanzetta at Madison Avenue Periodontics in Manhattan on April 27.
The research is reported in the journal Public Health Nursing. When mothers viewed their children as picky eaters—unwilling to try unfamiliar foods—a decrease also was seen in the amount of fruits and vegetables consumed. “Perceptions of a toddler as a picky eater may be related to parenting style or culture,” Horodynski says. “Mothers who viewed their children as picky eaters may be more lax in encouraging the consumption of fruits and vegetables.” Previous research shows that early repeated exposure to different types of foods is needed. Up to 15 exposures may be needed before it can be determined if a child likes or dislikes a food. The study, which collected information from mothers from 28 Michigan counties, also revealed differences among race: Black mothers and toddlers did not consume as much fruit and vegetables as non-Hispanic whites, though a majority of all study subjects fell below recommended U.S. dietary guidelines. “Special attention must be given to familybased approaches to incorporating fruits and vegetables into daily eating habits,” she says. “Efforts to increase mothers’ fruit and vegetable intake would result in more positive role modeling.” Public health nurses and other health professionals must play an important role in enhancing mothers’ awareness of the importance of healthy eating, Horodynski adds. “Mother needs to have the knowledge and confidence to make these healthy decisions for their children.”
“Health professionals need to consider this when developing strategies to increase a This article was originally published by child’s consumption of healthy foods. Diets Michigan State University. instead of DNA sequencing. This simply means that beyond your inherited genetic makeup, how you live also impacts genetic expression— how your genes communicate with your cells. In Chinese medicine, your body constitution is shaped by something called essence. It determines your overall health, how you grow and mature, your fertility, and the aging process. You inherit that essence from your ancestors, which sets the stage for your physical makeup (much like genes). As you age, that original essence is slowly depleted and can never be replaced. When it’s completely used up, you die. However, there is a second kind of essence that can augment and conserve the original stuff. By living healthfully, eating well, and avoiding crazy extremes, you can protect your original essence so it does not decline as quickly. This centuries-old theory from Chinese medicine sounds very much like the current, cutting-edge study of epigenetics. Beyond claiming to have known this first, Chinese medicine also offers up some ideas on how to protect yourself to age as long and healthfully as possible. This includes the following:
M
y neighbor Marie is hardly ever home. She’s out during the day at one of her volunteering gigs or hanging out with a friend. Friday nights are date night, which usually involves dinner out with her boyfriend. Weekends are spent visiting with family, and during the summer, she spends time at the lake cabin. It’s no wonder that I rarely see her—she’s constantly on the go. The kicker is that Marie is 88 years old. Marie is a role model for how I want to age. She’s active, involved, and relatively healthy. It’s a puzzle, however, why some people grow older with good health and energy, and others decline much sooner. Certainly genetics and lifestyle play a big role. That said, there are many exceptions—people living into their 80s, 90s, and even past 100, who have been dealt a poor genetic hand and have never paid much attention to living the clean life. So, what’s the deal? One explanation may involve the theory behind epigenetics, in which your genes are affected by external or environmental factors BILL XIE/EPOCH TIMES
1. Balance Your Rest and Work Cycles. You need enough rest in the form of sleep to heal and rejuvenate your body. In addition, while a certain amount of work is important to keep your mind sharp, in Chinese medicine working excessively is considered to be a cause of illness.
cates that people with a negative outlook have a shortened expected lifespan. My prescription? A little gratitude every day. Your genetic makeup is a bit like a hand you are dealt in a card game. You may get a good or not-so-good hand, but how you play the game is really what counts. Whether talking about epigenetics or how to preserve essence in Chinese medicine, lifestyle choices make a difference in how you age. Lynn Jaffee is a licensed acupuncturist and the author of “Simple Steps: The Chinese Way to Better Health.” This article was originally published on AcupunctureTwinCities.com. 2. Move Your Body. Movement in the form of exercise is the closest thing to the fountain of youth. Movement creates more movement and keeps your joints lubricated, your blood flowing, your heart and lungs healthy, and your mind sharp. Just remember to balance it with adequate rest. 3. What You Eat Makes a Difference. You can’t expect to ignore your diet for decades and live long and healthfully. Yes, sometimes it happens that you will see a 90-year-old who lives on bagged snacks and food from the drive-up window—but not many. By eating real food, predominantly plantbased, that hasn’t been preserved or otherwise “enhanced” with chemicals, you will be ahead of the game. And you don’t have to revamp your whole kitchen. Research has documented that even small, healthful dietary changes make a positive difference in your health. 4. Mind Over Matter. The Chinese have a saying that the emotions are the cause of 1,000 diseases, and I have found this to be true in my acupuncture practice. Stress, anxiety, worry, depression, and negativity impact your health, and not in a good way. Negative emotions impact your digestion, sleep, blood pressure, and hormonal makeup, for starters. The impact of a poor emotional state is very real and far-reaching. Current research indi-

rystal Stewart suffered from bunions on both feet; walking and standing were painful and she was considering surgery. However, as a diabetic and self-described “big baby” when it comes to pain, she had concerns. One day she saw an ad for minimally invasive bunion surgery and, curious to know more, made an appointment. Stewart was immediately comforted when podiatrist Dr. Andrew Glass explained how much less trauma the foot endures with minimally invasive procedures. Currently, the most common surgery for bunions requires an opening of two to three inches and often involves sawing off or breaking the metatarsals (mid-foot bones, located above the toes). Pins and screws are often needed and the healing time can take 2–3 months. It can also be detrimental because by reshaping the foot, it can change the way the patient walks or stands. Minimally invasive bunion surgery is done with only a 5-millimeter incision. The procedure is performed with long, thin instruments inserted through this opening. The surgeon carefully shaves off the protruding bone causing the bunion while looking at real-time X-ray images to see what’s happening underneath the skin. The healing time is generally much faster. Stewart’s first bunion surgery took about 30 minutes; she had one stitch to close the wound and went home the same day with minimal pain. “It turned out to be a better experience than I thought it would be,” she said, adding that her

next surgery is already scheduled. Glass’s own issues with pain spurred his passion to practice minimally invasive surgery and he was among the first surgical podiatrists in the U.S. to practice this new technique. Although it’s becoming more widespread, minimally invasive bunion surgery is still much less common in the United States than in Europe. Minimally invasive surgeries fell out of favor with doctors after some surgeons in the ’70s and ’80s got bad results–the doctors were doing the surgeries blindly without real-time X-rays. Today, Dr. Glass does 100’s of minimally invasive surgeries a year and is the only surgeon in NYC who provides this new option.

the All-Natural Facelift Western culture (especially in the United States) equates beauty with youth and perfection. The average age of a cover girl model is 23–24 years old. Gray hair, wrinkles, and sagging skin are the visible markers of being “old.” While you know in your heart appearance is not the whole of you, there is a nagging realization that looks are associated with success and status. The issue of losing attractiveness is about becoming irrelevant, passed over, and even worse—invisible. Cosmetic surgery and procedures are scary and play upon the fears of not being good enough. The pressure to do something is enormous, and the boom in plastic surgery and anti-aging cosmetics take advantage of this emotional vulnerability. Plastic surgery offers a large variety of solutions, but they are costly and invasive and come with health risks, pain, and recovery time. Perhaps some of your friends and colleagues have done procedures, but the idea of plastics and neurotoxins being injected into your face is not appealing (at least it wasn’t to me). There is the possibility that you won’t look like you. Worse is the possibility that people will know you did something and judge you as insecure, vain, or superficial. Many professional and successful women confess that if they knew about a natural alternative, they would go for that instead. An Eastern Medicine Alternative Eastern medicine recognizes that our physical, emotional, and spiritual health shines through our face and skin. While we may believe that youth is beauty, the truth is that health is beauty. Facial-rejuvenation acupuncture is a safe, painless, and non-surgical method of reducing the signs of aging. but helps your whole body look and feel younger. Yes, facial-rejuvenation acupuncture does work. How Facial Rejuvenation Works Acupuncture for facial rejuvenation is a safe, painless, non-surgical acupuncture facelift. It is an ancient method used to slow and reverse the signs of aging. Acupuncture is a tradition of healing from the East that has been developing for 2,500 years. It is a part of a medicine system that treats the whole person (body, mind, and spirit). A course of Acupuncture Facial Rejuvenation treatments will address the whole body’s health and the underlying causes of aging, as well as the surface signs of stress and aging that show up on the face. This means that your skin will not only look younger, it will actually be healthier. Essentially, as improvements are made to your body, the effects are radiance and a beautiful, lasting afterglow in your face. Benefits of Acupuncture Facial Rejuvenation • Stimulates collagen production, which increases facial elasticity and fills in wrinkles • Moisturizes and nourishes your skin by increasing local circulation of blood and lymph • Tightens pores • Brightens the eyes • Improves hormonal balance to help acne problems and reduce stress • Reduces fine lines by increasing your body’s production of collagen • Reduces your jowls and lifts drooping eyelids by encouraging dermal contractions • Softens and fills the so-called smile lines and frown lines • Lifts droopy eyelids • Minimizes double chins

The Mother Effect Tissues that require a lot of energy, such as your brain and your muscles, have cells packed with mitochondria. Because all mitochondria you received come from your mother only, you are technically more related to your mum than you are to your dad. This is true for pretty much all animals. In plants and fungi too, mitochondria come from one parent only, although not necessarily from the mother. Why do we have two different kinds of inheritance, one for nuclear genomes (nDNA) that combines parts of the mother and the father, and one for mitochondrial genomes that excludes one parent completely? The reason behind the evolution of socalled uniparental inheritance has long been a mystery among evolutionary biologists. One thing was clear: It better be for a good reason. Mammalian males go through the bother of actually tagging the mitochondria in their sperm so that it is easier to destroy them after the egg has been fertilized. In plants too, the mitochondria from one parent are actively destroyed, this time before fertilization takes place.
For decades the prevailing theory explaining why mitochondria inherit uniparentally was the “conflict theory.” The idea is that mtDNA replicates independently within the cell, so the number of copies increases over time. And the more copies there are, the more likely some will be transmitted to the daughter cell when that cell divides. If all mtDNA comes from one parent only, then mtDNA within a cell are closely related to each other, as they are all clones. Hence, there is not much scope for competition, as copies of the mitochondrial genomes are basically competing with exact copies of themselves. Unhealthy Competition But imagine what could happen if organelles were derived from both parents, the four grandparents, and so on ad infinitum. This would set the scene for a genetically variable population of organelles in every cell. And this could be bad news, as now different clonal lineages of mtDNA would be competing with each other. The faster mtDNA replicates, the more copies it produces and the more likely it will spread to the next generation of cells. Ultimately, the slower-reproducing organelle lineage will be eliminated from the cell lineage. The smaller an organelle’s genome, the faster it can replicate. Thus, competition among organelles within cells selects for smaller genomes. At some stage, genomes will be so small that the function of the organelle is affected. Remember that the mitochon-
dria produce the energy the cell needs, so when their genome size becomes very small, the organelles cease to function properly, and the host cell suffers. Interesting idea. But what is the evidence? Sadly, none. Cleaning the Mix Recently a much simpler explanation was proposed: What if the simple mixing of mitochondrial lineages within the same cell is for some reason costly in itself? This very simple assumption actually nicely explains the peculiar inheritance of mitochondria in theoretical models. But there is more. Mice that were experimentally constructed so that individuals carried two mitochondrial lineages were less active, ate less, were more stressed, and were cognitively impaired. It seems carrying mitochondria from both your parents is bad for you. So why is the question of whether you are more like your mum or dad so hard to answer? Because your genetic makeup is only part of the equation. Which genes are expressed is the other part. And apparently your dad has the upper hand when it comes to which genes are expressed. So you may look more like your dad, but you are more related to your mum after all. How is that for a simple answer? New Mothers Making Time for Themselves Reduces Chance of Postnatal Depression By Hannah Woolhouse & Stephanie Brown
O
ne in three women will experience significant depressive symptoms in the first five years after giving birth. But new research has found if mothers regularly take time for themselves in the first six months after giving birth, they’re less likely to get postnatal depression. In the early months after giving birth, women’s physical health, intimate relationships, and mental health are strained. Many new mothers experience mental health problems, and they do not improve over time. In fact, depression is commonly episodic rather than acute (meaning that it is most likely to come and go), and the prevalence of depression increases over the first four years after giving birth. Maternal depression has clear and obvious impacts on women, children, and families. Despite the importance of women’s mental health after birth, there has been very limited evidence of effective ways to prevent maternal depression and promote mental well-being at this time. Making Time We studied more than 1,500 women and discovered a strong and robust association between “taking time for themselves, when someone else looks after the baby” at six months after birth and the prevalence of depression symptoms. The prevalence of depression symptoms steadily decreased as the frequency of time for self increased. The lowest prevalence of depression was 6 percent in women who had time for themselves once a week or more. Compared to women who had personal time at least once a week, women who never had personal time were three times more likely to experience depression in the postnatal period. Just under half of the women in the study (49 percent) had regular, weekly personal time. One in six reported they never had personal time when someone else looked after the baby. We initially thought the relationship between personal time and depression could be explained by other factors such as relationship status or general practical and emotional support. There was indeed a strong relationship between measures of social support and how often women had time for themselves.
However, even after taking these factors into account, the frequency of time for self significantly predicted maternal depression. Activities commonly reported by women when they had personal time included going out with their partner, having a long bath or shower, going to the hairdresser, or putting their feet up and watching TV. The most commonly reported activity was doing the supermarket shopping. While probably not an activity usually associated with relaxation, a lot of new mothers can probably relate to the sense of peace that comes from doing the shopping alone, after having attempted it with a baby. We suspect that what women actually do when they have time for themselves may not matter so much as that someone else looks after the baby for a while—meaning that women get a break from that responsibility. How to Make the Most of These Findings Maternal mental health is important because the transition to motherhood can be such a challenging time, but also because maternal depression can have long-lasting impacts on children. While a weekly time-out for mothers sounds like a simple fix, it may not be straightforward for all mothers to achieve this. It requires the ongoing support of others—such as partners, family, and friends. These significant others can play an important role in promoting women’s mental health after birth—by encouraging women to take time for themselves and by taking responsibility for looking after the baby for that time. Many new mothers feel they should be able to cope with the demands of caring for a new baby on their own. Therefore, asking for help can be difficult. We know the majority of childcare responsibilities still fall to women. The more we can share the demands of looking after a new baby between partners and other family members, the healthier mothers will be, and thus the healthier children and families will be. Achieve Normal Blood Pressure With Herbal Medicine Part 28 COURTESY OF DR. SEO HYO-SEOK
By Dr. Seo Hyo-seok Our blood flows throughout the body in a vast network of vessels. If all these blood vessels were laid out in a straight line, the total length would be more than 62,000 miles— which is around two and a half times more than the circumference of the earth. The heart maintains life by pumping blood throughout these vessels. The pressure exerted on their walls as the blood moves through them is referred to as blood pressure. Blood pressure is measured in two numbers: systolic over diastolic. Your systolic blood pressure is the pressure of blood when your heart is contracting and pushing the blood through the arteries. The diastolic number is the pressure in your arteries when your heart rests between beats. Normal systolic blood pressure is below 120, while normal diastolic pressure is below 80. High blood pressure is systolic pressure of 140 or above and diastolic pressure of 90 or above. Pressure that is above normal but below high blood pressure is considered prehypertension and can be cause for concern. In general, low blood pressure is systolic pressure that is 90 or less and diastolic blood pressure that is 60 or less. Symptoms of low blood pressure include dizziness, headaches, or fatigue, as well as insomnia, constipation, blurred vision, vomiting, or fainting in severe cases. Complications of High Blood Pressure Although hereditary factors are the biggest cause of high blood pressure, other contributing factors that increase your risk are obesity, eating too much salt, stress, drinking alcohol, lack of exercise, and smoking. Most people have no symptoms of high blood pressure. However if you experience symptoms such as headaches, a heavy head when you get up in the morning, frequent shoulder pain, bloodshot eyes, or shortness of breath, these could be due to high blood pressure, so you should get tested. Severe complications of high blood pressure include a cerebral hemorrhage, which is when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures. This can lead to a stroke and serious disabilities such as paralysis on one side of or throughout the whole body. Dysfunction in blood flow in the brain is also extremely dangerous because if a blood vessel there is blocked or ruptured and the supply of blood to an area of the brain is cut off, it can lead to serious brain damage. High blood pressure can scar and weaken the blood vessels throughout the body, including those in the kidney, which can lead to kidney failure. This in turn,
You won't know if you have high blood pressure unless you check because most people don't have symptoms. will cause breathing difficulties and fluid buildup (edema) in the lung and legs. High blood pressure also leads to thickening and hardening of artery walls (arteriosclerosis). Arteriosclerosis increases the risk of reduced blood flow to the heart and therefore increases the risk of heart attack. How to Get Off Blood Pressure Medication Blood pressure is like a seesaw, and in order to cope with the fluctuations caused by different circumstances, the blood vessels need to be resilient. Approximately 20 percent of high blood pressure patients are able to maintain a normal blood pressure through dietary therapy and regular exercise. For other patients, since medications can control blood pressure, they become dependent on them in order to treat blood pressure problems.
Vasodilators come with their own set of risks and actually increase the burden on the blood vessels. Since it is impossible to predict who will manifest the symptoms described above, those who suffer from high blood pressure often choose to take medication (vasodilators) to widen their blood vessels all their lives as a precaution. However, vasodilators come with their own set of risks and actually increase the burden on the blood vessels. So how can abnormal blood pressure be treated fundamentally? The key is to restore the resilience of the blood vessels so they can regulate pressure under different circumstances. In order to restore this resilience, the heart, the king of blood vessels, must be fortified. Since the heart is a partner organ of the lungs, healthy lungs will naturally improve the health of the heart. Thus cleansing the lungs with herbal medicine will improve the health of the heart and also restore the resilience of the blood vessels. Cleansing the lungs can also treat arteriosclerosis and foster better circulation of blood. In Korean medicine, we would also say it can create harmonious circulation of energy throughout the body. Cleansing the lungs will ultimately allow the body to return to the state where it can automatically adjust blood pressure to an optimum level. Miracles of Cleansing the Lungs One of my patients, a 57-year-old man who works at
a nuclear power plant, came to my office with blood vessels that one would expect to find in a man of 75. However after six months of pulmonary cleansing, the health of his blood vessels was restored to the condition of a 51-year-old man. His case and the cases of many other patients have shown me that it is possible to live without medications and with blood pressure in a normal range when the health of the blood vessels are restored by cleansing the lungs with the Korean herbal formula I developed. In the process of treating many patients with pulmonary cleansing therapy, I have found that once cardiopulmonary functions are fortified, irregular heartbeats can be restored to a desired regularity and arrhythmia can be cured. Moreover angina—a type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart, which can induce heart attacks—naturally disappears when blood circulation improves due to restored blood vessels. Cleansing the lungs can also help with the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Interestingly, drugs for erectile dysfunction are not effective if a man has been taking drugs to regulate blood pressure for more than 15 years. But once the health of the lungs is restored through cleansing the lungs, the health of the heart also improves markedly, thereby assisting the drugs for erectile dysfunction and making them effective. This is another indication that the resilience of blood vessels has been restored. Cleansing the lungs can also improve sexual function without drugs. Once the health of the blood vessels is restored, it is possible for a man to have normal sexual function without using any medications. In summary, you can normalize the blood pressure by cleansing the lungs with herbal medicine. The herbal formula can improve cardiopulmonary functions; enhance the resilience of blood vessels; assist with harmonious circulation of blood and energy throughout the body; improve functioning of the brain, heart, and kidney; and improve sexual function. By cleansing the lungs, it is also possible to overcome complications such as strokes, reduced blood flow to the heart, and kidney disorders induced by high blood pressure. Dr. Seo Hyo-seok is the director of the Pyunkang Korean Medicine Hospital, which has seven branches in South Korea, one at Stanton University in California, and one in Atlanta. Dr. Seo entered Kyung Hee University in Korea at the top of his class and after years of research, developed the Pyunkang-Hwan herbal formula, which improves immunity by strengthening lung function. It has helped cure over 155,000 patients of various conditions. Find out more at Pyunkang.com Email: Dr.Seo@wwdoctor.com KEVIN OH/SHUTTERSTOCK
