Evidence-Based Treatment of a Fractured Navicular Bone. Kristina Grewal, DVM; Monique Craig, BSCE

Foreword Dr. Kristina Grewal is a large animal veterinarian who graduated from Texas A&M with honors and now has her own practice in the Central Coast region of California. Monique Craig is the founder of Eponatech, Eponashoe and the Epona-Institute. The authors met in August of 2008 when Dr. Grewal made a routine call to Monique Craig’s ranch. It was the end of the day and they had time to talk. Immediately, they noticed that they had common interests, namely a passion for the horse’s well-being. Both have a strong penchant for science...some may call them ‘nerds’! Dr. Grewal showed interest in Monique’s approach to treating hoof issues after a few successful navicular and laminitic cases they worked on. They have now joined forces to do research and are now opening a podiatry center in Paso Robles, California. The case presented below is one of many they have been working on. This case is the most interesting since they had the advantage to have thorough diagnostic history of the horse, which they truly believe is very important for proper, informed treatment for any patient. This entails having access to quality diagnostic images that pre-date the current treatment protocol. The following article is an example of their beliefs and approach to treating a certain type of fracture in the navicular bone. Please note that not all navicular bone fractures could be treated this way – some situations would likely require surgical fixation, but due to the position of the fracture in this case, surgery was avoided.
