Each June the Saudi Arabian racing industry shifts its focus from the capital Riyadh to the summer holiday venue of Taif.

With a programme of weekend racing and family entertainment from June to October, an evening at the races offers our guests music, award winning cuisine, raffles, competitions and all the thrills of the on-track racing action.

With free entry and walk-in restaurants as well as five-star hospitality options available, visitors to the races can enjoy a unique meal with a view from our exclusive Nadb Al Nadi building, located on the first turn of picturesque King Khalid Racecourse, or get up close and personal to galloping racehorses from the running rail accessible via the public concourse.

For the discerning racing fan, the Taif programme offers the chance to see the equine stars of tomorrow in action. Saudi Arabia’s most famous jockeys and trainers base themselves in Taif during the summer where they build towards the season’s Major Cups and it is all captured on live television and beamed to homes all around Saudi Arabia and the region.

Racing Preview

Welcome back to King Khalid Racecourse for our 50th meeting of the season. Today’s nine-race card features plenty of competitive contests, culminating in the JCSA Almaseef Cup. The card begins with a fillies’ maiden over 1400m. Mostakmelah and Alamya have both run twice and finished second twice and they could well fight out the finish to the opener. Hadd Alhayaam, a daughter of Flashy Bull, looks a newcomer to keep an eye on. Race two is a maiden for locally-bred horses, run over 1400m. Newcomer Ssolejaan, who runs in the red silks of HRH Prince Faisal Bin Khaled Bin Abdulaziz, looks of interest with Wigberto Ramos in the saddle. Weh’bee is a son of 2013 Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom, but hasn’t managed to win in 11 starts so far. However, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get off the mark at some point this season. The following contest is a 1600m open race for locally-bred fillies. Bint Farhh makes her reappearance here and, as the highest-rated in this contest, looks the one to beat. She may be vulnerable on her first outing of the season though and the Lucas Gaitan-trained Arrumaisaa, who won impressively over 1400m last time out, might be able to make her race fitness tell. Race four is a 0-85 handicap over 1600m. December wasn’t disgraced when finishing sixth in the Ta’if Derby last weekend and should appreciate this drop in class. While he has a wide draw in stall 15 to overcome, this Semper Fortis gelding could be up to the task in the hands of Luis Morales. Another maiden comes next, this one for locally-bred fillies over 2000m. Many of the 18 fillies in this field have already had many chances to get off the mark. Tahaady has had less chances than most, after only five starts last season and she showed significant promise on the third of those, when staying on strongly to finish a close-up third over 1600m. This step up in trip should suit and there should be more to come this season from this daughter of Include. Next up is a contest for horses that have won between one and three races in the past. A full field of 18 will line up over the 2000m and it looks another competitive heat. Monsieur Jumbo, once trained in the UK by Kevin Ryan, has been a revelation in Ta’if this season, winning twice and placing three times from six starts. The four-year-old should once again go well again but may be hampered by a very wide draw in 17. Mohaya got off the mark on his third start over 1600m last month and there should be more to come now stepping up in trip. Race seven is a 0-60 handicap for Arabian horses over 2000m. Yaroob stands out in this field, having showed a game attitude to win on KSA debut last time out. That came over 1400m but he looked to hit the line strongly and may be capable of making it two wins from two starts in the hands of Abdullah Alkhamis. The penultimate race of the day is another handicap for Arabian horses, this one for those rated 60-85, run over 2000m. Shibl Nemr has run consistently in four starts this season, including when finishing second over this trip two weeks ago. Nayar Athbah is an infrequent winner, with only two wins from 25 starts, but the Mohammed Khalaf-trained colt did manage to win on his last start over this trip and could be dangerous stepping back up to 2000m. Today’s finale is the SAR150,000 JCSA Almaseef Cup, run over 2000m. Aan Alawaan, Mayhamah, Akho Mobaary, Aljamaanee and Badr Alaelya’a are all rated in the 90s and are high class performers given their ideal conditions. Badr Alaelya’a won a JCSA Challenge earlier this month and might be the one to beat from a draw in stall one, but perhaps the most interesting runner is the once-raced Mashmookh, who streaked clear to win on debut in Riyadh last November and, while he hasn’t been seen since, he looked a potential future star that day.
