This time of the year it’s better to keep it simple - like a sweet summer dress in any length you desire. It doesn’t matter if it’s long or super short or a knee-length, or all of the above. We suggest you to pack at least three dresses for different occasions: one for the beach, another for the yacht and yet another for a night out. Turn heads day and night.

North American
Junior& Young Rider Championships BY JACKIE FREUNDLICH-MCFARLAND
Top: The North American Junior Team Gold Medalists from Zone 2 with Chef D’Equipe Ralph Caristo.
T
he FEI / Adequan North American Junior and Young Rider Championships, presented by Gotham North, is the premier equestrian competition in North America for ages 14-21. Riders come from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, and Guatemala to vie for team and individual FEI medals in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines of show jumping, dressage, eventing and the FEI World Equestrian Games disciplines of reining and endurance. The competition is run under rules of the FEI (Federation Equestre Internationale) and is considered a significant stepping-stone for aspiring equestrians. The show jumping aspect is run in a championship format, similar to the Olympics. Day One is a speed class with scores carrying over into the Individual competitions on Days Two and Three. Day Two is a team competition, where each rider represents a team (in this case a Zone) and each team is made up of three or four members. The course is ridden two times in rotation by team and the worst score is dropped, unless the team only has three riders, then each score counts. After tallying the total number of faults, the team with the lowest number earns the Gold Medal. Individual medals are the pursuit on Day Three. The top 25 scoring riders over the previous days compete over a fourth round, then the top fifteen return for the fifth and
final round. Two age divisions participate at two fence heights— Junior (ages 14-18) at 1.4m and Young Rider (ages 16-21), at 1.5m.
DAY ONE: SPEED The Show Jumping schedule had to be adjusted when after just three competitors rode Wednesday’s course, a rather nasty storm cruised in. Management jumped into action with a new schedule and the class resumed this morning at 8:00 am Thursday. The water jump was a factor for quite a few from toes in the tub to refusals and unfortunate dismounts. Even the liverpool caught a few by surprise, with rails falling and horses stopping. Overall the Richard Jeffrey courses were challenging but not overwhelming and set to specifications.
DAY TWO: NORTH AMERICAN JUNIOR TEAMS Despite a downpour halfway through the class, the four riders representing Zone 2, with Ralph Caristo as the Chef D’Equipe, continued to ride strong to win the tenth Gold Medal for their Zone in the history of the event. Charlotte Jacobs (17 yrs old), Kira Kerkorian (14 yo), Katherine Strauss (15 yo) and Lillie Keenan (15 yo) finished with a total of only 9 faults. Impressively the three-member Zone 5 (IL, IN, KY, MI, OH) Team earned the Silver Medal with no drop score, and a total of
22 [ equlifestyle.com ]

20 faults. One member of this Zone 5 Team, Abigail McArdle, winner on Day One, rode two clean rounds on Day Two as well, meaning three rounds with no faults at all.
DAY TWO: NORTH AMERICAN YOUNG RIDER TEAMS The Young Riders competed under the lights. Richard Jeffrey created a difficult but appropriate course encouraging riders to have a well thought out plan. With sixteen entries riding twice, a total of 32 rounds, only four rode without a fault. Chef Caristo collected his eleventh Gold Medal with Zone 2. “Our fearless leader,” claimed seventeen-year-old Team Member Mattias Tromp. Tromp teamed up with Meg O’Mara (18 yo), Lydia Ulrich (18 yo) and Callie Smith (18 yo) for the win. The Silver Medal Young Rider Team had only three riders from combined zones, Navona Gallegos (21 yo), Kaitlin Campbell (20 yo) and Katie Fox (18 yo). Campbell rode like a professional when piloting a young horse that had never competed under the lights around a 1.5m course. The pair went clean in the third round.
OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUALS ON THE FINAL DAY OF NAJYRC After five challenging courses, Junior division Gold Medalist Abigail McArdle and her nine year old mare “Cosma 20” had no rails, no time Top Left: Hannah Von Heidegger riding Candlelight VD Warande (Zone 10), tied for 5th in the Junior Rider Individual Medals.

faults, in short they were perfect. Adding a bit of excitement, “Kachina” (Charlotte Jacobs) and “Zubantos” (Shawn Casady) were tied with four faults after five rounds. Going first in the tie-breaking jump-off, Jacobs knew she had to go for it. “I show against Shawn a lot and I know he is fast. So I took a gamble and had one down,” she explained. Casady did clinch the Silver medal with a clean and tidy jump-off ride, Jacobs the Bronze. At the start of Round Four in the Young Rider Division, Mattias Tromp had a small lead over Callie Smith, Tromp had trouble, not his best day, and accumulated a number of faults in the final rounds. Sitting fifth, Kilian McGrath and her mount “Salerno” were the only pair to not drop a rail, finishing with just one time fault in Round Four. When it came down to the final round—less than one point separated the top two, McGrath had 16.92 and Smith 16 faults overall. McGrath finished with six faults, leaving the door open for Smith to have a rail, but not two. However it was a Silver day for Smith. Too speedy at the end of the course, she had two rails at the final two fences. Gold Medalists McArdle and McGrath both appreciated the opportunity to compete at this prestigious event. McGrath summed it up, “I’ve only dreamed of actually winning a Gold Medal. I was shocked when I had won. I asked Karen (Healey, Ched D’Equipe) if it was real!”.

Stubbs & Wootton TRADITIONAL ELEGANCE WITH CONTEMPORARY FLAIR
Michael Bastian in recent years have undoubtedly contributed to this goal. Frequently worn by celebrities and royalty, a pair of velvet slippers is the perfect touch of casual charm with contemporary elegance. These stylish slip-ons are only available at Stubbs & Wootton boutiques in Palm Beach, Southampton and New York, or may be purchased online. stubbsandwootton.com

ARTISTIC, LUXURIOUS AND COMFORTABLE, velvet evening slippers are simply a must-have accessory. This shoe style is nothing new. In the nineteenth century, Prince Albert made the style so popular that they received the nickname still often employed today “Prince Alberts.” However it’s not to the prince that the new generation of fans owes the pleasure of wearing these exceptional and comfy shoes, but to Percy Steinheart. Steinhart was working for Citicorp (now Citigroup) when he decided to do something more diverse and extravagant with those velvet slippers that all of his friends in Palm Beach were wearing. He located a manufacturing plant in Spain, and in 1993 founded Stubbs & Wootton. The company specializes in luxurious handmade slippers for men and women, designed to suit your style from morning to night. Great with a casual morning look like jeans or shorts, or with a more elegant dinner outfit, such as a pair of fine trousers or even a tuxedo. Their shape may be classic a slipper, but the designs embroidered on top of each pair are unique. That is the brand’s vintage yet contemporary essence, and its unique positioning, which has created tremendous success for the company, as well as made an impact on fashion. Steinharts’ design ideas come from a variety of inspirations: the ‘street,’ Scottish royalty, dragons, swords, skulls… And if want to have your own unique pair of slippers, you can personalize a pair with initials in silver, gold or colored thread. Popular with his contemporaries, Steinhart sought to expand the brand to a younger audience. Collaborations with designers like Marc Jacobs and

A NEW BOUTIQUE IN LA JOLLA
OFFICINE PANERAI, the Italian high-end watchmaker, has once again expanded its North American retail presence with a new boutique in La Jolla, CA. Located in the heart of Prospect Street across from the Pacific Ocean and the renowned La Valencia Hotel, this new boutique joins Panerai’s existing location in Beverly Hills to further serve Panerai’s loyal clients and customers in Southern California. All of the new Panerai boutiques showcase an Italian-style atmosphere, designed according to the company’s recently launched retail concept, unveiled at Officine Panerai’s new boutique on the via Montenapoleone in Milan last year. The interior follows a simple and classic design, made to enhance the store’s bright, transparent features and nautical accents. In honor of the historic association between Officine Panerai and the Italian Navy, the shapes and materials used throughout the boutiques resemble the world of the sea: simple lines alternate with wave-like structures. All materials, many of which have been imported from Italy, were carefully selected while taking inspiration from the brand’s Florentine roots. Inside each boutique, a large wall clock features one of the more distinctive features of a Panerai timepiece: the “sandwich” structure
of the legendary dial: two superimposed surfaces enclose a layer of Super-LumiNova®, used to make the index markers and numerals more visible even in badly lit conditions. Panerai’s 925 square ft boutique in La Jolla is situated among other high-end retail destinations at 1137 Prospect Street. It will offer a state-of-theart service center, as well as a selection of limited edition watches, with a particular focus on the models fitted with movements that are exclusively manufactured by Officine Panerai. Panerai-La Jolla joins existing U.S. boutiques in Bal Harbour, Palm Beach, Boca Raton, New York City and Beverly Hills. The opening of this new California location represents an important stage in the development of the exclusive world distribution network for Panerai timepieces. La Côte d’
Azur
A yacht escapade through the French Riviera (Côte d’Azur) sounded like the perfect holiday, but with only nine travel days, and nine destinations to visit, the adventure needed to cruise along. Just nine days to explore that glamorous shore that I had seen so beautifully depicted in pictures. To make the most out of my time in the Mediterranean I had to make every second count. Nine days to be bedazzled by the forty-three miles of wonders that lay between Saint-Tropez and Monaco. By Suzette Celaya

fter a very long flight, and several hours of traveling, I finally arrived at Saint- Tropez prepared to have the time of my life. I had packed the perfect attire for such an alluring destination. I was ready to relax and enjoy. The journey was about to begin.
SUNSET IN SAINT-TROPEZ
SAINT TROPEZ: A CAPTIVATING CITY
THE EXCLUSIVE PAMPELONNE BAY As I got on board of the stunning yacht that would take me to my next stopping point, the soft glimmer of the morning sun made for an ideal brunch setting as we traveled to the bay. As soon as we docked, I headed straight to Nikki Beach for the day. The most exclusive club on the bay, and it was definitely on my bucket list. I had been planning on this stop long before the journey began. What a blissful experience. In the company of the most glamorous celebrities, with a glass of bubbly in my hand, I thoroughly enjoyed this exclusive and exquisite resort. As the glorious day came to an end, turned out the night was just as gorgeous. So far the French Rivera with its beaches and legendary sites was all I had hoped for and more.

I arrived to Saint-Tropez just as the sun was setting over the port, turning every street into a catwalk of amazing beach outfits. Determined to make every second count, I soaked up this opportunity to relish the Mediterranean joie de vivre. I decided to lodge at the Byblos SaintTropez hotel. From my suite, I could see the wonders of the Mediterranean coast. I took a glorious walk on the town to discover all the venues. The marina was filled with a spectacle of yachts set against a vanilla sky—beautiful. I can see why the celebrities adore this port, making this destination a must for all the people that, like me, simply adore visiting sensational destinations. The
astonishing sunset beamed on the beach, a picturesque memory that will last forever.

THE ALLURE OF CANNES Another spot I dreamed of when planning my trip was Cannes. Wanting to look my best at this glamorous locale, I brought some of my most sensational wardrobe pieces for this particular day and night on the French Riviera. The star treatment began as soon as I arrived at the Martinez Hotel, located on the notorious La Croisette Boulevard. The most exclusive designer brands are across the street. I couldn’t resist and spent several

on the port shore framed by the soothing waters of the bay, it has a dash of the 19th century Côte d’Azur. The day passed leisurely with short walks in lush tropical gardens and bike rides through eucalyptus woods. The scenery changed like chapters in a glorious book of photographs—mposing cliffs, luscious vineyards, groves of fruit trees and captivating coastline. As I look through my photo album, I remember all the exquisite and peaceful moments in Porquerolles. That night, I enjoyed an evening of music at one of the many jazz clubs you can find across the bay. I soaked up the French tropical weather while sipping a lovely glass of wine from the region. Soon it was time to return to the boat and rest up for the next day’s adventure.

hours shopping, finding exquisite pieces that are simply must-haves. Back in my superb suite, I soak in the tub to relax before going to the Palme d’Or restaurant to savor a classic Mediterranean feast. As night falls, the city leaves the chic casual day look behind and transforms into a social scene of class and refinement. The ideal evening to premiere the latest additions to my wardrobe, I steal some ‘wow’ glances, where everyone comes to see and be seen. It was a night to remember, just as I had envisioned.
THE STILLNESS OF ÎLES DE LÉRINS A historical palace overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the InterContinental Carlton Cannes cultivates this refined atmosphere where yesterday’s charm and spirit mix with today’s expectations.
For me the fourth day was declared a day of rest. We left Cannes and headed to Îles de Lérins. The stillness helped me to relax and unwind. However the day passed quickly with delicious meals; lovely walks along the seashore and some easy going snorkeling. There’s a bit of interesting history about this place. Below the 17th century Fort de l’Ile is where the unlucky man immortalized in The Man in the Iron Mask
was imprisoned. Glad to be free in the 21st century, after a light dinner the yacht prepared to embark towards our next destination, Cap d’Antibes.
THE MEDIEVAL ENCHANTMENT OF CAP D’ANTIBES As I disembark on the Cap d’Antibes peninsula, I felt as I had been transported to a medieval French village with a touch of modernity and a flair for the high-end lifestyle. Taking a walking journey across the peninsula my favorite place was the Musée Picasso, located at the Grimaldi castle. A unique collection of his work, the artist lived at the castle for a period of time. When the night set its cover above us, it was truly one of the most beautiful sights. I decided to dine at Les Pêcheurs hotel. The seafood was fabulous. I ended the evening with a glass of champagne. Tomorrow would be yet another day full of surprises.

of the French Riviera. The sandy beaches and quaint town full of cafés was charming. Next was Nice, a bustling city with a fabulous University, great art galleries, charming restaurants, lovely markets—I could see why it is a top pick among tourists. At sunset I strolled along the Promenade des Anglais. The coastal scene once again took my breath away. The beautiful buildings set against the colors of the blue sky— it was so elegant and alluring, it was hard for me to say good-bye, but my next destination was waiting. My nine day motto was to make every second count…
A MAJESTIC CAP FERRAT Cap Ferrat was my second to last stop before Monaco, my final destination. Aboard the boat, we nibbled on snacks and enjoyed a drink as we traveled calmly across the Cap Ferrat peninsula.
FINAL DESTINATION: MONACO The charm and opulence of Monaco made me feel like royalty. The city simply exudes glamour, from the marina with its impressive yachts to the legendary casinos. The extraordinary architecture, intimate spas, incredible boutiques, restaurants… I kept turning slowly in a circle to soak it all in. I decided to stay at the Hôtel de Paris, in the heart of Monaco. I shopped, dined and gambled a bit. My final destination was beyond delightful. The memories will linger, and I am already planning my return to the French Riviera. Soon I was walking in to the Grand Hôtel du Cap Ferrat. Yet another divine destination, I did some splashing in the dashing pool and basked in the sun, the weather was ideal. Savoring the experience of this gorgeous setting, I knew my time in the Mediterranean was coming to a close. Surrounded by cliffs and deep blue sea, the architecture again was breathtaking. After a delightful dinner at La Réserve de Beaulieu’s Restaurant des Rois, certainly fit for a king and queen, I head back to my hotel. Monaco and the end of my adventure await.

NATIONS CUP
HICKSTEAD, GREAT BRITAIN
The Irish produced the shock of the season when beating crack sides from Germany and France to win the seventh leg of the FEI Nations Cup™ 2012 series at Hickstead, Great Britain. As always, the Hickstead fences took their toll, but faults were spread all around the track set by Great Britain’s Bob Ellis - the man who will build the courses for the forthcoming London Olympic Games at Greenwich Park. BY LOUISE PARKES. PHOTOS: KIT HOUGHTON/FEI.

13EQU_Hickstead.indd 36
I
n the opening round, the formidable open water, located early on the track at fence 4, took its toll, and the line of fences that included a triple bar to a double of verticals followed by a big, square oxer also proved influential. But it was the double at fence three that was a major troublespot in the second round, claiming three of the French amongst its many victims.
ZERO SCORES The teams that eventually filled the top three spots all completed round one on a zero score, with the British next best carrying eight. Sweden, Belgium and Switzerland were all on level pegging
with 16 on the board, while the Dutch were lying last with 20 when the only clear for Rob Ehrens’ side came from anchorman Albert Voorn (“Tobalio”). It seemed possible that the Irish would be overwhelmed by the quality of their rivals second time out. After all the French side included Olympians Leprevost (“Topinambour”) and Kevin Staut (“Reveur de Hutebise”) along with the very-much-on-form Eugenie Angot (“Old Chap Tame”) and Aymeric de Ponnat (“Armitages Boy”). And the German side was just as intimidating, with Philipp Weishaupt (“Catoki”) joined by Ludger Beerbaum (“Chiara”) and Marco Kutscher (“Cornet Obolensky”) along with Holger Wulschner (“Cefalo”). But that wasn’t going to make an impression on the boys in green.
23/07/12 17:13
Splaine had selected four riders with a real hunger to prove their worth. And although Shane Breen double-faulted second time out with “Cos I Can,” Richie Moloney produced one of only two doubleclears on the day from the 10 year old “Ahorn van de Zuuthoeve” before Darragh Kerins picked up just four faults with Lisona to keep the pressure on the French. German chances faded with single second-round errors from both Weishaupt and Beerbaum, and when the anchor partnership of Kutchser and his grey stallion hit the very last fence then that had to be counted in order to drop the 12 collected by Wulschner at his second attempt, so their chances were gone. It was the superb second round clear from Clem McMahon that clinched it for the winning side, the Irishman refusing to be discouraged by the decision to retire “Pacino” after three fences down in the first round, and returning to show just how good this relatively inexperienced eight-year-old stallion can be. French pathfinder Angot produced the second of the double-clear performances of the day, but Staut and de Ponnat each lowered a fence so Leprevost would have to be clear to force a jump-off now. And when the poles fell, she retired as she could not improve on her country’s eight-fault tally.
SLIGHTLY IMPROVED Despite the satisfaction of securing only their third victory in the 65year history of the Nations Cup of Great Britain, the Irish however have only slightly improved their position on the FEI Nations Cup™ leaderboard after this success. They go into the last leg on their home ground with just a 0.5 point lead over Belgium who are now in bottom spot, while Germany remains at the top of the table with a 10-point advantage over France in second while Britain holds third. Top: Richie Moloney (IRL) riding "Ahorn van de Zuuthoeve" who rode a double clear for the winning Irish team. Middle: Tina Fletcher (GBR) riding "Hello Sailor" the best of the British riders.

Man of style expressions
I provide my tailored fit, as well as my typical Scottish style to a new clientele, while sharing with the world the ability to make garments using traditional fabrics and style that define the British approach to fashion.
Peter Johnston The charming Brit that conquered Saks
A brilliant career dedicated to the design of tailored suits, as well as a command of British flair, are just two of the reasons that Saks Fifth Avenue chose to hire Peter Johnston as the manager of the Saks traditional bespoke suit collection. BY Suzette celAYA.
ce the age of ten, Peter Johnson always knew he wanted to be involved with fashion, fabrics and creativity. In 1995, after getting his Master’s degree, he ventured into the design development of some of his country’s most important brands— Kilgour among them—and from that moment on his career ascended.
HIS SIGNATURE BRIT STYLE was the key element that Saks considered before inviting the designer to launch a collection of bespoke suits, ready-to-wear garments and accessories in association with the brand. The result: unique pieces made in classy British patterns with a modern twist, an essential addition to the high fashion aficionado’s collection.
sing demand. This creates an atmosphere of prestige and exclusivity for each and every garment that bears his name. For one of Johnson’s custommade outfits, prepare to spend about eight thousand dollars, the average cost of one of his creations.
JOHNSTON ALSO DESIGNS SCOTTISH KILTS. So to honor the designer’s Scottish heritage, Saks conceived a white-and-black pattern to create a tartan worthy of. When designing a custom tartan, Johnston used the Saks pattern or the client’s preferred clan pattern.
EXCLUSIVITY has been one of the defining points of Johnston’s creations; he has a strict appointment-only policy. To fulfill the client requests for the designer, Saks works under a monthly planning system in which Johnston travels to the most important fashion destinations in the United States to personally look after the increa-
“WORKING ALONG WITH A LUXURIOUS and iconic brand, worldly known for its collections and collaboration, presents a very impressive opportunity. I provide my tailored fit, as well as my typical Scottish style to a new clientele, while sharing with the world the ability to make gar-
ments using traditional fabrics and style that define the British approach to fashion,” stated Johnston, as he highlighted the quality of the brand as well as his own skill to refresh the vintage looks of the classic bespoke suit.
EVERY SUIT IS HANDMADE according to the specific requirements and measurements of the customer (the traditional definition of bespoke), and as Johnston says, the process is the following: “The client comes, he is measured and chooses the color for his suit; then a mold is created on paper. Three fit trials take place before the suit is complete; the full result of this process might take up to 10 or 12 weeks.” But, as with any luxury, it is well worth waiting for.

Creazioni, with its lively and elegant spirit, knows how to put some colour and freshness into our living spaces.
T
he colorful and intriguing Creazioni brand, from the historic Italian furniture manufacturer Silik, was back once more at the famous Salone del Mobile di Milano. This year the brand world premiered some all-new contemporary products and brought back time-tested favorites with intriguing new finishes and fabrics. In fact, the selection of fabrics from international designers like Ken Scott and Christian Lacroix, and the company’s own internal research into innovative finishes allows them to personalize all the products in the catalogue according to the customers’ needs and tastes. The design-oriented furnishing solutions are the embodiment of fun, color, elegance, and style. With a new, photo-rich catalogue and an innovative stand that effectively communicated the playful side of modernly interpreted classic furniture, Creazioni was a total success. “We are seeing great results for the Creazioni brand, at a worldwide level—said Cristina Gattei, CEO of Silik. The public really
understands the fun spirit and elegant forms that our products communicate. We are sure that the products we presented in Milan will be a hit.” The vibrant and entertaining Creazioni stand was set up almost like a 1950’s comic book, with whimsical designs adorning the walls that mixed with the tangible pieces of furniture. This carefully planned backdrop was the perfect way to present the brand’s fanciful and imaginative pieces. Furnishing solutions for the dining room, living, room, and bedroom shared the stand and were set to impress. The star of the dining room was the new table, making its world premier. This dining table is the perfect juxtaposition of distinguished classic form and lighthearted modern finish. It features two sculptures supporting the wooden table top, combined with a surprisingly contemporary yellow crackle finish. Several Francy chairs, with their comfortable seats and glossy white lacquered iron legs with brass tips, accompanied the table. The dining area also featured the all-new Arianna four-door sideboard with its gracefully curving underside and matte Indian Pink finish. The double Cherubino bed, with its slightly upholstered headboard, is indicative of how much fun the bedroom can be with Creazioni. The romantic headboard and base can be covered in a myriad of cheerful fabrics. The version shown at Milan featured a glossy green finish. Next to the bed you could find the Bertino bedside table in its two-drawer version with intriguing curled steel handles. Those looking for armchairs were able to see three different options: the unique Gioconda swivel armchair with its particular steel base, the retro Lola armchair, and the Giulia armchair with its decorative buttons on the backrest. The gypsy-inspired character of the three-seater Peppino sofa with brown and grey tones and the famous Megatizzi bench with rich button-tufted work on the high backrest that features a central classic-style decoration on the top, enriched the seating offer. The Creazioni stand was also home to creative products like the small Funghetto table, the Ernestina console—shown in a matte curry finish—, the Susanna bookcase with finely decorated details, and the Berto chest of drawers with eye-catching design. Even fun furnishing accessories like the Piera snail and Lucy owl were on display. stile-creazioni.com

Del Mar Racetrack A Very Brief History
The summer racing season at Del Mar, managed and promoted by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, draws tens of thousands of fans from around the state as well as the country. Known as one of the world’s greatest race meetings, surrounded by superb restaurants, resorts and the Pacific Ocean, we present a brief history of this southern California icon.
13EQU-OK_Del_Mar.indd 54
The rich and famous have frequented the Del Mar Racetrack since Bing Crosby first pitched the idea of a seaside track to a number of his Hollywood cronies in 1937.

O
n yet another sunny Socal afternoon seventy-five years ago, July 3, 1937 to be exact, the original laid-back Californian himself, Bing Crosby, stood at a turnstile collecting tickets for his new seaside racetrack, Del Mar. Now bitten by the racing bug, Crosby and a bunch of his Hollywood buddies (among them Pat O’Brien, Oliver Hardy and Gary Cooper) hatched the idea for a horse palace by the ocean where you could play all day, party all night and leave the cares of the world behind. That first day, more than 15,000 came for a look. Word got around fast as more than 18,000 showed up by the second afternoon. And the Hollywood connection continued for decades at Del Mar with a parade of show biz personalities including Mickey Rooney, Ava Gardner, Dick Powell, Joan Blondell, Edward G. Robinson, Red Skelton, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz and Jimmy Durante. The Santa Fe Railroad launched a special racetrack train from Los Angeles to Del Mar that carried Hollywood stars and, at times, laterunning horses. It became a Del Mar tradition for the fans in the grandstand to start cheering when they saw the train turn the bend just before the station. Out on the track itself, Del Mar had its share of magic moments. In 1938, Del Mar hosted the historic match race between the American handicap champion Seabiscuit and the South American import Ligaroti. The race pitted Bing Crosby and Lin Howard against Lin’s father, Charles S. Howard, famous owner of Seabiscuit and a director of the Del Mar Turf Club. It was a $25,000 winner-takeall contest that drew 20,000 to the track and was heard coast-tocoast on the NBC radio network. At the end of a ferocious battle that saw the horses trading head bobs and the riders trading whip

Some competitors spend weeks and months designing their masterpieces. All race fan beauties are encouraged to wear a little (and sometimes big) something to accent their outfit.
slashes, “The Biscuit” won by a nose in 1:49, breaking the nine-furlong track record by an amazing four seconds. Del Mar was also the place where John Longden became the world’s “winningest” rider on Labor Day of 1956 when he rode to his 4,871 first-place finisher to surpass the Englishman Sir Gordon Richards. Fourteen Labor Days later in 1970, Longden’s title was topped at Del Mar, this time to a tiny Texan named Bill Shoemaker when he earned victory number 6,033 aboard Dares J. Present to shake The Shoe’s hand in the winner’s circle was Longden himself. The Del Mar Racetrack is now a fertile proving ground for many of the nation’s best horses and horsemen. Champions race at the pristine southern California location each summer, trained by Hall of Fame conditioners like Ron McAnally, Richard Mandella, Neil Drysdale and Bob Baffert and ridden by world-class jockeys, including Hall of Famer Mike Smith, Garrett Gomez, Alex Solis and Rafael Bejarano.
In 1991, the track instituted its richest and most prestigious event ever, the $1,000,000 Pacific Classic. The Grade I feature run at the classic American distance of a mile and one quarter quickly became one of the country’s top summer prizes, annually drawing many of the best race horses in training. Del Mar made history once more in 2010 when Thoroughbred superstar, Zenyatta won her third straight Clemente L. Hirsch Stakes and ran her perfect record to 18 for 18 in front of a spirited 32,536 fans. And in 2011, Del Mar hosted another successful season, presenting the fifth match race in track history, Battle of the Exes, as well as its first gourmet food truck festival. Track traditions evolve over time and one of the most notable traditions at Del Mar is the not-to-be-missed hats on Opening Day. Each year the track holds its annual “One & Only Truly Fabulous Hat Contest.” Even if they don’t participate in the contest, a majority of the crowd honors the tradition by donning a hat on Opening Day. Another tradition began in 2009, when Del Mar first introduced the Miss Cougar Del Mar Contest. Self-proclaimed “cougars” took delight in the opportunity to compete for honors and a crown. Inspired by the mile and one-half Cougar II Handicap, the day’s non-racing festivities are now a well-known event. The buzz Bing started seventy-five years ago remains true to this day. One of the best places to be a on a sunny southern California summer afternoon is at the Del Mar Racetrack, watching some of the most gifted horses and horsemen in the world try to reach the finish line first. dmtc.com

Discovery consists in seeing what others have seen, but thinking what no one else has thought. This philosophy is a daily inspiration for the head chef and staff of Pierre Gagnaire. Gagnaire’s eponymous restaurant is located at the resplendent Balzac Hotel in Paris. New culinary creations arise from combining traditional cooking techniques with original and unconventional ideas that provide a unique twist to high cuisine. Pierre Gagnaire abides by the doctrine that to be truly innovative it is essential to learn the traditional fundamentals of cooking first. Respect the past, and then discover the liberty to take those ingredients and follow your instincts. After obtaining a very coveted three Michelin stars, the highest awarded, Gagnaire is known as a trendsetter in contemporary cooking. As if this honor wasn’t enough, Pierre Gagnaire has also been recognized for tearing down the long-established customs of French cuisine by mixing unorthodox flavors, textures and ingredients. This sense of modernism is what makes Pierre Gagnaire the ultimate place to enjoy an unforgettable dining experience. Imagine the delight of enjoying a thoroughly unique dinner only steps away from the Arc de Triomphe. The subtle lights that kindle the au-
burn shades of the restaurant radiate a very intimate and relaxed feeling. The ideal setting for conversation hours after dinner has concluded while you relish in the company you keep as well as a classic French dessert or glass of wine. Pamper your palate with an appetizing Oreiller d’ Herbes, aromatic herbs with a selection of young smoked vegetables, gruyere cheese of Garde and gascon ham, followed by a mouth-watering medallion of veal brushed over with fresh cream cheese, black Malabar pepper and curry herb deglazed with moscato d’Astio l’Aangostura. As a fitting conclusion to this luscious experience, we recommend the magnificent Bora vanilla soufflé with a scrumptious creamy sauce of pear with Marc de Gewürztraminer brandy. “I love creating themes, ambience and sensations,” says chef Gagnaire, when commenting on his menu, the canvas he uses to fashion new gastronomic delights. Oui, oui c’est vrai Pierre Gagnaire Paris offers a incomparable experience in French food, presenting traditional dishes in a new style that deligh the palate with every bite. 6, rue Balzac, 75008, Paris, France. pierre-gagnaire.com

Jaime Guerra Piedra
Born in 1963 in Mexico city, Jaime Guerra Piedra known as ‘The Mago’ started his career with the help of his father and grandfather. In the early days Jaime’s father taught him everything, his father in turn had been taught by an Andaluz rider/instructor Francisco Jiménez. It was not at all easy in the beginning. Jaime remembers falling of 13 times in one day. Determined to overcome his fear and succeed, he persevered. At the age of 12 Jaime started in at the children’s jumper level, then moved up to juniors and competed in his first grand prix by the age of 16. By age 18 he was Continental Junior Champion. Also at the tender age of 18, Jaime traveled to California and to work with ‘horse whisperer’ Gene Lewis. Through this experience Jaime learned to
understand how the horse thinks and reacts. With this as a part of his ride, he went on to compete at Young Riders, including Chicago and Indianapolis, three Pan-American Games, two Olympics—Barcelona and Atlanta—, and three World Equestrian Games—The Hague, Aachen and Kentucky. Jaime started riding for Neil Jones Equestrian, a wellknown European sales barn based in Belgium, over a decade ago and is now ranked 112th on the World Ranking List. Not an easy task when working in a stable where horses he competes on are often sold. Jaime competes all over Europe and recent wins include the leading Showjumper of The Year at the British Horse Show of The Year, The Coca Cola Grand Prix on the CSI*** Sunshine Tour in Spain and the Quick Star Trophy at the CSI**** Fontainebleau— certainly a sweet victory in Fontainebleau as he won the trophy on the son of Quick Star, Omega Star. With his success this season, Jaime has been selected to represent Mexico at the Olympic Games in London. Along with his international show jumping schedule, Jaime trains aspiring young riders at Neil Jones Equestrian. Over the years he’s schooled a successful group such as Annie Cook, Cecilie Tofte, Mavis Spencer and also working with Neil Jones Equestrian’s second rider Lorenzo De Luca. Annie Cook competed and won at the CSI Salzburg Indoor, represented the USA in a Nations
Cup as well as earned great prizes on this summer’s Young Riders Euro Tour. Another northern Californian, Alec Lawler, will work with Jaime this summer after a successful tour in Calgary at Spruce Meadows. Expanding their experience and knowledge by working with Jaime as well as with their own trainers, is an important aspect of these riders development. Neil Jones Equestrian offers riders the option of training with or without their own horses. Equi-lease was created for this reason and has been successful at specific international shows where riders can come from all over the world to train and compete in the heart of Europe without having to own the horse. Numerous top horses have come from Jaime and Neil Jones Equestrian such as “Taunus,” bought by Francie Steinwedell Carvin, competed at this year’s FEI World Cup Finals, “Kalvinretto” sold to Caroline Lynn and “Cavaola” sold to the Chad family. “Avenzio 3” ridden by Taizo Sugitani of Japan ranked 10th in the World Equestrian Games Kentucky. Decades after his time as a young rider, Jaime’s equestrian career continues to climb to new heights as well as the horses and riders he works with at Neil Jones Equestrian.

THE ITALIAN
Riviera We all dream about escaping from quotidian living and planning a great escape – one with all the extravagances and total relaxation. An escape from the ordinary is just what we have in store for you with the itinerary by yacht below. By Jacob von Zimmermann
13Equ_Italia.indd 60

Set on a verdant hillside overlooking the picture-perfect harbour of Portofino, with its luxury yachts bobbing at anchor, Hotel Splendido is one of Italy’s most glamorous retreats.
GENOA: ALTHOUGH FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF GENOA MAY NOT ALWAYS BE THE MOST FAVOURABLE, THE CHARM OF THIS SEAPORT CITY SOON BECOMES APPARENT WHEN PROPERLY EXPLORED. THE VERY HEART OF GENOA’S OLD TOWN AREA IS A GOOD PLACE TO WALK AROUND AND BOASTS A SERIES OF NARROW ALLEYWAYS, ANCIENT CHURCHES AND RENAISSANCE-STYLE PALACES.
A
s the French Riviera winds its way east beyond Monaco and over into Italy, discover a land full of exotic, red carpet pleasure with a mix of traditional fishing villages and renaissance towns.
ARRIVE IN GENOA Genoa, the hilly gateway to the Ligurian coast, is filled with curiosities. After boarding the yacht and unpacking your bags, it is worth stepping back onto dry land to
explore this former maritime republic, currently recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Renaissance and Baroque palaces stand side by side in Genoa’s old quarter, built with maritime wealth from all quarters of Genoa’s republic: Liguria, Piedmont, Sardinia and Corsica. These palaces are surviving relics of the city’s fascinating history and under their stucco works and frescoed ceilings you will find not only world class museums but also, in true Italian style, some of the best shopping in the world.
POSTCARDS FROM PORTOFINO The morning’s cruise from Genoa to Portofino takes just a few hours, but the locales couldn’t be more different—from the bustle of a provincial capital to a fishing village preserved in time. The picturesque postcard of Portofino— its pastel-colored houses surround by a tiny harbor against a backdrop of pine trees and turquoise waters—is stunningly alluring.
This is where Richard Burton proposed to Elizabeth Taylor. In Portofino you will find luxury shops hidden in old stone houses, a world-class hotel in a restored monastery and large yachts fighting for space with modest fishing boats. Portofino remains, at heart, an old world holiday destination.
CLIFFS OF PORTO VENERE The passage to Porto Venere is the most scenic cruise of the entire itinerary. Take your time and hug the coast, as you will be passing some of Italy’s most iconic seaside villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, which are known collectively as Cinque Terre (the Five Lands). These five villages, now with UNESCO World Heritage status, are built into the dramatic Ligurian cliffs, defying the impossibly steep terrain with endless terraces that slope down towards tiny harbors. Cruise leisurely past or walk the Sentiero Azzurro trail until you reach Porto Venere.

Porto Venere is an equally picturesque town that you can admire from your yacht while anchored in the bay, known as the Gulf of Poets. Perhaps contemplate a swim here, as Lord Byron once did.
FALLING FOR FLORENCE Though Viareggio is itself a beautiful Renaissance town, it makes a perfect gateway into the Tuscan interior and, most importantly, Florence. Your captain will organize a car to meet the yacht and whisk you through the Tuscan countryside to Florence, a journey of about two hours. Alternatively, a helicopter transfer from Pisa can be arranged so you can see the iconic leaning tower on the way. Florence stands as testament to some of the world’s greatest works of art and architecture; it is a living museum of the Renaissance that is simply not to be missed.
Tuscany is known for its gorgeous landscapes, its rich artistic legacy and its influence on high culture. Tuscany is regarded as the true birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.
A PASSAGE TO ELBA An overnight passage takes you 60 nautical miles south of the Italian Riviera and the mainland to join the leisurely pace of the Tuscan Archipelago. Awake on your fifth morning in Elba, the archipelago’s largest island, which is famed for its role in Napoleon’s exile. Today little has changed, however instead of forced relocation, many make their way to Elba by choice, yearning for its infinite empty beaches and coves, its quiet interior and ancient hill towns. The main town of Portoferraio is Elba’s capital, yet it is far from a metropolis and thus its old port is an attractive and quiet place to moor your yacht. The expanses of open water here are perfect for motorized watersports, such as jet skiing, waterskiing and wakeboarding, while under the surface there is an enormous diversity of sea life and coral waiting to be explored by divers. For those

seeking a less strenuous adventure, there is always an opportunity to relax on deck, sunbathe and swim.
PIPE DOWN AT PUNTA ALA Punta Ala is a familiar name to the Mediterranean yachting circuit. The marina attracts superyachts year-round and Yacht Club Punta Ala is well known for hosting regattas, even America’s Cup challenges. But for those looking for a respite from yachting, just a short distance away in South Tuscany’s beautiful rolling countryside lie L’Andana and La Badiola Estate—the perfect rural sanctuary. The story of Tenuta La Badiola began with Leopold II of Forraine, the grand duke of Tuscany, and today lies with the Moretti Family and restaurateur Alain Ducasse, a combination that has preserved the beauty of the original estate with a modern spa, award-winning restaurant and top hotel.
GLORIOUS GIGLIO The stunning island of Giglio resembles its bigger sister Elba, but is substantially smaller in size and attracts fewer crowds, making it even more appealing to those who want a peaceful retreat. With 17 miles of coast and only two coastal towns there are many beaches, coves and bays that are only accessible by boat, such as Cala Galdana and Cala degli Alberi. But the escapade won’t be confined entirely to the coast: a short distance inland from Porto Giglio, through the rugged granite and pine-wooded interior, rests the main town of Giglio Castello. This medieval place is perched defensively on the top of a hill with fortifications surrounding charming cobbled streets and winding alleys packed with seafood restaurants. Diners should be wary of enjoying too much Ansonaco (the local fortified wine).
PRANCING PORTO ERCOLE Argentario was a member of the Tuscan Archipelago until silt deposits caused it to be reclassified as a peninsula. Nevertheless, it contains all the defining features of a Tuscan island with perfect beaches, clear waters and a rugged interior. It is a popular destination for stylish Romans and Tuscans who flock either to Porto Santo Stefano on the north coast or Porto Ercole in the south. Both are lively and attractive harbor towns offering a wide range of bars and restaurants for those who dock their boats there.

The charm of Al Sorriso comes from the sumptuous blend of tastes and scents that bring life and intensity to every dish. Bring your banquet to its crescendo with a chestnut soufflé in an orange and juniper sauce—a favorite that is highly recommended by the Michelin guide. After dinner, relax on spacious leather sofas, in the warmth of the fireplace on cool nights, and treat yourself to some of the best vine selections in the world. Stroll through their preeminent wine cellar, with more than one thousand assorted wine labels, all painstakingly selected to illustrate the range and complexity of a product that comes from the area’s soil and sun. Lexus Hybrid Bike
EVERY NOW AND THEN you just need a little push to get to the top. With that in mind, the Japanese automaker Lexus designed a new line of hybrid bicycles. Usually associated with cars, the term ‘hybrid’ means that the vehicle is powered by several sources of energy. In this particular case, electric energy is combined to the traditional pedal force—as you pedal the bike integrates a small motor charge, putting some extra spin on the front wheel. The extra ‘energy’ helps the passenger endure long rides and avoid fatigue on the road. With this slick hybrid bike riding the roughest path will feel like gliding on air. Lexus stays true to the same principles in technology and functionality they use on their automobiles withn this new bicycle, aligning with the environment awareness that characterizes the brand. The vehicle works with a 240 W electric motor and a 25.9 V
lithium-ion battery pack that requires around two hours to charge completey. It also features a regenerative braking device that helps to recharge the battery. Featuring a frame finished in carbon fiber, the hybrid bike makes use of an automatic eightspeed internal gear system to enhance your riding experience without leaving any carbon footprint. The eco-friendly electric system is an advance that exceeds any other model developed to date. The design is modern and stylish, and satisfies the demanding standards Lexus sets for its vehicles. Although this sounds heavenly to those who love to ride as well as reduce, reuse and recycle, Lexus is still undecided about an official market launch and this beauty, so the Lexus Hybrid Bicycle is merely a prototype. We will keep our eyes out for this cool concept to become a reality, as it is an ideal option for getting around town in an ecofriendly fashion. lexus.com

Leica M9-P by Hermès
Fashion and photography are a match made in heaven. As homage to this union, Leica recently launched the M9-P Hermès edition. This new model combines the high technology of the photographic brand, with the exquisite luxury of the French fashion house. The result is a contemporary tool for those who demand the highest standards in image quality wrapped in the high craftsmanship that characterizes Hermès. The Leica M9-P is the third in a line of premium special editions of the M-System that will be created in collaboration with the wellknown Parisian name. Even with this modern makeover, the Leica signature details that have characterized the brand since its first edition are still intact. With a silver-chromed body and ocre Veau Swift calfskin details from body to shoulder strap, the special limited edition Leica M9-P ‘Edition Hermès’ is extraordinary in every respect. The exclusive leather trim looks
gorgeous and feels phenomenal, enhancing the experience of capturing that special moment. The German camera company launched two editions of the M9-P by Hermès, the first one includes the camera and a lens, with only 300 units available. The second one, created in honor of the former president of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas who passed away two years ago, is a limited edition with just 100 copies. This kit includes three optical lenses in addition to the camera. Both editions come with a camera belt, a beautiful Hermès handmade briefcase and a collector’s book. These elements are meant to transform an ordinary photographic instrument into a true object of desire and distinction. Each one is numbered according to the series of the chosen model, which adds an extra touch of exclusivity. Ideal for fashionistas, passionate photographers as well as collectors of fine items, we expect this series to be yet another successful union between Leica and Hermès. leica-camera.com

EDEL SCHAUB MOSS, CERTIFIED SOMMELIER
WE CANNOT DENY that the most sophisticated palates like to be seduced by opulent champagne, especially if the blend comes from grand cru vineyards. The production of sparkling wine was always considered as one of the finest feats from France. But how could Dom Pierre Pérignon develop champagne in 1690 when the “sparkling champagne” was already mentioned in English literature six years before the famous monk arrived in the French region? The truth is there is no evidence that the monk produced a single bottle of sparkling wine. Contrary to popular belief, Pérignon sought to eliminate the bubbles of wine. There is no record of Pérignon in the memoirs written by Jean Godinot in 1718, where the first vin mousseux is described. The famous sparkling was not only available in England long before champagne, but became so popular that playwrights mentioned it as early as 1676. Since the sixteenth century, the British delivered wine corked in glass bottles molded at high temperatures. These materials were superior to the French, produced in a stronger and more resistant container able to withstand the internal pressure of carbon dioxide. Clearly, the English already had the technology to preserve the effervescence of sparkling long before any French register. Although the region of Champagne is still famous for its superb wine production, other wine regions have flourished due to climate changes. England is a prime example, with wineries such as Denbies in Surrey, Chapel Down in Kent, Nyetimber and Ridgeview both in Sussex, with
bottle-fermented sparkling wines that are beginning to compete seriously with their counterparts in France. And there is one with remarkable quality: Nyetimber. The history of the English unique winery began in 1988 when Stuart and Sandy Moss planted the first vines on his farm, transforming it into a vineyard. Its current owner, the Dutch businessman Eric Heerema, is responsible for creating unique sparkling wines, elegant and difficult to imitate. Nyetimber Blanc de Blancs is known for being fresh and complex with a bouquet of white flowers, deep minerality, honey, citrus, lime, lychee, grapefruit, spices, and vanilla with hints of fine pastry. Tiny bubbles give a creamy texture on the palate offering a particularly compelling experience. In 2009 the Nyetimber was named the best sparkling wine in the world among fifty-two brands, beating Roederer and Bollinger champagne. Nyetimber is available in London restaurants such as Hakaasan, Pollen Street Social and HIX. nyetimber.com

“The most important relationship you have in your life is the relationship you have with yourself.”
Diane Von Furstenberg Fashion Designer
Strong and influential, a leader, a trendsetter, Diane Von Furstenberg is an established female in the fashion world. With the radical slogan “Feel like a woman. Wear a dress,” Diane began captivating the catwalks in the 70’s.
Born Diane Simone Michelle Halfin, she married into the German princely House of Fürstenberg and became the wife of Prince Egon of Fürstenberg. At a young age, Diane already had an inclination to think outside the box. “The minute I knew I was about to be a prince’s wife, I decided to have a career. I wanted to be someone of my own, and not just a plain little girl who got married beyond her desserts.” After having two children, the couple divorced and years later she married the lover of her life, media mogul Barry Diller.
strong character genes A strong woman who has faced challenges and difficult circumstances, Diane credits her mother, Liliane, for her amazing resilience. As a holocaust survivor from Auschwitz, Liliane taught her daughter that “Fear is not an option.” Diane speaks without reservation about her mother’s influence on her life.
in the Beginning Diane studied economics at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Involved in fashion from an early age, she then moved to Paris to work as an assistant to a fashion photographer’s agent and later to Italy to work as an apprentice to textile manufacturer Angelo Ferretti . There she learned about cut, color and fabric and designed her first silk jersey dresses.

mission in liFe
Clearly stated, “I design for the woman who loves being a woman.” With that mindset, she introduced the iconic wrap dress in 1974. This dress was so influential that an example is in the collection of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Beyond the fashion world, Diane von Furstenberg has a mission in life: to empower women. “I wanted to be an empowered woman, and I became an empowered woman, and now I want to empower every woman. And I do it through my clothes, I do it through my words, I do it through my money, I do it through everything.”
the art oF simplicity In an interview Diane explained, “My wrap dress was almost accidental. It’s the most traditional shape, like the kimono shape, no buttons or zipper, and it wraps. But what was different about it is that it was made in jersey, and it was tied to the body and therefore it kind of sculpted the body. I’ve touched so many generations with just that one dress, which is unique.”
Fashion in a nutshell Diane designs are considered as effortlessly elegant and sexy, effortless being the operative word. “I think that creates ease and a confidence,
DVF toDay Today, the DVF empire includes sportswear, beauty, and fragrance lines. The flagship store is a cornerstone of Manhattan’s meatpacking district’s fashion quarter, functioning as a boutique, design studio, and pied-à-terre. Along with several career highlights and accomplishments, Diane recently collaborated with the GAP to create Furstenberg Babies, a line aligns with her motto: “The minute a little girl is born, she is already the woman she will be. So to empower a little girl is to empower the woman she will become.” She is also a grandmother to two girls and one boy, Antonia, Tassilo and Talita.
