Ballerina Flats HAPPINESS : JUST A STEP AWAY!

to emulate. More recently, designers like Lanvin and Tory Burch launched flashy, stylish versions of this popular trend. Nowadays, ballerinas are truly a fashion classic. They are the go-to-shoe for any occasion, and if styled correctly, have the same effect as an amazing pair of heels—without the pain! Popular among girls and women of all ages, ballet flats are an indispensable item and the most versatile ally of the female wardrobe.

THANK YOU FLATS FOR COMBINING STYLE AND COMFORT like no other accessory. Becoming our favorite shoes of the season, you’ve shown us that being fashionable and feeling at ease can go hand in hand. Yes, high heels are an irresistible item for almost every woman; figure enhancing, heels give us that sense of height, allure and elegance. But in this fast-paced world, no other footwear understands and suits the needs of the modern woman better than a pair of flats or ballerinas. Real women, those running from here to there without stopping, taking their kids to school, attending important business meetings—dressing up and dressing down— need, and deserve, optimal footwear. Comfortable, stylish and distinctive, with that touch of practicality and functionality that today’s busy lifestyle demands. How Ballerina flats got there name is no accident—most everything in fashion is recycled from past centuries. It began in the Middle Ages where men wore pompes, a similar type of flat shoe that was at the height of fashion. In the sixteenth century, these shoes, or pompes, became popular among women as well as men. Later, during the French revolution, these shoes evoked an entirely different connotation—one of rebellion. Ballerinas were revived as a symbol of protest against the despised, overly indulgent Marie Antoinette who walked to the guillotine in a pretty pair of high heels. Jumping to the late 1950’s, the popularity of ballerina flats returned when Audrey Hepburn used a pair of ballet shoes with skinny jeans in the movie Funny Face, creating an “everyday look” that thousands of women wanted

usitano breeders Carmina Zamorano and Rafael Chávez Monzon are passionate about the Lusitano horse, Zamorano and Chávez Monzon have imported their herd of Veiga-bred Lusitanos to Texas, which includes highly regarded mares and stallions who have earned top honors in Portugal, Brazil and Mexico. “We began moving our horses from Mexico to The Woodlands, Texas, three years ago,” says Carmina Zamorano. “Now, we are building a facility nearby to showcase them—a place where both our old friends and new ones can come to enjoy the horses and learn about Working Equitation and Dressage from some of the world’s top trainers.” Building a deluxe home for riders, the facility will include a very luxe boutique hotel featuring spa areas for both men and women, with sauna and steam rooms, massage areas and locker rooms, and a gym. A swimming pool, hotel bar, restaurant and a media lounge where clinic riders can enjoy a cocktail, review and talk about their ride videos also add to the resort ambiance. The adjoining training facility is state-of-the-art, with a lovely stucco 42-stall barn and a 25 by 60-meter indoor arena overlooked

by an observation lounge that rivals any top class facility. The property also has a separate office and a chapel built overlooking the lake—just the place for a destination wedding. The equestrian resort will also be marketed to groups for special events, an entrepreneurial idea that is typical of Zamorano, whose “other business” is a highly successful financial consulting company in Mexico. This husband and wife team made a major splash at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky with their glittering glass Lusitano Lounge, whose purpose was to introduce the Lusitano and Working Equitation to a totally new audience in the United States. in addition to sponsoring Working Equitation competition and exhibitions at major shows such as the IALHA Nationals and The Pin Oak Charity Horse Show near Houston, Haras Dos Cavaleiros, has recently hosted Jorge de Souza first Working Equitation Champion of the World, team and Individual,

as a special guest for their Grand Opening and to teach a clinic at the new facility. Haras Dos Cavaleiros is currently open for business Zamorano emphasizes:“We have three very fine young trainers here now working with our horses and those of our clients, and we are happy to schedule lessons in equitation while we are finishing up the facility,” Carmina says. Breeding the best horse for Working Equitation Rafael Chávez Monzon began collecting Lusitanos more than ten years ago, and has leveraged that investment to produce his homebred Xperto, a charismatic bay stallion that has won every major award in Mexico, including National Champion in 2004 and 2006 and Best Male born in Mexico. He was also IALHA,Champion Stallion and Champion in Dressage Sport Horse in Hand at The Pin Oak Charity Horse Show in 2011, his first show-ring appearance in the United States.Haras Dos Cavaleiros also stands five other stallions from Portugal and Brazil who have won more major awards than we can list here. The best news is that Rafael is willing to work with aspiring breeders, even accepting payment plans on stud fees. The goodwill is palpable; the couple wants to share their dream with fellow enthusiasts, with advocates like Rafael Chávez Monzon and Carmina Zamorano, the future of Lusitano Horses in the Americas and beyond is looking very bright. Haras Dos Cavaleiros will be taking their Lusitano Lounge promoting Working Equitation to the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France, joining Alltech and a number of other global brands who champion equine sports. harasdoscavaleiros.com

Anderson & Sheppard

SAVILE ROW TAILORS SINCE 1906

FRED ASTAIRE, GARY COOPER AND PRINCE CHARLES are just some of the clients that Anderson & Sheppard have dressed over their first century of existence. In literal terms, bespoke means “made to the buyer’s specification,” or, personally tailored. Since their very beginning, Anderson & Sheppard have been a prominent establishment at Savile Row—the street in London that more than a dozen of the most exclusive bespoke tailoring houses call home.

Although the firm was founded by Per Anderson and Sheppard Sydney in 1906, it was the German tailor Frederick Scholte, Per’s mentor, to whom A&S owe their hallmark: the famous “London cut.” Anderson & Sheppard were founding members of the Savile Row Bespoke Association, which was created to protect and develop the art of bespoke tailoring. In March 2005, they decided to leave their beloved “bespoke row” and move to 32 Old Burlington Street. Much was said about how the new location would affect the brand, however, Anderson & Sheppard proved it was not Savile Row that defined them—it was the cutters, tailors and salesmen with whom their customers had developed lasting relationships that mattered. It was the pleasant experience of choosing fabrics, linings and buttons for their customers’ latest wardrobe update, and, above all, the distinctive way an Anderson & Sheppard suit looks and feels: smooth, elegant and with a perfect cut, that confirms the radical founding ideal of the firm: “The suit shouldn’t wear the man; the man should wear the suit.” anderson-sheppard.co.uk

OLYMPICS, GLORIO U London Was an Epic Backdrop for Equestrian Sport at 2012 Olympic Games. It was, from beginning to end, an unforgettable Olympics for many reasons, not the least of which that the Games took place in the heart of an equestrian friendly nation. ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY ERIN GILMORE

F

rom the swell of twenty thousand spectators screaming in unison as their favorite riders completed the course, to the pricked ears and widened equine eyes of 74 elite show jumping couples taking in the massive track and its glorious surroundings, to the tiny child’s desire to get an autograph from a newly minted medalist. “It was an unbelievable experience,” said Team Gold Medalist Ben Maher of Great Britain. “Normally I don’t hear anything when I ride in… In Greenwich it was pretty hard not to get distracted by the great roar of the crowd. The main thing was that the horse stayed focused.” Future Games are now faced with the monumental task of creating a venue that could even come close to the impressive setting and epic backdrops that Greenwich Park provided for the 2012 equestrian and pentathlon Olympic events. Vistas of London high-rises rose up behind cross-country obstacles, and the Queen’s Residence served as a stately witness to every moment of competition inside the main stadium. Show jumpers cleared obstacles that splendidly reflected themes of London landmarks and Greenwich Park’s history. A nod to the historic Royal Observatory, which sits above the Park and looked down on the stadium, was seen in obstacles such as the three-day eventing competition’s impressive crescent moon jump.

24 [ equlifestyle.com ]

EQU14_olympics-OK.indd 24

26/09/12 13:01

The centerline of the Olympic Stadium ran exactly along the prime meridian line, the place where measurements of time and location were established in 1661, over 350 years ago. All of the Olympic riders were literally galloping along this historical prime meridian, at which longitude is measured at 0°, and the Eastern and Western Hemispheres begin. That deep-rooted history laid a sort of reverence on the competition, where the ground seemed so hallowed that the horses more often rode above rather than on it.

RIDING ON AIR Once the setting for royal foxhunts, Greenwich Park is the oldest enclosed Royal Park, and one of 188 natural World Heritage Sites. Leading up to the Games, citizens of the Royal Borough of Greenwich strongly objected to the idea of horses (not to mention the thousands of spectators) galloping upon and possibly damaging the historic grounds of the Park. Olympic footing contractor Andrews Bowen and American footing experts Equestrian Services International worked together with Games organizers to come up with the solution—for the first time in history, the equestrian competition was built atop a raised, temporary platform. The massive scope of this project cannot be fully realized until standing under the stadium that was constructed on that platform, and gazing up at scaffolding that held thousands upon thousands of equestrian fans, who made the stands echo with their thundering feet when a hometown rider went clear.

O US OLYMPICS! Opposite top: London bridge with Olympic Rings. Opposite bottom: Crescent Moon jump. This page top: Flexible and Fellers looking great at the jog. Middle: Swiss rider Steve Guerdat holds his Olympic Gold Medal. Bottom: Big Star and Nick Skelton on their way to Team Gold.

A glimpse of the interconnected warm-up rings, stables, and paths to and from the stadium told the same story—a network of steel and wood platforms built to create a buffer between the ground and the surfaces where horses passed. Early concerns over the correct formula of sand materials that would balance concussion on the platform with a ridable surface were solved by the time the Games began, and under ever-changing skies that ranged from downpour to blazing summer heat, the riding surface held up brilliantly, from beginning to end. The horses proved to be most adaptable, taking to their high rise without issue, and focusing completely on the task at hand.

NEWLY MINTED STARS When Cian O’Connor of Ireland picked up a single costly time fault aboard Blue Lloyd, relegating him to a jump off for silver, the Individual Gold Medal in show jumping went to Swiss rider Steve Guerdat who had a perfect two round score on that final day. As the clock stopped for O’Connor, Guerdat’s team all embraced, including his father Philippe. A horseman himself, the elder Guerdat was Steve’s first coach and biggest supporter. Bringing an Individual Gold Medal home to Switzerland was a dream come true. After finishing 2nd to Rich Fellers in the 2012 FEI World Cup Final this past April, 30 year old Guerdat felt certain that his horse, the 11 year old Selle Francis gelding Nino des Buissonnets, had the ability to produce good results at the Olympics.

“I knew I had a freak of a horse under me,” said Guerdat. “In Den Bosch (at the World Cup Final) it was clear to me that if I rode well I could be an Olympic Champion.” As Guerdat galloped around the packed stadium for victory honors after the Olympic awards ceremony, he held the reins in one hand and picked up the gold medal from around his neck, staring down at it in wonder. The enormity of his accomplishment seemed to dawn on him at that moment; he had just ended an 88-year equestrian medal drought for his country.

DREAMS AND DISAPPOINTMENTS German eventer Michel Jung won the Individual Gold Medal in eventing on his 30th birthday, capping an unforgettable three phases aboard Sam, the horse that also carried him to the Individual and Team World Equestrian Games Championship in 2010 and European Championship title in 2011. Germany also won Team Gold in Eventing, making Jung the most decorated individual eventer in history. Dressage rider Charlotte Dujardin of Great Britain also made history when she claimed the first-ever Olympic medals in dressage for Britain. The Individual and Team Gold Medalist stormed to victory aboard Valegro, a 10-year-old Dutch bred stallion, less than two years after beginning her grand prix dressage career. A mere 18 months earlier, 26-year-old Dujardin was grooming for teammate and coach, Carl Hester. Recognizing Dujardin’s enormous talent, Hester helped her to advance quickly from groom to grand

prix rider by continuing to allow her to ride Valegro, who was originally brought into the stable as a sale horse. The realization of dreams made this particular Olympic competition unforgettable for many riders. Others did not perform well enough for medals, heartbreaking yet fuel for improvement. The United States finished equal sixth in the show jumping team competition, with just one American finishing in the top ten individuals. World Cup Champions Rich Fellers and Flexible had high hopes for a medal, but the team collected a handful of faults after five incredible months of no fault, well-earned wins earlier in the year. “I didn’t think the Olympics would be easy, I never thought that. But sometimes you learn more from defeat than from success,” Fellers noted. “I think we learned a lot during the week.”

WIN OR LOSE, THE GAMES WERE GLORIOUS It had been decades since equestrian events at an Olympic Games were folded into an urban landscape that was in the immediate area of other Olympic venues. Sitting well inside the city limits of London on the shores of the river Thames, Greenwich gave equestrian sport the stage of a lifetime. Just steps outside the gates to the park, the Borough’s many hotels were filled with riders, grooms, media and spectators who filtered into local restaurants after the day’s events, or stopped in for a cup of coffee on their way to the competition in the mornings. Truly glorious.

There are no "characters" in Cavalia. The performances are as natural and neutral as possible. The only stars of the show are the horses! The continuous and whirling pace of the show is a feast for the spectator's eyes. Each number requires a lot of work, invention, and coordination that remains unseen by the audience. Pure enchantment!

avalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse, moves its 10-story gleaming White Big Top to San Diego for a November 13 opening. Following the Southern California engagement, the 48 horses, 40 artists and 120 behind the scenes crew will travel to the land Down Under for an Australian debut where the show will mark 10 years of awe-inspiring equestrian and acrobatic spectacular. The newest innovation, Cavalia’s Odysseo, opens October in Monterrey, Mexico, where the extraordinary multimedia extravaganza toasts a record breaking first year. In this show 56 horses and 43 riders, acrobats, aerialist and musicians perform in the world’s largest touring tent before a stunning video backdrop the size of 3 IMAX screens. These screens project HD 3-D images of the world’s most beautiful landscapes—a forest and a lake are re-created on stage for the horses’ and humans’ playground. These two equestrian theatre productions marry the traditions of centuries-old ceremonies and celebrations of European aristocracy with today’s stage arts and high-tech theatrical effects. The result? One incredible and unforgettable evening. The inspiration for these unique and innovative productions was a single horse. Simply, the co-founder of Cirque du Soleil and creator of the Cavalia shows, Normand Latourelle, added a horse to a crowd scene of one of his productions. “There was so much happening on the stage, but every eye was on the horse. That started me looking at this ancient and innate relationship between horses and humans... The horse is the most beautiful animal on earth. It does not take much to appreciate their aesthetic, and how they react, and how they are still such part of nature.” For almost 10 years, Cavalia’s audiences in North and Central America and Europe have appreciated the opportunity to see the horse as he is in nature—on his own. “The stage is not controlled by humans; what happens is controlled mostly by the horses. I built stages big enough for the horses to feel this is their playground and that they can express who they are. Through much of the show the horses are totally free—no bridles, no halters.” Still, Latourelle is surprised by how successful Cavalia has been. “I expected the show to go on for three years. Now it’s 10 years, and we are still filling the house.” When Cavalia moves to a new city, Latourelle makes changes, always refining and creating. But his biggest change was the second equestrian show, Odysseo. Accepting the challenge to go even further than Cavalia, Latourelle was determined to create a feast for the eyes and ears. “I have made no concession on how much we spend or how far we have to go to create this show.” Through stunning natural landscape settings created by innovative technology, the audience discovers the staged space in layers,

through curtains and projection. “There is so much depth that you feel like you’re on the Mongolian steppes, like a National Geographic photography, viewing the most amazing landscape in the world.” Cavalia portrays the intricate relationship between horse and human. Odysseo describes what human and horse have accomplished together. “This show is about a fabulous journey with the horse traveling through the world’s natural environment. If one word describes this journey, it is ‘beauty’. In this show everything is beautiful... It’s simple, but you let the horse be a horse and that creates the magic. We wanted to feel like the horses are galloping in nature, through a big field. That was the dream.” Here, for example, is one of the last scenes of show. (No, this is not a spoiler alert.) Six Arabian horses literally run at liberty though the onstage lake of 80,000 gallons of water. They just run and run with their tails in the air and bounding with joy—until they decide they have had enough. That could be 30 seconds or two minutes. And when they are done playing, they just walk off stage. Normand Latourelle takes every opportunity to enhance the enchantment he saw when that first horse walked across his stage and the audience was mesmerized. Both shows impart the beauty, peace and balance of the horse in nature. “If you push too much, the horses are unhappy or tense. They respond positively if you are gentle and fair. Our riders and trainers give the horse a chance and then the horse has fun. It becomes play, not work.” To the horses, the show is a playground. “Every horse is a star in the show. It depends on whom you like. One horse has a mane that practically touches the floor and that is impressive. On the other hand an eight-year-old girl fell in love with one of our Appaloosas named Chocolate Chip,” recalls the impresario. “I know this is my show, but I am not just saying this,” tells Latourelle. “There is not one place on stage that is not beautiful and peaceful and dreamy. Think Alice in Wonderland, but with horses and acrobats—with life. It is like the movie Avatar, but without fighting!” In their own way, the stars of the show demonstrate their agreement. Normand Latourelle laughs, “We put a sound system in the stable. A groom put on the music of the show. The horses came to their windows as if to say ‘it’s the time to go. Where are my brushes? Where’s my costume?’ We decided against playing show music. Grooms like rock and roll, which I’m not into. But it’s okay as long as it’s not Cavalia music.” However, based on the 10 years of Cavalia’s success and the overwhelming reaction to Odysseo during its one-year debut, the magic of these two shows will continue to fascinate, engage and amaze. Tickets to Cavalia and Odysseo are available online at cavalia.net or by calling 1 866 999 8111. Follow Cavalia Inc.’s latest developments at twitter.com/cavalia or facebook.com/cavalia

Woman of style expressions

Vera Wang

Fashion Designer

multicultural influence

reaching a wider audience

Raised in France by her Chinese-born business tycoon father and her très elegante mother, Wang was couture shopping in Paris at a young age. As her fashion career evolved, Wang spent 15 years as senior fashion editor at Vogue, followed by a position as design director for Ralph Lauren. With a premier background, we were inquisitive about her style—how does she use her culturally mixed upbringing to her advantage? And how does she see the brand expanding worldwide? In an interview, Wang answered clearly, “I think there’s going to be a real push in Asia—China and Korea specifically. Ten years ago it was impossible to break into that part of the world. But I am Chinese-American and I think what we do will resonate in China. So that’s where we see our biggest opportunities going forward. I do speak Mandarin and I also relate to the hunger that China has for culture and architecture and style. I like to think that the brand has the sophistication of Paris, because I grew up there and went to school there and had a home there for 30 years. And then I’m very American at the core. I try to bridge those two worlds in my work. The clothes may be couture on the runway but there’s an attitude that’s very street and that comes from America.”

Few designers have managed to narrow the gap between the fashion designer and the public like Vera Wang, the public can truly relate to her. She is haute couture, but also accessible via a collection at Kohl’s department store. Why the wide range? The designer delineates the difference. “I started at the very highest level so the upper end is something I know very well. But all the years I was designing, it frustrated me that I could reach so few women. So my being able to reach the masses was something that meant a great deal to me—especially for women who could never wear Vera Wang. I used to get tons of letters that said, ‘I’ll never get to wear you,’ or ‘I’ll never get married in one of your dresses,’ I thought that was sad, because you give your life to this and you end up reaching very few people. So that was a major goal for me—to be able to reach and encourage more women, to encourage them to express themselves and be what they want to be.”

contribution to the fashion industry and your wedding day Wang has contributed more to the bridal wear genre and received a plethora of attention in the fashion industry. Wang has absolutely redefined

the limits of what a wedding dress can, and should look like. But her ambition goes beyond a beautiful just-to-be-worn-once dress. In the last decade, Wang’s fashion aspirations have expanded into completing a woman’s wardrobe. How does this extremely successful female feel about her contribution to the demanding fashion world? And her words of wisdom for brides to be? Words from a woman who has made a stamp in the fashion world for almost a quarter of a century, “I think fashion is intensely personal. It should give a woman a creative outlet, it should give her a little bit of an escape, and it should give her a little bit of individuality that she can add to her life. I don’t mean redoing your entire closet. I mean that a great shoe or a great handbag or a great top or a great coat or jacket can change everything. It’s important to view fashion as personal and creative— even for brides. When brides ask me, ‘What’s the best advice you can give me on my wedding day?’ I always have the same answer: ‘Be yourself.’ Someone’s marrying you; they love you for who you are. They don’t want you to be someone else. If you never wear blue eye shadow, why would you start on your wedding day? If you wear your hair simply, why would you suddenly dye it a different color and get a big ’do? To me it’s about respect, selfunderstanding and honesty.”

Photos: Courtesy of Vera Wang.

Vera Wang, who designed her own wedding gown, opened her first bridal boutique in the Carlyle Hotel on Madison Avenue, New York, in 1990. And twenty-two years later, the now 63-year-old fashion designer is beloved by brides all over the world.

couple that wove a passionate hobby into a profitable, sustainable and successful business. Christopher and Suzanne Sharp used to travel around the world making films and collecting rugs, an activity that inspired them to establish The Rug Company fifteen years ago. Now known as one of the most exclusive contemporary handmade rug creators, The Rug Company is a combined effort of more than a thousand people: from the spinners and weavers, to the people who deliver and lay the finished rug. The result of all these contributions is a hand-knotted creation that will last for generations. Committed to their art and industry, the Sharps proudly produce and source the most desirable rugs in the world. To achieve this, they pay special attention to two things: craftsmanship and design.

Cognizant of detail, the weavers continue to craft the rugs entirely by hand, using the very same techniques implemented a hundred years ago. Although more time consuming, these methods prevent the raw materials from losing any of their distinguishing properties during the production process, thus ensuring the uniqueness of each hand-made piece. The Sharps believe design to be paramount—that is why they work exclusively with artistic manufacturers whose commercial success is a by-product of their creativity, ability and originality. Working with some of today’s most talented and respected fashion designers worldwide—Paul Smith, Diane von Furstenberg, Vivienne Westwood, and Alexander McQueen to name a few—they believe that their creative brilliance and deep understanding of print and color contributes to the firm’s “innovate-and-inspire” objective. The collaboration of this distinctive line of rugs and home accessories took three years, and was well worth the wait. Alexander McQueen’s collection is based on some of his most famous and emblematic design patterns that appear in many forms: feathers, hummingbirds, skulls as well as military and Asian influence. With craftsmanship that achieves couture status, the collection combines the genius, expertise, and vision of the McQueen with luxe detail and superior quality The Rug Company is known for—a perfect blend.

Chris Sharp once said, “Anything that comes out of passion just works.” The Rug Company is living proof of this statement, that, and collaborating with the right people, like McQueen.

ONE MARKET, SAN FRANCISCO

Now we head North to the sophisticated and sumptuous city by the bay, San Francisco. The unparalleled One Market restaurant combines the Michelin Star-winning, farm-to-table food of Chef Mark Dommen, an open exhibition kitchen with a special “Chef ’s Table”, a wood-fired grill, and a splendid bar. Thanks to its convenient location, bright surroundings, and the prompt attention of the excellent staff, One Market is considered an ideal choice for a business lunch, for closing that million-dollar deal, a see and be seen establishment. Taking into account the rule “If it’s not in season, we simply don’t use it,” every dish and dessert is fresh, enticing and masterfully prepared. By expertly walking the line between forthright and outré, Dommen created a truly timeless restaurant. In September they celebrated The Heirloom Tomato Festival with such dishes as Pan Seared Day Boat Scallops with heirloom tomato risotto, olive oil, and verbena. You could also indulge in the Wild Gulf Shrimp “Louis” with romaine hearts, avocado and quail egg or maybe a Pan-seared Gulf Flounder with black-eyed peas, applewood-smoked bacon and sofrito vinaigrette as a marvelous main course. Learjet 85

 Announced in 2007, this customer-driven designed aircraft has finally come to life via the first “compound structure” model put out by Bombardier Aerospace. This two crew, four passenger aircraft has an avant garde design based on the Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion, which offers a fully integrated flight deck with unsurpassed pioneering features. The new generation Pratt & Whitnet Canada PW 307B engine guarantees maximum endurance and economic operation with low levels of emission, as well as noise and environmental impact reduction. True to its name, Learjet 85 offers a high velocity experience by reaching the Mach 0.82 levels and a trans-continental range of up to 3,000 nautical miles. The aircraft’s customized version Cabin Management System, developed by Lufthansa Technik, features a high-capacity Ethernet network with a digital amplifier to feed the high-fidelity speaker system and an interface to support the aircraft cabin environment, including lighting and temperature control. Certain to be a comfortable yet productive way to travel.

The manufacturing genius of the first Learjet 85 is a real accomplishment for the aircraft sector in Latin America. The Bombardier Aerospace factory, located in the new aerospace park in Querétaro, Mexico, developed this particular model. The success in the production of the Learjet 85 has set the foundation for Mexico’s high quality aerospace industry. “This is an unprecedented accomplishment, not only for the Learjet 85 program, but for the aerospace industry as well. The integration of new technology of composite materials makes this aircraft one of its kind,” said Eric Desrosiers, Composite Production Manager. That enthusiasm and pride is shared by everyone at the Querétaro facility. “I feel very proud,” said Réal Gervais, Vice President of Operations, Bombardier Aerospace in Mexico. “This is a unique and extraordinary accomplishment for the Learjet 85 program and for the Querétaro plant as well. A lot of people made this possible. Our team worked very hard in order to make this happen.” bombardier.com

all the luxury in a smartphONe

Details Define luxury, especially when taking something practical and functional and turning it into something beautiful and desirable. This little number will give you edge, new and slick and ready for the trend setting. Reliability, lasting quality and good reception are typical traits of Nokia phones. However, in regards to design, the brand had not yet produced an exclusive or distinguished item. Well, that has changed. Creating an alternative collection that gives the consumer all the advantages plus lavish it in glam and immeasurable lux, Nokia presents the most magnificent cell phone on the market: Vertu. A top choice for the most demanding cell clients, not only does the design set itself apart from other phones, but superior functionality such as a high contrast screen protected with sapphire crystal, hi-fi speakers, an active function seven-hour lasting battery, eight megapixels camera, USB port entrance, Bluetooth and so much more.

Now, if you are what could be considered a helpless workaholic, and being reachable is not enough, Vertu Constellation meets Quick Office platform, providing access on Microsoft software like Word, Excel and PowerPoint; aside from having access to PDF files, and Internet powered Photo viewer. With out a doubt Vertu Constellation, is consummate communication tool, from design to delivery. vertu.com

How The West Has Won BY JACKIE MCFARLAND

IN THE BEGINNING Karen discovered her love for horses when her family lived near a barn that a trainer named Sally Dohner owned near Harrisburg, PA. As the oldest of five children in a middle class household, when she asked her father for riding lessons “He looked at me like I had three heads. So I mucked, raked, watered—essentially did all the barn work for the chance to ride.” And that’s how it started. She purchased her first pony with money earned from babysitting and working at the barn. She competed on the local circuit, sold the pony and bought a horse. Over the years she gained great miles in the barn, in the saddle and in the show ring. Karen graduated from high school and was accepted to Vasser and Swarthmore but needed a scholarship to afford tuition, so she put school on hold. Sally sold the barn. Karen stayed to manage and teach, but the barn wasn’t the same. Taking the chance to go to college, she completed two years before taking a job with a young professional in the area, George Morris.

In 1972 George had just moved to Hunterdon and Karen went to Florida for the winter to work as a groom. Secretly hoping to be discovered as a rider what she found was that she loved teaching. After about nine months with George, she was managing the barn, teaching and taking clients to shows. The two aforementioned equestrians were her biggest influences, yet she turned a corner in her riding through another discipline. “Sally was an excellent horseman, from the barn to breaking horses for the racetrack to riding effectively. George had a huge impact. Through him I worked with Bert de Nemethy, Jessica Ransehousen and Gunnar Ostergaard. I loved the dressage work. I hadn’t done that type of flatwork and I took to it quite well. When I understood how to incorporate dressage into my hunt seat was when I really learned how to ride well.”

THE WILD WEST After a solid five years with Hunterdon, several years at Tewkesbury Farms, New Hope and Boulder Brook, it was time for a change. In the early eighties Sally Dohner and Bucky Reynolds had ventured west to start a business at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. After pondering the opportunity to take her knowledge to a new frontier, Karen decided to head west. Sally and Bucky left two months later, but she had made a decision and was going to stick to it. Quite different from the east coast landscape, she soon learned that paddocks on the west coast weren’t green grass, woodfenced areas but dirt pipe corrals. Compared to Tewksbury, NJ where there were 100 oneday and multi-day shows a year, the entire state of California had only ten or twelve recognized horse shows annually. Karen recalled those early days with a smile. “When I first started going to shows in California I would get on a horse early in

n inspiration to hundreds of equestrians, a pioneer of excellence on the both coasts, strong-willed, stubborn and supremely dedicated, Karen Healey can speak volumes about correct position, technical riding, the idiosyncrasies of getting a great jump, essentially every detail of rider and equine development. But she is also a gourmet cook, adores the theatre and volunteers for the homeless every holiday season. I wanted the story behind the master, how she came to be an equestrian, choices she made that we all experience, career moments, her thoughts on the sport. Behind the serious and tireless teacher is a kid who grew up loving horses, worked for the chance to ride and has a huge heart for canines and equines.

the morning and I would be the only one there until five minutes before the classes started. One of the first regional finals was at Flintridge. It was pouring rain. Without even giving it a second thought, I taught all day in the downpour. At about three o’clock. one of the trainers, Larry Mayfield, came out and told me he’d been sent out to the ring to ask me to please go home, the rest of them certainly wanted to. I laughed and told him I wasn’t done yet.” In the eighties the west coast winter circuit was in Arizona, and a few of her students were ready for that level, including Mia Woods and Meredith Michaels. In 1986 Mia went to east to ride with Beacon Hill for the USEF Medal Finals and won. Meredith was one of the first to focus on the east coast as a part of her plan. Even after she went to Princeton, she planned to take a semester off to compete in the Olympic Trials. “Although we both knew she would always be involved with horses at a high level, I think it was important that Meredith spent those years at Princeton. And, well, the rest is history,” Karen still gets up early and stays until the last horse is done. No longer the lone trainer at the show from sunrise to sunset, rain or shine, over the last 25 years Karen has been an integral part of the west coast evolving into a viable place for developing great horses and horsemen.

“Earning second, third and fourth in the 2007 USEF Medal Finals with Hannah Selleck, Tina DiLandri and Shelby Wakeman respectively was great for all involved—the kids, the barn and making a stamp that the west coast was, and is, certainly a force to be reckoned with.” After hundreds of medal finals, Indoor circuits and horse shows all over the country, Karen is still 150% involved. She made a clear distinction about her specialty. “I am not an equitation trainer,

Opposite page: Karen Healey. Top: Hannah Selleck wins the 2008 USET Talent Search Finals. Bottom: Lauren Kay's Gulliver.

A FEW OF MANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS Karen recalls, “In 1989 Lauren Kay and Gulliver were second in the Maclay to Ray Texel. Her mother was thrilled and asked ‘So can we just quit now?’ But she went back the next year, battled it out with Kelley Farmer and won.” “In 1998 at the USEF Medal Finals in Harrisburg, the weather was terrible, really rainy. There wasn’t a lot of opportunity to prepare. Jill Prieto’s horse Derreck was really nervous and had two rails in the first round. She got called back about 24th, and had an unbelievably beautiful second round, moving up to 6th. They brought back the top six for further testing. The track was difficult and the riders weren’t allowed to watch each other. Jill had to go first and she was super. She ended up second to Kent Farrington.”

there is no such thing. The Medals happen to be a path many riders choose—there are goals to work towards and technical aspects to master in order to ride well in the finals. Plus learning to deal with the pressure. My career, and what I love to do, is teaching students to ride well, assistant trainers to train well and horses to jump well.” Although known for top results in equitation, several riders have earned hunter as well as jumper accolades, from championships at Indoors to medals at NAJYRC, including the 2012 Gold Medal Winner, Killian McGrath. Many professionals, including Archie Cox, Kasey Ament, Jill Prieto, Cathleen Calvert and recently Hannah Selleck, have spent time working with Karen before venturing out on their own. “Hannah will be a really top professional, she’s got years of great miles, and is now focusing on what it takes outside of the show ring. She’s soaking up a whole new body of knowledge.”

DESIRE AND NO TEARS

opportunity, is an essential mental edge. No tears, no fear—but an intense focus, knowing where you are mentally each step of the track. And pressing on when something doesn’t go as planned, those mishaps drive you even more. Meredith, Karen explained, always had that edge.

GIVING BACK Karen’s involvement with the hunter/jumper affiliate USHJA dates back to its inception eight years ago. She’s an active part of an extremely dedicated group who has worked tirelessly to create the Trainer Certification Program (TCP). Karen is committed to teaching and preserving the American system of riding. TCP provides a foundation and sets consistent standards for trainers across the board. Although difficult in today’s show world, Karen still tries to find horses that a kid from a background like hers can develop. It takes a couple of years to make a top horse, but working together to achieve training and competitive goals is truly rewarding. “In this sport, you’re only as good as the last class you’ve ‘won’. It’s constant. I’ve been asked if I’m ready to retire. I’ll retire when I stop getting the good knot in my stomach—wanting it so badly for the kids—when that stops, I’ll stop. I’m not even close yet.”

Karen claims without hesitation that what makes a great rider is desire. All the talent in the world without a solid work ethic and a burning desire to be great won’t result in a rider. Among the list of clinics Karen taught this year, two were for the USHJA Emerging Athletes Program (EAP). Lizzy Traband, who has only one arm, participated in an EAP clinic. “Talk about desire—she’s the epitome. She trumps a handicap, doesn’t have a ton of money but has incredible focus and desire. After the clinic she took the time to write an email, expressing her appreciation, explaining what she had learned and she applied it to her work at home.” What separates good riders with desire and work ethic from top international riders who can perform under pressure, even ache for that

Sotheby’s Finest and Rarest Wines once in a lifetime opportunity

If the most unIque and exquIsIte wInes in the world are of interest, you simply must head to London on November 14th, or to New York on November 17th and December 1st when Sotheby’s wine department is hosting the Finest and Rarest Wines auction. Sotheby’s Wine, which holds over 20 annual sales in London, New York, and Hong Kong, offers their wine in its best condition and with excellent provenance. The team, led by Serena Sutcliffe, is known by his great (and well earned) reputation. This alone attracts the most prestigious collectors and most discerning buyers worldwide. Beginning in London on September 12th of last year, they boasted a wonderful Burgundy cellar from an 18th century country house—offering an impressively amassed collection, sourced impeccably and recorded with great care. The choice of producers was filled with renowned names, from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti to Henri Jayer, Comtes Georges de Vogüé to Georges Roumier, and Méo-Camuzet to Mongeard-Mugneret; the ages of these wine running from 1959 to 1990. Lovers of the iconic Vega Sicilia ‘Unico,’ acquired rare vintages from 1959 to 1986 in bottle and magnum formats, sourced from another private collection in Spain. The New York sale on September 15th featured some of the greatest wines to come out of California. The procured were a full case of the legendary 1974 Heitz Martha’s Vineyard, 20 vintages of Opus One from 19792002, as well as some Modern Cult Classics such as a 12-bottle case of 2006 Screaming Eagle. More than 100 bottles of Sine Qua Non wines by Manfred Krankel also made it to the auction block. Selections from Burgundy included seven vintages of La Tâche, while stellar wines from the Rhône featured full cases of 1990 Hermitage La Chapelle from Jaboulet and 1995 Côte Rôtie La Turque from Guigal.

This November, a superb collection of Château Lafite headlines the sale of Finest and Rarest Wines in London. The collection comes with impeccable origin and features complete cases from the years 1957 through to 2009. Buyers are anticipating brilliant collections in the New York auctions, and can be confident that all the wines Sotheby’s offers, not just in these two upcoming sales, but always, have been carefully inspected by the most experienced and knowledgeable specialists. With live online bidding, you can join Sotheby’s auctions all over the world—London, New York and Hong Kong. Listen, watch and bid wherever you are (with an internet connection, of course). Be certain to register online up to 24 hours before each sale. Wine par excellence!

Journal of… SPIRITS

“Luxury is innovation, and as long as I am here, we will innovate; not only on the shapes, materials and ideas. But the whole scope… Because that is what the whole of luxury is about.”

Bernard Fornas CEO Cartier

AS CEO AND PRESIDENT OF ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS LUXURY BRANDS, ONE CANNOT HELP BUT WONDER HOW HE DEALS WITH A POOR ECONOMY. Since taking over as President and Chief Executive Officer in 2002, Fornas and Cartier have experienced more economically bad times than good. Their traditional wealthy American and European clients have switched to unusually cautionary spending habits. Fornas took on the challenge of growing the business in these changing times, without losing its highly desirable cachet. One tactic he used, create less ostentatious more discreet timepieces that speak luxury quietly. LUXURY IS INNOVATION. Silver-haired, immaculately dressed and polished, Fornas is clearly at home with the multi-millionaires Cartier products are designed for. This shared understanding of the value of luxury and exclusivity enables him to speak passionately about retaining the “Cartier smell” and the “Cartier touch” in any new design. While he respects the tradition of the 164-year-old firm, he is also

aware of the need to constantly create new designs with new materials. Fornas claims that ‘Luxury is innovation’ and via this decree he sought to evolve not just design and materials but the entire scope of Cartier. One such innovation was introducing a revolutionary new technology for watch movement that reduces the need for maintenance by half.

SOCIAL AWARENESS AND RESPONSIBILTY AS A LEADER. Fornas takes Cartier’s position as a leader in the industry seriously, and believes the company has a responsibility to uphold a high level of corporate social conscience. In a 2008 television interview he went on record saying that as long as human rights problems continued in Burma, Cartier would not buy any rubies from that country. Cartier has also put up a public fight against the trade in so-called blood diamonds.

CARTIER CONTINUES Cartier is also pressing ahead with ambitious plans to increase its network of high quality boutiques, particularly in new and

emerging markets, and for Fornas this is a key factor in ensuring the brand is able to weather the economic storms. The company also focuses on events that are expected to generate results. One example is the lavish excursion to Istanbul Cartier planned for 150 of its best clients last autumn, where guests were treated to tours, sumptuous dinners and a private viewing of 300 new high jewelry pieces displayed in a mansion on the Bosporus.

Fornas is confident that he has led his firm through the worst. While he will continue to have a senior management role, soon it’ll be up to Stanislas de Quercize the next CEO of Cartier, to lead the company into the next era.

After turning 65 and announcing his upcoming retirement Bernard Fornas, CEO of Cartier International, has a story of struggle and success from the past decade.

WORLD CUP

The FEI World Cup Final, an indoor competition held in April each year, is the single most important annual International Championship in equestrian sport. Other equestrian events at this level, the Olympics and the World Championships, occur every four years. The series, which began in 1978, has fourteen leagues in six continents. Approximately 50 riders qualify annually to compete for the highly sought after title of World Cup Champion. Held at fabulous locations all over the world, the 2013 FEI World Cup Final will be in ‘Göteborg, Sweden, from April 24-28, 2013. Blenheim EquiSports hosts FEI World Cup Qualifying Grand Prix classes in three different locations—Del Mar, San Juan Capistrano and Las Vegas.

WHO IS THE FEI? Left : Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Shutterfly at the 2009 Rolex FEI World Cup Finals in Las Vegas.

The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), founded in 1921, is the international governing body for equestrian sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The sole controlling authority for all international events in many disciplines including show jumping, the FEI establishes the regulations and approves

equestrian programs at Championships, Continental and Regional Games as well as the Olympic Games.

FEI VALUES 1. Fairness and Equality: Equestrianism is one of the very few sports where men and women share the same podium and compete on equal terms up to and including Olympic level. 2. Complicity with the Animal: It is the only sport that involves two athletes, the horse and rider. It is the successful partnership between these two elements; the relationship of confidence and respect that is built up between them, that makes the sport so exceptional. 3. Respect for the Environment: Equestrianism is also very much concerned with the conservation of the environment. It was one of the first international sports federations to establish a Code of Conduct towards the Environment. 4. Respect for the Horse: Since the FEI was formed, it has concerned itself relentlessly with the welfare of the horse. In 1991 the FEI adopted a Code of Conduct, which states as follows: “...at all times the welfare of the horse must be paramount and must never be subordinated to competitive or commercial influences.”

HOW THE TRACK TURNS

HOW BIG AND WIDE ARE THESE JUMPS?

• Walking the course: Before the class begins, each rider has an opportunity to walk the course on foot. They will memorize the order of the jumps, determine how many horse strides to take in between jumps and finalize their plan. They consider each step, each corner and each line they will take, often called the ‘track’. Riders also determine their jump-off plan during the course walk. • Time allowed: The course designer establishes the time allowed. If a rider exceeds the time allowed, he/she will incur time faults. In an FEI class one time fault is added to the score for every four seconds over the time allowed. • Course designer: A very important and technical role, the course designer creates the placement of each jump, the distances between the jumps and the order in which the course will be jumped. Each ‘track’ or course design is unique and has a variety of questions that the rider has to answer without fault. These questions include distance challenges, turns, height, width and more. • Lowering the height of a jump: For each fence lowered, a four fault penalty is added to the score. Touches or rubs don’t count as faults, only a knockdown. • Refusing a jump: If a horse refuses to jump, four faults are incurred. If there are two refusals on course, the horse and rider are immediately eliminated. • Fall of horse or rider: Also constitutes elimination. • A clean round: When a horse and rider jump the course without incurring any penalties within the allotted time allowed, they are ‘clean’. If more than one horse is clean, they compete for the win in the jump-off. • Jump off: All riders who are clean in the first round have the opportunity to return for the jump off. Also created by the course designer, the jumps are raised and the course adjusted for this second round. The goal is to be both fast and clean. The rider who has the least number of faults in the fastest time is the winner.

Jump height cannot exceed 1.60m (5’3”). The spread should be proportionate to the height and not more than 2m (6’7”).

HOW WORLD CUP POINTS ARE EARNED Points are awarded to the top 16 places in the class according to the scale below. If a rider has more than one horse, the first horse they compete on is their World Cup mount for this competition. 1st - 20 pts. 5th - 12 pts. 9th - 8 pts. 13th - 4 pts. nd th th 2 - 17 pts. 6 - 11 pts. 10 - 7 pts. 14th - 3 pts. rd th th 3 - 15 pts. 7 - 10 pts. 11 - 6 pts. 15th - 2 pts. th th th 4 - 13 pts. 8 - 9 pts. 12 - 5 pts. 16th - 1 pts.

t has been another busy and action packed summer for Florida based charity JustWorld International. Founded in 2003 by former grand prix rider Jessica Newman, JustWorld International acts as a catalyst for positive change in the developing world by working with local partner organizations to provide basic education, nutrition, health, hygiene, and vocational programs for children in impoverished communities in Honduras, Cambodia, Guatemala, and Brazil. JustWorld raises funds throughout the international equestrian world, from individuals to partner horse shows to corporate sponsors. While JustWorld continues to support thousands of children in developing countries, expand social programs and bring change to communities, they have also been busy in the equestrian world with fundraising events, exciting partnerships, innovative ambassador initiatives and the launch of the impressive Adopt A Project Campaign! “Bringing Equestrians Together for a Just World” is the hallmark of JustWorld International. Riders and horse shows on the West Coast, including the Las Vegas National, are joining the movement to lend the passion they have for riding to their commitment to helping others. Unique in its origins in the international show jumping community, JustWorld focuses on not only raising funds through events at horse shows but also on developing programs that allow riders to become compassionate and generous global citizens. Through the rider ambassador program, motivated young riders have been able to get involved in innovative fundraising initiatives and participate in a movement of social change! Recent examples of fundraising from dedicated rider ambassadors include Karaoke Dinner Nights, birthday celebration donations, designing a “JustWorld App” with a donate now button, and holding golf events. Currently more than 500 equestrians from 37 countries ride on behalf of JustWorld and pledge to raise awareness and funds as JustWorld Ambassadors. Another way equestrians and the general masses alike can get involved is to Adopt a Project! In June, JustWorld launched its Adopt A Project campaign, allowing supporters to easily get involved and choose exactly which programs they would like their donations to fund. The campaign provides opportunities to support specific education, nutrition, health and hygiene, and leadership and cultural development programs at JustWorld’s project sites in Brazil, Cambodia, Guatemala, and Honduras. More information can be found on the JustWorld website here: www.justworldinternational.org/adopt-a-project The new campaign is a great opportunity for individuals, groups, and businesses to get involved and help to provide critical opera-

tional support to JustWorld, even if they are not directly a part of JustWorld’s key equestrian audience. Ambassadors and other JustWorld supporters are also welcome to join on project visits and see first hand the incredible impact their efforts and JustWorld are having on children around the world. JustWorld is proud of the success the children at its partner projects have achieved, such as in the case of Nita at JustWorld’s partner project, PIO in Cambodia: Nita is a 17-year-old Cambodian girl who has benefitted from the generosity of JustWorld donors. She used to work in Phnom Penh’s garbage dump and lived with her grandmother near the dumpsite. It was a hard and very dangerous life for a young girl. She was also lacking the prospects of a bright future with no education or money to pay for public school in Cambodia. Nita came to study at JustWorld’s partner project, PIO in 2005 and was allowed to live there in 2006, as she did not have a home of her own. After receiving basic education, she wanted to study at the PIO beauty school in 2009 to earn a vocational skill in order to support herself and her family. After completing the beauty salon course, she continued to study English at PIO and worked as a teacher assistant at the PIO beauty school. In 2012 she went back to her village in Sambo Commune, and opened her own beauty salon to help support her family. Her salon is currently thriving and she is able to serve many customers with the skills she developed at PIO, not only helping herself, but her family at large as well as able to train future girls in the trade. Nita is a shining example of JustWorld’s mission, to provide assistance in the short term that develops life long skills for self-sufficiency and thriving communities. JustWorld believes that education is the key to ending cycles of poverty in the regions it works. While education is critical, supportive programs such as nutrition, health, and hygiene create an environment that is conducive to productive studies and motivated students. For this reason, JustWorld has developed comprehensive programs with its partners to support the local children and their families. JustWorld International is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization in the United States and a registered Association 1901 in France. Taxdeductible donations are accepted in Canada and Switzerland. Local branches have also been established in Mexico and Honduras. JustWorld International has no political or religious affiliation. For more please go to: www.justworldinternational.org

Sonoma Horse Park Located just 25 miles north of San Francisco and nestled amongst the famed vineyards of Southern Sonoma County, the Sonoma Horse Park just wrapped its third show season. With five of it’s seven horse shows completely sold out, the facility has certainly established itself as a Northern California gem. Ashley Herman, owner and manager, explained the Sonoma aura. “We built Sonoma Horse Park with the goal of offering the most luxurious experience possible for the exhibitors both on and off the horse. Everything from the oversized arenas, to the footing, to the placement of the stabling was meticulously laid out. Additionally, we wanted the attendee’s experience off the horse to be as pleasurable and as memorable as possible. We are very fortunate to be located in an area that is world-renowned for it’s fantastic wine and food and therefore Sonoma itself has become synonymous with our brand. The VIP food is prepared by the most celebrated caterer in Sonoma; and Thursday through Sunday of every show wine provided by local wineries flows freely for all in attendance. We have a full time, complimentary concierge service that will make dinner reservations, spa appointments, arrange wine tours or even a car service to the airport for anyone in attendance. Additionally, every show we welcome DJ’s, various entertainers, onsite masseuses, manicurists, face-painters, food vendors such as wood-burning pizzas made to order, sushi trucks and gourmet Mexican food to bring a variety of local flavor to the experience.” There are several exciting additions in the works for the 2013 show season, including building a 6th show arena and warm-up, increased prize money, as well as adding the renowned GGT footing to both the main hunter and Jumper 2 arenas.
