In our last issue of the year, we are delighted to present to you some of the best destinations around the world. We have chosen seven special travel experiences for the end of the year vacations. Whether you want to have fun, enjoy the most exquisite gastronomical delights, go diving or simply pamper your significant other, each one of these destinations offers an extraordinary opportunity to indulge in the most luxurious destinations high-end travel has to offer. Thinking about the tremendous display of glamour that the coming festivities incite, we have included two special pieces that can make your holidays a superb and luxurious experience. In Ski in Style we guide you on an intimate journey through the most exclusive snow resorts, while in Beach Getaways we offer you three sun-and-sand destinations that shouldn’t be overlooked. In Musts, Hours and Looks—our style sections—, we have a selection of the best accessories and outfits. In addition to savvy fashion tips on how to look your best and what trends to follow during the season, we also feature a few sneak peeks at some of the topnotch gadgets and innovative design furniture. If you want to get acquainted with everything that happened during the fifth leg of the Rolex FEI World Cup in Stuttgart, or the thrilling surprises at The Las Vegas National, proceed directly to our equestrian features. On a more personal note, we offer our deepest condolences to Eric Lamaze, Torrey Pines, and Ashland Stables for the loss of his horse and dear friend, Hickstead. Though he cannot be replaced, we certainly hope to see some top talent from a high percentage of Hickstead’s 100 foals found worldwide. As for Lamaze, we also hope that he may find some young equine friends on his path that will do their best to answer the questions he might have on his professional future as rider, fulfill his goal, and live up to the name of that little stallion that could. The issue marks the end of a tremendous year of hard work. It is a pleasure and an honor to have developed a family of faithful readers. We truly hope that all your resolutions come to fruition in the upcoming year. Cheers to 2012!

Femme Addiction WHEN ENOUGH IS NOT ENOUGH
What do I love about wintertime? Let me list: boots, boots and more boots! When it comes to this season we are bombarded with options, from booties, ankle boots to knee-high boots, they are all so hot. No matter what your heel preference is, there’s plenty to choose from. I can never decide if I should get black, grey or neutral and this year it gets harder, since the most fashionable and amazing boots came out in a bright and colorful palette. The best thing to do is to sneak a peek inside your closet and peruse the color gamut of your wardrobe before venturing into buying something. Fashion forward and winter ready, these trendsetting platform boots that we now proudly feature, are a sure-fire way to stroll through the cold season in style. Oh, and just like any shoe purchase, make sure they are comfortable…you just “Gotta get them!”
Giuseppe Zanotti Lerre These luxurious snakeskin boots, wrought with stunning craftsmanship, are exactly what your closet needs to give it a twist. Just remember not to go over the edge: pair them with something monochromatic; the boots by themselves are already a feast for the eyes.
Elegant, timeless and subtly sophisticated, these boots check all the right boxes. The delicate strap gives them a chic finish. Wear yours with everything from skinny jeans to skirts this winter. giuseppezanottidesign.com

Drops of Purity
Pearls seem to function as quintessential emblems of what we consider beautiful, precious and pristine. They have been metaphorically tied in different historical periods and cultures to the concepts of purity, nobility, rarity and even sacredness or wisdom. Ancient Chinese records of 2300 BC indicate that pearls were solely meant for royal possession. According to Hindu lore, it was Lord Krishna who discovered the first pearl. In Egypt the possession of pearls can be traced to the 5th century BC.
Natural pearls have been collected and cherished for more than 4,000 years. They could possibly be the world’s oldest gems and they are certainly the only gemstones grown inside a living organism. Pearls are formed within some mollusks as a reaction to an intrusive substance, such as a parasite (not a grain of sand, as commonly believed) that enters its shell. As a response to the irritation produced by the foreign particle, a “pearl sack” is formed which secretes nacre and forms the precious pearl. But why are pearls so rare? Only very few species of mollusks are capable of producing pearls and only a very small percentage of them will ever produce a pearl of desirable shape, size and color; on top of this, only a small fraction of those will ever be harvested by humans. This makes natural pearls highly coveted and, in some instances, downright priceless. The rarity of natural pearls, together with their overexploitation and sea pollution, has been counteracted by the creation of their artificial
production. It was in the beginning of the twentieth century that Japanese researchers were able to develop the cultured pearl by inserting a foreign particle into an Akoya oyster and, upon returning it to the sea, allowing it to produce a natural pearl. Pearls seem to harbor an aura of classic style and distinction that can give any woman a refined sense of elegance. When thinking of pearls, iconic figures of style come to mind such as Mademoiselle Chanel who practically wore them every day; or Jackie O, who depended on pearl necklaces to grant her that subtle touch of sophistication that a first lady should contrive to achieve. Audrey Hepburn in her iconic minimalist black dress, long black gloves and pearl necklace at the opening scenes of Breakfast at Tiffany’s is the embodiment of glamour. Pearls should be an essential component of any woman’s jewelry box.

Shalimar
THE SCENT OF A LEGEND
Photos: Courtesy of Guerlain SA.
MAISON GUERLAIN SHINES ONCE MORE with their charming new Shalimar Parfum Initial. This is the renovation of a great classic by the creative mind of Thierry Wasser. The first step taken to mark Shalimar’s 85th anniversary was to redesign its iconic bottle signed by Jade Jagger. Now, Guerlain’s most significant perfume is in a new chapter that still honors its original charm and sensuality. Light and delicate, sensual and addictive, like the thrill of a new emotion, Shalimar Initial is an introduction to the feeling of new beginnings, to the freshness of first times. Model Natalia Vodianova embodies the new Mumtaz Mahal, whose husband and Emperor of India, deeply in love with her, commissioned Jacques Guerlain to create a perfume in her honor in 1925. Always elegant and voluptuous, with a subtle blend of flowers and amber accents, Shali-
mar now comes with softer and fresher notes of bergamot, rose, jasmine and precious iris. Even Grenouillie, the original Shalimar creator, could not have imagined a more perfect scent. The niece of Thierry Wasser, perfumer exclusive for the Guerlain house since 2008, who was enamored with the whole Shalimar story, urged her uncle to create a younger and more modern Shalimar. Hence arises its restructuring. Guerlain has over 800 stamped fragrances and we cannot go without mentioning some of its most successful perfumes like L’Eau Impériale (1853) created for the Empress Eugenie; or Mitsouko (1919), the first modern fragrance, and the sparkling Champs-Elysées editions of Aqua i Ellegoria (1996). guerlain.com

his season there are two extra cool must-haves for men, besides the essential luxury items such as Ressignol boots and Salomon skis. The Zero5 ski helmet, designed by Studio Innovazione Vinaccia of Italy, is the synthesis between a motorcycle helmet and a fencing mask. The wire mesh on top, with an intermediate protective Gortex layer, allows greater heat and humidity to vent, while the integrated transparent polycarbonate visor (anti-fog/ anti-mist treated) eliminates the need for goggles. Who says skiing with a helmet on is not sexy? This Zero5 highlights your good taste and that constant commitment of yours to be the trendiest person skiing the mountain.
Contour HD 1080 is the smallest portable video camera in the world and you can record high definition video with it. Weighing only 4 ounces, the Contour HD is easily mounted on your skiing helmet, the handlebars of the bicycle, sport car, in your goggles or in almost any other place where you want to capture hands-free video (we know this can suggest some wicked ideas). The anodized aluminum body of the Contour is very tough, so you’ll be able to “immortalize” all of your outdoor, as well as underwater, adventures. You don’t have to worry about this camera wobbling all around, just get ready to film an amazing video of your daring life on the slopes.

goggles. It is always important to ski with lots of color so your friends can easily spot you by not blending in with the white of the snow slopes. Of course, we always have to wear Chanel anywhere we go, even during sport outings. That’s why we present to you this Chanel skis. We can’t stress enough that having a good pair of boots is very important when it comes to skiing. They have to be comfortable, because if not, you will not be able to show off your cool style going down the bumps. Do not worry, Salomon boots are a great option.

t seems that some women think that looking pretty and chic requires some discomfort. But we believe that when it comes to skiing, comfort and aesthetics must merge. It is equally important to stay warm, as it is to be seen fashionably dressed. So rest assured, the equipment and apparel we present to you, have both aspects covered. What first comes to mind when thinking about the cold weather? Fur! Ludger Beerbaum claimed the honours for Germany in the fifth leg of the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping Western European League series on his home turf at Stuttgart.

I
t was no walk-in-the-park afternoon for the world’s top competitors, with only six of the 39 starters finding all the answers to the demanding 13-fence first-round track set by Christa Jung. The German course designer stretched them from the first fence to the last, and the eight retirements on course were testament to the degree of difficulty. “It was not too technical but it was quite big—Christa did a good job,” Beerbaum said afterwards.
COMPLICATED Starting them off with a triple bar followed by a wall standing 1.55m high, the course was ratcheted up a notch by a line of fences that
began with a vertical which had a dark plank on top. This backed up some of the horses who then found the forward four-stride distance to the following grey oxer—1.53m high with a 1.70m spread—difficult to make. The latter proved the bogey of the day, adding faults to the score-sheets of ten riders, but there were plenty more questions to come. The water-tray oxer at six and the FEI vertical on a bending line at fence eight claimed a number of high-profile victims, while the double—vertical to oxer—at fence ten was also very influential, penalising nine horse-and-rider combinations who mostly faulted at the second element. And there was still plenty more to think about before they crossed the finish-line. The penultimate triple combination asked

The complexity of the course failed to faze young Swiss rider Janika Sprunger however, the 24 year old springing one of the surprises of the day when bringing “Uptown Boy Boy” home for the first clear of the competition when sixth into the ring.
FOLLOWED SUIT Another 15 would jump before she was joined by Ireland’s Denis Lynch and “Abbervail van het Dingeshof,” and then reigning individual European Champion, and the man who won the third leg of the current Rolex season in Lyon, France last month—Sweden’s Rolf-Goran Bengtsson—followed suit with “Quintero La Silla.” The home crowd could at last heave a sigh of relief when Marco Kutscher brought “Cornet Obolensky” home without incident. With 15 German representatives in the line-up they had watched many fail to make the cut, including three-time World Cup titleholder Marcus Ehning who retired “Noltes Kuchengirl” after leaving four fences on the floor. But when Beerbaum earned his place in the decider alongside his fellow-countryman, and Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat did likewise with “Nino des Buissonnets,” then a clash of titanic proportions was guaranteed in the race against the clock.
CRUISED HOME Sprunger led the way, and didn’t allow the pressure to get to her as she cruised home with no faults on the board in 38.34 seconds, and when Lynch’s gigantic gelding hit the grey oxer, previously fence four but now the third-last obstacle on the track, then she remained at the head of affairs.

Top: Rolf-Göran Bengtsson riding "Quintero LaSilla."
But Bengtsson set a new standard when stopping the clock on 36.55 seconds after an exciting run that saw him take a tight righthand turn to the newly-introduced Rolex oxer, the third fence on the track, and jumping the left-hand side of the wall which was four from home. Kutscher’s stallion was quick and clean, but this German partnership didn’t challenge for the lead when clearing the line in 37.37 seconds. Beerbaum, however, meant business from the outset. “The course suited my horse, there were two deciding turns to the right and she really gave me everything” he said afterwards. Quick to the third, he shaved off more valuable fractions of seconds with a daring ride to the penultimate double to clear the finish in 35.70 seconds, and that was now the target for last-to-go Guerdat. His 10 year old has a great turn of foot, but, when the turn from the wall to the following oxer didn’t come up quite right he lost time there, and with 35.93 showing on the clock as he raced through the finish he had to settle for second spot this time around, while Bengtsson slotted into third.
plentY to celeBrate Madeleine Winter-Schulze’s 10-year-old mare, “Gotha,” has been going from strength to strength in the hands of the five-time
Olympian in recent months, and produced a superb jump-off round to clinch maximum points for the 48 year-old veteran who won the prestigious series title 18 years ago. For Beerbaum, there was plenty to celebrate. “This is my fifth time to win the Grand Prix in Stuttgart and the second time with ‘Gotha’—I won with her here two years ago,” he pointed out. Talking about the jump-off he said “I expected there would be eight or ten riders in it, but with the six that got through I knew it would be fast enough and I couldn’t relax knowing that Steve was coming into the arena after me.” He plans now to compete at the Global Champions Tour Final in Abu Dhabi, and then the next leg of the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping series in Geneva, Switzerland in early December. “But ‘Gotha’ will have a bit of a break now—she deserves it!” said the rider who has moved into sixth place on the series leaderboard. This result sees Bengtsson now taking taking over at the top of the Western European League League followed by Swiss riders Pius Schwizer in second and Steve Guerdat in third. Great Britain’s Nick Skelton has collected 37 points on the US circuit in recent months and currently lies fourth ahead of Ireland’s Denis Lynch in fifth.

Woman of style ExprEssions
Marcia Mazzochi CEO for Parmigiani America Marcia Mazzochi is a recent Parmigiani acquisition, having joined their executive team last February 2011. This in no way means that Marcia Mazzochi is new to the world of Haute Horlogerie for she has previously worked with Girard-Perregaux and A. Lange & Söhne, amongst other important firms. Equ Lifestyle sat down with Marcia Mazzochi to discuss her experience as a woman in the world of watch making. by GAbriEL MArTinEz.
I think the drive is the heritage behind Michel Parmigiani’s passion for restoration. It is the synergy of his know-how, of his talent, of being able to restore pieces nobody else could restore, and thus taking that synergy and energy and bringing it into the present to our timepieces. You can see that they possess this heritage and know-how but also a design that makes them contemporary, young and dynamic. Parmegiani embodies a synthesis between its restoration heritage and its constant innovation in watch making.
CAN yOu tEll us sOmEthiNg AbOut hOw thE PArmigiANi-bugAtti COllAbOrAtiON fOr thE suPEr sPOrt wAtCh CAmE AbOut? Well, that was before my time, but apparently Bugatti was the one that approached Parmigiani, knowing our quality, tradition and heritage, and this is how the collaboration came about.
whAt is it thAt PErsONAlly mAkEs yOu PAssiONAtE AbOut thE wOrld Of wAtCh mAkiNg? I’ve been a long time in this industry and I have always liked watches, I also like clocks
very much. I personally go back in watches, and I’m passionate about them, it is a medium in which I feel comfortable. And you have the motivation of the manufacture, of going from movement, to case, to dial and finally to hand. But also those people behind the product, the master watch makers, as they go in to work everyday, their passion is contagious and it’s also very rewarding to contribute to that passion when you put a smile on their faces, as you can tell them from the marketing department things like: “We just opened up the Buenos Aires Market.” So, it all goes hand in hand, without them we wouldn’t be here or without Michel Parmigiani and his creativity, because, you know, it’s a very unique story, but basically, our collective passion stems from Michel Parmigiani and his unique talent for restoration.
yEs, thE lEgACy iN wAtCh rEstOrAtiON thAt yOu wErE tElliNg us AbOut. But not only watches, also other pieces like Automatons and a bejeweled pistol from the 1700’s which even had a little signing bird on it. This requires a lot of sensitivity and a talent for restoration.

Latin American markets seem to go for bigger, showier, more masculine watches, but focusing on the Northern Hemisphere it depends on a lot of factors, such as advertising or product placement; in general for Parmigiani all markets seem to be picking up.

Men might still seem predominant in the executive teams and thus it would appear that most of the people in this industry are men; but let’s not forget that a lot of heads in marketing are women. For me, on a personal level, it has been my knowledge my work and my passion for watches which has launched me in this industry regardless of anything else and I feel honored to work in a firm like Parmigiani.

To dine aT Le Cinq is undoubtedly an astounding affair, a culinary experience without comparison. To enter its premises is, by itself, an enchanting visual treat provided by an explosion of baroque, neoclassic and contemporary nostalgic style that takes one back to the Versailles court of Louis xiv, or Napoleon iii’s second empire. The chandeliers hanging from celestial blue domes, the golden and silver touches on white and pearl colored walls; the purple and mauve flares provided by the flowers on the tables, the exquisite tapestry and the furniture in dark wood; all contributes to enhancing a truly aristocratic vibe. Chef Eric Briffard, who took the helm of the kitchen at Le Cinq last year, displays culinary confidence that fuses traditional French cooking with contemporary methods of production. He enhances a gamut of gastronomical colors, textures and flavors and does not hesitate incorporating elements from other continental culinary traditions, as is the case with Spanish and Italian cuisine.
Le Cinq offers a tasting menu, specifically designed for those who feel insecure about ordering a la carte. The tasting menu features some amuse bouche consisting of marinated octopus with jamón serrano, or a melon and red pepper gazpacho; Gi-
rolle mushrooms with apricots and fresh almonds together with buttered asparagus and carrots topped with a plum vinaigrette can be the entrée, followed by a second dish of Fregula pasta with octopus, shrimps and fried sage or chilled cream zucchini with Burrata cheese and summer truffles. The main course consists of a saddle and chop of tender milk fed lamb stuffed with spinach, pine nuts and peppercorns. A selection of goat cheese, camembert, époisses, and blue cheese precede the pre-dessert of lychee foam over fresh raspberries, followed by and iced George V fraisier with strawberry granita and lime and basil sorbet accompanied with a strawberry stuffed tomato. With two Michelin stars, this legendary restaurant, custodian of Parisian luxury, requires a mandatory visit for those knowledgeable in the art of good food, when visiting the city. We are certain that the much-deserved third star will soon come to Le Cinq. 31, avenue George V, 75008 París, Francia Tel.: 33 (0) 1 49 52 70 00 fourseasons.com/paris/dining

mier, on-demand charter aircraft carrier, providing the corporate community and leisure travelers with private aircraft charters to anywhere in the world. Founded in 1992 by Henry Schubach, the firm employs a team of highly experienced pilots, mechanics, and support staff. Its fleet of managed aircraft includes a Gulfstream IV, two wide-bodied Bombardier Challenger 601s, five Hawkers, a Lear 35, two factory-new CJ3s, two CJ1s and a King Air 200. Most importantly, this is a company with values and that is willing to give back to the community. Earlier this year, as part of the company’s year-long “One Cent Per Mile” fundraising campaign benefiting orphaned animals, Schubach Aviation pledged a minimum of $8,000 to Helen Woodward Animal Center, a non-profit organization that provides humane care and adoption of orphaned animals, as well as animal-centered
educational and therapeutic programs for people. Thanks to better-than-projected 2011 sales and the generosity of its clients, Schubach Aviation has so far donated $7,632 to Helen Woodward Animal Center. Based on the mileage to date, the company expects to exceed its goal and donate closer to $10,000. “We’re very grateful to our customers who have climbed aboard this campaign and helped us support such an important community cause,” said Henry Schubach, whose beloved golden retriever, Bob, greets customers at the office every day. In addition to making monetary contributions, Schubach Aviation has promoted Helen Woodward Animal Center’s fundraising events in its full-page print ads, which have featured champion surf dogs Dozer, an English Bulldog, and Nani, a Bernese Mountain Dog, posing inside one of the firm’s Challenger 601 private jets (as seen in the picture). Of the 80 dogs who competed at the sixth annual Helen Woodward Animal Center Surf Dog Surfathon held September 25th at Dog Beach in Del Mar, Dozer rode in at third place, while Nani fetched second place, just behind first-place-winner Buddy, a Jack Russell
Terrier who at age 14 became the first inductee into the Surf Dog Hall of Fame. Schubach Aviation participated as a sponsor of the event, which raised more than $100,000 for the Center. In February, a team of nine Schubach Aviation employees and their family members were honored as the top fundraising team at the second annual Helen Woodward Animal Center 5K Puppy Run/Walk held along a scenic, coastal route in Solana Beach. The Schubach Aviation team raised the largest amount by any corporate team. Additionally, Schubach Aviation was a prominent participant of the organization’s “Broadway Tails” Spring Fling held in June, sponsoring the main entry martini luge. schubachaviation.com

I
t’s hard to conceive that a single place could encompass luxury, tradition, nature and contemporary design, but this is possible when it comes to Bavaria’s very own Das Kranzbach. It is an emblematic hotel located in a hidden valley 1030 meters above sea level. The story goes like this: Mary Isabel Portman, an aristocratic lady from London, bought the “Kranzbach prairie near Garmisch” and commissioned the construction of a castle in 1913. Back then Mary Portman studied music at Leipzig where she was a regular at the social gatherings of famous musicians of the time. The English architects Detmar Blow and Ferdinand Billerey, two known exponents of the “Arts and Crafts” movement, designed the Kranzbach castle. Mary Portman had in mind to build a country manor where she could entertain her close circle of musician friends. However, the First World War soon brought her plans to a halt. Mary Portman never saw the completion of the Kranzbach castle. In 1931, the Dortmund Evangelical Church discovered the fascinating building when they were searching for a holiday and convalescence home for young people from the heavily industrialized Ruhr area. In late 2003, the Church sold the property to its current owners, who re-opened its doors as a “specialized Wellness Hotel” in 2007. Nowadays this legendary dwelling is home to Das Kranzbach, a European retreat haven with spacious lounge areas, private spaces, cozy rooms and breathtaking views of the natural surroundings. An integral and central part of the Kranzbach experience is its traditional treatment spa. This is well balanced with the hotel’s other activities, such as hikes in the wilderness. Kranzbach’s cuisine is focused on providing a healthy, natural and hearty cuisine with the use of prime, fresh and local ingredients for their traditional or vegetarian options. Skiing might not seem an integral part of Das Kranzbach, but don’t forget that you are on a plateau in the middle of the Alps. 82493 Kranzbach near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany Ph.: 49 (0) 8823 92 8000 daskranzbach.de

Thursday’s Thrills: Las Vegas National Welcome Jumper Classic
Top: Francie Steinwedell-Carvin and Prentiss Partner’s "Taunus." bottom: Opening ceremonies for the highlight $50,000 CSI-W were followed by a Parade of Nations with an introduction of each grand prix rider.
Twenty-nine horse and rider combinations competed in a one round competition against the clock in the $31,000 Las Vegas National Welcome Jumper Classic, presented by Summit General Insurance Agency, but Steinwedell-Carvin and "Taunus" took the Top Dollar. Eleventh to go, Francie Steinwedell-Carvin and Prentiss Partner’s "Taunus" set a solid time, clean in 60.25. Second to last in the arena, Rusty Stewart and the stellar "Bristol" (Grey Fox Farm, owner) gave it a good try, clearing the course in 62.10 for second place. Five more pairs jumped clean over the Anthony D’Ambrosio designed course— Kirsten Coe on Ilan Ferder’s "Baronez," Michelle Parker on Tula Pinnella’s "Xei Ha," Michelle Spadone on Morgan Hill Partner’s "Uwwalon" and Redfield Farm’s "Coco" and Danielle Korsch on her own "San Diego"— finishing third through seventh respectively. Steinwedell-Carvin shared how her relationship with "Taunus" has blossomed of late:
“He likes to go around on the flat with his head up and I would work so hard to get him to get round. After some round pen work I did with a cowboy a light came on without me realizing it, I had a transition of trust that I could let go. I relaxed so he relaxed and it worked.”
Friday Night Fun: The 1.35m Speed Classic The South Point Equestrian arena was on fire as twenty-nine horse and rider combinations haling from all over the world raced for the win in the $20,000 1.35m Speed Classic, presented by CardFlex. Previous to this event, the kids had a ton of fun at the JustWorld International Horseless Horse Show and the precious leadliners stole the crowd’s heart. The track created by D’Ambrosio offered several options for speed, and riders picked a variety of tracks for success. Twelve of 29 were fault free and just over five seconds separated the winning ride from the eighth place ribbon. First to go American Karl Cook set the pace aboard Signe Ostby’s "No-

Canadian John Pearce on Alison Moore's "Chianto" returned first in the second round. With a surprising two rails, the pair finished seventh. Ali Nilforushan of Iran on "Warco van de Halhoeve" (Katie Harris, owner) scored four faults. Enter American John McConnell aboard Rancho Corazon's "Katie Riddle." The well-matched pair sailed smoothly around the shortened course clean in 40.57, taking the lead. A short-lived lead however, as the young and quick Karl Cook on "ASB Conquistador" (Signe Ostby, owner) followed with another double clean effort in 38.56. The tried and true team of Rusty Stewart and "Bristol" (Grey Fox Farm, owner) had trouble out of the turn to the double, resulting in a refusal. The petite Danish rider Emilie Martinsen rode the powerful "Toscane" well (J.a.j Van Rijiswijk, owner), finishing double clean in 45.16 earning fourth place. American Kirsten Coe on Ilan Ferder's "Baronez" lowered the height of the end vertical for four, ultimately sixth. Last but not least, Brazilian Eduardo Menezes entered on Francisco Pasquel's "Calavda." On a horse he'd only been riding a few months, Menezes was double clean, stopping the clock in 38.15, for another sweet Vegas victory. The crowd went crazy as Menezes crossed the finish line. Once again the final ride clinched the top prize.

Truly a super Saturday at the Las Vegas National. The evening began by crowning a champion in the PCHA Victor Hugo-Vidal Adult Medal Finals. In its first year at this indoor location, the class challenged riders with built-in tests. Three riders finished the first two rounds within three percentage points of each other and returned for a work-off. Called in second, Lorri Quiett on "Abigail" performed well and ultimately earned the top spot. Quiett and third place finisher Lorena Christie train with Carolyn Biava of First Field Farm. Karoline Sauls finished second and was trained by Tasha Visokay of Karen Healey Stables. Last proved its prowess again in the exciting $10,000 Winning Round Classic, presented by Royal Champion. Twenty-seven couples gave it a go and nine completed the course fault free. Unique to the Winning Round Format, riders return according to their score and time in the first round. Since all were clean, time determined the order of go in the second round. Known for speed, it was no surprise that Karl Cook and Jonkheer Z (Signe Ostby, owner) was the last to come back in the second round. Shaving almost two seconds off Kirsten Coe and Vernon G's leading time, Cook took the win at the last second. Opening ceremonies for the highlight $50,000 CSI-W event entertained young and old Kids large and small leaped up to 1.20m in the JustWorld International High Jump competition. The ceremonies culminated with the Girl Scouts of Las Vegas marching in with the American flag for the National Anthem. The twenty-four entries in the $50,000 Last Vegas National Grand Prix, presented by Summit General Insurance Agency, were a balance of eleven male and ten female competitors representing six nations. Over half the class rose to the occasion, with eight moving on to the jump-off round and five scored just four faults.

Renovo bike
Long before Light metaLs were available for industrial use, bicycles were made out of wood. The first known wood bike is thought to have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci, and while there is still a lot of controversy surrounding the discovery of Leonardo’s original model, one thing remains clear: the popularity of the traditional wooden bicycle is gaining momentum. All over the world designers are conceiving new models that have practical uses as a mode of alternative transportation. Renovo Hardwood Bicycles combine the magic of high-end technology with manual craftsmanship, in order to create a wide range of hollow wood and laminated bamboo bicycles. Renovo designers claim that theirs is “the smoothest bike you’ll ever ride.” Some people think of wooden frames as works of art, too delicate for daily use, and that their performance cannot be compared to those of metal or carbon fiber. But nature can prove them wrong, since wood has unique engineering properties that guarantee a superior quality ride and greater durability. There are a number of other reasons for swapping to a Renovo. On the one hand, they are much lighter: the frame weights between 3 and 4 lbs, while a metallic frame is around 15 or 16 lbs. Wood absorbs vibration better than steel, aluminum or carbon, producing a uniquely smooth ride. On the other hand, wood has a longer fatigue life and a dent or scratch won’t escalate into a terminal-frame crack as with other materials. They are totally weather proof, since they’re sealed inside and out with epoxy, then given a finish with linear polyurethane—the same clear coat you’ll find on expensive cars. As with any other bicycle, it can be adjusted to your requirements by tailoring the stiffness and steering capabilities to satisfy your riding needs and personal weight. And last but not least, wood is sustainable, recyclable, biodegradable, and leaves only a tiny carbon footprint, while the primary production of steel, aluminum, titanium and carbon fiber are incredibly polluting. So, if you want a beautiful bicycle as your everyday vehicle, the Renovo is your best bet, and, between rides, many owners park their Renovos in their living rooms or offices as art work they can enjoy. renovobikes.com

You don’t need to be a castaway to enjoy the privacy and isolation of a deserted tropical island; you just need to get yourself on a plane to Fregate Private Island. Situated four grades south of the equatorial line and a 20-minute light carrier flight, this private island resort comprised of a mere 16 villas, plus a presidential suite, is truly the epitome of privacy and exclusive luxury. In addition to being reclusive, the resort fosters an environmental commitment to the preservation of the endemic flora and fauna of the island, making this a unique niche of natural beauty. Fregate Island Ecological Program was established with the purpose of mending 200 years of man made environmental damage, through the establishment of a native species nursery and by regenerating the soil and endemic vegetation of the island, thus restoring its natural equilibrium. The resort’s temporary guests are the only inhabitants of the island, which are kept at a minimum number so as to minimize the environmental impact and foster privacy and exclusivity. One-day visits are not allowed. The villas at Fregate Private Island are equipped, amongst other amenities with hot tubs, plunge pools and a butler who will be at your disposal at any moment and at any point on the island. The villas’ architecture and interiors are a mixture of rustic splendor and African elegance, achieved through the use of local construction materials, such as mahogany wood. The villas blend in effortlessly with the island’s natural surroundings.

The activities at Fregate are diverse and range from nature walks, mountain biking, tennis, volleyball and yoga classes. Aquatic activities include snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing or fishing. The island also has a gym and spa as well as a yacht club; kids play area, a library, museum, gallery, boutique and even a wedding chapel. ne can never underestimate the importance of having a realm of luxury and Caribbean idyll close at hand. It can provide you with an impromptu beach getaway whenever you might need a break from large urban conglomerations. Located 90 minutes away from any mayor East Coast city, Bermuda is a Caribbean jewel with pink sand beaches, unmatched weather, historical landmarks and unrestricted golf possibilities. Bermuda fuses African and British cultural influences that are the legacy of its colonial past, manifested in the islander’s love of cricket as well as their Calypso music and good dancing rhythm. If luxury and beach relaxation is your game, then Rosewood Tucker’s Point, in the Hamilton Parish, is your dwelling place when visiting this overseas territory. Inaugurated in 2009, this hotel plus, spa, golf course, beach club and residences cannot hide a certain American touch in its architecture and interiors. Tucker’s Point exudes sophistication without seeming too formal and constrictive. Each one of its 88 rooms and suites are decorated in a sort of British beach destination vibe, though we must state that the room interiors are more Hamptons than Brighton. The bathrooms have marble and dark wood finishes. Rooms are equipped with plasma TVs, an iPod dock, Egyptian cotton sheets and mini-bar amongst other amenities. If the 200-hectare golf course is not really your thing, the spa, fitness center or the tennis court could be. But in case not even the latter sounds enticing, the resort’s pools are truly memorable in terms of their infrastructure. We can assure you that the infinity pool, with its view of the longest private beach stretch in all of Bermuda and the Hotel pool, with its Ocean view with its fringed palm trees, will certainly catch your eye. The hotel restaurant, The Point, is considered one of the best on the island. Chef Serge Botelli is in charge of a kitchen that delights its costumers with an international cuisine made with local fresh produce. The restaurant has ten person tasting menus; this informal eating experience includes wine pairings as well as a look behind the curtains at the Chef ’s kitchen, where you can watch Chef Botelli in action creating exquisite culinary delights. 60 Tucker’s Point Dr., Hamilton Parish, HS 02 Bermuda Tel.: 441 298 4000 rosewoodtuckerspoint.com

Divine Dining
Laid back San FranciSco is certainly serious about food as Chef Daniel Patterson demonstrates in the ethics and ideology behind his two Michelin star restaurant, Coi. Haute cuisine, sustainable agriculture and local, wild and organic food culture makes dining no laughing matter; instead, it renders it an art. Get ready to yield to vegetables’ new spectacular comeback and step aside from the boring stake and starchy extras please. Freshly grown, organic produce and simple cooking, is the secret behind the California Cuisine revolution, started by Alice Walters at the now legendary Berkeley based Chez Panisse. Coi is another turn of the screw in the latest development of this movement, adding diversity and complexity to a trend that otherwise ran the risk of becoming stagnant.
Patterson, a self taught chef and winner of a James Beard award amongst others, considers that his cooking style shares the concerns of “New Nordic cuisine,” that of using fresh and wild local ingredients. Patterson does not feel this as restrictive; quite the contrary, it is a great stimulus for him. He considers that “when you cook with ingredients from everywhere, you lose the specialness of the things you have locally.” According to the 2012 Michelin guide, Coi’s interiors are minimal, organic and elegant. Subdued earthy tones and simple lines prevail in the restaurant and contrast well with the colorful textures and flavors of the food, which is comprised of ingredients such as organic legumes, wild leaves, flowers, barks, roots and mushrooms, local fish, seaweed, pastured meat and small farmer’s
free-range poultry and eggs. Another compromise of Coi is to cook with the minimal use of energy possible. Coi’s dishes are exquisite and, although definitely not vegetarian, are “plant centered.” Patterson says that cooking with plants is “like painting with way more colors” and Coi’s cusine can get pretty creative. Perhaps some of the restaurant’s most emblematic dishes are its “beet rose” a rose made out of roasted beetroot over rosewater granité with yogurt, and the inverted tomato mousse tart with basil pesto base and black olives topping. Chef Patterson focuses Coi’s dining experience on an eleven-course prix fixe menu and has done away with the a la carte option. An eclectic selection of three hundred and fifty wines, as well as sake, house cocktails and artisan beers covers the wide range of pairing suggestions that the house sommelier Andrew Mosbiech can offer 373 Broadway, San Francisco, CA 94133. Jürgen Dahlmanns The Birth of a Rug Star
German designer Jürgen Dahlmanns, a self confessed “rug addict,” is the brains behind the Berlin based company Rug Star. Now in his forties, Jürgen has transitioned from an early start as an architect, to a successful ethical entrepreneur in the world of textiles.
“We love each rug and the people we work with, so since I opened the workshop ten years ago, I’ve spent March/April and October/November there, to develop the new designs and innovations.”
A trip to Nepal at the age of 23 acquainted Dahlmanns with Tibetan textiles and was the beginning of a love affair that has developed into a thriving business known as Rug Star. It boasts considerable design awards as well as many clients around the world. Rug Star has stores in Berlin, Augsburg and Zürich and trading partners in twenty-seven different countries. It has been featured in the specialized design press around the world, such as Modern Carpets and Textiles magazine, amongst others.
What’s in the making? Rug Star creates hand knotted Tibetan Rugs with fair-trade raw materials: Tibetan highland wool, Chinese silk, and Himalayan hemp and nettle fiber. It comprises different rug collections that denote an eclectic mix of textures pairing exquisite design and meticulous manufacture. The rugs range from the classic and conservative, to the solid and colorful, they can also display contemporary lines and daring patterns and forms.

What sets this designer apart? Dahlmanns’ rugs possess a very unique aura, since they seem to fuse the authenticity and delightfulness of an exquisite handcraft with the sophisticated feel and edge of Berlin design. It is very difficult not to become a “rug addict” once you own a Rug Star piece.

exploitative, inhuman and unjust labor conditions, Dahlmanns has set himself apart, not only due to his outstanding rug designs, but also because of his use of fair-trade materials, traditional rug making methods and his socially conscious work ethics. All of Dahlmanns’ rugs are made in his two workshops in Nepal by a staff of six hundred Nepalese workers. The workshops are light and airy workspaces and its workers have health care—thanks to the creation of a small hospital—, and also a day care center and school for the worker’s children. Giving special attention to the personal well being of each worker and their specific needs, as well as creating a nurturing work environment, Rug Star is able to create outstanding rugs of the highest quality. Dahlmanns says: “We love each rug and the people we work with, so since I opened the workshop ten years ago, I’ve spent March/April and October/November there, to develop the new designs and innovations.”

And before a myriad of cliché images of Out of Africa pop into your mind, please read on. How about some cheetah spotting in South Africa? Or, for that matter, any of the big five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Phinda Private Game Reserve encompasses 23,000 hectares of prime wilderness land in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and harbors an impressive patchwork of seven natural habitats or ecosystems that run from woodland, grassland, wetland and forest as well as scattered mountain ranges, river courses, marshes and pans. Unspoiled beaches and beautiful reefs are also nearby. If adventure’s your game, Phinda can get all-terrain and aquatic as well. Accommodation in the wilderness does not necessarily mean you will have to sacrifice your fondness for luxury, Phinda boasts six unique lodges that adapt perfectly to the habitats in which they are situated. Thus Forest Lodge is a shaded sanctuary deep in the heart of the rare dry sand forest; Mountain Lodge displays spectacular views of the reserve; Vlei Lodge, situated at the edge of the forest, overlooks the wetlands and Rock Reserve is suspended over a stunning lush deep valley and faces Leopard Rock; Zuka Lodge and The Homestead are the reserve’s luxurious villas, which offer a “home out of home” experience for families, or large groups that wish to spend a safari together. Luxury and intimate natural dwellings aside, the safari at Phinda is truly rewarding. Cheetah spotting—a species reintroduced to the area after a fifty-year absence—is the “house specialty,” but lions, leopards and elephants can also be viewed and photographed on a daily basis. The endangered grass eating white rhino and the even
more at peril shrub grazing black rhino have been revived from the brink of extinction and thrive at Phinda. The nyala antelope, as well as the tiny suni, are also some of the rare species you shouldn’t miss. The Zulu Kingdom awaits you with history, hospitality and, most of all, adventure in the wonderful South African wild. DI SAVOIA ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE never thought of yourself an epicurean, you have always considered that eating transcends being a mere vital necessity. Dining is a creative process that allows you to display your gastronomic sapience and your fine taste in wines. We believe it is high time for you to ponder on a much-anticipated return to what is basic in the culinary arts, a return to Italy. However, what we are about to offer to you is by no means homey or rustic. Principe di Savoia Hotel embodies the very definition of a Grand hotel. At some point its decoration and architecture might seem Art Nouveau, at others Belle Époque; in fact, it’s Stile Lyberty. The hotels interiors would seem to have risen from the most recondite dreams of some fin de siècle enfant terrible or some modernist artist. Let’s be honest here, frugal tastes might find it over the top, but frugality might not best describe your lifestyle, right?

Today, Principe di Savoia is managed by the prestigious Dorchester Group, which have been trusted with the task of maintaining the hotel’s legacy as a distinguished and exclusive site in the Italian capital of industry, fashion and telecommunications. Chef Cadei fuses traditional Lombardian cuisine with Mediterranean flavors and the restaurant emphasizes the use of fresh and seasonal produce in all of its food. During the summers you might be able to dine on figs, mozzarella and raw prawns; Gilthead with yellow peach salad marinated with mint, baby spinach and toasted almonds and apricot ratatouille. Lake AUSTIN

WE KNOW YOU LEAD a hectic existence and that you value high-end destinations for your vacations. This is why we believe that if you are looking for relief from the stressful routine, Lake Austin Spa will be your next destination to get away from it all. OK, we will be the first to admit that it never occurred to you, or us, that Texas would be the place to relax, but do keep on reading, we think that soon enough it will not seem like such a bizarre idea. Situated at the heart of Texas Hill Country, 30 minutes away from downtown Austin, Lake Austin Spa and Resort comprises 19 hectares of lakeshore in wooded areas. This isn’t just another American spa; this is the quintessential spa. It’s not without great merit that this spa has been considered as the number one in the United States, according to the readers of Condé Nast Traveler. Yes, we know that wearing a dinner jacket has never been too much of a fuss for you, but if you come to Lake Austin Spa, its better you leave the blazer at home. You’ll probably wear a spa robe, sports or yoga clothes instead, when not donning a pair of hiking boots. This is a place for relaxation. We recommend you take a good novel instead of your iPad and bring a resolution to leave your everyday troubles at home. You are here to find peace and tranquility. A multimillion-dollar renovation in 2004, created an expansion of 25,000 square meters, giving the Lakehouse Spa spacious locker areas, outdoor swimming pool, cabins, hot tubs, 30 different treatment areas and beauty salon

services. Just in case one swimming pool might not be enough, Lake Austin has another one, this one indoors and junior Olympic in size, found at the Pool Barn. The Spa also has two hectares of gardens and aquatic terraces. The 40 suites found at the shore of the lake, were also remodeled, with another multimillion-dollar investment in 2008. The suites have been decorated with casual elegance and
local handcrafted furnishings. The suites are equipped with Egyptian cotton sheets, hand made quilts, the resort’s lavender trademark products, high definition TV, iPod dock, and WiFi internet. Some suites also boast a hot tub and wild flower gardens. Executive chef Stephane Beaucamp is in charge of cooking up three daily meals that can be enjoyed in the dinning room, at the LakeHouse Spa or the Aster Café. Chef Beaucamp’s cuisine fuses French influences with local “inspirations” to create healthy dishes. Cooking classes can also be arranged on a weekly basis. To quote Lake Austin, this resort combines: “the luxury of a world class spa with the warmth of a best friend’s lake house.” Aren’t you glad you made the acquaintance of your Texan new best friend? 1705 South Quinlan Park Road Austin, Texas 78732 Ph.: 01 (512) 372 7300 lakeaustin.com

Castille STRATEGICALLY SITUATED BETWEEN the Place de la Concord and the Place Vendôme at Rue Cambon—right next to Chanel—, Hotel Castille Paris is your mandatory chic operative base for your saunters at the haute couture district, as well as for the rest of the city, in your next visit to Paris. This is urban tourism at its highest. Elegant and sophisticated, Castille Paris exudes the eternal attractive of an aristocratic dwelling of the eighteenth century. One of its main hospitable characteristics is its mixture of Parisian charisma and Italian warmth. Even though this might seem potentially dangerous, when it comes to Castille Paris, it is a spot on amalgam. The hotel building by itself is worthy of the utmost admiration: it boasts an antiquity of three hundred years. Originally it was the residence and the gardens of the Marechal du Luxembourg, later remodeled in 1785 by the Comte de Brienne. The street where the hotel stands was named Rue Cambon in 1876. An overzealous custodian of its historical legacy and continental tradition, the Castille Paris maintains an impeccable aesthetic as well as a superb art and antique collection. Even the modern furnishings, decoration and comforts add an air of antique aristocratic sophistication. A hundred and eight rooms, including twenty-one suites, comprise Castille Paris. They are distributed in two separate wings: the Ópera
France
Wing, decorated in a black and beige atmosphere, and the Rivoli Wing, with a more pronounced neo-classic vibe. The hotel is equipped with WiFi throughout the whole building. Other accommodations include a gym, where you can receive a complimentary map of short jogging distances around the area, limousine service and a golf course, which is only twenty-five minutes away. The rooms have plasma TVs and Nintendo Wiis amongst other amenities.

A Tribute to
Hickstead
The Little Stallion That CouldÉ
I
“He was a very, very special horse—very exciting to watch. He did everything for the people who were watching him. He enjoyed a loud crowd,” Lamaze said of his best friend.
9Equ_(A)Hickstead.indd 82
t’s not often we take the time to reflect on what makes the sport of show jumping uniquely different from all other toplevel sports. Both horse and rider share the athletic endeavor. As number one ranked rider in the world Eric Lamaze reasoned, it is not just a golfer and his club or a tennis player and his racket, but two beings connected as one, working in tandem to achieve that idyllic feeling of synchronicity. To find that horse of a lifetime, the one that completes your sentences by giving you his all every time you ask, changes your career, your life forever. "Hickstead," a Dutch warmblood stallion that stood a mere 16 hands, defined the quintessential equine described above. When his heart failed from a sudden acute aortic rupture on November 6th, 2011, in Verona, Italy, the entire show jumping world mourned the loss of this fabulous animal. After completing a round in his first indoor competition of the season, the Rolex Grand Prix of Verona CSI-W, the 2010 World Equestrian Games Best Horse simply collapsed while walking out of the show arena. Sparing his rider injury, the little horse whose heart was bigger than life, gently went down so not to hurt his best friend of seven years, Canadian Eric Lamaze.
The horse received impeccable care and was in great shape, with plans to represent Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games. “As he finished the round, he just collapsed and sort of fell beside me,” recalled Lamaze. “It is hard for me to remember second by second, but I believe he collapsed in a way that he made sure he did not injure me in the process.” And to those who would dare wonder, Lamaze assured any naysayer. “He was a horse that was competing on an international circuit at a very high level, and another Olympics was not out of range for him. I would not have taken him if he wasn’t in the best of shape.” Although there are a number of talented horses competing in the world today, only a select group has the superb combination of heart, scope, soundness and desire to win time and time again. Ask any show jumping fan as well as any top-level rider, and among their favorites without a doubt would be the little stallion that won not only the world’s top competitions but also all of our hearts. Proof of this occurred directly after his tragic death, when all the competitors gathered in the arena to pay tribute to Hickstead in a moment of silence.

Top: Eric Lamaze riding "Hickstead" at the Spruce Meadows Masters in Clagary where he won the CN Grand Prix. Bottom: The fabulous pair en route to a gold medal at the Beijing Olympic Games. Qualifier.
HISTORY Together this team not only won several major grand prix titles, including Spruce Meadows (2007 and 2011), Geneva (2008), Aachen (2010), La Baule (2011), and Rome (2011), but Individual Gold and Team Silver medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Individual Bronze at the 2010 World Equestrian Games, and Team Silver and Individual Bronze at the 2007 Pan American Games. However the relationship did not begin as a match made in heaven. By Hamlet-Jomara and out of Eckstein, Hickstead was born in the spring of 1996 in the Netherlands. Purchased in 2004 by John Fleischhacker’s Ashland Stables and Lamaze’s Torrey Pines Stables, Lamaze worked with the stallion to bring him along. Lamaze admitted, “We weren’t happy with him after the purchase. He was a very difficult horse. He didn’t like the water. He was very spooky. There were many times I was going to give up. I thought it would never work. We knew about his talent when we bought him but we thought his character was going to stop him from being a great horse.” Lamaze notes that once Hickstead had a taste of a few victories, he really loved it and it made him better every single time. This occurred within three years after that fateful purchase. The pair’s last major victory was the $1 Million CN International at the Spruce Meadows Masters in September in front of 89,632 show jumping fans. The crowd went crazy for the Canadian pair that had won the Olympic Gold. Lamaze and Hickstead had competed in the $1 million CN International for the past five consecutive years, always finishing in the top five. Once the little 16 hand stallion learned that he loved to win, he earned almost $4 million in only a handful of years. During a recent press conference at The Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, Lamaze explained, “Many people say that you become a bit like your horse, and your horse gets a bit like yourself when you have a very strong relationship. I think we had a personality a bit alike, we were two winners, we loved to win and we had the same energy, which turned into incredible things. I’ve accomplished a lot of the goals that I wanted to accomplish in my life—thanks to Hickstead. Hickstead made my career.”
With a stable full of talented horses, Lamaze still has a job to do. What the future brings is not certain, but when asked, Lamaze, 43, does have one goal remaining before he retires. “I’d like to go to another Olympics for Canada.” He and his team are considering all the effort it will take to find another superstar. Speaking of the team, a choked-up Lamaze concluded the Toronto press conference thanking everyone who participated in Hickstead’s career, from blacksmiths to shippers and all in between. It takes a strong team. Though he cannot be replaced, we certainly hope to see some top talent from a percentage of the 100 foals by Hickstead worldwide. As for Lamaze, we also hope that he has some young equine friends in his path that will do their best to answer his questions, fulfill his final goal and live up to the name of that little stallion that could.
LAMAZE LOOKS BACK. BUT FORWARD? It all happened so fast for Lamaze—one minute you’re on top of the world, literally, the number one ranked rider in the world—and the next, your horse of a lifetime, your best friend, is gone.

After a 21-year absence, the US Women’s Open returned to Texas, with some of the world’s top level players competing in a highlevel woman’s championship at the Houston Polo Club. This was a game packed with excitement and the event boasted Cartier glamour, as well as the presence of its Fall 2011 sponsors— Tavaero Jet, Land Rover, Gates Ranch, and Frank Crystal & Company, amongst others.
