pilgrimage for Ford’s followers. On the first floor, they are met by an exquisite and elegant design, reminiscent of the hall of Tom’s London residence, and on the second level they are surprised by three private rooms in which they can drink champagne while an Italian tailor takes their measurements. In this gallery of fine dressing, Ford acts as a guide trough an exhaustive fashion journey designed just for men, via bespoke suits, diamond cufflinks, ebony-rimmed glasses and gowns that will make you feel flamboyant. Also, Ford has recently launched an exclusive line of fragrances under the name Private Blend, with the new Azure Lime scent. This eau de parfum captures the quiet and glamorous style of life at Mustique, a small island in the southern Caribbean. The trace of Tom Ford is not limited to glamorous boutiques; it is also imprinted on James Bond film history. Daniel Craig’s fascination with the suits made by this American designer was the decisive reason why Ford designs took over the wardrobe of the new Bond in Quantum of Solace. Ford, who has shown that his creativity is not confined to suits and shirts, has started a new venture: a film in which he is co-producer and screenwriter. The film is an adaptation of A Single Man, a novel by Christopher Isherwood published in 1964.

EVERYTHING THAT THIS GURU of modern masculine style touches turns into gold. Regarded as one of the most famous and influential designers in history, Tom Ford studied art history at the University of New York. Of course, that was before finding his true calling: fashion. That is why he moved to Paris to work as the creative director at Yves Saint-Laurent, and then to Milan, where he was the cornerstone of Gucci’s recovery. The label went from losing $30 million a year, to earning more than $160 million in over two years, thanks to this young American diamond. Ford came to Gucci as designer of women’s clothing. His giant strides soon made him the design director of the company. This new position meant he was responsible for the design of all brand products, the company’s image, its advertising, and the design of Gucci stores. Ford reinvented the shopping experience by creating the shop/club, now universally spread. However, due to problems with the new direction of Gucci Group, the Texan said goodbye to the house in 2004. In 2005, a year after his dramatic departure from Gucci, Ford announced the creation of Tom Ford: the label, supported by former president and chief executive of Gucci Group, Domenico de Sole. Bent on succeeding and building his name as a recognized brand, that year Tom Ford opened a store at 845 Madison Avenue, New York. The store is now a place of

BOOTS PLAY A CRUCIAL ROLE while in riding and give you the right comfort and ease which makes you love the activity more. Not only comfort but also safety needs to be taken into consideration when buying riding boots. It is important that you choose a high quality pair of boots. This is extremely necessary because of freak accidents where there are chances of the foot getting caught in the stirrup, leading to many hazardous situations while you are mounting the horse. The best riding boots are the ones which rise high till the knees which in turn helps in protecting the legs from being drawn by the leather part of the saddle. These boots have a uniquely designed toe along with heels which helps the boot from slipping from the stirrup. Choosing a pair of quality tall riding boots can be a time consuming process. It is important to do research before finally making a purchase. Here are some valuable tips to keep in mind when shopping for a new pair of riding boots: Determine specific needs. The type of boots you will need to buy depends on how they will be used. Consider the climate, season and amount of time spent in the saddle. Many boots are designed to be good for more than one thing, so it is possible to find boots that are weather proof with good traction that are also very comfortable while riding. The height of the shoe is of prime importance and as the heel of the shoe wears off with time, it is sensible to buy shoes with heels that are slightly taller than what you would normally wear. Know your size. Make the effort to find a local store that sells tall riding boots in order to determine your size. Most stores will have well trained individuals that can help find the right fit for you, and can order many items if they are not currently in stock. So when looking for equestrian riding boots, you need to take care of some facts like when you wear the boot no gaps should be around your foot area and the inner layer of the shoe. There should just enough space to be able to wriggle you toes. Your heel should feel easy on the inner layer of the sole of the shoe. There are many name brands to choose from. Pay close attention to customer reviews to get a good overall opinion. The internet is an excellent tool for doing product research. Well known are Fabbri, Parlenti, Ariat and Vogel. The broader companies are Tucci, Milo Felline, Casa De Botas and EIKI.

SPRING IS THE BEST TIME of the year to show off your curves. It is the perfect season to be wearing new colorful trends. If there is somewhere where you have to look stylish and feminine, it is the beach. For me this is the place that expects you to be as in as you can, therefore it is good time to start thinking about your ideal bikini or looking for the perfect swimsuit for your body type. Here are some trendy tips that will help you to choose a great outfit for those trips to the beach about to happen. This 2011 comes with endless options for you. For women with a classic look, the simple one-piece swimsuit is the option. The monochromatic style is always trendy, but you must be sure of choosing a color that matches with

we also love them! Accessories help us imprint our personality on garments which are usually designed for the masses and not for individuals. Accessories are our best tool for appropriating a wide variety of dresses, slacks, suits and other clothes whose fabrics do not have a personality of their own. A good pair of shoes, a purse and the perfect jewelry can instantly transform the dullest of outfits into one worthy of the red carpet. Whether the clothes be classic, elegant or sober, the right accessories will give them a new twist. With high heels you can revolutionize any outfit into an elegant or provocative look; you can also give that little black dress a fresh look by matching it with a colorful purse, and even if you wear the same clothes you can

achieve spectacular results just by changing your accessories. Although normally we say that less is more, in the case of accessories we should analyze this statement. When it comes to accessories this simply does not apply because, almost in every occasion, the most fashionable look you can achieve is the one that successfully incorporates the most varied necklaces and bracelets. Also pay attention to the color combination between your purse, shoes and sunglasses. Remember: it is no longer fashionable to wear the same color on shoes and purse. This will make you look vapid. Designers have realized how important it is for individual customers to be able to personalize, modify and spice up an outfit; that is why they have started to prioritize their lines of accesso-

ries over their clothes collections. Buying accessories is also an investment: it is the perfect way to expand your wardrobe. If you own a variety of accessories, you can transform an outfit as many times as you wish, making it seem as if you wore new clothes every day. The one thing we must consider is the importance of mixing them right. On the one hand, you do not want to look like a window display where all the elements do not quite match. On the other, you must avoid giving the impression that you have thrown on your entire closet. Last but not least: go further. Do not stop at shoes, purses or jewelry; try to refresh your outfits with scarves, hats, belts or accessories for your hair. We promise that with these final touches your style will be truly enviable.

Aviator sunglasses

 HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHERE THOSE COOL BIG LENSES AND SIGNATURE FRAME ORIGINATED FROM? Maybe you are a little curious as to how aviation shades have gotten so big in recent years? In this article I will discuss how “pilot glasses” began, as well as how they got where they are today. After reading this you may just decide on getting a pair for yourself! For aviation, both military and civil, the 1920’s was a decade of remarkable advances. Air traffic grew as a result. With the development of new aeroplanes that could fly higher and higher came altitude-related problems. Pilots were suffering from headaches and nausea because of glare and the great distances that they had to traverse. In 1929, General MacCready asked Ray-Ban for a new type

of air force eyewear that would protect pilots from glare at high altitudes while at the same time ensuring a clear field of vision. The company took up the challenge and succeeded in developing a new pair of glasses with lenses that could block out a high proportion of visible light. This marked the birth of the first, green-lens anti glare eyewear. The first model to go on sale to the public—in 1936—featured a plastic frame with the classic Aviator shape. But the name anti glare was too generic and the new name was chosen for the new product to emphasise that the eyewear could block out glare and protect the user’s eyes from the sun’s rays. The Large Metal model mmediately leapt to fame. Now there is a complete family of models: classical, technological, precious, creative, gold and on the road!

CLASSIC AVIATOR They are characterized by dark, often reflective lenses having an surface two or three times the area of the eye socket, and metal frames with bayonet earpieces or flexible cable temples that hook behind the ears. The original design featured G-20 tempered glass lenses, i.e., neutral gray, transmitting 20% of incoming light. The design attempts to cover the entire range of the eye and prevent as much light as possible from entering the eye socket from any angle. This frame became an icon of style and design, and the model that signalled the birth of a timeless legend. This style has been popular since the 1960’s, but became even more so in the 1980’s following pop culture references concerning Michael Jackson, and later use by celebrities in films like Top Gun, where Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise

sported them. Ray-Ban aviators were also prominently featured in films Cobra starring Sylvester Stallone and To Live and Die in L.A.— where two main characters are seen wearing them through the film. Even different lenses are sometimes used, but glass is still the most popular. Perhaps the biggest change has been all the different colors coming out. There are some high fashion names that carry a selection of aviator sunglasses, and this includes Armani, Burberry, Chanel, Tom Ford, Christian Dior, Chloe, DG, DKNY, Fendi, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Ray-Ban, Versace, Valentino and Ralph Lauren. All of the above combined have contributed to the huge success of aviator sunglasses. We can only expect them to get even more popular in the near future.

The hand-wound Royal Oak Offshore Tourbillon Chronograph by Audemars Piguet, features a 18K pink gold case, orged carbon bezel, ceramic crown and pushpieces. It undoubtedly belongs to the category of exceptional watches.

The Historiques American 1921, by Vacheron Constantin pays tribute to the bold style of the 1920’s. The 40mmin-diameter case is crafted in 18K pink gold. The peculiarity of the timepiece is the diagonal reading of the time, and the crown that kept its position at 1 o’clock.

Peter Speake-Marin and Christophe Claret joined forces in Maîtres du Temps to create Chapter One, the first timepiece that features a tourbillon with mono-pusher column wheel chronograph, retrograde date, retrograde GMT, and moon phase.

The watch case of Richard Mille’s RM 017 Tourbillon Extra Flat is 38mm wide and almost 50mm tall. Done in 18K rose gold with titanium, the case is really quite comfortable and comes with a rubber strap. This edition is limited to only 50 pieces.

Woman of style EXPRESSIONS

Frida Giannini

Gucci’s queen of design As creative director of one of the most powerful fashion houses, Frida Giannini has shown both brains and talent. BY PAULINA DELGADO HER ROMAN HERITAGE AND HER LIFE AS AN ONLY CHILD MAKE FRIDA GIANNINI A TIRELESS FIGHTER. THEREFORE, HER RISE IN THE FASHION WORLD COMES AS NO SURPRISE. While in her childhood she pretended to draw clothes in her father’s studio, now, as a grown woman, she is Gucci’s creative director and a self-admitted control freak who dominates every little detail of the brand. After studying fashion design at Rome’s Fashion Academy, Giannini worked in a small workshop of ready-to-wear clothes. Then she was able to get a job at Fendi, where she collaborated in the development of the Baguette. Her work on bags and accessories captured Tom Ford’s attention; he did not hesitate to make her a part of the Gucci team.

FRIDA’S STYLE AND HARD WORK PAID OFF. THIS PRINCESS OF ITALIAN DESIGN, WORTHY HEIR OF FORD’S REIGN, DESIGNED HER WAY TO THE TOP. In 2002, she arrived as the design director for Gucci handbags, but her rule of good taste and classic accents would begin two years later, with Ford’s departure, when she was promoted to creative designer of all accessories.

SHE DOES NOT DESCRIBE HERSELF AS AN ARTIST OR AS A PERFORMER; FRIDA GIANNINI KNOWS HER JOB IS TO MAKE BEAUTIFUL THINGS THAT HAVE TO BE SOLD, AND SHE REALLY KNOWS HOW TO DO IT. In 2006 she became creative director of the whole label. This devoted designer managed to restore the brand from the wobbles of Ford’s departure, and has done so by far: Gucci’s sales have increased by 12.5% thanks to Giannini’s visionary style. She thinks fashion is something that involves luxury, hazards, adventure and joy. One of her greatest successes has been her return to the label’s classical heritage, with a prospect that experiments with design strategies that both defy and reference signature Gucci elements.

GIANNINI HAS ASSUMED AN EXPANDED CREATIVE AUTHORITY BEYOND JUST DESIGN. She personally developed the architectural and interior design environments for Gucci’s new store concept that has rolled out in major cities around the world. Additionally, she is responsible for the creative direction of all advertising campaigns; therefore, she has worked with renowned directors such as David Lynch and Chris

Cunningham. Frida has also been helpful in bringing major celebrities to the brand, selecting James Franco for fragrance advertising, and Drew Barrymore and Claire Danes for the jewelry campaigns.

FRIDA GIANNINI’S WORK FOR AFRICAN CHILDREN AND HUMANITARIAN CAUSES.

“SEXINESS IS IN GUCCI’S DNA BUT MAYBE I INTERPRET IT DIFFERENTLY, BEING A WOMAN AND DRESSING WOMEN OF MY GENERATION.”

Her broadening profile has allowed for increased social responsibility as well. She is deeply dedicated to Gucci’s continued partnership with UNICEF, developing products and working closely with celebrities such as Madonna and Rihanna on initiatives for Raising Malawi and Schools for Africa, such as the release of the Tatoo Heart Collection, the children’s book Snowman in Africa and the Gucci for UNICEF Sukey bag in grey La Pelle Guccissima leather. She was also named on the Board of Directors of PPR’s Foundation for Women’s Dignity and Rights, an organization which fights violence against women and promotes their empowerment.

Divine Dining

GORDON RAMSAY AT CLARIDGE’S, LONDON

OVER THE YEARS, Claridge’s has perfected the art of hospitality and has found the perfect partner in Gordon Ramsay, one of only three chefs in the UK to hold three Michelin stars—he’s actually been awarded a total of 12 of them spread among his various restaurants. He’s a thoughtful, artistic chef with an eye to the whole dining experience, so service, table dressing and ambiance at his restaurants are given great weight. The lavish interior by Thierry Despont is gorgeous, an Art Deco outrage of caramels and golds. Great, glowing sail-like chandeliers float above the tables, bringing down the high ceiling a good 20ft. The carpet has grand curves of color that are reflected by the honey shades of the walls. It’s a pleasantly quiet dining room with all the soft furnishings and moulded walls, so you can have a

conversation with your dining partner without having to listen to everything the people at the next table are saying. Ramsay and Head Chef Steve Allen create elegantly-presented modern European dishes using only the finest British produce available. The À la carte and the six-course Menu Prestige are ideal for special occasions, while the set lunch menu has made this Michelinstarred experience an affordable indulgence. Now, if you can stand the heat, you can also watch Ramsay himself at work at the Chef’s table in the kitchen. The myriad of waiters— the staff-diner ratio is one to one—keeps the show gliding smoothly along from amusebouche to petit fours. Dishes like the starter of pressed foie gras marinated in Beaumes de Venise with pickled mushrooms, leek salad, and toasted

brioche, or the main course of Oxfordshire lamb with confit shoulder, spiced eggplant, green and white asparagus, and tarragon jus, are guaranteed to delight the palate, and the wine list is a real treat for connoisseurs. From chefs like Ramsay we do not look merely for good or very good. That is simply not enough. We crave memories. You can rest assured your expectations will be met; from the moment you are offered menus and bottles of water, glasses of champagne and a great basket of perfect breads, to the instant when you first taste the perfect dishes and glorious desserts, your cup will run over. Claridge’s is usually booked out months in advance—make sure you plan well ahead. Brook Street, Mayfair, London W1K 4HR Tel: 020 7499 0099 gordonramsay.com/claridges

Art Basel Miami Beach combines an international selection of top galleries with an exciting program of special exhibitions, parties and crossover events featuring music, film, architecture and design. Over 250 international galleries participated in the event, exhibiting the original work of approximately two thousand artists. In this, its ninth edition, more than half of the exhibitors come from outside the United States, with a strong European participation, twenty galleries from Latin America, eight galleries from Asia and two from Africa. Galleries selected from 29 countries showcased numerous sculptures, installations, editions, and videos, but paintings and drawings ranked first in terms of the offer this year. The work of Latin

Although art dealers avoided disclosing information on transactions involving big names and soaring prices, they admitted that, thanks to the solid sales achieved this year, they left Miami Beach very satisfied after several years of economic crisis. Art curators also claim that we are currently going through one of the best times to buy the most exclusive and innovative works in the field of contemporary visual arts. The show was not only confined to the walls of City Hall in the city’s beautiful Art

Deco District, but also invaded other parts of the city, with programs such as Ocean Front, a cultural platform that occupied an entire block directly at the heart of Miami Beach’s waterfront. This year, the Oceanfront Nights program, curated by Creative Time, spotlighted the cultural scenes of Berlin, Detroit, Glasgow, and Mexico City. On the other hand, Art Basel Conversations offered audiences access to first-hand information on important aspects of the international art world, starting the program with the traditional Artist Talk Premiere featuring distinguished artists, art collectors, museum directors, curators, and others active in the cultural sphere. Every year this show brings a gust of fresh air to the city’s cultural life: in addition to the artistic offer exhibited at the Miami Beach Convention Center, many independent galleries and artists organize a variety of art-related activities.

Aston Martin DBS Volante

FEEL THE FREEDOM

Test Drive SPIRIT

M The first Volante (DB6) by Aston Martin appeared over forty years ago. Completing the DBS line-up, the new Volante affords customers the combination of the DBS’s already-established benchmark sports car characteristics with all the thrills of open-air motoring. BY ISRAEL CAMARGO VÁZQUEZ. PHOTOS: COURTESY OF ASTON MARTIN

THE DB6 WAS THE FIRST ASTON MARTIN to carry the name “Volante” for the convertible version—which means ‘flying’ in Italian. Clearly derived from the DB4 through the DB5, the last thirty-seven DB5 chassis were used to build the short-chassis Volantes. The original model was announced at the London Motor Show in October 1965, and the new DBS Volante was premiered at the Geneva Auto Salon on the 3rd March 2009, in companionship with other auto marvel from Gaydon, Warwickshire: the One 77, which we already had occasion to talk about in our first issue of August/September, 2010.

45 YEARS OF MOVEMENT Although more than four decades apart, both vehicles share distinctive features: for instance, when the DB6 appeared, the most noticeable styling change was the spoiler—then called a “Kamm tail”—integrated into the tail of the car, which improved high speed stability. This is also present in the new DBS Volante model, although now it is called “ducktail”. Other features undoubtedly inherited from the DB6 Volante are the split front and rear bumpers, and a redesigned oil cooler aperture in the front valance. Benefitting from materials derived from the motorsport and aerospace industries, the bonnet, front wings and boot lid are made from carbon fiber all helping to reduce weight. Preventing the weave protruding the paint finish, Aston Martin employs a patented ‘surface veil’ technology applying a 200-micron thick layer of epoxy glue to the carbon fiber, before the application or seven layers of paint producing a class A level of finish.

THE TRADITIONAL FABRIC ROOF Although the DBS was originally conceived as a twoseater sports GT, the potential for a Volante version was always in the minds of the design team. Aston

Test Drive SPIRIT

Martin’s 16th convertible in 95 years, the DBS Volante draws on the marque’s extensive experience in designing iconic ‘Volantes,’ resulting in Aston Martin’s quietest and most refined roof system to date. The DBS’s beautiful profile is preserved whether up or down. When the roof is closed, it provides a warm comfortable ambience and when open, it neatly disappears behind the new tonneau cover at the touch of a button. The newly choreographed hood has resulted in an opening time of only 14 seconds due to a new five-piston hydraulic pump. When raised, the fabric roof is insulated with a layer of Thinsulate material relieving cabin noise and protecting the inhabitants from the elements. Aston Martin engineers opted for a fabric hood to closely follow the silhouette of the DBS coupé and due to its lightweight properties, minimise overall weight gain. Broadening the DBS’s character, the DBS Volante will appeal to drivers who wish to combine the excitement of driving a finely-tuned sports car with the invigorating feeling of being open to the elements. The DB6 Volante is even lighter, weighting only 1,474 kg.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY Just like 45 years ago, safety is an important consideration in your vehicle purchase. The new model houses the Roll-Over-Protection-System (ROPS) which deploys two roll bars in the event of the car rolling over, the rear humps lead your eye to the new carbon fiber deck lid which has been re-styled for the DBS Volante. Every man desires to drive an Aston Martin. With this model you will exceed the los 190 mph.

The model also has side airbags and dualstage driver/passenger front airbags, in addition to a revised Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system specifically tuned to the Volante to help maintain maximum traction in challenging driving conditions. In default operation, the DSC is automatically on. Select and press the button for two seconds and DSC ‘Track’ mode is engaged, raising the threshold at which the system intervenes to allow the experienced driver to explore the car’s limits. Hold the button for four seconds and DSC is disengaged entirely. The Aston Martin DBS Volante’s Adaptive Damping System perfectly captures the car’s sporting character, ensuring that stiffer dampers are available for better handling and control when the car is being driven enthusiastically, without compromising ride comfort during ‘normal’ driving conditions. A designated ‘Track’ mode automatically sets all dampers to their firmest positions, making it ideal for circuit driving. Moreover, the car includes Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) and Traction control. On top of these technological advances, front and rear Ventilated Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) brakes (with six- and four-piston calipers) are featured as standard, as well as 10-spoke diamond-turned alloy wheels with graphite finish. The DBS Volante is fitted with Pirelli P-Zero tires that have been developed especially for the car (245/35 tires at the front and 295/30 rear).

NO RESTRAINTS The heart of the DBS Volante is powered by a hand-built alloy 6.0-litre V12 engine producing 510 bhp (380 kW / 517 PS), and 570 Nm (420 lb ft) of torque with a top speed of 191 mph (307 km/h) and 0-62 mph (0-100 kp/h) time of 4.3 seconds. The nature of the V12, and in particular the torque available at all engine speeds, serves to provide effortless driving in all situations. In standard specification, the DBS has a rear-mounted sixspeed manual gearbox, and the system has been substantially re-engineered to accommodate the power and performance characteristics of the DBS. An automatic six-speed ‘Touchtronic’ option is also available, with ‘Park’, ‘Reverse’, ‘Neutral’ and ‘Drive’ modes selected via facia mounted controls (torque converter is also available as an option). When in ‘Drive’ mode, pulling either of the leather-trimmed magnesium alloy paddles mounted on the steering column will activate Touchtronic mode, enabling the driver to control gear shifts via the paddles. Alternatively, the ‘Drive’ mode can be selected at any time by pressing the ‘D’ control on the centre console, engaging a fully automatic mode which will select the most appropriate gear for the speed and driving conditions automatically. The ‘Sport’ mode—activated by a button on the centre console—engages a more aggressive gear shift strategy as gear changes feel sharper and more forceful, engine speed matching on downshifts is more aggressive and in full automatic mode, upshifts occur at higher speeds. The Sport setting also incorporates a more responsive throttle map to match the high-performance characteristics of the DBS Volante. In turn, the first Volante featured a 282 bhp, 3,995 cc inline six-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts and triple SU carburettors, ZF five-speed manual gearbox, independent front suspension with upper and lower control arms, coil springs and anti-roll bar, live rear axle with Watt linkage, radius rods and coil springs, and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. The car was capable of 0-100-0 mph in 6.1 seconds, with a top speed of 240 km/h.

LEATHER AND CARBON FIBER The interior of the DBS represents the epitome of Aston Martin’s commitment to using materials honestly, without disguise or embellishment. Lightweight materials are used throughout to save weight; door pulls are made from carbon-fiber, for example, and the carpet has been woven with lighter fibers to save valuable kilograms. The Volante features 2+2 seating as standard. The beautifully leather trimmed rear seats are

ideal for younger persons or extra luggage making the DBS Volante a practical everyday sports car. Delivered as standard with Bang & Olufsen’s BeoSound DBS audio system and seamlessly integrated into the DBS Volante’s bespoke interior, the system provides the driver and passengers with an unrivalled audio experience. Consisting of 13 individual speakers and Bang & Olufsen’s unique Digital Signal Processing system, the system transforms the DBS Volante into an acoustically sophisticated venue, capable of conveying subtle and striking musical dynamics from every source. The BeoSound DBS has been specifically revised for the DBS Volante and senses when the roof is up or retracted and adjusts the sound stage to compensate for wind noise and change in acoustics. The Bang & Olufsen BeoSound DBS system has been developed exclusively for Aston Martin. When the system is turned on, the twin acoustic lens speakers emerge silently and swiftly, adding a touch of theatre and technological panache that is the perfect complement to the DBS Volante.

ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF HOLIDAYS ON THE BEACH IS swimming up to the pool bar and ordering a piña colada, without feeling like you are making a fool of yourself due to the so-called tackiness and without fearing someone will raises an eyebrow, as if to say “How ghetto!” For those of you who have refrained from ordering one (hmmm!) in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood bars, guess what? Cocktails are totally back and they are are the coolest drinks of the moment. Why don’t you give them a try and start ordering mai tais, coco fizzes and daiquiris at the slightest provocation? For that reason we have taken on the task of coaxing our top bartenders and mixologists into revealing their secret recipes for their favorite drinks. As you finish up your spring cleaning or income taxes, and plan your gardens and summer vacation, take some time to sit down and celebrate the sunshine the best way we know: with a

delectable drink in hand while mingling with sexy patrons at a posh rooftop bash. It is time to get your friends together and embrace the warm weather with bursts of color in your glass. How about starting with a Fly Away Martini? One of its main ingredients is a coca leaf liqueur mixed with vodka. As the night goes on, a Bullet is the drink to go for, a mix of vodka, Jägermeister, Red Bull and dark beer—the perfect mix to boost your mood! Now, if you are very hot and what to impress your friends, order a Torito DC, a mix of vodka, gin, ice, lemon juice and dark beer. I guarantee the results will not disappoint you. As you can see, cocktails are not just drinks made out of one or more spirits mixed with syrups, fruit juices, herbs, creams and egg yolks and whites. Nowadays, cocktails have incorporated a wide variety of ingredients—some of them weird or even potentially

dangerous, such as calcium chloride, liquid nitrogen, alginic acid and nitrous oxide—in order to create astounding visual effects and textures such as foams, gels, clouds or beads, turning cocktails into true works of art. To the traditional bartending tools and utensils— the typical shakers, strainers, jiggers, spoons, muddlers, pourers, blenders, juicers, siphons, graters, zesters, boards and openers—we can now add blowtorches and syringes that ensure the unique presentation that characterizes these sophisticated mixes. Jamie Boudreau who, according to Playboy magazine, was considered the best bartender in Seattle in 2007 and one of the greatest in the United States, offers on his Facebook profile and internet videos many practical tips for preparing the best cocktails. If you want to start experimenting at home and getting the right look for your cocktails—presentation is essential in this business— besides your spectacular glassware, Japanese umbrellas, olives of all sizes, sliced fruit, herbs and maraschino cherries at hand, you will need start preparing layered drinks. They look great and their only secret is to be extremely careful when handling the ingredients. Layering a drink is easiest if you measure each successive liquor into a measuring glass, and then use the measuring glass to pour the liquor along your bar spoon and into the serving glass. I have nothing else to add, except ‘Cheers and bring us another round!’

Divine Dining NICK-SAN PALMILLA, CABO

THE ANCIENT TRADITION OF JAPANESE CUISINE has been reinvented at Nick-San. Every dish on the menu is a creative mixture of subtle flavors that combine the traditional Mexican cooking with oriental ingredients and the finest techniques. Some years ago Masayuki Nikura and Ángel Carbajal opened the first Nick-San venue at Los Cabos. They have not stopped for a day since then, and they have managed to transform it into an essential reference of the finest Cabo cuisine. Almost five years ago, Nick-San opened a new venue at Las Tiendas, in Palmilla, a fresh alternative for gourmets who want to visit the high-style restaurants in Baja. Delicious surprises are created at Carbajal’s kitchen. Every dish of the menu is a delightful fusion of diverse cooking traditions and delicious ingredients. His imaginative mind, combined with Nikura’s experience, has created an amazing selection of original dishes: in each of them you will find an exciting encounter of Japanese ingredients used the Mexican way. Moreover, you can rest assured of the freshness of the ingredients, because the owner’s

fishing fleet provides a daily supply of sea bass, dorado, tuna, and wahoo to each one of their venues. At Nick-San you must try the sashimi cilantro, a perfect dish topped with a unique cilantro sauce and a ribbon of spicy chile oil— we are sure you will be tempted to lick every single drop of this tasty dressing that, although it can be purchased for home use, will remain a well-kept secret. You must also give a try to the sashimi serranito, a fresh slice of fish with a serrano chile pepper sauce. If you simply have to indulge that craving for fresh lobster, try the lobster sambal, an exquisite dish marinated in sake and bathed in a sauce of sweet and sour chiles, green onion and sesame oil. The truly connoisseur will be amazed by the delicious options of these restaurants. Each bite stands up for Nick-San’s motto: Exceeding your expectations beyond your wildest dreams. 116 Las Tiendas de Palmilla, Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico Phone: 52 624 1446 264 nicksan.com

For Her

A SEXY SUV THAT FEELS LKE A SPORTS CAR

THE CAYENNE 2011 follows the Porsche philosophy of design evolution. The latest release of this model combines the classic outgoing Cayenne’s appearance with more organic bodylines, resulting in a powerful alternative to a minivan. The redesigned interiors resemble the Panamera sport style, with new improvements that includes a repositioned shift-knob, sportier gauges and a new steering wheel. The Cayenne is the SUV that everybody wants but only a few can drive. In addition to the 300

horsepower 3.6-liter V6–capable of a zero-to-60 sprint of 7.1 seconds with the manual transmission, or 7.4 seconds with the Tiptronic S automatic—Porsche’s Cayenne is the epitome of safety and luxury. When you sit behind its wheel, you will feel like a true road queen: every detail has been designed thinking of you. The Lane Change Assist (LCA) will help you to monitor the area behind the car, alerting you of vehicles in the blind spot or approaching quickly from behind via a vi-

sual signal from the exterior mirrors, while the ParkAssits+ Rearview camera system will help you to park using an acoustic signal. Other interior features include Bluetooth and a Burmester high-end surround sound system. Thanks to the extra 1.6 inches in the wheelbase, interior dimensions have also grown. This year you can choose between the S model, the S Hybrid eco-friendly model or the Turbo. Each one has its own personality. Which one is the right for you? porsche.com

THE FERRARI 458 ITALIA, an 8-cylinder two-seater berlinetta with a mid-rear mounted engine, represents a genuine break from the past in terms of Maranello’s previous high-performance sports cars. Designed to fulfill the expectations and ambitions of the most passionate clients, the 458 Italia continues the Ferrari tradition of putting the thrill into driving as a result of track-derived technological innovations. The engine is a dry-sump 90 degree V8 with a displacement of 4,499 cc and is mid-rear mounted. It is an entirely new design engineered to reach a maximum of 9,000 rpm—a first on a road car—with a high 12.5:1 compression ratio and maximum power output of 570 CV. One of the important novelties on the 458 Italia is the introduction of the 7-speed F1 dual-clutch gearbox which guarantees faster yet smoother changes. Every Ferrari is the result of an uncompromising design approach that integrates styling and aerodynamic requirements. Maranello’s racing experience can be felt not only in terms of pure technological transfer but also on a more emotional level, because of the strong emphasis on creating an almost symbiotic relationship between driver and car. ferrari.com

WHILE OTHER SPANISH WINES have achieved an international recognition, Pingus is one of the very few that has joined the ranks of the world’s most coveted wines. Like Coche-Dury’s Corton-Charlemagne, Guigal’s LaLa wines, or Giacomo Conterno’s Monfortino, Pingus is known and revered wherever great wine is discussed. Pingus is produced by the visionary Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck. Peter arrived in Spain in 1993 to manage a new project, Hacienda Monasterio. While planting and developing Monasterio, he began to dream about the old vines he saw dotted around the Ribera del Duero landscape. By the 1995 vintage, Peter had found a group of old vines that spurred him to embark on his own project. He called it “Pin-

gus,” after his childhood nickname. When in 1996 he showed up in Bordeaux at the en primeur tastings, Pingus immediately gave a lot to talk about. Robert Parker announced the wine on the back cover of his Wine Advocate, bestowing an unheard of 96-100-point score. The world took notice, and Pingus was on its way. Pingus has a quality that is often lacking in today’s “modern” wines—a sense of utter individuality. For there is no other wine in the world today that shares Pingus’ unique signature and, ultimately, that singularity is one of the fundamental requirements for great wine. Pingus is fermented in large wooden vats and, once in cask, is mostly left alone. It is largely raised in new barriques, though the flavors of the

oak vanish into the enormous concentration. Pingus is indeed a wine that is magical in the way that it balances otherworldly richness with a rare sense of elegance. Over the past decade, Peter has continually refined his original vision. Since 2001, he has employed biodynamic viticulture to capture a healthier balance in his vineyards. In the winery, he has made subtle changes aimed at taming the region’s natural power, and giving more delineation and depth to the Pingus voice. rarewineco.com

This gorgeous mega yacht has also been ranked in the international list of top 100 yachts in the world. Her exclusivity and prestige are the culmination of a cutting-edge design mixed with high-end technology. The sophisticated slender shape of the hull and the racy external lines, accentuated by the pronounced stern characterize and distinguish the Azteca from other mega yachts of her size—breaking ground about the myth that big boats can’t have a “sporty” soul. The renowned Italian luxury yacht designers Nuvolari & Lenard collaborated

in the creation of Azteca—a customized project, as CRN’s philosophy demands. The shipyard stood up to the challenge and managed to reflect the passion and dedication of the luxury brand in every single detail of this wonderful mega yacht. Without a doubt, the layout pays tribute to the refinement and taste of her future guests. The luxurious ship has a lavish owner’s suite with balcony over the ocean and can accommodate 12 additional guests. GERMAN HI-TECH FOR TREKKING

THE GERMAN AUTOMOBILE,motorcycle and engine manufacturing company has launched an exclusive bike design, ideal for those who enjoy the freedom of trekking. BMW engineers have developed a unique aluminium frame that features a distinctive, unexpected design. The label does not employ mass produced third-party frames, but manufactures their own. The smoth-welded seams are perfectly joined, bestowing a contemporary appearance to this bike. Emphasising the BMW Cruise Bike’s laid-

back character, the cables for the brakes and gear system are hardly visible—they even run partially inside the frame, which was manufactured through hydroforming (a state-of-the-art process that uses high-pressure water to allow the walls of the tube to expand inside a mold and free the aluminum of any shape restrictions). This seamless and visually striking frame is available on three colors, so you can pick the one that fits better your personality. Whether you go with the orange and white, the silver and white or the one in blue and black, your ride will always be trendy and safe. quired, but innate, although in some cases they can be studied and learned. They should look natural, but at the same time, they should define and enhance the style of any person.

MY FAVORITE DAY OUTFIT for this past winter season was the new Harris Tweed jacket: it reflects the striving for perfection, while showing the detailed and precise English tailoring at its best. When paired with jeans and a casual shirt it becomes stylish and casual for the weekend. For the night, I prefer a velvet jacket with a crisp white shirt and a pair of dark jeans.

a good dress shirt must be a basic in the closet of any man with style. It totally enhances the whole outfit...

OF COURSE A MAN CAN WEAR JEWELRY, but he should do it moderately and avoid using gemstones. A good watch, maybe a ring, that’s all. I tend to buy bespoke suits from Ralph Lauren. However, I do not have any problems with purchasing ready-towear clothes.

I HAVE TWO FAVORITE WATCHES: one is an ultra-thin Tiffany & Co. watch, ideal for formal occasions; the other is a Tag Heure for the rest of the week. I like being practical.

SOME OF MY STYLE-MUSTS ARE: custom-made dress shirts that look perfect on you (Thomas Pink are obviously the best!), at least one bespoke suit and a good pair of dress shoes (elegant, comfortable and in perfect conditions).

HONESTY, DIGNITY AND INTEGRITY

are the values I admire the most in a human being. My object of desire would be a painting by Vermeer and the motto of my life: “Try to have as many experiences in life as possible.”

Tavern in New York and Avenue in Paris: they have the best food in a relaxed and not pretentious atmosphere. As for hotels, I love the Claridge’s hotel in London for its Art Deco style, the Ritz in Paris for its excellent location and beautiful garden. The Park Hyatt in Tokyo, is also very dear to my heart. The suites are really impressing, food and service are excellent and there are gorgeous views of Mount Fujiyama from the rooms.

LONG WEEKENDS IN THE ENGLISH COUN TRYSIDE ARE MY PASSION, especially with friends, and even better if the sun is shining but the weather is cool. Long walks make me very happy, as well as good food and having at my disposal plenty of newspapers and good books to read.

THE LAST TRIPS I remember fondly were to Hong Kong and China, India and Mexico City. I was fortunate to visit these colorful cities. They are very beautiful and the people are very special. Food was always an extraordinary experience.

MACKEN

orn on October 20, 1949 in Granard, Longford County, Ireland. Even though he was the youngest of four, his father expected him to carry on the family business of butchering and farming. However, Eddie had a different dream for himself. As a child, just like today, he had three wishes for himself; to ride, ride and ride. As he sat astride his first pony as a boy, little did Eddie know the enormous impact his passion and natural talent would have on the sport of show jumping. A self-made man who left home with 2 pounds in his pocket and a reluctant hug from his father, Eddie risked his relationship with his family to forge an illustrious career that has left the world reeling. In 1933, Wilhelm Musüler, a renowned German author, must have been speaking about Eddie Macken when he wrote, “… Although the art of riding can encompass a lifetime or two, one day through your barn doors will walk a young student

who makes everything look so easy…” This is exactly how in 1969, one of Europe’s top trainers, Iris Kellett, experienced Eddie when he went to work for her at the age of 20. In Iris’s own words: “He came to me as a rough country boy but when he sat on a horse it was magic: he had an excellent build, was supple, had the temperament and natural sensitivity. Above everything else he had a feel for the horse.” Macken went to Kellett to learn how to develop, train and produce horses. A six-month stint which ended up being six years, yielding incredible results for the stables and for Ireland. Starting in 1970, with three consecutive Nations Cup wins, Eddie began to lay down one of the most impressive careers in show jumping history. At Iris Kellett’s Eddie took his international exposure very seriously. Competing in the same arenas as David Broome and Harvey Smith, he was a keen observer of his competitors’ training techniques and riding styles. Commentator and

head of RTE Radio Sport Ian Corr referred to Macken as: “... one of the few Irish internationals of his time who had such a cool and detached lack of awe for the opposition he faced…” Simultaneously, his obvious talent too was being observed by his peers. Alvin and Paul Schockemöhle both made him offers to ride out of their stables and, although an unpopular decision at the time, Macken wisely chose to take the offer from Paul in the hopes of fulfilling his ambition to compete internationally and to gain access to a larger pool of talented horses outside Ireland. Eddie’s dreams slowly began to materialize. Riding out of Schockemöhle’s yard his weekly international exposure, combined with his passion and talent, yielded the results he was hoping for. He rode talented horses like “Boy”, “Miss FAN”, “Schalkaar”, “Easter Parade”, “La Bamba”, “Welfenkrone”, “Royal Lion”, “Kerry Gold”, and “Boomerang” and the results he obtained are now part of show jumping history. Eddie’s peers at the time, Franke Sloothaak, Elmar Schweckhorst, Otto Becker, Evelyn Blaton, Manfred Kotter, Johan Heins, Gerd Wiltfang and Paul & Alvin Schockemöhle were all in awe of his style. Elmar Pollmann-Schweckhorst credited Eddie with a new style of show jumping and he referred to his skills as “sensitive, harmonious, rhythmical, and inconspicuously controlling the point of takeoff, thus making the horses jump in a very precise manner.” Eddie, now 62, has been competing internationally at the highest level for over 40 years. Eddie has won events at almost every major venue and with over 100 consecutive Nations Cup appearances. He is truly what legends are made of. In his

40 year career, Eddie has won events at Wiesbaden, Cologne, Dublin, Wembley, St Gallen, Aachen, Hickstead, Brussels, La Baule, Rome, Olympia, New York, Washington, Geneva, Gothenburg, Nice, Milan, Zurich, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Dortmund and Hamburg. With over sixty CSI***** wins and hundreds of Grand Prix’s wins to his credit, he has also been on the winning Agha Khan team numerous times. Eddie represented Ireland at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and the 1996 games at Atlanta. He also represented Ireland at the World Equestrian Games in 1994 at The Hague, 1990 at Stockholm, 1982 at Dublin, 1974 at Aachen where he was a silver medalist by 1/10th of a second and 1974 at Hickstead where he was also a silver medalist by a mere 1/8th of a second. He was at the European Championships for Ireland at Wien in 1977, Hickstead in 1979, Rotterdam in 1979, Munich in 1981, Hickstead in 1983, San Gallo in 1995, and Mannheim in 1997. He was at World Cups held in Goteburg in 1979, 1984, 1986 and 1995, Del Mar in 1992, ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 1994, and Geneva in 1996. He led the world computer rankings for three years between 1977 and 1979, won the Hickstead Derby four times, the Hamburg Derby three times and still holds the record at Spruce Meadows, where in 1979 he won all four of the big money classes. He was the recipient of Irish Supreme Sports Star in 1978 in addition to countless Irish Showjumper of Year awards and other honors. British journalist Judith Dreaper in her book, The Stars of Show Jumping, sums up Eddie’s career: “Eddie Macken, the supreme stylist, will go down in sporting history not as one of the greatest riders to come out of Ireland but as one of the greatest riders of all time in the world.”

The handful of riders who have attained a level of greatness like Eddie, have the ability to feel, think and react like a horse. So they are typically caring, sensitive, powerful, loyal human beings who work extremely hard. I have always called Eddie a magician, not because he does tricks, but because when he rides, we are unable to see how he achieves so much grace, style, form and accuracy. While he is riding he displays a sense of calm, ease, style and confidence that always comforts horses. They trust him enough to display a side of themselves that is normally not seen with other riders. Eddie is uncanny in his recognition of what horses need and what each horse is capable of; he will never push a horse beyond what they can do and he will never put them in situations where he feels that they cannot perform. One of the noblest qualities of Eddie Macken is that after over 40 years of doing this, he still loves and respects horses with a passion. For him this sport is not a business. For him it is a way of life: it is his life, his passion. Recently, after turning down a lucrative coaching position with one of show jumping’s leading countries, Eddie instead has chosen decided to divert his energy towards his client business on the West Coast of the United States. The quality of life that his client business provides him over the familiar hectic routine of being on the road in Europe as a competitor, allows him to slow down, placing family and friends over everything else. Little does Eddie realize that he is about to make an even larger contribution to the sport than his prominent career: he is about to inspire and mentor the next generation of horsemen and legends. Eddie is now based out of New Kells Farm in Langley, British Columbia with a string of four horses; two of them are in the big sport. This year Eddie is planning to return to the sport after recently recovering from a serious injury. His top two horses are in partnership with Samia and Daryl Staehle who are dear friends and co-conspirators in his quest to continue to humiliate the next generation of international competitors in the jump off. In addition to his own blue ribbons, Eddie is proudest when his clients are also in the ribbons. Running the day to day operations of a barn at this stage in his life is arduous. Therefore,

the role he prefers with his clients is that of an advisor, mentor and coach instead of trainer. Periodically, professional trainers consult with Eddie about their clients via clinics or shows to enhance their client’s success. In addition to the two to three clients with roughly 12 horses that ride with him throughout the year, Eddie is always available to professional riders who continue to seek out his counsel. At the beginning of each year, Eddie and his clients jointly devise an annual tour which consists of select venues on the West Coast, in Canada and in Europe. Eddie sees his clients every two weeks, whether it is at a competition or–if there is none–at home to ensure that all skills remain sharp and honed. This is one coach who can easily tell if his clients have done their homework. Even though he does not assume day to day responsibility of the horses, he has invaluable input as to conditioning, diet, veterinary and other horse management practices. With Eddie we are learning horsemanship and the life that goes along with it. Life with horses has its unusual twists and turns, the ups, the downs, the care of the horses... But most importantly, Eddie has taught us “how to give your horse the best opportunity to win.” A simple statement that we may never master like he has. However, we are never in doubt of the 40 years of success as a competitor, gentleman and horseman that Eddie is trying to condense and communicate to his clients. Eddie’s passion to teach is fueled by qualities, which he recognizes in his clients, that drove him as a young man: desire, ambition, hard work and talent. Even though 20 years ago, training was not in his repertoire, over the last few years training equally passionate and hard working amateurs and professionals like Stephanie Sapperstein, Phoebe Lang, Sanjay Bagai, Andrea Beatie, Jennifer Crooks, Sayre Happy, Keely Stranahan, Guillermo Obligado, Tara Couch and Sara Neiman has completely revived his interest in trying to communicate his methods and what he does so naturally. Says Stephie Sapperstein of Eddie: “Eddie Macken is first and foremost a legend; he is an unbelievable rider and horseman. He brought me from struggling around the children’s jumpers to jumping around my first grand-prix, and he helped me compile

the team of horses I have today. He taught me about the real work that goes into horseback riding, considering I use to think that just showing up at a horse show should lead to winning. He would tell me to make it around the course no matter how pretty it looked, or more often, did not look. I would come out of the ring and learn what I needed to work on for next time, or on the rare occasion he would tell me that my round was “pure magic,” words that still give me the chills. More important than anything he taught me, is that he really cares. Each day I wanted to work and try harder, not because of what anyone would think of me, but because I knew that while Eddie was standing there watching he genuinely cared for my development and for me. By believing in me, he made me believe in myself. Eddie remains as a significant inspiration for me, and he will always be a big part of my life.” Says Phoebe Lang about Eddie: “Eddie is a proud but humble man, in spite of his legendary record he never assumes the pose of a ‘know-it-all.’ A constant learner and an astute observer, Eddie treats horses and students with uncanny sensitivity and care. As a teacher, Eddie is calm, respectful and firm with us as well as with the horses. He always adopts the style of an advisor and a coach, not as of an authoritarian, and he is constantly encouraging us to think and feel for ourselves. One of his favorite lines is, ‘feel what is going on under you.’ Eddie is a master at providing his students with information and education in layers. Making sure he does not ask too much from his clients at the wrong time, but ensuring that he challenges them enough to get to the next layer. He is patient and manages the learning of his students with slow, steady and intentional instruction, keeping his students on a path of building confidence, having fun and growing as horsemen.” Money has never meant much to Eddie, his choice in horses is economical and appropriate for the level of his students

and he spends his clients’ money frugally and conservatively. His eldest son Stevie Macken runs a wildly successful horse dealing business out of Maastricht, and much to Stevie’s chagrin, on buying trips Eddie often pushes Stevie to seek out better and more affordable. This sport is changing very rapidly and the history and story behind the evolution of the sport is receding quickly in our rear view mirror. The sport has a very deep and rich culture here in the United States, but more so in Europe and this history, this knowledge and perspective is very important to keep alive and in perspective as the sport evolves. There have been many legendary horses and riders before our time who have competed in this sport for decades and left a legacy for all of us amateurs and professionals. So for us, as Eddie’s clients, we feel fortunate to learn the real story, the real history, and the real depth of the sport from him. My wife and I are students of the sport and to have Eddie in our life and to have learned the sport from him is one of our life’s greatest privileges. Eddie is a Gentleman before he is a horseman, a horseman before he is a rider and a rider before he is a competitor. Constantly trying to figure out what his horse needs to give him the best performance, Eddie is always listening to his horses to understand them better and to decipher their stoic messages. Eddie is a fierce competitor and a natural stylist. Even Eddie’s father Jimmy recalled that: “... the stools in my butcher shop, the chairs at home, walls, whatever, became horses and even then he rode them with style.” Eddie walks softly amongst us trying to blend in with his tantalizing smile, unassuming posture, legendary twinkling blue eyes that light up with his great sense of humor and kind words; we must not forget that we have a living legend in our midst, and if you ever are in the jump off with him, prepare for the worst!

he Jumping action kicked-off from Thursday 16th December through to Monday 20th December with The Alltech Christmas Puissance held on Friday evening, the Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping presented and the Olympia Grand Prix on Monday evening. The popular Six Bar was also back in the arena on Monday afternoon. Olympia is well known for its outstanding display acts and this year was no different. Visitors got the chance to see two of Olympia’s most popular acts—The Household Cavalry’s Musical Ride and The Ukrainian Cossacks. Both acts showed the tremendous skill and horsemanship of those involved.

ROLEX FEI WORLD CUP JUMPING Sixteen riders representing eight nations went through to the jump-off in a remarkably hot competition. John Whitaker, gallant runner-up in 2008 on the giant “Casino,” showed all his old magic to steer the big horse around a tightly-bunched loop of fences clear in 36.27sec. But minutes later he was relegated, to eventual fourth, when his time was bettered, by just 100th of a second, by the current Rolex rankings leader Kevin Staut on “Le Prestige St Lois de Hus.” Then, the in-form Irishman Billy Twomey, who was the bookie’s favourite at 5-1, went deceptively fast on the talented chestnut “Tinka’s Serenade,” in 35.74. Next to go, Michael was Britain’s last chance to win their home qualifier, and he didn’t disappoint the thrilled crowd, beating Billy by 2/100ths of a second. A packed house erupted into cheering when Michael Whitaker produced a brilliantly judged turn of speed on Beatrice Mertens’ “GIG Amai” to become the first Briton for five

years to win the 100,000 euro Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping, the showpiece class on H & M day at Olympia, the London International Horse Show. The 50 year old Yorkshire-born rider was almost speechless with delight. His 10 year old gelding went home to an explosion of applause from the ecstatic home crowd. Michael Whitaker was delighted with his horse. “Amai is definitely as good a horse as I’ve ever had, if not better. He didn’t do anything when he was nine and not a lot when he was an eight-year-old so he had a lot of catching up to do. You’ve got to be patient when producing horses, and this week I put all my eggs in one basket and it paid off! I planned for this one and it came off—that doesn’t often happen—and this is a great place to win!” he said, quite overtaken with emotion. “I haven’t had the best of years, so for something that I had planned for so specifically to come off is brilliant and very satisfying.” Michael is now the highest placed British rider in the Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping rankings, in eighth place, and probably only needs one more decent placing to secure his place at the final at Leipzig in April. Riders decreed the track, built by Brazilian Guilherne Jorge, as highly technical, with a plethora of stride patterns, turns and uprights, rather than overly large. His 13-fence course had plenty of questions however and the last line which included a vertical followed by five strong or six shorter strides to the final triple combination was the undoing of many. The planks at the first element of the double at fence four also proved testing, and two of the most impressive early rounds came from the Netherlands’ Marc Houtzager and “HBC Tamino” who made it look very elementary indeed and Staut’s gelding who, however, was fortunate to avoid hitting the timing mechanism when lashing out during one of his trademark bucking and kicking routines after landing over the last. Asked if they would compete at the next leg of the 2010/2011 Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping series at Mechelen in Belgium both Whitaker and Twomey replied that they would not, as they would be spending the time with their children.

OLYMPIA GRAND PRIX England’s leading show jumper, Edwina Alexander, brought H & M day at Olympia to a victorious close with a convincing win in the 21,000 euro H & M Ivy Stakes. Riding the 12-yearold grey “Cevo Socrates”, she set an early target in the 12-horse jump off with clear in 32.44. Seven more riders followed, but none could match Edwina, although Scott Brash, Ben Maher and Albert Zoer, who all picked up four faults, were faster. Last to go, John Whitaker was looking dangerous on the grey “Dazzle,” but the partnership came unstuck before the third to last fence and crashed through it. Instead, the consistent Dutch Olympian Marc Houtzager on “Opium VS” finished second, ahead of flamboyant Italian rider Lucia Vizzini, with “Tina Fletcher” four and best Brit on the exciting prospect “Utopia lX”.

pproximately 160 horses and 70 riders from nineteen countries were present at the CSI of A Coruña: Australia, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Brazil, Britain, Finland, France, Greece, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, and the United States.

NH HOTELS TROPHY Out of the thirty-three pairs who entered this very tight competition, only six were able to qualify to the jump off after a clear round. Already at the jump off, Gerco Schrörder from Holland and his mount, six year-old “Eurocommerce London” completed a clear round in an spectacular 34.73 seconds. It seemed as if no one was going to be able to beat his chronometer until Kürten arrived. The rider and her mount “Castle Forbes Myrtille Paulois” competed in the last place and managed to complete the course without fault in an amazing 34.57 seconds, just a few fractions of a second below the Dutch Gergo Schrörder. “I am very excited of having won here again. I really love Casas Novas. Competing here is like being at home for me. Maybe that is why I do well at this competition, and perhaps that’s why I take so many risks,” said Kürten after the class.

TELEFONICA GRAND PRIX Telefonica Grand Prix proved to be a very tight two rounds without jump-off competition. From the thirty-three entries who participated, only ten made it to the second round. This part was especially challenging and, due to its difficulty, only half of the participants were able to finish the course with a clean ride. Everything indicated that Jessica Kürten would land the Grand Prix as well. She managed to stop the clock at only 45.69 seconds, aboard “Castle Forbes Myrtille Paulois.” Surprisingly, the Swiss rider Pius Schwizer in partnership with his champion mare “Nobless M” delivered a fantastic clear round in just 43.08 seconds, beating the Irish. “We had to take a lot of risks because the course was very complicated,” said the rider. It is not the first time Schwizer wins in CSI A Coruña. In fact, the equestrian took home this prestigious award in 2007 and, interestingly, riding his “top horse” as he himself likes to refer to it: “Nobless M”. “‘Nobless M’ is simply a spectacular mare,” said Schwizer. According to the rider, “she is a very strong animal who also has a lot of strength... I could see the second round would be difficult because there were very few clear rounds; for that reason I took my chances and considered each time what would be the right thing to do.”

Michel Robert and his mare “Kellemoi de Pepita” after completing a tight, faultless winning round in 41.90 seconds. The second place went to the pair formed by Australian Matt Williams and “Urleven Van De Helle,” who delivered a fastastic round in 49.18 seconds. Dutchman Leon Thijssen, riding “Tyson” was third, with a time of 41.25 seconds and four fault points for a knockdown. After the competition, Robert pointed out that in show jumping as well as in life “the most important thing is to persevere and not to fall apart.” Thus, he gave as an example the previous day, when he fell during the tiebreaker of Telefonica Grand Prix. “Look, yesterday was catastrophic, but I kept trying. I did it and today I won. That is the recommendation I can give to younger riders,” he said. It is not the first time that Robert wins in Casas Novas. The veteran has attended this competition for ten years, both in its winter and summer editions. “I have been here since this began, and I have already taken many awards, especially in the summer,” recollected Robert. “Next year I will be back again, why not?” he concluded.

GRAND PRIX AYUNTAMIENTO DE A CORUÑA Although thirty-three entries participated in this class, only eleven were able to go to the final round. This was a particularly complex course: in fact, only two riders were able to finish without faults. At the end, the top prize was won by the 64-year-old French rider

Four Premier Destinations Just mention the name of this region to feel on a sandy beach and hear the roar of the waves. However, it would be a mistake to reduce the Caribbean to a single scenery. Each of the destinations in the area is a land of contrasts, as well as natural and cultural wealth. The memories will remain in your heart: you will never forget the first time a turtle swam by your side, and the feeling of freedom of diving into the crystal clear waters of the sea, or of climbing mountains with tropical vegetation, where thousands of exotic birds take flight in a flash of color... Watches that you merely take care... for the next generation When we collect a precious item we usually do it in order to indulge a very selfish pleasure; but treasuring watches is not only a hobby, it is also an investment that we will leave behind for our children. By Cessare Bocardo

Know yourself replaced by new options that fit my collection better. There is also an “I have” folder, where I place information regarding the items I already own, including the price I paid for each piece, the certificates of authenticity and the seller’s information. The idea was to buy a watch only if it had remained at the top of my list for several months. Over time, I found that a lot of items, which I once thought were essential, were often replaced with pieces that suited my taste better. Some of these watches left my wish list when I came across pieces that I did not know before, with styles and mechanisms that I liked better. Other elements stayed on the list of needs, but with comments. Usually, over time I found better prices and tradesmen for the pieces I wanted; I even found interesting variations of the materials used for the case, strap, and of the dial’s color. This is only one of many ways for starting a collection; this one suits my purchasing habits. It is a fact that there are a lot of strategies, as many as there are collectors, so here is a pro-tip: before you start buying horlogerie, get in touch with your soul’s desires. This will be useful for defining your collection style, and help you design a purchasing method of your own.

Building my “I want” list For the collector there are many information sources, and the beginner must get in touch with each one of them. These resources include distributors, connoisseurs and collectors. There are also a lot of media articles about this issue, some will have to be bought by you, others will be free, but many will provide you with priceless information.

As in the early stages of a romantic relationship, it is easy for the new collector to be blinded by the lure of an exciting and exotic newfound hobby. Here is the last piece of advice that a newbie in this matter wants to hear: take your time. The more information you get, the more likely that your expectations will be satisfied by purchasing the perfect watch for your permanent collection. Even today I have trouble following my own advice, because a great variety of watches catches my attention, continuously tempting me to start a whole new collection. This is a flaw of my impulsive nature, which always falls for buying something without thinking it through. Such impulsivity is not always desirable in a collector. It is important to recognize your own disposition when starting a collection. Are you impulsive? Do you easily become enthusiastic about other people’s interests? Do you want to get together a Haute Horlogerie collection similar to your friends’? Do you find it exciting to do things in a rush? Or are you a methodical buyer who likes to think things over before acting? If from the beginning you know your own tendencies you can devise a strategy to focus on a style for your collection and ensure its success. For example, when I became interested in wristwatches I tried to avoid impulsive shopping sprees by following a system, like having a “virtual collection”. If time has taught me anything, it is that I tend to purchase articles that I will later sell—often with losses—to obtain pieces that are worth preserving. In order to avoid falling into this trap again, I started making a detailed list of the objects of my desire. This wish list has to include information such as manufacturer, model, list price, best price available, and a high-ress image downloaded from the internet. I have several lists on my database: the one labeled “I want” contains my current needs, while the one named “Don’t want anymore” gathers timepieces that used to be part of my wish list but has been

RETAIL POINTS Virtually every mall in the world has retailers. Watch collectors often have first contact with the object of their obsession in department

stores, jewelry stores and in specialized stores. Even though the pieces here are affordable, retail stores are not always the best option for your first purchase. Usually, department stores display a small variety of watches at reasonable prices. These kinds of stores are good for a little windowshopping, a practice that will get you closer to finding the perfect pieces for your “I want” list. Nowadays most people are looking for quartz watches, which are accurate, cheaper and, almost maintenance-free, a real treat for those who are not interested in treasuring a real horlogerie collection. A visit to the shops will help you get an idea of the size, style and materials of your interest. Salesclerks are always willing to help by providing the customer with different pieces to try on. However, due to the limited selection—and the emphasis on profits—, such stores rarely offer the best price available. A jewelry store is another mandatory stop for the new collector in the journey of becoming a horlogerie connoisseur. Usually jewelry stores offer a wide variety of watches, but you must be aware that this selection is often reduced to a group of manufacturers which holds an agreement with that specific boutique. In certain cases, jewelers are “authorized dealers” of particular brands. As authorized dealers they have access to their represented manufacturer’s whole line, and they can even act as a middleman for maintenance issues. When you buy an item from an authorized dealer you are purchasing a watch that includes a guarantee; most exclusive brands will only respect such a promise when the item is purchased from an authorized dealer. As an exchange for being an authorized dealer, the retailer often accepts the pricing policies of the brand, which restrict the discounts they can give their costumers. It is important to know if your retailer is authorized by the brands he sells, and what pros and cons that implies. Some jewelry stores also offer a funding service. This is done through a bank, and includes an interest fee at variable rates. Most collectors avoid this option because

it almost ensures you that the amount you pay for the watch will be higher that the one you would get if you eventually chose to sell it. There are specialty stores in most places where retailers gather. You will find small shops that offer low-level clocks and quartz watches— the kind that abounds in malls. There are also huge shops that offer a vast catalog, like Tourneau and Wempe. These are great places to see watches and get a notion of the variety of styles and options in the market. Specialty stores are intimidating to newbies, but do not hesitate! Ask to be shown those articles that interest you and try on the pieces you fall in love with. Do not forget that there is no guarantee that vendors at the specialty shop are really informed. In many cases a collector with a certain degree of refinement will know as much as the salesman, or even more. When you find a vendor who seems to know what he is talking about, it is your obligation to check the truthfulness of his words by running the information trough other sources. If he really knows his business, remember his name, so that when you return to the store you will know who to ask for help. Specialty stores can also be authorized dealers of the brands they offer, but remember this is not a rule. Specialized shops that are not authorized dealers usually offer an additional guarantee for their merchandise, but this should be considered a replacement of the one offered by the manufacturer. Once again, the manufacturer’s guarantees are usually only valid for items purchased through its authorized distributors. A particular type of shop is the factory outlet. Few manufacturers have outlet stores, although there are others that sell straight out of the factory if you visit them. Such stores have a large collection of brands from every manufacturer and provide better discounts than other kinds of shops.

“Unlike othercollections, watches offer the advantage of being meant to be used.”

There are many watch vendors over the internet. Sometimes it is difficult to determine whether they are authorized dealers, illegal sellers or regular people offering their products on a peer-to-peer basis. To fight these unauthorized distributors—usually known as the gray market—, manufacturers have banned their dealers from publishing their actual selling prices online. Some dealers sell over the internet as well as in their stores. They usually publish the manufacturer’s suggested retail price on their website, but you can contact them for a better price. They do not publish their discount prices to protect the manufacturer’s product from devaluation. If you want to buy a new piece, and the guarantee is important to you, buying your horlogerie at an authorized dealer is the best way to go. However, if cost is an important concern, perhaps a gray market dealer is what you need. Many of these traders have as good reputations as jewelers and specialty stores. They even provide discounts over the authorized dealer’s price because they have agreements with the manufacturer, and also because they operate with a low-profit margin. In addition, online retailers provide the best variety of old and discontinued models. Some are willing to exchange pieces and they are usually more flexible about the payment method. If you are interested in a watch and an online vendor has it, it is important to ask for references. On the internet there are other sources of information on these vendors. Keep on reading for more information.

ONLINE RETAILERS

ONLINE FORUMS ABOUT WATCHES By far the best resource for the watch collector is the internet, where you can read about other enthusiasts’ experience. A watch forum is the perfect virtual space where watch collectors can gather, display their treasures, ask for references about vendors, and sell their own watches. After visiting the shops both physically and online for some ideas of what is on the market, you must turn to the forums devoted to the style, model or watch manufacturer that has caught your attention. There are several types of online forums. Some are devoted to products of a specific manufacturer. A good example of this type is

the Seiko & Citizen Watch Forum (SCWF). Others, like onthedash. com are focused on the sale of chronographs. A site like this is the ideal starting place for those who would like to focus on a limited range of brands or seek particular information about a specific model. Other kinds of forums are devoted to a sector of interest. For example, the Poor Man’s Watch Forums (pmwf.com) informs the collector about watches that cost less than a thousand dollars. Those who consider themselves “purists” should navigate thepurists.com, a site focusing on higher-priced watches, ranging from one thousand dollars to hundreds of thousands. These forums contain links to other websites, and both have sales forums, a great option for people interested in selling or buying. Some of the best, and safest, transactions online are done through sites like these. Sites such as Military Watch Resource (mwrforum.net) do not categorize their entries by brand, collection or costs, but by function. This is very useful for beginners, because at first you will might feel intimidated by designs and manufacturers you did not even know existed. Other forums contain long sub-forums lists, classified according to interests or types of watches. Two of the most popular sites in this category are watchuseek. com and the Timezone site (timezone.com). Timezone, in addition to forums, provides timepieces reviews and brief columns on related issues. In my experience, members of watch forums are very friendly and helpful. Usually they like to receive new collectors and share details of their pieces. Often good manners are the only thing needed for a successful and productive visit to any of these sites, although some sales and trading forums have more specific criteria. In many sites there is a section of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s); it is highly recommended that you read it.

SPECIALIZED WEBSITES On the internet there are numerous collector websites and sites dedicated to this specific interest. Among them, Chuck’s Watch and Horology Page stands out for its hundreds of links to relevant material:, you can find it at chronomaddox.com. On this site Chuck Maddox gathers enough links for many years of web navigation.

An internet search on any aspect of your actual collection or about any item in your current wish list will give you a long list of sites to examine. Manufacturers also have websites of their own where they display their collection.

PRINTED RESOURCES — BOOKS There are many books about watches and how to collect them, as well as books about their technical details, and about the history of horology. Unfortunately, libraries tend to overlook this hobby, and a lot of these publications are addressed to collectors with very specific interests. Here are some great books that are essential for any beginner: 1. Collecting & Repairing Watches by Max Cutmore. Explains the theory behind timekeeping mechanisms and highlights some collection pieces. This one is essential for the serious watch collector, and must be the first one you read on the subject.

4. Complete Price Guide to Watches 2011 by Tom Engle, Richard E. Gilbert and Cooksey Shugart. The Complete Price Guide to Watches is always the standard guide most often used by pocket watch and wristwatch collectors. This annual guide provides a wealth of information useful to the novice or professional collector, or dealer. Now, in its 31th edition, it is still considered the most important book of its kind. The newest edition will be released on March 1, 2011. 5. Marking Time: Collecting Watches and Thinking about Time by Michael Korda. Unlike just about every other watch book this is not a catalog of different watch models with short descriptions. This is an excellent exercise in storytelling that mixes the historic development of watches with the author’s personal anecdotes. The bad news is that it has been discontinued, but with a little bit of luck you can find it on websites such as Amazon or Ebay. It is easy to waste a lot of money on books regarding timepieces, because frequently these are full of pictures, with little useful information. Even worse, some feature a lot of ads and advertorial disguised as articles. Just buy

books with relevant information, and save the money for purchasing the watches of your “I Want” list.

How to improve your wish list We have mentioned two major concerns in acquiring watches: where to buy them and where to get information regarding them. As the collector explores different resources, the ideas for his new collection are shaped. There are many questions to consider when building your own collection. First and foremost, what to collect? Some choose a very narrow area of interest. Some people believe that a proper collection should focus on your knowledge of watches; others think that this is an elitist approach and prefer collecting whatever they like. Fortunately for both kinds, treasuring watches not only satisfies an aesthetic interest, but also provides something functional. Whereas many collections are interesting for their beauty, watches offer the advantage of being meant to be used. It is important to consider these two attributes when building your collection. Whatever the approach, watch enthusiasts can and should wear their collections. When deciding what to collect, you must calculate realistic budget. Not everyone has the resources needed to breathe the thin air of a Patek Philippe vintage collector, but fortunately you can gather an interesting collection with more modest means. It may be useful to determine in advance the sum you are willing to spend on the pieces of your desire. Establishing a price range is very useful for investigating the attributes of your desired watches, in order to select the finest pieces. Some factors to consider are types, materials, mechanisms and styles.

TYPES Do you like digital or analog timepieces? Or perhaps something more complex? Do you want your collection to incorporate all three kinds?

3. Revolution in Time: Clocks and the Making of the Modern World, Revised and Enlarged Edition by David S. Landes. This is an informative and educational treatise on horological development and history. In the process, the book details an illuminating case study of the impact of competitive pressure on established industry.

2. Miller’s Wristwatches: How to Compare and Value (Miller’s Collector’s Guides) by Jonathan Scatchard. Features a compilation of the main watch categories and some brands worth collecting. A good sourcebook that the average beginner must read before hitting the stores.

“I think collecting watches is a hobby and an investment, especially if you buy exclusive pieces.” L.P.

How elaborated do you prefer your watches? Do you want chronographs, with an alarm and with two timezones? Or are you more interested in collecting watches according to their uses, for example, military, diving or dress watches? Some solve this dilemma by committing to just one kind. This type of collector will only fall for timepieces that meet their expectations. Many unconsciously initiate this process before starting a collection by purchasing a watch to wear at the office, another one for exercising, a formal one and a classic one, perfect for any occasion. Others are more limited and devote themselves from the beginning to a particular kind, such as dive watches.

MATERIALS Once you have chosen the kind of timepieces that you want to collect, take the materials into consideration. Do you prefer sports watches? The ones made in plastic, steel, or with valuable metals? One of my favorite materials in a watch is titanium. It is light, strong, hypoallergenic and very attractive. Others prefer stainless steel for its durability and maintainability, yet others choose gold for its value.

You might not want to restrict your collection to just one kind of material, but still it could be a starting point. You also have to choose between straps and bracelets. Straps are interesting accessories because they are easy to change depending on the occasion. Bracelets are strong metal bands that might increase the value of a watch, depending on the materials they are made of.

MECHANISMS A common interest in collections are mechanisms. The mechanism or “engine” of a watch is a technical marvel of mechanical engineering that many enthusiasts find intriguing. For example there is the ETA 2824-2 machinery found in a variety of clock styles and materials of the sort. A collection could be composed of ten different timepieces by various manufacturers that feature the same mechanism. Like the styles of timepieces, the mechanisms are classified by type: it is possible that each watch from a collection works with a different mechanism. For example, a collection might as well include an ETA 2824-2, a Valjoux 7750, a Lemania 5100, an ETA 2836 and a Poljot 3133, all from different manufacturers and all in different styles.

“The true collector knows and recognizes the value of a piece, regardless of its price.” A.V. STYLES

The variety of shapes, colors and design elements found in the world of watches is amazing. When combined with the technological marvels that operate these devices, this results in an almost infinite range of options for the collector. What kind of case are you interested on? The tonneau? Do you like a round case? A tank-style one? Do you prefer something more innovative? On the style of a watch, in most cases, relies its attractiveness. A collection can include a variety of styles as wide or as limited as you like. As with other segments of the fashion industry, styles and sizes vary by season and time. It is common to see revival vintage designs, and the avant-garde ones always capture the public’s eye. There are also classic, timeless styles that always look good. The only limit to the interest of a collector is the size of their imagination.

When purchasing an horlogerie piece you must follow one rule: always buy the best watch you can afford. As with rare wines, the state of the elements that integrate a collection is a factor that can increase or decrease its total value. Often, waiting to get a better price instead of buying a used watch is a way to save money at a long term, because it is less likely that the buyer will need to replace the items as the collection matures. An interesting note when buying timepieces: the creation and use of a collection will provide a lifetime of satisfaction. Although not everyone was surprised by the vintage Minerva you wear to work on Friday, when you come across an expert you will get a look of envious approval, and maybe make a new friend who shares your passion.

Sacramento International Horse Show Saturday night at the Sacramento International Horse Show had something for everyone—a clinic, a crowd-pleasing “human” high jump, a Parade of Champions, and of course, the $75,000 Grand Prix of Sacramento, a FEI World Cup qualifier. Of 21 entries representing six countries, four went clean over the Guilherme Jorge designed course. East coast rider Michelle Spadone on “Melisimo” (Morgan Hill Partners, owners) led the way in the jump off but had one rail. Mark Watring aboard “Green Sleeps Vioco,” owned by Horseworks etc. Inc, also had four faults. Knowing a clean ride could clench the win, Helen McNaught riding her own “Caballo” did just that. However last to go proved best when Australian Harley Brown riding “Cassiato” owned by the Oak Park Group LLC, went clean and fast for the win. After an awards presentation, spectators were invited to meet the riders at an autograph signing party and to the post Grand Prix party. Los Angeles National Horse Show Twenty-two horse and rider combinations tackled Olaf Petersen Jr.’s course in Saturday night’s $50,000 Grand Prix of Los Angeles, a World Cup qualifier. It was the ninth horse, “Cadett 7” (Little Valley Farms, owner), ridden by Ashlee Bond, that was the first to go clear. When she crossed the finish well under the time allowed, the crowd went wild. It was beginning to look as though she would be the only clean until the next to the last to go entered the arena. The Master of Faster Richard Spooner riding “Cristallo” lived up to his name and left every rail in place in a blazing time. Harley Brown nearly joined the jump off when he piloted “Cassiato” to a clear round, but stopped the clock .35 of a second over the time allowed for one fault and third place. When it came time for the jump off, Bond went in to win and once again jumped fast and clear, leaving Spooner no room for error. He set a blistering pace and just when it looked as though he would take the win, two rails fell near the end of the course, solidifying the blue for Ashlee Bond. Art in town

WEDGED DOWN AN ALLEY alongside a tow-truck depot and a heating-equipment warehouse in Santa Monica, the gallery owned by Rose Shoshana and abstract sculptor Manfred Müller resist ostentation. Frank Gehry designed the three-story building in 1990, with corrugated metal forming the exterior and a bare minumum of interior walls. This open, rough-hewn ambience nicely suits the minimalist tastes of the couple. Public-space exhibitions change bimonthly. Starting with the dean of color photography, William Eggleston, and continuing through the Rembrandt-like works of the large-format, invasive-surgery photographer Max Aguilera-Hellweg, Rose

Shoshana consistently presents intelligent documentary art. You’ve got Keith Carter’s witty works, Graciela Iturbide’s woman with iguanas, Birney Imes’ Juke Joints series, Mitch Epstein’s Vietnam visions, Wim Wenders proving film doesn’t have to move, and much more. An active participant of art fairs both stateside and internationally, Rose Gallery culls from a vast inventory of vintage, modern and contemporary photographs and selected works on paper to present a living catalogue of images that show the way we looked at life in the last century and the way we look at it now. Rose Gallery is committed to long-term personal relationships with artists and cli-

ents alike. Away from the artifice of the gallery setting, art is not so much a thing to worhip as a thing with which to coexist; the gallery’s staff is well aware of this fact.
