Girly COLORS THIS SEASON we witnessed such amazing pieces on the runways that we had a hard time choosing the highlights of the best looks and trends. We did notice that pastel colors are making a huge comeback: we’ve seen them in all the collections, and they are certain to be a hit. Plus the prints—we know it’s not always easy to bring prints and patterns together, but we say give it a try: it’s a total showstopper when done correctly. And finally, those fabulous monochrome looks are still in vogue but now in neutral colors.

 AVOWED BY THE STARS AND ICONS SINCE 1923 Ferragamo is a symbol for elegance, class and luxury with a profound understanding of beauty. His scientific and creative approach to shoes not only created his reputation as “shoemaker to the stars” but spawned many innovations such as the wedge and the cage heel. Top notes include a rose/pink pepper and blackcurrant buds, mixed with a fusion of jasmine, peony and roses and base notes of pannacotta with soft musk and a hint of wooden patchouli, a lovely reminder of a young Audrey Hepburn with a twist of the sassy and hip Zooey Deschanel. Certain to become a signature essence of the new elegant chic.

Every little girl dreams off a precious jewelry box to place her trinkets and all those collectible tokens of joy, now reflected in the presentation of this new perfume. Embellished with an endearing presentation, reminiscent of a precious box with a reinterpretation of the iconic Vara bow in gros grain and complemented with a sweet pink gold bubble on top that adds a elgance and grace to this hip scent, Ferragamo’s new baby will captivate those who wear it as well as those who sense its scent. The signature of a woman is her smell. Let yours be simple, natural, chic and stylish with Ferragamo´s Signorina. ferragamo.com

Comfortable but ultra chic WE SHOW YOU HOW TO WORK with the trendiest looks this spring so you can be the center of attention for all the right reasons. Casual attire is what jumps to the top of the must-have garments this spring, (forget about sweat pants, that’s always a huge no-no unless going to the gym). VALDERRAMA GOLF CLUB is located in Andalucia, the largest and southern-most region of Spain. A few miles north of Gibraltar, it is approximately a two hour drive from Cadiz and ninety minutes from Malaga. The climate is ideal for golf year-round. The fairways have often been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world. It is not an easy course- nor was it intended to be. It is designed to call forth thought and precision for every shot, so if you are an experienced golfer you will find this 3.94 miles Championship Course the perfect challenge to improve your technique as well as prove your prowess. According to the Golf World rankings, Valderrama is the number one golf course in mainland Europe, a position proudly held since 1989. No championship course in modern times has so swiftly achieved recogni-

tion like this. Also host to top to u r n a m e n t s , including the Volvo Masters from 1988 – 1996 and the Ryder Cup A must visit for devoted golf players, it’s important to know that Valderrama requires a deep and thorough study of the field; its many trees and strategic bunkers make it one of the most difficult courses ever. Forget about trying to keep your handicap, some of the world best golfers have tried without success. Valderamma is waiting for you…

Why not go and take a break by the sea? Doesn’t the thought of lying on the beach sipping a fruity umbrella drink sound amazing? Packing your bags for this type of weather looks easy but it can get quite complicated. We suggest bringing things that are simple and classic so you will look elegant wherever you go. To look good out at sea and return more beautiful than ever, below are some essential items. Men should pack some khaki shorts and a polo—these two items are indispensable— and later on you can change the polo to a linen shirt to evolve into an evening look. Inevitably you are going to get a little sun but let’s keep it in the safe side and wear a panama hat, sunglasses and a water proof sunscreen so you don’t come back looking more red than bronze.

As exciting as it is to hit the big city, with so many different activities that require different outfits it’s simply impossible to pack light. Go ahead and accept the fact that you are going to pay a little charge for all those extra bags—it doesn’t matter, looking beautiful has no price tag. No man can go on a trip to the city without some casual pants, an ultra stylish blazer and an eye-catching handkerchief. Let’s not forget that fabulous pair of sunglasses that will make every woman (or man) stop and look. Plan to dine at all the top restaurants and paint the town red.

The most important thing is to pack some comfortable shoes for the day, since you are going to be walking a bit. Ladies should grab some flats or ballerinas, and of course some really fabulous high heels for those nights out on the town. Don’t be without a statement necklace or two that will enhance all your attire.

The Young & the Talented

I

n a time of tremendous transition in the sport of show jumping, the perspective could be that the glass is half-empty, or worse. It is a fact that as a team the United States didn’t perform as expected in the 2010 World Equestrian Games (WEG) on our home turf of Kentucky, lost our place in the esteemed European-based FEI Nations Cup Top League (once known as the Super League) in 2011 and almost didn’t qualify for entry into the Olympics this year. As we begin our Selection Trials and Observation Events for the 2012 Olympic Team, which will ultimately be chosen in mid-June of this year, we edge closer to closing a chapter in history while a new one is already underway. In the short term our country will present the crème de la crème of show jumpers for the prestigious Olympic Games in London. And certainly we, and all involved with our team, would like to see a repeat of the last two Olympics by having our team come home with Gold Medals. We enter into this with great anticipation, and as a country we should look at the glass as half-full. But in the longer short term and beyond, with goals of returning to FEI’s Top League, competing at the 2014 WEG in Normandy

and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero, we are entering into a new era. By the end of 2012, our esteemed Chef d’Equipe George Morris will step down and Robert Ridland will take his place. Politically we will be welcoming in two new presidents, one for the affiliate organization the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) and one for our governing body, the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF). All the above political potential coupled with the young and talented group of riders I had the honor of interviewing for this article could, in my best estimation, certainly make the half-full glass overflow. It will be a careful drip process, not a fast pour, but the future of show jumping is filled with promise. After connecting with an impressive list of accomplished equestrians, none older than 21, I was duly impressed with not just their talent and accolades but their perspective. These young riders are our future. And this is only a partial list; there are more truly talented riders that aren’t included in this article but certainly rank among the ‘ones to watch’. Part One of this series features some tremendously talented teenagers.

Age first time on a horse: My parents put me in a basket on my first pony when I was 6 months old. Her name was “Shasha.” They used to tie my stuffed animals in trees and that’s how I learned to steer! Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: I always dreamed of it, even back on ponies. My parents were always so supportive and would tell me that one day I would be a grand prix rider. Age first time competing in the jumper ring: Twelve—I leased a children’s jumper and then I very quickly lost interest in hunters and equitation! Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: Thirteen—when we first went over to Europe I did a few small national grand prix classes but my age restricted what I could do until this year. Accomplishments include: 2012—Earning the #1 and #5 spots on the USEF Long List for the Olympic Team—I’m still in shock about that! Earning 1st, 3rd, and 4th in the WEF Challenge Cup, Week 6. 2011—Winning a car in Bagnaia, Italy! 2010—Winning the CSI** at the Gucci Masters in France.

Equestrian goals: Become Beezie! I truly want to become the best rider I can, compete on teams, make it to championships, and give the sport my all. Education: I’m attending the University of Katie Prudent. I’m not planning to go to college at this time, just focus on developing a well-rounded and strong equestrian education. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? That’s a pretty broad question. In my time as a young rider to date, I’ve had a lot of support. Over the last few years, Artisan Farms very generously hosted the Young Rider series and the USET created the Young Rider tour. In general there isn’t a huge percentage of kids that take the sport really seriously, but more as a hobby until college. Maybe through these young rider programs will transition more kids into grand prix classes and develop their desire to become international riders after competing at a higher level.

AGe: 18

Age first time on a horse: One. Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: Twelve—I think as soon as I went to my first major show in Wellington. I watched the Sunday afternoon class, that’s when I knew. Age first time competing in the jumper ring: Twelve—in the Children’s Jumpers. Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: Fourteen—Brownland Farms in TN. I had

Favorites: Food: Echo’s Chocolate chip soufflé—it’s life changing. TV: Psych I. It is television’s best kept secret. And Sex and the City. Songs: Anything by The Kooks or Phoenix, Avicii or Kaskade, and some old Ashanti circa 2006 has definitely made a revival on my iPod. Name your three top role models: Beezie Madden, Katie Prudent, and my Dad (Murray Kessler).

the last jump down in the Welcome Grand Prix and the Grand Prix—two weeks in a row. I had the last rail down for quite a long time until I was able to figure that out. Accomplishments include: 2010—I went to Europe as a part of the Young Riders team. A great experience. 2011—I nailed the 2nd place in the USEF Talent Search Finals. End of 2011—chosen to work and travel with George Morris for a month. A tremendous learning and networking experience. Equestrian goals: That’s a tricky question. I want to be respected in the sport and have a good sponsor one day. Want to be an overall great horseman—don’t want to just hand off the reins—working with Ivan Rakowsky puts me in the best position for this—he knows absolutely everything about horses.

2012 USEF Selection Trials— FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival.

Education: I am furthering my education every day working for Ivan. You can always go back to school, I choose to keep riding for now. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? There’s opportunity for everybody if you work hard. Even in Europe you have to work your way to the top. This came up at one of George’s clinics and the answer is there are no free handouts anywhere. You have to put in the time, work hard, focus on the future and set goals. There’s no structure in our system—what does it matter if you’re #1 ranked Junior Jumper Rider? Nothing. No ranking list. Why not have a 21 & under ranking list? Everybody likes to be #1. There’s a lot of people who ride well in the mid-west for example—this is one way to recognize, even discover, them. A structure for moving up. Favorites: Food: Italian food. TV: Top Gear. Songs: Avicii (Skrillex Remix), Unison—Porter Robinson, Resurrect Paradise—Kap Slap. Name your three top role models: McLain Ward, Beezie Madden and Margie Goldstein-Engle.

age: 19

Age first time on a horse: Around age 2, lessons by age 5. Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: Early on. But my mom was very adamant about me not doing the jumpers until I was older and more experienced. I was always begging to get in the jumper ring. Did a lot of hunters and eq—which gave me a really good base. Teaches accuracy, how to deal with pressure, solid flatwork—all good stepping stones and I enjoyed doing it. Age first time competing in the jumper ring: Thirteen—in the Children’s Jumpers on Mister Mind. Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: Fifteen—at Showpark in Del Mar, CA, on “True Love”, who was an amazing horse. Accomplishments include: 2009—Winning the European Youngster Cup—a turning point in my riding. 2011—My success the HITS Desert Circuit. 2012—The day I got into Stanford University and the day I earned a place on the USEF Long List for the Olympic Team. Equestrian goals: Right now I’m just trying to balance going to college and riding. My goal for the rest of the school year is to be respectable in the rest of the big class-

es, especially the upcoming Olympic Trials. I have the horse (“Nemo 119”) and so we are going for the experience. Come summer I will be back in Germany with the Beerbaums and I’ll focus on competing more heavily again. Education: Stanford. Eventually graduate school. Interested in humanities, foreign languages, foreign relations, anthropology, psychology, economics… Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? I think it definitely does, there is always room for improvement. It shows the system is working when there a lot of young riders doing the bigger Grand Ps and planning to do the Olympics trials. So the Euro tour, Young Riders, Prix de States—all those YR have worked hard to compete and get good miles—Spruce and Euro. I think there is a solid group of YR coming up. Katie Dinan—Jessica Springsteen—Catherine Passmore—Saer Coulter—tons of young riders are making names for themselves.

age: 19

Age first time on a horse: Two. Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: Seven—when I was riding small ponies. Age first time competing in the jumper ring: Thirteen—in the Children’s Jumpers on a very safe 22-year-old campaigner! Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: Fifteen—on Perfekt in Conyers. Accomplishments include: 2011—winning the WIHS Equitation Finals. On the jumper side, winning my first grand prix and winning team gold at Young Riders are my standout achievements. Equestrian goals: I would like to compete in a major championship, whether it is the World Cup Finals or the Olympic Games. Short term, my goal is to get experience in international level grand prix events with my jumpers, “Hennessey” and “Aslan 193”.

Favorites: Food: Anything Mexican. TV: South Park. Songs: all Jim Hendrix songs are on my top and I like Spanish guitar like Rodrigo & Gabriella. Name your three top role models: Definitely my trainers Meredith Michaels Beerbaum and Markus Beerbaum, they are both extremely hard-working and dedicated, which is always something to aspire to. I love to watch top tennis players like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. It is such a mental game and I think riding is like that.

Education: I graduated from Rivers Academy last summer and am currently in a gap year. I will be attending Tufts University in the fall where I plan to study either International Relations or Economics. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? I do believe that the sport as a whole encourages it. However, I think that there are limited divisions for young riders in the United States. The gap between juniors and grand prix level riding needs to be bridged somehow. I believe the NAJYRC in Kentucky and the Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix events in Wellington are great stepping-stones, but there does need to be a focus on development. Favorites: Food: A lobster roll from Legal Seafood. TV: “Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives” with Guy Fieri. I am obsessed with the Food Network. Songs: As of now, “Levels” by

Avicci, “She Doesn’t Mind” by Sean Paul, and “Your Surrender” by Neon Trees Name your three top role models: My parents, Stacia Madden and Max Amaya—they are my trainers as well as champions in the saddle.

Age first time competing in the jumper ring: Twelve—in the Children’s Jumpers. Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: Fifteen—I competed in my first Grand Prix at HITS Saugerties. Accomplishments include: Most memorable moments of my riding career: 2011— Winning the Individual Gold Medal at the North American Young Riders Championships. 2012—Winning my first major Grand Prix, the $50,000 Horseware Ireland Grand Prix at WEF, week 3. Named on the USEF long list for the 2012 Olympic Team, week 11. Equestrian goals: To become as competitive as I can at the Grand Prix level and to one day represent my country in international competition. Education: I will be a freshman at Harvard College this fall.

well—I was 2nd, double clear, horse on “Skara Glens Basel”. I did a couple in Kentucky as well and picked up ribbons. Accomplishments include: That’s tricky. I’m always looking at the next thing to do or to achieve. Earning second in my first two grand prix classes, that felt good. I truly enjoy just being able to compete in Wellington. I find catch riding rewarding and I work with very supportive people. Equestrian goals: Really just to take as far as I can go. Keep on working my way up, competing in bigger classes. Expanding my horsemanship. There’s never an end, I’m always learning. I am driven by challenge and I want to take that drive as far as I can. Education: I am home schooled now. The program keeps me on track. My next career step is to turn professional. I will go to college; I feel the education will have a direct and indirect effect on my equestrian career and on my life. I’m just not certain of my schedule. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? I’ve had the chance to ride a lot of horses in the Eq, Jr. Hunter and Jr. Jumpers classes as well as in the open

Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? The United States offers a great foundation for riders in their junior ranks with the highly competitive junior hunter, junior jumper, and equitation divisions. The year-end finals and national championships for each hold significant prestige that many people set their eyes on before aging out of the junior division. When riders have aged out of the junior divisions, the road forward is less clear. Like any sport, “making it” to the top as a young talent is not going to be without its ups and downs and is a hard task. However, show jumping is unique in the fact that many developing young riders are able to compete among the world’s best. I think it’s inspiring to see many up and coming riders placing in big Grand Prix against some of the world’s highest ranked riders and even competing at the World Cup Finals in their early twenties.

divisions. Catch riding teaches me about the day-to-day aspects of the business—not just riding, but all the details. I’ve learned so much about being a pro and how to manage myself professionally—on a horse and off. That is a big part of the sport. It isn’t just about having money—if you take the challenge of not having the family funds to support you can turn that into a positive. It inspires you to ride better, earn it, put a lot of work into it—it really drives me and I relish in the challenge of that. Opportunities come from the path well ridden. Favorites: Food: Good organic from the earth food. TV: History Channel and National Geographic, when I have time. Songs: So much good music… Pink Floyd: The Wall, the whole album runs together like a movie or book. Ska mixed with a punk sound like Operation Ivy. Acoustic guitar like Dave Matthews. Name your three top role models: I would say everybody’s my role model—whether they are showing me something to do or something not to do… Guess if I had to name the influential so far it would be my parents and the trainers I work with. Ken Smith has a great work ethic. Bill Schaub knows so much about horses. And they are both incredible horsemen.

Favorites: Food: Blueberries, sushi, frozen yogurt. TV: Downton Abbey Songs: Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep”, Train’s “Drive By”, Ellie Goulding’s “Lights”. Name your three top role models: My trainer McLain Ward, my parents, and the French mathematician and physicist Emilie du Châtelet.

Woman of... ExprEssions

Stella McCartney Fashion Designer

Born into celebrity status, stella mccartney is a key name in the fashion world. not only because of her outstanding designs on the international runways, but also due to her fight against the use of furs. Stella is establishing an important and valuable trend. WHAT IS LUXURY? It is a flower that you know will whither; a remembrance you want to keep forever in your memory, but that is totally ephemeral... Luxury for luxury’s sake is not for me and I feel that younger generations absolutely reject old stereotypes. Simplicity is the ultimate luxury because you can completely reflect who you are. For me, wearing fur is a demodé proposal. Diamonds? Fur? A Bentley? That is not luxury in my book.

ETHICAL FASHION There is still a long way to go, but nowadays people are more aware of what they eat or that killings animals to make a purse is not ethical or responsible. I have chosen not to work with fur out of compassion. But there are others that support my position. In a report published by the United Nations it is stated that the most effective method to reduce the environmental impact is by reducing carbon emissions. From my persepctive, we must reduce consumption of meat, in every way we can.

FASHION REFERENCES I don’t feel that I identify with any designer in particular, but I love Vivienne Westwood: I love her sense of humor, allureness, with a dash of punk. All her work is fun, and it looks incredible! For my own work I don’t get inspired by others, everything comes from my time with my family, my friends, my city, the street... and, above all, my own intuition. I do not seek trends from the outside… Besides, traveling with three kids when looking for fresh ideas is rather difficult.

ANIMAL RIGHTS CRUSADER Sometimes I find it frustrating to observe other designers are not able to put an end to the yesteryear structure of the fashion in-

dustry, instead of understanding the current needs of the market, understand the street fashion trends and evolve. To them, luxury is still associated with the use of fur. Basically, it is a matter of education. Killing a fox to make a fur coat is simply cruel. Unfortunately, many designers do not understand this or even care at all. They think only of revenues. They find it easy and profitable to work with furs. It’s a matter of priorities. Because if you want to you can say no, as I do.

THINGS COME EASIER THANKS TO YOUR FATHER? I honestly do not know if it has made things more difficult or easier, everything has a light and a dark side. The greatest gifts that I have received from my father are the moral values he instilled in me, and his love for nature. It is true that thanks to my parents I could start working with Christian Lacroix in Paris, when I started my career at age 15, but at the end of the day, a name is not everything. Your work must speak for itself.

MAH JONG SOFA The Mah Jong upholstered in fabrics by Missoni Home.

Avant-garde when first created, iconic today, the Mah Jong sofa is proud to celebrate its 40th anniversary. The composition gives the owner or decorator the opportunity to completely reorganize a living space, thereby redefining, and repositioning, the term “sofa.” It can be armchair, sofa, lounge chair or bed—a space in which to rest, to play or to lounge. PAINTER, SCULPTOR, DESIGNER… Hans Hopfer designed sofas that are, for many, the indisputable “signature” of Roche Bobois’ collections. In the 1970s, Hopfer’s innovative informal approach to comfort had a profound influence on the way people furnished and arranged their living space. In 1971, he created the Mah Jong, a sofa based on total freedom of function and form. From a starting point of three basic elements that can be set at angles or overlaid, the Mah Jong allows limitless options of composition.

Elements of the Mah Jong “dressed” by Jean Paul Gautier.

By encouraging Mah Jong sofa owners to arrange the elements in ways that suit their taste at the time, the final look could change the landscape of the living room, offering a whole new approach to the way we view and arrange the spaces in which we live. The three basic elements of the Mah Jong can be stacked, aligned with each other and grouped. Seat cushion, straight back or corner… one can play with the shape and the height to create the composition desired: corner sofa, straight sofa, armless sofa or day bed. It encourages experimentation and breaks the rules of formal living, reflecting the nonconformist era in which it was born. Over the years, Roche Bobois has called upon those with creative talent to “dress” special editions of the Mah Jong. Each of these artistic collaborators has managed to express a new seductive and surprising facet of the Mah Jong without changing the core design. “Dressed” by Kenzo Maison, Missoni Home and Jean Paul Gaultier, this “free form” modular seating is the reference point for fully modular creative design. The Mah Jong is handmade in an Italian workshop that practices processes and techniques similar to those of the “Haute Couture” fashion industry. Each component is individually hand-stitched using a method similar to that of mattress making, with the utmost attention paid to the detailing. Upholstered in exclusive fabrics, each unit is unique. The result - every Mah Jong sofa is a one-of-a-kind creation. roche-bobois.com

The Cube - Milan

By comBining revolutionary design, fantastic cuisine and stunning locations, The Cube by Electrolux is taking fine dining to a new level. With transient locations traveling across Belgium, Italy, Russia, Switzerland and Sweden, new spectacularly designed restaurants setup among some of Europe’s most famous

landmarks inspire guests with wonderful meals, events and once-in-a-lifetime views. This 150-square-meter space, appointed in wood, glass, iron and Corian, marries the Scandinavian design tradition of the company with innovative updates like a moving table and open-view kitchen that provides a veritable stage for the chefs. The Cube by Electrolux currently sits on the Piazza del Duomo, in the heart of Milan. Dominated by the Cathedral, the Piazza is filled with monumental and impressive buildings that boast historical, artistic, and cultural importance. Overlooking this stunning scene, The Cube brings in some of the most famous Italian chefs—namely Andrea Canton and Emanuele Scarello—who combine Michelin star cooking with state of the art design. Seating only 18 guests, it is an exclusive gastronomic experience not to be missed by any food aficionado.

The aim of the project is to create a surprising, yet inspiring experience that will ultimately stimulate you to explore your own creative boundaries next time you entertain friends or family at home. The chef, who finds great delight in sharing his experience, is truly an integral part of the event by providing an atmosphere more akin to cooking with friends than visiting a traditional restaurant. The state-of-the-art lighting, sound and ambience systems ensure the most appropriate moods for each dining occasion. And to relive the memories of the night, you can download the music from Electrolux web site and listen to it again and again. After neArly 20 yeArs of operating private aircraft in the San Diego area, Schubach Aviation is the region’s leading air charter service company. Firmly believing that the safety, quality, and integrity of a charter flight should never be compromised, they are extremely selective when purchasing their aircrafts. And now, they welcome a new member to their luxurious fleet: a Gulfstream IV SP (G-IV SP) private jet. One of the world’s most sought-after largecabin business jets, the G-IV SP has a reputation for safety, flight performance and reliability. The jet is powered by twin Rolls-Royce turbofans that provide high thrust output with lowerthan-normal noise emission. The SP stands for Special Performance, with an increased payload, increased landing weight and increased range over its predecessor, the G-IV. Boasting a range of 4,220 nautical miles with eight passengers and reserves, and the roomiest cabin in its class, the G-IV SP easily connects San Diego to Honolulu, or New York to Paris, while also providing spacious, comfortable, short-range travel. With 157 square feet of cargo space, the aircraft can store enough luggage for long stopovers at destinations anywhere at home and abroad. Accommodating up to 14 passengers and three crewmembers, Schubach Aviation’s G-IV SP is generously appointed with two lavatories, a full galley with oven and microwave, a private lounge with double club seating plus a berthable sleeping

configuration for transcontinental or transoceanic travel. Other amenities include Wi-Fi capability; an iridium satellite phone and laptop printer, a CD player, two DVD players and flat-screen monitors for movies at each passenger seat. With a cruising speed of 460 knots or 529 miles per hour at a maximum altitude of 45,000 feet, the G-IV SP aircraft has set numerous records for speed and distance traveled around the world. Schubach Aviation charter client’s will ar-

rive both comfortably and quickly in this elegant and spacious executive jet. The newly added G-IV SP joins Schubach Aviation’s existing fleet of 13 aircraft, which includes two wide-bodied Bombardier Challenger 601s; five Hawkers; a Lear 35; two Citation Jets, and two factory-new CJ3’s. With a fleet of that caliber, it’s no mystery why Schubach Aviation is San Diego’s first choice for private air charter service. schubachaviation.com

Saut Hermès Bottom: Malin BaryardJohnsson on “H&M Reveur de Hurtebise”

After the success of the first two years, the Saut Hermès returned once again to the Grand Palais on March 16-18, 2012. The greatest riders from around the world gathered to participate in this international CSI5* show-jumping competition under the glass nave of this legendary Parisian monument. By Jessica RodRigues.

París

T

he story of the 2012 Saut Hermès started Saturday night, when the competing teams of two were randomly drawn at the famous 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré location; a moving moment as the unique coupling of riders is unveiled for this four round event. “When I found out destiny had worked in my favor by coupling me with Malin Baryard-Johnsson, I was delighted and I didn’t hide the fact from my team,” said German rider Ludger Beerbaum. “I was really lucky, because I have known Malin for a while. I know what a quality rider she is and we get on well. It was a truly lucky draw.” Malin, while also pleased, had a slightly different feeling regarding the draw: “When I knew I would be with Ludger, I was obviously happy, but at the same time, I felt the pressure because he’s a perfectionist who always tries to give his best. So, yes, I admit, I was a bit nervous because... Ludger is Ludger.” However the German-Swedish duo dominated the Saut Hermès as the only pair to ride four clear rounds. The class is designed as a fun format for the spectator, “but is a very serious event for us,” stressed the former German champion. “Even if it has a more fun side, particularly when the teams are drawn by lots. With two riders, there is no big strategy to be put in place. I really enjoyed it.” As the blonde Swede confirmed, “of course it is a serious event. Firstly, because there is a big purse to win and that brings the pressure I was talking about. I really felt it before the class, because it was Ludger, but also because in a class like this you’re not only riding for yourself but for a team.”

A mere seventy-four hundredths of a second separated the two Irish riders Denis Lynch and Billy Twomey in the jump-off of the Prix de la Ville de Paris. Because he finished just a touch slower, Lynch had to actually settle for sixth place in the class. Twomey and his fourteenyear-old partner, “Romanov”, clinched the win. This chestnut stallion can do it all—hold his own on the Irish Nations Cup team, winners in La Baule last year, or finish on the podium in the challenging indoor 2011 FEI World Cup Finals in Leipzig, where he finished second... and also speed to the win in a 1.45m jump-off at the Grand Palais.

“I am especially happy for my horse, because he has not been jumping so well recently. He is coming back into form and has won the jump-off here: everything is going great.” Before stopping the clock in 33.21, the leading time was held by the Ukrainian rider Katharina Offel aboard “Charlie” (33.55) who had just taken a tenth of a second of the fast time set by Marcus Ehning on “Sabrina” (33.65) and Roger Yves Bost with “Nikyta d’Elle” (33.65). It was an incredible class. Twomey, who improved the time by 34 hundredths, had the last word: “I didn’t ask myself if it was possible to beat all those riders, I just had to try, that’s all there is to it. It’s always important to win a class in a ‘five star’ competition, but this is a com-

11Equ_Hermes.indd 53

petition unlike any other. In any case, I really like Paris; the city brings me luck.” The parting comment alludes to his win last December in the Final of the 2011 Rolex IJRC Top 10 in Villepinte riding “Tinka’s Serenade”, the same horse he competed on in the Grand Prix Hermès.

Offel VicTOry In a field of thirty-seven horses, thirty-five year old Katharina Offel posted the fastest time (32.99) for a sweet victory in the Grand Prix Hermes. Born in Cologne, Germany, where the competition for invitations to equestrian events is fierce alongside the Beerbaums, Kutschers, Ehnings and Ahlmanns, Offel jumped at the chance to

change nationalities in 2005. Now representing the Ukraine, she can benefit from invitations to major competitions like the Saut Hermès. Indeed, she bested German rider Christian Ahlmann, who after stopping the clock one-hundredth of a second faster than Twomey on “Tinka’s Serenade” (33.37 vs 33.38) thought the win was his to claim, which he had done the previous year as well. Ahlmann confided that his horse “Taloubet Z” was “even stronger than a year ago. And I hope he will keep this great form until this summer,” he added, alluding to the Olympics in London. However, Katharina, who can also dream of the Olympic Games since she has already qualified individually, was the strongest and boldest of the day. She explained, “I have been riding ‘Cathleen’ for three years and am getting to know her really well. She finished 2nd in the World Cup in Lyon last November, and after that she had a dip in form and I rested her at the end of the year after the World Cup in Mechelen, in Belgium.” Emotional after earning the first triumph for a woman in Grand Prix Hermès, Offel exclaimed, “This is the most wonderful victory in my career! I love the Saut Hermès at the Grand Palais. It’s really an exceptional place. I can’t wait to get back home as quickly as possible and give my son a big hug. That will be my way of celebrating this win.”

ROUX AT THE LANDAU

London’s

FATHER AND SON Albert and Michel Roux Jr are working together for the first time in 19 years in a new collaboration with The Langham, London. This new partnership brings the Roux’s legendary culinary expertise and creativity to the newly re-named Roux at The Landau, their second West End address. Bringing together the formidable talents of Albert and Michel Roux Jr with their new talent Chris King, builds on the restaurant’s acknowledged standards of elegance and seamless service with exceptional new food. After gaining some solid years of experience at restaurants throughout the world, Chris King is an excellent choice as Chef de Cuisine. Michel Roux Jr describes King as “A rising star and his menus reflect the Roux trademark style of classically-constructed French dishes, blended with today’s tastes for lighter choices.” Although the menu changes seasonally, some delectable examples we recommend include the light cauliflower velouté with lilliput capers, which was delightfully delicate and exquisitely flavored, and the roast rack of Romney Marsh lamb with artichokes and cepes en persillade, or—if you want to share a classic Roux dish—the roast Croise duckling glazed with spices and zests, purple top turnips and sage buttered cabbage. The cheese board is a mixture of French and British and we would strongly recommend the blood orange and pistachio soufflé with honey andsclove ice cream. t es S Duchstylishly updated yet traditional dining Service is attentive and the a St room presentation is perhaps the best in town. LOCATED IN THE HEART OF BELGRAVIA, La Poule au Pot has been a gourmet institution since 1962. The rustic interior, with its intimate nooks and festoons of dried flowers, grapevines and bric-à-brac, has changed little since the 1960’s and offers a warm provençal ambience that will transport you to the south of France in the middle of Pimlico Green. Thanks to its cozy and intimate corners, it comes as no surprise that many critics consider this restaurant as one of the most romantic places to dine in London. The cuisine is classic French: excellent ingredients, generous portions and fine cooking, presented with exuberant panache. The menu, in French, offers several courses from hors d’oeuvres to volailles et gibiers deE saison and more. The main courses are simply big helpings of at on wonderfully delicious food. Everything Te from escargots to tarte Tatin and chocolate mousse, not rra ce forgetting boeuf bourguignon and the obligatory poule au pot, are some of the delicious surprises coming from the kitchen. The wine list is honest, thoughtful and interesting. House specialties change with the season, so don’t forget to ask for the chef’s recommendation. Service is first rate and truly French, with a healthy dose of insouciance, leavened with a good sprinkling of joie de vivre. o Rd Pilmic In warmer months, the extensive outdoor seating area makes the restaurant one of the most desirable alfresco destinations in the capital. e Bon Appetit! pouleaupot.co.uk arrac eld T

CLARIDGE’S

RIVER CAFE

LE PONT DE LA TOUR

OVER THE YEARS, Claridge’s has perfected the art of hospitality and has found the perfect partner in Gordon Ramsay, one of only three chefs in the UK to hold three Michelin stars. The lavish interior by Thierry Despont is gorgeous, an Art Deco outrage of caramel and gold. It’s a pleasantly quiet dining room with all the soft furnishings and molded walls, so you are able to converse with your dining partner in quiet tones and still be heard. Ramsay along with Head Chef Steve Allen create elegantly presented modern European dishes using only the finest British produce available. The à la carte and the six-course Menu Prestige are ideal for special occasions, while the set lunch menu has made this Michelin-starred experience an affordable indulgence. If you can stand the heat, you can also watch Ramsay himself at work at the Chef’s table in the kitchen. The myriad of waiters—the staff-diner ratio is one to one— keeps the show gliding smoothly. Dishes like the starter of pressed foie gras marinated in Beaumes de Venise, or the main course of Oxfordshire Lamb Tarragon Jus, are guaranteed to delight the palate, and the wine list is a real treat for t connoisseurs. claridges.co.uk se S hhou

THE DINING SPACE is both inspiring and intimidating. The floor plan is completely open—exposed kitchens and wood fire oven, extra large windows, and at the end of the room, just in front of the kitchen, one bears witness to a powerful head chef at her helm. The River Café was started by Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers in 1987 and was inspired and influenced by their experience of living and cooking in Italy. The importance of seasonality, robust flavors—the connection between a regions food and its wine—still remains at the heart of The River Café today. Though the restaurant has grown in the twentythree years, the first principles of the restaurant – the open kitchen, wood burning oven and a menu that changes for each service, remain to this day. The River Café was designed by the architect Richard Rogers, and overlooks the River Thames. In the summer, tables are placed outside amongst the kitchen garden, full of Italian vegetables stretching to the riverbank. t The fish is wild and caught from the e S British coast, alin ch organic farms, o with vegetables coming from local L t yS though there is also a delivery twiceaarfreweek from the P Milan Market. Fresh pastas are made daily, as are the tarts, cakes and ice creams. rivercafe.co.uk

ADORED BY CELEBRITIES, city folk, courting couples, London visitors and local residents alike, Le Pont de la Tour is a riverside gem. With traditional yet innovative French cuisine in an awe-inspiring setting by Tower Bridge, the iconic London landmark from which they take their name, the restaurant interior recreates an elegant ocean liner dining room. Watch the boats and world go by, while enjoying the lifestyle of a bon vivant. In fine weather you can dine on the famous riverside terraces that in the summer transform into an open-air crustacean bar. The Bar & Grill at Le Pont de la Tour offers bistrostyle cooking in relaxed surroundings. At dinner, it metamorphoses into a candle-lit French brasserie, with a pianist playing in the background. Renowned chef Tom Cook brings culinary excellence to Le Pont de la Tour with dishes that are simple yet full of new and surprising flavors. Among the favorites are Sole Mousseline, Lobster Sauce, Samphire, and the classic Crêpes Suzette. Le Pont de la Tour’s master sommelier Nicolas Clerc is an award-winning expert— Ruinart’s Sommelier of the Year in 2007—who oversees an impressive collection of Old and New World wines, including some rare Grand Crus. lepontdelatour.co.uk

TALISTONE To begin this journey, guests are asked to choose an engraved Talistone, inscribed with an intention that best resonates with them. By setting the intention for you and your therapist, this stone is the core of this unique treatment. Then, to enhance your personal experience, a combination of water, heated river stones, gemstones and plant extracts are integrated into the massage. Melt away stress, relieve tense muscles and reconnect your sense of profound sacredness.

An Eastern Asian Massage for total well-being. The Pantai Luar massage uses two heated sachets of herbs, coconut and limes that exude a warm and exotic fragrance during the massage. Using specialized massage techniques, as the heated sachets are passed over the body several times and cooled, extra manipulation and pressure is applied to the muscles, releasing herbs and essential oils into the skin.

LYMPHATIC MASSAGE This slow, rhythmic massage boosts immune function while releasing stress from the nervous system. The treatment is combined with traditional massage for maximum nourishment of the muscles and lymph system. Lymphatic massage purifies your body from within, leaving you energized and renewed.

WILDFLOWER FACIAL CLEOPATRA MILK AND HONEY COCOON Begin with a milk and honey sugar scrub over the entire body to refine dry, dehydrated skin, followed by Cleopatra’s secret recipe of warm milk, honey and oils that will regenerate, nourish and provide a protective treatment for your skin. The crowning touch is a pampering scalp and facial massage while floating weightless in the warmth of the Spa Atlantis Soft Pack cocoon bed.

A bouquet of floral remedies—organic rose, lavender, chamomile, calendula and jasmine—calms and nourishes. This hydrating facial, customized for sensitive, dry or rosaceous skin types, cleanses and revitalizes, assisting in a more even complexion. Rosehip extracts with antioxidants renew your skin, while local wildflower essences sooth the soul. Neck, shoulder, hand and foot massage are also a part of this treatment.

VILLA-DUBROVNIK DUBROVNIK, CROATIA THERE HAS BEEN a lot of hype around Croatia for the past few years. The nasty thing about hype seems to be that it can die off at a considerable speed. However hype aside, consider a few facts before turning the page to look for the next destiantion: Dubrovnik, a sea-port and a UNESCO world heritage site, in Croatia, is one of the most beautiful destinations in the Adriatic Sea. Back in the nineteenth century Lord Byron was not exaggerating when he called Dubrovnik “The pearl of the Adriatic”—it truly is a remarkable place with a walled-in port of red-tiled Mediterranean houses, marble streets and baroque churches, monasteries and museums. Beyond the city there are scenic cliffs, secluded

coves, beaches and wooded peninsulas. Dubrovnik is also home to Croatia’s most exclusive boutique hotel: Villa Dubrovnik. Unfortunately Lord Byron wasn’t able to live in a time where he could have had the pleasure of staying at Villa Dubrovnik. However it is likely fortunate he was not a guest, for this charming Adriatic spot of luxury does not need a debauched romantic poet wreaking havoc on the tranquility and privacy that characterizes this resort. Situated on the cliffs of St. Jacob’s precinct, Villa Dubrovnik boasts spectacular views of the old city and Lokrum Island and encompasses 65 residences—some with private entrances, services and facilities and others innovative in their level of luxury

If you seek maximum comfort and complete privacy, Villa Dubrovnik will give you even more than that.

and comfort. The Villa has a two-floor spa; an outdoor/indoor pool; a private beach at your disposal with an even more unique feature, Romance Beach. A private pebblestone two-person cove carved in the stones below the Villa Dubrovnik gardens, you are required to ask for a reservation with the hotel concierge for full-day privacy. In terms of dining and bar service Villa Dubrovnik’s SkyBar holds some of Dubrovnik’s most spectacular views of the Old City and although Italian cuisine might seem to have eclipsed more traditional culinary options in Dubrovnik, Restaurant Pjerin still maintains a more authentic take on Mediterranean cuisine, partly due to its use of local products from sea and land. Don’t plan on Italian or French wines in your stay at Dubrovnik, Croatia has great options that you can only savor during your stay, since production is too small to export.

With spectacular views of the Old City and Island Lokrum, all 56 residences of the Villa Dubrovnik provides legendary service as they embodies contemporary luxury and refined elegance.

With that in mind, we recommend the Caribbean, also known as West Indies due to its location on the south and west of the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. Sweet moments DISCOVER THE WORLD OF SWEET WINE, FULL OF RICHNESS AND REFINEMENT, TRUE JEWELS OF PLEASURE. By Edel Schaub Moss, Sommelier.

CHÂTEAU D’YQUEM PREMIER GRAND CRU SUPÉRIEUR, SAUTERNES, BORDEAUX, FRANCE Described as the greatest sweet wine of the world, it rarely has any competition despite the existence of other outstanding estates. And now, after centuries of family ownership, Yquem was sold to Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy in 1999. Characterized by its complexity, concentration and sweetness, relatively high acidity and longevity, with proper care, a bottle will keep for a century or more… With a golden beautiful color shows intensity and spicy notes, big and rich, with pure honey and essence of pear. Fresh and chewy. Sumptuous. Sublime with foie gras, oysters, mussel salad, Roquefort cheese.

LV WINE CASE A golden treasure such as Château d’Yquem cannot be stored like any other simple wine bottle. For that reason, the French fashion house Louis Vuitton has designed a special wine case, to carry your bottle along with a pair of Riedel wine glasses. This is certainly the best and most elegant way to take your treasures with you, wherever you may go.

ike a well oiled machine, the HITS Desert Circuit in Thermal, California proved that the 2012 winter show season will be one to remember. Olympic hopefuls set their sights on London, World Cup riders earned pivotal qualifiers for the FEI World Cup and Pfizer Million dreams became reality all in the heart of the Southern California desert. At its peak, HITS Thermal sold out at close to 3,000 horses this winter and boasted an eclectic mix of talented riders from around the country, Canada, Mexico, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Brazil and beyond. Sixteen Grand Prix, six Devoucoux Hunter Prix and every level in between attracted riders from around the world, all striving to leave their mark on North American show jumping. “This season in Thermal was an encouraging reminder of where the sport is headed on the West Coast,” said HITS President & CEO Tom Struzzieri. “We will do everything we can to continue to deliver a world-class product in Thermal and I am confident that the Desert Circuit will continue to grow in size and success in the coming years.”

Rising to the top of Thermal success stories was Canadian Chris Pratt and Indigo Farms, LLC’s Cruise. During the final week of competition in the desert, the pair arrived with their game face on, sweeping both Grand Prix classes. Most notable, however, came on the final day of the six-week circuit when Pratt and Cruise won the biggest purse of the season—the $200,000 Lamborghini Grand Prix, presented by Lamborghini Newport Beach. The class was an exclamation point to a circuit for the record books. Individual accolades were many, but it was Hap Hansen who drew the most attention during this winter’s circuit. No stranger to the Grand Prix ring, Hansen collected his 99th Grand Prix victory when he rode Linda Smith’s “Archie Bunker” to the blue ribbon in Thermal’s $30,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented Top left: Kate Considine and “Caretano.” Top right: Jill Henselwood accepts the 2012 Platinum Performance Overall Leading Grand Prix Rider Award.

by Pfizer Animal Health. Also accepting personal recognition was 2008 Canadian Silver Medalist, Jill Henselwood. She used her time in Thermal wisely—as preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. After 10 ribbons and $53,230 in prize money, Henselwood was named this year’s Platinum Performance Leading Grand Prix Rider. During the 2012 winter circuit, well over $1 million in prize money was awarded, making West Coast show jumping a force to be reckoned with. From the moment the first horse was unloaded at the all-new Thermal, California show grounds in 2007, the HITS Desert Circuit has been gaining swift momentum. As the sun sets on the 2012 season, Thermal has asserted itself as the crown jewel of HITS Horse Shows, kicking each season off with a bang and pointing to a future that continues to get brighter and brighter.

Eagle Speedster

A mAgnificent celebrAtion of the 50th Anniversary of the Jaguar E-Type, the Eagle Speedster is the embodiment of a car aficionado’s wildest dream. American Collector Rick Velaj, who wanted something “a bit special,” commissioned the car. Passion for the E-Type is what led to developing a model that throws back to the design of Jaguar’s Lightweight E-Type racecars built in 1963, but with a modern twist and a more powerful engine. Despite the familiar outline, the Speedster’s 100 percent bespoke. Its all-aluminum body panels have been gently remolded from original tinware by Nuneaton-based RS Panels. In order to enhance the sleekness of the overall shape and create a driving cocoon, the custom-built windscreen was lowered and raked back with shaped wind-down side glass and hidden ‘A’ posts. The deeper sills and lowered floor pan drops the driver’s seating position while effortlessly increasing the more muscular appearance of the all-aluminum body-shell. Under the beautifully sculpted body, Eagle engineers mounted an in-house developed 4.7-liter straight-six engine, matched to a five-speed gearbox. The six-cylinder produces 340 lb-ft (460

Nm) of torque and is expected to offers sports car performance numbers to Speedster, which tips the scales at just 2,425 lbs. Fitting an optimized sports suspension and widening the wheel track also improved the Eagle’s handling. The car’s elegant lines connect with the cockpit through a “waterfall” console that descends bet-

ween the two seats and continues with the center tunnel. The dashboard is pure E-Type, with an aluminum fascia, classic instrument panel and wraparound leather upholstery. The custom-designed aluminum wheels fitted with three-eared wheel spinners are another example of Eagle’s attention to detail. eaglegb.com

Journal of... spiriTs

“Time is more imporTanT Than money, you cannoT sell Time: we sell waTches, buT noT Time.”

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE THE IMPULSE THAT DRIVES ULYSSE NARDIN? I think what sets Ulysse Nardin apart is primarily innovation, and it has a long and rich history that continues even today. There is no other company nowadays that has as many pending and registered patents as we do.

IN PARTICULAR, WHAT IS THE PASSION THAT IMPULSES PATRIK HOFFMANN IN THE WORLD OF HAUTE HORLOGERIE? What drives me is passion for the product and for people. We love to make items that are not just time tellers: our watches combine craftsmanship and technique, packaged in a mechanism. They are like a fine painting, that is, a work of art.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT VALUES OF ULYSSE NARDIN?

CEO of Ulysse Nardin

After the sudden death of Rolf Schnyder last April, Patrik P. Hoffmann, the former vice president of worldwide sales and marketing of Ulysse Nardin, took over the reins as the new CEO. Hoffmann now must protect the legacy of a prestigious company that prides itself on innovation and independence.

WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE? I think Rolf Schnyder bestowed Ulysse Nardin with a philosophy of life. Although our company is very high-end, he always had his feet on the ground. In particular I do not like self-promotion—our company is based on the product. I am not a CEO who wants to stand out. I’m not one of those conceited senior executives who likes to drive a luxury car. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the good things of life, but not everything has to do with money. Time is more important than money, you cannot sell time: we sell watches, but not time. Every minute spent cannot be retrieved; time is the most precious thing we have. We sell emotions, we can make people feel good, but we cannot give them time. That’s really frustrating (laughs).

HAS THE DEATH OF ROLF SCHNYDER CHANGED THE COURSE OF ULYSSE NARDIN? I think it’s important for us to establish that Ulysse Nardin will remain an independent company. This is something that has not changed, despite the recent change of administration following the death of Rolf Schnyder. We will remain independent and innovative, and there are many new things to come.

Photo: Óscar Carrera.

Patrick P. Hoffmann

Overall I think that today’s haute horlogerie consumers are seeking value for their investment, and that includes the name of the brand. People are looking for true value in watches. We do not care about fleeting fashions, the brand rather thinks about the longterm value of our products. We are thinking about the future, and are currently working on many new products that will see the light in future years.

ith the thunder of highstepping hoofbeats and the rap and rattle of a hind leg just brushing the rail of an impossibly high jump only just a week away, the contrast of the tinkling of silverware, the brush of fine linen against skin and applause was all that was heard at the first ever “What to Wear to that Equestrian Affaire” luncheon sponsored by Land Rover Houston Central and The Houston Polo Club on Wednesday, February 29, at the elegant Wynden. This fashion presentation and luncheon hosted by Masraff ’s featured appropriate wear for enjoying the show in style from Tootsies who provided an amazing collection from their American and European Designer collections. The rustic yet elegant venue and the intimate setting it provided made the event feel relaxed in mood and elegant in style. Modeling the clothes were a group of stunning women who are accomplished riders or who have a strong connection to the charities Pin Oak benefits. These beautiful women with giving hearts showed off the best and most comfortable and fash-

ionable wear for going to the Sponsor’s Club, The Championship Gala, the $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, The Haras Dos Cavaleiros Working Equitation, The YPOC Polo Mixer, the Grand Prix Garden Party and for just watching the show. This unique fashion presentation left no fashion question unanswered when it comes to dressing for an equestrian affaire while raising additional monies for the charities of Pin Oak—Texas Children’s Hospital, Houston’s Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms, and Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Family Alliance. A tremendous success and a whole lot of fun, look for this event to happen next year. Pin Oak always looks for new ways to celebrate the show, equestrian sports, and to do more for their charities. Pin Oak Charity Horse Show extends its thanks to Cindy Gracely and Cynergy Works, Staging Solutions, Terrazas de los Andes, ImageSet, and Nothing Bundt Cakes for their support. Raising nearly $10,000, this event’s funds will be added to the 2012 donation to our charities, making this event a stylish way for Pin Oak Charity Horse Show to continue its 67-year Texas tradition of helping.

From the runway to the show ring, Pin Oak Charity Horse Show 2012 was bigger and better than ever. Featuring world-class competition, including Hunters and Jumpers, American Saddlebreds, Andalusians, Lusitanos, Hackneys, United Mountain Horses and Welsh Ponies and prize money exceeding $100,000, the show kicked off on Wednesday, March 21. Week 1 culminated with Breed Championships and a Ringside Gala on Saturday, March 24. The Grand Prix Garden Party was a blast on Sunday, March 25. Week II had Hunter and Jumper competition in all rings. A fan favorite and show highlight Week II was the $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby presented by Valobra Jewelry and Antiques. Not to be missed was the “Mad Hatter” championships and elegant ringside party for this event. Ten lucky ladies wearing fabulous hats walked the Pin Oak Red Carpet during course change. Also slated for Week II was the $10,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby and all the thrills of the Grand Prix—twice! Over the two weeks of the show, Pin Oak 2012 boasted four Grand Prix events between March 21 and April 1 when the show closed. Pin Oak Charity Horse Show is clearly more than a horse show, it is an event—not to be missed.

Smiling faces abound with competitors, owners, trainers and spectators. From celebrating great sport to celebrating a win, the winter equestrian circuits offer plenty of reasons to rejoice. Laws of style

1. GUYS SHOULD keep flip-flops strictly for the beach. Espadrilles, boat shoes, white Chuck Taylors, or light Gucci loafers, will give you a laidback look without giving up on style.

2. THE SAME GOES for all women—wear flip-flops only if you must when going to the beach but otherwise stick to wedges, preferably with gold straps like Manolo Blahnik.

3. A LIGHT COLORFUL canvas watchstrap provides a dash of soft spring air to your timepiece and beach look. a big bag where you can stuff kinds of accessories for that sailboat trip.

BE DARING AND WEAR SOME COLORFUL CAPRI JEANS FROM JBRAND, OR ACNE CHINOS FOR MEN.

6. WE SHOULDN’T even need to mention that a pair of feather-weight, white jeans are as essential to a wardrobe as great sunglasses. Even beyond the Italian Mediterranean.

4. DON’T FORGET

No need to wear a backdrop fit for Sponge Bob Square Pants when hitting the beach. Large surfer trunks aren’t for surfers anymore—do yourself, and your shape, a favor and get hold of a pair of Orlebar Brown beach or board shorts. This season wear a shorter more tailored look. And we think women should leave behind those one-piece swimsuits and wear Orly bikinis.
