Take some fashion risks and adapt trends. We can get you started... Fun is synonymous with summer, and we all agree that travelling is a sure way to enjoy the sun. Epic Efforts BEyond thE Grand prix An excellent horseman reaches out beyond the equine. By Jackie McFarland

op west coast Grand prix rider Chris Pratt and his wife Jen own Epic Stables. With goals higher than horse show ribbons, they are persistent on their quest to do what is best for horses and beyond. A Canadian turned Californian, Pratt discovered Martine Colette’s Wildlife Waystation close to his barn. Impressed and motivated, Pratt is reaching out to equestrians to help animals in need.
What is the Wildlife Waystation? As explained on their web site, the Wildlife Waystation (WW) is a national non-profit, holding rehabilitation, medical and problem solving refuge for native, wild and exotic animals. Since 1976 wildlife lover and expert Martine Colette has dedicated her time and knowledge to these wayward animals. Located in the Angeles National Forest, north of the San Fernando Valley, the 160-acre facility is fully licensed and is the oldest wild & exotic animal sanctuary in the United States. Over the years the Wildlife Waystation has provided shelter and care to over 75,000 animals. Providing everything from hospital facilities and medicine to nurturing and TLC, the refuge is a 24/7 operation with an annual operating budget of $1.7million.
What kind of animals? The animals come from all over the world and from many different situations—rejected exotic pets, former circus performers, members of animal exhibits, and those orphaned or abandoned by their parents. All creatures large and small, furry and flying are welcome. This includes lions, tigers, bobcats, leopards, jaguars, bears, opossums, foxes, hyenas, reptiles, wolves, deer and all types of birds. Whenever possible animals are returned to their natural habitat. However, WW provides a home for numerous animals that are no longer equipped to be in the wild.
Pratt explains, “My wife Jen and I have been looking for a charity to align with our Epic Stables for several years now. I’ve always thought that an animal-based charity would be fitting simply due to the fact that all people involved with the horse industry have a love and passion for animals. I’d driven past the signs for the Wildlife Waystation and didn’t really know what it was. I called and arranged a meeting with founder Martine Colette and was absolutely blown away with her compassion and devotion for hundreds of troubled animals. Jen and I had a personal tour of the grounds and were both astonished that this highly organized, clean, well-run home to more than 400 exotic animals was only three miles from where we trained our

horses every day! We knew we had found the right charity and decided to focus on bringing awareness to this sanctuary in dire need of support.”

Walk, Talk and ParTy WiTh The animals As a way to raise awareness, and offer an opportunity for friends to see the wildlife wonders, Pratt hosted a private party at the Wildlife Waystation sponsored by Epic Stables. From lions to monkeys, it was a memorable adventure. In Pratt’s words, “My 20 guests arrived for a pretour cocktail and then were split into two groups for a private tour of the sanctuary. All the enclosures are very safe, but unlike a zoo, you can really get up close and personal with the animals. We were advised not to get too close to the enclosure openings where the animals are fed—in case a giant paw came out. We were also forewarned about the chimpanzee water games. It is truly amazing how they work together—one distracting my guests with banging and antics—while another fills his mouth full with water and attempts to squirt it at anyone that gets a little too close! Then they all celebrate and wait for the next unsuspecting group to come by.” A thoroughly wild experience, Pratt speaks highly of the evening. “The tour of all the rescued lions and tigers, monkeys and chimps from closed biomedical research labs, exotic birds, even a giant Kodiak bear once used in the film industry, took about an hour and a half. We then gathered on the back patio of Martine’s house in the center of the sanctuary for cocktails, great food and some unbelievable stories as to how the various animals arrived at the WW. Martine has devoted her live to saving, rehabilitating, and providing care for any type of unwanted animals. She is an amazingly warmhearted person and a fantastic storyteller as well.” Bringing awareness to this most incredible place is more than just knowing it exists and appreciating the efforts. With years of success in his home country of Canada, including clinching a 2005 Nations Cup win for Canada and representing Canada in the 2006 World Equestrian Games, Pratt came to the United States for a chance to work with top rider Richard Spooner which later led to establishing his own Epic Stables in 2008 with wife Jen, as well as assistant and manager Lisa Cahn. Structuring the business to suit various goals, several clients compete at top-rated shows while others prefer to show on a smaller scale, Epic has approximately 25 horses in its stables and five full time grooms to provide the best in care. Their successful vision of creating a business that revolves around the sport of show jumping, and not the industry of horse shows, has been a tremendous success. AN ENDURING RELATIONSHIP BY JACKIE MCFARLAND
hen Rich Fellers and "Flexible" won the 2012 FEI Rolex World Cup Show Jumping Final last April they were the first pair to earn this prestigious honor for the United States in twenty-five years. This same duo was second in the 2008 FEI Rolex World Cup Show Jumping Final, which at the time was the highest placing for an American in two decades. What is even more extraordinary is the incredible will of this little stallion, the relationship these two have developed and how together they are a jumping sensation. Since the young 16h Irish Sporthorse stallion was imported to the States in 2002, purchased and still owned by Harry and Mollie Chapman, Fellers and "Flexible" have earned a name for themselves, placing at the top of numerous grand prix events and international competitions. What are the secrets that keep these two jumping clean and fast? Certainly talent, competitive natures and a dual desire to be in the show ring. Together as a show jumping couple for the last decade, tested by many a difficult jumping track, the rockiest times in the relationship were not in competition but when two serious, potentially career-ending injuries tortured the star stallion.
THE MYSTERY LAMENESS Back in 2004, Fellers was working with "Flexible" at home in Oregon when he showed signs of lameness. He returned to the barn to get another set of eyes to watch in order to pinpoint the problem. Mysteriously the stallion appeared sound after taking a short break. Thinking it was just a minor misstep, Fellers continued training. However in time the issue would reappear
and "Flexible" would again begin limping. The attempts to diagnose with radiographs, ultrasound, MRIs and even trying the test of time as a cure, were to no avail. No matter how much all involved wanted to help, they were helpless without a diagnosis. Fellers decided to have the veterinary experts at Washington State University (WSU) study the case, so he left the dejected horse in their hands. Enough time had passed that "Flexible" not only lost his muscle and fitness, but his personality had lost its pep. Through extensive testing, the veterinarians realized he had a rare blockage in his right leg, causing improper blood flow. Never having seen this condition before, the cure was unclear. The veterinarian team at WSU decided to try a procedure that works in humans with blocked arteries, angioplasty. Simply stated, the result is a larger space for blood flow in the vein created by inserting and then inflating small balloons Although the procedure was successful, the vets warned Fellers that the horse might not be able to jump again. Determined to give full recovery a try, Fellers practiced patience. The process was long and slow, and almost eight years later the veins in the right leg still swell up with work, but clearly the stallion beat the rare condition and miraculously returned to jumping. By the winter of 2006 Flexible was in the show ring and by summer he was winning in the 1.45m at Spruce Meadows.
DOUBLE DISASTER Back in the game, "Flexible" competed at HITS Saugerties in the fall. Post the show, the Fellers’ top horses were resting at a farm in New York before returning home to Oregon. Unfortunate events in a turnout paddock resulted in a serious injury for

"Flexible." This time around the diagnosis was not a mystery but definitely dire. A fractured scapula in his left shoulder which later led to another rare and potentially incurable issue called “Sweeney Shoulder”, where the muscles around the shoulder atrophy, meant another long recovery period for "Flexible" with a slim chance to return to his show jumping self. Patience was again the name of this recovery game. And amazingly once again with meticulous care from veterinarians and the Fellers team combined with the will of an athlete who refuses to give up (both Fellers and "Flexible") the little stallion that could came back. After another agonizing year off, the pair returned to the ring in the summer of 2007 better than ever.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH – LET’S GO JUMP Upon his second astounding return to the top ranks, neither "Flexible" nor Fellers has looked back. They just keep jumping better, cleaner and faster. When deciding to compete for a spot in the 2008 World Cup Finals, and then earning it, the amazing relationship between these two males was finally reaching new heights. Placing second in those finals put a spotlight on this team from Oregon and they continue to earn recognition year after year, and 2012 is no exception. When asked for his favorite moment of the 2012 FEI World Cup Show Jumping Final, Fellers said, “Looking up at the timer when I crossed the finish line in the jump-off and hearing the crowd, that was a new level of excitement in my life. The most exciting win I’ve had without a doubt.” He continued to tell the story of how the final moments unfolded. “The day before I was sitting in my hotel room and it hit me that I was going to end up jumping off with Steve Guerdat. I purposely walked the jump-off because I had this feeling. After watching Steve there was no question in my mind that I was going to do it. I knew I

was going to go all out. 'Flexible' is so competitive—he understands this sport. He knew what he was doing. I’ve watched the video, there is literally one stride of difference between our two rides and taking one less stride in the turn to the triple bar is what won. The way it played out, it was really fun to ride. We all watch sports and there’s exciting competitions and there’s super-fantastic competitions— and this just measured up to be one of those.”
TRYING AND TOUCHING Clearly athletic, to win at this level a horse also has to be a tryer. He has to want to answer the questions asked and not touch the jumps. That is "Flexible." “I think my favorite part is his enthusiasm in the ring. He is SUCH a ring horse. He loves jump-offs. I don’t even warm him up for the jump-off, I just keep him flexible on the flat. I played a lot of sports when I was young—I know that feeling, being ready to go, not needing to be warmed up, you are ready.” So do a horse and rider make it through the above trials and tribulations, have this much success without some element of a special bond? When asked to define the relationship, Fellers admitted it was hard to describe. “I have tremendous respect for him. He’s my hero. I love him of course—I have a lot of love and respect for him. My daughter reminded me in Wellington to make sure 'Flexible' knew I loved him. That stuck with me—and I did it. I’m not a kisser. I talk to him, I hug him, and I pet him a lot. I hug and scratch him on the head.” At press time, Rich posted yet another win, the $100,000 Del Mar National Grand Prix, an Olympic Observation Event, illustrating continued consistency with his powerful and persevering partner this past May. Although the Olympic Team won’t be named until later this summer, after a solid performance in the Olympic Trials in Wellington and winning in Del Mar, Fellers and Flexible are looking like serious contenders. From the 2012 Summer Olympics to the 2013 FEI World Cup Final and wherever else their path may take them, kudos to this tremendous team who certainly know each other’s secrets.

he first result of this research was the birth of the Opera Contemporary brand two years ago. This brand quickly received a rousing response from the international market. The Young & the Talented Part Two
W
hen I started on this adventure of discovering young talent, I had no idea what an interesting journey it would be. First I do believe that the United States is in for an exciting show jumping future, as between the teenagers from last issue and the twentysomethings in this one we have a tremendous group of motivated, successful, focused equestrians that all have Olympic aspirations, or at least aspirations of being the best they can be. And the best with this collective group of twelve, six last issue and six this one, is simply exceptional. I may continue this series, as there are several names that come to mind who aren’t included and could be. Charlie Jayne, Jessica Springsteen, Ashlee Bond, Nick Dello Joio, Hannah Selleck, Quentin Judge—I would like to connect with each of those aspiring stars.
I found interesting the similarities and the differences amongst the two groups—from choices in higher education, and how that’s defined, to equestrian goals to opinions on what is available for young riders. As we approach the choosing of our 2012 Olympic Team, it appears we may have some young blood in the top six, if not in the top four. Plus several riders that have chosen to compete over those difficult 1.6m Olympic trial tracks to gain some solid miles. And they have performed quite well. An overlying truth seems to linger in the words coming from the mouths of young talent—from learning horsemanship to a more structured and affordable pipeline for developing riders, the Untied States needs to focus on building solid horsemen and women from the ground up. This is underway and I will try to keep my eye on the evolvement. Meet the talented twenty-somethings:

Age first time on a horse: I started competing in the short stirrup division when I was 5. Age first time competing in the jumper ring: I started doing the pony jumpers at age 9 on my pony ‘Fire.’ Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: I have been so fortunate to be surrounded by the best in the sport my whole life, so it never crossed my mind not to go all the way to the top. Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: 16 when I competed in my first small grand prix in Lexington, VA. My first real grand prix was a Thursday WEF in Wellington in 2010. Accomplishments include: 2010: Winning my first Grand Prix at Old Salem Farm (thank you My Boy and Andre Dignelli). 2010: Individual silver medalist at North American Young Riders Championships. 2011: Winning the CSI** Grand Prix of Chantilly in France. Equestrian goals: I hope to represent the USA at all the major championships (WEG, Olympics, World Cup Finals, Top League Nations Cups, etc.) and successfully manage my own stable some day. Education: I will be a sophomore at the University of Miami. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent?

In my opinion, it’s not the responsibility of the sport to develop young talent—that ‘drive’ for success has to come from within the rider. If you want to be the best, you have work hard and fight for your dream. If you do that, then yes, the sport supports the development of young talent. Artisan Farms graciously sponsors the young rider division during WEF that gives young riders a steppingstone from junior/amateur divisions to grand prix level. We also have NAYRC and Prix de States that expose young riders to the nations cup format. The USET offers grants and organizes the European Young Rider Tour to help give young riders international experience. All of these options prepare young riders to advance to the top level of the sport. If you could ride any horse: I am really thankful for the horses I have. Each one of them has taught me something invaluable and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. That being said, I also wouldn’t turn down an opportunity to ride Edwina Alexander’s Cevo Itot du Chateau—he’s small, ‘typie,’ and I think we would be a good match, Kutscher’s Cornet Obolensky—he is gorgeous and makes every 5* round look as smooth as the USET Finals, or Staut’s Silva-

I was still riding ponies, so imagine how small I looked! Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: I think I always wanted to be a Grand Prix rider. I really committed to riding at that level once I started competing regularly in it.
na—she jumps the top level so effortlessly and looks like a pleasure to ride. Favorite Horse Show: This is a tough one. It’s a tie between Hickstead and the Kentucky Horse Park. I love Hickstead for the history, prestige, and atmosphere. Kentucky is so horse-friendly and I love taking long walks around the cross-country field (preferably bareback). Name your three top role models: McLain Ward, for his precision in every aspect of his riding. Margie Engle, for her size (I’m short too) and her perseverance. My mom, I hope if I have children someday I can be as supportive of them as she has been of me.
Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: I was 15 at the Garden State Horse Show. Accomplishments include: 2005: Being the first and only person to win all 4 equitation finals. 2008: Winning the Falsterbo Nations Cup on behalf of the US. 2010: Winning the World Cup Qualifier at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, Canada. Equestrian goals: My main goal is to continually improve my riding and hone my skills. I try to work on my weaknesses. In terms of a more concrete goal, I hope to represent the United States on more occasions at the International level and Nations Cups. Winning a major grand prix is definitely a goal I have set for myself. Education: I graduated from Brown University at the end of May. I am looking forward to dedicating all my time to riding for a while to see where that takes me. My degree is in Literature and Cultures of English. I have not ruled out graduate school, just not yet. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? I believe, and many people I speak to do as well, that the American system of equitation is the foremost base in the world. However, there is an obvious lack in the numbers of riders that emerge from the
system. This says to me that there must be something wrong with the continuation of the young rider’s conditioning. I do not have a solution for the flaw nor can I pinpoint exactly what it is. Perhaps it has to do with the end all be all attitude of the equitation ring. In George Morris’s words, “equitation is a stepping stone” and we have to get back to treating it as such. If you could ride any horse: My horse, Onira. We had all our “first times” together; I won my first equitation final on him, jumped my first high junior jumper class, my first grand prix, and my first World Cup Final. He has given me more than any horse has, or probably will ever again. Not only is he incredible to ride, but he is as much a competitor as any person I know. He is also the most fun horse to work and travel with because he is a really cool customer. Favorite Horse Show: I love competing at the Washington International Horse Show. The atmosphere during the Grand Prix is always electrifying and being from NYC, I love being in the city. Name your three top role models: My parents, Peggy Meertins, the high school assistant at Profession Children’s School in NYC and Bobby Flay (Chef).

Age first time on a horse: First sat on a horse at age 2. Competing in leadline and short stirrup by age 6. Age first time competing in the jumper ring: I was 12. I sat on a children’s jumper and really liked it. My dad was so excited when I wasn’t showing hunters anymore! Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: I think I knew from early on to be honest. I wasn’t allowed to take lessons until age 5 —so when I turned 5 I said ok its time. Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: It would’ve been summer 2008—I went to Europe that summer. I was 17. Accomplishments include: 2008: Spent the summer in Europe with Neil Jones. Won a class and it was a big deal, podium, ceremony etc. 2008: Competed in the Prix de States and we ended up with a Team Silver Medal, style of riding awards and I was an Individual silver Medalist. 2009: I started working with Kent Farrington and began to step up into the pro ranks. Equestrian goals:. Everyone has to work hard to achieve his or her goals. I’m doing exactly what I want to do—I am developing all the tools and the knowledge to take a horse to the ring, from driving a rig, to barn chores, to taking care of an FEI horse. I spent the winter in Florida, spring in Ken-

tucky and the summer in Spruce Meadows and this year Europe. I was lucky enough to purchase my own grand prix horse last year, I insist on doing all the work. Sure I want to ride on a team and compete at the highest levels but for me becoming a consummate horseman is my priority. Education: I attended Columbia for two years. In June of 2011 I took a year off to work for Kent. With two years to go, in theory I’m going back to Columbia. But my parents wouldn’t be opposed if I chose a school that is easier for this side of my life, which may end up being the plan. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? It really doesn’t to be honest. There is not a lot of opportunity to ride in a Yong Rider system—except for at WEF, but that’s one season, one location and it isn’t sponsored. I chose to work with Kent because he is smart about the business and sponsorship side as well as the riding side of the sport. Trainers don’t give young riders or assistants’ horses to ride—financially it doesn’t make sense. Even for me I own two horses with Kent—I earn my training and grooming but have to cover my show expenses— and I’m competing against 80 professionals. So where is the support to help a young rider come along?

Equestrian goals:. Since I started riding my #1 goal is to go to the Olympics and Aachen. Education: I went to SMU in Dallas, Texas for two and a half years. That’s when I decided I really wanted to focus on riding. I can always go back to school, but for now I want to do what I am passionate about. If you could ride any horse: I would probably have to say Hickstead. He looked like a ton of fun to ride, and seemed like he loved his job.

If you could ride any horse: Oh boy. Wow. That is a really good one. Kent’s little gray horse Uceko is one of the best horse’s I’ve ever sat on. He’s all of 15.1h and he’s such a powerhouse. He is so scopey with such a big stride yet he can turn back and do things bigger horses can’t do. Favorite Horse Show: I would have to say—this is going to sound funny because they are the longest, hardest hours—Wellington (WEF) and Spruce Meadows. Name your three top role models: My mom is an amazing person. She has been a big influence on me. My stepfather is also great… And Kent, of course. He’s opened so many doors; I learn something new every day working with a great team.
Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? The USEF is working quite a bit with the development of young riders. The European Young Riders Team they put together did well last year. We need to have more opportunities like this. In my opinion you can have all of the talent in the world but in order to be great you have to be self-motivated. In this sport, many aspiring riders have to buy young horses because they cannot afford a made grand prix horse. The experience is invaluable, seems that those are the real horsemen and women. However, the system doesn’t encourage this process— showing is expensive and most of the shows don’t offer much prize money in the young horse classes. It isn’t until the horses are ready to do the grand prix classes that the horse and rider have a chance to gain recognition. And somehow, we as a country have forgotten basic horsemanship. I have met may young riders who can jump around a bug course but don’t know how to wrap their horse’s legs or even put a bridle on, and to me that’s where it all starts.
Favorite Horse Show: My favorite horse show though I have never competed there is Aachen. There is so much excitement with the crowd. People from everywhere go to watch and the stands are packed. My favorite show that I have competed at is Sacramento International. It is an extremely well-run show with good money and many opportunities for young horses to move up. Name your three top role models: Joie Gatlin, Laura Kraut, Beezie Madden.

I’ve taken it year by year—I was having fun and didn’t think about it much beyond that. When I started winning in the highs I thought maybe… Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: At HITS Desert Circuit when I was 18. Accomplishments include: 2008: Getting into Stanford. 2009: Third in the Del Mar National Grand Prix in a jump-off against Richard Spooner (to this day I don’t know how I

I remember thinking—I want to do that! Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: I think I was 17 in Spain on The Sunshine Tour with my horse Only One. I rode with the Pessoas that summer. That time in Europe was invaluable. Accomplishments include: I think waking up every day and getting to do what I love is an achievement! But… 2001: Invited to go to Linz, Austria and competed on the Nations Cup Team with Only One. 2011: Chello, the horse I’ve brought along from a youngster, won his first Grand Prix at Showpark. 2012: HITS Desert Circuit, showed five grand prix

Jumping 1.5m & 1.6m classes at WEF and this summer in Europe—my biggest goal is to be consistent with solid results. Overall goals it to compete in Nations Cups at any level—some of the best experience you can possibly ask for. In 2013 I’m aiming for the World Cup and in 2014 the WEG trials. Education: Art History major at Stanford— I’m not sure about graduate school. I’m not a great planner—but I will likely take a couple of years off to ride and experience life and then decide. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? I think to a certain point it does. It’s hard to break into the top, the depth is difficult to attain. There are a lot of top riders training the younger riders— McLain Ward, Eric Lamaze, Laura Kraut and Meredith & Marcus Beerbaum—to work with someone who has been or is at the top is a huge step in the right direction. In the US you do hit a glass ceiling a bit—from age 18-20 you are super excited to compete in the big classes but a few years later you need more goals, options to ride on teams, more rungs on the ladder. WEF of-
classes over three weeks, won three and was 10th & 11th in the other two, that was rewarding. We have ‘arrived’ and continue to evolve. Equestrian goals: To go to the Olympics and take it as far as I can. As humans we try to control so much but of course we can’t. Would love to live that life ‘on top’—Rolex ads, ranked #1. I’m committed to the sport and we’ll see what that brings. Education: The College of Horses—I took some classes at UCSD but didn’t finish. The horses teach me things every day. What could be better? If you could ride any horse: Hickstead, what a great horse. And of course my horse Chello. But I get to ride him every day. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? I think it does support it – there could be a better pipeline—like it used to be a group would go to Gladstone and ride as a team. The kids today need a solid and proper foundation—a structured system that teaches them right from the beginning. Horsemanship is a big part of riding and it is missing in a lot of programs today. That needs to change.
fers a lot of levels—the Artisan Young Rider Series is a great option, the 1.5m classes, to the Thurs WEF classes, to the Sat night classes. But it isn’t maintained throughout the year. We need another step between Young Riders and the top that is available beyond WEF. If you could ride any horse: That’s difficult. I’m sop happy and feel quite fortunate to have ridden Chalan, who took me to my first 1.6m, and now Springtime—I couldn’t ask for anything better. I really respect the relationship between horse and rider, so I love watching incredible pairs—Beezie & Authentic. McLain & Sapphire, Meredith Michaels Beerbaum & Shutterfly—it’s the match, the pair—that’s what makes the horse special. Favorite Horse Show: Del Mar National. I grew up with this as my favorite show and luckily I usually have great results. It’s a special event with a great crowd—the atmosphere is very exciting. European shows are incredible—I’ve been to some beautiful and amazing places. Name your three top role models: Jody Maxmin, Art History professor, I love her passion for her subject. My trainers Meredith & Markus—she will sit and discuss not just the course but how to handle the mental pressure. Markus is at every show, walks every course, rides every horse. We are so prepared when he sends us into the ring. Their work ethic is impressive.
Favorite Horse Show: Showpark because I live around the corner, I can hear the announcer from my house, and it’s a block from the beach. Aachen and Geneva were both beautiful shows—there’s no comparing with those shows. They are unique. Name your three top role models: Beezie Madden—Rodrigo Pessoa—my husband, Justin—he built his own car from scratch and it runs—1929 Model A Coupe. Isn’t that cool?

Even though Anne-Sophie Pic comes from a family dedicated to centuries of haute cuisine, she tried to follow a different path. She traveled to the United States to study business management, but fate wanted something else for her. After a series of unfortunate events upon returning to her home in Valence, she ended up running the family establishment. But the closer she got to the kitchen, the more she wanted to be in front of a stove, not behind the counter. That’s how, encouraged by her husband, she began her apprenticeship.
Pic is the only female French chef that has been awarded the highest gastronomic distinction in France, the Michelin Guide 3 stars. The third generation in her family to obtain this recognition, the honor places the restaurant of La Maison Pic among the best in the country.

It seems as if everything on Pic’s menu is a reflection of her personality. Self-assured and always smiling, she knows that no matter who you serve, you have to do it in a humble way. “It wasn’t easy getting here”, says Pic. “Everyday I learn something meaningful. Every minute I’m learning, gaining a little more experience and getting more passionate about what I do”. With words like that, it’s no surprise why this French chef is both well received and well recognized.

SoCal Spring is Weall-Seasoned With hot competition and cool parties, Blenheim EquiSports hosted a sweet spring show season. At both the San Juan Capistrano and Del Mar locations, the months of April and May were filled with excitement for the competitor and the spectator alike. Show Jumping highlights included an international array of winners—local favorites Rusty Stewart and Michelle Parker, Columbian John Perez and 2012 FEI World Cup Finals Champion Rich Fellers. The one-of-akind social events allowed guests to experience an extravagant ride from the exotic Orient Express, where partygoers dined on flavors from around the world, to a private showing of the World Class Haras Dos Cavaleiros Lusitano horses at the Cirque Du Magique Party. Olympic Observation Events Observation is well underway, with two of the four upcoming events featured below. Rich Fellers and his jumping partner Flexible dominated the Del Mar National. After a disappointing Olympic Trials, Lauren Hough and Blue Angel performed well in California. Young Lucy Davis and Saer Coulter both rode with style over the tough tracks. On the other coast, the Kentucky weather was a bit wet but the fantastic footing in the Rolex Stadium held up and the show jumping was super. Reed Kessler was once again consistently accurate with no major errors on either mount. Margie Engle and Indigo jumped well, won on Thursday but had a few rails on Sunday. Others worth watching included Beezie Madden, Charlie Jayne, Laura Kraut, Mario Deslauriers and Kent Farrington. Observation events at Devon and Spruce Meadows remain before the Olympic Selection Committee and Chef D’Equipe George Morris will select the top six.
