Editor’s note S

Seems like just yesterday we were all singing carols, and unwrapping presents. Now we are preparing for spring. Where does the time go? Speaking of time we have some fabulous features on watchmakers, including Patek Philippe and Hurlot’s Jean Claude Biver, plus our not-to-be-missed wrist wear in “Hours”. Even with our fast-paced lifestyles, we must always look fantastic. From head to toe we offer fashion for every wardrobe. We know comfort shouldn’t be overlooked so we present a lovely selection of loafers to keep you light on your feet but looking superb. And guys, there is truly nothing better than a pair of John Lobb’s. Every man deserves that level of distinction. With Valentine’s Day on our mind this time of year, we picked five romantic getaways, plus a fine selection of boutique hotels in Mexico. But you can celebrate with your favorite valentine anytime. Even a simple toast with a superior wine, we included a great selection inside, a clink of a champagne glass, Veuve Cliquot will do, or shake and stir a cocktail with a Tumi mixology set. Combining safety and luxury in an SUV is well within reach; we offer a few favorite picks. For the equestrian set, meet more of the young and talented stars of the show jumping world and discover the Wonder of Wellington, where the equestrian elite meets. We included some of Palm Beach’s best spas and such, for those who decide Wellington and the Palm Beaches are a must. We hope you enjoy the pages within and as always we thank you.

Begin the transition

SPRING doesn’t officially start until the end of March, but warm days have been known to occur amidst the snowy and frigid extremes. Though the whims of winter can bemuse even those most confident and dapper, facing this varied weather requires that one doesn’t stray too far from earthy tones and brighter shades of dark colors, like brown and grey. Begin the retreat from the fur, winter wool and turtlenecks that protected you from the elements, and embrace a lighter layering of your ensemble during this period of transition. Substitute the heavy coats with light denim, suede, leather or sports jackets.

Upcoming trends THE EARLY MONTHS of year can be chilly. You can’t ignore your winter wardrobe during inclement days, but let’s add some wearable ideas from the dreams the designers have spun for the upcoming spring season. You will definitely need white pieces and fresh maxi dresses. The floral print is back again and with it you will also see influences from India, the Middle East and Russia. French 1946 TRAVEL IN STYLE

2013’s

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS of planning a memorable and incredible trip is choosing the proper luggage. We’re not talking just about that fabulous dress you wear to a gala dinner, or the right athletic shoes for walking in stylish comfort through the streets of your chosen destination. We mean the luggage itself, not its contents. Traveling with a good set of luggage is synonymous with class, luxury and good taste. Imagine arriving at the airport’s premier hall, or the Heathrow Centurion lounge, with pieces in an endless mix of colors and sizes - simply unacceptable. One of the most common faux pas, many people make this mistake at least once. To spare you from this most embarrassing situation, we have found the perfect luggage set for any occasion. Whether your destination is the Caribbean or the European capitals, The Kalahari Collection, by the prestigious brand French 1946, plays an important role for world jet setting travels.

For over half a century, the elegant French 1946 line, with exquisite design and attention to detail, has been a favorite of international renowned celebrities such as Henry Kissinger and the legendary late Elizabeth Taylor amongst others. The strong relationship between French 1946 and icons of the fashion industry have enhanced the reputation of the brand, contributing to its legacy. In 1969, Stanley Marcus, Neiman Marcus co-founder, stated in a letter to the CEO of French 1946, “Few creators are concerned about the durability and quality, but knowing you and the great tradition behind you, I’m sure you will always take the time to make the best products. We are honored to have you here in our stores.” You can find this prestigious brand, once part of the magnificent Louis Vuitton Empire, in upscale department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman. neimanmarcus.com

Talaris Saddle

TALARIS IS THE LATIN WORD FOR WINGED SANDALSsuch as those worn by the Greek God Hermès. These shoes symbolize dynamic, creative and poetic muse of the winged messenger. Such is the inspiration for the saddle with the same name. The perfect saddle unites opposing demands: light yet resilient, strong yet supple, technically correct yet comfortable. Those who succeed in mastering this paradox hold the key to a riddle, one which has proven not only difficult to solve, but must be answered for each individual horse and rider combination. Laurent Goblet, a master Hermès saddler profoundly familiar with the role of the saddletree always striving to perfect his art, had a vision of a tree with which every element could be adjusted and easily altered. His knowledge and passion led him to reinvent his craft and to rethink the very concept of the saddle. The saddle would evolve, depending on the rider’s morphology, his riding style and on each horse. Every modification, whether required because of a decision to change, or personalize in response to a new riding style, or because parts had become worn, could be carried out quickly. Thus Talaris was born, a modular show-jumping saddle, a pioneer in its field.

The adaptable Talaris can be stripped down as easily as it can be built up. It was the realization of an intrepid idea and an ambitious dream. In order to design this revolutionary saddle, Laurent Goblet threw off the constraints of using the classic tree. Having stroked many horses’ backs, as well as watched countless horse and rider combinations and, of course, having created a myriad of saddles in the Hermès workshops he knew that this basic tree, traditionally concealed, may not represent the most flexible framework. This framework, the protective and essential aspect that joins man and beast, is usually made of wood and steel and is obstinately rigid – hampering any significant developments. The exclusive Hermès tree, unveiled at the Saut Hermès international in 2010, is a testament to technological prowess if ever there was one. Still clad by hand in leather chosen with passionate attention to detail, any seams on the seat, usually the first victims of wear have been eliminated. All that remains is one seam around the edge, stitched in orange thread. As you can see, the Talaris saddle has nothing to hide, and shares the secret of its elegance. hermes.com

DREAMERS WELCOME uTHE STORY OF EL SUEÑO DE AMISTAD began with a seventeen- After managing ponies and horses for discerning clients to developing, planning for and traveling with a string of grand prix horses in Europe, Richard gained a tremendous and distinct knowledge of the business. El Sueño de Amistad is based at Hummingbird Nest Ranch, just 30 minutes from Beverly Hills. Daring to be dreamers, they plan to develop individualized, distinctive programs for clients. With the ranch providing a beautiful backdrop, partners Stefanie and Richard already hosted a creative clinic with trainer Eddie Macken, keynote speaker Olympic veterinarian Geoff Vernon and world-renowned course designer Leopold Palacios. Unlike most clinics, El Sueño made it special not only with the aforementioned esteemed panel but also a Saturday evening charity event. This is the first of many unique and intimate events. While the El Sueño team still dreams, they are pleased to see the vision of opening their own business become a reality. Richard and Stefanie are happy to welcome other dreamers into their tight knit family. esda.us Photo: courtesy of Tass Jones Photography.

year-old girl’s dream to be a professional rider and trainer. Growing up, Stefanie Saperstein was blessed with the support of a family steeped in show jumping. For fifteen years the aspiring equestrian focused on competing and training. Her family purchased and developed Hummingbird Nest Ranch on 120-acres in Santa Susana, CA. Garnering victories in the US and abroad, as a fourteen year old Stefanie won a Junior/Amateur Final at Valkanswaard in Holland and at age eighteen she won the Del Mar Fall Festival Grand Prix. Over the years she worked with many top names, in her hometown as well as in Europe. Studying abroad, the student managed to compete and continued to earn prizes at top European shows from Germany to Spain. Five years ago she met with her partner, Richard Padilla, and her trainer, legendary rider Eddie Macken, and laid out the framework for achieving the equestrian dream. While Stefanie was clearly focused on her educational and equestrian pursuits, her family left the equestrian business. Where many may have given up, she persevered. In 2012, Stefanie turned professional and with her partner opened the doors to El Sueño– the dream. Stefanie’s partner, Richard Padilla, is an integral part of the partnership. He played an important role in Stefanie’s development as a rider and a person as well as managed her horses for the last fourteen years. From his east coast beginnings with George Morris’ Hunterdon Farms and the Gumberg family, Padilla’s genuine interest and innate ability with both horses and people began to open doors. Opportunity knocked when contacts he had made, namely Ray Texel and Jimmy Doyle, recommended him for the Operation Managers position with the Saperstein family.

At Season Catering & Events,

Success Means

“Doing What You Love”

S

ometimes it’s simple serendipity that inspires fresh ideas and exquisite new business ventures. Such is the case for Season Catering & Events, a deliciously creative company launched in the spring of 2012 by three talented and spirited businesswomen.

Photos: Season Catering & Events.

“I was taking a gourmet cooking class taught by my friend, chef Alejandra Pitashny,” recalls Dinorah “Dino” Climent, one of the three founding partners at Season. “I had recently become friends with Sandra Uribe-Afshar, whose kids were going to the same school as mine. So I invited Sandra to come to Alejandra’s cooking class, and the three of us became great friends.” It didn’t take long for these intelligent women to realize that the talents each one brought to the table could create the perfect recipe for a new business.

“We were having lunch at Dino’s,” said Sandra, who runs her own public relations firm. “Alejandra was telling us that she wanted to take her gourmet cooking and pastry expertise to the next level. Then Dino started talking about her experience as a restaurateur an how she loves to create the ideal ambiance for dining and parties,” Sandra added. “That’s when I said to them: we should start a catering company, because my specialty is planning events and celebrations.” The group was giddy at the idea of going into business together. They decided that putting on an elaborate baby shower for Sandra, who was expecting her second child, would be the perfect way to test the waters and show others what they can do. “We planned a great menu of appetizers, entrees, plus some of Alejandra’s amazing desserts,” Dino said. “We invited family, friends and associates from Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar and La Jolla. The shower was amazing. Everyone was impressed with the food, the service and the artistry of the presentation. That’s when we were convinced that we could be successful doing fresh, elegant catered events.” Weeks after the baby shower, just by word-of-mouth, Sandra, Alejandra and Dino began receiving requests to cater weddings, bridal showers, and fund raising events for non-profits. So to make the partnership official, they did the paperwork and set up a corporation. Today, Season has a growing list of clients and a calendar with events booked for months in advance. When asked what sets them

apart from other catering companies, the partners had similar replies. “We treat our clients like family.” After sitting down with the three founding partners, it became clear that their success is largely due to the fact that they love what they do. “We are all very nurturing and caring, and clients can sense that in everything we do, from the table linens and floral arrangements to the fresh food and exquisite presentation,” said Alejandra. “I never get tired of bringing joy to people through great food. And I love it when clients show their gratitude with big hugs.” Season has ambitious plans for the future. They’re expanding the staff, including the recent addition of renowned chef, Martin San Roman as an equal partner. Chef Martin’s specialties are classic and modern Mexican cuisine, fine French and Italian, and California cuisine. According to Martin, “we feel blessed to be partners in a fun and creative business that allows us to do what we love and share that joy with others.” Season Catering and Events is a great culinary venture that started with class, and will no doubt be operated in that fashion for years to come. The team plans to build its own food innovation facility for creating and refining new recipes, and start doing business in the affluent O.C. , L.A. and San Francisco markets.

Cartier Tank

BEAUTY INSPIRED BY CLASSIC DESIGN. It not only transforms tradition -- it becomes the tradition. This is the case with Cartier’s iconic design, the Cartier Tank. The magic began in 1904 when Cartier created the “Santos-Dumont”, a wristwatch designed to meet the needs of his friend and aviator Santos-Dumont. He required a timepiece that would track the time of his flights with practicality and style, while not requiring him to pull out a pocket-watch. Post creating the wristwatch above, Cartier spent the early years of the 20th century devoted to design and research. As both a jeweler and watchmaker, Cartier was consumed with the desire to integrate the circle of hours to the bracelet’s silhouette. With its square face and parallel brancards, the Tank’s classic edition defines the rules of esthetics and balance in wristwatches. Form follows function with this elegantly simple and classic wrist wear. Timeless tradition. In 1919 Cartier registered the first editions of the Cartier Tank in the company’s inventory. Wonderful wrists of countless celebrities have worn a version of the Cartier Tank, including Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Marlene Dietrich, Jackie O, Rudolfo Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent, to name a few.

Certainly a collector’s item, adorning the Cartier Tank goes beyond a fashion statement, it is a statement of style. Those who appreciate the history behind the design, the mastery of classic beauty choose to wear this emblematic adornment. Over the years the design has followed trends but it remains, and will always be the timeless and desirable Cartier Tank. cartier.com

John Lobb THE NEW OBJECT OF OUR AFFECTION

THEY ARE PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT piece of any first-class wardrobe. The style and the clothes you pair them with make a statement about you, your lifestyle and your habits. Although they are generally reputed to be a women’s pleasure, (some consider it a vice)—for men it is equally important to select a shoe that speaks to his professional pursuit and also clearly makes the statement. “The clothes - and the shoes - make the man.” You ought to have at least one impressive pair of shoes in your closet. There are several points to consider when choosing the right footwear, from the color, style, materials and other factors such as comfort, quality and cost. John Lobb’s designs are definitely the consummate choice. Unlike “off the rack” shoes that are made in series, each pair of John Lobb is a unique and unparalleled work of art. Made by hand by a small group of specialized craftsmen, who have apprenticed for years to acquire the necessary skills, John Lobb is worthy of recognition. The process of making a pair of Lobbs is meticulous, and involves several appointments. The initial appointment is with the fitter, who will make a careful record of the features of your feet. Not only the width and length measurements, but also all specifics of your foot to insure a perfect custom fit. A shoe by John Lobb is custom designed. It fits you and only you. The fitter’s precise measurements are then given to the lastmaker who carves a solid block of maple, beech or hornbeam into Top: Every year celebrities, politicians and royalty members visit the London store. a three-dimensional mold of your foot. Also on record are notes regarding the client’s lifestyle, personal tastes, and characteristic desired design features. The store will keep this model for the same customer’s future creations—once you become accustomed to this level of luxury and comfort, one pair will not be enough. Next, the wooden model is sent to the pattern cutter, who is responsible for creating the patterns according to the customer’s wishes and the requirements of each model. Due to the high quality of materials selected, the cuts must be made to perfection using a steady hand with surgical precision. The clicker plays a crucial role in the creation of John Lobb shoes. With vast experience in fabrics and models, this craftsman creates the eight different pieces that are used to assemble the top of each shoe. The clicker knows color, weight, flexibility and drape of the various types of leather as well as ensures the durability expected of the shoes, and makes recommendations specific to that end. The shoes are completed by the closer. Responsible for assembling, joining and sewing materials carefully to shape the patterns that make up the top of the shoe, the closer is also charged with ensuring the basic strength, distinction and durability which is the hallmark of John Lobb shoes. The maker carefully and joins the upper part of the shoe with the exclusive Lobb sole. The sole is made from the finest English oak and premier leathers, and is defined by a riveting heel, which ensures the durability of your shoes. Each master knows the exact number of stitches required to join the shoe’s body to the sole. The Socker cuts the thin piece of leather that covers the inner sole of the shoe, and carves the workshop number which serves as the shoes’ warranty. The tree maker then make shoe trees to preserve the original form, and the shoes then pass through the polisher’s hands, so he can give them that glorious immaculate look that distinguishes John Lobb. This long and delicate process ensures each customer a unique and incomparable royalty-worthy piece, in fact some of the royalty themselves are part of the privileged list of the brand’s regular customers. John Lobb is included in the list of the British royal crown official suppliers. So wait no more. Give your steps the confidence, luxury and comfort that a gentleman deserves. Make John Lobb your shoe of distinction.

Lacoste & Campana bros.

LACOSTE has once again collaborated with the acclaimed designers Fernando and Humberto Campana to launch their innovative and exclusive Holiday Collector’s Series for both men and women last November. The Brazilian duo developed a new interpretation of the famous French house’s classic polo shirt by adding a particularly interesting detail of swirling crocodiles. Debuting for this collector’s edition, the arrangement of the iconic crocodile in a spiral shape is a new twist on an old tradition, based on the famous Campana brothers sushi design introduced a decade ago. While researching unique layouts using tapestry, Fernando and Humberto created a technique of over lapping different types of materials including fabrics, rugs, felt, flat and multi- dimensional prints. This technique results in interesting and attractive color “whirlpools”. The design is reminiscent of the traditional Japanese signature cuisine “sushi” - hence the name. The placement of colors and textures of sushi has become the Brazilian fashion house’s signature. The duo has expanded their design idea to a furniture line inclusive of chairs, couches, pillows and puffs for bed linen.

The Holiday Collector’s Series #7 offers different bright color interpretations for both men and for women. The Women’s Special Edition features two colorful crocodile whirlpools positioned strategically below the left shoulder seam and available in a variety of fun colors, while the Men’s edition has a single crocodile whirlpool in black or white also available in a range of colors. Go for The Limited Edition and truly show the Brazilian interpretation of sushi style - the colorful women’s s polo has 12 spirals joined as a necklace on the front side of the polo. The Men’s Edition also goes sushi style with crocodile whirlpools covering the left shoulder and arm. Combine the talented vision of the Campana brothers and the classic style of the French Lacoste Brand and you’ve got wearable art . lacoste.com/campanas

La Grande Dame 1996 effervescent delicacy

style. Created from a blend of eight of Veuve Clicquot’s historic Grand Crus and aged for an extended period in the ancient chalk cellars. “Tightly-packed with notes of citrus oil, orange rind, white peach, honeysuckle, and brioche, the medium to full-bodied 1996 La Grande Dame Brut should age well for 15-20 years. Crisp, fresh, and backward, it is another brilliant example from the exquisite 1996 vintage.” The Wine Advocate La Grande Dame 1996 is a pale gold-green color with brilliant reflections that are typical of the vintage. Effervescence is delicate and extremely steady. On the nose this wine is exceptionally elegant. Dominant floral notes (mint and white flowers) mingle with hints of fresh fruit (citrus fruits, fresh almonds). As it undergoes aeration, riper

notes of vanilla and nougat come to the fore, giving a pleasant roundness to the wine. At this stage a typical Chardonnay characteristic, crisp elegance, clearly prevails over aromatic strength. In the mouth, the Pinot Noir reveals its true personality. Fruity notes (white peaches, grapefruit and bergamot) dominate an energetic attack on the palate, which is prolonged by the structure and roundedness of the wine. The balance, a combination of freshness and vigour, is ideal. With a finish that is extremely persistent and clean, mineral notes add force to this noble wine. You no longer need ice or a refrigerator to keep your Champagne cold. To store this crystal elixir which emulates a pale gold color, French designer Andree Putnam has created an antique-style bottle as a fitting match for la Grand Dame 1996. veuve-clicquot.com

ExcEptional momEnts require a perfect accompaniment. This bubbly golden elixir is the essential complement to upcoming festivities and celebrations. A wine of extreme refinement, a bottle of extraordinary champagne puts that distinguishing touch on the occasion. La Grande Dame 1996 can be compared to the most elaborate lace works from legendary Bruges by the famous house of Veuve de Clicquot. Founded in 1772, Veuve Clicquot is among the most prestigious Champagne Houses. As in Madame Clicquot’s day, bottles age in the House’s vast, vaulted cellars in Reims, portions of which were constructed some 2,000 years ago by the Romans. Born of a tradition of excellence and the weight of time, the prestigious Grande Dame is the ultimate expression of the Veuve Clicquot

In 1839 brothers Antoine Norbet de Patek and François Czapek named their company Patek, Czapek & Cie. Five years later Antoine Norbert de Patek met Jean Adrian Philippe in Paris and together they produced the first watch on a remontoir set on time without a key. A watch that could that could be set and wound via the crown without a separate key was revolutionary. Over the years the manufacturer amassed several successes and added to its ever-growing list of admirers. In 1845, the company produced the first pocket watch for ladies, with a distinct button rose decoration. In 1868, Patek Philippe obtained the patent for an integrated mechanism, built the first women’s wrist watch and sold it to Hungary’s Countess Koscowicz. The history of producing exceptional timepieces continues to this day. The first editions of women’s wrist watch; the first wrist chronograph with split seconds in 1923; the first perpetual calendar wrist watch in 1925, or the creation of a 2006 Spiromax® spiral technology watch. Superior timeless inventions to tell the time. As we know, time waits for no man, hence the success of Patek Philippe. patekphilippe.com

Fulgor Nocturnus

A TIME WILL COME – or possibly it already has - when you will need a writing instrument that defines luxurious and discriminating taste. Whether you are sitting in a board meeting, closing a business deal or adding zeros on a blank document, the pen for you is a Tibaldi. The base of the design on the Fulgor Nocturnus, with123 rubies and 945 black diamonds, was on the Divine Proportion of Phi (proportion between the pen’s cap and the visible portion of the barrel when the pen is closed equals the phi ratio, 1.618). The surface of this pen is flawlessly smooth with comfortable grip thanks to the perfect precious stones incrustation, a unique Tibaldi technique. The color splash of intense rubies contrasting the dark back ground, mixed with the mysterious glitter from the black diamonds, truly reflect the name of this magnificent piece of art: Fulgor Nocturnus. Every ring from this pen is refined with the characteristic manufacture for diamonds known as Clou de Paris, an 18th century ornamental technique for watches. This fountain pen, the first of a collection of one of a kind pens, was sold at a charity auction in Shanghai, for an impressive amount of $8,482,320, setting a new world record for value in a writing instrument. The money from the sale went to help an institution for underprivileged children with heart conditions in poor regions of China. Caution! When experiencing the pleasure of holding this writing instrument, a true piece of art, might cause an increase in heart rate. tibaldi.it

“My favorite watch of all times is my Bigger Bang All Black, because it reminds me of my favorite toy as a child, a steam engine. When purchasing a watch, buy with your eyes, your emotions, your dreams!”

Jean Claude Biver President of Hublot Another well known name in the world of haute horlogerie, in fact one of the most creative and successful man in the industry, Jean Claude Biver, CEO of Hublot, speaks about his famous Bang All Black watch, style and how life should be nothing less than a dream come true. The elegance is a combination of the past and the future. In my opinion, the style should always adapt to your personality and yourself. Sometimes this is difficult, but it must be achieved. These two elements— elegance and style—are related to tradition and innovation. I know who I am and I know what suits me. Knowing that I already know a lot, and I appreciate it, because I never want to be someone other than myself.

The most notable watch for daytime wear is my Bigger Bang All Black. This watch makes the statement that every watch should, but with the modernity and technology. It’s a watch that I can wear for any activity: in the office, on vacation, playing sports or any event during the day. For the evening I adore the Classic Fusion Hublot All Black. It is very discreet but of a strong character, and it is very different from any other night watch.

The Tutti Frutti collection, based on colored stones, is a recent release. It gave me a lot of pleasure and excitement to combine it with the African Wildlife Foundation. This was how Out of Africa was born. We are different from other brands because we do not repeat traditions. We don’t do mergers between tradition and future. In this way we are completely different and unique. We combine tradition and modernity into one.

Being a man… The characteristics that I admire mostly in a man are honesty and simplicity. My motto in life is to try to share, respect and never forget to forgive. If you are capable of sharing yourself respecting your neighbors and the way they think, and rendering forgiveness, then you are very close to love. Love gives you strength and harmony. These are the most important things a man can have.

The LIFEFORCE Range

THE CHALLENGE: Feeding your horse the right balance of nutrition. The breakfast of an elite athlete is clearly different than the older competitor, the broodmare and every type of horse in between. “As most horse owners already know, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to equine nutrition,” said Kevin Tuck, Alltech’s global manager of equine nutrition. “Recognizing the need for specialized nutritional support, Alltech has developed two new supplements, creating the LIFEFORCE Range. The ingredients in these products are customized to different stages of equine activity, ensuring a well-balanced, healthy digestive tract for the sport horse, the leisure horse and the breeding horse.” Recognizing the need to specialize dietary supplements to achieve the desired health goals for horses of every lifestyle, Alltech has developed the LIFEFORCE Range. Based on the original LIFEFORCE Formula™ introduced in 2009, the LIFEFORCE Range targets the specific dietary needs for the highly active sport horse, breeding or moderately active horse, and the retired or senior horse. The LIFEFORCE Range includes: • LIFEFORCE Elite™: provides dietary support to maximize nutrient intake & help manage stress for the highly active sport horse. • The original LIFEFORCE Formula™: boosts overall health for the moderately active performance horse and enhances reproductive performance in both mares and stallions • LIFEFORCE Focus™: maintains the health of the low-maintenance or senior pasture horse.

The LIFEFORCE Range complements a proper equine diet by securing hindgut health, creating a stable digestive environment, promoting nutrient absorption and strengthening the immune system. Backed by more than 32 years of scientific research, the LIFEFORCE Range delivers results including more consistent feed intake, an increase in healthy bacteria in the digestive tract, stabilization of the horse’s natural pH, boosts in antioxidants and improved body and coat condition. The LIFEFORCE Range is available in 5-kg pails and should be administered in 1-ounce portions twice a day. To find a distributor of the LIFEFORCE Range, call 1-800-578-9234. lifeforcehorse.com

NEW LINE OF NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS SERVES SPECIFIC DIETARY NEEDS

“I have been feeding LIFEFORCE to my horses since November 2010. I started by feeding one horse and after seeing the benefits of the supplement I am now feeding five. There has been improvement in all of their coats, weight, and feet… When I saw that LIFEFORCE was a yeast based product I was keen to start using it, knowing that yeast improves digestion of fiber and therefore helps creates a healthy digestive system as well as providing an excellent water soluble source of B vitamins... The biggest changes I have seen have been in the young performance horses. They are focused and calm, their coats gleam, and the farrier cannot believe the growth and health of their feet. Add to all of this the outstanding service, and I am a customer as long as I have horses.” Donna Garner - Owner of Chinook Arch Farm, breeder for over 20 years

A renowned hostess, Merriweather-Post welcomed many elite guests over several decades. In keeping with this tradition established by the original owner, Trump’s guests and members are an elite group of luminaries from around the world. The title of the show is inspired by this multipurpose hybridity, as a bivouac is a lightweight encampment or shelter that can be adapted to its environment just as Bouroullec products are activated by their end-users and the spaces they inhabit. In Bivouac, the MCA galleries contained specially designed pedestals on which the brothers’ smaller-scale works were displayed. This signature approach to interior space creates a rich and immersive environment. The Chicago venue presented among others, Facett and Ploum, two colorful couches that exude comfort and versatility, a signature trait for this award winning collection. Under this same principle, the brothers worked along with Ligne Roset to create collection pieces, with their characteristic traits to be presented at Bivouac. Now thanks to the luxury designer’s line of Ligne Roset and Design Primario all the colors, patterns and textures can color your spaces. When talking about their collaboration with Ligne Roset Ronan Bouroullec explained, “Having our products distributed everywhere means everything to us.

Renovo Bike

GOING GREEN is a trend that thankfully is growing stronger every year. An increasing number of people are leaving their cars at home in favor of a mode of transportation that allows them the convenience of avoiding traffic congestion, a chance to exercise and a way to create less pollution: the bicycle, which is making an amazing comeback in cities and towns worldwide. There are countless styles available to suit any sensibility, and innovative designers from all types of industries, fashion to perfume to automotive manufacturers, are creating two-

wheeled pieces with a contemporary twist to satisfy their eco-friendly customers. Houses like Aston Martin, Chanel, Gucci and many more have gone green with bicycle design. And now we’ve discovered yet another alternative, a new standard-bearer of the green movement – a bicycle built with sustainable wood by Renovo. Wood is a natural shock absorber, absorbing road vibration within the material itself, and these frames can easily exceed the stiffness of a carbon frame, though Renovo customizes the

exact amount of stiffness of every frame based on the rider’s size. In addition, each client is able to choose the specific wood combination for a truly one-of-a-kind ride. The thick-wall hardwood frames, besides being the most beautiful frames on road and trail today, are extremely damage resistant and withstand rain, heat, cold, the tropics and even the frozen North. Travel in two-wheel style on a Renovo bicycle, designed precisely to your specifications. Going green can be so cool. renovobikes.com

Our top wines selected for character and style WELCOME TO 2013 AND ANOTHER YEAR OF FINE WINE. BELOW SEE OUR PICKS FOR THE FIVE MOST COMPELLING WINE TRENDS OF THE SEASON. By Edel Schaub Moss, Certified Sommelier.

BERGSTRÖM CUMBERLAND RESERVE WILLAMETTE VALLEY, OREGON When John and Karen Bergström began Bergström Wines, they wanted to start a business that would become a legacy for their children and pay tribute to John’s agricultural Swedish upbringing. With these dreams in mind, the couple moved from Portland to Dundee, where they planted the Bergström Vineyard on a gentle, south-facing slope overlooking the wide expanses of the Willamette Valley. Each estate vineyard is farmed without the use of harsh chemicals or fertilizers. The winery produces approximately nine thousand cases of ultra-premium, and extremely sought-after, wine each year, including two Chardonnays and nine different Pinot Noirs. The Pinot Noir Cumberland Reserve is dark in color, it displays an earthy minerality, violets, cedar, black cherry, and black raspberry. Dense and rich on the palate this wine brings lots of flavor.

GAIA ESTATE NEMEA, GREECE Greece is now among Europe’s most exciting wine producing countries, full of delights and surprises for wine lovers. This intriguing red wine is produced from the indigenous Agiorgitiko grapes cultivated in seven hectares of vineyard at Koutsi village of Nemea, at an altitude of 550m. A vineyard cultivated with care by keeping yields in low levels and paying great attention to detail, gives the Agiorgitiko grape the chance to ripen and express its powerful character at full strength. The wine matures for at least twelve months in new French barrels. Gaia Estate has a deep red-black color, complex aromatic profile, good structure and great personality.

CHÂTEAU LASCOMBES SECOND GRAND CRU CLASSÉ MARGAUX, BORDEAUX Perhaps the finest second cru ever made the Château Lascombes is a wine that recalls the opulent, viscous, almost Port-like wines that boasts an inky purple color as well as a gorgeously sweet nose of flowers, blackberries, cassis liqueur and graphite. Exotic with impressive intensity, marvelous viscosity, and tremendous purity and depth, this is a tour de force in winemaking and one of the superstars of the Bordeaux region.

PALOMA MERLOT

ST. HELENA, CALIFORNIA

Paloma Vineyard makes some of the best red wine in the world. It is a unique, small, family run winery in Spring Mountain near St. Helena. If you are a serious wine drinker and love great Bordeaux or Napa red wines, then you will certainly love this wine. It is a complex, layered, fascinating Merlot that is very different from the usual California Merlot. The Paloma Merlot, like the great right bank red Bordeaux wines, is primarily Merlot but blended with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep ruby like in color, it has a blackberry aroma with a full luscious silky taste of ripe cherries and plums along with hints of chocolate and minerality that is incredibly layered and complex. The finish is very long and interesting, another sign of a great wine. This wine is very well balanced and quite drinkable now, but will obviously age well over the next ten or fifteen years. The voluptuous layered complexity of this wine in midpalate along with its long finish places it in a rare class. An amazing wine.

BEAUX FRÈRES PINOT NOIR WILLAMETTE VALLEY, OREGON

Spurred on by his brother-in-law, Michael Etzel, who discovered the property in 1986, Robert Parker, Jr. is now one of three owners in Beaux Frères vineyard and winery. For thirty- two years, Parker has written and published the independent wine journal “The Wine Advocate” and authored twelve best-selling books on wine. This voluptuous wine is the prince of Pinot. A delicious ripe fruit profile, with aromas of dark plums and berries, with notes of peat, tea leaf, and sawdust. This wine is unique among Oregon Pinot Noir offerings for its “Burgundian” style with Oregon charm. The uniqueness is demonstrated by its dark red color and hints of black fruits with a subtle stem, brier and savory mushroom accents.

The Wonder of Wellington Where The Equestrian Elite Meet

I

If you fancy yourself at all equestrian – either by design or by the britches you wear, Wellington is the place to be in the winter. Fabulously international and stylish, the city is filled with tall black boots and polos. Thousands of competitors, trainers, owners and their families with agendas and interests that involve a fine four-legged animal ascend upon Palm Beach County beginning in December each year. A young city, Wellington was incorporated on December 31, 1995, but has experienced incredible growth over the last decade or so. Considered the winter equestrian capital of the world and a Money Magazine “Top 100 Places to Live”, the metropolis is home to horses and humans from near and far. Within its 45 square miles are equestrian events galore. Private farms dot the landscape surrounding Wellington. Whether a polo mallet, a dressage whip or a riding crop is in your repertoire, the likelihood of running across an international award-winning competitor in the grocery is high. Almost always sunny and warm, the weather is ideal for equestrian sport. With a goal to create a uniquely exquisite equestrian destination, the Wellington Equestrian Partners (WEP) have invested over $200 million dollars in the development of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC). Over the three-month winter season, the show grounds host both the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival (FTI WEF) and the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF). Offering the highest level of competition available, these two disciplines draw the best and most decorated riders from

all over the world. Competing for nearly $7 million in prize money, this elite collection of equestrian excellence includes over 5,500 equines and 2,800 riders from 50 states and 33 countries. Whether on a horse or in the stands, in Wellington you are among the equestrian elite. And the equestrian energy is palpable.

Something for everyone. Whether one of the equestrian elite, a wannabe or an adoring fan, join in on the winter season wonder of Wellington.

The Young & the Talented

BY JACKIE FREUNDLICH-MCFARLAND.

A

s mentioned in previous articles - The Young and the Talented – Part One: Teenagers (April/May 2012) and The Young and the Talented – Part Two: Females Under 30 (June/July 2012) – there is no lack of aspiring young equestrian stars in our midst. In Part Three, I had the honor of interviewing six men, also all under age 30, who are equally as impressive as the 12 in the previous pieces. These six stories begin both typically and atypically from sitting in the saddle as a newborn to not picking up the reins until age 14. The Olympic rings are a part of the experience for several on the list. One comes from an Olympic family, another is slowly but

surely climbing up to be a team member and yet another was the youngest in the top 20 of the 2012 Olympics. Each story is unique however each the same – passionate about horse sport, winning and serious in their pursuit of representing their country. Discussing the future of our sport with these men from the US and abroad inspires me to take the time to explore what is available for young riders in other countries and compare it to what paths are offered here. Meet the young men featured in Part Three of this series. This group of talented twenty-somethings chose to be in Wellington this season to compete against the best in the world.

Age first time on a horse: 12 Age first time competing in the jumper ring: 14 in the Children’s Jumpers . Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: I think I always knew. I have always been a dreamer, so I was probably pretending that I was in a big Grand Prix when I was in the Children’s jumpers. Age you rode in your first international level grand prix: 25 – 2011 was my first season competing in Grand Prix. Top three highlights of your riding years to date: 2012: Member of the wining Nation’s Cup team with HH Carotino in Buenos. 2011: Going clear in the Grand Prix of Valkenswaard, The Netherlands with HH Calvano. I worked at Stal Tops, so it was very special to come back there and do well. 1999: Beginner Children’s Champion of the year with Cricket Goes Hawaiian. I always loved winning. Equestrian goals: To be a consistent and successful participant of Nations Cup teams and major championships. Why did you choose to compete at the Wellington Equestrian Festival (WEF)?

WEF is the best venue in the world in the winter months. There are classes for all of our horses and we are able to compete at a high level while staying in one place for six months. If you could compete on any horse, who would it be & why? I would choose Corradina, who is ridden by Carsten Otto Nagel of Germany. She is an amazing horse that is the perfect combination of power and elasticity. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? Yes, but there needs to be more support. Current programs such as USHJA’s Emerging Athletes offer a great opportunity to young junior talent, but I feel that there is a gap in support for riders just out of the junior ranks. This is the time when many young people are starting to work instead of just ride as competitors and they need guidance and support to make the step into being a successful professional rider. How about the overall state of show jumping in 2013? : London Olympics gave show jumping a great boost, having the home team

Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: I didn’t know it was my thing until I was about 10 yrs old. My older cousin, Joseph, was showing and talked about top riders like Ludger and Rodrigo.

win team gold pushed show jumping into the spotlight. On the US side, we are going through a changing of the guard as we lose George Morris as our Chef d’Equipe and gain Robert Ridland. Rich Fellers and Flexible’s World Cup Final win was an amazing way to kick off a new chapter in US show jumping. Name your three top role models: Hunter Harrison, Norman Dello Joio, Joe Fargis. Favorites: Horse Show: Spruce Meadows Summer Tournament. It is five weeks of intense competition with great courses, great prize money and beautiful grass rings. TV: “Homeland”. Songs: Right now-“Rest my chemistry”-Interpol, “You are what you love”Jenny Lewis, “Oops”-Tweet. Food: Lentils!

Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: 17 in Tennessee. First international class was at 19 at the WEF Nations Cup Week, CSIO4* Top three highlights of your riding years to date: 2010/2011: performing well in the 2011 Pan Am Games (top 10) and 2012 Olympic Games (top 20) on Sancha LS. 2012: winning the $500,000 FTI Consulting Grand Prix, CSIO5* at WEF week 12. 2009: won 3 GPs in a row, 3 weeks in a row – $50,000 in Saugerties, $100k WCQ in Ontario Canada, won $100k HITS Invtnl with my first real Grand Prix horse – now pretty much retired. These have been the stairs in my career – my climb up. Equestrian goals: I want to be the best horseman that I can be. Could mean that I’m top ten in the world, who knows, but want to be the best I can be. Why did you choose to compete at the Wellington Equestrian Festival (WEF)? This is our base. We own Bluman Equestrian here in Palm Beach Point. Close to Columbia and close my people. If you could compete on any horse, who would it be & why? My Sancha LS – wouldn’t want any other horse that is currently competing. Would love to ride Eric’s Hickstead and Rodrigo’s Baloubet due Rouet - I watched those horses all the time. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young tal-

ent? In Europe yes. In other parts of the world – no. It’s very expensive in the states. In Europe if you are a farmer you can have a horse and show for 30 Euros. My parents helped me get a riding education –– I have them to thank. How about the overall state of show jumping in 2013? The management at WEF has worked hard to create a great atmosphere and draw crowds. The sport is advancing and changing– better horses, stronger talent, great facilities – more attention for the sport worldwide. This is good. We need measures to treat animals fairly – they need to be more objective – but I’m really optimistic. Name your three top role models: Dr. Jorge Gomez – he came from nothing, works hard and has become one of the best vets, he is my role model. Nelson “Neco” Pessoa and my family. Favorites: Horse Show: That is a hard one. I love Sat. Night Lights in Wellington, Spruce Meadows – and in Europe – Madrid, La Baule – wherever the top riders are, always makes for a great show. TV: “X Factor”, “American Idol”, “The Voice” Movie: Hard to pick just one. I’ll choose Life Is Beautiful Songs: “We Are The World”- USA for Africa, “Because We Believe” –Andrea Bocelli “Hey Jude” – The Beatles. And a ton of Columbian music. Food: Nothing beats a good salad – but anything healthy.

Age first time on a horse: probably when I got home from the hospital, but on my own at age 4. Age first time competing in the jumper ring: 7 in the Children’s Jumpers. Age you knew you wanted to compete at the International level: I didn’t really know about the Olympic level until I was 19, I entered the 2008 Olympic Trials with an open mind – and ended up 4th & 12th. Then had a great tour in Europe – and was chosen to be 2nd alternate. At that point I knew. Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: 11 in Detroit, MI and Lake Placid, NY Top three highlights of your riding years to date: 2012: Devon Horse Show – Chill R Z was the only horse not to have a rail all week in the two observation events. 2010: 2nd in Pfizer million dollar class on Athena. Two in jump off –Mclain and me. 2009: Lead off rider in Nations Cup in St. Gallen – jumped a clear round for my country plus was first clear. Equestrian goals: Yeah [laughs] that gold medal around my neck is kind of my #1 goal. But overall to keep improving my riding and raise the top level of the sport. Why did you choose to compete at the Wellington Equestrian Festival (WEF)?

Location. We have a farm across the street. The weather is ideal during this time. If you could compete on any horse, who would it be & why? Good question. I’d probably ride Calypso –he looked like he was very light on his feet and understood his game. Every 10 years there are 4-5 horses like that. Like Shutterfly, Hickstead, Baloubet and maybe Big Star for Nick. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? I think it does. There’s no other sport in the world where an 18 year old junior and a young amateur rider can compete against veterans like in our grand prix classes. Reed Kessler stepped in at a young age and proved her talent. How about the overall state of show jumping in 2013? I think it’s in a good place. Competition at the Olympics is better and better. More countries are competing – so it is getting tougher. If you look at statistics – last 4 Olympics it was Germany or US – now there are more riders, more countries, more participation. Everyone on the US team jumped well at the Olympics – a few rails meant no medal but we are strong as a country and the new Chef D’Equipe will infuse new excitement. Name your three top role models: My

Age first time on a horse: When I was 3. Rode with my cousins, I would share horses with Daniel. Age first time competing in the jumper ring: 8 in the jumpers. Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: I always knew. I would watch videos of Rodrigo and all the famous riders. In 2009 I decided to move to Wellington and turn professional. I started as a working student and then went to G&C Farm. I learned a lot from Pablo Barrios and met Gustavo and now I ride for him. Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: 19, in 2010 at the spring circuit in Wellington. Top three highlights of your riding years to date: 2009: moving to the United States. 2012: First grand prix level win, the 1.45m G&C Farm Classic in December at Holiday & Horses. Ongoing: having Gustavo and Carolina decide to sponsor me. It’s a dream. Equestrian goals: Be top ten in the world – go to the Olympics – win – all that stuff. Why did you choose to compete at the Wellington Equestrian Festival (WEF)? My sponsors are based here. This is where

Favorites: Horse Show: It was The Charlotte Jumper Classic – the four years I competed I won a class very year. a majority of top riders are – this is the place if you want to be in the top of the sport. If you could compete on any horse, who would it be & why? I would say Hickstead — for me he was the best horse in the world. I loved Baloubet too — but Hickstead is my choice. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? You have to work for what you want. What happened to me is somewhat unheard of. I am young and very lucky to have a sponsor. I met Gustavo, he liked me, saw that I work hard and thought I had talent. How about the overall state of show jumping in 2013? The quality level is higher and higher – the quality of horses better and better – courses are tougher and tougher, delicate jumps, technical tracks. The great ride needs to come from a solid, educated base. For me I am learning to flat a horse well, that level of control is everything. Name your three top role models: My dad is my idol – he is a great supporter. My cousin Daniel – he’s worked so hard to be where is – top 100 in the world – that is so great for him and for Columbia.

Gustavo for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. Favorites: Horse Show: The Hampton Classic – the venue is amazing. Such a nice setting. TV: “Friends” – funny. Movie: I love movies – one of my favorites is Walk The Line. Songs: hmmm – laughs – I love every kind of music. But my top 3 – the ones that inspire me to be better every day –“Hero” – Mariah Carey “Don’t Wake Me Up” – Chris Brown “It Was the Time of Our Life” – Green Day. Food: I love Mexican food – steak & chicken burrito.

Age first time on a horse: 5, my dad has always had horses. Age first time competing in the jumper ring: 12 in GB’s version of hunters, called ‘show’ classes. Started in jumpers at 16. Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: When I was invited to be on the Under 18 Nations Cup Team, won Team Gold and Individual Silver. Then I thought, ‘I’m actually not too bad.’ Owning Omelli, horse of a lifetime, assisted in my aspirations. Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: 17 first Senior Grand Prix. Got a taste and a bit of success and wanted to carry on. Top three highlights of your riding years to date: 2008: A favorite moment was winning the Nations Cup in Dublin with Robert Smith, Nick Skelton, Peter Charles and me – brilliant class, very exciting until the last horse. 2008: Winning the Grand Prix in Munich –big class with big money & big names. To come out on top was a fantastic feeling. 2004: Best memory was winning my first Grand Prix, a 3* in Holland – I was 18. I thought, ‘I can do this against the big guys.’ Equestrian goals: Now that I’m older and left the sport for a couple of years, my goals are to do as well as I can with a new string. I’m learning every aspect of the business, love it and love the process. I have a more all-around respect.

16Equ_Young ok.indd 73

years I thought that this was something I could do. This is the point when I made a career decision, and started focusing on what it would take to ride at the top level. Age you rode in your first Grand Prix: 18 – on Draco in Wellington. First win, actually back-to-back wins, was Atlanta Classic at age 20. Top three highlights of your riding years to date: 2010: Maxine Beard Show Jumping Developing Rider Award. 2012: My $100k World Cup Qualifier, Bromont, Quebec win with Scarface. Ongoing: the ability to work with so many different experts in every aspect who continue to shape me. Equestrian goals: To have a very strong business in the sport and to achieve the highest level of competition. Why did you choose to compete at the Wellington Equestrian Festival (WEF)? I actually grew up here in Wellington. Twenty years ago my parents picked FL over NY as our base, so I’m a true beach boy, my dad’s been training out of our farm here for many years. If you could compete on any horse, who would it be & why? Baloubet du Rouet a hundred times over. He had some much fire

Why did you choose to compete at the Wellington Equestrian Festival (WEF)? Bought the farm! (last May) Came here to ride on the Nations Cup team when I was 19 – stayed here for 3 weeks. It’s more than just a show out here, it’s a way of life – when I saw this farm I knew it was what I wanted. If you could compete on any horse, who would it be & why? Who would that be… maybe Milton. It was a different era back then – wonder how he would go now? Would be interesting to see. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? I believe the system in Europe is brilliant, bringing along riders to participate on teams. Not that the US system doesn’t work – look at Reed & Jessie – you have some top talent. The right horse is a massive factor. When the horse is right you can focus on the details and questions on course. Finding those horses is very hard. And next, very important, proper management of top horses. Norman Dello Joio is a tremendous help for me. How about the overall state of show jumping in 2013? I’m desperate to get back to where I was but it’s a bit harder now– more competitive. Look at Scott Brash and Ben Maher – they are seriously good jockeys. Skelton and Charles are veterans. What those guys did at the Olympics is brilliant; it started with a Bronze at the Euro Cham-

and talent – a master of his craft – and he was fast. Hickstead was the same way. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? Currently there are fewer opportunities for naturally talented riders without financial backing. There are programs developing with goals to assist riders in finding a path – Emerging Athletes, NARG Grant – but there needs to be more. How about the overall state of show jumping in 2013? The sport has its challenges but London created such an intense level of excitement. It was great sport with packed stands – we needed that. Inspires me to look to the next Olympics – working hard now with that as one of my goals. Name your three top role models: Tim Gredley. Ludger Beerbaum. My parents. Favorites: Horse Show: Spruce Meadows is the best. The best facilities, best organization – that place has all the ingredients of top sport. TV: Lately “Newsroom” also “Californication” and “Entourage” Movie: Scarface –hence my horse’s name. They have similar personalities. Songs: Any classic rock and reggae – I listen to all kinds of music. Food: Stone crab claws. Love French & Italian food.

pionships. One of Scott’s owners made the move over to show jumping from racehorses. The sport is getting bigger with global tours offering big prize money – it’s more than a hobby. Name your three top role models: Tiger Wood as a sportsman, not for his personal life. Ludger Beerbaum a fantastic horseman, top of the sport. My father – I’ve always looked up to him. Favorites: Horse Show: Outdoor show - Dublin. Indoor show – Olympia (London). TV: “Two and a Half Men”. Movie: “Inglorious Basterds” with Brad Pitt. Songs: Any song by Swedish House Mafia. Selections

Some hold the misconception that most SUVs are lifeless and dull, and that this type of vehicle was created just for soccer moms. Dispel the doubts with these three breathtaking exemplars of power and performance. BY MARIO CRUZ.

EVEN AT THE HIGHEST echelon of automobile manufacturing, there are elements that separate the finest examples from the rest. One such case is the unrivalled Mercedes Benz G500. Specifically designed at the request of the Shah of Iran as a vehicle that could survive the brutal Persian landscape, it has also been the official vehicle for Pope Benedict XVI, a military transportation unit across the world, and displayed prominently in some of the most exclusive dealerships in America. The Mercedes Benz G-Class has reigned for more than thirty years, and is frequently celebrated for its off-road prowess, stability and performance. Surprisingly, these vehicles were only available in the United States via a gray market importer in the Southwest until 2002, when Mercedes Benz began officially importing this series. The manufacturer has committed to continue produce this icon through 2020. The G500 is consistently ranked among the top SUVs in both luxury and off-road categories. With the widest gear range of any SUV, the seven-speed automatic transmission, 5.0 liter V8 engine commands over 380 hor-

16Equ_TestDrive.indd 74

sepower, surrounded by one of the most uncompromising constructions in automotive history. From the extensive underbody protective plating, three sequentially lockable differentials, agile suspension and exceptional weight distribution, the G-Class can amazingly climb or descend inclines of 80 percent, and even handle a lateral slope of 54 percent. The G-class continues to honor the original design while subtly adding contemporary features that are unique to Mercedes Benz, from the latest COMAND navigation, a peerless 450-watt, 12-speaker audio system and safety features that include a new stability control system, rear-facing cameras, as well as parking and blind spot assisting technology. The G500 is an icon of luxury – from its sustainably forested wood trim, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and premium leather throughout the cabin, all impeccably crafted by hand. Unparalleled performance and off-road features, combined with an unmistakable look and unmatched comfort, ensure that this SUV will be remembered as an icon in its time.

Conquer all terrains with the G500, the SUV that places a premium on stability.

Audi Q5

AUDI IS SYNONYMOUS with exceptional quality, luxury and design innovation. Take these elements and add a singular audacity in the design of their sport utility vehicles, and the result is the phenomenal Audi Q5, an SUV that unequivocally stands alone. Equipped with the new supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, the Q5 features 272 horsepower, making it both stronger and more efficient than the V6 it replaced. The upcoming Q5 hybrid will soon be available, and will combine 245 horsepower with stellar fuel economy. Under ideal road conditions, the power of the Q5 is 60 percent focused in the rear wheels to help maximize acceleration and cornering. But as conditions change, the ratio is instantaneously optimized for superior grip and control. Though the daytime LED running lights give the vehicle its distinctive Audi appearance, one of the most exciting developments of the Q5 is the Adaptive Xenon Plus Headlights. When driving straight, the light is dispersed over a large area and farther down the road on the passenger’s side to improve long-range visibility. Activated by subtle

steering wheel input, the headlights can swivel up to 15 degrees, easily tracking the turns and curves of the road ahead. Most impressively, a cornering light activates when the turn signal is engaged, offering a well-lit path before the car even initiates the turn. From walnut inlays to finely stitched premium leather, plus the custom three-spoke steering wheel, every inch inside the Q5 has been carefully crafted with luxury and comfort in mind. Twelveway, power adjustable front seats are combined with multiple rear seat split-folding configurations, and a three-zone automatic climate control ensures that everyone throughout the SUV is comfortable. No detail on the Q5 has been overlooked. Even the power tailgate features a unique clamshell design that seamlessly integrates into the rear of the vehicle, and offers programmable end points so that the opening height can be adjusted to any space, regardless of the size. Every aspect of this luxury SUV adds up to a truly distinguished fusion that puts the Audi Q5 in a class of its own.

When the inimitable Land Rover presented the new Range Rover Evoque as a commemoration of this landmark occasion, it picked a vehicle that perfectly represents the brand with a design based on the groundbreaking LRX concept SUV. The inspiration behind the LRX concept was the goal of producing a smaller, more environmentally conscious vehicle, and its size complemented a wide array of efficiency improving advances in the form of Land Rover’s e_Terrain technologies. These include lightweight construction materials, biofuel compatibility and regenerative brakes to name a few. The Range Rover Evoque abandons the traditional body on frame design adopted by almost all other off-road vehicles, and is instead constructed with a more contemporary unibody style for augmented handling and

advanced ride quality. This feature is especially appealing to those of us who, while dreaming of off-road adventure, spend most of our time driving on pavement and appreciate unequalled comfort. The inventive design is powered by an economical yet formidable engine with four cylinders and 2.0 liters of assisted slide, unleashing 240 horsepower. The Evoque’s engine has direct fuel injection and a double-changeable distribution system on every valve. Coupled with the performance boost, the motor also releases less carbon dioxide into the environment. Blending the perfect balance of performance and luxury, the Range Rover Evoque uses sophisticated materials and equally sophisticated electronics. This stunning SUV can also boast environmentallyfriendly modernization. If you are looking for unparalleled style, performance and elegance, the Range Rover Evoque is an ideal choice.

hey’re called racehorses, and in fact they can run fast, but the Thoroughbred horses trained in the sport of racing are so much more. Descending from some of the greatest equine athletes, their crafted bloodlines breathe life into many beloved stories of triumph. The tales of Seabiscuit and Secretariat remind us all of the amazing conquests of horse and rider - stories of underdogs, bravery, and faith. Bred for their speed, grace, and spirit, the Thoroughbred is a well-known name, especially in Kentucky, Florida, and California, where some of the greatest horses of our time have made history. We watch these amazing creatures; often when they are just two years old, compete at racetracks all over the nation in front of grandstands filled with spectators. No matter what race we watch, or which horses are running, we are always impressed by their ability to effortlessly define the true essence of both sportsmanship and showmanship. Historically referred to as the ‘Sport of Kings,’ Thoroughbred race horses are responsible for the financial success of their owners, breeders, trainers, and often-times gambling spectators at the racetrack. Each race they run determines their ultimate value. As there is only one winner in a race, only the top elite out of the thousands competing on the track are able to stay in the racing industry for any significant amount of time. Most are deemed unfit for their job at some point in their racing career due to lack of speed or an injury.

Although the fate of the retired racehorse may be uncertain, history has proven that these majestic athletes have the ability, versatility and spirit to excel in a second career. From racehorse to sport horse, these equine can have new beginnings with new families. True examples of how rewarding a second chance can be, often young and used only for galloping, these horses are introduced to a new world with careers as show horses, pleasure mounts, even therapy horses. These transitions, however, can be few and far between as often horses do not have a place to go to after being retired from their racing careers. The racing industry is supportive and reliant on the aftercare organizations to assist in making a transition from the track to a potential home. Facilitating these lifestyle changes for horses are organizations such as the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) and the 18 various aftercare organizations funded by CARMA’s grants. Working with breeders, trainers, and owners, ex-racehorses have a safe, welcoming place to go to before they find their new calling. Taking a fine-tuned, high-strung racehorse and teaching it to become a relaxed, focused riding horse is an art. Done correctly with patience

and commitment, the connection can evolve into an amazing competitive partnership. In 2013 CARMA is proud to announce the launch of a series of three horse shows, made possible by the Siegel-CARMA Endowment, dedicated to off the track Thoroughbreds. Aptly titled, ‘The Thoroughbred Classic Horse Show,’ (TCHS), the first event is on April 20-21, 2012 at the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park in San Juan Capistrano, CA with additional shows in July and October. With several successful Thoroughbred horse shows on the east coast, the TCHS Series is the first of its kind on the West Coast. With the opportunity to compete in a breed specific show, the strong base of riders who are passionate about this breed can demonstrate as well as advocate how the Thoroughbred can have a successful second career. CARMA is pleased to offer an opportunity for Thoroughbred owners to showcase their horses in a more supportive and loving environment. Prior to the popularity of Warmbloods, Thoroughbreds dominated the show rings. Providing a supportive forum, the TCHS offers top trainers an avenue to transition Thoroughbreds into the ‘A’ rated circuits yet accessible enough for those competing at lower rated events. This effort will help increase the marketability of Thoroughbreds as show horses. The Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park, a high-end and sophisticated venue, is centrally located in Southern California. The TCHA series will also offer year-end awards to the champions in each division, including classes for Hunters, Jumpers, Dressage, Combined Training, Western, Showmanship and more. The weekend festivities will kick-off with clinics in multiple disciplines by top professional trainers, an Exhibitor’s Welcome Dinner, plus a VIP Luncheon and Silent Auction during the highlight $1,500 Hunter Derby and $1,500 Jumper Stakes. Beyond being a Thoroughbred only horse show, the event will promote the aftercare organizations instrumental in transitioning these horses off the track. An excellent ‘arena’ to help these organizations gain exposure, the TCHS will

work to develop relationships with racehorse breeders and owners by encouraging them to participate in the successful transition from racehorse to sport horse.

IND ROMANCE IN THE CITY OF BARILOCHE in the Argentinean foothills. Whether of you

VENICE, ROMANTIC BY NATURE, is a group of 118 islands separated by canals, but linked by bridges. Renowned for its beauty, architecture and many works of art, the city is magical. Erected literally in the water and reminiscent of a fairy tale, The New York Times refers to Venice as “undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man”. The building foundations are constructed on closely spaced wooden piles of alder wood. Alder is highly water resistant. These pilings form the foundation for such architectural masterpieces as the ornate Basilica of St. Mark, undoubtedly the most impressive edifice in Venice. The Gondola rides across the Gran Canal are a dreamy must. A flat bottom boat designed to navigate the waterways; gondolas can be simple in design, or ornately furnished with a heart shaped bench and plushy cushions. Most gondoliers’ are dressed in the iconic black and white stripe polo shirts in reverence to Marco Polo. Go for the classic ride and seal your love with a kiss under the Rialto Bridge. The Metropole Hotel, one of the more lavish places in Venice, offers its guests views of the brilliant blue lagoon and is walking distance to St. Marc Square. Known for a splendid collection of antiques, the rooms are exquisitely appointed and reminiscent of the golden age. Classic and cozy, the Metropole is an excellent escape. Don’t miss L`osteria alla Testiere, in the heart of Venice, for fine gastronomy. “Indulge yourself with shellfish pleasures” such as baby squid wrapped in gnocchi… Delizisio.

Mykonos is a small charming and legendary little island located in the Aegean Sea. The island is amazingly striking in contrasts, with bleached white buildings and deep turquoise waters. But the main attractions are the lively nightlife and its proximity to Delos, a historical archeological zone. The Aegean Sea is a playground for extreme water sports. Parasail, windsurf, water-ski or jet ski in the waters off the south beach. Play by day and by night. Known for an upscale nightlife, this tiny Greek isle hosts a variety of clubs and most stay open until dawn. Post wild and rowdy nights it’s time re-energize and renew. Mykonos offers the soul-stirring La Residence Suites, a charming five star destination that blends Mediterranean passion with a fresh Colonial French style. Beautiful hand-made crystal tiles adorn the walls while colonial pillars and palm trees grace the grounds of the hotel. This paradise is set just steps away from the beach of Kalo Livadi, and walking distance from the monastery of Panagia Tourliani. Spend your final evening dining at the famous Avra restaurant. Set in a dreamed secluded garden courtyard with ocean views, Avra offers delicacies of Greek and international cuisine.

are of an adventurous or relaxed nature, there is something for everyone in this Patagonian paradise. Located in these snow-covered foothills of the Andes, Bariloche is a playground for extreme sports: ice climb in the frozen glass canyons, paraglide in the currents, or snowboard down the geometric turns of a slalom course. If a calmer venue appeals, try fishing on a motionless lake reminiscent of a picturesque postcard. Bariloche is the entrance to the famous Andean lakes; the quiet solitude is its own reward. The place to stay is elegant and exclusive El Casco Art Hotel. Located midway between Bariloche and Llao Llao, the hotel has 33 beautiful rooms each with its own view of Lake Nahuel Huap. Scattered across the venue are a collection of paintings and sculptures by some of the most acclaimed LatinAmerican artists. The setting is chic and intimate surrounded by incredible architecture amidst pampered luxury. For the connoisseur, Argentina boasts magnificent wine. The underground cellar of Alto el Fuego restaurant houses reds and whites from the most celebrated vineyards from across the country. With the assistance of the sommelier you may select a vintage from one or more of the 1700 bottles. Nestled on the lake and painted in warm colors, El Casco Art Hotel is the key ingredient on the perfect recipe for an ideal getaway.

Aston Martin on Ice

license to thrill

Speed, luxury and thrill combine for an adventure worthy of 007. The experience begins at the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains, an exclusive five star hotel that stands out like a fairytale castle deep in the snowy mountains of St. Moritz, Switzerland. Once all the participants have arrived, they gather at the Aston Martin Igloo located outside the hotel to toast with James Bond’s favorite champagne: the delicious Bollinger Special Cuvée.

Afterward, everyone is transported to a picturesque mountain chalet to enjoy a delicious Swiss-style feast. Drivers are advised to get plenty of rest, as the next day will bring a new level of adrenaline rush. One they have likely never experienced before. The second day of the adventure begins early in the morning, as drivers and their guests are transported from the hotel to the ice field. All participants are given ice-driving lessons to develop their skills. Drifting on the snow in one of the world’s most recognizable luxury cars has never been so accessible or breathtakingly thrilling. The Aston Martin line is fully represented – and each car is outfitted with winter tires, sophisticated electronic safety systems and fully insured. And since all Aston Martin cars are rearwheel drive, these activities on the snow and ice clearly demonstrate the car’s capabilities as well as their stability and traction control. Hundreds of drivers from over twenty countries have completed the course, and the program is now in its fifth year. Every year since its inception it completely sells out. At press time only two dates are still available for 2013. All you need to do is arrive, poised for adventure. The Aston Martins are ready for you. astonmartinonice.com

NARG TOP 25 Just three years ago, the North American Riders Group began an initiative to rank the top horse shows and tournaments in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Think of it as the ‘Competitors, Owners & Trainers’ Report, a guide to the best competition in North America. Valuable to all involved from show management to spectator, and especially riders, pictured here are some of North America’s BEST. These top ranked events put sport first and the results are spectacular. Crowds cheers as tremendously talented horse and rider couples battle it out over beautiful and difficult courses of jumps. And, we should mention, the social scene is superb. Note that show jumping is the only sport where male and female show jumpers, both horse and rider, compete equally. If you haven’t witnessed it live, plan to attend one of the NARG Top 25. In 2012 the top 5 include: Spruce Meadows: Calgary, AB, Devon Horse Show & Country Fair: Devon, PA, Thunderbird Show Park: Langley, BC, Alltech National Horse Show: Lexington, KY and Del Mar National: Del Mar, CA.

Trump Invitational It was an idyllic January day in Palm Beach for the inaugural $100,000 Trump Invitational Grand Prix. Set at the magnificent Mar-A-Lago Club, the colorful course bordered the Intracoastal Waterway with jumps made of larger-than-life bottles of Veuve Cliquot, Hermes gift boxes and more. An impressive group of horses and riders competed on a grass floor surrounded by an equally impressive list of VIP guests. Sport, entertainment and philanthropy filled the air as well as the sweet voice of The Voice winner Cassadee Pope, who opened the event. A native to West Palm Beach, in appreciation of her appearance Equestrian Sport Productions CEO Mark Bellissimo donated $10,000 to a charity Pope works with in the area. A gracious host, Donald Trump generously donated $100,000 to the 2013 FTI Great Charity Challenge. A splendid day, Trump already has plans for the second annual event.
