Femme Addiction When enough is not enough

Have you ever found yourself looking at someone, admiring the way they are dressed, (almost) turning green with envy? Don’t fret; luckily we have discovered the perfect accessory that will create a reverse effect; now, people will turn green when they see you walk in the room (or anywhere else, for that matter!) No matter the size or color, purses are the new items that can make or break an outfit. They are not just bags to stuff things into. They are much more than that! They are a symbol of status and fashionable style. You can never have enough purses or enough storage space in your closet to keep them locked away, safe and clean.

Gucci

Chanel

From modest beginnings at the end of the 19th century, Gucci has become one of the world’s most successful manufacturers of high-end leather goods. An authentic Gucci bag is a symbol of status recognized by both men and women all over the world. Owning one ensures you the respect and attention of even the pickiest fashion fanatic. This model is made in ostrich, something rarely seen in other brands.

Karl Lagerfeld is a designer who has given a touch of fresh air and creativity to the brand and this time he has reloaded a classic. This 2.55 handbag was born when Coco Chanel, tired of having to carry her purse in her arms, designed a model that freed up her hands. Inspired by the straps found in soldiers’ bags, Chanel added thin straps and introduced the resulting design to the market in 1929.

Having new purses not only feels good and exciting, it also opens your world into new possibilities. After acquiring your first luxury purse nothing will ever be the same: you will get admiring nods from strangers and comments from friends about your new acquisition. You will come across women with similar designer bags slung over their shoulders and they will nod and smile at you, like members of a secret society. Do you remember your first brand bag? The feeling of holding it for the first time knowing that it was all yours? You treated it as if it were your newly born child, never leaving it out of sight, grabbing a place just for it, as if there were no safe place for it to rest. I believe this feeling never goes away. It comes up each time you get a new one, it doesn’t matter which brand, texture, color or size you purchase. That is why we recommend you to get one or all of these must-have bags. They are the classics of the most prestigious brands, rendered with a modern twist. These, in their own unique way, are timeless fashion statements that you want to keep close to you.

MULBERRY

Bottega Veneta

Hermès

Classic, elegant, stylish… these words can only refer to the French fashion giant Givenchy. Since its beginning in 1952, the brand has maintained a touch of elegance that has put it at the head of the fashion industry. Givenchy´s Nightingale bag is nothing short of fabulous, thanks to the modern edege given to an otherwise classic shape.

Bottega Veneta’s renown has risen over time, thanks to the quality of its craftsmanship and the appeal of its discreet, no-logo design. The Knot is one of its most beloved handbags. It comes in satin intrecciato and is trimmed in python. The rounded box clutch, based on an archival shape is a masterpiece of design and artisanal craftsmanship.

Since 1981, this handmade purse by Hermès, named after actress and singer Jane Birkin, has become an icon. Due to its high price and elusiveness to the public, this bag is a synonym of wealth. Another thing to keep in mind is that it takes several days to make one of these bags, for each one is sewn, buffed, painted, and polished by hand. That is exactly what gives this baby its value.

BLENHEIM EQUISPORTS: CALIFORNIA COMPETITION IS HOT WITH A SIZZLING SUMMER LEADING TO A FABULOUS FALL

18 [ equlifestyle.com ]

three $50,000 CSI-W events in three locations, Del Mar, San Juan Capistrano and Las Vegas.

QUALIFYING TO COMPETE AT THE WORLD CUP FINALS The first of the three World Cup Qualifiers, the $50,000 Grand Prix of Showpark, was September 3rd, on the International Grass Grand Prix Field. A little less than two weeks later, we went Indoors for the $50,000 Blenheim World Cup Qualifying Grand Prix in the Blenheim Covered Arena on Friday night, September 16th. Our final qualifier, The $50,000 Las Vegas Grand Prix, is on Saturday, November 5th at the South Point Equestrian Arena in Las Vegas.

Qualifier 1: Del Mar: Brown Brings Home The Blues Australian Harley Brown and his 18.2 hand mate “Cassiato” earned the blue sash, the top prize money and valuable World Cup points for a job well done in the $50,000 Grand Prix of Showpark, presented by The Grand Del Mar. Of the twenty entries in the World Cup qualifying class, this pair was the only match to master Anthony D’Ambrosio’s course without fault.

uly was superb from the intimate setting of our inaugural Surf & Turf Classic at Blenheim Farms to the series of July shows at Showpark in Del Mar. We eased into August by wrapping up at Showpark and heading north to the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park in San Juan Capistrano for two weeks, where we welcomed the USEF Junior Hunter Finals, West Coast and more grand prix events. The grass fields were all dressed up for the competitive occasions and we congratulate all who had the opportunity to participate in these prestigious classes. The much-anticipated World Cup Qualifying and Medal Finals season commenced in August. We opened it with the CPHA (California Professional Horseman’s Association) hosting their first equitation final for juniors and amateurs in the Blenheim Covered Arena. Next the CPHA Foundation Equitation Championships awarded deserving wins in three divisions, 14 & under, 21 & under and 22 & over. The ASPCA Maclay Regional Finals determined which junior riders will have the chance to compete in the national finals in Lexington, Kentucky against top riders from all over the United States. FEI World Cup Qualifiers are in full swing. This year we are hosting

After watching the first two horses complete the track in less than 75 seconds, D’Ambrosio shortened his time allowed from 80 to 76 seconds. Two horses later, Ilan Ferder’s “Combina” with Kirsten Coe, was fault free over the jumps but stopped the clock in 78.51, scoring one time fault. Thirteen entries later “Uwwalon” and Michelle Spadone were gorgeous around the course. But with a time of 78.47 they too scored one time fault. When asked about the time allowed decision post class, the veteran course designer D’Ambrosio said “I thought the decision was perfect when the first few horses had times in the low seventies. I think if you asked the riders they would agree that those with time faults rode careful and clear, not as conscious of the time.” Knowing the riders want to be challenged with these World Cup Qualifers in order to be prepared to compete at a World Cup level, D’Ambrosio set a course that did just that. He continued “It was a good result over a tough course—I believe they got what they wanted.” Brown planned for the tight time in his ride. “‘Cassiato’ is a big and slow type, I’ve had time faults before. I always go in thinking the time is going to be tight.” Sitting with his six-year-old daughter Zoe at the autograph table, Brown was beaming after a fantastic day. In his fifth season with “Cassiato,” Brown’s bringing along several more horses. Earlier that morning his five-year-old horse “Cash” finished first with three clean rounds in the Young Jumper Championships.

Qualifier # 2: San Juan Capistrano: Ladies Night! Coe Operates for a One-Two Victory Twenty couples toured the track designed by Leopoldo Palacios in the $50,000 World Cup Qualifying Grand Prix, presented by Equ Lifestyle Magazine in the Blenheim Farms Covered Arena. Of those twenty we saw four fault free trips, all ridden by talented young women. Palacios designed a track with a variety of tests, difficult to jump clean yet not difficult to get around. Each of the twelve numbered efforts came down with the exception of fence eight. The back rail of the final fence, a wide liverpool oxer in front of the in-gate, came out of the cups most often, catching about a third of the class.

Top Left: Lane Clarke and “Semira De Saulieu.” Top Right: Victory for Susan Hutchison and “Cantano.” Bottom Right: CPHA Junior Medal Final winner Demi Steigler with trainers Robyn Steigler & Archie Cox on the left, sponsor and CPHA representatives on the right. Bottom Left: Harley Brown and Oak Park Group’s “Cassiato.”

[ October / November ] 19

Third in the order and first clean was nineteen-year-old Saer Coulter riding Corpernicus Stable’s “Cash 51.” Several tried, but none succeeded until Kirsten Coe galloped in on the high jumping “Combina” (Ilan Ferder, owner), who didn’t touch a single rail. Soon after another solid female show jumper, Michelle Spadone, rode Morgan Hill Partner’s “Uwwalon” without fault. Not another couple went clean until Coe returned on her second mount, Ilan Ferder’s “Baronez,” and then there were three fabulous females to return on four horses. The jump-off was a true test of speed and accuracy, as the time allowed was tight and two of the four contenders ended up with time faults. First in, Coulter on “Cash 51,” had the time but lowered three jumps on course to finish fourth. Coe and “Combina” again did not touch a rail, but exceeded the time allowed for a score of two time faults, which ended up second. Spadone also went beyond the allotted time and hit the final jump for six total faults and third for the night. Determined to not have a time fault, Coe returned on “Baronez” and jumped double clean to clench the win. The excitement didn’t end there. Throngs of fans lined up at the autograph table directly after the event. Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and her husband Markus Beerbaum joined the group of tonight’s top riders in penning their names on autograph sheets galore.

Hang your style So far, suspenders seemed to be a thing reserved for Wall Street, or even just Fleet St. but they are a sure way of looking hip. People will assume that you are some chic old world foreigner, too cool for belts; and, most probably, they will be right. Although they have been around since

the First World War, suspenders have made an amazing comeback. They are extremely useful in any outfit where a neat look is essential. They help to hold the front button and fly of the trousers in place, making it easier to align them with your shirt. brooksbrothers.com

If we want to make high-quality goods we need human beings. To convince them to do a humble work we have to make that work dignified.” This is the reason why his place runs under an unbreakable honor system. Brunello Cucinelli is all about classic style mixed with modern touches, featuring great workmanship and very high quality materials. Cashmere is imported from Mongolia and then prepared by another Italian company, under the strict specifications of Cucinelli. Every season Cucinelli develops gorgeous collections of clothes and accessories, both for men

and women. Each piece exhibits the handcrafted artistry and superior workmanship that is signature of the brand, and you can be confident of buying simply the best and most flattering items in the market. Brunello Cucinelli is synonym of excellent quality, craftsmanship and creativity. Inspired by philosopher and architects alike, Cucinelli believes it is important to rediscover beauty and making every design a piece of architecture and poetry. For the designer, whose garments are sold in 29 dedicated stores in places like New York, Paris, Beverly Hills, London, Saint Tropez and the Hamptons and in high-end department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman, success is just part of the objective. Beauty is the ultimate aim.

Colorful cashmere garments are Brunello’s signature design. Cucinelli has become one of the best-known manufacturers of cashmere garments and is one of the first Italian designers to use dyed cashmere with bright colors. While aiming for very high-end customers, Brunello is also recognized for being an ethical businessman with human values. “Work, which is considered an expression of a person’s value, also becomes a part of one’s spirituality and achieves the higher aim of the Supreme Good,” says Brunello. The designer strives to improve the human life conditions through modern capitalism were profit is used to do good. He discovered his call by the age of 15, when his father left his job as a farmer and was forced to accept to work in a factory. Times were hard for him and his family during those years, but Brunello faced changes with a great attitude and this left a mark in his heart: “My father came home from the factory with tears in his eyes and I resolved that whatever I would do with my life it would be an attempt to make work more human,” he said. Cucinelli’s factory, located in an old town in Umbria, is always busy but humanitarian labor conditions are not forgotten. Lunch breaks are generous and the only rules pasted on the walls are quotes from philosophers and writers. Brunello considers a priority to encourage and stimulate his workers on a daily basis. indulge in this dark pleasure

There are countless miracle lotions and moisturizes that promise to revitalize your skin, giving it an incredible softer and younger look and feel. Usually these products are made with chemical lab components. However, trust nature to be the one to provide us with the best “component” of all: chocolate! Just think about it: it not only is delicious and makes you happy; on top of that, it also nourishes your skin. Cacao beans have been known to the West since the Spaniards first arrived in the coast of Mexico, where the indigenous people were already enjoying the benefits of this amazing seed. It only took awhile for the world to become acquainted with chocolate. There was no aristocrat, bourgeois or country squire that could resist its beverage form. Chocolate became the new obsession of the old world. Nowadays we still crave this dark, sensual, delicious (did I mention that we are chocolate lovers?) ingredient. We could never say no to a bitter chocolate cake or to a white chocolate cylinder with coffee and mascarpone ice cream—you know, Gordon Ramsey style. Our chocolate devotion goes beyond just eating or drinking it as a hot beverage. We have mixed it in fabulous cocktails, with not so great names—you know, like the Chocolate Kiev, with vanilla vodka, or the Hot Scotch Cocoa. But now we want to propose a new way of indulging in chocolate decadence: The spa treatment. This guilt-free way of enjoying chocolate provides astounding results. Keep in mind that the scent of chocolate triggers the release of chemicals in the brain

that produce a similar feeling to that of falling in love. In addition to being a true sensory indulgence, chocolate contains over 300 different compounds capable of significant impact on one’s health and beauty. Indulging in a chocolate facial is truly a hedonistic delight. Go ahead and abandon yourself to those opium-like feelings of pleasure that will arise. It’s the perfect way to elevate a slumping mood. Get a chocolate scrub that will rid you of those dead skin cells. An exfoliation with dark chocolate will reveal a younger, smoother, healthier layer of skin. Another amazing spa treatment that is a must is a chocolate wrap. There are different kinds of wraps. Basically, this treatment begins when your body is brushed with a muddy kind of chocolate fondue mix, and then wrapped in a soft warm blanket; this enhances the effects of the antioxidants that are present in coffee, cocoa, and chocolate. Chocolate cleanses, detoxifies and refines skin texture. Its natural components exfoliate, decongest and diminish pores. The secret behind chocolate spa treatments is the powerful combination of vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and organic acids that enhances skin revitalization. Having a chocolate massage or a chocolate scrub will make you feel superb; sharing it with your friends will transform the experience into a sort of chocolate slumber party. But getting all swamped in dark chocolate is not a just girl’s activity; a relaxing chocolate treatment with your significant other would be a most sensual experience, a definite sweet treat for that special romantic occasion.

White Truffles An extraordinary delicacy

Photos: Courtesy of Taste & Glamour.

Truffles are one of the finest ingredients all over the world. This delicacy for the rich and powerful grows as an underground fungus that is harvested in the months between November and March. Gourmet connoisseurs, however, recommend to eat it right after Christmas, for they claim it tastes better at that time. Truffles are extremely difficult to find. In olden days pigs were the perfect truffle finders. These farm-animals have a highly developed sense of smell that enables them to trace the subtle aroma of this mushroom under earth. This ancient technique is still used by some growers, although some others have chosen to employ dogs trained specifi-

cally for this work. When the dog smells a truffle, it stops, sniffs the ground and with its front legs leaves a mark in the ground, just lifting the first inches of the soil. Once the dog has done its part, it is time for the collector to carefully dig and extract the truffle. After taking it, the collector has to fill the hole with the same earth that was removed, in order to guarantee that truffles will keep growing in the same site. There are many types of truffles. Of the 70 species in existence, 32 of them are indigenous of Europe. Amongst the top three truffle varieties in the world, the White Winter Truffle (Tuber Magnatum Pico) is the sole truffle that cannot be cultivated

and it can only be found in certain regions of Italy and Croatia. The prices vary every week during the three-month season, as the amount of truffles that are harvested vary tremendously. Its value in the market can reach ten times the price of the French black variety, duly giving it the epithet of “white gold,” a name that Ancient Greeks and Romans took literally: they used to pay the equivalent of the weight of the truffle in solid gold. Thanks to their delicate flavor, truffles are basic ingredients in haute cuisine. You can find a vast array of recipes that include this delicious element, but never break the golden rule about truffles: they must not get close to anything that alters or masks their natural flavor, such as garlic or strong spices. It is said that white truffles lose their magnificent flavor when they are exposed to heat. To avoid this, they are added to the dish in the last step of preparation, just seconds before it is served. Exquisite and mysterious, white truffles are a delicate homage to your palate. They can provide a delicious gourmet touch to anything: pasta, meat, and even French fries—they have the miraculous power to transform an everyday dish into something spectacular and fancy. Beware: this delicacy causes addiction.

Sarah Burton Creative Director for Alexander McQueen Sarah Burton supervises the creative direction and development of all collections of the brand, which includes women’s and men’s readyto-wear and accessories as well as the contemporary line “McQueen.” By valentina collado

Sarah has taken over his friend and mentor Alexander McQueen Sarah Burton has always admitted that it would be a very big challenge to take over the company. At first, she thought there was no way to begin such assignment—she doubted about her own talent and asked herself how could she ever fill Alexander’s shoes. The answer: Sarah could not pretend to be McQueen, so she had to take it as a challenge and go with her own ideas, paying a tribute to his heritage while keeping true to her own heart.

First show as the Creative Director for Alexander McQueen

The beginning of her fashion career When she was very young, Sarah moved to London to pursue her interest in fashion. While she studied Print Fashion at Central Saint Martins, her tutor, a friend of Lee McQueen, got her an interview for a year placement at Alexander’s label. She got the job, and joined in 1996 as an intern. After her college graduation, she returned to occupy a permanent job. She was named Head of

38 [ equlifestyle.com ]

woman’s wear in 2000 and until Lee passed away, in 2010, they worked together.

Contribution to the brand Sarah has confirmed that the label will keep true to McQueen’s spirit and essence, but she thinks that in some of the future collections there will be a more subdued drama. As a woman, she is thinking about exploiting feminine elements, with some dark and obscure notes. She aims to nurture and reinforce her bond with Lee, while she manages to create her own collections with a unique perspective.

Her admiration and eternal love for her mentor Describing her boss, mentor and working partner she refers to him as a genius: “He was such

a lovely man, and his mind never switched off… He was so important to me. You just wanted to make him happy, look after him,” she said once. “Although I felt that I protected him, now I feel that he protected me.”

Behind the Royal Wedding dress It was an honor for Burton to be asked to do the Royal Wedding dress, and she enjoyed every moment of the experience. People stated that this dress represented the best of British craftsmanship. Alexander McQueen’s designs are all about bringing contrasts, materializing wonderful and admirable clothes, combining great fabrics and lacework. In this dress the team put extra work and thought on the anatomy of the dress. Burton said the princess was one of the loveliest women she has ever met, and it was great to work with her.

Photos: Courtesy of Alexander Mc Queen.

Sarah presented her first women’s wear collection in September 2010, in Paris. While she paid homage to McQueen’s dramatic aesthetic, she also added her own fresh, feminine take. In this collection we were able to see McQueen’s elements but with a new and original statement. “You always have to stand behind your work,” McQueen used to tell her. For future collections Sarah has said that she plans to leave her personal mark in relation to the craftsmanship of the designs.

Joël Robuchon is one of the most famous chefs around the world, and one of the greatest. He is the mind behind excellent restaurants in numerous countries, but his talent is not limited to the kitchen: he is also an expert in cuisine business. It is no wonder why the Gault Millau guide named him chef of the century in 1989, and why Robuchon has become the most Michelin-starred chef on the planet, with an unprecedented total of 18 stars. That breaks down to two three-star restaurants (in Las Vegas and Tokyo); four two-star restaurants (two in Paris, one in Monte Carlo and one in Tokyo); and four one-star restaurants (in Las Vegas, London, New York and Tokyo). Six years after the legendary Joël Robuchon restaurant at the Hôtel du Parc closed its doors, the chef that had left the gastronomic scene for an early retirement opened a small venue in the City of Lights called L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon. With an innovative configuration that breaks the

traditional separation between kitchen and diner, L’Atelier is a cutting edge, contemporary and casual style restaurant, that perfectly presents an innovative menu, filled with creations that emphasize a triad of flavors without being arrogant. Today there are venues of L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon spread all around the world. The New York version of L’Atelier, which opened in 2006, is located within the beautiful Four Seasons Hotel New York. To call it a car is a serious understatement. It is a rocket meant to destroy automotive records. Those lucky enough to have experienced it behind the wheel cannot stop talking about it. Their conversation always starts with “You have no idea…” and that is as accurate as it will get when it comes to describing this particular vehicle.

With echoes of the Bugatti Veyron’s sexy curves, the Parmigiani Bugatti Super Sport watch resembles the renowned design of the company, beginning with the shade of orange used on the watch hands, indexes and power reserve.

62 [ equlifestyle.com ]

The Bugatti Veyron SuperSport has set a new production car land speed record, hitting 267 mph at VW’s EhraLessien proving ground. Off course, it might be irrelevant for us to mention this, but that is obscenely, absurdly fast. To set the production speed record is impressive. To smash it by 11 mph is astonishing. But then again, the Veyron SuperSport is an astonishing car. Effectively the final iteration of the Veyron, it shares the same 8.0-litre, 16-cylinder engine, but with larger turbos

and bigger intercoolers to push power up to 1,183 bhp, a jump of 196 bhp. Torque increases from 921 lb ft to 1,106 lb ft. It’s lighter than the standard Veyron too: that black’n’orange skin is constructed solely from carbon fiber, saving around 100 lb. The Super Sport gets a stiffer suspension, aiding high-speed stability and allowing a lateral acceleration of 1.4 g. Other changes the Veyron Super Sport will see are a slightly more streamlined look. Air intakes will now be integrated into the Super Sport’s

The Super Sport will hit 62mph in the same 2.5 seconds as the standard Veyron, but its 0-124 mph and 0-186 mph times are reduced to 7.3 seconds and 15.0 seconds. (No comments needed.) Production is to begin fall of 2011 and orders have been taken. This car will only be available to some of the wealthiest the world has to offer, the rest of us can still “ogle and ogle over the mastery it has on top of almost any other car on this planet.

Ferrari 458 Italia

While it is true that every Ferrari is innovative by definition, it is equally true that in the course of the Prancing Horse’s history, certain cars have marked a genuine departure from the current range. This is very much the case with the Ferrari 458 Italia.

64 [ equlifestyle.com ]

The Ferrari 458 Italia is a completely new car from every point of view: engine, design, aerodynamics, handling, instrumentation and ergonomics, just to name a few. The new model is a synthesis of style, creative flair, passion and cutting-edge technology, echoing some of the characteristics which Italy, as a nation, is well known for. This is the reason why Ferrari chose to add the name of its homeland to the traditional figure representing the displacement and number of cylinders. A two-seater berlinetta, the Ferrari 458 Italia benefits hugely from the company’s Formula 1 experience. This is particularly evident in the speed and precision with which the car responds to driver inputs and in the attention focused on reducing internal friction in the engine for lower fuel consumption than the F430, despite the fact that both overall displacement and power have increased. The 458 Italia features an innova-

tive driving environment with a new kind of steering wheel and dashboard that is the direct result of racing practice. Once again, input from Michael Schumacher—who was involved from the very start of the 458 Italia project—and played an invaluable part in its making and manufacture.

Every Ferrari is the result of an uncompromising design approach that integrates styling and aerodynamic requirements. The Pininfarina design features compact, aerodynamic lines, underscoring the concepts of performance-oriented efficiency that inspired the project.

Brabus SLS 700 Biturbo Brabus has unveiled the 700hp

BiTurbo performance package for the Mercedes SLS AMG at the Geneva Motor Show. As the name implies, the new Brabus creation features two turbos attached to the usual Mercedes SLS 6.2-litre V8. In an attempt to eliminate turbo lag, Brabus has fitted a B63 bi-turbo system where there is both a left- and a right turning turbo, one for each side of the engine. Allied to Brabus’s own intercooler, dual-flow intake manifolds and high performance air filters, the Biturbo produces 690 bhp (or 700 hp, again as the name suggests). A titanium exhaust also saves 24 lb from the stand system. Thanks to this and a torque peak of 626 lb. ft., the Brabus is reported to reach a top speed of 213 mph, passing 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and 124 mph in just 10.2. Brabus says the entire body was subjected to aerodynamic tunnel tests to ensure the car is stable at high speeds. The front spoiler, the covers for the air inlets, the gills, the rear spoiler and the diffuser are all made

from carbon-fiber and contrast the silver paint of the 700 Biturbo. Brabus also added carbon side skirts fitted with air vents for the rear brakes. Other changes include a new titanium exhaust system and a new suspension that lowers ride height by up to 30 millimeters (1.2 in.) and has a “Ride Control” function, altering the damping according to needs. Inside, the German supercar can be fitted with matte or shiny carbon-fiber elements of any color, matte anodized aluminium pedals and foot rests, as well as an ergonomically shaped sport steering wheel. The interior has also been treated to a number of bespoke Brabus touches, such as a 400 km/h speedo cluster and a new Brabus sports steering wheel. There’s also a complete bespoke Brabus cross-stitched leather interior with matching dashboard highlights.

In an attempt to eliminate turbo lag, Brabus has fitted a B63 bi-turbo system where there is both a left- and a right turning turbo, one for each side of the engine. This is as opposed to the typical layout for V-engines of two right-turning turbochargers, which affects throttle response.

What could possibly be better than a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing? A Brabus-tuned model, of course. It’s called the Brabus 700 BiTurbo.

n its fifth year, Oi Athina Onassis Horse Show established itself as the largest equestrian event in Latin America boasting entertainment and sports. OiAOHS received approximately 15 thousand people during its three days. We found many surprises: a convenience area with Fashion Mall shops, a Manekineko restaurant, and an exclusive collection designed by Osklen’s Oskar Metsavaht and Oi AOHS’s shirts designed by fashion designer Ricardo Almeida. Grand Prize’s medals and the trophy, this year were designed by Jack Vartanian, who also created an exclusive piece of jewelry inspired by a horse from the event. With such high prizes it was only natural that several international equestrianism stars disputed in jumping, for the first time at OiAOHS, at the Brazilian Equestrianism Society in Rio de Janeiro. One of the biggest stars among the foreigners was Ludger Beerbaum, from Germany, who has participated at Oi Athina Onassis Horse Show during the last years, has won four Olympic gold medals and is considered one of the best riders of all times. Brazilian equestrianism was also well represented with riders such as Rodrigo Pessoa, Olympic champion, world champion and World’s Cup three time winner, and Álvaro Affonso de Miranda Neto, best known as Doda, that has won two bronze Olympic medals.

Some of the best duos in the world competed from Friday, September 2nd to Sunday, September 4th, at Oi Athina Onassis Horse Show, the largest equestrian event in Brazil. More than 114 riders representing 21 countries were part of this event—the second to last round of the Global Champions Tour 2011 season—that awarded 1.3 million euros. by ALEJANDRO M. GARCÍA. FOTOS por Stefano Grasso/GCT.

A GREAT NIGHT FOR HOLLAND The last night of Oi Athina Onassis Horse Show was great for Gerco Schröder from Holland. Riding the horse “Eurocommerce London,” the rider was the champion of Oi’s Grand Prize, with 1,60m obstacles, and the 9th round of the Global Champions Tour (GCT). The Dutch rider was the only one able to complete both courses perfectly out of the 41 duos competing, and with a time of 72.02s was the big winner of Oi’s GP, which awarded 1.000.000 in prizes, the largest amount in a single round in equestrianism’s history. Gerco also took home the trophy designed by Jack Vartanian and the gold medal. “The course was very difficult, especially the first and I am very happy with my victory. I was unsure of my horse’s potential but after today I have no doubt that I can take it to the Olympic Games. The organization of the event was great. Everything was wonderful,” declared the Dutch Olympic rider. Second place was taken by Edwina Alexander and “Cevo Itot du Chatêau,” from Australia. They completed the course with one fault and a time of 64.87s. She expanded GCT’s leadership with 238 points and is getting closer to 2011’s title. “My season has been wonderful and I can’t thank my horse and team enough,” exclaimed happy Edwina. “With this result I am a lot closer to the title,” she added. In third place came Philipp Weishaupt on “Monte Bellini,” with a time of 67.75s and one fault. The Olympic champion, Rodrigo Pessoa, that had finished the first turn first made a fault in the second and finished in fourth place. “I knew it was a very difficult course. My horse was perfect the first time around, but in the second we made a fault. It is a pity we were not in the playoffs, but that is how it is. Anyways, I am happy my horse jumped very well,” stated Rodrigo Pessoa.

Doda Miranda, the host of the event, committed two faults in the first turn and made a clean course in the second. In 10th place at the GP, the Olympic champion that was in the fifth position at GCT’s rank is now in third with 194 points. He is fighting to make top three at GCT’s final that will take place November 24th to 27th in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

A TOTAL SUCCESS Oi Athina Onassis Horse Show was once again a great success displaying both entertainment and sports. The creators of the event, Doda Miranda and Athina Onassis Miranda together with Aktuell Communications and Atto Sports crew, were praised by everyone. Atto Sport’s president, André Beck spoke about this event: “For sure this was the Best Oi Athina Onassis Horse Show of all. In this fifth year we were able to use everything that we have learned from the previous years. The audience interacted much more with the event. The end result was very positive and this motivates us to make an event better event in 2012,” said Beck. During an intermission it was announced that the Brazilian team will compete in the Pan American Games in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico in October. The jumping team will include Rodrigo Pessoa, Doda Miranda, Bernardo Alves, Karina Johhanpeter and César Almeida. Latitude Distinctive Style

The motor yacht Latitude was launched in April 2008. Designed by Stefano Natucci, the graceful mega yacht Latitude offers a combination of both the finest in engineering and interior design. While art deco in its various guises seems to be virtually de rigueur for a yacht interior these days, designer Mauro Izzo managed to bring to it his own personal signature and a fresh outlook. The elegant décor of this luxury charter yacht reproduces the typical atmosphere of the 1930’s, with a completely art deco appearance well combined with modern amenities. There is a well-equipped kitchen on the main deck, rich bathrooms, shining engine rooms and a spacious garage with the capacity for two tenders and jet skis. Situated on the lower deck, there is a wine cellar, a laundry and baggage room. But it is in the main saloon where the magical mood is most noticeable. There are

intimate conversation corners and convivial spaces penetrated by gold shafts of light coming from an unexpected skylight. Two interior elements recall both the elegance and the size of the old steam liners. The main staircase, which is lined with engraved mirrors and encircles an elevator connecting the tank level with the sun deck, would not look out of place aboard a much larger yacht. And the wheelhouse is based on the functional layout common to commercial ships, with a walkway in front of the helm and instrument console. A second saloon sits on the upper deck with a playing table, conversation area, and bar. A sliding door to the outside cleverly allows the interior and exterior areas to blend into one. The owner’s suite on the main deck incorporates the finest in technology, style, and creativity with a balcony and panoramic view of the ocean.

Connected and perfectly synchronized with the oscillating weight, the lotus flower of this Perrelet timepiece generates additional energy for the winding mechanism. Let the sea wind up your watch.

The objective of Mauro Izzo, the interior decorator of the shipyard, was to create a special and refined atmosphere that would evocate the ambiance and grandeur of the transatlantic ocean liners of the 1920’s and 1930’s.

92’ Duchessa

Perfection of luxury and comfort

Riva continues its adventure in the megayacht segment, with a refined model: 92’ Duchessa. Curved, racy lines harmoniously design the profile of this yacht that encloses all the elegance of Riva style in all of her 28 majestic meters. The chromatic balance between warm shades of black American walnut, embellished with handsewn leather inserts used for the furniture and bulkheads, and the white varnished wood of the flooring, replaced with white stone in marble powder in the dining area, makes this environment both welcoming and comfortable. The wide master cabin features a walk-in wardrobe and vanity unit, and is well-lit by two large, rectangular windows fitted on either side. The two twin guest cabins are set amidships and the windows ensure they are well-lit, whilst the towards bow VIP cabin is also full beam, almost making it another master cabin. The classical cockpit features a large teak table that can seat up to eight,

guests thanks to a comfortable sofa and four foldable chairs. An elegant stairway to the right provides easy access to the flybridge. A second, smaller living-room has been created at bow, where a teak table with a six-seater sofa and the sundeck are located. A brand new feature on this Riva model: the flybridge is surmounted by a fiberglass hard top, whose sharp line inclined towards bow gives continuity to the yacht’s general profile, making her more aerodynamic and elegant. A centrally-fitted Jacuzzi, which can be replaced by a smart mobile bar in the optional version, separates the flybridge from the sundeck. Another breathtaking feature of this particular model is the garage that can house a jet-ski. When lowered, a chaise-longue on runners can be placed inside the garage, creating another area for relaxation, suspended directly over the water.

The design collaboration is for Veuve Clicquot’s champagne (prestige cuvee) called La Grande Dame, which includes an extraordinary accessory for Riva boats: a limited edition cruise bag that contains a bottle and two champagne flutes.

Azimut

Glamorous marine odyssey Azimut 38 is an extremely easy to handle boat, environmentally friendly, easy to maintain while, at the same time, conveying the style, elegance and comfort that distinguishes an Azimut yacht. We are talking about livability guaranteed at maximum level in a distribution that takes advantage of every centimeter of space. A careful study of the layout and full CAD design have helped to optimize the functionality of every single detail ranging from the flybridge—with a sun pad and sofa area with table—to numerous storage areas in various parts of the yacht such as the spacious wardrobes in the master cabin and the special area for storing the cockpit seats. In the dinette on the main deck, a careful study of the layout has guaranteed maximum comfort even when an extra bed inside the sofa is pulled out for guests when needed. For all these reasons, when you think of a

12-meter yacht that can offer the maximum by using the minimum, an Azimut 38 naturally comes to mind. Large glass windows open onto the main deck and below deck, where the master cabin has side windows as well as the hatch, whereas the VIP cabin, in the center of the boat, looks out onto the sea through two scenic windows. The decor gives an idea of freshness with predominantly light colors and natural fabrics, meanwhile pickled oak, leather and steel are predominant. Measures to reduce environmental impact range from the use of thermostatic mixers to avoid wasting energy; to the simplest of ideas, such as the use of a concealed hatchway to create natural ventilation for the living area.

Take along Missoni’s unmistakeable Zig Zag pattern hat and towels to your next fabulous yacht trip.

Photos: Courtesy of Azimut Yachts and Missoni

It is not the length of a yacht that makes it special but its ability to meet the needs of its yachtsman. It is for this very reason that the Azimut 38 has been created.

McLaren’s two-wheeled racer The fastest performance bicycle in the world with carbon fiber technology is now on the market. McLaren team, specialized in formula-1 racing cars, has worked over four years developing this marvel, and as a result has created this amazing machine called the Venge. The team designed the Venge using the latest technology, aided by digital design tools and wind tunnel tests. They tried to bring out the importance of the material and the analysis it takes to create something so outrageous. The Venge frame, designed by the experts, managed to make the bike weight under two pounds. The tubing is aerodynamically optimized and cabling runs internally, so once you get your tight bike suit and teardrop helmet on, the air won’t know what hit it. The art carbon layering technique and the frame of the bike weighs only 930 grams. Once the seat, handlebars and the rest of accessories are added, the bike comes to about 4.5 pounds—a normal bike lock weights almost the same! The seat is adjustable and the cables are all routed through the frame. A computer cut the carbon sheets that make up the frame of the bike; this optimized and improved the efficiency of the bike 10 to 15 percent, more that anything previously seen in the cycling world. The S/Works + McLaren Venge is the first Specialized bike to achieve the winning formula of weight, stiffness and aero-dynamics. The unique partnership between Specialized and McLaren brought the advanced materials and design that has been used to create their F1 winning racecars into the world of race bikes. The bike was created to be a record-breaker and it is in fact called the fastest complete performance bike in the world. The Venge was launched in March this year and won its first race just after coming out,

Marc Jacobs

Head designer of Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs has always been a rebel for the critics, and a visionary for his fans. He has always done what he wants to, because he thinks that the best only comes when you choose to follow your instincts. By valentina collado Designing for two brands For Jacobs each house is absolutely different. Even though the same person commands the teams, the way creativity is manifested is totally different. He is a New Yorker, he was born and raised in the city, so he thinks that he has a more personal connection with the team from New York, he feels more related to their energy and attitude. (After all it is his label, so he has more autonomy and, of course, authority!) The contrast is provided by Paris, which he has described as a fantasy. Vuitton works with a more structured basis, so Jacobs goes as far as the show, and then everything lies in somebody else’s hands.

Different women Each name beckons different women, with their own characteristics and signature style. While the Marc Jacobs woman is always the coolest wallflower in the room, Vuitton’s femme is extroverted, exhuberant and wants to be noticed. Vuitton’s monogram, glamorous and beautiful, cries luxury and style with every step.

Life as a designer Marc Jacobs has always been very grateful for loving his profession. He is a designer that believes in what he does, creates things with integrity and stands by them. Marc does everything with design sense and with passion. He hates when people think that putting their name on a piece of clothing will make these pieces sell out. It seems that no one can figure out what is going on in Marc’s mind; he is defiant and does things to push people’s buttons. He likes challenges; he believes that you have to take chances. Marc never over-thinks whether people will love or hate something. He thinks that it’s better to just get on with it. The desire to create is his main passion.

work with it! Jacob’s team works as a unit, they do things with their guts and do not stop to think if the collection will be a success… they just hope that the outcome will be wonderful and will look good in sales numbers. When Marc talks about design, he always does it in team terms. He has always felt like he is just a small part of a great whole, not only the head.

The ideal woman

Teamwork is essential For Jacobs, to be a team player is to be a good babysitter, a good father, and a good partner. You have to be sensitive and learn how to work with others. It is important to know that everyone has an ego—it is just the human condition—, and learn how to

Marc is interested in women that are true to their individuality. His main target are those who do not try to be anything else other than who they really are. He does not focus on only one specific type of woman, but many. Many things inspire him while creating a collection: he designs knowing that

somewhere in the world there is a woman who is going to love wearing whatever he creates. Period.

Important elements in his collections “It’s all about instinct,” says Jacobs. He does not describe himself as scientist that can just sit down thinking, “What will women wear this season? What will people respond to?” Although sometimes he feels clueless about what people desire, Jacobs always wants to surprise his public with something severe and strict, and, at the same time, something that can bring joy and humor them. With every collection one thing remains clear: Marc Jacobs is a very passionate designer who loves clothes and life.

world cup

The FEI World Cup Final, an indoor competition held in April each year, is the single most important annual International Championship in equestrian sport. Other equestrian events at this level, the Olympics and the World Championships, occur every four years. The series, which began in 1978, has fourteen leagues in six continents. Approximately 50 riders qualify annually to compete for the highly sought after title of World Cup Champion. Held at fabulous locations all over the world, the 2012 FEI World Cup Final will be in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, at the Indoor Brabant from April 19-22, 2012. Blenheim EquiSports hosts FEI World Cup Qualifying Grand Prix classes in three different locations - Del Mar, San Juan Capistrano and Las Vegas.

WHO IS THE FEI? Left : Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Shutterfly at the 2009 Rolex FEI World Cup Finals in Las Vegas.

86 [ equlifestyle.com ]

The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), founded in 1921, is the international governing body for equestrian sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The sole controlling authority for all international events in many disciplines including show jumping, the FEI establishes the regulations and approves

equestrian programs at Championships, Continental and Regional Games as well as the Olympic Games.

FEI VALUES 1. Fairness and Equality: Equestrianism is one of the very few sports where men and women share the same podium and compete on equal terms up to and including Olympic level. 2. Complicity with the Animal: It is the only sport that involves two athletes, the horse and rider. It is the relationship of confidence and respect that is built up between them, that makes the sport so exceptional. 3. Respect for the Environment: Equestrianism is also very much concerned with the conservation of the environment. It was one of the first international sports federations to establish a Code of Conduct towards the Environment. 4. Respect for the Horse: Since the FEI was formed, it has concerned itself relentlessly with the welfare of the horse. In 1991 the FEI adopted a Code of Conduct, which states as follows: “...at all times the welfare of the horse must be paramount and must never be subordinated to competitive or commercial influences.”

Photos: Tish Quirk (left), CapturedMomentPhoto.com (right).

WHAT IS THE WORLD CUP?

HOW THE TRACK TURNS

HOW BIG AND WIDE ARE THESE JUMPS?

• Walking the course: Before the class begins, each rider has an opportunity to walk the course on foot. They will memorize the order of the jumps, determine how many horse strides to take in between jumps and finalize their plan. They consider each step, each corner and each line they will take, often called the ‘track’. Riders also determine their jump-off plan during the course walk. • Time allowed: The course designer establishes the time allowed. If a rider exceeds the time allowed, he/she will incur time faults. In an FEI class one time fault is added to the score for every four seconds over the time allowed. • Course designer: A very important and technical role, the course designer creates the placement of each jump, the distances between the jumps and the order in which the course will be jumped. Each ‘track’ or course design is unique and has a variety of questions that the rider has to answer without fault. These questions include distance challenges, turns, height, width and more. • Lowering the height of a jump: For each fence lowered, a four fault penalty is added to the score. Touches or rubs don’t count as faults, only a knockdown. • Refusing a jump: If a horse refuses to jump, four faults are incurred. If there are two refusals on course, the horse and rider are immediately eliminated. • Fall of horse or rider: Also constitutes elimination. • A clean round: When a horse and rider jump the course without incurring any penalties within the allotted time allowed, they are ‘clean’. If more than one horse is clean, they compete for the win in the jump-off. • Jump off: All riders who are clean in the first round have the opportunity to return for the jump off. Also created by the course designer, the jumps are raised and the course adjusted for this second round. The goal is to be both fast and clean. The rider who has the least number of faults in the fastest time is the winner.

Jump height cannot exceed 1.60m (5’3”). The spread should be proportionate to the height and not more than 2m (6’7”).

HOW WORLD CUP POINTS ARE EARNED Points are awarded to the top 16 places in the class according to the scale below. If a rider has more than one horse, the first horse they compete on is their World Cup mount for this competition. 1st - 20 pts. 5th - 12 pts. 9th - 8 pts. 13th - 4 pts. nd th th 2 - 17 pts. 6 - 11 pts. 10 - 7 pts. 14th - 3 pts. rd th th 3 - 15 pts. 7 - 10 pts. 11 - 6 pts. 15th - 2 pts. th th th 4 - 13 pts. 8 - 9 pts. 12 - 5 pts. 16th - 1 pts.

WHICH COUNTRIES HAVE WON? Since the first World Cup Final in 1979, 21 riders from nine countries have won the prestigious title: United States (USA) - 6 riders Germany (GER) - 4 riders Austria (AUT) - 2 riders Canada (CAN) - 2 riders Great Britain (GBR) - 2 riders Switzerland (SUI) - 2 riders Brazil (BRA) - 1 riders France (FRA) - 1 riders Netherlands (NED) - 1 riders

oday when we mention social change, we often think about social media, such as Facebook or Twitter. Although these entities have changed us socially, JustWorld International is reaching out to change the world for the better. “Bringing Equestrians Together for a Just World” is the hallmark of JustWorld International, a non-for-profit humanitarian organization that supports life-changing education and nutrition programs for some of the world’s most needy children. Riders and horse shows, including the Las Vegas National, are joining the movement to help others. Founded in 2003 by former grand prix rider Jessica Newman, JustWorld International acts as a catalyst for positive change in the developing world by working with local partner organizations to provide basic education, nutrition, health, hygiene, and vocational programs for children in impoverished communities in Honduras, Cambodia, Guatemala, and Brazil. JustWorld raises funds throughout the international equestrian world, from individuals to partner horse shows to corporate sponsors. Unique in its origins in the international show jumping community, JustWorld focuses on not only raising funds through horse show events but also on developing programs that allow riders to become compassionate and generous global citizens. Over the last seven years, the organization has developed a community of active donors and volunteers who make annual pledges of “time, talent, or treasure” as JustWorld Ambassadors. Currently, there are more than 400 professional, junior, and amateur Rider Ambassadors representing 35 different countries. JustWorld Rider Ambassadors and donors are encouraged to visit the projects and more than 120 donors have done so. The Las Vegas National and many other horse shows participate by holding fundraising events, exhibitor parties, Calcuttas, and special classes; donating parking fees and portions of entry fees; and hosting signature JustWorld Horseless Horse Shows. The JustWorld Horseless Horse Shows include younger children as participants, introducing them to charitable events as “Kids Helping Kids.” Proceeds from JustWorld events help to develop long-term, sustainable education projects, targeting communities where local organizations have evolved to help children who often fall beyond the reach of government and large-scale humanitarian programs. JustWorld and its partners focus on creating and maintaining educational and vocational programs that will begin to equip the children for future lives of self-sufficiency, while providing health care, food programs, and clean water to immediately improve their daily lives.

Newman’s equestrian connections are especially beneficial to forming relationships with local, grassroots organizations. By helping to circumvent confrontation with some of the political unrest present in the countries where JustWorld gathers support, Newman explains “We create reciprocal partnerships with our local establishments and all funding is monitored very carefully according to criteria mandated by international nonprofits. This way, we avoid a lot of the corruption in developing countries.” Newman was a guest at the FEI General Assembly, where she had an opportunity to spread the word about JustWorld to the heads of national federations from around the world. Since JustWorld has garnered official partnerships with Equine Canada (the Canadian national federation) and the European Equestrian Federation. Now that national federations are signing on and JustWorld is expanding, Newman notes, “Within the next five years, I hope to see JustWorld shows in every country where there is competitive horseback riding.” JustWorld International is a recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organization in the United States and a registered Association 1901 in France. Local branches have also been established in Mexico and Honduras. JustWorld International has no political or religious affiliation. For more please go to: http://www.justworldinternational.org/

10. Greens and camel tones fit in perfectly with the ambiance, and are the trend colors of the season; plus, no one will notice if you get a little muddy.
