Little Black Dress
Since chanel introduced the “Little Black Dress” back in 1926, it has become synonymous with chic. The French designer believed fashion should be functional as well as trendy. Her LBD was designed as a fashion ideal garment; it was perfectly simple, yet totally sexy. When Coco released her first LBD, it was a slash-necked, short silk dress with only diagonal pin-tucks as decoration. American Vogue called it the “Ford,” because just like Henry Ford’s Model-T car, the LBD was an instant hit, widely available, though only in black. Many years later, when Hubert de Givenchy designed the iconic LBD worn by Audrey Hepburn in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, this outfit became a must have in every women’s closet. Even though to modern eyes, Chanel’s original LDB may seem rather plain compared to the glamorous Givenchy style, it was her LBD
design the one that transformed black from a mourning color to an archetype of high fashion. The popularity of the LBD is due to the sum of all its qualities, but we must give the color black much of the credit for the timeless quality of this garment. Unlike other colors, black is never dated or out of fashion. Everyone knows that black is fabulously slimming, but the real reason the LBD is a timeless wardrobe essential for every woman is because it can be dressed up or down in a pinch. A simple black cocktail dress can be turned into an evening dress with diamond accessories, stilettos, and long gloves; or, when combined with a black suit jacket, small accessories, and simple pumps, the same dress can be worn for a daytime business meeting. Every woman needs a structured LBD that can go from day to night and lend itself as a canvas to accessories. The first step to finding the
perfect LBD is to identify your body type in order to understand what looks good on you. Keep in mind that while mini- and maxi-dresses go in and out of style, the most enduring, universally flattering and appropriate hemline is just above or just below the knee. The perfect LBD does not contain Lycra or spandex; while lightweight stretchy knits definitely have their place in your closet—in your yoga pants—they won’t stand the test of time or work in as many occasions as a medium-weight, structured little black dress. Since the LBD is a fashion investment, look for luxurious materials like wool, cashmere, silk or linen. Make sure the LBD you chose is one that fits your personality. This wonderful outfit can be as retro, edgy, romantic, bohemian, sophisticated or sexy, as you are. Wearing a LBD it is all about the finishing touches.

GETTING READY FOR A POLO MATCH
Photos: Courtesy of Asprey Polo.
POLO IS A RISKY SPORT. The ball is hit so hard that it will fly at an average speed of 110 miles per hour. It moves so fast that it’s almost impossible to see it. As a polo player you must stay at a gallop, get your polo pony in line with the ball, and either pass it ahead to a teammate, or carry the ball down the field for an attempt at goal. It is as easy as... I do not know: to build a power generator in your home. However if you are a polo rooky here is a guide of what equipment you will need for a match. Choose your team jersey and get some polo jeans, pants or britches. It does not matter if you’re playing with your lifetime buddy or if you are trying to defeat Adolfo Cambiaso or Nacho Figueras, all polo players should wear a helmet with a protective face mask in addition to goggles. Believe me, you do not want to get hit by the ball! For this equipment we sugest you to go to La Dolfina. You will also need boots. Most polo riding boots are brown leather for a practical reason: black boot polish would stain the white polo breeches during a game. Polo boots also provide a surface to grip the sides of the horse. When buying polo boots, try them on first, and select a pair that is comfortable, particularly around the ankle area. Check out the ones from Asprey Polo. Also seek for gloves, these will provide you with a secure grip to improve your performance. For safety you must wear knee pads. These come in a wide range of styles and quality. Find a pair that is comfortable. The Argentinean brand La Martina has a collection made with high quality leather, with a classical style, and has also releaed high technology handcrafted knee pads. Now that you’re fully dressed it is time to look for a mallet. Polo mallets range in size from 49 to 54 inches in length. The specific mallet length is usually on the head of the polo mallet. Mallet heads are available in a variety of weights and shapes, this enables you to hit the ball in different ways. You got your clothes and you got your mallet, but there are a couple of things your missing: you need a whip, spurs, a saddle, bridles, brits, a head collar, and, of course a polo pony. Are up for the match?

Beach is always in You must get ready for this upcoming vacation season. It is important to wear the right swimsuit especially this season. By finding the right suit you can show off your perfectly toned figure and can cover up the flaws if you have any. Be intelligent and select the right, fitted one
that compliments your body and style. It’s better if they are not too big, so you can avoid those horrible sun marks. If you go for shiny colors your tan will be enhanced as if by magic. Have fun and explore the windy waves of the tropical adventure. millyny.com

Bose Quietcomfort 15. Over 20 years ago Bose introduced the noise reduction technology into headphones that were used on airplanes; since then, this enterprise has kept improving their products with major technological advances. With the Quietcomfort 15 headphones, noise reduction is better than ever, thanks to the technological advancements of noise reduction across a wider range of frequencies. These innovations also features microphones both inside and outside each earcup, in order to better sense and reduce the surrounding sounds. Moreover, they also feature an Active equalization that electronically tunes the headphones frequency response, enabling outstanding audio performance. The Importance of a Stone
Photo: Courtesy Carolina Herrera.
big girls need big diamonds
DiamonDs are appreciateD and admired by almost everybody on the planet. They can be worn as personal ornaments or as tools in many industries. They are often the gems chosen to commemorate special events in people’s lives like engagements, big successes, anniversaries, and more! If you want to buy one for yourself or as a gift for someone special, you could probably use the following diamond-ring shopping guidelines. First and foremost, when evaluating a piece, use the popular Four C’s method, explained below. Aside from these four important factors though, you also need to take a look at the setting. Usually, precious metals like gold, silver, or platinum are the first choice. Just get the style that fits your taste: contemporary, antique, exotic, Celtic. Now here are the four C’s that you have to take into account when purchasing a diamond of superlative beauty:
1. Cut. It refers to the facet proportions on the surface of a diamond. More than any other factor, the precision of these facets determines the beauty of the stone. However, there is a sacrifice. When a stone is cut to maximize brilliance, dispersion and scintillation, it usually loses size. Conversely, when cut for size, the diamond usually loses brilliance, dispersion and scintillation. 2. Color. The color grade of a diamond, although often misleading, is key for evaluating the quality of a stone. This is because the ideal engagement diamond is characterized by a lack of color. That is to say, it is clear to the point of being colorless or nearly colorless. The colored tinting found in most diamonds is caused by minute impurities within the stone. The untrained eye is incapable of making the color evaluations that can affect the value of a stone by thousands of dollars. The color of each diamond is determined by comparing it to authenticated “master diamonds.” Each stone is then
color-graded to a precise scale from “D” (colorless) to “Z” (saturated). 3. Clarity. Because diamonds form deep within the earth, under extreme heat and pressure, they often contain unique birthmarks, either internal (inclusions) or external (blemishes). Diamond clarity refers to the absence of these inclusions and blemishes. Diamonds without these birthmarks are rare, and rarity affects the value of a diamond. 4. Carat weight. The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. One carat equals 0.200 grams. Carat weight alone does not determine value. Two stones of equal weight can vary widely in price because of quality differences. In fact, a smaller diamond may actually be more beautiful than a larger stone with inferior cut, clarity, color or presence. So now that you know everything about diamonds, make sure the one you choose, fulfill all your expectations and enjoy!

the trend of wearing silk pants and shirt— instead of a nightgown—caught on. But for women it was very different. Night fashion for women can be traced to the early Middle Ages. The chemise, a medium length tunic worn by many of the ancient cultures in the Middle East, was probably the first nightwear worn by women. It was in the 18th century, when French people came up with the negligee, but it was not the sexy garment of today. It was a long, heavy and practical gown used to keep warm during the winter. In the 19th century females started wearing nightgowns, which were the natural evolution of the chemise. Women did not wear two-piece pajamas until the 50’s, when women were started wearing pants more often. Although during this time, children of both genders wore pj’s to bed, it was until the late 60’s that pajamas suits made especially for women were released. Nowadays you can choose from a wide variety of colors, fabrics and textures. Do not forget: you must look for nightwear that makes you feel comfy and sexy, this way you will reflect your style and character, even in your dreams.

its own interesting history. Even though pajamas were widely appreciated during the Ottoman Empire, where really wide pajama pants were worn to keep the legs warm, their real origin can be traced back to India. As a part of the traditional Indian garment this kind of pant were named as Peyjama, which is the Persian word for leg garment— So, you were right, there is a slight similarity between your pj’s and Indian cloths. Nowadays pajamas have become a very popular garment, this wouldn’t have happened without the British East India Company. When India’s territories were under the sovereignty of the British Crown, English settlers adopted this comfortable garment. Soon it was brought to England. It was popularized as a nightwear worn only by the royalty and the aristocrats, who transformed it into a plush version of the pajama that looked like a sleepwear gown. Before the pajamas arrived to the Western world, men used to sleep with huge nightshirts, but it wasn’t until the early 20th century when

a woman without boundaries who became a role model, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883–1971) deserves special recognition. Her life is the sto-
ry of one of the most powerful and fascinating women entrepreneurs. A fighter by nature, Coco was an orphan that became an haute couture designer. She lost her mother when she was twelve years old, and one week later her father abandoned her. Until she was seventeen in 1900, Gabrielle Chanel was educated at a convent orphanage ran by nuns. The difficulties of her early life inspired her to pursue a radically different lifestyle, first on the stage, where she was given the nickname “Coco,” then as a milliner and finally as an outstanding fashion designer. She also made a groundbreaking entrance into the field of perfumery. Coco loved fragrance and her sense of smell was extraordinary. She believed that the droplets of perfume applied behind the ear, on the back of a wrist and in the hollow of a shoulder, were a must for any elegant woman. Why was her first perfume named N°5? Nobody really knows. Some say that number 5 was her
lucky number; others believe that Ernest Beaux developed several formulas and Coco chose the test sample N°5. On 4 April 1924, Parfums Chanel was established, with Gabrielle Chanel a ten-percent owner. She would complain about the size of this share the rest of her life, but the truth is that her ten-percent share made her wealthy. This first perfume is still sold today with slight changes in image and smell, but without losing the very essence of the product. Chanel N°5 is the first perfume in the floral-aldehyde group and the one with more aldehydes in its composition. The top notes are composed of aldehydes, bergamot, lemon, neroli and ylang-ylang; the heart of jasmine, rose, lily of the valley and iris, while the base includes vetiver, sandalwood, vanilla, amber and patchouli. N°5 was the first of a wide range of fragrances for the fashion house, which encompasses Coco Mademoiselle, Chance, Allure and Cristalle, N°19 among many others that match the taste of any woman. chanel.com

Nacho Figueras Professional Polo Player
Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras is the most popular Polo player ever. His face is on every magazine as the ambassador of Ralph Lauren Fragrances’ World of Polo and Lauren’s Black Label clothing collection; his playing kit is on display at the American Museum of Natural History; and he has appeared in issues of Vanity Fair, The New York Times Style and The Hamptons Magazine. Here we present an abstract of his life in his own words. BY dIANA VARgAS.
I’m passionate about horses. They are fundamental in Polo’s world, they are an essential part of the game, therefore the possibility of your team’s success depends on your ride. The secret is to achieve a perfect symbiosis between horse and rider, as equals; in this relation no one is stronger. You have to get along with the ten horses in the game. I own 200 horses and we never argue. Four years ago I began breeding thoroughbred horses in my ranch outside of Buenos Aires, some are Argentinean and some are American.
nacho figueras enjoys The adrenaline-charged sporT. he loves speed and flirTing wiTh danger, jusT like a parT of The maTch. Adrenaline turns me on. I love riding because I get a rush of energy through my
body, I imagine that is what an F1 driver experiences at 155 miles per hour, with someone following him and getting closer and closer. It is exciting. That constant flirt with danger is what fulfills me in life.

I admire Jackson Pollock, Basquiat and Jeff Koons as well as the works of Luis Barragán, Tadao Ando and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
This sTylish man feels ThaT iT is beTTer To be overdressed Than underdressed. The beautiful concepts of classical and elegant have already been corrupted. I always try to go back to classic elegance in my outfits, therefore I prefer to be overdressed than looking shabby. For me, being elegant is something natural. I never wear pants for traveling, I prefer to go with a blazer or a suit. I like my suits to be Italian tailored, and I like them most when they are fitted.

It’s Vegas Baby!
With its golden façade arching toWard the sky, Wynn Las Vegas provides a unique fusion of nature and luxury. Flowers bloom throughout the Wynn property, both living and as part of the design. The interior has some superior moments, including considerable use of natural light (via various skylights and atriums), unusual in this town and most welcome, and a floral motif reflected in eye-catching brightly hued floor mosaics, artistic fresh-flower arrangements throughout, and, best of all, the atrium that runs down the center features frequently changed displays. The marriage of luxury and nature at Wynn Las Vegas does not end with the resort’s main level. Guests ascending the 50-story hotel tower will discover rooms designed with floor-to-ceiling windows (west side shows off the mountain and waterfalls; east side, the golf course); deeply comfortable beds, with high-thread-count sheets and feather beds atop good-quality mattresses, plus down comforters; flatscreen TVs; and excellent up-to-theminute bathrooms, complete with quite long and deep tubs. Take note of the silky-satiny robes and plush velour slippers. All the rooms are done in shades that happily break the recent trend toward bland parchment tones. Located on the main casino floors, the collection of games at Wynn Las Vegas and Encore includes Blackjack Switch, Craps, Ultimate Texas Hold’em, Crazy 4 Poker. A range of Slots and Video games where you can bet from 1 cent on up to $5,000 and somewhere in all of these games you are sure to find
your favorite one. In Wynn’s Race & Sports Book you can enjoy the excitement of wagering on current and future U.S. sporting and racing events in their comfortable lounge setting. Your dining experience will never be the same after dining at one of the Wynn Restaurants. The Alex restaurant, serving French cuisine, received the highest ratings that can be achieved by a restaurant with its Mobil 5 Star and AAA Five Diamond awards. Okada with Japanese cuisine, Bartolotta Ristorante di Mare with Italian cuisine, Wing Lei with Chinese cuisine and the SW Steakhouse serving Steak and Seafood are also superior dining options. At the Wynn there are two great shows: Le Rêve, a show of aerobatics and acrobatics that take place over and in a beautiful pool of water, the sublime creation of Cirque Du Soleil veteran Franco Dragone; and Spamalot that was taken from the motion picture Monty Python and the Holy Grail, with this deliriously funny show, the legendary King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table are on a quest for the Holy Grail. Do not forget to stop by one of the six Bars and Lounges for a little nightlife entertainment. Where else but the Wynn Las Vegas can a shopper leave a hotel with Manolo Blahniks and a brand new Ferrari? The Wynn Esplanade offers a unique shopping experience with stores including Chanel, Christian Dior, Oscar de la Renta and many more. The resort is also home to the Penske Wynn Ferrari Maserati dealership and showroom. wynnlasvegas.com

a well-deserved tribute to andy warhol
Andy WArhol, the most important figure of Pop Art, continues to inspire creativity in artists two decades after his death. Most recently it has been found in the creation of an exclusive collection of three bottles by the Design Laboratory at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art & Design and Dom Pérignon paying tribute to one of the most illustrious artists of the 20th century. On March 8th, 1981, Warhol wrote in his diary: “Went to the gallery where they were having a little exhibition of the glittery Shoes, and had to do interviews and pics for the German newspaper and then we had to go back to the hotel and be picked up by the 2,000 people—it’s a club of twenty guys who got together and they’re going to buy 2,000 bottles of Dom Pérignon which they will put in a sealed room until the year 2000 and then open it up and drink it and so the running joke is who will be around and who
won’t...” Andy had just returned from Munich where he had had a show, and was recounting what he had seen. He once said that he had been to thousands of parties in his life. Specifically, he liked to go to New York’s Studio 54 in the late 1970’s, the wildest and most theatrical club of the period
(along with Le Palace in Paris), and drink Dom Pérignon with his friends. For this reason the brand commemorates Warhol with three unique bottles. Each has its own distinct label presented in red, blue or yellow. The boxes also exhibit colors such as cyan, red, violet, emerald green, lilac and yellow, paying homage to Warhol’s iconic color games. Just like those bottles stored by Warhol and his friends, Vintage 2002 of this collection has traveled from darkness to light. Just like all Dom Perignon’s champagnes, this one was created on grapes grown in the eight grand crus, as well as in the mythical grand cru of Hautvillers. The bubbles in this blend of 45 percent Chardonnay and 55 percent Pinot Noir are a signature of the house. The aroma of white pepper and gardenia defines the wine’s scent, while hints of dried ginger and pear dance on the tongue.domperignon.com

spected the natural habitat while offering a world-class vacation experience.

Divine Dining
Santé ReStauRant is the Inn’s premier dining room and has earned a national reputation for its outstanding food. In 2004, when the French chef Bruno Tison took over this restaurant at the historic Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa, he set his sights high, with a creative menu that paired French flavors with American favorites. The gamble seems to have paid off: the restaurant received a Michelin star last year—one of only four in Sonoma County to be awarded the distinction. Santé is a beautifully lit restaurant with a semi-formal but “wine-country casual” atmosphere, tucked inside the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn. You don’t need to be a guest at this historic property to taste the artistry, but after tucking in to a satisfying meal and polishing off one of the several bottles of wine, you might just want to retire to a room in the hotel. Smiling staff set the tone at this laid back, yet luxurious restaurant. Only the freshest local produce, meats, poultry and seafood are used to create elegantly simple dishes that let the natural flavors of the food speak
for themselves. Amuse-bouche such as a wide spoon of parsnip foam (actually a delicate mousse) and asparagus en gelée topped with goat cheese signal an elevated experience of seasonal delights. Crack through a wispy brown sugar shell hinting of caraway to plow for creamy caramelized onion risotto, or indulge in meaty pork belly and root vegetables. A pristine Parma ham broth glorifies ling cod with chive gnocchi. Even the bread basket, which showcases the talents of a local bakery, is beyond compare. The menu features à la carte selections, though a tasting menu is available nightly for those who can get the group to agree. The wine list, honored with Wine Spectator’s ‘Award of Excellence,’ offers over 500 different types of domestic and Californian selections. Don’t pass up the superb desserts—also from the hands of the chef; in particular, warm chestnut milk with chestnut dumpling or a plate of chocolate treats. Aston Martin Rapide In spite of the fact that traditionally, by strict definition, the descriptions “four-door” and “sports car” are contradictions in terms to the sports car purist, these cars really do seem to have knocked out yet another new niche in the luxury/performance car landscape.
Let’s start with the newborn Aston Martin Rapide. Although officially launched in September 2010 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the car had already been exhibited in 2006 as a concept car at the Auto Show in Detroit. Functional yet luxurious, the elegant Rapide provides space for up to four adults. As the marque’s first production four-door sports car, Rapide encapsulates core values of power, beauty and soul; four ‘swan wing’ doors provide access to cosseting sports seats both front and rear bestowing occupants with ample accommodation. Comfort and support is supplied in the form of two hand trimmed individual seats and a personal face-level heating and air conditioning system. The luggage compartment features a movable bulkhead to permit access from the rear cabin while the rear seats fold flat at the touch of a button to create a flat loading space increasing the luggage compartment from 317 litres to 886 litres. The front mid-mounted 6.0 litre V12 engine which sits at the heart of Rapide produces 470 bhp (477 PS / 350 kW) with peak power being delivered at 6000 rpm and 600 Nm (443 lbft) and peak torque at 5000 rpm: the resultant 0-60 mph time is 5.1 seconds. The standard six-speed Touchtronic 2 automatic transmission has been calibrated

Test Drive Spirit to ensure that the additional weight of Rapide has had a minimal impact on fuel economy, emissions and performance. The system also includes a ‘Sport’ mode—activated by a button on the centre console—which engages a more aggressive gear shift strategy as gear changes feel sharper and more forceful, engine speed matching on downshifts is more aggressive and in full automatic mode, upshifts occur at higher speeds. Protecting passengers in the event of an accident, a total of eight airbags are strategically located throughout the cabin. Restraint sensors around the vehicle help Rapide decide not only which airbag to deploy but also how aggressively depending on the severity of impact, ensuring that Rapide is one of the safest sports cars on the road. As you might guess, the Rapide is by no means cheap, but the price includes a whole slew of standard equipment, including a 6-CD autochanger and MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth, powerfold mirrors, HDD satellite navigation, and, critically, a 13-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.
Porsche Panamera

A TRIBUTE TO LA CARRERA PANAMERICANA Developed completely new from the ground up, the Panamera sets new standards in its class not only through supreme performance combined with low fuel consumption, but also through an exclusive range of features and equipment. Showing their usual feeling of design, Porsche’s design specialists have succeeded in making the Panamera a brand-new and truly unique model and, at the same time, a typical Porsche all the way. Right from the start the Panamera stands out through its proportions. Developed consistently as a four-seater, this unique Sedan goes its own way also in interior design and comfort. Despite its unmistakably low and stretched silhouette, the Panamera measuring 4.97 metres (195.7”) in length but only 1.42 metres (55.9”) in height offers genuine space and grace on all four seats. Efficiency is of fundamental significance both with the Panamera and with Porsche’s sports cars in general. Precisely this is why the car comes with Direct Fuel Injection, low-friction drive systems and a lightweight body. The core technologies of the new Panamera include no less than five innovations offered for the first time in a luxury performance production model: this sedan features for the first time a Start Stop system in conjunction with automatic transmission, adaptive air suspension with additional air volume in each spring, as well as active aerodynamics provided by the rear spoiler moving up auto-
matically and adjustable in its angle, and has the first Sports Chrono Package in this market segment. The latter gives the engine, suspension and transmission, as well as other components, an even more sporting set-up and, in conjunction with PDK, features the special Launch Control function for acceleration to 100 km/h from a standstill another 0.2 seconds faster.
A MUSCULAR, SELF-ASSURED PRESENCE Ultimate luxury and comfort on four wheels is what you experience when in Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The S-Class 500, the largest sedan in the Mercedes-Benz line up, offers a generous cabin space, with ample legroom, to all its occupants. State-of-the-art technology has been used in the engineering of this vehicle. Backed by a powerful engine, killer looks and high-tech features, Mercedes-Benz S-Class astounds everyone. The modified design reflects the effortless superiority and power of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. It is characterised by the more pronounced arrow-shape of the radiator grille, plus a new front bumper with a discreet light-catching contour and a chrome strip below the cooling air intakes. Detailed fine-tuning of the engine has been supplemented with addition fuel economy measures as part of the BlueEfficiency package. These include aerodynamic optimisation, demand-controlled fuel pumps and the fuel-efficient gearshift programme for the stan-

MASERATI’S MOST POWERFUL SEDAN EVER The Quattroporte Sport GT S is the most exciting combination of luxury sedan and performance sports car that Maserati has ever produced. The designers at Pininfarina have succeeded in their aim of giving the car a sportier edge whilst preserving the integrity of the original design. The new grille is the most obvious exterior change. It is now wider and has vertical slats that echo the GranTurismo, whilst its black finish maintains the original styling cues. Turning to the bodywork, the sweeping wing mirrors are more aerodynamic. The shape of the body below the doors lends the

dard 7G-tronic automatic transmission. These measures also have enabled Mercedes-Benz developers to go green by reducing fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by up to seven percent compared to the preceding models. By means of additional wellaimed aerodynamic measures, the Mercedes-Benz engineers have also managed to reduce wind noise, thus further enhancing the standard of ride comfort. A world-first combination of state-of-the-art assistance and protection systems is available for this Sedan. The new assistance systems turn the car into an “intelligent” partner for their drivers. The car is able to respond “instinctively” to detected dangers and to act “on its own initiative” in order to avoid accidents or to reduce the severity of accidents. Moreover, with the drowsiness detection system attention assist, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class 500 has a very sensitive feel for the attention level of its driver, and warns him in good time when he becomes drowsy.

new model a more purposeful look. The car appears poised as if on the starting blocks, ready for action with its racier set-up perfectly complementing the new 440 bhp power unit. The car exudes speed even when it is stationary. The Quattroporte Sport GT S comes with two new types of 20” wheel rim: Multi Trident rims in light aluminium alloy as an option and seven-spoke light alloy rims that have undergone the ‘Dark Chrome’ treatment. The seats, which are state of the art in terms of ergonomics and comfort, have a stylised M for Maserati on the backs. The central sections of the seats are upholstered in perforated Alcantara, for optimal breathability and a firm support during hard cornering. The interior finishes on this version are a celebration of technology and workmanship. The material used is the groundbreaking TitanTex, an ultra-lightweight aluminium-coated titanium fibre fabric, made even more special by a specific processing, which gives the in-
terior a high-tech, high-performance look, as well as a shinier, more three-dimensional overall appearance. The new Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S comes with a high performance braking system developed by Brembo. Capable of 440 HP at 7,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 490 Nm at 4,750 rpm, it raises the car’s performance to unprecedented levels. These figures have been achieved not only by modifying the engine’s electronic control parameters, but also through in-depth development of the racing exhaust system, a real jewel of engineering. The new model uses front and rear lights that have been developed to offer only the best in each individual function. The use of LEDs makes a big impact on the car and is one of the elements that link this model to the Maserati GranTurismo. The most important lighting functions have been improved. The front xenon cluster now boasts the Adaptive Light Control system. This produces a brighter and clearer beam compared to conventional bulbs.
During its six years of life, the Maserati Quattroporte has received no less than fifty six awards from the most prestigious automotive and lifestyle publications in fourteen countries over in four continents.

Both versions have a crew cabin. Ilegal Mezcal añejo This double distillation of agave from Oaxaca, evokes a sour, smoky flavor. The sourness has become sweet, providing a polished refinement worthy of a martini glass. The añejo is especially notable, with accents of toasted marshmallow and cotton candy.
pure mezcales Think of mezcal (also known as mescal) as you would a single malt scotch, or better yet when comparing red wines of different vintages from the regions of France. Or perhaps grape varietals from the diversity of valleys and coastal areas in Australia. Forget about the worm for the time being, and forever the reputation with the college crowd of mezcal’s better known sister, tequila. BY AlejAndro M. GArcíA
THe aNcIeNT mezcal BeVeraGe Is imbued with the mysteries and magic of the civilizations that have inhabited the Mexican territory. Grand dame of Mexican cuisine, this beverage is extracted from the agave plant which appeared in America 8 million years ago. The agave plant has supplied food, drink and dress to the inhabitants of the area for the past 10 thousand years. Furthermore, as is supported by a study of the Chicago Tasting Institute in 2005, mezcal is one of

Desires SPIRITS the most perfect beverages for human intake due to their particular molecular chain. This plant is characterized by its large fleshy leaves with spears on the ends. At its center there is a bulb (called a pina) containing the fluid that will become the mezcal. The growth of the stem is patiently waited by the farmers. It takes about seven years for the plant to mature and finally prepare for harvesting. In Oaxaca, where the tradition of making the best mezcal flourishes, three words are key to approach the origin of this drink: espadín, arroquense and tobalá. Each refers to three species of agave that, once fermented and distilled, produce as many varieties of mezcal. Espadín and arroquense are the product of the cultivated plant, while tonalá is a wild agave. Different kinds of mezcal have their own particular characteristics. Younger mezcales may
have slight tones of wood, smoke, aromatic herbs, highlighting the maguey and citrus flavor. In turn, the mezcal añejo shows the same tones as well as aromas and flavors characteristic of the maguey worm. Generally, the worm is added to mezcal when it is being bottled and connoisseurs say that it gives the beverage a slightly salty taste. This worm tradition has led to the creation of a salt that is obtained by crushing the maguey worms. To understand the richness of mezcal it is important to emphasize that only the finest organic agaves can be used for the development of this superior drink. Regardless of any preconceived notions you might have about mezcal, have a taste whenever the opportunity arises, if only enough to discern differences and develop a palate for one or more types you prefer from the broad array of flavors, agings and degrees of smokiness.
MEZCAL MAYA Aged in oak barrels, Maya mezcal produces a sophisticated, mellow and balanced flavor with extraordinary smoothness. This premium mezcal is made with the finest, mature, hand selected, Oaxaca Valley Agave. Nothing compares to this rich and well rounded mezcal.

that is featured on the GTX Limited iS 260. This is the first time ever that this kind of system is integrated to a watercraft. With the iS the driver is protected from the impact caused by rough water, so you’ll be able to ride longer and more comfortably. You will not only enjoy speed and comfort at sea on board of this watercraft, you will also be safe. The GTX Limited iS 260 features the iController, a tool that allows you to limit the power of the watercraft to the driver’s ability, so you can gradually acquire expertise. The GTX Limited iS 260 is also an award winning machine. Watercraft World awarded the GTX Limited iS the highly coveted 2009 Watercraft of the Year award; it has also been recognized by the National Marine Manufacturers Association and it was the winner of the Boating Safety Award by the U.S. Cost Guard. Renowned for its safe design and
reliability, this famous marine watercraft is ideal for those seeking adventures in the water. en-us.sea-doo.com

Thierry Stern President of Patek Philippe
Young, modest and polite are three words that perfectly describe the president of one of the most elegant watch manufacturers in the world. In this exclusive interview, we talked about what makes Patek Philippe a paradigm of elegance and distinction. by AlejAndro M. GArcíA They know they have to watch out, they do not know how long it is going to take to recover, so they are very vigilant and they have stopped buying those gimmick watches. That is where Patek Philippe is very strong, our brand is known, and that we are a very secure brand.
the tIMePIeCe that everybody ShoULd have? The watch that everybody should have is the one that they’re willing to wear, but I would never impose a watch. Everybody is different so it is up to the client to make up his own choice and what can really satisfy him from our collection. But I firmly believe that when you buy your first Patek, you should not start by saying “I am going to buy a tourbillon or a minute repeater”; you should start with a basic collection to find the one that you enjoy and then you can start building up your collection step by step, and not just go straight to the most complicated ones.
NoW that yoU have MeNtIoNed CoMPLICatIoNS, What IS yoUr FavorIte CoMPLICatIoN? The “Minute Repeater” by Patek Philippe. It is a beautiful watch because it looks very clean and the sound is very pure.
In the first place I would say perfection. Of course there is no way you can reach perfection, but there is always something to improve, a way to get closer to perfection. That is really what is behind us at Patek Philippe: everybody is willing to do the best to do a perfect product.
What SetS PateK aPart FroM other MaNUFaCtUrerS? It is the know-how that we have been gathered after working without interruption for 175 years. We have reached a level of quality and a level of complexity that the other brands cannot reach because they don’t have enough experience. When you buy a Patek Philippe you are not just buying a watch, you are
buying a beautiful piece of art. Our clients have the security that Patek Philippe is able to take care of the watches for years. People know that they can invest in a watch that we are always going to be able to fix and to maintain. When I sell a watch, my business is not finished: it has just started.
hoW haS the GLobaL eCoNoMICaL CrISIS aFFeCted HAUTe HorloGerIe? Of course this crisis has hurt Patek Philippe. But on the other side, the demand rates have stayed very high. I would say that the crisis has even helped us because for once the clients can have the chance to find the pieces that they are willing to buy and they do not need to wait five years to get them, maybe they only need to wait six months for some of the pieces. People are now willing to spend money only on valuable items.
What do yoU eNJoy MoSt aboUt yoUr Job? Since I was young I have always enjoyed creating a watch and this is really why I came into the watch industry. It was not to do all those fantastic businesses. What makes me happy is to design a watch and to say, “Wow, this is a really good watch.” This is what I enjoy the most.
hoW WoULd yoU deSCrIbe yoUrSeLF aS a PerSoN? I don’t know. I try to be down-to-earth. I was lucky because my father was also like that and raised me as someone who should always stay really humble and not be selfish, like a diva. I am also someone who likes to be around and see the world. I really love Asia. I have always been impressed by them, by their commitment and culture.

G&C FARM
A DREAM
COMING TRUE
The Mirabals of Venezuela have a dream to honor their country and their equestrian passion by developing world-renowned riders. After completely changing their lives to see this dream come true, in less than two years they are well on their way.
Top: “G&C Quivola” and Pablo Barrios. Opposite: Pablo Barrios galloping victoriously.
Rising to the top When thinking about the world best show jumpers, riders that hail from a variety of countries come to mind. American McLain Ward, German Marcus Ehning, Canadian Eric Lamaze are all familiar names on the international circuit. At the 2010 World Equestrian Games four different countries were represented in the final four of show jumping – winner Phillip Le Jeune of Belgium, Abdullah Al Sharbatly of Saudi Arabia, Brazil’s Rodrigo Pessoa and the aforementioned Canadian Lamaze. Gustavo and Carolina Mirabal of G&C Farm have set their sights on adding their home country Venezuela to that list. They sponsor show jumper Pablo Barrios of Venezuela who in one year has risen from a ranking of 93rd to 25th in the world. In 2010, Barrios won a number of grand prix events in the United States, Canada and Europe and collected three gold medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games. In a field of 125
international riders at the World Equestrian Games, this rising Venezuelan show jumping star finished in the top 30. Only a few months into the 2011 show season, Barrios has garnered top placings in several classes at the prestigious FTI Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), including earning World Cup ranking points throughout the circuit with his sights set on competing in Leipzig, Germany for the 2011 FEI World Cup Show Jumping Finals, as well as winning both the WEF Challenge Cup and the $35,000 Hermes Puissance class by clearing a solid wall at a height of 7’3” (2.21m). After the European tour this summer, including the Global Champions Tour, and Spruce Meadows Masters in September, Barrios will head to Guadalajara, Mexico this fall to represent his country at the 2011 Pan American Games. As one of the few Latin Americans ranked in the top 100, Barrios has made a mark in Venezuelan history. He is the first rider in history from “Group V” (the FEI geographical area which includes Venezuela) to be ranked in the top 30 in the world.

How tHe Rise Falls into Place This level of achievement in such a short time is certainly remarkable and by no means accidental. The Mirabals moved their family to the equestrian community of Wellington, Florida in 2009 with very specific equestrian goals in mind. First with advice from fellow countryman and Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios, the Mirabal’s created G&C Farm, a state-of-the-art facility for exceptional horses and riders. At this address, they are truly riding distance from one of the best competition facilities in the United States, the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, home to the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival, a circuit that hosts twelve consecutive weeks of top-notch competition.
“We can either go for the money, or we can go for history. If you ask me, I’m going for history.”

Next come the horses. Clearly with a good eye for talent, the stars of the G&C Farm include the beautiful Oldenburg bay gelding “G&C LaGran” who among other wins partnered with Barrios to earn his top 30 ranking at the World Equestrian Games. The Dutch bay gelding “G&C Sinatra” helped Barrios win the coveted $175,000 Nexen Derby at the esteemed Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Barrios is the only Venezuelan to ever win at this well-respected international equestrian place-to-be in the summer season. The young and clearly scopey “G&C Quivola” bravely cleared the Puissance wall for the win. Coming in second to this pair was another G&C talent, “Tropigold,” ridden by Gustavo Arroyo of Venezuela. “G&C Quick Star 11” and “G&C Blanchee Z” have topped the field in several WEF grand prix classes plus G&C Farm is bringing along several up-and-coming young horses. Then once you have a solid string of talented jumpers, you have know when to hold ‘em. As G&C Farm’s Gustavo Mirabal explained “When we started at WEF at the beginning of last year, I was in New York in a meeting. When I got out, I had many phone calls from Pablo. When I talked to him, he said a horse dealer wanted to buy our best two horses and wanted a price. I remember perfectly the words that Pablo said, ‘My friend, this can go two ways. We can either go for the money, or we can go for history. If you ask me, I’m going for history.’ Immediately, I told him that I was on the same track as him. That was the start of our journey, and what a magnificent start!” Yet an essential aspect of the dream includes even more. A Nations Cup Team, which is the next step to an Olympic Team, is not made of one rider. Pablo Barrios needs three more solid Venezuelan riders with fabulous horses to join him in the quest for top world rankings. Again G&C Farm seeks to host these riders and help them to reach the top of the sport. In 2010 Loisse Garcia and her horses joined the team at Wellington to gain some essential experience and miles in the ‘international ring.’ The team at G&C is continuously looking for talent, both in horse and rider, an ongoing part of pursuing the goal of seeing Venezuela rank among the worlds best.

To be competitive at this level takes what is known at G&C Farm as a strong “escudería.” A term used by Formula One racing teams, it means to have the best combination of a solid support network and overall organization. The team includes not just top horses and excellent riders but veterinarians, grooms, and working students. Plus this year G&C Farm asked the legendary Nick Skelton of Great Britain to coach Pablo Barrios. Gaining the perspective of a rider who has seven European Championships medals, represented his country six-times in the Olympics, earned five medals at the World Equestrian Games, topped the field in four DuMaurier/CN International $1 million dollar Grand Prix events at Spruce Meadows and won the World Cup Finals, could be the boost Barrios needs to make the leap into the top 10 in the world. Barrios commented, “Nick did a great job helping me with ‘LaGran.’ After WEG he lost a little focus. With his help, the horse is coming back. The rest is more the strategy of how to ride the courses and the best schedule for the horses. The other day in the grand prix, he was totally right in how to ride the triple combination that many people had problems with. I really followed the way he wanted me to come in, and the mare jumped it beautifully.”
What’s in a name G&C Farm not only achieved success in a short time, they have rapidly developed a name for themselves as solid supporters of the sport. Believing in opportunity, Mirabal quickly realized that riders from North and South America needed more chances to earn points towards the Rolex FEI Rankings. Beginning with Spruce Meadows and continuing on to the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival, G&C Farm has
generously sponsored classes that play a role in international rankings. In 2011, G&C Farm was the presenting sponsor of the $75,000 FEI Nations Cup, the $50,000 G&C Farm Palm Beach Jumping Derby and the title sponsor of the CSIO week at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. Understanding that an essential element to achieving success is letting the world know about it, G&C Farm also brought on a media company to handle their marketing and publicity. From social media to press to video production and more, Jennifer Wood Media has played a significant role in publicizing G&C Farm’s prolific progress.

For the Love oF it As children in Venezuela, Gustavo Mirabal and Pablo Barrios started riding horses together around the age of 10. They took lessons at the same country club, competed together at shows, and attended the same school. As they grew up they went their separate ways, one became an architect, the other a lawyer, both still involved with horses. Giving up his career in architecture, Barrios started a training facility in Venezuela and once he started traveling to the United States to compete, he decided to stay. That was a decade ago. In 2009 when Mirabal decided to become more involved in show jumping on an international level, he contacted Barrios. He was confident in the partnership but was ecstatic with their results in 2010, beginning with their equestrian location in Wellington. Mirabal recollected “I remember Pablo told me, ‘Be careful. It’s a tough, tough circuit. We might not win one class.’ They actually didn’t win one class - they won more than 20 classes during the 2010 WEF circuit including six grand prix events! Clearly pleased with their choices to date, G&C Farm is not only becoming a Wellington name but per their goals the name is gaining international recognition. The Mirabal family couldn’t be happier. “Our principal goal is to promote the sport in Latin America,” stated Mirabal. “We hope to bring more people to the States to show here. We want them to see that it’s possible to do this. Everybody thinks it’s impossible. I think if you have this goal in mind and you work for it, you can do it. I hope we are showing everyone that now.” G&C Farm’s accomplishments are vital for Venezuela. “To hear the Venezuelan national anthem and see the flag raised is a great feeling. It is indicative that we are on the right track. I have a particular goal to see G&C Farm compete on all continents and hopefully win!” Gustavo Mirabal and his family have made a commitment. Their reward is to see the Venezuelan flag flying high during a victory gallop. That is and will continue to be their dream come true.

2011 HITS Desert Circuit in Thermal The Best Winter Circuit Destination on the West Coast By Danette KaDlic
T
he 20th Anniversary of the HITS Desert Circuit in Thermal, California, was one for the record books. Blessed by six weeks of absolutely perfect weather, the Circuit enjoyed its most successful and well-attended season since 2007 when it moved to its new 200+ acre property. For the past 20 years, this thriving winter Circuit has been home to some of the world’s best show jumping stars, and 2011 was no different as top riders from all over the world once again came to Thermal for the very best in winter showing. Desert Circuit veterans Rich Fellers, Richard Spooner, Joie Gatlin, Susie Hutchison, Hap Hansen, Jill Humphrey, John French, Hope Glynn, and new comers Charlie Jayne and Kirsten Coe represented some of the best in U.S. athletes, while the Canadian contingent included none other than Olympians Jill Henselwood, John Andersen, Karen Cudmore, and 2010 Pfizer Million third place winner John Pearce. Representing Europe was Ireland’s Eddie Macken, Great Britain’s Helen McNaught and Germany’s Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, who made her HITS Desert Circuit debut this season, while Duncan McFarlane and Guy Thomas represented New Zealand. For the second year in a row, riders from Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, and Puerto Rico were also in full-force with José Alberto Martínez, Jr., Eduardo Menezes, John Perez and Mark Watring all enjoying successful outings in the Desert. Canadian John Pearce, who now calls Bermuda Dunes, California home, started the season strong with two back-to-back wins

in the first two Grand Prix of the Circuit—$25,000 SmartPak and $50,000 EMO Grand Prix, both presented by Pfizer Animal Health. Oregon’s Rich Fellers had another stand out season with four Grand Prix victories, including one FEI World Cup victory in the $50,000 Strongid C 2X Grand Prix during Desert Circuit II. But in truth, the biggest story coming out of the 2011 HITS Desert Circuit is that of rising star and high-school senior Lucy Davis. The Los Angeles native completely dominated the last two weeks of competition at HITS Thermal winning four Grand Prix in a row, including the final FEI World Cup Qualifier, two $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, and then the big $200,000 Lamborghini Grand Prix, presented by Lamborghini of Newport Beach, to close out the Circuit on Sunday, March 13. “I could never believe this in a million years,” said Davis, after she won the $200,000 Grand Prix. “I was so happy to just win one Grand Prix and I kept thinking that there was no way that this could ever happen. Some of the best riders in the world were competing here today and to come out on top is just surreal.” And while Davis was dominating in the Grand Prix ring, Woodside’s John French was cleaning up in the Hunters. During DC V, French dominated World Champion Hunter Rider Week after being named Champion in every rated division and then went on to win the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix that same week. He came back a week later and won again, this time in the $25,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix. French split the Devoucoux Hunter Prix victories with fellow professionals Hope Glynn of Petaluma who captured three of the six classes, and young professional Nick Haness of Coto de Caza who captured a victory during DC I. French, Glynn and Haness all have one thing on their mind, and that’s the all-new Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final which takes place September 10-11 at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York. This power-house trio in the Hunter ring, Haness, Glynn and French, currently hold the number three, five and
six spots in the preliminary Diamond Mills Rider Rankings and represent three of the five automatically qualified riders from Thermal that will be heading to Saugerties this September. It’s clear that the draw to show in Thermal during the winter season is fueled by the Circuit’s 16 Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix Qualifiers, the four $50,000 FEI World Cup Qualifiers, and the six Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final Qualifiers, but as regulars of the Circuit already know and new exhibitors learned this season, there’s much more to love about Thermal. Aside from the fact that

the HITS Desert Circuit hosts more classes and awards more prize money than any other show circuit on the West Coast, the property is transforming into one of the most incredible destinations to show at in the world. In just five years, HITS has taken a blank canvas in the middle of the Coachella Valley and turned it into a virtual show jumping oasis. The facilities and space at the HITS Desert Horse Park are second to none. VIPs were treated to star-quality amenities with two fantastic spaces to choose from—the sold-out Charles Owen VIP Club was the place to be if World Cup action is what you love, while the Oasis VIP Club and the White & Company Private Client Group Hospitality Tent provided patrons with the ultimate out-door, ringside experience. HITS President and CEO, Tom Struzzieri, is pleased with the response to this year’s circuit. “When I convinced my partners at Leonard Green to dedicate funding to a new state-of-the-art facility for the United States I had envisioned just this kind of week, extraordinary attendance at a facility that can handle large numbers of horses in a safe and horse-friendly manner. Of course I had hoped that this reaction and result would have been achieved a year or two
earlier, but it is still extremely gratifying to see this success. I want our customers to know that we will continue to pursue excellence here, and look at this as a step toward our commitment to our clients and the Thermal Circuit. We will be relentless in our pursuit of an improved product for next year and will use this year’s success as a springboard to new innovations for the 2012 season.” Sanjay Bagai of Zeitgeist Equestrian, LLC in Petaluma, California, was quick to share his impressions of the season. “Everything about the technical quality of the HITS Thermal facility qualifies it as a world class venue, from the fantastic footing, the running of the rings, the courses, the course designers, and the incredible VIP services. To think that it started as a 200-acre patch in the desert, and today it’s a place that answers all the technical challenges that our horses, and we as riders, face when we show. Its quality equals that of any other top show in the world.” “I have to commend Brian Morris [HITS Technical Director], who is so incredibly orchestrated in his approach to running this facility,” added Bagai. “It’s incredible how he runs the crew, with no hesitation, nor confusion. They are always on the top of their game. This is without a doubt the best footing in the country and the way that he maintains it is second to none. It’s been fantastic here, and my only disappointment is that we didn’t get to show for the whole circuit. We ended up selling some of our good horses and could only show the second half but when we arrived, everything felt fresh as if the horse show had just started. The atmosphere is superb. It’s clear what HITS has in store for this Circuit and I have a lot of confidence in where HITS is going.” So, after a superb 2011 Desert Circuit at the HITS Desert Horse Park, the focus now shifts east to the spring and summer shows in Culpeper, Virginia and Saugerties, New York where the road to the Pfizer Million and Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final continues on!

A ON Star Is Born A SPECIAL DAY
IN GOTHENBURG Swedish hearts were bursting with pride as a bright young super-star was born in the Scandinavium Arena at Gothenburg, Sweden, where local girl Angelica Augustsson galloped to victory in the penultimate qualifying round of the 2010/2011 Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping series. by Louise Parkes
T
here was an outpouring of emotion in the aftermath, and even hardened veteran Ludger Beerbaum, who slotted into third behind runner-up Edwina Alexander from Australia, expressed his amazement at having taken part in one of the most thrilling competitions seen on the international circuit in recent history. “For any sport it is fantastic to see very talented up-and-coming young people, and what we saw today was the cream—it doesn’t come better than this, and we will remember today for a very long time,” said the German legend.
HIGH PRAISE Dutch course designer Louis Konickx earned high praise from riders all weekend and produced another master-piece for the test which saw 12 through to the second-round jump-off. With three home runners amongst them, the Swedish interest was always going to be strong, but pathfinders 21-year-old Douglas Lindelow and the mare “Talina” left the door open when hitting the penultimate oxer while fellow-countryman, Peder Fredricson, was eliminated with “H&M Arctic Aurora Borealis” when they fell at the fifth fence on the new track. Fredricson asked for a long stand-off, the
72 [ equlifestyle.com ]

grey gelding tried to chip in an extra stride and the result was a crashing fall that left a muted atmosphere around the ring despite no apparent damage to either horse or rider. Third to go, Augustsson immediately lifted Swedish spirits with a stunning run with “Midtown du Tillard.” This 11-year-old Crusing mare looked a handful to ride in Friday’s feature class but, as her 24-yearold rider explained, “she’s not very organized on the flat but she really wants to clear the fences” and as they weaved their way home in 33.69 seconds it was clear they had really put it up to the rest of them.
NONE COULD CATCH THEM And, try as they would, none could catch them, Switzerland’s Hansueli Sprunger and “Kepi de Valse” producing the next clear round two horses later but more than two seconds off the pace, while Beerbaum gave it his best shot with “Gotha” but was still more than a second slower. Portugal’s Luciana Diniz had a cut at it with “Winningmood” but, having already lowered the first element of the triple which was now reduced to just two efforts, she was very nearly dislodged from the saddle when tackling the oxer two from home. And the excitement still wasn’t over. Four-fault rounds from both Ireland’s Denis Lynch (“Abbervail van het Dingeshof ”) and Switzerland’s Pius Schwizer (“Carlina”) were followed by a determined effort from Germany’s Marco Kutscher, but his chances slipped away when “Cornet Obolensky” threw his head in the air in front of the penultimate fence and had to be represented thus bringing their tally to ten faults. Two fences down for The Netherlands’ Jeroen Dubbeldam (“BMC Van Grunsven Simon”) kept them out of the frame but last to go, Australia’s Edwina Alexander, set off like the wind with “Ciske van Overis” who jumped awkwardly in the first round but who seemed to thrive when the hand-brake was removed and sailed home with the closest time to Augustsson’s winning target to snatch second spot as the clock showed 34.08 seconds.
Photos: Claes Jakobsson // Matilda Hjertstrand, Swedish Equestrian Federation.
TEARS Augustsson couldn’t hold back the tears during the prize-giving ceremony. “I didn’t expect this at all” she said afterwards. But after steering her black gelding, “Walter”, into runner-up spot behind Frenchman Philippe Rozier in Saturday’s Grand Prix, third-placed Ludger Beerbaum predicted that it wouldn’t be long before this
young Swedish talent would enjoy her first Grand Prix success. He didn’t expect it would be so soon however. “This was a really fantastic day for our sport” he said, “it was the way Angelica did it, winning in front of her home crowd, it was very special and I am very happy to be part of it” he pointed out.
MOviNg STORY Augustsson has been working for horse agent Dietmar Gugler in Germany for the last four years, and her story is an inspiration to young people hoping to make their way in this tough sport. As a child she helped in the local riding school to earn riding lessons and when she was “maybe 9 or 10” she started riding with the Zetterman family and joined Alexander and Daniel on the pony circuit. “My family isn’t wealthy, so I never had a horse of my own but we rented stables and I rode horses for different people, including some for the Zettermans” she explained. It was while trying out horses at Gugler’s yard four years ago that he spotted the intuitive talent she is now displaying, so he offered her a job and she has made her way up the levels of the sport with help from trainers Ted Netterkvist and Gerry Mullins. Asked about her ambitions for the future she could hardly find the words to reply. “This is my first 5-star show, my first World Cup, my second time to ride ‘Midtown’ over a 1.60m track and my second time to ask her to gallop against the clock—I don’t know what to say!” she replied. It seems the Rolex FEI World Cup has unearthed another star.

ugusta National Golf Club was founded by Bobby Jones, the legendary amateur champion, and Clifford Roberts, an astute investment banker in New York. Jones's popularity within the game helped attract golf's biggest stars to the Masters, beginning with the inaugural event in 1934. The tradition of members wearing green jackets began in 1937. The idea was that Masters patrons easily could see members who would have accurate information. The club is open from mid-October to late May.
When to go Final Round: Sunday 10th April.
Where to stay This is the biggest event of the year in the area, so the local businesses respond accordingly. The best option for attending the masters is a rental house, however they are booked a year in advance. Because of the slow playing surface in at the Stade Roland Garros and the five-set men's singles matches without a tiebreak in the final set, the event is widely considered to be the most physically demanding tennis tournament in the world.

It begins the moment your plane touches down. Africa! In the footsteps of great explorers, adventurers, writers, frontiersmen and royalty, who knows what’s in store for you? In Equ we have made a selection of lodges and camps that will surround you with luxury and pamper you with exquisite world-class service, during your safari adventures. By Jack kanzi
Located in Kenya’s famous samburu nationaL Reserve, Larsens Camp is named after Erik Ole Larsen, a legendary Dane credited with defining the luxury safari under canvas. The Uaso Nyiro River on one side borders the camp. There is nothing to see but pristine nature on the other three borders. With just twenty luxury tents in a secluded location, this camp is both exclusive and hospitable. All tents are constructed on a plinth of natural stone in the highest degree of quality, from the neutral soft furnishings, to the reproduction antique pieces, to the private veranda with delightful river views. Wake at sunrise to the sounds of birdsong and monkey chatter. Each morning your airy and spacious tent will fill with sunlight, alerting you to the start of another African adventure. Each tent features en suite private bathrooms and a gigantic bed designed in chic safari style. The monkeys running over the tent tops and the
sound of the wild animals while sleeping are amazing and will make you feel close to Mother Nature. Guests share their dining experiences in locations that may vary from day to day. The dinning staff have lots of charisma and will charm you. Breakfast, lunch or dinner seem to taste doubly delicious when consumed al fresco, and they may be served on the riverbank under a canopy of fig trees, on the river front deck, by the campfire, on the tree deck over looking a watering hole or in the untamed wilderness. For your excursions, picnic baskets are served in true safari style complete with folding camp table and stools. Sundowners are served every evening by the campfire or on the tree deck. Larsens operates a fleet of custom-built four-wheel drive vehicles with roof hatches designed for game viewing in comfort and safety. Their drivers and guides take pride in their intimate knowledge of the reserve, its flora and the wildlife

These are taken in the nearby ‘bush’ outside the camp everyday with the resident naturalist. Larsens Tented Camp is a must if you visit Samburu. Chitwa Chitwa treat, Chitwa Chitwa earned its name as an affectionate ode to the aging giraffe bull who shared the lakeside home as an extended member of the Brink family. After its classic transformation into an eclectic blend of European style with African chic, Chitwa Chitwa has emerged as an exquisite balance between unbridled luxury and environmental harmony. Nestled in a pristine golden triangle of African fauna, the luxury lodge basks in the sun on the banks of one of the largest lakes of the exclusive 155,000 hectare Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, which forms part of the greater Kruger National Park. This private game lodge is magnificent and graceful in appearance; yet humble enough to evaporate into the surrounding beauty of the unspoiled bush of the Sabi Sand. Shaded by old knobthorn trees, guests can be assured of superlative game viewing from the
main lounge and dining areas as they are rendered invisible to the various groups of wild animals that congregate at the waters edge in the mornings and early evenings. Spacious viewing areas strewn with comfy daybeds and a rim-flow swimming pool
further enhance the feeling of being a part of the beautiful scenery, whilst creating the perfect environment to relax, unwind and absorb the sights, sounds and scents of Africa. The most thrilling and eagerly anticipated part of any stay in Chitwa Chitwa is undoubtedly the safari experience. This resort is highly acclaimed for its excellent game viewing, as all hunting in the area has been abolished for decades. As a result, the animals have grown accustomed to the presence of safari vehicles in their territory and guests enjoy the best opportunities to meet Africa’s Big Five: buffalo, elephant, rhino, leopard and lion. Qualified guides and Shangaan trackers who share their profound knowledge regarding this animal kingdom and its complex habitat enrich the safari experience. 24°44’2.16”S, 31°33’35.81”E Mpumalanga, South Africa Phone: 27(0)13 744 0876 chitwa.co.za

Protect your skin by applying sunscreen generously. Wear a hat—Panama or brimmed, it’s your call—and shades.
Bring a first aid kit. Also take all your meds, prescriptions, and insect repellents with you.
During your safari you will need plenty of water. Keep hydrated with a portable canteen.
Going on a safari trip is potentially dangerous as much as it is exciting. Make sure that you are covered by your insurance.
