EXECUTIVE
T
his year is WDM’s 7th consecutive season. 27 shows, over 3 million euro in prize money, millions of viewers through Eurosport, hundreds-of-thousands of people visited WDM shows and have enjoyed the very best dressage has to offer. The cornerstones of the WDM philosophy are still very much alive. Innovation, co-operation, internationalisation, (youth) development and ethics are more important than ever.
WDM GUIDE
Dear dressage friends
2015
Dressage can hardly be compared to urban sports that are widely popular with our young generation. However one could imagine that somewhere in the future IOC will have to decide between the both of them. Therefore WDM would like to challenge all stakeholders to have an open mind for change. We need a new horizon for dressage. In our opinion dressage can only benefit from the brainpower of the next generation dressage riders and experts from other sports. WDM would like to consider itself THE place to try-out innovations, a place where people can come together to discuss the future for the good of the sport. WDM would like to thank Axel Johnson Group and its CEO Antonia Ax:son Johnson for an inspiring 4 years of partnership. Antonia incorporates what WDM is all about. Without her WDM would not be in the position it is now. During WDM Mechelen 2014 we welcomed VIAN Group as our new title sponsor and are proud to join them in their ambition to grow dressage internationally. WDM wishes all riders, owners, fans, organisers and partners a wonderful and inspiring 2015 season.

D
ressage performed by real masters is an amazing show that touches feelings of everyone, both professionals and the audience. Unfortunately, there is a little number of events where the world’s best riders compete together. World Dressage Masters is a circuit of 5 star events, which are of the highest level. Having made our feasible contribution to organising shows of such level, we hope that more and more competitions will take place in the world. In this way, top riders will meet and please the audience with their performances. Moreover, World Dressage Masters holds dressage events for young riders in the U25 category and encourages young ambitious organising committees to make its first steps to organise competitions in the whole world. All these events help dressage to gain popularity worldwide. We really hope that our part in this project will be beneficial for everyone who loves this discipline and wants to see its future development.

“The bond between rider, horse and trainer is very special” I N N A L O G U T E N KOVA & S J E F J A N S S E N
WDM GUIDE
At the end of the drive is the splendid Anky Education Center. For decades it has been the mekka of international dressage sport. It is also where the Ukrainian Grand Prix rider Inna Logutenkova is trained by Sjef Janssen. Three to four half-days per week they work here together on Inna’s sporting career. A story about their partnership, the trust and the determination involved in reaching the top.
2015
W
hen entering the reception area of the complex, it is immediately obvious that this is an inspirational environment. There is a subtle hint that hard work pays. It’s all about craftsmanship and passion here. Exactly the environment that, four years ago, Inna Logutenkova was seeking. Her sponsor, VIAN Group, a company specialising in organising equestrian events, gave her the opportunity to move to Belgium in 2012 in order to develop a career in dressage. From 2010 to 2012 Anky was her trainer, after that Sjef took over. Inna tells about her partnership with Sjef: “He is often referred to as the best trainer in the world and I fully agree. The results speak for themselves. I especially find the way in which he manages to get the bond between rider, horse and trainer in balance particularly exceptional. Quietly and with understanding he always finds a solution. He knows how difficult dressage is and that helps tremendously.” In answer to the question as to what type of student Inna is, Sjef starts to laugh and asks Inna to leave. “She is very dedicated and a serious hard worker. She really goes for it. Recently she has become very strong in the basics, something to which we pay a tremendous amount of attention. She is really starting to master that now. Understanding dressage is a long road but she seems now to be ready for the more complicated work.” 2014 was a difficult year for Sjef. He lost both of his parents and was himself recovering from a brain tumor. Partly as a result of this he set priorities in his life. But training talented riders is one of his passions which he has not given up. With a smile on his lips he says: “I am coach for the Belgian team and then I also have three private pupils. Inna is one of them. Then there is Matthias Rath and Kristy Oatley. The goal of every trainer – at least my goal – is to see how far you can get with a particular horse. You only find out how good they are after a few years. It is all about potential and attitude, the same as with people really.” 17
2015 WDM GUIDE SUPPORT AT COMPETITIONS
Inna takes a sip of her tea, leans back in her chair and says: “I am always calm if Sjef goes with me to a competition because I know that when a problem arises he comes up with a solution. He lets me seek the solution myself first but if it doesn’t work then he is at the ready. That is a good feeling.” Inna rode at all World Dressage Masters events last year and is often accompanied by Sjef. About the WDM he says: “Before then we did not have an initiative like the show jumpers have always had. There was only the FEI World Cup. I think its good that WDM stuck it’s neck out. There is now much more media attention given to the riders and decent prize money to win.”
horses than the average show jumper. I think that the dressage riders need to conspire. They too attract full stands, certainly just as much as for jumping. It’s strange then that the difference is so big. But I think it is down to the FEI and especially to the riders themselves. They do not appear as a united front.” Jumping attracts more sponsors because it is easier for the spectator to understand. Sjef believes it is our task to together ensure that the outside world learns to understand dressage better. “There are positive developments ongoing. But it remains a specific sport. If you don’t know anything about dressage, then it is just like watching grass grow. The FEI, riders and owners need to do something about this.”
PRIZE MONEY
VALUABLE LESSON
For years the difference between the prize money for jumping and dressage competitions has been incredibly large. Sjef leans forward: “Show jumpers can often earn far more. I see show jumpers more as a trade union. They are often bread-winning riders who work hard and compete in many competitions in order to have something at the end of it all. Dressage is different. We have far fewer competitions and far fewer 18
What is the most valuable lesson that Sjef has taught his pupil? Inna: “Oh, I learn something new in each training session. I never stop learning. Each horse has a different key. But you have to have trust in both your horse and your trainer. Listen and learn. Sometimes I have to do something a million times without result, then suddenly everything falls into place and it works. Then you understand it and think: he was right.”

Q1 - What does being director of the VIAN Group entail? I am the manager of all of our team riders of which Inna is currently the most successful rider. The Ukrainian Alisa Kovanko is also in our team and is trained by Inna. I have been working for the VIAN Group for over five years now. Q2 - What is your link to horses? In the early ‘90’s I traded horses. In 2002 I was elected Secretary General of the Equestrian Federation of Ukraine. During the eight years that I fulfilled the task I was able to set up many international equestrian competitions. Q3 - Why did you decide to organise a WDM event in Lier? Since 2013 I live in Belgium and I wanted to set up a nice event here too. Jumping is popular here but dressage is catching up. We are now busy organising a competition at a beautiful location which I hope everyone will like. Q4 - Why did VIAN Group decide to become a WDM sponsor? VIAN Group has sponsored many dressage competitions over the past 10 years. We always did this in Ukraine but wanted to do this at an international level. WDM is the only circuit of 5 star competitions in the world. We wanted to be part of it and to provide a positive contribution to the sport of dressage. 19

EXCELLENT DRESSAGE SALES
WDM GUIDE
Every year in April, Excellent Dressage Sales is held at Culitsrode Estate in Hooge Mierde, The Netherlands. A unique cooperation of five big names in the horse business started in 2013 and became very successful. Gertjan van Olst, Joop van Uytert, Nico Witte, Tim Coomans and Joep Schellekens are the team behind Excellent Dressage Sales.
E
DS sells quality dressage horses. You will find youngsters, broodmares, approved stallions and proven top horses in every collection of EDS. Partner Joop van Uytert explains the main idea behind the auction: “All year long we are very busy with clients coming over to our stables. We are driving around with them to find the right horse, but sometimes it turned out that the right horse was not available at the moment the client was over. The client went home, without a horse. Then the idea arose to have one selling point a year: an auction. Together with Joep Schellekens we found the right business partners in Tim Coomans, Gertjan van Olst and Nico Witte. The auction was born!’’

mous stallion: Jazz. His wife Madeleine Witte is a member of the Dutch Dressage team with Wynton. Tim Coomans is behind Ravel, Lancet, Ziësto and many more Grand Prix horses. In daily life he is the owner of ‘Tim Coomans Dutch Sport Horses’. Gertjan van Olst excels in all facets of modern dressage and breeding. His wife Anne took part in five Olympic Games, riding for her native land Denmark. Gertjan was founder of the famous stallions Negro and Lord Leatherdale. The last but not least partner of EDS is Joep Schellekens. Husband of Imke Schellekens-Bartels and working at Academy Bartels. Academy Bartels also produced a lot of Grand Prix horses such as Barbria, Sunrise and Toots.
“One selling point a year: an auction”
The team behind EDS has proven itself over the years. It has found horses for top riders such as Anky van Grunsven, Edward Gal, Tineke and Imke Bartels, Ulla Salzgeber, Steffen Peters and many others. Joop van Uytert is owner of a big stud in Heerewaarden. He has produced many approved stallions. Nico Witte has ‘Witte Stables’ and is the man behind one of the world’s most fa-
We asked what Nico Witte thinks about the team: “Now we are working together to sell our horses through this auction. We have joined forces. My motto is ‘pro’s for pro’s. We believe that we are stronger together. It worked out pretty well. We became a successful team that still can improve but we are on the right track!” 21

EXCELLENT HORSES
‘‘We want to sell horses that we would like to train ourselves. It wouldn’t be a shame if they are not sold since the quality of the horses is good enough to keep in your own stable. Sometimes it is difficult to decide to sell the exceptional horses in your stable, but we want to make a statement: We are going to sell high quality horses. In the meantime it gives me peace to work towards one sales moment. You will get all customers concentrated in a few days, in the wonderful environment of the Culitsrode Estate, where we can provide the best service possible”, Gertjan van Olst says. Every year the most promising youngsters, but also some proven Grand Prix horses, are for sale in EDS. 22

2
What is the biggest eye-opener your trainer has taught you? “At the moment I am working a lot with video recordings and having various horsepeople watch a training session. Everyone has their own ‘hobbyhorse’ so you get a lot of input, tools and information. Fantastically educational!”

How would you describe the character of your current competition horse? “Jerich Parzival is a true professor. He can‘t quite talk, but knows exactly how to make it clear what he wants! If, for example, you 24

5
What was your most favourite holiday so far and what did you do? “Holiday? Every day is holiday! I do what I enjoy. It is still my hobby, even if it has now got a little out of hand hihi. I love being around the yard: training and caring for the horses feels like holiday for me.”

What is the biggest eye-opener your trainer has taught you? “Carl Hester is my trainer for many years now. I think that we have a very good system with our training. And most importantly, our horses are happy horses. They enjoy what they do but also get time to have their relaxation.”

If you could have a superpower, what would it be? “Mmh... Never thought about this... I would find it interesting to test several things: flying, endless power, to need no sleep etc. But in the end I think it’s good to have no superpower!”

What was your most favourite holiday so far and what did you do? “That is definitely my holiday to South Africa! We did a safari on horseback. Haha, that is how much I love horses. I even ride on holiday. It was amazing to get so close to all the wild animals and to be somehow a part of nature. It was magic!”

Eurosport & Equestrian sports
2015
My role is to develop the turnover and portfolio of clients in sport event organisations and international sporting federations. I am responsible for developing strong relationships and partnerships with rights holders across several key services: broadcast and promotion, commercial activations for events partners, and TV production and distribution. Finally, I am responsible for the development for Eurosport Events and have a key focus on equestrian sports.
What is your vision of the sports industry for the coming five years? Sport remains one of few media properties that will succeed in delivering large audiences; therefore I believe it will maintain a high value in the market. Digital players will keep evolving and will enjoy an increased market share. I predict that there will be a continuing trend of consolidation within the sports media landscape. However, a combination of strong TV exposure supported by digital promotion will remain the most attractive offer to sport event stakeholders. Eurosport, which is now part of the Discovery Communications’ international network, should have an ever more important role for rights holders.
Do you have the goal to increase broadcasting equestrian events? Equestrian sports have been part of Eurosport for 25 years and in the last 10 years it has enjoyed an increased share of voice. With over 150 hours of broadcast time, it is one of our top 10 most covered sports. And we cover the very best it has to offer - from the FEI official competitions, to high class jumping and dressage series. Equestrian sports are in our DNA and we believe we deliver an ever-increasing passionate and engaged audience.

Firstly through our audience reach: Eurosport is the largest sports media platform in Europe. We reach over 136 million homes across 54 European countries and we broadcast in 20 different languages. Beyond Europe we are increasing our footprint and now reach over 16 countries in Asia/Pacific. Our primary objective is to broadcast the very best content to the largest number of viewers possible. We have unrivalled expertise and capability in TV production, digital and TV promotion and worldwide media rights distribution. And beyond our own reach, we have developed a network of broadcast partners that enables us to guarantee the sport additional international 36

exposure. This exposure is vital for both the organisers and partners, and also for the national and international federations. Our innovative and industry-leading TV production team are constantly looking at new techniques and best practice to enhance and optimise the viewer experience. It is in our common interest to leverage industry standards when it comes to live production and edited content and I believe that this is why the World Dressage Masters along with other major jumping 5 stars events see Eurosport as a trusted partner. Finally, we provide large and high-quality activation solutions for partners, delivering large and impactful solutions for the brands associated with equestrian sports. We believe this ability to provide the largest scope of benefits for equestrian sport key players makes a considerable difference to the industry.
What equestrian events will be broadcasted on Eurosport in 2015?
WDM GUIDE
Eurosport will cover the very best FEI competitions, including World Cup, Nation’s Cup, European Championships as well as World Cup Dressage both live and delayed. We will also broadcast the best 5 stars jumping events series or one-off events such as (but not restricted to) the Longines Global Champions Tour, the Rolex Masters, the Longines Indoor Masters and the Saut Hermès.
2015
What are the geographical developments? It is already well-regarded and recognised across Europe and we see this growth in other regions of the world. In the Middle East, for example, they are enjoying a higher profile and delivering greater performances in jumping. Asia is growing too and we are seeing Russia and the Eastern European countries getting back in their saddles. We are seeing some exciting new talent coming from the USA and this will add to the demand and global fanbase of equestrian sports. A capacity to attract and retain strong partners that can help and support is also key. The luxury sector has made a considerable and important contribution to the development of equestrian sports. But as they continue to grow, equestrian sports must look to attract other sectors with the same impact. Finally, the sport needs stars, visible and recognised ambassadors who can champion equestrian sports and drive engagement. More could and should be done to exploit higher profile talent and all stakeholders can play an important role here. The World Dressage Masters is reaching around 1 million viewers per event on Eurosport. These results are very promising and bode well for the sport growing in coming years. The World Dressage Masters contributes to the overall promotion of dressage as a sport and their professionalism contributes to its growth and development. We are very happy and proud to have been their media partner during the past 4 years. 37

Patrik Kittel RIDER & BUSINESSMAN
WDM GUIDE
Since the first edition of the World Dressage Masters, Swedish Olympic rider Patrik Kittel has always been an enthusiastic participant. Competing at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 with Floresco, the rider experienced his biggest equestrian successes with the KWPN-approved stallion Scandic. Now, with Scandic celebrating his sixteenth birthday this year, Kittel is already planning ahead, preparing both young horses and riders to join him at the highest ranks of the sport.

“W
hen I first learned about the WDM, I immediately thought it was a great idea”, Kittel starts, “To have a dressage initiative alongside a series for show jumpers is not only attractive for the audience to follow, but also for the dressage riders themselves. Thus far, the shows have proven to be very well organised and it has been a pleasure to have been able to compete at them.” “Besides”, Kittel now laughs, “The prize money has also been very attractive. Especially for us, dressage riders, who are not as used to winning big amounts of prize money as our show jumping colleagues are!” Although born and raised in Sweden, Kittel has been based in Germany for the past 20 years. Since 2005 he resides in Nottuln, in the province of Westphalia. Here, he and his wife Lyndal run a competition and trading yard as well as a training centre for both horses and riders. “I find it too hard to choose between one of these aspects. I love showing horses, but also training 51
2015 WDM GUIDE 52
them; bringing them on to a higher level. The same can be said about coaching students. It’s great to watch them improve and this year, three of my students were even able to compete at the WDM themselves!” COMPETING & COACHING
Competing yourself and in the meantime coaching your students, especially at the same venue, can be a daunting experience, Kittel admits. “But credits must be given to my wife, who is wonderful at organising, and my team both at home and at competitions”, the rider says. At a competition the main focus lies first of all on Kittel’s own horses and performance. “My students know this”, he explains, “Off course, our training schedule depends on the times I need to compete, but on average I try do train my own horses first before I focus on my students.”
TIME MANAGEMENT
One would expect a busy man like Kittel to have a very strict time plan, but this happens not to be the case. “Oh no, I stopped watching the clock years ago!”, he exclaims, “Once you set yourself a certain time for a chore you’ll get rushed. Instead I want to take the time I need for something. This means my working days start early, which can be tough, but in the end it leaves me with enough hours in the day to do whatever I think is necessary.” “You know”, he continues, “What the audience see is a rider looking elegant on his horse. And this is the way it’s supposed to be! But what one doesn’t see is the amount of labour and time that is put into before it can look as elegant as it does.” “If I really had to choose between competing, trading, coaching students and training horses, I’d always go for just riding the horse”, Kittel admits,
2015 WDM GUIDE
“I’ve reached this level of the sport, simply because I love riding horses. This started in my youth, when I had a girlfriend with a pony. I rode it once and loved it straight away. For a time I figured out what I liked doing best with horses. I soon found out show jumping was not for me. But dressage was!” Kittel comes from a non-horsey background, and literally had to find his own way in the sport. “My mother was a doctor, but we never had money to buy expensive horses. My first horse costed €1.700,- and to make my way in the horse world I rode all sorts of horses for clients; riding horses, but also trotters and Norwegian Fjords. Had I been given the time, I would still opt riding these ‘normal’ horses. For sure! You should never forget where you come from!” SCANDIC
Yet the horse that would change Kittel’s life was far from what one would call a ‘normal’ horse. “Scandic, although he isn’t the easiest ride, was the horse that enabled me to break through at the highest level of dressage”, says Kittel about the KWPN-approved stallion, “Never have I met a horse that learned the Grand Prix movements as quickly as Scandic. He made me the rider I am today”, Kittel appraises the sixteen year old chestnut.“Without Scandic I would not be where I am now. He has given me opportunities no other horse would have been able to.” FAMILY SUPPORT
After a professional career, already covering a timespan of twenty years, Kittel calls himself a ‘very lucky man’. “I have a lovely family and a lovely wife who supports me wherever she can. I cannot look into the future and what it will hold for me. And to be honest, I don’t really want to know. ‘Seize the day’ is what I always aim for.” “I like my job, training, riding and selling horses. What more can I wish for?”, he asks out loud, “In life it’s basically all about having fun in what you’re allowed to do. I try to see everything from a positive side. There are a lot of different people in the world, all with their own opinion. I tend not to listen too closely to them; you always have to figure out what works best for you.” Patrik Kittel obviously aims for competing at the WDM 2015 series. “Last season I competed at all four shows, and I’m looking forward to see at which locations the competitions will be held this season.” 53
Jerich International & Adelinde Cornelissen
2015 WDM GUIDE
HERBERT JERICH
Equestrianism is hardly known for its financial low maintenance. The financial security a sponsor offers is often overlooked, but in fact can never be praised enough. Austrian businessman Herbert Jerich is such a sponsor. With his support, Dutch rider Adelinde Cornelissen can fully focus on her equestrian career.
H
erbert Jerich is the owner and founder of Jerich International, a logistics company based in Austria with auxiliary branches throughout the world. In his, admittedly free time he is a lover of the sport of dressage, a passion he shares with other members of his family. “My wife Marianne runs a yard in Gleisdorf, where she keeps 40 horses from foal to Grand Prix level”, Mr Jerich explains, “And my granddaughter is also an enthusiastic pony rider. Last summer she competed with her pony at the European Championships in Ireland.” Back in 2009, in order to give the Austrian dressage world a boost, Herbert Jerich went looking for a dressage coach to help the local Austrian riders. “I asked several people in the dressage world, when someone mentioned Adelinde. At first I was amazed, and also a bit hesitant, for she was the number one rider of the world at that time! Yet, my contact assured me I should give Adelinde a call, so I did.” DUTCH INSTRUCTIONS
“The Dutch riders are considered to be the best coaches in the world. My granddaughter receives her instruction from Nicolette van Lierop, who’s also from The Netherlands. But when I first met Adelinde I realised that she is not only a very successful rider, but also a very kind lady. This I found enough reason to approach her with a sponsor deal. She is a very talented sportswoman and by helping her financially I want to make sure she has every chance to perform at the highest possible level of the sport”, Mr Jerich says, although he admits he doesn’t see as much of Adelinde as he’d wish to. “I have a very busy schedule, so unfortunately I’m not able to attend all the shows in which Adelinde performs. However, Adelinde and I share weekly emails and telephone calls. Moreover, one of our business branches is situated in Germany, near the Dutch border. Whenever I have a meeting planned there, I always permit myself a few hours off to see Adelinde at her yard.” 54

JERICH PARZIVAL
Jerich Parzival, Adelinde’s top ride, turns eighteen later this year. Although still going strong, this means his heydays are most likely
behind him. “It’s important for Adelinde to be given the time to bring on a new horse”, says Mr Jerich about the Olympic silver medallist, “We fully understand this and don’t consider this to be a problem. Instead, we try to support her by offering her some of our own Grand Prix horses, so in the future she will be able to retain her position at the top of the leader board.” To Herbert Jerich and his wife Marianne Adelinde means more than just a sportswoman who happens to be very successful in what she does. “No, Adelinde and I”, Mr Jerich says reassuringly, “We understand each other perfectly. She knows there is absolutely no reason for her to fear losing her sponsor deal. If it’s up to me Adelinde and Jerich International will be connected for many years to come.”
2015 WDM GUIDE
Although dressage and logistics seem worlds apart Herbert Jerich sees the advantages of advertising in the equestrian world. “For us, supporting Adelinde was our first step in international sponsoring. Thus far we had only focussed on local sports teams. Of course it’s worth sponsoring someone. Other companies might choose to support a football team, or a racing team. But our family loves horses, so for us it was an obvious decision to look for a potential dressage rider.” “And I’m sure our company benefits from it”, Mr Jerich continues, “When seeing our logo on the dressage pad when Adelinde performs in the ring people will have a positive association with Jerich International.” “And of course, I love watching her compete”, Herbert Jerich gladly admits, “I try not to miss the biggest shows, like the European Championships which will be held this year. I find attending competitions so much fun. One meets old horse friends, and new ones. Sitting alongside the dressage ring provides an excellent opportunity to discuss matters. And of course, in the evening we drink a beer or two at the riders’ party!”
Herbert Jerich concludes: “I appreciate Adelinde being such an ambitious person. Without this aspect in her character I very much doubt that she would have reached this level of dressage in the first place. It’s a characteristic I, as a businessman, certainly recognise. Yes, we are somewhat alike in character. Maybe it’s an aspect one needs in order to make a success of life, whether your life means business or sports!”

JONKER PRANGINS
Switzerland’s next generation
WDM GUIDE
TED JONKER
2015
Ted Jonker runs Ecurie Ted Jonker in Switzerland. The now Swiss citizen is the hostess of the WDM NextGen Event Prangins this June. WDM NextGens goal is to give young talented dressage riders the opportunity to gain experience at high quality shows. The stable is a true family business, run by Ted Jonker and her daughters Pamela and Jacky. Ted has a clear vision: “We must attract youth and create opportunities for them, in order to bring dressage in Switzerland to the next level.”
T
ed Jonker was born and raised in The Netherlands, but in 1984 her husband was sent to Hong Kong for his work. Until that time Ted Jonker was practicing the sport of dressage actively and she competed at the highest national levels. Leaving the horses and dressage sport was therefore not easy. Especially since the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club was focused on racehorses. However, Ted Jonker found a way to continue her passion. She retrained one of the racehorses into a dressage horse and even won the 1998 International Haig Dressage Championships with it. After four years in Hong Kong, Ted Jonker and her husband
resided in The Netherlands again, but not for long. Two years later they had to move again, this time to Geneva. Determined not to leave her horses behind again, Ted took four horses to Switzerland. “Here I faced a major difficulty, in Switzerland you cannot keep your horse in your backyard, so to speak. Horses must be held at professional stables and riding schools. However, these riding schools take on an immense scale. They include 80-100 boxes easily. Renting a few stables was of course a possibility, but I did not feel at home at these big properties. On the other hand, I never had the intention to start a stable of 59
JONKER PRANGINS
2015 WDM GUIDE
my own, let alone one of such a size. Then my husband had the chance to acquire this estate, it was a pure coincidence. The property is located next to the lake and includes 20 boxes. I did not have any previous experience with running a professional stable, but it is less difficult when you love what you do. ECURIE TED JONKER
“Our stable is a true family business. We are in this together. Through passion it has expanded and grown over the years.” The Ecurie Ted Jonker property is phenomenal. Situated next to Lake Geneva, it features a spectacular view. As a part of the famous Prangins estate it has a rich history. Taking the name from its residents in the 17th and 18th centuries, the baronial family Guiger de Prangins, the estate was later home to Voltaire and Joseph Bonaparte, the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1847 Villa de Prangins and Ferme du Domaine Impérial were built by the Bonaparte family. Almost 200 years later, the stables and the local school came into the possession of the Jonker family. The stable has preserved all its historical features, although updated to modern standards. PASSION
Ted Jonker has a clear vision: “I have always been very passionate about dressage and I think it is important that we keep an eye on the next generation. In contrast to The Netherlands, in Switzerland the sport is still for an elite group. As a Swiss citizen and dressage enthusiast, I think this needs to change. Switzerland used to have great dressage riders, however we do not have them anymore. On the other hand, there are plenty of passionate people. On my arrival here I noticed that dressage was also perceived as an individualistic sport. When I entered a riding school, most of the riders had different trainers and no one really knew each other. So I started organising a competition and I set the rule that every rider of
60
JONKER PRANGINS
2015 WDM GUIDE
my stable had the obligation to fulfil a role in this. Giving one another a helping hand, created a nice atmosphere and everyone got to know one other better. Every month a trainer comes over to give lessons, and the others have to watch. This is not solely for learning purposes, but also to create a bond. The funny thing is that they motivate each other to get the most out of themselves. That is what we do here. We are not aiming at satisfying a result, we want to compete at the highest level possible. Diversity also adds to this, for this reason I always try to find the balance between every age category and background. Thus it ranges from 11 to 63 years old, from children to housewives. We started with only beginner horses and riders, now we have 5 M-level horses and 4 S-level horses. All the riders and horses started at zero and have come this far together. FAMILIAL
When the World Dressage Masters approached me and asked what I thought of a WDM competition at our estate, I immediately thought of a youngster competition. The NextGen competitions suits our vision and mission, as it targets young talents that are looking for experience. We believe we can be the bridge between the youth in our region that is looking for opportunities, and the WDM. Hopefully the youth will see this competition and think to themselves: this is something I want to pursue too. In our region there are barely any occasions to participate in regular level competitions, let alone at Grand-Prix level. We must give the youth the chance to gain experience, ultimately this will open windows of opportunity for the next generation.

NÜRNBERGER BURG-POKAL
Nürnberger Burg-Pokal, in search of excellence
WDM GUIDE
HANS-PETER SCHMIDT
2015
The Nürnberger Burg-Pokal is a competition for seven- to nine-year-old horses. Hans-Peter Schmidt, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Nürnberger Versicherungsgruppe, is the initiator of this competition and explains why the holistic education is the main driver behind the success of this competition. “Dressage is about being a responsible partner to your horse.” 65
NÜRNBERGER BURG-POKAL
2015 WDM GUIDE 66
H
ans-Peter Schmidt is passionate about the Nürnberger Burg-Pokal, that was developed in 1992. Nürnberger Burg-Pokal is designed for young talents, horses between the ages of seven to nine years old. Hans-Peter Schmidt explains the drive behind this competition: “By focusing on the holistic education of young horses we provide a positive impact on dressage principles and training techniques.” The successes of former Nürnberger Burg-Pokal participants have not gone unnoticed. Young talents that took
part in this competition often establish fantastic results in the most respected international championships. The first success was the gold medal at the Sydney Olympic Games for Chacamo, Nürnberger Burg-Pokal winner in 1997. More recent accomplishments are the results achieved at the London Olympic Games and the 2013 European Championships by the German national team, featuring solely
horses that competed in the final of the Nürnberger Burg-Pokal. Hans-Peter Schmidt adds: “Previous young Nürnberger Burg-Pokal talents have proven themselves worthy at the highest competitions, such as the Olympic Games, the World Equestrian Games and the European Dressage Championships. Since 1999 participants of the Nürnberger Burg-Pokal have won 12 gold, 10 silver and 9 bronze medals at the aforementioned championships.”
NÜRNBERGER BURG-POKAL
RESPONSIBLE PARTNERSHIP
CONTINUOUS SEARCH FOR EXCELLENCE
Hans-Peter Schmidt recognizes one shared mission of both the World Dressage Masters and the Nürnberger Burg-Pokal: “We are both united through a continuous search for excellence. In essence, both competitions benefit from one another. The World Dressage Masters attracts the most accomplished horse and rider teams. The Nürnberger Burg-Pokal is dedicated to top-riders and their most talented horses. The Nürnberger Burg-Pokal is a starting point for young horses and the World Dressage Masters is a goal they can aspire to.” The main difference between the World Dressage Masters and the Nürnberger Burg-Pokal is their operating and targeting region. Where the World Dressage Masters is
clearly an international event, the Nürnberger Burg-Pokal is nationally oriented. Hans-Peter Schmidt: We are proud of having established an internationally recognized dressage competition for seven- to nine-year-old horses. As a national enterprise our focus of attention is the growth of Nürnberger Burg-Pokal in Germany. We are not planning an international expansion in the near future. But of course we are very happy that so many of “our” horses turn out to be international champions.”
2015 WDM GUIDE
Behind these great successes we find a strong foundation of respect towards the horse. HansPeter Schmidt emphasizes that the teamwork between horse and rider is crucial in dressage: “Nürnberger Burg-Pokal highlights the principle of partnership between a rider and his horse. The test St. George Special helps to develop talented young horses up to the highest classes of competition. Dressage is not only about continuous work, leadership, patience and commitment. It also means being a responsible partner to the horse – an animal that humanity owes so much. From early on, horses have been the carrier of information, people and goods. Without the help of horses, our society would not be as advanced as it is today.”
FUTURE
As an entrepreneur, Hans-Peter Schmidt notices several parallels between the development, structure and drive of the Nürnberger BurgPokal and Nürnberger Versicherungsgruppe. “Future success depends on developing young talents today. We can only remain the world’s most successful dressage nation, if we invest in future generations. For us, being a rider means being a partner, who helps and supports, who guides and shapes. We live this same philosophy in our company. Nürnberger is a partner to its employees and helps them grow as individuals and professionals. And we are partner to our customers by providing fair and fitting solutions for their insurance needs,” Hans-Peter Schmidt concludes.

“Valegro immediately had the wow-factor, even as a foal” JOOP & MAAR TJE HANSE
Valegro is a true superstar. Just like Avicii and Robbie Williams he has innumerable fans and is often on tour. But this international star on four legs was born in The Netherlands. He came into the world in Joop and Maartje Hanse’s yard in Burgh-Haamstede, in the province of Zeeland. In this interview they tell of the effect this exceptional horse has had on them. 71

nyone who has ever met this spontaneous couple doesn’t forget them quickly. They talk eagerly about their successful breeding product. Because, be honest, this is exactly what every breeder wants isn’t it? Joop says: “Yes, of course, it is fantastic to be part of this. Valegro was actually a very striking foal. He immediately had the wow factor.”

out. Despite the fact that he is rather small Carl bought him and took him back to England. It immediately clicked.” Carl and Valegro became the UK Champion of four-year-old dressage horses. Charlotte – Carl’s pupil – then took over the ride and, to this day, forms a successful partnership with him.
It doesn’t take long before Maartje joins in the conversation: “We chose Negro and made the agreement with Gertjan van Olst that he would have first offer on the foal. But only if it was a colt foal. Gertjan was very quick to come and see the foal. Fifteen minutes later the sale was completed.”
The couple proudly tells of the trips that they have made, thanks to Valegro. Joop begins: “We went to watch the European Championships in Denmark, the Olympic Games in England and the World Championship in France. In London especially the stadium exploded, that was for us as breeders a very special moment.” But the first time that Joop and Maartje saw Valegro again was in 2011. Maartje: “We saw him again in Zwolle. We also met Carl and Charlotte, that was fantastic. They are such lovely people! We were allowed to go to his stable and our granddaughter was allowed to sit on him to have her photo taken.”
Shortly after, Maartje was involved in a car crash which meant that she had to take it gently for a few months. It was a blessing in disguise because it meant that she could spend more time with Valegro. The Zeeuwse recalls: “Oh, how I pampered him. I went and sat with him all day long. After five months he went to Gertjan for bringing on.”
“Oh, how I pampered him. I went and sat with him all day long.”
Valegro was a young foal, he was actually born on 5th July. Partly due to this he was rejected by the group and ended up behind in his development. But he recovered and was shown as a 2.5 year-old at the KWPN stallion grading in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Joop recalls: “He was immediately rejected due to his dam-line, as there is too little sport-blood in it. So he went back to Den Hout. Shortly after that, Gertjan sold him but the sale fell through at the last minute.” Maartje takes over from her husband: “Anne van Olst – Gertjan’s wife, had known Carl Hester for years. When he was visiting one time she said: try him

The WBFSH twice invited them to receive a beautiful, luxurious watch due to their breeding product being number 1 in the ranking. Joop shows off his watch and says: “Look, we received this in Qatar from Princess Benedicte of Denmark in person. That doesn’t happen every day!” Maartje beams and says: “I received this ladies watch in Geneva. That was really nice. With champagne, as that wasn’t allowed in Qatar, haha.” They have, as yet, never been to visit Carl’s yard – Valegro’s home base. Would they like to go? Maartje: “Yes, of course. We are planning to go this year. But we just don’t know when. Oh well, we should just do it. Pack our cases and go!”
