2014 MEDIA GUIDE
2014 SEASON PREVIEW EAGLE MEN
The 2014 Embry-Riddle men’s cross country team is poised to have one of the most successful seasons in program history, returning the majority of last year’s Sun Conference championship-winning squad. Head Coach Mike Rosolino is excited to see what this year’s group can accomplish in ERAU’s final season as an NAIA member. “We return nine of our top 10 from last year,” Rosolino said. “This is one of the deepest teams we’ve ever had here, and I really believe we could see a return to being one of the top teams in the country. This team has the potential to be the best in the history of Embry-Riddle cross country.” This year’s team features 11 returners from last year’s squad, including six of the seven Embry-Riddle finishers from the NAIA National Championships and nine of the top 10 ERAU finishers from The Sun Conference Championships.
Vincent Bett Senior Vincent Bett is expected to lead the way for the Blue and Gold this season. Bett, an All-Conference performer in 2012 and 2013, was the top Eagle finisher in seven of the eight races he competed in and was the top ERAU finisher at the NAIA National Championships (Nov. 23). He clocked a 24:29.71 at the Mountain Dew Invitational last season (Sept. 14), making him the third-fastest Eagle runner in school history. “Vincent did a great job for us last year after we lost Evans Kirwa,” Rosolino remarked. “I expect him to continue to be our leader both on and off the course this season.” Alec Hernandez will again be looked to as a topthree runner this year after consistently finishing as one of the top three Eagles throughout the 2013 season. Hernandez, a senior, established himself as the seventh-fastest runner in ERAU history at the 2013 Sun Conference Championships (Nov. 9) with a time of 25:08.08. Also expected to be a top-three runner is Paul McKenna. McKenna earned All-Conference honors in 2013 and consistently finished amongst the top three on the Eagles’ squad. McKenna became the sixth-fastest runner in Blue and Gold history with a 25:01.65 at the Sand Shark Invitational last year (Oct. 26). Rosolino expects to see senior Jacob Dordick, juniors Ryan Larson and Jamin Mays and sophomore Matt Graves to be battling each other to earn the distinction of being top-five runners, which should push all four of them to get better all season long.

es. She also qualified for the NAIA National Championships, finishing just 1.3 seconds ahead of Ross at the national meet. Tafoya become the 13th-fastest runner in school history with a time of 19:14.12 at the Sand Shark Invitational (Oct. 26).
Paul McKenna Dordick finished with six top-five ERAU finishes last year, including being the third Eagle to cross the line at the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic (Sept. 21). He was also the fifth Eagle to finish at the NAIA National Championships (Nov. 23) with a time of 27:23.86. Larson recorded seven top-six finishes on the team last season, highlighted by his performance at the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic (Sept. 21) where he was the fifth and final scoring runner for the Blue and Gold. Mays ran in eight meets for the Eagles in 2013, finishing seventh overall and fourth on the team at the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic (Sept. 21). Mays broke the 26-minute mark for the first time in his career with a 25:58.30 at the Sand Shark Invitational (Oct. 26), moving him into 15th place on the all-time fastest runners list in program history. Graves competed in seven meets last year, highlighted by his 24th-place finish, fourth on the team, at the South Florida Invitational (Sept. 6). Also returning for the Eagles are seniors Dalton L’Heureux and Jason Riggs, juniors Palmer Lintz and Paul Meesala, and sophomore Andrew Carosi, while the newcomers include freshmen Andrew Carpenter, James Fell, Adam Lawrence, DeVontae Persha and Keneth J Pineiro-Collazo.
Aleiyah Ross LeVine had an outstanding freshman campaign, earning top-five team finishes in six meets. She was the third Eagle to finish at the South Florida Invitational, where her time of 19:17.97 established her as the 15th-fastest Eagle in school history. Along with Ross, the rest of the senior class will be asked to shoulder a lot of the leadership this season. Lauren Eschbach, Brittany King, Rebecca Love and Jaena Smith will all be asked to contribute as potential top-five runners as well.
Martina Tafoya
EAGLE WOMEN
The Embry-Riddle women’s cross country team comes in to 2014 looking to reclaim The Sun Conference championship, a title that the Eagles lost last year for the first time in eight years. “We’ve improved from last year overall,” Rosolino said. “We return six of our top eight, but losing Ellie Staker is big for us. Our team is composed almost entirely of seniors and freshmen, which is an odd situation. Obviously we expect the seniors to be leaders on and off the course, but the success of this year’s team will depend heavily on what the freshmen class does.” This year’s squad features seven returners, led by senior Aleiyah Ross, junior Martina Tafoya and sophomore Marina LeVine. Ross was a top-three finisher for the Eagles in the team’s final four meets and was one of three team members to qualify individually for the NAIA National Championships. Her seventh-place time of 19:16.84 at The Sun Conference Championships (Nov. 9) made her the 14th-fastest runner in program history. Tafoya competed in seven meets for the Eagles, finishing among the top three on the team in four rac-

Eschbach competed in five races last year, finishing as the fourth ERAU runner at the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic in 20:57.22 (Sept. 21). King raced four times for ERAU, clocking a season best of 21:32.29 at The Sun Conference Championships. Love was twice the second-finishing Eagle, including a blistering time of 19:06.28 at the season-opening South Florida Invitational (Sept. 6), a time that places her as the 10th-fastest runner in program history. Smith competed in five meets last year, finishing as the sixth Eagle to cross the line at the conference meet (Nov. 9) in 20:31.06. Newcomers to the squad this year consist of redshirt freshman and track All-American Maite Moscoso and six true freshmen, including Eliza Gazda, Alexandria Meneses, Annette Morrison, Alex Orr, Brianna Paczynski and Audrey Parios.

Embry-Riddle
Head Coach (2003-Present)
Over the last 12 cross country seasons, Mike Rosolino’s harriers have dominated Sun Conference competition. The men’s team has nine league titles to its credit, while the women’s team topped the conference standings in for seven consecutive seasons from 2006-12. The Eagles’ run began in 2005 when the Embry-Riddle men captured the program’s first league and NAIA Regional titles and made their first team appearance at the NAIA National Championship. A year later, Rosolino’s harriers repeated that performance and were joined by the ERAU women who claimed their first regional and conference crowns. Rosolino has been named The Sun Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year 15 times in his Embry-Riddle career - eight times for the men and seven on the women’s side – and the NAIA Region XIV Coach of the Year four times. He picked up his latest league coaching accolade in 2013 after leading the men to The Sun Conference crown and a 16th-place finish at the NAIA National Championships. Rosolino also saw Ellie Staker become to first women’s cross country runner in program history to earn NAIA All-America accolades in 2013. The men took fifth-place overall at the NAIA National Championship in 2009, with three runners earning AllAmerica honors for the first time in program history, while the women finished 16th that same season. Rosolino coached Evans Kirwa to his second All-America honor in 2011, the first Eagle runner to accomplish the feat. In 12 years with the Eagle cross country programs, Rosolino has coached 99 All-Conference performers (50 men and 49 women). In 2005, Rosolino was tasked with launching the track and field program at Embry-Riddle. His penchant for success is evident in track and field as well as he has led the men to seven conference championships and the women to five league titles in the last nine seasons. Rosolino has coached numerous conference champions, 146 NAIA All-Americans and six NAIA National Champions who have won 15 individual national championships: Beth McCubbin (1000m: 2008, 2009), Crystal Bardge (100m hurdles: 2011, 2012; 60m hurdles: 2011), Sam Vazquez (1000m: 2011), Nicole Bonk (3000m Race Walk: 2012, 2013; 5000m Race Walk: 2012), Reta Woodard (Weight Throw: 2012, 2014; Hammer Throw: 2013, 2014) and Mike Edwards (High Jump: Indoor 2013, Outdoor 2013). Along with training top athletes, Rosolino sets the highest standards for his athletes in the classroom. In the past 12 seasons, he has coached 70 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and his teams have also consistently earned NAIA Scholar Team recognition, including four in 2012-13. Rosolino came to Embry-Riddle from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., where he spent two years on the coaching staff for the Blue Hose. He began his stint at Presbyterian as an assistant coach and was elevated to the head job after just six months. Despite the brevity of his tenure with the program, Rosolino guided the Blue Hose to their
best finishes in school history, producing two South Atlantic Conference Runners of the Year and a Freshman of the Year in the process. Prior to earning his position within the Presbyterian athletic department, Rosolino spent four academic years (1997-01) as the Director of Residence Life in Clinton. He also served as Resident Director for one year (1996-97) while attending graduate school. A former standout runner for Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., Rosolino helped the Lynx to three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) titles from 199395. In his final season, he assumed the role of team captain and finished 11th overall at the SCAC Championship meet. Rosolino also ran two seasons for the Rhodes track team, competing in the middle to long distance races. In 1995, he finished fifth at the SCAC Championships in the steeplechase.
An Academic All-American for Rhodes in 1994 and 1995, Rosolino was a National Merit finalist and earned distinction as a National Science Scholar. Rosolino earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Rhodes in 1996. He went on to receive his Master of Education degree from the University of South Carolina in 1998 with an emphasis on student personnel services. Rosolino also holds a Level II certification from USA Track and Field. He earned a second Master’s degree in Pastoral Studies from Loyola College in New Orleans in 2009. Rosolino and his wife Carrie have been married for 17 years and reside in Port Orange with daughter Lynnlee and son Tanner.

2014 MEDIA GUIDE
CONFERENCE AFFILIATIONS The Sun Conference is heading into its 25th season of competition and continues to be one of the most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The institutions in the conference believe in strong educational commitment combined with balanced athletic competition. Originally formed in March 1990 as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (FIAC), The Sun Conference was established as a conference for small independent institutions within the NAIA. The name “Florida Sun Conference” was adopted in 1992. The league unveiled its new name, “The Sun Conference” on August 18, 2008 to be inclusive of member schools from Georgia and South Carolina. Under the guidance of commissioner Mark Pope, the league sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and field and women’s volleyball. The Sun Conference has proven to be one of the top leagues in the NAIA with its teams consistently being recognized among the nation’s best. In 2013-14, the conference placed two teams in the top 25 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Race with Embry-Riddle placing fourth and SCAD Savannah finishing in 24th place. Sun Conference teams are perennial contenders for national titles and 29 teams made national tournament appearances in 2013-14. SCAD finished as the national runner-up in women’s golf, while Embry-Riddle earned runnerup finishes in both men’s and women’s tennis. In addition to the tennis and golf national runner-up finishes, the league racked up numerous individual national titles. SCAD’s Theresa Schmaus won the ITA/NAIA national singles title while Embyr-Riddle’s Kristina Marova and Hui-I Huang won the doubles crown. On the men’s side, ERAU completed the sweep as Deni Zmak took home the national singles title and teamed up with Simon Felix to win the doubles cown. In track and field, Embry-Riddle’s Reta Woodard won both in the indoor weight and outdoor hammer throw national titles. Women’s golf saw SCAD’s Alazne Urizar earn individual medalist honors, while Northwood’s Helen Lynskey was tabbed as the NSCAA/NAIA Women’s Soccer Player of the Year. In 2013-14 alone, 84 student-athletes from the league were named NAIA All-Americans, while 167 TSC athletes were also named Daktronics-NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes. The roots of The Sun Conference date back to 1990 when the league was originally formed as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Original membership consisted of Embry-Riddle, Flagler, Florida Memorial, Nova (now Nova Southeastern), Palm Beach Atlantic, St. Thomas, Webber International and Warner Southern. The league grew to nine members with the addition of Northwood in 1994. Between 2002 and 2006, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic and Flagler moved to NCAA II, but the league was able to recruit new members as Savannah College of Art and Design joined in 2004, followed by Edward Waters in 2006. With the addition of the University of South Carolina at Beaufort, Johnson and Wales, Southeastern, Ave Maria and Thomas (Ga.) within the last four years, along with Edward Waters’ move to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, the league membership now stands at 12 schools. Football begins its first season as a league-sponsored sport in the Fall of 2014 and that sport brings with it two associate members in Edward Waters and Point.

Embry-Riddle is a provisional member of the NCAA II Sunshine State Conference as the athletic department transitions from the NAIA to NCAA II. The Eagles began their membership with the SSC on July 1, 2014 and will be provisional members for three years (2014-17). The Eagles will play full SSC schedules in 2015-16 and 2016-17, but will not be eligible for postseason play. As Embry-Riddle continues to move through the NCAA II candidacy process, the Eagles will become full members of the Sunshine State Conference in the summer of 2017.

DAYTONA BEACH
DAYTONA BEACH - HOME OF THE EAGLES Daytona Beach is an ever-changing city of more than 61,000 residents. Located on the “Fun Coast” of Florida, the principal city of Volusia County, it has become one of the premier destination spots in the Southeast Region. Despite its continuous growth, it has maintained the spirit and serenity of a small, close-knit beach community. The city is a year-round family-friendly resort area, which hosts large groups of out-of-towners that descend upon the city for various events, most notably Speedweeks in early February, Bike Week in early March, Biketoberfest in October and Spring Break throughout March. Home to four colleges and universities, Daytona Beach boasts an excellent quality of life and is a city that thrives and celebrates the diversity of its community. Located less than an hour from Orlando and an hour and a half from Jacksonville, Daytona Beach residents have ample opportunity to experience both cities’ entertainment options, including Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, the Orlando Magic and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Daytona Beach continually exhibits its love for sports by hosting numerous local and national athletic events at the Ocean Center and Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The Daytona International Speedway is one of the most recognizable racetracks in the world and features the Daytona 500, Coke Zero 400 and numerous other auto racing events. The LPGA and USTA Florida both claim Daytona Beach as their organizational headquarters.
6

Daytona Beach is located a short, 55-Mile drive away from the Vacation Capital of the World: Orlando, Florida. Orlando is home to Walt Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios, as well as the NBA’s Orlando Magic. Daytona Beach is also just 91 miles from Jacksonville, the 11th-largest city in the United States.
70.4º 200
The average yearly temperature in Daytona Beach is 70.4º F (21.3º C), making for a warm and pleasant climate in which to live. Winters are mild and summers are warm thanks to its location on the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River, an estuary which flows between the beachside and the mainland.
Daytona Beach boasts more than 200 restaurants, including barbecue, Mexican, Oriental, Greek, Indian, Italian, Thai, seafood, Cuban, health and natural foods.

Approximately 34,000 students pursue degrees from among 40 degree programs at residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., and at more than 150 education centers for working professionals in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. Embry-Riddle also offers online coursework. Embry-Riddle’s worldwide reputation for academic excellence draws students from all 50 states and nearly 90 nations. The 185-acre Daytona Beach campus, located next to Daytona Beach International Airport, has 4,600 undergraduate and 610 graduate students. Excellent flying weather and the resort communities surrounding the Daytona Beach campus offer students an outstanding environment in which to study, fly and enjoy numerous recreational and cultural activities. The campus is within an hour’s drive of the Kennedy Space Center and the Space Coast and within easy reach of Orlando and Jacksonville, which offer a menu of arts, culture, theme parks, shopping and professional sports.
History
On Dec. 17, 1925, 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Embry-Riddle Company at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education. After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again in Miami, Fla., as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane maintenance. In the following decades, Embry-Riddle expanded its international outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight training, ground school and technical training programs into one location. With dollars and trucks borrowed from civic leaders, the move to Daytona Beach signaled the rebirth of Embry-Riddle as an accredited university and the start of its odyssey to world-class status.

champions of character
respect • Responsibility • Integrity • Sportsmanship • servant Leadership The Champions of Character initiative was established by the NAIA to help promote the “right thing” by those affiliated with sports both inside and outside the sports setting. In so doing, the organization looks to develop exemplary character and sportsmanship in NAIA competition. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship. This program educates and create awareness of the positive character-building traits afforded by sports and returns integrity to competition at the collegiate and youth levels while impacting all of society. The Embry-Riddle Athletic Department has enthusiastically embraced the implementation of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative. For years the department has sought to instill in student-athletes the very values addressed by the movement. Additionally, the Student-Athlete Leadership Team assists in evaluation and feedback on the overall student-athlete experience. In 2012-13, Embry-Riddle student-athletes, coaches and staff contributed logged 1,953 hours in community service hours.
