2017 2017 MEDIA MEDIA GUIDE GUIDE
Port Orange native and Spruce Creek High School Hall of Famer Kelsi Dunne was named the head coach of the Embry-Riddle softball program in June 2014. In her first season at the helm, Dunne guided the Eagles to a program-record 25 wins, finishing the 2015 campaign 25-21. The Eagles’ 8-8 Sun Conference record was good for fourth in the league’s regular season standings and the Blue and Gold closed out the year with a 2-2 showing at the conference tournament. Dunne also guided some of her players to individual accolades in 2015, including first team All-Conference selections Anna Battison, Kailah Rain and Raquelli Bianco, with Battison and Rain also receiving All-Region recognition from the NFCA. The 2016 season proved to be the best in program history as the Eagles went 35-13 overall, including a 28-6 record at the ERAU Softball Stadium. Embry-Riddle went 17-12 against Sunshine State Conference opponents with the duo of Bianco and Kassidy Simons being named to the NFCA All-Region team. Dunne came to ERAU after serving as an Assistant Coach at Oklahoma State in the 2013 and 2014 seasons. At OSU, Dunne worked primarily with the pitchers and catchers, developing workouts, overseeing practice sessions, developing and implementing pitching game plans with pitch calling during games. She also performed similar duties as a volunteer assistant coach at Mississippi State throughout the 2012 season. Dunne was a standout collegiate player at the University of Alabama where she led the Crimson Tide to three Women’s College World Series appearances including a semifinal finish in 2011 - SEC regular season titles in 2010 and 2011, and the SEC tournament crown in 2010. Named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011, she was a four-time NCAA Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American as well as a four-time Easton first team All-American. A four-time All-SEC pitcher, Dunne was the 2008 SEC Freshman of the Year and was the MVP of the 2010 SEC tournament. She was a USA Softball top-10 finalist for Player of the Year in 2009 and 2011, and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 National Pro Fastpitch League by the NPF Diamonds. Dunne closed out her career with the Crimson Tide as the all-time leader in strikeouts (1,219), strikeouts per seven innings (9.82), complete game no-hitters (9) and shutouts (40). She also finished with 113 career wins, which ranks sixth on the SEC’s all-time list. Dunne also racked up numerous accolades at Spruce Creek High School. She set a Florida High School Athletic Association single-game strikeout record with 38 Ks in 17 innings of work in a playoff game in 2006 and became only the second player in the state to post two 400-strikeout campaigns. Dunne was the 2007 EA Sports National Softball Player of the Year and a two-time EA Sports High School All-America first team selection. Dunne earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Administration from Alabama in 2010 and completed her master’s degree in Sport Management, also at Alabama, in 2012.

Softball Stadium
The first phase of the Embry-Riddle Softball Stadium was completed in 2011. The stadium features dimensions of 197 feet down the lines and 218 feet to straightaway center. The outfield is made up of Tifway 419 bermuda grass and the Daktronics scoreboard is prominently displayed beyond the outfield wall. In 2014, the facility was upgraded to include seating for 415 spectators, as well as offices for the coaching staff, team locker rooms, a training room and concession area. In the summer of 2015, Embry-Riddle celebrated the opening of the brand new ERAU Baseball/Softball Clubhouse along with the completion of the renovations at the ERAU Softball Stadium. Located between Sliwa Stadium and the ERAU Softball Stadium, the clubhouse primarily serves to support both the baseball and softball programs, with additional amenities for Sports Medicine as well as the athletics department as a whole. The 12,000-square foot facility includes offices for the baseball and softball coaching staffs along with locker rooms for both teams, as well as two officials’ locker rooms. In addition to the offices and locker rooms, the facility includes an athletic training room, a multipurpose conference room, laundry room and public restrooms.

Stadium
Built in 2001, the home of Embry-Riddle baseball has dimensions of 330 feet down each line and 400 feet to straight-away center. In the spring of 2006, a gated brick entrance was added along with a covered grandstand with seating for 615 spectators and a press box.

SLIWA SCHOLARSHIP
The Kenneth J. and Shirley Sliwa Memorial Endowed fund was established in 1997 by Shirley Sliwa, mother of fomer President of ERAU, Dr. Steve Sliwa, and widow of Ken Sliwa. When Shirley passed away, Dr. Sliwa added his mother to the name of the fund. In 1994, Ken and Shirley began their friendship with the Eagles baseball program, becoming two of the program’s most dedicated fans. Their passion for the sport and the young men that played for Embry-Riddle was undeniable. The discretionary funds are used for baseball scholarships, maintenance and improvements to Sliwa Stadium, equipment, recruiting, capital expenditures and overall enhancement of the baseball program. The annual Sliwa Scholarship is given to the Eagle baseball player who leads his team through his example of academic commitment, tenacity, work ethic, enthusiasm, selflessness and hustle. Gifts and pledges of all sizes are gratefully appreciated to help build the fund. If interested, please contact John Mark Adkison in the Athletic Department at (386) 323-5033 or email john.adkison@erau.edu.

PHILLIPS
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS John Phillips was named Embry-Riddle’s Director of Athletics in January 2014 after serving as the Eagles’ Associate Athletics Director for seven years. Born and raised in Kensington, Maryland, Phillips came to Daytona Beach in 1989, enrolling as a student at Embry-Riddle. Phillips played baseball for the Eagles for three seasons, while completing both his undergraduate (B.S., 1990) and graduate degrees (M.S., 1992). Phillips returned to the University as the program’s first-ever Director of Sports Marketing and Promotions in August 1997, and was subsequently named Assistant Director of Athletics in 1998. In 2007, he was named Associate Director of Athletics, supervising the day-to-day operations of the athletic department, including facilities, game management, sports information, sports medicine and sports marketing for the Daytona Beach campus. During his tenure at Embry-Riddle, Phillips has served as the tournament director for all nine NAIA national championships that Embry-Riddle has hosted, including five for golf and four national soccer tournaments. In 2008, the NAIA honored him with the Charles Morris Award as the NAIA’s National Athletic Administrator of the Year. In addition, he was honored by The Sun Conference as the league’s Athletic Director of the Year in 2014-15. In 2010, Phillips was named to the Board of Directors for the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA), becoming just the second administrator from an NAIA institution to be named to this board. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors for NACMA, he is also a past chair of the NAIA-NACMA Advisory Board, a panel of NAIA administrators that provided leadership and professional development opportunities in sports marketing to other NAIA institutions. Internally, Phillips has served the University in numerous other capacities during his 19-years on staff, including Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Reaccreditation Audit Team, ERAU’s Women’s Initiative Committee, ERAU’s Diversity and Inclusion Task Force and the Embry-Riddle Alumni Advisory Council.
Locally, Phillips currently serves as the Chair of the Daytona Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Sports Advisory Committee. This committee is charged with providing guidance and marketing expertise in attracting regional, national and international sporting events to the Daytona Beach community. In 2015, he was nominated to serve on the Halifax Area Advertising Authority (HAAA) Board of Directors. HAAA is charged with promoting tourism offerings within the greater Daytona Beach area, from Ponce Inlet to Ormond By The Sea. During his tenure at Embry-Riddle, the sports marketing and promotions staff has earned 24 NACMA “Best of” awards, including gold medals for things such as “sponsorship activation,” “best student promotion” and “best targeted group promotion.” He has been a featured speaker on topics related to sports marketing at the NAIA convention on seven different occasions, at the CoSIDA Convention in 2011 and 2012, and at the NACMA Convention on eight separate occasions since 2008. He has presented on topics such as “Big Time Promotions on a Small-Time Budget,” Social Networking and the “Brand of You.” The sports information staff at Embry-Riddle has also garnered national attention during his tenure, capturing over 60 CoSIDA awards for Excellence in Publications. ERAU Sports Information was also honored on seven occasions with the NAIA’s Gary Spitler Award for the best overall sports publications in the NAIA. Phillips has also served as the voice of Embry-Riddle basketball for the last 19 seasons and has also done broadcast work for the Eagles baseball team since 1999. In addition to his broadcast work for ERAU, he has worked as the public address announcer for both the Daytona Cubs and DeLand High School football. In his current role with WNDB (1150-AM & 93.5-FM), he anchors WNDB’s motorsports coverage for events such as the Rolex 24, the Daytona 500 and the Coke Zero 400. He has also served as the play-by-play announcer for high school football and basketball, working for WSBB (New Smyrna Beach), WNDA (DeLand) and WELE (Ormond Beach). EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR STUDENT-ATHLETE SUPPORT SERVICES/SWA The Embry-Riddle Athletics Administration announced the appointment of Sonja Taylor to the position of Executive Director of Student-Athlete Support Services in January 2014. Taylor, a 30-year veteran of the University, was also designated the Senior Woman Administrator. In her role with Athletics, Taylor is a member of the senior leadership team, focusing primarily on support services and programs for student-athletes, including academic excellence, personal and career development and overall well-being. She also provides sport supervision for several of ERAU’s female athletics teams and coaches. Before joining the Athletics Department, Taylor served in a variety of roles within the University’s Division of Student Affairs. During her tenure as the Director of Housing, she provided administrative leadership in the planning and construction of the Student Village in 1997, which increased the number of on-campus residents from 900 to 1,900. As a leader on Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus, Taylor has served as the Chair for a number of committees, including Diversity and Inclusion, University Tobacco-Free Communication & Transition, the Embry-Riddle Annual Fund and Judicial Process Review, which resulted in the creation of the University’s Honor Code and Honor Board. Taylor has also served as Off-Site Committee Member for the Commission on Colleges’ Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and has been a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the Association of Student Conduct Administrators. Taylor has been an avid supporter of sports in general and the Eagles’ Athletics program in particular. She has attended numerous games as a season ticket holder and her interaction with the Eagle coaches and student-athletes has resulted in her being asked to be an honorary coach at home contests, in addition to being a guest speaker at the 2012 ERAU Student-Athlete Convocation.
