EAGLE MEN SEASON PREVIEW 2012 marks Head Coach Mike Rosolino’s 11th season at the helm of the Embry-Riddle Men’s Cross Country program, Rosolino has brought the Eagles into the national spotlight over the past decade, participating in seven straight NAIA National Championships. Rosolino and his team expect to duplicate that feat this year. “I think that we are really close to jumping into the upper echelon of NAIA teams,” Rosolino said. “What we need is a completely healthy season from everyone and I think we can finish in the top 10-to-15 squads. Injuries played a big part in last year’s national meet, so if we can stay healthy then we can definitely return to the 2009-type finish at nationals.” The Eagles finished a program-best fifth in 2009 and last season turned in a 28th-place finish at the NAIA National Championships. Embry-Riddle claimed its seventh consecutive Sun Conference title in 2011, racing past a SCAD Savannah team that had beaten them just a few weeks earlier in the season. “The conference meet was definitely the highlight of the season for the men,” Rosolino pointed out. “The way they pulled together and made things happen, that was impressive.” The Blue and Gold finished third or higher in four meets in 2011, including a pair of first-place finishes at the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic (Oct. 8) and The Sun Conference Championships (Nov. 5). Evans Kirwa recorded five of the 20 fastest times in program history, but even more impressively, won all but two of ERAU’s meets last year. “We had a great group of young men that were committed to the team and that showed throughout the season,” said Rosolino. “With some injuries, it wasn’t our best season ever, but how we finished the year was a testament to both their character and team chemistry.”

KIRWA

2

Kirwa became the first Eagle to be named a cross country All-American twice, repeating his 2009 honor with a sixth-place finish at the NAIA National Championships. The Eldoret, Kenya native has 11 of the 20 fastest times in Eagle history and could become the first four-time winner of The Sun Conference Runner of the Year with a win at The Sun Conference Championships. “Evans has been a difference maker for us since he stepped on campus,” Rosolino stated. “He’s the best cross country runner to ever compete for EmbryRiddle, not only as an athlete, but as a person too. He’s helped push everybody else and he makes his teammates better because he is out there.” Kirwa, who is already Embry-Riddle’s most decorated NAIA All-American with eight track & field accolades to go along with two in cross country, will once again be looked upon to lead the Eagles on the course. “Our expectation for Evans is for him to have another great season,” stated Rosolino. “Ideally we’d like to see him return to the top group in the NAIA and he has a shot to claim a national title. It will be exciting to see what he does in his last season here.” High expectations don’t stop with Kirwa as the Eagles boast four returners who have made significant impacts during their ERAU careers. “I look at the core of last year’s conference championship team and you’ve got Josh Guerrero, Zach Kraus, Alec Hernandez and Jacob Dordick to complement Evans,” Rosolino mentioned. “I really think those four will be close to each other throughout the season, pushing each other to build on last year’s success.” Kraus earned first team All-Conference honors a year ago, while both Guerrero and Dordick collected second team All-Sun Conference awards. Kraus and Guerrero are the 10th and 11th fastest runners, respectively in Eagle history, finishing amongst the top six Eagle runners in every race they ran in 2011. Hernandez put together a nice freshman season for Rosolino and the Eagles, but an injury hampered him during his rookie year. Dordick, a walk-on for ERAU in 2011, came through in a big way over the final two races of the season, finishing ninth overall at The Sun Conference Championships, securing the Eagles’ seventh title before becoming the third Blue and Gold finisher at the NAIA National Championships. Other returners for the Eagles include Patrick Clare, Bruce Federico, Joe Fuller, Mallory Jackson, Dalton L’Heureux, Paul Meesala and Jason Riggs, all of whom look to improve in 2012. “Our returners have the potential to take a big step forward this season,” said Rosolino. “Combined with our group of newcomers, I’m excited to see where this group can go.” Also vying for a place in the top five for EmbryRiddle will be newcomer Vincent Bett, a sophomore transfer from Middle Tennessee State. “We expect big things from Vincent,” Rosolino pointed out. “We think he can step right in and become our number two or three runner.” Bett, a native of Moi’s Bridge, Kenya, competed in five meets for the Blue Raiders on the cross country course last season. Along with Bett, the Eagles boast six newcomers: Makynzee Balucas, Connor Isnard, Ryan Larson,

Guerrero

Palmer Lintz and Jamin Mays. If the Eagles are to win their eighth straight Sun Conference crown, Rosolino said his team needs to be prepared for another tough race. “It’s going to take an effort like we had last year to win the conference meet in 2012,” Rosolino maintained. “We’re going to have to work for it and make sure we’re prepared. Our top five is as strong as anyone in the conference, but nothing is easy, we have to run a solid race.” The Sun Conference Championships lead up to the Blue and Gold’s ultimate destination: the NAIA National Championships. “This is the fourth year in a row the national meet will be held in Fort Vancouver,” Rosolino stated. “I think that if we stay healthy as a team, we can make some noise in Washington.” The Eagles’ 2012 race schedule is once again one of the toughest slates an NAIA school will face. Three NCAA I meets dot the schedule, including the USF Invitational (Sept. 7), the Mountain Dew Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida (Sept. 15) and the Seminole Invitational (Oct. 5) at Florida State. “Our goal is to go out and race the best competition we can every week,” said Rosolino. “It’s to see how fast we can really run. We try to challenge ourselves so that every race we’re being pushed to our limits.” Over the past several seasons, the Eagles have had no problem with their hefty schedule, outpacing all but two NCAA I teams in the state of Florida in that span. The Eagles kick off their season on Sept. 7 with a trip to Tampa, Fla. for the USF Invitational before participating in the Mountain Dew Invitational. ERAU will return home to host the annual Asics Embry-Riddle Classic (Sept. 22), and then they will run in the Seminole Invitational before wrapping up the 2012 regular season at the South Carolina Beaufort-hosted Sand Shark Invite (Oct. 20). The Sun Conference Championships will be hosted by Webber International in Babson Park, Fla. on Nov. 3, two weeks before the NAIA National Championships on Nov. 17 in Fort Vancouver, Wash.

Returning for their senior seasons, Bonk and Hyatt will join sophomore Ross as well as Coelho and Staker to make up the core of the ERAU squad. “Aleiyah, Baleigh, Nicole and Bailey Eaton should all be right on the heels of Karina and Ellie,” Rosolino maintains. “I think we can have a pack of 6-10 women that could be within a minute of each other and that would be an exciting group.” Last season, the Eagles had six freshmen on the roster, a formula that led to some ill-timed injuries. However, the Blue and Gold is prepared to make it a learning experience, moving forward in both training and expectations. Embry-Riddle’s 24th-place finish at the NAIA National Championships in 2011 was arguably the Eagles’ best-ever race at a national meet and Roso-

As for the rest of the Eagles’ roster, Rosolino hopes his team can continue to build on their solid foundation for a special 2012 season and avoid the injuries that plagued them during 2011. “They’ve matured as a group, both physically and mentally,” Rosolino said. “Some of the injury things should go away. lino thinks that 2012 could be the next big step in the evolution of the program. “I think last year’s national meet was our best national race in program history,” Rosolino said. “It may not have reflected that in the final results, but when you look at the times and effort that we put in, we really should have been a top-15 team. The potential is there to move up at the national meet, but there are things we need to do as far as training goes. We need to get five women under 19 minutes and I know we have the athletes that are capable of that this season.” Five regular season meets, highlighted by the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic on Sept. 22, will provide a strong test for the Eagles for the postseason. “The Asics Embry-Riddle Classic is an exciting event for us to run in which both high schools and colleges compete,” stated Rosolino. “Now that all the construction is done on our athletic fields, we have what we believe will be a permanent course. I think it will be the fastest and best course we’ve ever had here.”

The Embry-Riddle women’s cross country team stretched its Sun Conference winning streak to six straight titles in 2011 before placing 24th at the NAIA National Championships, the third-highest finish in program history. “I really believe the women had an all-around fantastic season,” said Rosolino. “They ran in a tight pack all year long despite being so young. We dealt with a lot of injuries, but in general I was very pleased with how we finished the season.” The Eagles return nearly an intact roster from last year, including first team All-Sun Conference performers Karina Coelho, Baleigh Hyatt and Ellie Staker, and second team All-Conference roster members Nicole Bonk and Aleiyah Ross. Coelho and Staker were the top two finishers for the Eagles all year long and Rosolino expects big things out of the pair. “I really would like to see Ellie or Karina step up and become our first All-American on the women’s side,” Rosolino stated. “I believe they possess that potential. They’re both stronger now than last year, and they proved that during track last season, becoming AllAmericans both individually and in relays. The expectations are higher for them, but they make a great 1-2 punch up top.”

HEAD COACH

Mike Rosolino 11th Season Rhodes - 1996 Over the last ten cross country seasons, Mike Rosolino’s harriers have dominated Sun Conference competition. The men’s team has seven league titles to its credit, while women’s team has topped the conference standings in each of the last six seasons. The Eagles’ run began in 2005 when the Embry-Riddle men captured the program’s first league and NAIA Regional titles and made their first team appearance at the NAIA National Championship. A year later, Rosolino’s harriers repeated that performance and were joined by the ERAU women who claimed their first regional and conference crowns. Rosolino has been named The Sun Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year 13 times in his EmbryRiddle career - seven times for the men and six on the women’s side – and the NAIA Region XIV Coach four times. He picked up his latest league coaching accolades in 2011 after leading both teams to yet another conference championship. The men took fifth place overall at the NAIA National Championship in 2009, with three runners earning All-America honors for the first time in program history, while the women finished 16th that same season. Rosolino coached Evans Kirwa to his second All-America honor in 2011, the first Eagle runner to accomplish the feat in program history. In 2005, Rosolino was tasked with launching a track and field program at Embry-Riddle. His penchant for success is evident in track and field as well as he has led the men to six conference championships and the women to four league titles in the last eight seasons. Rosolino has coached numerous conference champions, 103 All-Americans and five National Champions who have won nine individual national championships: Beth McCubbin (1000m; 2008, 2009), Crystal Bardge (100m hurdles; 2011, 2012; 60m hurdles, 2011), Sam Vaquez (1000m; 2011), Nicole Bonk (3000m Race Walk; 2012; 5000m Race Walk; 2012), Reta Woodard (Weight Throw; 2012). Along with training top athletes, Rosolino sets the highest standards for his athletes in the classroom. In the past ten seasons, he has coached 54 NAIA All-America Scholar Athletes, including five during the 2011-12 season. His teams have also consistently earned NAIA Scholar Team recognition. Rosolino came to Embry-Riddle from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., where he spent two years on the coaching staff for the Blue Hose. He began his stint at Presbyterian as an assistant coach and was elevated to the head job after just six months. Despite the brevity of his tenure with the program, Rosolino guided the Blue Hose to their best finishes in school history, producing two South Atlantic Conference Runners of the Year and a Freshman of the Year in the process. Prior to earning his position within the Presbyterian athletic department, Rosolino spent four academic years (1997-01) as the Director of Residence Life in Clinton. He also served as Resident Director for one year (1996-97) while attending graduate school.

Rosolino also ran two seasons for the Rhodes track team, competing in the middle to long distance races. In 1995, he finished fifth at the SCAC Championships in the steeplechase. An Academic All-American for Rhodes in 1994 and 1995, Rosolino was a National Merit finalist and earned distinction as a National Science Scholar. The Sun Conference, formerly the Florida Sun Conference, is heading into its 22nd season of competition and continues to be one of the most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Under the guidance of Commissioner Mark Pope (2011-present), the league sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and women’s volleyball. Sun Conference teams are perennial contenders for national titles. In 2011-12, 31 teams made national tournament appearances. The Northwood men’s basketball team, the SCAD Savannah women’s golf team and Embry-Riddle’s women’s tennis team each finished as runnerup in their respective national tournaments. Additionally, the league racked up numerous individual national titles as Embry-Riddle’s Chris Freeman and Patrick Besch and Adrian Bayh won the ITA/NAIA National singles and doubles titles respectively, while the Eagles’ Reta Woodard, Nicole Bonk and Crystal Bardge won national titles in track and field.

Individually speaking, student-athletes from The Sun Conference have proven themselves worthy of national recognition year after year. In 2010-11 alone, 68 student-athletes from the league were named NAIA All-Americans, while 96 TSC athletes were also named DaktronicsNAIA Scholar Athletes. The roots of The Sun Conference date back to 1990 when the league was originally formed as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Original membership consisted of Embry-Riddle, Flagler, Florida Memorial, Nova (now Nova Southeastern), Palm Beach Atlantic, St. Thomas, Webber International and Warner Southern. The name “Florida Sun Conference” was adopted in 1992. The league grew to nine members with the addition of Northwood in 1994. Between 2002 and 2006, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic and Flagler moved to NCAA II, but the league was able to recruit new members as Savannah College of Art and Design joined in 2004 followed by Edward Waters in 2006. With the addition of the University of South Carolina at Beaufort, Johnson & Wales, Southeastern, Ave Maria and Thomas (Ga.), along with Edward Waters’ move to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, the league membership now stands at 12 schools.

2011 Men’s Year in review Eagles Win Seventh Straight Sun Conference Title The Embry-Riddle Eagles entered the 2011 Sun Conference Championship with a big question mark. Just two weeks earlier, the SCAD Savannah Bees finished several places higher than the Eagles at the Southeast Classic. However, the Blue and Gold got big performances from Evans Kirwa, Alex Frazier, Joshua Guerrero, Zach Kraus and Jacob Dordick to upset the Bees in Ave Maria, Fla. for the progam’s seventh conescutive conference crown. Kirwa, Frazier and Kraus were all first team All-Conference performers with Kirwa claiming Sun Conference Runner of the Year honors for the third straight season. Guerrero and Dordick claimed second team honors as ERAU finished three points ahead of SCAD. The Eagles lead the all-time championship race with seven titles, while Warner has won four, Webber International has three and St. Thomas and Nova Southeastern each have captured one crown.

Blue and Gold Finishes 28th at NAIA National Championships

Kirwa Wins Six Meets in 2011 The 2011 season marked the single greatest individual season in Eagle history, put together by junior Evans Kirwa. Kirwa won six of the eight meets during the year, including meet titles at two NCAA I meets (USF Invitational and UCF Black & Gold Challenge), the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic and The Sun Conference Championships. Kirwa posted five times in 2011 that are amongst the 20 fastest marks in program history, the fastest of the year coming at the UCF Black & Gold Challenge (Oct. 14).

Rosolino Named Sun Conference Coach of the Year for Seventh Time The Sun Conference Coach of the Year award has found consistency on Embry-Riddle Head Coach Mike Rosolino’s mantle. Rosolino won his seventh straight Coach of the Year honor in 2011 after his Eagles claimed the conference title for the seventh consecutive season.

Embry-Riddle Harriers Rack Up Honors

The Eagles ended their 2011 season in Fort Vancouver, Wash. for the third straight season, placing 28th at the NAIA National Championships. Kirwa led the way for the Blue and Gold, becoming the first Eagle cross country runner to earn All-America honors twice. The Eldoret, Kenya native finished sixth in the race, followed by senior Alex Frazier who placed 121st in the race. Dordick, the Eagle most responsible for sending ERAU to the National Championships because of his personal-best time at the conference meet, shattered his two-week old time with a 26:48 mark at the NAIA meet. Dordick’s time put him 151st of the 312 total runners at the event. Rounding out the Eagles scorers were Guerrero (27:23) and Alex Hernandez (27:32).

The Eagles had a succesful 2011 season, both on the course and in the classroom, collecting numerous accolades for their achievements. In addition to earning All-America honors, Kirwa was The Sun Conference Runner of the Year and a first team All-Conference performer. Kirwa also became just the second cross country runner in NAIA history to be named the national runner of the week three times in one season. Joining Kirwa on the first team were Alex Frazier and Zach Kraus, while both Guerrero and Dordick earned second team honors. Kraus was awarded CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America second team honors for his 3.85 GPA in Aerospace Engineering.

Eagles Claim Asics Classic Crown Embry-Riddle captured its first team title of the 2011 season by winning the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic on Oct. 8. Running in extremely soggy conditions on the course on Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus, the Eagles turned in a combined time of 2:21:00.40 and placed seven runners in the top 10 to finish with 17 total points. For the fourth straight race, Evans Kirwa was the Eagles top runner in the 8K as he claimed his third individual title of the season after crossing the line in 26:14.90. Kirwa finished more than minute ahead of teammate Alex Frazier who was second overall in 27:47.86. Zachary Kraus (28:32.19) and Josh Guerrero (28:55.73) were third and fourth, respectively, and Jacob Dordick (7th, 29:29.72), Patrick Clare (9th, 29:55.80) and Jason Riggs (10th, 30:07.47) rounded out the Eagles top seven finishers.

2011 woMen’s Year in review Sun Conference Crown Returns to Daytona Beach

Embry-Riddle Five-Peats as Asics Classic Champion

There was a lack of drama at The Sun Conference Championships in 2011. The Eagles placed six runners in the top 10 and three in the top five to claim their sixth consecutive Sun Conference crown. Embry-Riddle totalled 26 points to easily win the title, beating out second-place finisher SCAD Savannah who tallied 38 team points. Karina Coelho was the top Eagle finisher, placing second overall, followed by senior Julie Mayfield in third and sophomore Ellie Staker in fifth. Those three were joined by Baleigh Hyatt on the first team All-Conference roster, while Nicole Bonk and Aleiyah Ross were represented on the second team. The Eagles’ win gave them six crowns, the most Sun Conference women’s cross country titles of any other school, surpassing Flagler’s five.

The team champion of the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic has become synymous with the host team. The Eagles claimed their fifth straight Asics Classic team title with a season-low 20 points. Staker established herself as the Eagles’ top runner for the fourth race in a row, completing the 5K course in 20:00.08 for a second place overall finish. Staker was followed by Coelho who ran a 20:04.25 to take third. The next three Eagle harriers finished within 11 seconds of each other as Mayfield placed fourth in 20:31.89, Ross placed fifth in 20:42.30 and Bailey Eaton placed sixth in 20:42.71. Bonk was eighth in 21:17.32 and Hyatt closed out Eagles’ top seven finishers, placing 10th with a time of 21:22.33.

Staker and Coelho Pace Blue and Gold

Eagles Place 24th at NAIA National Championships The Eagles put forth one of their best national meets in program history in Fort Vancouver, Wash. on Nov. 19, finishing 24th, the third-highest mark in team history. Coelho paced the Blue and Gold harriers, running a 19:22 mark to 64th overall. Following Coelho was sophomore Staker with a time of 19:47, good for 97th place. Coelho’s 19:22 was her second-fastest of the season. Coming in third and fourth on the Eagles’ squad were Mayfield (19:51) and Bonk (19:57), while freshman Ross (20:05) rounded out the Eagle scorers. Mayfield placed 114th, Bonk was 128th and Ross finished in 135th place. Baleigh Hyatt (20:07) and Bailey Eaton (21:17) were the other Eagles who participated in the 323-runner event.

At the top of the Embry-Riddle finish list for every race during 2011 was one of two names: Karina Coelho or Ellie Staker. The duo finished first or second on the squad in all but one race with Staker claiming top honors at the first six meets and Coelho recording the top time during the final two races. Staker’s season-best finish came at the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic on Oct. 8 when she placed second overall. The Seattle, Wash. native also finished in the top ten in three other races. Coelho recorded a second-place finish at The Sun Conference Championships and a third-place time at the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic with her best time of the year coming at the Southeast Classic on Oct. 22 when she ran the course in 18:54.19.

Coach of the Year Honors Go to Rosolino Embry-Riddle Head Coach Mike Rosolino took home his sixth Sun Conference women’s cross country Coach of the Year award at The Sun Conference Championships on Nov. 5. Rosolino’s squad captured the team title in impressive fashion, earning him the yearly accolade.

Accolades Abound for Eagle Runners The Eagles had one of the most succesful seasons in program history during the 2011 slate. ERAU garnered four first team All-Conference honors (Coelho, Hyatt, Mayfield and Staker), two second team All-Conference awards (Bonk and Ross), a NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete accolade (Mayfield) and three CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America honors (Mayfield - first team, Coelho and Staker - third team).

DAYTONA BEACH

DAYTONA BEACH - HOME OF THE EAGLES Daytona Beach is an ever-changing city of more than 61,000 residents. Located on the “Fun Coast” of Florida, the principal city of Volusia County, it has become one of the premier destination spots in the Southeast Region. Despite its continuous growth, it has maintained the spirit and serenity of a small, close-knit beach community. The city is a year-round family-friendly resort area, which hosts large groups of out-of-towners that descend upon the city for various events, most notably Speedweeks in early February, Bike Week in early March, Biketoberfest in October and Spring Break throughout March. Home to four colleges and universities, Daytona Beach boasts an excellent quality of life and is a city that thrives and celebrates the diversity of its community. Located less than an hour from Orlando and an hour and a half from Jacksonville, Daytona Beach residents have ample opportunity to experience both cities’ entertainment options, including Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, the Orlando Magic and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Daytona Beach continually exhibits its love for sports by hosting numerous local and national athletic events at the Ocean Center and Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

3

Daytona Beach boasts three major sports franchises in NASCAR, the LPGA and the USTA. The Daytona International Speedway is one of the most recognizable racetracks in the world and features the Daytona 500, Coke Zero 400 and numerous other auto racing events. The LPGA and USTA Florida both claim Daytona Beach as their organizational headquarters.

6

The beaches of Daytona rank sixth for beach destinations in the United States. Every year, millions of vacationers flock to the Atlantic Ocean and Daytona Beach to experience the sandy beaches in Volusia County. The hard packed sand allows motorized vehicles to drive right onto the beach.

55

Daytona Beach is located a short, 55-mile drive away from the Vacation Capital of the World: Orlando, Florida. Orlando is home to Walt Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios, as well as the NBA’s Orlando Magic. Daytona Beach is also just 91 miles from Jacksonville, the 11th-largest city in the United States.

70.4º 200

The average yearly temperature in Daytona Beach is 70.4º F (21.3º C), making for a warm and pleasant climate in which to live. Winters are mild and summers are warm thanks to its location on the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River, an estuary which flows between the beachside and the mainland.

Daytona Beach boasts more than 200 restaurants, including barbecue, Mexican, Oriental, Greek, Indian, Italian, Thai, seafood, Cuban, health and natural foods.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is the world’s oldest, largest and most prestigious university specializing in aviation and aerospace. The curriculum covers the operation, engineering and research of modern aircraft, alternative vehicles and clean energy systems and the management of aviation and aerospace organizations. Approximately 34,000 students pursue degrees from among 40 degree programs at residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., and at more than 150 education centers for working professionals in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. Embry-Riddle also offers online coursework. Embry-Riddle’s worldwide reputation for academic excellence draws students from all 50 states and nearly 90 nations. The 185-acre Daytona Beach campus, located next to Daytona Beach International Airport, has 4,600 undergraduate and 610 graduate students. Excellent flying weather and the resort communities surrounding the Daytona Beach campus offer students an outstanding environment in which to study, fly and enjoy numerous recreational and cultural activities. The campus is within an hour’s drive of the Kennedy Space Center and the Space Coast and within easy reach of Orlando and Jacksonville, which offer a menu of arts, culture, theme parks, shopping and professional sports.

History

On Dec. 17, 1925, 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Embry-Riddle Company at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education. After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again in Miami, Fla., as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane maintenance. In the following decades, Embry-Riddle expanded its international outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight training, ground school and technical training programs into one location. With dollars and trucks borrowed from civic leaders, the move to Daytona Beach signaled

42

the rebirth of Embry-Riddle as an accredited university and the start of its odyssey to world-class status.

Academics

Embry-Riddle is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award degrees at the associate, bachelor and master levels. At many public universities, freshmen and sophomores are taught by graduate assistants, but not so at Embry-Riddle. Classes, which average 25 students, are taught by faculty who are accessible to students in class, during office hours and through universitywide voice mail and e-mail.

Housing

Embry-Riddle’s on-campus housing is an integral part of the university experience. It gives students the opportunity to develop lifelong friendships and to appreciate the unique values that everyone brings to this diverse institution.

It is currently sponsored by their daughter and Spruce Creek Flyin resident, Cherie Keemar, and was initiated by her late husband, Michael. The BEST offers tutoring and mentoring programs to assist student-athletes in managing their time between academics, athletics and social development. One of the fundamental components of the BEST Program is Study Hall, which is for student-athletes who are required to attend according to stipulations set by each respective team’s coaching staff. Study Hall is a place where tutors and mentors are available for student-athletes throughout the academic year. With its clearly defined criteria and rules of conduct, Study Hall strives to provide a structured environment

that will benefit student-athletes by improving study habits, honing focus and providing one-on-one learning opportunities. It is not intended to be a substitute for regular class attendance and routine study, but is designed as an essential tool to help student-athletes achieve their academic objectives. Dave Therneau serves as the Academic Enhancement Coordinator of the BEST Program. He and other BEST Program staff members oversee the daily operations of the Academic Advancement Center where all students, including athletes, can go and receive tutoring in many of the courses and subjects that are part of the curriculum at Embry-Riddle. Embry-Riddle is in the process of constructing a new College of Arts & Sciences building. In it will house a 9,000 square foot facility dedicated to the University’s Academic Achievement Center, which includes the BEST Program.

National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Throughout its history, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. With its major emphasis on education and character development, it was natural for the NAIA to further strengthen academic eligibility requirements in the 1980s. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a 2.0 grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a term-by-term basis. Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the overall educational experience. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport.

NAIA Quick Facts

• 60,000 student-athletes • 13 sports • 23 national championships • 300 colleges and universities • $450 million in athletic scholarships

champions of character respect • Responsibility • Integrity • Sportsmanship • servant Leadership Embry-Riddle Champions of Character Quick Facts • John Mark Adkison, ERAU’s Champions of Character Liaison • 1570+ hours of community service by ERAU student-athletes in 2011-12 • ERAU named a 2011-12 NAIA Champions of Character Five Star Institution The Champions of Character initiative was established by the NAIA to help promote the “right thing” by those affiliated with sports both inside and outside the sports setting. In so doing, the organization looks to develop exemplary character and sportsmanship in NAIA competition. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship. This program educates and create awareness of the positive character-building traits afforded by sports and returns integrity to competition at the collegiate and youth levels while impacting all of society. Under the guidance of Assistant Athletic Director John Mark Adkison, who serves as ERAU’s Champions of Character liaison, the Embry-Riddle Athletic Department has enthusiastically embraced the implementation of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative. For years the department has sought to instill in student-athletes the very values addressed by the movement. Embry-Riddle’s intercollegiate teams participate in Champions of Character events throughout the school year, including: • Elementary school reading programs • Habitat for Humanity • Food Brings Hope • Beach clean-up • Children’s Home Society Christmas Drive • Embry-Riddle Housing move-in • Serving Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless In addition to these events, the department instituted a Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) that assists in the planning of Champions of Character events within the community.
