Season Outlook

MARTIN

ERAU Athletics Begins New Chapter With Inaugural Season Of Women’s Basketball The 2014-15 season marks the inaugural campaign for the Embry-Riddle women’s basketball team and Head Coach Lisa Nuxol-Wilson is focused on developing the foundation of a successful program this season. This will be ERAU’s one and only season of competition in The Sun Conference before spending two years transitioning into NCAA Division II and the Sunshine State Conference, which presents a very unique situation for Nuxol-Wilson and the Eagles. “We are more focused on our process this year,” Nuxol-Wilson said. “It’s not often that you have an opportunity to lay the groundwork for a program, and that’s something that we’re very excited about. I think if we can commit to the process we can be very competitive. Our big-picture focus is on getting this program prepared for the future, but at the same time, we want to make the most of our one shot at competing in The Sun Conference.” Nuxol-Wilson has brought in 12 players to make up the 2014-15 roster, including five guards, three swing players, two forwards and a center. With all 12 players list at 5-7 and taller, Nuxol-Wilson is excited about the height that the Eagles have and how that size can translate to transition offense and solid team defense. “We want to be a strong defensive team that runs the floor well in transition,” Nuxol-Wilson stated. “It’s important for us to take care of the basketball on offense and communicate well on defense. I think our overall size and the depth of our bench will be two of the biggest strengths we have this season.”

The Eagles have five guards on the roster with one primary point guard, two combo guards and two shooting guards. Ashley McWilliams, a 5-8 freshman, is expected to be the team’s point guard. McWilliams averaged 13.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.8 steals per game as a senior at Academy of the Holy Names in Tampa. “Ashley has a phenomenal work ethic and is a great leader for us on the court,” Nuxol-Wilson noted. “She is a very steady player with a high basketball IQ who has good size for a point guard and is very smart defensively.” Sabrina Whiting and Kalah Martin are both combo guards who can play either point or shooting guard for the Eagles. Whiting, a 5-7 freshman, averaged 16.0 points, 3.7 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 4.6 steals per contest last year at Seffner Christian Academy. Martin, a 5-8 junior transfer from St. Louis Community College, averaged 14.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game last year for the Archers. “Sabrina and Kalah both have experience playing point guard in the past, but I expect them to each see a lot of time at the two-guard spot,” Nuxol-Wilson remarked. “They are both very quick and athletic, strong defensively and good shooters.”

Two other guards on the roster are Ashlé Muse and Helga Fridriksdottir. Muse, a 5-9 freshman, averaged 18.9 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 3.9 steals per game last year at University Christian School in Jacksonville. Fridriksdottir, a 5-11 freshman, averaged 9.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game at Commercial College in Iceland in 2013.

GUARD/FORWARD Hannah Carine Alicia Jackson Mercedes Jorge

5-10 Fr. Windermere, Fla. 5-9 Sr. Sarasota, Fla. 5-9 So. Lake Mary, Fla.

Hannah Carine and Mercedes Jorge are both swing players who can play guard or in the post, giving Nuxol-Wilson some versatility in the lineup. A 5-10 freshman, Carine averaged 18.4 points, 8.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game as a senior at International Community School in Windermere. Jorge, a 5-9 sophomore, averaged 7.0 points and 8.0 boards in 15 minutes per game at Indian River State College last year. “Hannah is very steady and has a positive personality that is very contagious on and off the court,” Nuxol-Wilson said. “Although she’s a freshman, she has already shown that she has great leadership abilities.” “Mercedes is one of the most versatile players I’ve ever coached,” Nuxol-Wilson stated. “She has the ability to guard all five positions and play anywhere on the floor for us on offense, and she’s willing to do whatever is needed to help the team.” Another option as both a guard and a forward is Alicia Jackson. Jackson is the team’s lone senior who recently finished her Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautics.

FORWARDS Allison Abbott Tara Fields

6-0 Fr. St. Augustine, Fla. 6-0 Fr. Winter Park, Fla.

Allison Abbott and Tara Fields will be the primary forwards for ERAU this season. Abbott, a 6-0 freshman, played at St. Augustine High School where she averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds, five steals, three blocks and two assists per game a year ago. Also a 6-0 freshman, Fields was a three-year letter winner at Lake Howell High School where she averaged 10 points, 12.5 rebounds and three blocks per game as a senior. “Allison is a good face-up post player who can knock down mid-range jump shots,” Nuxol-Wilson noted. “Tara is a great rebounder who actually broke the single-game rebounding record at Lake Howell. She’s very quick and runs the floor well in our transition offense.”

CENTER Taylor Cyphers

6-3 Jr. Wichita, Kan.

Taylor Cyphers, a 6-3 junior transfer from Texas-Pan American, will be the Eagles’ center. At UTPA, Cyphers appeared in 15 games, averaging 6.4 minutes per contest. In high school, Cyphers led Wichita

Heights to back-to-back state championships and a 50-0 record in her final two seasons. “Taylor brings a lot of experience, having spent two years playing at a Division I school,” Nuxol-Wilson said. “She has a great understanding of how to play down low and is one of our best defenders.”

2014-15 EAGLE BASKETBALL

Season Outlook

She has elected to use her one season of eligibility to play basketball this year while she works towards a Master’s degree in Business Administration. “I’m really excited to have Alicia be a part of this team,” Nuxol-Wilson remarked. “Having a team full of students that are brand new to Embry-Riddle, it’s been great having Alicia here to help them adjust to life as an Embry-Riddle student-athlete. She is also very strong and aggressive and will help us in the paint this year.”

The Sun Conference

The Sun Conference is heading into its 25th season of competition and continues to be one of the most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The institutions in the conference believe in strong educational commitment combined with balanced athletic competition. Originally formed in March 1990 as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (FIAC), The Sun Conference was established as a conference for small independent institutions within the NAIA. The name “Florida Sun Conference” was adopted in 1992. The league unveiled its new name, “The Sun Conference” on August 18, 2008 to be inclusive of member schools from Georgia and South Carolina. Under the guidance of commissioner Mark Pope, the league sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and field and women’s volleyball. The Sun Conference has proven to be one of the top leagues in the NAIA with its teams consistently being recognized among the nation’s best. In 2013-14, the conference placed two teams in the top 25 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Race with Embry-Riddle placing fourth and SCAD Savannah finishing in 24th place. Sun Conference teams are perennial contenders for national titles and 29 teams made national tournament appearances in 2013-14. SCAD finished as the national runner-up in women’s golf, while Embry-Riddle earned runner-up finishes in both men’s and women’s tennis. In addition to the tennis and golf national runner-up finishes, the league racked up numerous individual national titles. SCAD’s Theresa Schmaus won the ITA/NAIA national singles title while Embyr-Riddle’s Kristina Marova and Hui-I Huang won the doubles crown. On the men’s side, ERAU completed the sweep as Deni Zmak took home the national singles title and teamed up with Simon Felix to win the doubles cown. In track and field, Embry-Riddle’s Reta Woodard won both in the indoor weight and outdoor hammer throw national titles. Women’s golf saw SCAD’s Alazne Urizar earn individual medalist honors, while Northwood’s Helen Lynskey was tabbed as the NSCAA/NAIA Women’s Soccer Player of the Year. In 2013-14 alone, 84 student-athletes from the league were named NAIA All-Americans, while 167 TSC athletes were also named Daktronics-NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes. The roots of The Sun Conference date back to 1990 when the league was originally formed as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Original membership consisted of Embry-Riddle, Flagler, Florida Memorial, Nova (now Nova Southeastern), Palm Beach Atlantic, St. Thomas, Webber International and Warner Southern. The league grew to nine members with the addition of Northwood in 1994. Between 2002 and 2006, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic and Flagler moved to NCAA II, but the league was able to recruit new members as Savannah College of Art and Design joined in 2004, followed by Edward Waters in 2006. With the addition of the University of South Carolina at Beaufort, Johnson and Wales, Southeastern, Ave Maria and Thomas (Ga.) within the last four years, along with Edward Waters’ move to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, the league membership now stands at 12 schools. Football begins its first season as a league-sponsored sport in the Fall of 2014 and that sport brings with it two associate members in Edward Waters and Point.

Embry-Riddle is a provisional member of the NCAA II Sunshine State Conference as the athletic department transitions from the NAIA to NCAA II. The Eagles began their membership with the SSC on July 1, 2014 and will be provisional members for three years (2014-17). The Eagles will play full SSC schedules in 2015-16 and 2016-17, but will not be eligible for postseason play. As Embry-Riddle continues to move through the NCAA II candidacy process, the Eagles will become full members of the Sunshine State Conference in the summer of 2017.

2014-15 EAGLE BASKETBALL

Lisa Nuxol-Wilson was selected as the first-ever Embry-Riddle Women’s Head Basketball Coach in August 2013. Nuxol-Wilson came to Embry-Riddle with 17 years of previous experience in women’s basketball coaching, recruiting and program management. Her coaching experience began in 1996 when she was the assistant and junior varsity coach at her alma mater Lake Howell High School. She simultaneously assumed the assistant coaching responsibility at Seminole State College and after a year of dual coaching, she moved exclusively into college coaching, going to Georgia Southern where she was a women’s basketball first assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 1997-01. Her recruiting efforts produced 10 student-athletes who helped the Eagles to two Southern Conference titles and still hold top marks in the GSU record books. Nuxol-Wilson then moved to Stetson as the Lady Hatters’ women’s basketball recruiting coordinator from 2001-02. In just one season at Stetson, she signed seven players, including Joslyn Giles, who was the 2002-03 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year. In 2002, Nuxol-Wilson was given the opportunity to become the head women’s basketball coach at Seminole Community College, now Seminole State College. As the head coach at a Division I junior college program, Nuxol-Wilson led the women’s basketball team to a combined 59-29 record over her three seasons from 2002-05 and under her guidance, the Raiders were co-conference regular season champions, achieved a No. 9 national ranking and were ranked in the Region 8 top 10 each year. After her first head coaching job, Nuxol-Wilson returned to Division I women’s basketball as an assistant coach for the University of Alabama. At Alabama, Nuxol-Wilson assisted the women’s basketball program in recruiting, game preparation, administrative duties, academic monitoring and individualized position coaching, working with both post players and guards during her tenure. She was also the director of the Alabama camp programs. Throughout her coaching career, Nuxol-Wilson mentored and coached 17 All-Academic team members, 16 All-Conference selections, two All-State honorees, a Scholar-Athlete of the Year, an Arthur Ashe Female Athlete of the Year and a Freshman of the Year. Additionally, five of her student-athletes have gone on to play professionally, including Aneika Henry who played for the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA. After three seasons at Alabama, Nuxol-Wilson became a national evaluator with Blue Star Basketball and in in 2010, she started the Blue Star-Florida Basketball program serving as a head coach and program director. With Blue Star, Nuxol-Wilson was tasked with overseeing high school and elite-level women’s basketball, recruiting players, administering program budgets, scheduling tournaments, and managing all public relations. Under her direction, 18 individuals have earned All-State recognition, while 13 have signed NCAA Division I contracts. Through her role at Blue Star, Nuxol-Wilson has developed a broad network of recruiting contacts in the state of Florida. Nuxol-Wilson began her collegiate playing career at West Virginia Tech where she helped the Golden Bears to a conference regular season title and a perfect 18-0 league record in 1990-91. The following season, the Florida native returned to her home state where she was named the Academic Athlete of the Year at Valencia Community College. An NJCAA Academic All-America nominee, she helped the Matadors to the 1992 conference crown. After transferring from Valencia Community College, Nuxol-Wilson transferred to the University of Central Florida where she played for the Knights’ women’s basketball team. She earned her bachelors degree in Political Science from UCF in 1994. Nuxol-Wilson is married to Dr. Matt Wilson who is an Associate Professor in Sport Business at Stetson University. They reside in Deland with their six-yearold son Rocco. The Wilson Family (L-R): Lisa, Rocco, Matt

Located on the “Fun Coast” of Florida, the principal city of Volusia County, it has become one of the premier destination spots in the Southeast Region. Despite its continuous growth, it has maintained the spirit and serenity of a small, close-knit beach community. The city is a year-round family-friendly resort area, which hosts large groups of out-of-towners that descend upon the city for various events, most notably Speedweeks in early February, Bike Week in early March, Biketoberfest in October and Spring Break throughout March. Home to four colleges and universities, Daytona Beach boasts an excellent quality of life and is a city that thrives and celebrates the diversity of its community. Located less than an hour from Orlando and an hour and a half from Jacksonville, Daytona Beach residents have ample opportunity to experience both cities’ entertainment options, including Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, the Orlando Magic and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Daytona Beach continually exhibits its love for sports by hosting numerous local and national athletic events at the Ocean Center and Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

History

On Dec. 17, 1925, 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Embry-Riddle Company at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education. After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again in Miami, Fla., as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane maintenance. In the following decades, Embry-Riddle expanded its international outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight training, ground school and technical training programs into one location. With dollars and trucks borrowed from civic leaders, the move to Daytona Beach signaled the rebirth of Embry-Riddle as an accredited university and the start of its odyssey to worldclass status.

CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER respect • Responsibility • Integrity • Sportsmanship • servant Leadership The Champions of Character initiative was established by the NAIA to help promote the “right thing” by those affiliated with sports both inside and outside the sports setting. In so doing, the organization looks to develop exemplary character and sportsmanship in NAIA competition. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship. This program educates and create awareness of the positive character-building traits afforded by sports and returns integrity to competition at the collegiate and youth levels while impacting all of society. The Embry-Riddle Athletic Department has enthusiastically embraced the implementation of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative. For years the department has sought to instill in student-athletes the very values addressed by the movement. Additionally, the Student-Athlete Leadership Team assists in evaluation and feedback on the overall student-athlete experience. In 2012-13, Embry-Riddle student-athletes, coaches and staff contributed logged 1,953 hours in community service hours.

THE FLOCK

Eagle Athletics

The Flock is the student group that supports Embry-Riddle Athletics. We go to the games and get rowdy. We’re loud, we bang on pots and pans, we create cheer sheets, we mock the opposing team, we dress up according to the theme nights, and   we lose our voices (but usually find them at the next game). We’re massive. Over 500 strong. We bring our teams to victory, so far we’re at a 96% success rate. Occasionally we grow mustaches and hold cut outs of Mr. T’s face. A lot of us can fly airplanes.

Now in its 12th year and over 30 members strong, the Pep Band has played a tremendous role in creating and maintaining a home-court advantage for Eagles basketball and volleyball at the ICI Center. Founded in 1998-99, the Pep Band continues to make every Eagle contest a complete collegiate basketball experience. A huge fan favorite among Eagle faithful, the Pep Band has formed the tradition of performing the national anthem before Eagle basketball and volleyball games, as well as making the ICI Center a difficult place to play leading many fan cheers aside from their musical talents. The Pep Band put itself on the map during the 1999-2000 season. The group traveled by bus all the way to Branson, Mo., to support the basketball team at the national tournament. The Embry-Riddle Pep Band worked in harmony with the Bobcat Band from the College of the Ozarks to create an unbelievable atmosphere during the national championship game, which was won by the Eagles 75-63.
