Working towards M. Arch I is like making wine. When I first started at SCI-Arc, I was a farm with great potential that was chosen to become a vineyard. I had the right soil, the right weather, and the best intentions, but it was just the beginning. The real hard work began with planting the grapes. There were many grapes to learn about and to experiment with. While Cabernet Sauvignon might be the most popular red wine that many people find it easy for their palates, like Corbusier, it did not work in my farm. My expert instructors inspired me through the history and analysis of grapes to help me find my path. I also picked up tools of the trade, from manual labor to the most sophisticated technology. In addition, to grow the best grapes for wine meant diligent work and much blood, sweat, and tears. Even then, there was no guarantee everything works as planned. A lot of trial-and-errors were involved in harvesting, crushing, pressing, and fermentation. There was the final file. Then the final, final file, and the final, print file. An idea might not withstand the test of self and professional critiques or simply failed in execution. Fortunately, I have had the support of my faculty and peers at SCI-Arc to help put my best foot forward. “Architect Vintage 2018” is almost ready. Until then, please enjoy the fruits of my wine-making, my becoming of a professional.

Architects use lines in specific ways in sketches and blueprints to depict objects, materials, views, spatial relations, and processes. FUSE defies the common practice and uses lines to represent architecture from a different visual perspective. A winery is a complex venue filled with lines, in construction and in processes such as the cultivation and fermentation of grapes. FUSE brings together the terrain, the vineyard, and the structures in a line representation that offers intriguing, fresh viewpoints. “Changing the face of the Earth, one line at a time.

Nestled in a valley at 1,550 feet, in the cool, southern hills of Napa Valley, the estate encompasses 3,800 acres- five times the size of New York’s Central Park. The challenging terrain provides an expansive palate of geologic variety that can be tapped to showcase the intensely vivid flavors of mountain grape-growing. Each block is planted to maximize the vine’s varietal characteristics with ideal soil and individual care. Clarity of the fruit expression is the result of the estate’s elevation, resultant cool climate, and extended growing season. Carrying the fruit for a few extra weeks allows the vines time to complete the complex process toward ideal maturity. Comprising 3,800 acres in the eastern mountains above Napa Valley, Kenzo Estate is a pristine natural preserve. Kenzo Estate is unusual in Napa Valley for the vast expanse of wilderness it encompasses and Kenzo Estate’s owner, Kenzo Tsujimoto, has a strong desire to share his love for this unique and extraordinary property with guests. Draped along the summit that defines the eastern boundary of Napa Valley, Kenzo Estate is the custodian of watersheds originating on the property and draining East, West and South. Protected within this preserve are rain and spring-fed reservoirs, vernal pools, streams, and diverse forests of conifer, oak and manzanita. Wild boar, coyotes, mountain lions, deer, turkeys and bobcats linger in the wilderness and are occasionally observed by guests and those tending to the estate. Here is the convergence of nature and great winegrowing.
