Fellow cattlemen, In this world, is it not amazing how things react up and down. Examples of this include the rain falling down and crops growing up. Hay gets knocked down but gets rolled up. Prices sky rocket, so it is to be expected that they too come down. So we thank all our past customers for putting their faith in our bulls to increase those pounds and help offset those lower prices. We still strive for a consistent group of bulls reared with similar animal husbandry practices from year to year. This lets the genetics show us what we can do better. Statement from “The Cattle Team” at Northwest Veterinary and Supply: On behalf of the Northwest Veterinary and Supply “Cattle Team” we want to welcome you to the 17th Annual Assmus Angus bull production sale. Last year’s sale was especially memorable for the Assmus Family because the sale was held inside their new barn and we saw Laura say “YES!” to Eric’s marriage proposal. We are very happy to once again be a part of the animal health preparation and proud to be associated with a progressive and passionate beef cattle program and family. All sale bulls offered have passed a thorough breeding soundness exam which included evaluation of semen motility and morphology, scrotal measurements, and visual examination of eyes and hoof and leg conformation. To reduce stress and times through the chute, yearling bulls were also carcass ultrasounded by CUP Lab certified tech and “Cattle Team” member Jeff Schoenfelder at the time of the breeding exam. The bulls have received a complete vaccination protocol from birth to sale day and have received their first pre-breeding vaccination as well as a footrot and anthrax vaccinations. The bulls have been poured for the control of internal and external parasites and blood tested negative for BVD. We will be available on sale day to answer any health questions and to provide health papers for bulls traveling out of state. In good practice, we do encourage a 3 week quarantine period before contact with your herd to allow them to get over the high risk time after the stress of transportation and to work with your local veterinarian to prepare your bull for breeding by repeating a fertility test prior to pasture turn out. —Erik Holum, DVM

Calvin Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
Birth Wei ht EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weanin Wei ht EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearlin Wei ht EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Cow Ener y Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. Carcass Wei ht EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marblin EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
