From our herd to yours, The times they are a changin’. It wasn’t that long ago cattle were chosen based strictly on eye appeal. Cattle were more or less equal to a work of art. Beauty was in the eye of the beholder. Enter portable digital scales. Real data recorded throughout a critter’s life. I mean it makes sense since most cattle are sold by the pound! Some breeders tried to push the breed to gain beyond an animal’s normal capabilities by forcing animals to consume unnatural feed rations. Those animals were not raised in the real world and sometimes forgot the structural soundness to get that gain. Well hold on, we are entering a new cycle. One that levels the playing field for all breeders large and small. Genomics paired with traditional AHIR reporting will revolutionize the cattle industry. EPD accuracies will be almost unquestionable. Here at Assmus Angus we are constantly working to improve our herd by the use of these technologies. Incorporation of genomics has been slowly adopted. We have tested a lot of our older cows. Those girls’ numbers hardly moved with genomics factored in. This gives a sense of pride with our honest AHIR reporting. For the fun of it, we sent off 4 bull samples. If available sale day, we will share that information. All new technology is like diving into a pool. If you hit a wall, at least in the shallow end you’re less likely to drown. The bulls were raised in the real world, with God, Eastern SD grass, and a structurally sound Angus cow doing most of the work. The calves received creep beginning in late June. We put up some earlage for the first time. Two random bunk sample collected by Curt Slykhuis proved the bulls were on a 43 Mcal ration from weaning in September to December. This new diet seemed to get the gains we desire as well as retain soundness for longevity. As always, we would like to take this moment and thank past, present, and future buyers for putting your trust in our cattle. It’s your support that keeps us working on improving a set of cows that helps you improve yours.
— EA, Assmus Angus “We have the bull for YOU!”

Statement from “The Cattle Team” at Northwest Veterinary and Supply: On behalf of the Northwest Veterinary and Supply “Cattle Team” we want to welcome you to the 18th Annual Assmus An us bull production sale. We are very happy to once a ain be a part of the animal health preparation and proud to be associated with a pro ressive and passionate beef cattle pro ram and family. All sale bulls offered have passed a thorou h breedin soundness exam which included evaluation of semen motility and morpholo y, scrotal measurements, and visual examination of eyes, hoof and le conformation. To reduce stress and times throu h the chute, yearlin bulls were also carcass ultrasounded by CUP Lab certified tech and “Cattle Team” member Jeff Schoenfelder at the time of the breedin exam. The bulls have received a complete vaccination protocol from birth to sale day and have received their first pre-breedin vaccination as well as a footrot and anthrax vaccinations. The bulls have been poured for the control of internal and external parasites and blood tested ne ative for BVD. We will be available on sale day to answer any health questions and to provide health papers for bulls travelin out of state. In ood practice, we do encoura e a 3 week quarantine period before contact with your herd to allow them to et over the hi h risk time after the stress of transportation and to work with your local veterinarian to prepare your bull for breedin by repeatin a fertility test prior to pasture turn out. — Erik Holum, DVM

Calvin Ease Direct CED , is e pressed as a di erence in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in rst-calf heifers. It predicts the average di erence in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to rst-calf heifers.
Birth Wei ht EPD BW , e pressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weanin Wei ht EPD WW , e pressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearlin Wei ht EPD YW , e pressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD Milk , is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as e pressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Cow Ener y Value $EN , e pressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses di erences in cow energy requirements as an e pected dollar savings di erence in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy e penses). Components for computing the cow $E savings di erence include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with di erences in mature cow size. Carcass Wei ht EPD CW , e pressed in pounds is a predictor of the di erences in hot carcass weight of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD RE , e pressed in square inches, is a predictor of the di erence in ribeye area of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marblin EPD Marb , e pressed as a fraction of the di erence in USDA marbling score of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Weaned Calf Value $W , an inde value e pressed in dollars per head, is the e pected average di erence in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $ includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with di erences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. Beef Value $B , an inde value e pressed in dollars per head, is the e pected average di erence in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD SC , e pressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the di erence in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
