PORTFOLIO

Eric Han About me

Once, my dad told me: “Live your life to the fullest, but do not be full of yourself”. My name is Eric Han Schneider, or “Monk” if you ask the right friend. I am also a Design student, an illustration lover and music enthusiast. I enjoy smiling without a reason and seeing the fresh side of life. I am a Graphic Design student at Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), and participated activally at the Academic Student Directory of Design of UFPR at 2011 (as a Collaborator) and in 2012 (as President). I were a member of the National Student Encounter Organization (CONDE) and of the Regional Student Encounter Organization (CORDe).

This Portifolio And the selection of works I tried, though this selection, to find the projects i had most fun doing. That being said, these are not always the pieces my friends tell me: “Man, this is your best work, but they are, for me, a special work and experience. All of these represent a good learning exercise. Sometimes the project was intended to someone, sometimes it was just for the joy of the process. Then, lets get started! :)

Mantra D’alma The transformation of one soul Mantra D’alma changed my conception and ideas about a Design project. It is an autoral folder about my life, my beliefs and my thoughts about family, truth and virtues. Everything in it is connected to the concept of “family root” and “self improvement”. The name itself is the junction of the words: Mantra, a indian prayer, based in the repetition of words to create the power of transformation, and D’alma, which basically means “of soul”. What is life after all if not the transformation of one soul?

The cover is a handmade lettering, drawn with a Indian Ink pen 0.05. The color was applied by the overlay of two fabrics, one traditionally Korean and another old German style (representing my two family root).

You actually read the project by turning the pages down. This creates an immersion feel in the project, as it helps the reading order, and reflects the concepts of “origin” or “root”

The concept of “right” and “ left” represents the union of my two families, my mother’s Korean right side and my father’s German/french left side

Near the end of the Project, i talk about beliefs and virtues i earned from my families. The one i cheer the most is the concept of courage. A Courageous one is not a dumb person, who makes decisions recklessly at the heat of the moment. The truly courageous one is the one who makes decisions based on its beliefs, and pays the consequences for it, without regrets.

The feather was drawn with a Indian Ink pen 0.05

The Phoenix Life, and its cicles This project is a Mantra’s offspring, because the illustration started to be part of one of the pages. It is based on my Mother. More precisely on my Mother’s life. Once, she told me she sees herself as a Phoenix, because you can divide her life in periods of great wealth, and big troubles, just like the Phoenix lives on sacred fire to find herself burnt out, and then live again.

The Illustration was build in a way it can be used as a pattern. Repeating the feather and creating a bigger image reflects the concept of Life, its ups and downs in a constant revival.

The feather pattern, applied in one of the Mantra’s Pages.

The intersection of the circles symbolizes the co-working of the two artists.

The Elementares Folder and poster, merged This project advertised the awesome exposition “Elementares”, by the equally awesome artists Andre Mendes and Fernando Franciosi. The expo took place at the Museum of Contemporary Arts, in Paraná (Brazil). The idea of merging the folder with the poster created a versatile material, capable of working inside different ambient benefiting the advertisement. This idea reduced in half the project’s required budget, and actually came from a discussion with the artists, which was a great experience for both parts.

The folder becomes a poster. It has been used as both by the artist.

These are the Artists, they are really good and gentle men, whom i really hope to work with again in the future.

The expo took place in Curitiba, from 16/08 to 04/11 in 2012, at the Museum of Contemporary Arts.

Vá Project A exercise of letting it go The Vá Project (or “Go Project”) is a personal illustration project of handmade bookmarks. The illustration of bookmarks consists in a exercise of letting go the drawing. Each drawing is unique, but every artist needs to learn how to let them go and start a new one. How to never stop drawing, and how to finish your works. Every finished bookmark become a present for a friend of mine. You can chose any of them for yourself, if its not taken already!

This are the newest Bookmarks, that i made this very week

These is a collection of Vå’s, that have been already send to one of my friends

Some frieds with their Va’s in hand :) Thanks for the photos, guys!

Orchestra’s

Instruments Instructing music though Design

One of the most pleasant projects i was able to participate. The project’s objective is to instruct children about the instruments of the orchestra and the position of the musicians. It also explains the different types of instruments and the role of the Maestro. This folder is distributed at the beginning of plays dedicated for children. The plays are held in Teatro Guaíra (Paraná, Brazil)

The position and number of instruments displayed in the folder is exactly as the child watch them in theatre

Every kind of instrument was drawn separately in a vector based simple form. Each type of instrument has a different color scheme, in order to facilitate the spectator’s comprehension.

Real Happiness Sharing Happiness Alexander Supertramp was a American wanderer, who travelled in order to find and became one with nature. His life and beliefs became more famous though a book and movie called “Into the Wild”. One of the most inspired passages of the story is one sentence he wrote before dying in Alaska, a sentence that put together all that he discovered in the wild: “Happiness is only real when shared” Based on this sentence and story, i made a poster to my girlfriend. It was drawn on the back of a old Display, revitalizing the material.

The drawing was made with a Posca White Pen, on a black plastic Display.

R360 Posters An introduction to cyberculture These are the posters i made to an event that took place on Curitiba, Paraná, in 2012, the South Regional Student Encounter. The whole idea was to immerse the watcher in the theme of “Cyberculture”, “Lucid Mind” and “Multiple Angles”. The low contrast of letters and the image was done to complete the feel of “light” or “enlightened”. I represented these concepts on the details of the poster, that i’ll explain just ahead.

This poster is about the expansion of your own vision. It shows multiples sides of yourself as multiple angles expands from your “ head”, or “mind”. This is the key idea behind the “360 view” concept.

DESIGN CURITIBA

2012

In the Banner, the same concept was applied, with the difference of sharing your views and angles with orhers. After all, the event is an encounter.

The Batman, Pikachu, a Rhino, Harry Potter, Charlie Sheen, Mojo Jojo and Elvis. Who would you like to be?

VocĂŞ

Seja quem ê quer ser Who do you want to be?

This poster had the intent of sharing the idea of idols and aspirations everyone have. It was produced to advertise a party that goes by the name of “Be who you want to be”. The idea is for you to dress up like someone you admire or aspire to be. The illustration represents a person becoming many others, transforming herself into someone she admires. It was based on idols of different origins.

The drawing was made with a 0.05 Indian Ink pen, and colored digitally on photoshop.

City of Music The city is gonna change This is one work me and some friends made to a contest of the Lollapalooza’s Poster. In the end we were not chosen, in my opinion our poster resemble more a jazz concert than a rock one, so i understand not becoming the oficial poster :) Making this was a huge pleasure, in which everyone co worked into the same goal, and had the same amount of work. Thank you very much, Lucas, Luis and Kaio :)

The theme was “Take over São Paulo with music.” To actually take over something, you must transform it. Based on this idea we transformed the city in music.

My main responsabilities were to made the Lettering of the poster and the first sketches. I also worked with a friend on the vectors of buildings and instruments, but that was more of his doing.

Big do bearded love to They have a big heart, and a big beard This in one of the projects i did for the joy of it. In a talk with a friend, we discovered that generally the big bearded character, who is also big or respectable, has the biggest heart of the series. Generally, that character is our favorite, too. So this posters are used as a manifest, to all of those who judge based on appearance, this great big guys have a heart, too!

My interpretantion of Jean Valjean, from the novel “Les Miserables

Hagrid, from Harry Potter

The most controversial character of the 3, Walter White from the Breaking Bad series. He isnt kind all the time, but he does love too.

Thank you i hope you had a good time :) All of these share a piece of my heart, and in all of them i learned something. I’ll never stop thinking that money should not be the objective. The objective should always be a good work, and sometimes, money is the consequence :) I love working with kind people, and in something i really believe in. If you wanna chat about anything, you can find me in erichan7@gmail.com Thank you for reading the stories of my objectives, and until some other time!
