What is NC Youth Soccer? The North Carolina Youth Soccer Association, Inc. was founded in 1976, receiving our 501 (c)(3) in 1984 and as a Corporation in the State of North Carolina. We are the governing body of youth soccer for US Youth Soccer.We offer play for every level of play: Recreation, Challenge, Classic, NC Youth Academy, Olympic Development, National League Piedmont Division. There are more than 65,000 children playing with NC Youth Soccer and thousands of other coaches, administrators and volunteers!

In-Season Educational Opportunities Parents, Players, & Coaches of CVYSA

On September 27 - 28, 2019 (Hickory, NC) Catawba Valley Youth Soccer Association (CVYSA) hosted Mark Pulisic for a two day event during the week to support their parents, players, & coaches. Restructuring their programming to support an educational opportunity is normally saved for the pre-season, or the off-season. The model of inseason/local educational opportunities for associations places development at the forefront of operational practices. Sacrificing training for learning was one objective behind hosting soccer influencer - Mark Pulisic.
NCYSA was fortunate enough to be invited to experience this soccer learning opportunity alongside the Staff of CVYSA. Following the event, Director of Coaching (DOC), Jeff Schellenberger was interviewed to provide some context regarding the development and implementation of this educational opportunity.

What motivated you to hold an in-season player, parent, & coach educational opportunity? Why not do this in the offseason? Anytime you can complete coaching education is a good time. Our staff is all part time so their OFF time is important to them. Mark’s availability was a big factor in when we could hold the event. Having the training during the season meant it would be fresh & they could take the ideas to training the next night or their next session. We were able to adjust practice times for most of our teams so they could train on a separate night that week or train earlier prior to Mark’s sessions.
How did the parents receive the information shared by Mark during the 2-night event? I think the folks who attended his discussion on ‘parenting’ got some relevant info about what not to say or do to your child before or after a game. The folks who attended all seemed to like the info he shared and appreciated his insight. An extremely small percentage of players / people make it to the big stage.
Enjoy your time with your children as they grow up. IF the child has the passion to succeed & the tools to do so, it just might happen. Mark started off his presentation with telling us that the #1 question he gets from parents is:
"What is the secret formula for Soccer Success?’"
Mark explained there is no formula. The just that parents need to be supportive, allow their child to be a kid and be involved in other activities. Christian trained twice a week with his Hershey club team.
..........Christian Pulisic Christian Pulisic became a member of the Chelsea squad for the start of the 2019/20 season with an agreement first reached in January 2019 for his permanent transfer from Borussia Dortmund.
He spent the remainder of that season on loan at the German club.He joined Chelsea on a five-and-a-half year contract and became the third American player in our history after his international team-mate, Born in Hershey, Pennsylvania, he is the son of two former footballers, and spent time in England as a child, Pulisic signed for Dortmund as a 16-year-old in early 2015, quickly rising through the academy ranks to make his senior debut a year later. Pulisic was voted his country’s Player of the Year in 2017, and was their star player in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the summer of 2019 shortly before he joined up with the Chelsea squad. Pulisic was named the Young Player of the Tournament.
How did the coaches receive the information shared by Mark during the 2-night event? Our coaching staff enjoyed the event. Mark’s discussion to the parents is very relevant. The staff understands that for a child to fully develop as a player, parents should be there as a support person, but allow the coach to coach and the player to play. Any time there is a parent / adult (other than the coach) talking to a player during training or a game equals a distraction and can lead to confusion for the player.

The Field Session was very relevant as well. Simple passing patterns to a possession game to an activity to goal. Each activity building to the next. The importance of good execution in the passing activity is reflected in the possession game & then games to goal. If a player can’t be sharp with their passing & their movement off the ball then success will be limited during a game. The activities he shared with us were used by Dortmund’s U10 Boys. Each could be used with any age group within our club or almost any club.
Mark Pulisic
Keep up with Mark Mark Pulisic was introduced to the beautiful game by his Croatian father while growing up on Long Island, NY. He went on to play four years of college soccer at George Mason University, followed by eight years of professional indoor soccer for the Harrisburg Heat. Since retiring from playing, Mark has coached at every level of the game—notably: head coach of the men and women at Lebanon Valley College, head coach of the Detroit Ignition (Major Indoor Soccer League), youth coach at PA Classics and Borussia Dortmund, and assistant coach of three lower league professional teams (Harrisburg City Islanders, Rochester Rhinos and Pittsburgh Riverhounds). In 2015, Mark moved to Germany when his son Christian was signed by Borussia Dortmund. Christian debuted for both Dortmund and the US Men’s National Team as a 17 year-old in 2016. While in Germany, Mark gained invaluable insight into youth development overseas. He holds his USSF ‘A’ and UEFA ‘A’ coaching licenses.
