“Bloom where you are planted.”

That’s a sign Judy and I gave to each of our two sons many years ago as they approached adulthood. We wanted it to be a reminder of a few things we have always believed.

First, is that you find good people wherever you go. So don’t be afraid of career or geographic changes. Find and enjoy the good people wherever you go.

Second, is that you have a responsibility to give back to the place that allows you to earn a living. So, be as generous as possible with your investment of time, talent and treasure in the place you are planted.

Erie has certainly been blessed with families who have been successful in their business enterprises, and who have then given back in many different ways to many different worthwhile organizations and endeavors.

Three of those families are featured in this edition of your ERIE Magazine.

The successful multi-generational entrepreneurial spirit of the Schaaf, Hilbert and McBrier families continues to provide the Erie region with economic and philanthropic success stories.

Before retiring from the newspaper business at the end of 2007, my entire career was spent working with three different family-owned newspaper companies. Without exception, those families understood their responsibility to give back to their communities. But more often than not their contributions of time, talent and treasure were deliberately done under the radar. They never sought recognition for what they did, and reacted with genuine humility when it came.

The same is true for the families you will read about in these pages. Each of the families has developed multiple business lines and market niches. What resonated for me in reading their stories is that they all work equally hard on three things: the family, the businesses and the community.

“Mixing business and family presents challenges, it’s true,” said Debbie (Schaaf) Hodinko, who’s involved in all three Schaaf family businesses. “But because we all share the

same drive and pride in how our companies are represented in our community, our determination outweighs our differences.”

John Hilbert, now serves as President of PHB Inc., as a second generation Hilbert family leader. How does he explain their success? “Our success is due to unconditional trust and maintaining the highest levels of professional integrity. Our parents taught us that family is everything, and you always have each other’s back,” he said.

The McBrier family traces its economic roots to a greatgrandfather founding the Erie Steam Shovel Company, which manufactured the shovels that built the Panama Canal.

And the family’s spirit of giving back traces its roots through five generations. “Ever since Erie Steam Shovel Company was founded,” said David McBrier, “it’s always been a priority for us to give back. It’s important for us to do this, because we have such a strong connection to the region.”

The Schaaf, Hilbert and McBrier families have very different businesses, but very similar philosophies. Their entrepreneurial spirit has led them to establish multiple business lines. Their family spirit has led them to face challenges and opportunities alike with a united front.

And their community spirit has led them to be philanthropic leaders in our region. They have each proven they have a strong passion for place as well as profit.

We all know you have to do well to be able to do good.

We feature these three families, but we know there are many like them in the Erie region. We should all be grateful for that. And we can be confident in the region’s future with such determined and dedicated families leading the way.

A Day’s Work is All in the Family For the Schaafs, business is always a group effort.

Though the motto for Building Systems, Inc., a full-service general contractor for commercial and industrial projects, is “we build our reputation from the ground up,” a motto about family serving as the foundation for the 26-year-old business’ success could be just as apt.

Building Systems, Inc.’s story starts back in 1984 when Jim Schaaf, now deceased, founded the company along with his son, Tim. It grew steadily over the years, with business spilling over into Ohio and New York and down toward southwest Pennsylvania. To help maintain this level of growth, Jim’s son, Dan, came on board. Within the past ten years, seven Schaaf grandchildren reinvigorated the company with their youthful energy.

With what Dan Schaaf, now Building Systems, Inc.’s Vice President, calls a “passion and dedication to perfection,” the company works with clients from the planning to the engineering to the construction of a project. What’s more, they stay in contact with clients well after a project is completed to help them deal with any warranty issues that may arise.

This dedication to quality has won Building Systems, Inc. a loyal and oftentimes repeat customer base.

There are dozens of examples of the company’s work around the region: Gannon University’s Waldron Center, the Boston Store’s renovation, the ERIE Community Credit Union, Mercyhurst College’s Hirt Building and Hamot’s new Bayview Centre.

This love and talent for building has come in handy for other Schaaf family members’ businesses. Take the example of Prints & More by Holly, a blueprint shop founded in 1993 by sisters Debbie (Schaaf) Hodinko, Holly Schaaf, Karen (Schaaf) Fields and Nanette (Schaaf) Spaeder. The shop provides copy, scanning, image storage and image transfer services and employs two nephews from the next generation full-time and five others part-time. The shop has been housed in a remodeled building at Peach and Metz Streets since 2006.

Finding just the right people to redo the space was a no-brainer for the four sisters, who had Building Systems, Inc. put an attractive and streamlined spin on the store.

Perhaps the best example of how the Schaaf family helps out with each other’s businesses is the newly reopened Fuhrman’s Cider Mill. When the popular mill that had been a staple in Belle Valley since 1896 tragically burned down three years ago, the owners hired Building Systems, Inc. to reconstruct the facility. The many roadblocks on the path to rebuilding, however, shelved the project.

The Schaafs couldn’t let the beloved mill disappear, so, after approaching a baker who was a friend of the family, they formed a partnership to resurrect Fuhrman’s Cider Mill. The task wasn’t an easy one—for the first eight months of 2010, members of the partnership worked nights and weekends to transform the Perry Highway Hose Company into a mill. Making the process easier and more enjoyable was the fact that the Schaaf family—in this instance, 25 family members and many family friends—tackled the work together.

Now, the new Fuhrman’s Cider Mill & Bakery, which reopened to great fanfare on Friday, Sept. 10, is a veritable showcase for the Schaaf family’s specialties.

Not only was the building renovated by Building Systems, Inc., but its store displays and signs came from Prints & More by Holly’s new custom vinyl line.

Karen (Schaaf) Fields has worked at Building Systems, Inc. for 25 years and at Prints & More by Holly since its inception. With the cider mill project, she says that working with family is a positive and beneficial experience. “We all know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” she says. “We are able to build on them, almost silently, and to make each of the ventures well-rounded, smooth flowing businesses.”

Debbie (Schaaf) Hodinko, also involved in all three family businesses, says working as a unit is the only way they know how to work. “Coming from a family of ten, we grew up relying on each other for support in everything we did,” she says. “We were a team all by ourselves! So it was only natural for us to want to bring whatever talents we could offer to Building Systems, Inc. for 26 years now. We’re a close-knit family, so working together every day seems normal to us.”

Still, she admits there can be challenges to running a family business. “Mixing business and family presents challenges, it’s true,” she says. “But because we

all share the same drive and pride in how our companies are represented in our community, our determination outweighs our differences.”

Just as strong as the Schaaf’s desire to help out each other is their desire to help out the Erie community. The family has been benefactors of the Erie Zoo and local colleges and universities for many years. Prints & More by Holly supports many local youth sports teams and participates in community fundraising sponsorships. The business also donated all of the reproduction services for the Extreme Makeover Home Edition episode that took place in Erie. Over at Fuhrman’s, the family culled the wares for sale at the mill’s newly expanded general store from a variety of local vendors. “We want to support the community as much as possible,” says Debbie (Schaaf) Hodinko.

Though the Schaafs primarily rely on each other, they say they are grateful for the assistance the Erie Regional Chamber

and Growth Partnership has offered through the years. “Joining the Chamber has been beneficial to Prints & More by helping us get our name out to the Erie region,” says Karen (Schaaf) Fields. “Their membership base is so diversified, and many people that never heard of us are now learning about our business.”

Building Systems, Inc. is a Silver level Investor with the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership.

The family also mentions that they are grateful for the Chamber’s assistance with the new Fuhrman’s Cider Mill’s ribbon cutting ceremony.

If the past serves as any indicator, there will certainly be successors to the trio of Schaaf family businesses now in operation. “We all raise our children with the same sense of family commitment,” says Debbie (Schaaf) Hodinko. “And we’re proud to see many of them choosing to join the ‘team’ as they grow up.”

A Family Effort That Fuels Success

Ask members of the Hilbert family what goes into creating a successful business, and they’ll talk about things like commitment to a vision, teamwork, a willingness to change with the times, integrity and trust in each other’s decisions.

The second generation of Hilberts are continuing this nose-to-thegrindstone entrepreneurial spirit that first manifested itself nearly 50 years ago when Bill Hilbert, Sr., a Gannon University student, jumped at the opportunity to apprentice at Kerner Tool & Die, thus beginning the legacy of entrepreneurship currently entering its fifth decade. The first opportunity to become an owner was in 1971 with the purchase of Rite Precision Co. A partnership was formed with other local entrepreneurs, and that began a steady pursuit of acquiring several local manufacturing firms now known as PHB Inc. Today, the Fairview-based corporation, whose roots in die casting go all the way back to 1906, is a fully integrated supplier of products and services to a wide range of industries.

They are an employer of more than 500 highly skilled professionals and an enterprise that generates more than $100 million in annual sales.

Hilbert’s sons now carry on this legacy of entrepreneurship while Bill Sr. currently serves as the Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of the PHB Corporation and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Reddog Industries.

John Hilbert now serves as President of PHB Inc. John began his career with Reddog Industries in 1986 following graduation from Alliance College. All through high school and during his college studies, John worked in plant maintenance, served his apprenticeship and following graduation from Alliance, worked in Engineering, Sales, Purchasing and ultimately as President for several years before making the move to PHB Inc. in 2006.

As President of PHB Inc., John oversees the operations of all divisions including die casting, CNC machining, tool and die, injection molding, assembly and contract manufacturing. When pressed to explain his success John is quick to credit his family. “Our success is due to unconditional trust and maintaining the highest levels of professional integrity. Our parents taught us that family is everything, and you always have each other’s back,” he says.

Over on the east side of Erie, Bill Hilbert, Jr. currently serves as President of Reddog Industries, Inc., a global supplier of tooling and specialized machining.

Bill Jr., who began his career with the company in 1981 following graduation from the University of Dayton, states that there may be no harder job on earth than working for your father. “The success we encountered going forward was a true team effort,” he says. “My brothers and I led by the example my parents set, and rarely ever disagreed about decisions regarding the business.

We shared a unique ability to trust each other’s decisions and give one another room to grow and be successful in our own way.” Collectively, PHB Inc. and Reddog Industries are invested in the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership at the Silver level.

Joseph Hilbert currently owns and operates Pulakos Chocolates, also an Investor with the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership and a company separate from the Hilbert family businesses. Joe served a key role during his tenure at Reddog Industries.

He states that the confidence he gained from implementing an ambitious expansion and renovation plan, upgrading systems, and instituting a new contract buying program during his 17-year tenure as the Reddog Industries Vice President of Purchasing gave him ample training to tackle this new venture. Though he admits it’s not always easy to walk the fine line between crafting traditional candies and embracing new technology, he says that “the things I learned while at Reddog cannot be taught in a classroom. Handson experience and my family’s support of

every critical decision allowed me to enjoy considerable success.”

Several other family members played key roles in helping the businesses succeed. Kathie Hilbert Hickey currently lives in Cincinnati, Ohio with her husband, Brian, and children, Garrett and Erin. Following graduation from the University of Dayton, Kathie worked in several administrative capacities before moving to Ohio. The Hickeys remain an integral part of the PHB sales team, with Brian servicing all PHB Inc. customers in the Ohio, Indiana and Michigan regions.

Bill Hilbert, Sr. also adds that his wife, Martha, was an especially positive influence on her children. “The boys did not learn all of this from me,” he says. “Their mother played a far more important role than I did in encouraging the importance of cooperation and trust in one another.”

Besides strong family ties, the Hilberts say that other factors fueling their companies’ success over the decades include being flexible and willing to reinvent themselves and their company based on current economic conditions, implementing capital improvements and innovative manufacturing techniques, adopting the lean principles of manufacturing, understanding that today’s manufacturing market is global, differentiating yourself from competitors and aggressively investing in the company and its employees.

Just as strong as the commitment they have to their respective enterprises is the Hilbert family’s commitment to supporting the Erie community. “We all have a sincere desire to give back,” says Bill Hilbert, Jr. “As a family, we continue to support many local organizations with both our time and through philanthropic efforts.”

Bill Hilbert, Sr. proudly discusses the diverse accomplishments of his family and their steadfast dedication to the business he began more than 50 years ago. “The rewards of success are many, but the most important accomplishment for which I am most proud is the success of the family and our ability to work together for nearly 30 years.” When asked about the next generation of Hilberts, he answers that “there is plenty of opportunity; we just hope that each of them makes the right decision for themselves, and we hope that that decision brings them all back to Erie.”

One Family, Many Enterprises Evidence of the McBrier family’s enterprises are all over Erie, whether in the form of real estate holdings like Village West, West Ridge Commons or the Pittsburgh Avenue retail spaces, all managed by the McBrier Properties Group; Little Caesars restaurants, all under management of the McBriers’ Lyndal Enterprises; or products found in hundreds of commercial, institutional and public buildings and residential homes supplied by Builders’ Hardware and Specialty Company, another McBrier-owned company. But, the family’s business ties in Erie go much deeper than these present-day enterprises.

“My great-grandfather founded the Erie Steam Shovel Company, which manufactured the shovels that built the Panama Canal,” says Dale McBrier, co-owner of Lyndal Enterprises. Our great-grandfather James McBrier established lumber, commodities and shipping businesses throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth

Today, the McBriers continue this legacy of trying their hand at new ventures by working in a whole new trio of business sectors: real estate, franchising and architectural distribution. This latest iteration of their business history started back in 1970, when James P. McBrier returned from New York City to work at the Erie Paint Company. He then migrated to McBrier Properties Group, a commercial and residential real estate company he ran with younger brother, Dale. Like Jim, Dale spent time outside of Erie, in this case living in Denver. With Jim working commercial and Dale working residential, the two brothers ran the company for six years. Jim went on to acquire Builders’ Hardware and Specialty Company, a regional door and hardware wholesale manufacturer and installation company with operations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and West Virginia. Jim now runs that company with his son, David, who previously worked for IBM Microelectronics in Burlington, Vermont and IBM Global Services in Chicago.

“I asked my dad if there was an opportunity to come back to Erie,” says David. Now overseeing business development and strategic marketing, he mentions that he landed his position the old-fashioned way, saying, “I had to go through an interview process, just like anyone else.”

When asked about what it’s like working with his father, David reports that the day-to-day experience is both enjoyable and educational. “From a mentor standpoint, I am learning about so many different facets of the business—its rules, how things get done, when it’s okay to break the mold,” he says. “You need access to expertise and people who have history, and I rely on him for that.”

McBrier, inherited his father’s entrepreneurial spirit, operating Trask’s Department Store on State Street and quickly expanding it into a four-store chain; after 24 years in the business, he sold his stores to Carlisle’s.

They’ve been running Lyndal Enterprises, an operator of 15 Little Caesars restaurants in Pennsylvania and Ohio, since 2003. Dale oversees construction projects while Lynn, a former lawyer, handles the legal, financial, marketing and

he says. “It’s important for us to do this, because we have such a strong connection to the region.”

Dale concurs, saying, “Growing up, we were just expected to help. That ethic of giving back to one’s community continually inspires me and my family.”

operational aspects of the business. She is also responsible for employee training and mentoring, something she loves to do. “For many of our employees, this is their first job, so working at Little Caesars teaches them to develop a good work ethic,” she says. “Plus, many of them are students who return during the summers and the holidays, and it’s always fun to see them.”

Another commonality between both McBrier businesses is their strong commitment to giving back to Erie. For Dale and Lynn, their business offers an easy way to support a wide variety of organizations. “The Erie community has been good to us,” says Lynn. “We are fortunate to be able to give back with a delicious and fun product. Everyone loves pizza, so we make lots of in-kind donations.”

Pizzas, though, are just the start of it. Both Dale and Lynn, a native of Long Island, New York, support and sit on the boards of a long and varied list of organizations including the Neighborhood Art House, Earth Action, SafeNet, The Ophelia Project, Athena PowerLink®, the Erie Art Museum, The Erie Community Foundation, Erie Women’s Fund and the Northwest Pennsylvania Workforce

The McBrier businesses are Silver and Investor level members of the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership. They say that they appreciate the efforts of the organization to develop the local business community. “It’s important for them to keep weighing in on critical issues, to make sure we are on the right path and to make sure that the business community works together,” says David.

Right now, it’s too soon to tell what path the next generations of McBriers will take—David and his wife Heather’s children are still young, while Dale and Lynn’s children are all in high school or recent colleges graduates. Dale says his three children display entrepreneurial traits. “I don’t know what drives that,” he says, “but it’s in my kids as much as it is in me.” He adds that he hopes his children, just as he, his brother and his forebears, return to Erie to honor those impulses. Of course, it’s anyone’s guess as to where a family that has already successfully ventured into the shipping, manufacturing, retail, real estate, wholesale and franchising sectors will go next. “It’s good to have the courage to try new things,” Lynn says.

Jim and David are just as heavily invested in Erie, lending their support to over a dozen social service, capital campaign, health, arts and educational organizations. Not that this spirit of giving is anything new; as David explains, it stretches back five generations.

On April 6, 1961, 22 members of the Erie Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women launched “Stairways” – named for the staircase clients walked up to arrive at the social rehabilitation center and toward a new life.

Today, Stairways Behavioral Health is the most progressive mental health care provider in Erie and Crawford counties, serving more than 8,000 people annually and employing more than 450 full and part-time mental health professionals.

The conviction of the founders remains at the core of Stairways’ mission 50 years later, helping individuals and families to recognize and care for mental illness, making recovery a reality for everyone.
